President's Message
W
elcome back to school! As you probably know, the membership year is now in full swing. That means it’s time to start recruiting new members to your chapters! Here are a few tips you might find useful:
• • • • • •
Host a booth at your school’s club fair—this is a great way to gain some publicity for your chapter. Set up a booth in your school’s business building—students can come visit in-between classes. Hang flyers about PBL on bulletin boards around campus. Create a social media page for your local chapter (if you haven’t already done so). Invite your friends to join PBL. Last, but not least, host an opening social—have a BBQ, go bowling, do something fun to help potential members feel welcome.
I want to put an emphasis on open communication this year. I encourage you to reach out to me so we can continue to grow FBLA-PBL. My personal cell phone is always available: 401.524.9871. Please let me know if I can do anything to assist you!

PBL Officers Visit Capitol Hill
The PBL national officer team collaborated with Maryland and Virginia state officers to promote Perkins Funding and Phi Beta Lambda during visits with federal legislators on Capitol Hill in July. Officers left a media kit after each visit containing PBL brochures, fact sheets, Perkins Funding, and membership videos so that congressmen, congresswomen, congressional aids, and senators could review what was discussed during the visits.
These national and state officers had more than 22 visits with legislators, including a visit with the Department of Education Assistant Secretary.
ABOVE: PBL officers meet with Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges Mark Mitsui, Branch Chief for the College and Career Transitions branch Robin Utz, National FFA Advisor Steve Brown, Education Program Specialist Albert Palacios, and McKenzie Baecker LEFT: Kentucky Senator Rand Paul greets PBL National Treasurer Karthik Krishnan at the Russell Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.

From The Pros
Stress for Success By Kelci Lynn Lucier
Y
ou're in college now. You're free! But wait—juggling classes, feeding yourself, living on a budget, and fulfilling your PBL obligations isn't as easy as you thought. PBL Business Leader asked education expert Kelci Lynn Lucier to share some tips on managing your college-sized stressors. WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE COLLEGE STRESSORS? I think the top stressors vary for each student, but the most common ones tend to be time management, academics, and finances. I believe the most sacred resource a college student has is not necessarily money, but time—there are so many things to do and manage and balance. On top of that are difficult academic requirements and a tight budget, plus a social life and co-curricular involvement—it’s no wonder students feel so stressed! Though students are often hard on themselves for experiencing stress, they shouldn’t be. Stress is a sign you’re invested in your time in college and want to do well.
13 PBL Business LEADER
IS THERE A POSITIVE SIDE TO STRESS? One of the points I make in my book College Stress Solutions is there is a distinct difference between having stress in your college life and being stressed out. Stress doesn’t always have to be negative; it can be a great way to sort out your priorities. The key difference between negative and positive stress is how you handle it. An upcoming and stressful exam, for example, can cause you to really stress out, or it can help motivate you to study and prepare well in advance. HOW CAN HANDLING COLLEGE STRESS PREPARE YOU FOR PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS? It always bothers me when people claim college students aren’t in the “real world.” What? Students deal with real-life issues every day. Consequently, learning how to handle stress in some of the areas I talk about in the book (e.g. academic stress, financial stress, personal stress, social stress) help you develop and learn skills that prepare you as a professional, as well.
TIPS FOR HANDLING STRESS

Ask for help! It’s unrealistic to think you can go through college without any help at all. Take care of yourself. You can’t do well in your classes if you’re otherwise a mess. Relax. You can face your challenges. You can succeed in college. Sometimes, though, you just need to take a leap of faith and believe in yourself.
Kelci Lynn Lucier is the College Life Expert on About.com and is launching The College Parent Handbook, a website for parents of college students. Her first book, College Stress Solutions, was released in April 2014. She also previously wrote “The College Experience” blog for US News & World Report. Did you like this article? Social Media Do's and Don'ts
Officer Notes
by PBL Western Region Vice President Ashley Amundsen acebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, LinkedIn, the list could go on and on. With so many sites that allow us to socialize and post updates about ourselves, it’s not a surprise that social networking has become a significant part of our everyday lives. It can be accessed from virtually anywhere in the world; on smartphones, tablets, and laptops. It can be used to connect with family and friends, to post photos of travels and pets, and to share whatever else pleases one’s desire. With social networking rapidly becoming the norm for millions of people, it is important to note the top ten do’s and don’ts of social media use. After all, not only do your friends view everything you post, your potential employers could too.
F
The Do's: Do be selective: You don’t have to accept every friend request you receive, especially if you are not familiar with the person. It’s ok to only be friends with the people who you actually know. Do model good behavior: Think about what you post before you post it. Post things that will help your online image and presence, not harm it. Do promote your work: Did you just create a new business? Don’t be afraid to share it with your friends on your social media accounts! Even consider creating a new page or account to share your portfolio and promote your business. Do practice positivity: Don’t be that friend who is always posting negative statuses. Share something good that happened to you today! If you like an encouraging post or a funny video, don’t be afraid to share that too! Your friends will thank you!
14 PBL Business LEADER
Do move toward face-to-face interaction: It can be so easy to get wrapped up with our social media lives, that we forget what really matters: talking face-to-face. Use social networking to schedule meetings or events, but if you sincerely want to talk to a friend, face-to-face is always best. The Don’ts: Don’t be fake: It can be so easy to hide your true self behind social media, but it can be hard to keep up fake appearances. Be yourself. Remember, your friends send you friend requests based on the real YOU, so be that person online. Don’t share sadness: It can be so easy to share everything depressing that happens in your life with the social media world. Don’t. Keep the gloomy posts to a minimum, you don’t want social media to become your dumping ground. Don’t believe everything you read: Not everything you read on Facebook is the truth.
Explore the source, the author, and the information in the post or article. If it looks suspect, it probably is. Don’t avoid other tasks: You find yourself on Instagram, and before you know it an hour has passed. You’ve got a pile of homework to finish and dinner with a friend. While social networking is great if used at the right time, it’s important to not let it take over your life. Don’t be a know-it-all: Sitting behind a computer screen may give you a higher level of confidence, but resist the urge to be a know-it-all in your posts and comments. Social networking is a great way to communicate with friends and update others with statuses, photos, and videos. It is a major part of everyday life. While spending time using social media, remember these ten do’s and don’ts. You will be able to improve your online presence, and it may prove to be valuable when looking for a career. Krispy Kreme knows that our simple Fundraising program is making a difference for chapters and students. Here’s a recent example: “The fundraiser for Krispy Kreme was one of the easiest and most profitable fundraisers we had to help get us to Nationals for FBLA. It was so easy to work with the store as well and we made 50% profit. We do not have a doughnut shop in town, much less a Krispy Kreme to have hot fresh doughnuts. I highly recommend this fundraiser due to the high percentage of profit you can make, plus it is a quick and easy turn around to get the money you need for your organization.”—Jennifer McClendon, Sundown High School FBLA

Chapter News
GEORGIA Virginia College—Augusta Phi Beta Lambda set a chapter goal to give back to their community. Chapter members participated by volunteering for Arts in the Hearts Festival, a yearly festival with several different vendors, which features cuisines from cultures all over the world. PBL chapter members were assigned to the children's area where members assisted the youth in getting a passport. Once children visited each country, they would return to the children's area and receive a gift from the volunteers. PBL members enjoyed sharing this fun activity with the children.
FLORIDA Pasco-Hernando State College's Spring Hill campus worked with their Student Government Association in hosting a welcome week for new and returning students. The event was a week long and included distributing free supplies to stay organized and PBL information to put the semester and students' future careers on a "Journey to Success." PBL officers provided guidance and recruitment help to all other organizations on campus. Thanks to involvement in other organizations and of course PBL's own recruiting, chapter membership has increased by 150%. Thanks to the PHSC Spring Hill campus for showing great leadership.
