It’s been a year of great highlights once again for the French Chamber in Hong Kong. Standout signature events, new initiatives and a reinforced business services offering.
“The Chamber’s connections with local organisations continue to strengthen, making us a true facilitator between the Hong Kong and French business communities” On a personal level, I’m delighted to take over as Executive Director after a highly enjoyable year as Head of Members Services. I’d like to thank my predecessor Delphine Colson for her six years of service to the Chamber and the plaudits must go to her, as well as the whole team, for what has been a successful 2017-18. The Chamber’s connections with local organisations continue to strengthen, making us a true facilitator between the Hong Kong and French business communities. Our partnerships and dialogue with these local actors has helped bring increased visibility to the many important initiatives we have embarked on this year. But it’s the engagement of our members which helps to make much of this possible. Thank you for your valuable support once again this year as we continue to drive our community forward. A REGIONAL PLATFORM
PARTNERS
Over 20 establishments make up the network of French Chambers in the Asia region. This makes the Chamber a prime access point and a launch-pad for expansion across the region. The Chamber communicates closely with this network, meeting its counterparts throughout the year to explore avenues for mutual collaboration and referring members who are looking to enter other markets. French Chamber members are also able to benefit from hot-desk access in the various business centres across the regional network while on overseas business trips.
A LOCAL ENGAGEMENT The French Chamber enjoys strong relationships with a number of important local partners. Constructive and regular dialogue with the HKSAR Government ensures that the Chamber remains an important actor in Hong Kong’s business ecosystem. The Chamber voices its opinions on Government policies and initiatives which concern its members through the Policy & Consultation Committee while also regularly welcoming Government officials to talk at events and committee meetings. Collaboration with bodies such as Invest Hong Kong, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and Intercham on events and networking also helps to strengthen the ties between our business communities. The Chamber likewise has close relationships with the various French institutions in Hong Kong including the Consulate General of Hong Kong and Macau, and Business France, to ensure full representation of the city’s French community which is today one of the most prominent in Asia.

FOUNDATION The French Chamber Foundation was created in 2014 and is registered in Hong Kong as a charitable organization. The Foundation’s primary objective is to be involved in the fight against poverty, and more precisely, to assist workers living under the poverty line and struggling to make ends meet, despite being professionally active. The French Chamber Foundation is an affiliate of the French Chamber of Commerce.
THE FOUNDATION IN NUMBERS There’s more to the Foundation than providing affordable meals to low-income workers. The Foundation aims to improve the living situation of these workers through a multifaceted approach which also includes skills training and job matching. These are the numbers making a true difference to low-income workers across Hong Kong.
WHY HERE AND NOW? In Hong Kong, according to the last Poverty report published in 2018, 1 out of 5 lives below poverty line (1.38 million of the city’s 7.35 million residents) Poverty line is: HK$4,000 / month for a single person HK$9,800 / month for a two-person household HK$15,000 / month for a three-person household Poor despite working 145,100 “working poor” families, representing 480,800 people. 80% of these families count a least 3 members and most of them have only one working member.
A MULTIFACETED APPROACH The Foundation operates four Lunch Clubs across Hong Kong, providing affordable meals to low-income workers as well as valuable self-development services including skills training and job matching to help them improve their livelihoods. The Foundation was named as a ‘Caring Company’ for the second consecutive year by Hong Kong Council Social Service while key partnerships with NGOs such as Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, Kwun Tong Baptist Swatow Church and Food Angel were renewed.

BUSINESS REVIEW The financial statements of 1 July 2017 – 30 June 2018 have been audited by Baker Tilly Hong Kong.
FINANCIAL REPORT
The environment remained challenging for the Chamber during the year ending 30 June 2018. One major client of the French Chamber – a foreign government agency – has stopped its activity in Hong Kong following changes in its global policies. As a result, this agency was no longer in need of the services offered by the Chamber. However, the French Chamber has prepared in recent years for this event by developing and diversifying its range of services, and by expanding its Business Centre to develop more sources of revenues and offset the loss of activity related to this client. The French Chamber also continues to regularly provide quality services to its members with insightful events and committee meetings, which contributes greatly to the fidelity of its members year after year. The French Chamber’s balanced business model and the diversity of its offer between its Business Services department and its Members Services department not only mitigates the risk of an economic downturn in the future, but also helps generate a positive income after tax for the 9th consecutive year.
