ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

“We continue to put our members in the best position to network, grow, and gain insight.” The past year has been another exciting period for the French Chamber in Hong Kong. From a full calendar of standout events to an ever-evolving business services offering, there has been no shortage of highlights. On an internal level, the process of clearly defining our values is a step we feel is firmly in line with the Chamber’s standing as a prominent actor in Hong Kong’s business community. Underpinning this standing is the strong relationships we have built with local organisations and institutions – a theme that has been further developed this year and which is an important part of our offer. But it is also the input of our members that allows us to thrive. On behalf of the entire French Chamber team, we would like to thank you – our members – for your continued support and engagement.

3

Our values The French Chamber in Hong Kong has always been grounded in firm values. We’re driven by a strong belief that the way we work is just as important as the work itself. After reecting internally throughout the year and over three decades of living and breathing these values, we decided it was time to put them on paper.

A local engagement The French Chamber enjoys strong relationships with a number of important local partners. Constructive and regular dialogue with the HKSAR Government ensures that the Chamber remains an important actor in Hong Kong’s business ecosystem. The Chamber voices its opinions on Government policies and initiatives which concern its members through the Policy & Consultation Committee while also regularly welcoming Government officials to talk at events and committee meetings. Collaboration with bodies such as Invest Hong Kong, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and Intercham on events and networking also help to strengthen the ties between our business communities. The Chamber likewise has close relationships with the various French institutions in Hong Kong including the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, and Business France, to ensure full representation of the city’s French community which is today one of the most prominent in Asia.

10

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

A regional platform Over 20 establishments make up the network of French Chambers in the Asia region. This makes the Chamber a prime access point and a launch-pad for expansion across the region. The Chamber communicates closely with this network, meeting its counterparts throughout the year to explore avenues for mutual collaboration and referring members who are looking to enter other markets. French Chamber members are also able to benefit from hot-desk access in the various business centres across the regional network while on overseas business trips.

11

Our Councillors The French Chamber is governed by 40 councillors, elected by the Chamber’s members during the Annual General Meeting. They represent a broad crosssection of French, local and international business actors from entrepreneurs to executives at large MNCs. Councillors work closely with the Executive Committee and monitor the Chamber’s activity as well as approve long-term strategies, business plans and the annual budget.

Financial Report The financial statements of 1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019 have been audited by Baker Tilly Hong Kong.

44

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

The environment remained challenging for the French Chamber in Hong Kong during the year ending 30 June 2019. The Business Services activity faced a number of external challenges such as tighter bank regulations and lacklustre economic conditions in France, making it more challenging for French companies to set up businesses in Hong Kong. Moreover, this explains that mission revenues have significantly decreased. However, preparations have been made by the Chamber in recent years by developing and diversifying its range of services, and by expanding its Business Centre to diversify its sources of revenue. Once again, a large number of events were organised throughout the year, some of which have become larger, more prestigious and recurrent as signature events. These large-scale events are profitable and contribute to building the Chamber’s reputation as a key player in Hong Kong’s business community Quality services continue to be provided to members especially through committee meetings and high-level insights, which contributes greatly to the fidelity of members. The balanced business model and the diversity of the Chamber’s offer between its Business Services department and its Members Services department mitigates the risk of a more pronounced economic downturn in the coming year. Such a balance has also contributed to the Chamber posting positive income after tax for the 10th consecutive year.

The Centres provide skills training, job matching services or career assistance, affordable meals, as well as a valuable sense of community for all beneficiaries.
