MENTAL HEALTH

4 tips for embracing winter Do you hate winter or loathe the cold? If so, here are a few tips for making the most of what the season has to offer. 1. BRING THE LIGHT INDOORS The short days and long, dark nights of winter can take a toll. This is especially true for people who work indoors with few windows. To help brighten up your space, hang festive lights and garlands and consider investing in a light therapy lamp.

2. GET OUTSIDE To keep your spirits up in winter, it’s important to spend time outdoors. Invest in warm, comfortable clothing, including boots, mittens, a coat, a hat and a scarf, and be sure to bundle up so you can get plenty of sunshine and fresh air.

3. DIVE INTO YOUR HOBBIES Whether you enjoy reading, painting, knitting, playing board games, baking or decorating, winter is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the indoor hobbies you love.

4. FOCUS ON THE OPPORTUNITIES Winter has its charms, and it’s hard to deny that snow-covered landscapes can be beautiful. In addition, winter activities like skating, skiing, sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are sure to keep you busy. Plus, seasonal festivals, shows and special events can be fun to attend. If you’ve tried everything but can’t seem to get out of your winter funk, you may be suffering from seasonal depression. In this case, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your

doctor.

The consequences of neglecting your children’s dental health Poor oral hygiene can have serious, long-term effects on your children’s health, and young kids don’t usually have the maturity or dexterity to take care of their own teeth. Therefore, it falls on parents to help children maintain healthy teeth and gums. Here’s what could happen if you neglect your kids’ dental health. Your children could develop:

• Dental abscesses • Gum disease • Painful cavities • Persistent bad breath • Sensitive teeth • Tooth decay

Dental treatments can be expensive, time consuming and at times unpleasant. To avoid unwanted trips to the dentist, it’s important to teach your kids good habits and monitor your little ones to ensure they properly brush their teeth. To help keep your children’s teeth healthy, make an appointment for a cleaning and checkup at a dental clinic near you.

DID YOU KNOW? Cavities in baby teeth must be treated. This is because dental decay is caused by bacteria, which can spread and damage teeth growing below the gumline.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT DRY SKIN IN WINTER?

SKIN HEALING STUDIO

www.skinbykaroline.com 450 W Broad Street, Suite 319. Falls Church, VA

Low temperatures, cold winds and dry indoor air can make skin lose moisture in winter. Here are some tips to help you keep your skin soft and hydrated this season. 1. TAKE SHORTER SHOWERS. Long, hot showers might be enjoyable, but they also remove your skin’s protective oils and dry it out even more. Spend less time in the shower or bath, and opt for lukewarm water instead.

2. USE THE RIGHT SOAPS. Gentle cleansers or creams that contain nut butters or oils, for example, will protect your skin against damage while also keeping it hydrated. You should also avoid using exfoliants.

3. MOISTURIZE REGULARLY. For deep-penetrating skincare, use fat-based body butters and moisturizers or thermal water. If your skin is particularly dry, choose a rich, soothing cream. For best results, apply the product immediately after showering or washing your hands while your skin is still damp.

4. STAY HYDRATED. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Additionally, you can maximize your skin’s health by eating foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. If your dry skin persists despite a rigorous care routine, consult an area expert.

PREVENTIVE HEALTH

How to prevent knee pain as you age For many, knee pain is seen as an inevitable part of aging. However, it doesn’t have to be. Here are four things you can do to keep your knees healthy and preserve your mobility as you get older. 1. STRENGTHEN YOUR MUSCLES Strengthening your upper and lower leg muscles, including your hamstrings, quadriceps and hip flexors, can help reduce stress on your joints.

2. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY BODY WEIGHT Being overweight can put significant stress on your knees. In fact, for every excess pound you carry, you put about four extra pounds of pressure on your knee joints. Therefore, maintaining a healthy body weight can be a significant factor in remaining mobile and preventing knee pain.

3. CHOOSE LOW-IMPACT EXERCISES Regularly engaging in low-impact activities like wal king, cycling, swimming, Pilates and yoga can help keep your knee cartilage healthy and prevent injuries.

4. WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES Properly fitted shoes that offer adequate support will keep your knees in alignment and reduce unnecessary impact. For this reason, wearing the right shoes can prevent knee pain and injuries. If you’re suffering from knee pain, don’t ignore it. Talk to your doctor immediately to find a solution.

Orthorexia during the pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of many people. For some, the circumstances have prompted or aggravated eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and the lesser known but increasingly common condition called orthorexia. If you’ve been increasingly preoccupied with healthy eating, here’s what you should know.

What is orthorexia? With so much information about nutrition readily available, people who want to adopt a healthier diet may feel guilty about eating food with too much salt and sugar or not enough nutrients. However, for people with orthorexia, healthy eating is an obsession. Among other things, it can cause them to develop behaviours like: • Banning specific foods or ingredients, such as gluten, without medical justification • Planning meals in great detail

• Feeling guilty about eating unhealthy food, even on occasion • Thinking about food for several hours a day • Eating purely for the sake of nutritional intake rather than enjoyment • Spending a lot of time analyzing and comparing product labels at the grocery store

For many people with orthorexia, the pandemic worsened their obsession with healthy eating, either by preventing them from going to the gym, giving them more free time to research the topic or simply making concerns about their health a higher priority. In a society that highly values healthy eating, this disorder can be particularly insidious. People often take pride in being able to control what they eat, and they’re frequently praised for their discipline. If you think you may be struggling with an eating disorder, or you want to improve your relationship with food, take advantage of the free resources avai lable online and consult a psychologist or doctor.
