Welcome to a New Year of Inspiration! We have so many opportunities in store for you this year and hope you engage and become inspired as you grow your real-world skills and leadership through The Ultimate Leadership Experience available through being a member of FCCLA. Each year, we have the honor of meeting and working with amazing youth leaders like you. We love hearing about your work and the positive impact you are having on others. As a member of FCCLA, your leadership is reaching new heights, you inspire others, and your commitment and service is building a foundation for success in your family, career, and community. When I stop to consider what inspires me, my mind immediately goes to my family. My parents were dedicated to providing a foundation built on faith, family, and community. We worked hard, helped others, and enjoyed time together as a family. Parents and families are an important source of inspiration. Families may look different for all of us, but at the end of the day, they are the ones who are there for us.
From the Desk of ...
Our FCCLA family is the same way. My inspiration to serve FCCLA is YOU, the FCCLA family. Your dedication, your service, and your leadership inspire me. It is through your work that FCCLA remains strong and is able to continue to provide opportunities for students through Family and Consumer Sciences education. I challenge us all to focus this year on being an inspiration to others. Inspire your friends to join, inspire other educators to become advisers, inspire students to “Say YES to FCS”, inspire those in need, inspire those who are tired, and, most importantly, look in the mirror and know you inspire FCCLA. Leaders inspire success not by what they accomplish, but by what they inspire others to do. It is through leaders like you that together we can all remain inspired to make this the greatest year for FCCLA yet. I hope to see you at conferences and would love to learn about your success and needs. I look forward to serving with you!
FCCLA Executive Director
Hello, FCCLA!
I am excited and honored to serve as your 2017-18 National President and look forward to a great year ahead. As we prepare to inspire others this year, the National Executive Council plans to have a goal each month related to how to inspire our members. I want to encourage each of you to do the same, taking the time to make a difference in someone’s life. Never doubt the impact you can have on someone else – even the smallest act can be influential! My challenge to you is to intentionally carry out a small act of kindness each week this year, whether it be talking to a shy classmate, thanking the janitor, or staying after class to talk with your teacher. Share your acts of kindness by tagging the NEC on social media. We would love to see how you are inspiring others this year! We are looking forward to the opportunity to inspire each of you to reach your potential and to, in turn, inspire others around you! There are incredible opportunities to further your FCCLA journey and grow as a leader. Consider participating in Capitol Leadership and our National Cluster Meetings in D.C. or Oklahoma City this fall, and be sure to get involved in national programs and Competitive Events. Wishing you the best this year! Never forget: you can make a difference!

Why did you join FCCLA?
I joined FCCLA because my mom forced me to, but it has been the most amazing experience of my life! FCCLA has taught me how to be a leader, the importance of communication, how to become a better public speaker, how to face your fears and attain your goals, and what it means to truly work as a team. I have been able to travel more, learn more, and achieve more through FCCLA than any other organization I have been involved with.
Why did you join FCCLA?
I joined FCCLA because it gave my generation a platform for change. I’ve found that often the ideas of people our age are shot down simply because we are young. FCCLA taught me that, with successful planning and teamwork, anything can be accomplished. No task is as daunting as it seems when you break it into parts and take your time to do it well.

Why did you join FCCLA?
When I started 7th grade, there were only two organizations available to join. I decided to give FCCLA a shot. Little did I know that this organization would completely change my life. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and form friendships with people from all across the country. I also know that the skills I have gained throughout my time in this organization will help me now, in college, and in the future.

I joined FCCLA so I would stay on the right path throughout school and grow as a leader. FCCLA has made me into the person I am today and has given me many opportunities, such as serving as a state officer for two years.

Why did you join FCCLA?
I joined because I saw something in the FCCLA members that I didn’t see in anyone else. They were confident, better leaders, took charge in the classroom, and worked better with others. Since the beginning of my FCCLA journey almost four years ago, I have changed so much as a person. Through FCCLA, I have made connections all across our country, have developed my soft skills, have sharpened my leadership abilities, and have prepared for adult life.

I primarily joined for the free candy and days off from school, but I discovered after my first state meeting the opportunities and actions that I could take to better serve my community and family. FCCLA has given me opportunities that I wouldn’t normally get from going to a small-town school. It showed me that the world is filled with opportunities and that you need to have perseverance and determination in order to take those opportunities and transform them into your dream.

Why did you join FCCLA?
My story of joining FCCLA is unique. My mom is a FACS teacher and FCCLA adviser. As a child, I spent most of my time around her and her students. The fearlessness of the leaders that came before me inspired me to become one myself. FCCLA has given me the skills and resources to be the person I am today and has prepared me to take on future roles with confidence.

It helped me transition through my “awkward phase” by instilling the belief in me that I have value. It has helped me grow stronger in my ability to speak publicly and communicate with others. It has opened my eyes to the needs of the community around me.

2017 National Leadership Conference Business Session Financial Report Tate and Tryon performed an audit over the financial statement of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), which is comprised of the balance sheet as of August 31, 2016, the related statement of activities and cash flows for the year then ended, and the related notes to the financial statement. This audit was performed in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America (GAAP). FCCLA received an unmodified opinion, which is the desired opinion, meaning that the financial statements are fairly presented and free of material misstatements. For the year ended August 31, 2016, FCCLA recorded a net surplus of $1,184,618, comprised of revenue and expenses of $5,190,093 and $4,005,475, respectively. Total assets increased by $958,028 to $3,947,607, led by a $1,637,333 increase in investments and offset by a $555,628 decrease in cash and cash equivalents, as compared to August 31, 2015. Liabilities decreased by $226,590 to $314,396, led by a $350,966 decrease in notes payable, as compared to August 31, 2015. This decrease was offset by a $132,383 increase in deferred revenue, which represents funds received, but not yet earned, due to FCCLA deferring the use of these funds to a later time.

Plan to Make FCCLA Week the Best One Ever! Make a plan Planning an event may seem like a lot of work, but National FCCLA has made preparing for the 2018 FCCLA Week easier than ever by providing a daily theme for chapters to follow. Check out the themes to the right and work with your chapter to create a list of ideas to implement in your community each day. Don’t wait too long to make your plan! You’ll need time to prepare and carry out the rest of the items in our top five list!
Connect with other FCCLA chapters Want to make a really big splash? Try connecting with other local FCCLA chapters to double up on your FCCLA Week efforts! Don’t have any chapters nearby? Look regionally, statewide, or even nationally to find other chapters to join in on your idea. Reach out to your state officers to find out how to get connected with other chapters.
Invite people Do your research and identify local leaders, business owners, community representatives, and policy-makers who may be interested in your efforts. Create personalized invitations for your FCCLA Week events and try to hand deliver them if possible. Make sure to include a schedule of events so VIPs know what time to come, and be prepared for who will greet them and what you will have them do at the event if they do attend.
Create buzz before FCCLA Week Once you have a plan in place, promote it! Use social media, flyers, and personal invitations to let students at your school know about the events. Network with other clubs at your school and invite them to help. Tag supporting businesses and community members on social media and let them know how excited you are to work with them. Don’t forget to create a press release about your event and get local media involved!
Don’t forget to thank your supporters One of the best ways you can earn continued support is to thank community members for the work they’ve done. Send thank-you cards to the VIPs you invited, even if they did not attend. Report back on the success of your event and include a save-the-date for next year’s FCCLA Week. Thank your school administration, parents, teachers, and other students who helped you, and, most importantly, thank your fellow FCCLA members for a job well done!

FCCLA’s Advocacy 101 What is an advocate? An advocate is a person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy. As members of FCCLA, our cause is to help today’s teens prepare for tomorrow’s workforce, and to make a difference in our families, careers, and communities through Family and Consumer Sciences education. YOU are an advocate!
How do I advocate? Letters: Writing a letter is a very personal way to voice your opinions, and it demonstrates your dedication to a position. Letters written to members of Congress should be sent only to those from your state. Send via email, and do not send form letters. Be clear in your ask, and give examples of how what you’re asking impacts your state. Write briefly on a maximum of 1-2 subjects. Always say thank you. Social Media: Social media can be a great method to get the attention of your elected representative or their staff. Telephone: Calls made all at once to individual offices can catch the attention of policymakers and their senior staff. Face to Face Contact: These meetings provide instant feedback and can provide a personal connection.
20 • Sept/Oct 2017
Get Involved Who do I talk to about an issue I’m advocating for? First, decide if the issue you are advocating for impacts you on a local, county, state, or national level. Depending on the issue, there are multiple channels for communicating your message. Here are a few examples: Schools: school administrators, school board, and/or PTA Locally Elected Officials: town council, mayor, etc. If it’s a county-wide issue, you could reach out to county officials. State Officials: If it impacts your state, you’ll want to reach out to your state-level elected officials and/or agencies. For example, to advocate for changes to roadway infrastructure near schools, you may need to work with your state’s transportation agency. To promote teen financial literacy, you might work with your state’s treasury office.
Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know something. You don’t have to be an expert on an issue to advocate for it! But always follow up with the answer.
Where can I get advocacy training?
Save the dates of November 8-10, 2017, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.
CAPITOL
Every year, FCCLA brings student leaders and advisers to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to participate in FCCLA’s Capitol Leadership meeting. During Capitol Leadership, students receive training focusing on networking, professionalism, strategic planning, and advocacy around key teen-centered current issues. Students advocate for Family and Consumer Sciences education by showing policymakers how their support for education impacts teens in preparing to be college- and career-ready. This is a terrific opportunity to promote what your FCCLA chapters have been doing in your representative’s home state!
LEADERSHIP
For state or national issues, you should communicate with your state’s representatives. Coalition Building: Are there partners you can work with to strengthen or multiply your message? Forming a coalition of groups who have similar goals can be very effective. For example, FCCLA collaborates with other career and technical student organizations to advocate for funding for career and technical education. Relationship Building: The best way to promote your message is to be courteous and to build relationships. Here are some brief tips to help you build a relationship with a policymaker and/or their staff: • Educate staffers. They may not know about this issue! Give them concise, clear information to make it easy for them to share your message with their boss. • Follow up, but always be courteous. • Know your opponents. Who is on the other side of this issue? Why? What are your counterpoints? • All politics are local. Remind the person how it impacts their state, town, etc. • Always say thank you.
What are some other advocacy tips? • • • • • • • •
Be informed. Be prepared. Be calm. Give examples. Always have an ask. Find common ground. Be friendly and open. Check in post-visit.
FCCLA’s Advocacy Training and interactive sessions will leave you well prepared for your in-person meetings on the Hill. Learn more by visiting www.fcclainc.org/CapitolLeadership.
What are some things I can advocate for?
As an FCCLA member, you are encouraged to stand up and speak out for what is meaningful to you. FCCLA’s eight national programs provide several opportunities for you to use your voice and make a difference. Here are some examples: • Family and Consumer Sciences Education • Teen traffic safety • Families • Financial literacy • Teen health • Community needs These are just a few examples of the types of causes you can advocate for. Meet with your chapter and talk about your interests and passions. You can work together and advocate for change in your community!

#BeTheFirst Tobacco-Free Generation
Opportunities & Awards
Take action to #BeTheFirst tobacco-free generation with FCCLA and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids! This fall, FCCLA is encouraging chapters across the nation to get involved in efforts that support our partnership with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) as we work together to Take Down Tobacco and #BetheFirst tobacco-free generation! The trainings and resources offered by CTFK help youth understand the dangers of tobacco use and how their voices can help create the first tobaccofree generation. Why get involved? In the US, tobacco use kills more than 480,000 people every year – more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. As part of FCCLA’s Student Body national program, we are partnering with CTFK to help reduce tobacco’s deadly toll. CTFK advocates for public policies proven to prevent kids from smoking, to help smokers quit, and to protect everyone from secondhand smoke. YOU can play an important role in the fight against tobacco and its harmful effects. Ready to take action? You can sign up individually to complete the Taking Down Tobacco 101 training online at takingdowntobacco.org OR talk with your adviser about completing Taking Down Tobacco 101 as a group. If you are one of the first 100 chapters to report details about your training back to FCCLA, you will be entered for a chance to win $100! You don’t want to stop there! FCCLA chapters that host a training for at least 75 youth can enter to win one of three $1,000 cash prizes.

Unite in Red Campaign
Opportunities & Awards
In order to help our youth members unite in red at the 2018 National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA, national FCCLA created the Unite in Red Fund Campaign. Over the last two years, we have received donations from FCCLA staff, current and former NEC members, Board of Directors members, chapter advisers, state advisers, partners, Alumni and Associates members, and many other individual donors who support FCCLA’s mission. All of the donations received for the Unite in Red Fund allow FCCLA to provide jackets to members across the nation. Donations for the Unite in Red Fund can be made completely online by visiting www.fcclainc.org/UniteinRed. Receiving a red jacket helps members feel empowered to create positive change in their schools and communities. The red jackets also help to create a consistent appearance, symbolizing the empowerment of a united FCCLA and demonstrating youth leadership.
Encourage your family and community members to make a donation to FCCLA’s Unite in Red Campaign this year at www.fcclainc.org/UniteinRed!

New State-Level Recognition for Student Traffic Safety Projects During the 2017-2018 school year, students can win a new state-level FACTS award! Thanks to FCCLA’s partnership with Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), FCCLA members can connect directly with GHSA representatives in their state through participation in FCCLA’s Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety (FACTS) national program. FACTS engages youth on personal, vehicle, and road safety. Did you know you have the power to help improve safety at your school, among your classmates, and in your community? By participating in a FACTS project, you have the chance to educate your peers about ways to improve safety for people, vehicles, and roads.

HOW IT WORKS 3/1 MARCH 1, 2018

FCCLA chapters submit FACTS program award applications online by March 1, 2018
GHSA state representatives assist in selecting a winner for each state
Each state’s winner will receive a $500 cash award and be considered for the national award
NATIONAL WINNER The national FACTS program award winners will receive cash awards and special recognition at National Leadership Conference, online, and in Teen Times magazine.
Use the resources found in FCCLA’s FACTS program guide and Ford DSFL’s online program, The Academy, at www.drivingskillsforlife.com/academy. For more information about the state-level awards and FACTS, visit www.fcclainc.org/FACTS.
Learning the realities of traffic safety builds an understanding of what it means to drive safely – today and in the future. Teen driver-related traffic fatalities have increased – up an alarming 10% in 2015. It’s critical that we give young drivers the skills they need to stay safe on the road. FCCLA’s FACTS program offers a unique opportunity to do just that. FCCLA has historically awarded three FACTS program winners nationally, but this year a platform has been created to recognize students on the state level as well. Through a generous donation from Ford DSFL, state GHSA representatives will award $500 to the first-place winner selected from the FCCLA FACTS program applications in their state. So how do you apply? Start this fall by working with your chapter on a FACTS project. Details on FACTS, as well as award application information, are available at www.fcclainc.org/FACTS.
Poster included in 2017-2018 Membership Kit and available for download in the FCCLA adviser portal. Ford DSFL offers “The Academy”, a free online collection of interactive videos, tips, and quizzes from Ford DSFL that students can use to develop their FACTS projects. Additional resources are available to students who make the connection to their state’s GHSA representative.
Applications are due March 1, 2018.
