Albert Nobbs
A Cat in Paris
Le Havre
A peculiar upstairs/downstairs tale about a woman in 19th century patriarchal Ireland (reminiscent of Huston’s ‘The Dead’/Joyce’s ‘The Dubliners’) who disguises herself as a man to secure work in a fancy Dublin hotel. The isolated ‘Albert’ (Glenn Close, reprising her stage performance) hoards her meagre wages for a secure future, but all is knocked sideways with the arrival of a young woman, with whom ‘Albert’ must share a room. Close, who also produced and wrote the song lyrics, reprises her stage performance of the cross-dressing lead, and is magnificent.
A jazzy, film noir for children featuring delightfully old-school animation. Dino is a cool cat. By day, he lives with a girl called Zoe, whose mother is a police officer. By night, he works with Nico, a jewellery thief. When Dino gives Zoe a present of a diamond bracelet, she sets out to discover his secret and unwittingly stumbles upon a team of gangsters plotting a big robbery. Zoe finds herself in danger and it is up to Dino and Nico to try and save her.
A charming comedy with the trademark, dead-pan style of quirky Finnish director Kaurismaki. Elderly Marcel lives a decent life, in the run down Normandy port, shining shoes and dividing his spare time between contented domesticity with his wife, and his compatriots at the local bar. His life is given new purpose when he discovers a young North African immigrant needing safe passage to London. Marcel becomes involved in the boy’s plight but soon attracts the attention of Inspector Monet (in a belted mac and trilby straight out of ‘Casablanca’)…

Moonrise Kingdom
Monsieur Lazhar
Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, this latest comedy drama from indie director Wes Anderson (‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, ‘The Royal Tenebaums’) tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness, galvanising the town into action to pursue them. A rich ensemble cast of Anderson regulars is headed up by Bruce Willis as the local sheriff and Edward Norton as the Khaki Scout troop leader with Bill Murray and Frances McDormand playing the young girl's parents.
On learning of the abrupt death of a primary school teacher, M. Lazhar, a middle-aged Algerian immigrant, goes to the school to offer his services. Quickly hired to replace the deceased, he finds the children in grief and the establishment in crisis. Little by little mutual understanding develops between pupils and teacher – who himself has a painful past – and a healing process begins for both parties. Canada’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film this is a potent, touching and insightful study of integration, bereavement and, above all, relationships.

Being Elmo
Light-hearted film adaptation of the Broadway juke-box musical smash hit about two young people pursuing their dreams of stardom in Hollywood. Adam Shankman (‘Hairspray’) directs this rock ‘n’ roll romance with a cast including a villainous Catherine Zeta-Jones, and all-cylindersfiring Tom Cruise as ageing rocker, Stacee Jaxx. The musical numbers are a roll call of ‘eighties rock hits from artists including Journey, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and Foreigner - stunningly mounted and lots of fun.
In this inspiring, award-winning documentary we meet the man behind Elmo from ‘Sesame Street’, the the redfurred puppet beloved by children and adults across the globe. Kevin Clash was a kid from a modest Baltimore background whose childhood determination and dedication to his life-long passion to be a puppeteer are portrayed here with uplifting warmth and joyousness. A sweet portrait of the heart and soul behind the good-natured muppet, a revealing look behind the scenes of the Jim Henson universe, and an infectious call to follow your dreams.

The Angel’s Share
Oliver Sherman
This bitter sweet comedy from regular director/writer double-act Ken Loach/ Paul Laverty follows young Robbie who determines that he will not allow his newborn son to follow in his own ill-advised footsteps. Just escaping a prison sentence Robbie is given one last chance and, while serving a community service order, he meets a group of lads who, like him, find it impossible to find work because of their criminal records. But opportunity comes their way when a visit to a whisky distillery offers a way out of their hopeless lives.
Solitary veteran Sherman Oliver travels to a rural town to reconnect with Franklin, the soldier who saved his life during the war. But it soon becomes clear that an insurmountable gulf has developed between the two men and the disparity in their post-war lives quickly causes rifts and reawakens uncomfortable feelings. The tension in this superb, nerve-splintering drama is expertly built as the house-guest’s unstable presence and Franklin’s conflicting feelings of loyalty to his family and his former comrade threaten to overthrow his hard won stability.

The director and writer/star of ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ reteam for this irreverent comedy that begins where most romantic comedies end: after the wooing, and the “I will”, when the practicalities of fixing the wedding day take over…. The eagerly anticipated new Pixar animation set in the Highlands of a mythical Scotland and featuring an all-star cast and crew of Scottish talent. Impetuous, flame-haired Merida (Kelly Macdonald) is the daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path, Merida defies an age-old sacred custom thereby inadvertently unleashing chaos and fury in the kingdom. Turning to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted (as in the all the best mythic tales) an ill-fated wish. With all the hallmarks of a new Disney/Pixar classic and resonating with the cultural mythology of Scotland and the beauty of our landscape, this is the must-see film of the year for adults and children alike.
The epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's ‘Batman’ stars the trilogy’s regulars who are joined by two fearsomely electric antagonists: Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as a brutal terrorist leader laying waste to Gotham. Resurfacing after taking the fall for Dent’s (Two-Face) crimes eight years earlier, the Dark Knight embarks on a mission to protect the city that has branded him an enemy. Shot using Imax cameras to optimise the film image, Nolan and his long-time creative collaborators from ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Inception’ give us a worthy and awe-inspiring finale.

Adapted from popular series of French books for children (written by René Goscinny of ‘Asterix’ fame) this slightly absurdist, child’s-eye-view comedy topped the French box office on its release and shone as an audience favourite at film festivals around the world. Eight-year-old Nicolas lives a supremely happy life until an overheard conversation leads him to surmise that his mother is pregnant. Horrified, he envisions the worst and so Nicolas and his friends decide to cook up a series of wild schemes to dispose of the baby.
The next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise departs from the Robert Ludlum originals and introduces a new hero: Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner/’The Hurt Locker’, ‘The Avengers Assemble’). The screenwriter of all entries in the series – Tony Gilroy – here takes on the directing role also. Strictly under wraps at the time of going to press the film promises to be a suspenseful action thriller focussing on the life-or-death stakes surrounding CIA operative Cross, triggered by the ‘Treadstone’ conspiracy in the first three films.
Seth MacFarlane, genius behind the irreverent TV show ‘Family Guy’ (as well as the voice of the show’s Peter, Brian and Stewie Griffin), directs this live-action/CGI blend and provides the voice for a cherished teddy bear that has come to life as the result of a childhood wish. The bear’s owner, John (Wahlberg) is now a grown man, trying to shake off the foul-mouthed Ted when the latter’s slacker lifestyle clashes with John’s attempts to woo the beautiful Lori. A decidedly adult film – crude, vulgar and very funny.

A Hippodrome 100 Event, marking the centenary of Scotland’s first cinema. Join Professor Charles Barr, film historian and leading authority on the films of Alfred Hitchcock for this unique presentation, shedding light on the Titanic film which was to have been Hitchcock's first Hollywood assignment, in 1939. Hitchcock was clearly drawn to the Titanic story, describing it as a “marvellously dramatic subject for a motion picture” but Selznick replaced the project with ‘Rebecca’. Professor Barr will combine a presentation of his fascinating research with a specially edited sequence, drawing on shipboard extracts from Hitchcock’s other films, to show 'what might have been'. Professor Barr is the author ‘English Hitchcock’ and the ‘BFI Film Classic’ on Vertigo and has contributed to several documentaries and DVD releases about the director’s work. Sat 1 Sep 19:30

Coinciding with the Dalai Lama’s visit to Scotland in June the Hippodrome presents a special screening of this award-winning documentary followed by a Q&A with director Khashyar Darvich.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, Jean Vigo’s timeless feature (completed only months before he died of TB aged just 29) is an exhilaratingly inventive masterpiece featuring lustrous camerawork and achingly charming performances. When Juliette marries Jean she comes to live on his cramped barge, joining on board a cabin boy and the elderly Père Jules. Soon bored by life on the river, Juliette slips away to the bright lights of Paris.
