If you are ‘a certain age’ you will remember watching ‘Ring of Bright Water’ on the telly… and like me you will still bear the emotional scar left by its devastating climax. Thanks to a long-awaited thumbs up from the rights holders in the States now is the time to accompany your children to our Reel Saturday screening for this essential film-going rite of passage. The film is part of a programme put together to celebrate the Year of Natural Scotland which includes two great melodramas filmed in the Hebrides and the Shetland Isles respectively, and an overdue screening of eye-opening doc ‘You’ve Been Trumped’. The wealth of natural beauty on display will make you wonder why everyone doesn’t just move here, and our urban capital city is looking pretty gorgeous too in ‘Sunshine on Leith’! But before we all break out into a chorus of ‘Flower of Scotland’ have a look at ‘The Great Hip Hop Hoax’ – the incredible but true experiences of talented Dundee-based Billy Boyd (not that one) and Gavin Bain whose Scottish accents were enough to have them laughed out of town by scornful Polydor records execs. Food for thought…
On the subject of young talent we have lined up a very special evening with two local filmmakers who have already begun to make a name for themselves both domestically and internationally. Do join us on 27th October for screenings of three of their short films, with a Q&A and a chance to chat about the ins-and-outs of the movie biz with a couple of new ‘insiders’ (see page 15 for details). The work of more young, local filmmakers will be showcased the following month when the animation ‘Teardrops on the Wings’ screens as a short before the feature: ‘The Selfish Giant’ (see page 7). This award-winning, important new feature is my top pick this season, from one of Britain’s most exciting directors – Clio Barnard. We sent Clio a copy of the animation and she had this to say “Really wonderful… I love the film within a film and the use of verbatim voices. Please congratulate all the young people involved – it’s really fantastic and I’m very pleased that you are 2 screening it alongside ‘The Selfish Giant’.” So… go see!
Special events this season include an evening of rarely screened films headlining with ‘Hell Unlimited’ (1936), co-directed by Norman McLaren and Helen Biggar, from Stirling and Glasgow respectively (see page 14). Their film is still regarded as one of the most innovative and important political films made in the UK and we are delighted to welcome Gareth Griffiths and Kim Moore to the Hippodrome to perform their new score for the film. Gareth is a BAFTA New Talent Award winning composer and sound artist based in Edinburgh, and Kim is a composer and musician who has released two successful albums with her band Zoey van Goey. I’m particularly thrilled that we will be showing the Oscar-winning anti-war short ‘Neighbours’ (1952) during the evening... another must-see that Picasso apparently described as “the best film ever made”. This season also includes our exciting programme picks from Discovery: Scotland’s International Film Festival for Young Audiences, Luminate: Scotland’s creative ageing festival, the French Film Festival, as well as a couple of super titles I’ve lined up for Big Roman Week (I’ll give you a clue: “Infamy, infamy…”!). We also have a wonderful line-up of live broadcasts and encore screenings from the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Bolshoi Ballet and the British Museum. And of course the season would not be complete without a selection of the best recent releases, from rom-coms and a juke box musical to bio-pics and documentaries. You’ll notice a wee price increase on some tickets in line with other Trust venues but I hope you agree th e Hippodrome remains great value. There are films for the school holidays, films for Halloween, and films for just any time. Find the full details in these pages. Alison Strauss Arts Development Officer (Film and Media)

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa Declared the year’s best comedy, this vehicle for Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge retains and develops all the elements that made his radio and TV shows so hilarious. When his radio station is taken over by a new media conglomerate, the mellowed but endearingly offensive Alan rightly fears he might be fired and manages to deflect the hit at the expense of a colleague. This sets in motion a chain of events which see Alan working with the police to defuse a violent siege, a role affording him a celebrity status in which he revels gloriously. Dir. Paris-Manhattan
The Conjuring
Feel-good, breezy romantic comedy about Alice – a lovelorn Parisian who looks to Woody Allen for guidance on her path through life, and dispenses his films at her pharmacy in lieu of antidepressants. In a stylistic device reminiscent of Ken Loach’s ‘Looking for Eric’ – in which Cantona became a guru for an obsessed fan – the Woody poster on Alice’s wall speaks to her directly. First-time director Lellouche clearly shares her heroine’s adoration for Woody Allen and the film is an enjoyable homage to a catalogue of his iconic films.
‘Saw’ creator, James Wan delivers oldschool scares aplenty in this so-called ‘true story’ of Ed and Lorraine Warren, renowned paranormal investigators (Amityville already under their belts), called to help a family terrorized in their secluded farmhouse by a dark presence. Set in the ‘seventies, the film relies more on mounting dread and tension rather than buckets of gore and, pleasingly, does not take itself too seriously. The result is a classic and entertaining horror that may spook even the most hardened genre fans.

What Maisie Knew
The Way, Way Back
Henry James’ 1897 novel transposes the story of a little girl buffeted between divorcing parents to present-day Manhattan. Though polarising the selfish and thoughtless parents versus the caring and constant surrogates more starkly than the source material, this affecting drama remains an outstanding picture of adult relationships and parenting seen through the clear gaze of a child. Seven-year-old Onate Aprile is entirely arresting as the child dealing with her parents' break-up and her co-stars are equally brilliant in this subtle examination of a familiar scenario.
The story of 14-year-old Duncan’s awkward, comic and sometimes painful summer holiday with his mother and her overbearing boyfriend. Duncan tentatively begins to find his place when he discovers an ally and mentor in Owen (Sam Rockwell), the gregarious and free spirited manager of the Water Wizz water park. Funny, endearing and steering a wide-berth from more obvious Hollywood clichés this is a lovely gem which considers two father figures in the dynamics of one boy’s coming-of-age.

The Great Hip Hop Hoax A terrific home-grown documentary story about two young Scottish rappers whose nationality is the only thing standing between them and global success. Derided as ‘the rapping Proclaimers’, Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain decided to reinvent themselves as Silibil and Brains. Hastily concocting a backstory and adopting flawless American accents the pair proceeded to climb the dizzy heights of fame. From here the stage is set for an astonishing account of the young men’s journey through stardom and out the other side, raising important questions about the value of authenticity and national identity. About Time
Rush
Sunshine on Leith (cert tbc)
With a screenplay by the creator of the ‘Vicar of Dibley’, ‘Four Weddings’ and ‘Black Adder’ this new feature directed and written by Richard Curtis is a super drama about fathers and sons, wrapped up as a rom-com. Familiar elements including a charming but bumbling hero, a Yankee love interest and English eccentricities are given fresh life thanks to a time-travelling plot twist. Although this device itself has been seen before in ‘Groundhog Day’ for example, it is handled here with exhilarating freshness by a great cast including the delightfully quirky Bill Nighy.
Set in the golden age of Formula 1 racing this biopic charts the merciless rivalry of privileged and handsome English playboy James Hunt and his reserved, perfectionist opponent – Austrian born Niki Lauda. Peter Morgan’s (‘The Queen’, ‘Frost/Nixon’) script follows the contrasting men between the sensational worlds of the racetrack and their glamorous private lives, whilst Ron Howard’s direction (‘Apollo 13’, ‘Backdraft’, ‘A Beautiful Mind’) is well attuned to both personal drama and high octane action.
Based on the stage hit juke box musical featuring music by The Proclaimers this is the story of two squaddies – Davy and Ally – who return home after serving in Afghanistan and must re-learn to live life outside the army, where the everyday struggles of family, jobs and relationships are newly challenging. Blessed with the writer of the original show, the film’s political context never overshadows an exuberant and uplifting drama, with great young leads supported by Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks as Davy’s parents.

Hawking
Naomi Watts (‘The Impossible’) takes on the awesome responsibility of portraying Princess Diana in a biopic that focuses on the last two years of her life when she had been separated from Prince Charles... her campaign against land mines and her affair with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan. Watts, a two-time Oscar-nominee, uncannily incarnates the iconic figure and is directed here by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the man behind the much-praised ‘Downfall’ which depicted the final 10 days of Adolf Hitler's life.
In a scenario borrowed from Tennessee Williams’ play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, Cate Blanchett plays Jasmine – a haughty but needy and deluded woman who seeks sanctuary with her more down to earth sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) when her own privileged life-style is sabotaged by her husband’s financial fraud. Flashing backwards and forwards the film is beautifully structured and serious in tone with a towering performance at its heart. Having actually played Williams’ creation Blanche du Bois on stage in 2009, Blanchett is mesmerising as the fragile and vaguely unhinged Jasmine.
A celebratory documentary about the world’s most famous living scientist. Made with unique access to Hawking's private life, this is an intimate account of Hawking’s personal journey from boyhood under-achiever to PhD genius with a Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis and attendant life expectancy prognosis that he has resoundingly defied, being now 71-yearsold. The film narrates his remarkable story with the synthesised voice that has become symbolic of the man’s triumph over disease, giving an insight not only into the importance of the man’s influence on scientists’ understanding of the universe but ultimately into an individual whose approach to life can inspire us all.

The Selfish Giant (cert tbc)
Le Weekend (cert tbc)
A crowd-pleasing rom-com about a young American’s fixation with the Regency world of her literary idol, who spends her savings on a trip to an English theme-resort catering to Austen-crazed women. In true Austen style the heroine finds herself at the mercy of a strict social class system in which the less ‘moneyed’ are excluded and she has to make do with the lower class version of the visitor experience. The film is a frothy treat and has great fun with such Austen set pieces as a grand ball and a finale of multiple engagements.
A secular reinvention of Oscar Wilde’s story in the form of social realist drama. Two young misfits find employ with a cynical scrapyard dealer but as their missions become more dangerous a wedge is driven between them. Harsh and hard-hitting but also stunningly beautiful and poetic.
Regular writing/directing duo Hanif Kureishi (‘Buddha of Suburbia’) and Roger Michell (‘Notting Hill’) team up for this beautifully observed drama about love and commitment in a married couple (Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan) who revisit Paris to revitalise their marriage. The pair run into an old friend (Jeff Goldblum) and of course the encounter is a catalyst for unfolding events for the husband and wife, who are yearning to recapture their youthful fearlessness, lack of responsibility and idealism.

Captain Phillips
Romeo and Juliet (cert tbc)
Philomena (cert tbc)
A multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Set off the coast of Somalia, both men find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. Seasoned action director Greengrass (‘Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum’, ‘Green Zone’) simultaneously delivers a pulsepounding thriller and a complex portrait of the effects of globalization.
Julian Fellowes (‘Downton Abbey’, ‘The Young Victoria’) adapts the screenplay for Shakespeare’s most often performed love story. This is a classic interpretation of the text – eschewing flashy modernisms and opting instead for period costume and ‘genuine’ Verona shooting locations. A young teenage Hailee Steinfeld – who made such a big impression as Mattie in the Coen Brothers’ ‘True Grit’ remake – is a suitably beautiful and spirited Juliet and is supported by the likes of Damian Lewis as her father Lord Capulet and Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence.
Steve Coogan in non-comedic guise plays world-weary political journalist Martin Sixsmith who is persuaded to join Philomena (Judi Dench) in her fifty year search to find the son that she gave up for adoption as a young mother in 1950s Ireland, having been sent to a convent branded as a ‘fallen woman’. Award-winning director of ‘The Queen’ Stephen Frears directs this bitter-sweet and extraordinary true story of one woman’s life-long quest and the powerful bond that grows between her and the cynical Sixsmith.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
Set in the sun-drenched Japanese seaside town of Yokohama in 1963 this touching and handsome Studio Ghibli animation focuses on a group of teens determined to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The cultural backdrop of a nation picking itself up from the devastation of World War II is deftly woven through a tale inhabited by a generation learning to approach the future through a greater understanding of a troubled past.
Based on the character from the bestselling series of books, Percy, son of Poseidon, continues his epic journey to fulfil his destiny in the second feature film outing. Percy must team up with his demi-god friends to retrieve the Golden Fleece and save their home and training ground, Camp Half-Blood. The audience is plunged straight in to the action and solid special effects as the young hero battles to resolve troubles in the Ancient World whilst grappling with being a modern teenager.

Ring of Bright Water
The Edge of the World
You’ve Been Trumped
Film adaptation of the memoir by Gavin Maxwell which records his adventures in the Scottish Highlands in the company of loveable otter Mij. Civil servant Graham Merrill brings home an otter from a London pet shop, soon realises the city is no place for his new pet and decamps North. Bill Travers plays opposite Virginia McKenna as the local doctor / love-interest – three years after their pairing as George and Joy Adamson in the similarly themed ‘Born Free’. Accomplished wildlife photography and a devastatingly memorable conclusion.
Filmed on location on Foula in the Shetland Isles, and inspired by the story of the evacuation of St Kilda, this is an evocative tale in which the story and the filming itself was moulded by the dramatic cliffs and treacherous seas of its setting. Powerful yet simple this film marked the great Michael Powell’s first independent feature, from his own original idea. The story follows two young men, Robbie and James whose disagreement over their island's economic future and whose notion of the suitability of James as a match for Robbie’s twin sister Ruth threatens to tear apart the island community.
In this David and Goliath story for the 21st century, a group of Scottish homeowners take on the celebrity billionaire Donald Trump. At stake is one of Britain's last stretches of wilderness – hundreds of acres on the northeast coast of Scotland, known to movie-lovers as the setting for the film ‘Local Hero’. And like the oil tycoon played by Burt Lancaster, Trump needs to buy out a few more locals to close the deal. The stage is set for an extraordinary summer of discontent, in this funny, horrifying and inspiring environmental parable.

The National Theatre presents a major new production of William Shakespeare’s celebrated play about the destructive power of jealousy.
National Theatre Live’s 2010 broadcast of Hamlet returns to cinemas as part of the National Theatre's 50th anniversary celebrations.
Othello, newly married to Desdemona, is appointed leader of a major military operation. Iago – passed over for promotion by Othello in favour of the young Cassio – persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. Olivier Award-winning actor Adrian Lester (‘Henry V’ at the National Theatre, BBC’s 'Hustle') takes the title role opposite Rory Kinnear (‘Skyfall’) as the duplicitous Iago.
Olivier Award-winning actor Rory Kinnear (see ‘Othello’ opposite) plays Hamlet in a dynamic new production of Shakespeare’s complex and profound play about the human condition. He is joined by Clare Higgins (Gertrude), Patrick Malahide (Claudius), David Calder (Polonius), James Laurenson (Ghost/Player King) and Ruth Negga (Ophelia).

National Theatre Live’s 2011 broadcast returns to cinemas as part of the NT’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
National Theatre Live’s 2010 broadcast with Richard Griffiths, Alex Jennings and Frances de la Tour, returns to cinemas as part of the NT’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (‘Trainspotting’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’) directed this sensational sell-out production in which Benedict Cumberbatch (‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’, BBC’s ‘Sherlock’) and Jonny Lee Miller (‘Trainspotting’, CBS’s ‘Elementary’) alternated the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creation. In this thrilling and deeply disturbing gothic tale the childlike but grotesque Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Increasingly desperate and vengeful, the friendless Creature, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. For this Halloween encore screening we present Benedict Cumberbatch as the Creature.
Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, ‘Death in Venice’, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W.H. Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station. Alan Bennett’s play looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent. Contains strong language and sexual references.

RSC Live: from Stratford-upon-Avon Richard II by William Shakespeare Richard is King, ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness… a man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role of this new production. Joining Tennant is Oliver Ford Davies as the Duke of York - both actors appeared in the RSC’s acclaimed ‘Hamlet’ (2008) - with Nigel Lindsay as Henry Bolingbroke and Michael Pennington as John of Gaunt.
Inspired by Lord Byron’s poem, Marius Petipa’s version of the ballet was part of the Bolshoi’s repertoire until the beginning of the 20th century. In 2007 Alexei Ratmansky and Yuri Burlaka presented a new choreographic version, which stands out as the most sumptuous of all. In the marketplace of Adrianople, the beautiful Medora is sold to Pasha by a slave dealer, but a pirate, hidden among the crowd with his companions, decides to ravish her. Thrilling suspense is at the core of this lavish exotic fable, an amazing production complete with pirates, kidnapping, a shipwreck, and a record 120 dancers on stage.
Dir. Gregory Doran
