Archaeologists, digging in areas near streams and springs of Franklin County, unearthed artifacts dating back 10,000 years to the Ice Age. These remnants were left by nomadic hunters, following herds of animals into Franklin County. Objects found include hunting items and tools. Centuries later Native American tribes would follow the same migratory paths and hunt the valleys of Franklin County. The Six Nations of the Iroquois, Shawnees, and the Lenni Lenape--also known as the Delaware, hunted game throughout Franklin County. Generations of Native Americans followed the same hunting paths of prehistoric nomads. In the 1700s, Franklin County was the frontier. Scots-Irish, German, and Welsh immigrants settled throughout Franklin County, establishing homesteads and hamlets in and around present-day Chambersburg, Greencastle, Mercersburg, Shippensburg, and Waynesboro. Seeking freedom and opportunity, these immigrants were drawn to the lands of Franklin County—reminiscent of their homelands and filled with the natural resources needed to build a prosperous, new life.
The Frontier Forts
CELTIC CROSS
From 1730 to 1755, settlements along the Franklin County frontier sprang up. The influx of settlers pushed the Native Americans westward. Many Native Americans did not understand land ownership in the same way as Europeans, believing that the land belonged to the Great Spirit that they worshipped. Angered by the

History Happened Here MARCH 9, 1765
James Smith, The Black Boys
& Colonial Rebellion at Fort Loudoun
Benjamin Chambers In 1734, Benjamin Chambers, a Scots-Irish immigrant and millwright by trade, licensed the purchase of 400 acres of land from William Penn and built the settlement of Chambersburg around the joining of two water bodies - the Falling Spring and Conococheague Creek. As the tensions of the French and Indian War grew and Native American attacks in the area accelerated, Chambers constructed a stockade to protect his dwelling and mills. Surrounded by water on three of its sides, Chambers Fort was 90-ft. wide and 300-ft. long and defended by swivel cannons and blunderbusses. Chambers recognized the influential role religion played in the community, so he set aside three plots of land for three congregations in Chambersburg—Falling Spring Presbyterian, First Lutheran, and Zion Reformed. In return for the land, Chambers requested that each congregation would pay a yearly rent of one rose to a descendant of the Chambers Family. Today, all three congregations continue the tradition of the rose rent.
James Smith had an amazing life. Captured in 1755 at age 18 by Caughnawaga Indians as he was building the Braddock Road, Smith was adopted to replace a fallen Indian warrior and was accepted as a member of the tribe. Smith learned the Native American lifestyle. When he escaped in 1759, he was well-versed in the ways of Native American warfare. Returning to life as a farmer on the frontier of Franklin County, Smith saw more and more guns, supplied by British traders, in the hands of the Indians. With the guns came more attacks. So, Smith outfitted 50 men with breechclouts, knives, and tomahawks; trained them in Indian warfare; blackened their faces and applied ample red war paint. James Smith and "the Black Boys" protected the Franklin County frontier from Indian attacks. All was well until British traders stepped up the trade of guns with the Native Americans. Smith and the Black Boys stopped the trader's pack train and compelled the traders to unload their goods. The goods were burned, and the traders horsewhipped. The irate traders appealed to the British at Fort Loudoun. In response, British Commander Grant imprisoned eight of the Black Boys. Smith gathered the rest of the Black Boys and demanded his captured men be released. Refused, Smith ordered an attack. During the siege, Smith captured sixteen British soldiers, resulting in a "prisoner exchange." When the British would not return the weapons of the eight Black Boys, Smith and his men resumed their attack of Fort Loudoun. Two days later, Commander Grant ran up a white flag and returned the weapons. The British vacated Fort Loudoun. Neal Swanson summed up best in his book The Last Rebel: "The date that would be carved on the monuments and printed in the histories and textbooks was April 19, 1775. On that day, Americans marched out to face British regulars across the village green in Lexington, Massachusetts. But, they would not be the first Americans to march out for that purpose. They would not be the first by ten years, one month, and eleven days. The day on which James Smith's 300 men marched down the muddy road to Fort Loudoun in Pennsylvania was March 9, 1775."

Birthplace of James Buchanan
Thompson's Rifle Batallion
In 1791, James Buchanan, who would become the fifteenth president of the United States, was born in a log cabin about 2.5 miles west of Mercersburg at Stony Batter, a trading post operated by Buchanan’s father. When Buchanan was five years old, the Buchanan family moved to Mercersburg. They lived on the main street and operated a general store in the building that is today the James Buchanan Pub & Restaurant. Across the street from the pub is the home of Harriet Lane, Buchanan’s niece, who served as the mistress of the White House during James Buchanan’s presidency. To commemorate her uncle, Harriet created a 600-ton, pyramid monument at Stony Batter where Buchanan was born. Today, it is the James Buchanan State Park.
In June 1775, as the American Revolution loomed, Franklin County men stepped forward to form a unit of the first battalion in the colonies authorized by Congress. The unit, led by Captain James Chambers, marched 450 miles to join the siege of Boston. The battalion became the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment, with Chambers as Colonel. Revolutionary War.
As the new president of the United States, George Washington faced the first test of the young nation’s power when farmers in western Pennsylvania, angered by the tax levied on grain alcohols, refused to pay the taxes and attacked tax collectors. The farmers used grain alcohol as a currency and the tax removed their profit. The federal government applied the tax dollars to the debt of the Revolutionary War. In July 1794, the whiskey tax issue came to a head when western PA farmers attacked a federal marshal, and President Washington called out the militia. The confrontation became known as the Whiskey Rebellion. On Washington's trip to squelch the rebellion, he spent the night at the Morrow Tavern, located on South Main Street of Chambersburg.

Underground Railroad Franklin County was “a hazardous area of 100 miles which contained the most secretive, tangled lines of the Underground Railroad.” --Charles Blockson Franklin County played an important role in the passage to freedom—the Underground Railroad. It's location on the Mason-Dixon Line signaled escaping slaves entry to the north, and the mountainous terrain afforded numerous hiding places in caves and wooded areas. By 1860, Franklin County had the fifth largest African-American population in the state.
MERCERSBURG Escape Routes The Mercersburg African-American population was the largest in Franklin County. Eight miles over the Mason-Dixon line, Mercersburg offered many escape routes that were former Native American pathways. Escaping slaves would follow the Warm Springs Indian Trail, which parallels today’s Route 75, into Mercersburg. From here, they traveled to Chambersburg to the safe houses along today’s Route 30, and then onto Shippensburg along present-day Route 11. From Shippensburg, escapees made their way to Carlisle, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York, and on to freedom in Canada. In the 1820s, African Americans began to settle along Fayette Street, Mercersburg, and the community grew. The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, believed to be part of the Underground Railroad, was located in this neighborhood, as is the Zion Union Cemetery.
John Brown House & Old Jail,
CHAMBERSBURG
It was no mistake that radical abolitionist John Brown chose Chambersburg as his northern supply base and staging area for his raid on Harpers Ferry. Chambersburg had excellent access to rail, was located in the north, but was still close enough to the southern staging area--the Kennedy Farm--for Brown to deploy his attack. In the summer of 1859, Brown and several of his associates stayed at 255 East King Street in Chambersburg, the boarding house of Mary Ritner. Brown assumed the identity of Isaac Smith, owner of a mining operation. Under this guise, Brown was able to receive the heavy shipments of weapons for his planned takeover of the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Located just a block west of the John Brown House is the Old Jail, where John Cook, one of John Brown’s men was held after being captured in Mont Alto.

The South Mountain Road toFreedom;
Rouzerville, Quincy, Caledonia & Beyond Franklin County offered a number of entry points as well as the natural protection of mountains, forests, and caves. The Jacob Shockey farm, near Rouzerville just across the Maryland line, was at the foot of the South Mountain range. The forest sheltered the fugitives by day, and under cover of darkness, Shockey would guide the group eight miles to the Hiram Wertz farm near Quincy. From the Wertz farm, the escapees traveled another eight miles to an AfricanAmerican community near Thaddeus Steven’s Caledonia Iron Works. Traveling today, the route would parallel Route 997. The community, sometimes called Africa, was the third largest African-American population in Franklin County in 1850.

African American Community Supports Underground Railroad in Chambersburg A historic marker on Memorial Square marks the Underground Railroad activity of Chambersburg. Many of Chambersburg’s African-American citizens participated in the Underground Railroad and the majority of the African-American population was concentrated in the South Ward. Henry Watson, a local barber, and Joseph Winters, an inventor and author, were two known agents of African-American heritage. In August, 1859, abolitionist Frederick Douglass visited Chambersburg. When he was recognized by the townspeople, he was pressed to give a speech. The speech was given in a building on the square called the Franklin Repository, since burned in the 1864 Civil War Burning of Chambersburg. The site is adjacent to the 1865 Franklin County courthouse that remains today. Douglass’ true purpose for traveling to Chambersburg was not a speaking engagement, but a meeting with John Brown, held in an old quarry that is behind the present-day Southgate Shopping Center. over five weeks later, on April 12, 1861, Confederate troops tested Lincoln’s words when they commenced the shelling of Fort Sumter. The fort was surrendered to Confederate troops on April 13, 1861. Word of the shelling of Fort Sumter reached Chambersburg by telegraph, and Franklin County would never be the same.
Lincoln met with Pennsylvania Senator Simon Cameron, General Winfield Scott, and Colonel Alexander K. McClure, a Chambersburg lawyer and newspaper editor, who was a key leader in the Pennsylvania Republican party. Lincoln requested their aid in securing 75,000 troops to defend the Union. By the end of April, Chambersburg was readying for a Maryland attack. Maryland, a border state, was a slave state yet did not secede from the Union. Fortunately, the attack did not materialize, but troops amassed in the Franklin County seat. By May 1, about 3,000 Union soldiers were camped in and around Chambersburg. By June 1, the number increased to 8,000. Within another week, the army encampment at Chambersburg swelled to 20,000. Chambersburg became a military staging ground.

Civil War Timeline Eve of War
From the start, Franklin County played a major role in the great conflict that we know as The American Civil War. The summer of 1859 proved to be a decisive period in both our county’s and country’s history. John Brown planned his raid on Harpers Ferry in Chambersburg. This raid proved to be the final spark that set off the tinder box of sectional strife and led to war. Just prior to his execution on December 2, 1859, John Brown made an ominous prediction.” I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land can never be purged away but with blood. I had, as I now think, vainly flattered myself that, without very much bloodshed, it might be done.” Eighteen months later Brown’s forecast of bloodshed came true. By April, 1861 the country was plunged into Civil War. Soon Chambersburg and Franklin County were caught up in the conflict.
1863
Confrontation & Retreat 1863 was a year of destiny for the nation and Franklin County. In mid June, more than 70,000 Confederate troops led by General Robert E. Lee entered Pennsylvania in what became known as the Gettysburg Campaign. There were about twenty military actions in Franklin County during the campaign, including the fateful one of June 22. A detachment of the 1st New York “Lincoln” Cavalry was drawn into an ambush at the Fleming Farm just north of Greencastle. A volley of Confederate musket fire felled two troopers. One, Sgt. Milton Cafferty was wounded in the leg but survived to serve until the end of the war. The other cavalryman, Corporal William Rihl was not so lucky. He became the first Union soldier killed on Pennsylvania soil during the war. Lee himself camped east of Chambersburg and made the decision to move east to Cashtown Pass. What resulted was the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1 – 3, 1863, the largest and bloodiest battle in the history of the U.S. Next to Gettysburg, the second largest military action on Pennsylvania soil took place in Franklin County--the Battle of Monterey Pass, fought July 4 and 5, 1863 in the mountains east of Waynesboro during the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg. Around 4,500 Union cavalry under General Judson Kilpatrick, struck on Lee’s wagon trains in a battle that lasted all night in the midst of a driving thunderstorm. General George Custer led his famous Michigan brigade in the battle, and Major Charles Capehart of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading a cavalry charge. As many as 10,000 soldiers were involved in the battle. More than forty Union soldiers were casualties and Confederate losses exceed 1,000--most taken prisoner. The Gettysburg Campaign left the farms and businesses of Franklin County in shambles. The streets and roads of towns and surrounding townships were in horrible shape, filled with the debris of war. Yet, the worst visitation by the Confederates was yet to come.
1861-1862 War Begins
Union troops poured into the area. By early June nearly 20,000 soldiers were camped in and around Chambersburg—to date, one of the largest armies raised in the U.S. Events in 1862 brought the war much closer to Franklin County. In September, General Robert E. Lee led part of his army to Hagerstown, less than ten miles from the county line. Accounts suggest that Rebel cavalry may have actually entered Franklin County as they scouted the area. Panic gripped the border as thousands of refugees, black and white, fled north in the face of the Rebel threat. Farmers from Maryland passed through the streets of Greencastle and Chambersburg with scores of livestock, lest they be confiscated by Lee’s men. Following the blood bath of Antietam on September 17, 1862, where more than 23,000 men were casualties, the entire forty mile radius around Antietam has been described as “one vast hospital.” More than 400 wounded soldiers were brought to Chambersburg for care. The King Street School and Corpus Christi Catholic Church served as hospitals. After Antietam, Lee decided to send his cavalry chief, General J.E.B. Stuart on a raid into Franklin County. His mission was to take civilian hostages, in retaliation for Union hostage taking in Virginia; gather as much livestock, particularly horses for the armies use; and disrupt the Cumberland Valley railroad, a key supply link for General George B. McClellan’s Union army at Sharpsburg. Stuart entered the county on October 10, 1862. His force of some 1800 horsemen struck first at Mercersburg, taking seven civilians hostage. One, local attorney Perry Rice, later died in captivity at Richmond’s infamous Libby Prison. That night Stuart and his horsemen entered Chambersburg and placed the town under martial law while enemy details searched for military stores and horses. A detachment was sent to destroy the railroad bridge over Conococheague Creek at Scotland but failed when locals convinced the Confederates that the bridge was made of stone and could not be burned. Before dawn on October 11, Stuart’s men looted warehouses filled with uniforms and other military gear and burned the depot and shops of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. Finally, Stuart led his command out of town eastward to Cashtown and safely back across the Potomac to Virginia. The national publicity generated by Stuart’s Chambersburg raid was an embarrassment to the Lincoln Administration and was a key reason Lincoln relieved Union General George B. McClellan of command.
1864
The Final Devastation On July 30, 1864--a 2,800-man cavalry force commanded by Confederate General John McCausland came to Chambersburg. The mission was to levy a ransom on the town. $100,000 in gold or $500,000 in greenbacks. If the ransom was not met, Chambersburg was to be burned. The Burning of Chambersburg had its roots in destruction of private property by Federal troops in the Shenandoah Valley. As a result, Confederate general Jubal A. Early ordered McCausland to mount this destructive raid. Unable to meet the ransom demand, the town was torched on the morning of July 30. In the process, many of the Confederates got drunk and ran amuck throughout Chambersburg looting businesses and private homes. During the orgy of looting, at least three intoxicated Confederates got separated and were set upon by angry citizens and killed. More than 500 structures, the entire inner core of Chambersburg was destroyed. Its destruction caused a shift in Union strategy in the region. Now, the Union high command made sure that there was an improved cavalry presence along the border. The sacrifices of the county were also made by the men who went off to fight in the war. Around 5,000 area men served in more than twenty-five Union units and rest near battlefields of the South. Excerpted from “Franklin County and the Civil War” by Ted Alexander, Chief Historian at Antietam Battlefield and Franklin County historian.

Let It Snow…Let It Snow…
Let it Snow!
Great skiing is waiting at Whitetail Ski Resort in Mercersburg. Skiers can enjoy twenty-one trails and snowboarders can challenge themselves at the two terrain parks. Whether you’re a beginner or someone more advanced, Whitetail offers enjoyment for everyone. Looking for a different way to celebrate a birthday? Try a Whitetail skiing, tubing, or snowboarding party. Just a 90-minute drive from the DC area, it makes a great weekend getaway. When snow falls six to eight inches, the cross-country skiers take to the meadow and hiking trails of Caledonia State Park to enjoy the serene beauty of the season. Adjoining Caledonia in Michaux State Forest is the Smoke Zimmerman Trail, a four mile cross-country ski trail. Snowmobilers also take to the trails of Michaux Forest. An emailable map is available from the Franklin County Visitors Bureau to show the cross-country skiing trail and the snowmobile trails. Nearby Mont Alto State Park is also a favorite with snowmobilers because it offers easy parking and unloading. The beautiful lake at Cowans Gap comes to life with skaters and ice fisherman in winter. The area of lake that adjoins the beach is monitored for ice-skating. The balance of the lake is open for ice fishermen, but it is not monitored. For safety, be sure the ice is at least 4 inches. Next time the forecast is snow, head to Franklin County and enjoy the weather!
On A Whim
Franklin County is simply beautiful in every season. In summer, the contrast of the green and golden fields with the azure skies is breathtaking. Be spontaneous, pack a picnic lunch, and visit one of Franklin County's many parks. Nothing says summer more than picnicking and wading in the creek! Norlo Park, located along the historic Lincoln Highway, is 143-acres of family fun--3 miles of paved hiking trails, 2 picnic shelters with grills, a playground, softball fields, soccer fields, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and a dog park. The park also displays two cabooses, a flat car, and a wooden tank car, and volunteers of the Cumberland Valley Railway Historical Society give visitors--both young and old, a chance to ride a working train. Norlo Park offers a little history, too. The park is built on the former Norlo Farm. The 1885 brick farmhouse and 1881 brick-end barn, originally owned by Isaac and Susan Sollenberger, is renovated to period-correct detail. Antrim Township Park, on Grant Shook Road in Greencastle, has four miles of hiking trails from a flat trail that is handicap accessible to a steep trail for seasoned hikers. Visitors will enjoy the gazebo, picnic areas, and the Whispering Falls Disc Court. Built similar to a regular golf course with 18 holes, tee areas, and fairways, the course lets players throw a Frisbee into a basket to sink the putt. A dog park is also included. Pine Hill Recreation Park on Mentzer Gap Road in Waynesboro offers beautiful year-round views, but autumn is particularly vibrant. The park has three picnic pavilions and more than three miles of hiking and mountain bike trails plus a large skate park.

Gone Fishin’ The cool, clear limestone
WATERS OF FRANKLIN COUNTY
a trout fishing delight.
GREAT FISHIN’ SPOTS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. The 1.1-mile section of the Falling Spring from Walker Road downstream to Fifth Avenue offers excellent fishing, particularly in autumn. Fishermen may only use artificial lures and can only keep fish from mid-June through Labor Day. Another excellent source of rainbow and brown trout is the East Branch of Antietam Creek, near Waynesboro. The stocked fishing area begins at the Route 16 bridge and continues downstream for one mile to Welty Road. It is a catch and release fishing spot. Conococheague Creek in Caledonia State Park, Fayetteville, just off Route 30, is a popular family-fishing spot because it is heavily stocked with brook trout. For boat fishermen, Letterkenny Reservoir, off Route 641 near Roxbury, is stocked with rainbow trout. The West Branch of Antietam Creek flows through Mont Alto State Park, along Route 997. It is another good trout fishing stream. Some of the best “fishing waters” of Franklin County are on private property, so it is important for fishermen to remember the generosity of landowners and respect the property as if it were their own. Fishermen, private landowners, and local organizations such as the Falling Spring Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Falling Spring Greenway are working together to preserve the area’s natural resources and enjoy the fishing for years to come.
Although Franklin County is known for its trout, you’ll also catch bass and pickerel. Check the table on the adjacent page and consider contacting a guide or guide service for your next fishing trip to Franklin County. Antietam Outfitters www.antietamoutfitters.net 717-360-5699 or 717-860-0196

Take a hike...
a Family Hike
For a family hike, picking up part of the Appalachian Trail in Franklin County is picturesque and educational. The AT actually passes through the open field where the playground equipment is at Caledonia State Park and is near the Ramble Trail, which is a circular trail. It is a pretty walk with good views of rhododendron and hemlocks. This hike gives a sense of the history of the location. Once Caledonia State Park was the Ironworks of Thaddeus Stevens and part of the hike follows the millrace of the old furnace. It is about a 3-mile loop and dogs are allowed on a leash. The AT is blazed white, and the Ramble Trail is blazed yellow.
Appalachian Trail
in Franklin County
At approximately 2,185 miles, the Appalachian Trail is the longest, hike-only trail in the U.S. It traverses about 20 miles in Franklin County, and in April 2014, the relationship between Franklin County and the AT got a little closer when the greater Waynesboro area officially was named an Appalachian Trail Community. For decades, AT hikers have exited the trail and visited Waynesboro and neighboring Rouzerville in Washington Township for supplies, hot food, a warm shower, and a cozy bed. The AT designation just formalizes and raises awareness of the Waynesboro area as a hikerfriendly stop along the AT.

Great Outdoors Are Waiting at Cowan’s Gap C
owans Gap is a wind gap through the Tuscarora Mountains in Buchanan State Forest. A wind gap is the valley where a stream once flowed. Usually, the stream is taken over by another stream that flows in the direction of the ridge-and-valley grain. The remaining space is now dry and provides good hiking. Miles and miles of hiking, biking, and backpacking are waiting in Franklin County’s four state parks, two state forests, the Appalachian Trail, and the Tuscarora Trail.
Tuscarora Trail Hike
The Tuscarora Trail at Cowan’s Gap State Park offers an adaptable moderate to difficult hike. Tuscarora Trail is a spur trail to the Appalachian Trail. A popular section to explore at Cowan’s Gap is a 1.5-mile segment beginning across Aughwick Road from Parking Lot #3 of the park. The Tuscarora Trail climbs along Tuscarora Mountain and junctions with Geyer Trail. If you want to return to the day use area of Cowan’s Gap, you can retrace your walk. From Geyer Trail, if you are a relatively experienced hiker with good skills, you can pick up Cameron Trail and make a steep climb to Cove Mountain. Taking Plessinger Trail will take you along Aughwick Creek--a good opportunity to see wildlife or even catch a few fish. Or, simply head south on Tuscarora Trail for another 2.4 miles to end up on the top of Big Mountain, which overlooks the Path Valley area of Franklin County. Hiking on this trail gives a good opportunity to see rock outcroppings and rock fields. The return hike is about four miles.

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail The C.V. Rail Trail is approximately a ten-mile trail that connects Shippesnburg to Newville. The trail is the old rail line of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. Walkers, bikers, joggers, and horseback riders are invited to access the trail at Shippensburg Township Park at Britton Road and travel the entire route to McFarland Street in Newville. (No motorized vehicles are permitted.)
Forbes Road Trail for Backpackers During the French and Indian War, General John Forbes led a British expedition to build a road from Carlisle, PA, to Pittsburgh, where the French were headquartered. The road is the Forbes Road. Backpackers along the Forbes Road Trail are retracing the footsteps of history along the trail. The Forbes Road Trail runs through Cowan’s Gap State Park. Backpackers can pick up the trail and head toward Carlisle or Pittsburgh from this entry point. The trail is not suitable for park visitors to hike and should be explored by backpackers with appropriate preparation and mapping. 20 │Great moments are waiting.│www.ExploreFranklinCountyPA.com

The Orchards Always A Good Fit
No matter the mood, The Orchards has a setting to fit the feeling. Wind down, lighten up, and meet friends in a casual, spontaneous environment at Relax Lounge & Patio, located on the east side of the restaurant. When, the weather is nice, outdoor dining on the patio is popular. The Relax menu has appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and daily specials. The toasted cheese and tomato bisque is a tried and true favorite! The Civil War Lounge at The Orchards is another dining experience, offering an extended tapas menu as well as a variety of entrees. The atmosphere is casual and cozy. Fridays, from 6 PM to 9 PM, the Civil War Lounge has live entertainment, often local jazz and acoustic. The lounge displays a series of Civil War oil paintings and replica artifacts to commemorate the Civil War history of the area. The menu at The Orchards offers a selection of seafood, angus beef, and pasta. Every Thursday is Greek Night. Enjoy spanikopita, a Greek salad, feta and olives, and souvlaki. The Orchards is always a good fit, and eating at The Orchards is an experience to repeat again and again.
DestinationDining In 1810, it was McKinstry House. Today, it is Flannery's Tavern On The Square, in the center of Mercersburg's historic district. Approaching the building, the beautiful stone exterior is reminiscent of colonial Williamsburg. Open the door and you are in the tavern or bar area where locals or skiers from nearby Whitetail gather for a quick bite, a good beer, or the camaraderie of sharing the televised sports. It's a cool juxtapose of centuries. Stepping out of the bar area and into the dining room makes this a completely different experience. Surrounded by stone walls and the period fireplace, it is easy to get the feeling of the 1810 historic home of town leader William McKinstry. There is a menu for the tavern and the dining room. The tavern offers a variety of burgers and sandwiches with freshly-cut fries. The dining room menu has great entrées, like prime rib, chicken Marsala, brandy-glazed salmon, and crabcakes. Flannery's is a timeless classic, mixing the flavor of today and yesterday, and serving up great food and atmosphere!
Byron's Dining, housed in the beautiful Mercersburg Inn, is another destination dining experience in Mercersburg. The 20,000-sq. ft., brick Colonial Revival mansion was built in 1910, by Harry Byron, whose family amassed its wealth in the tanning industry. The mansion, originally named Prospect, is an elegant home with lovely oak, mahogany and chestnut woods, scagliola columns, and a double-curving staircase. The warmth of the wood and the windows make it a cozy place to dine. Byron's executive chef is classically trained, creative, and takes pride in creating each meal as it is ordered. Byron's has a nice wine list, and the menu rotates, regularly bringing new items to incorporate fresh, locally grown foods. Open Thursday through Sunday, Bryon's Dining is a special indulgence, certain to please the eye and the palate.
THE BEER STUBE AT ROY PITZ BREWING COMPANY Above the brewery, where Roy Pitz works its magic and creates "liquid art," is The Beer Stube. The Stube is a pleasant place to pull up a chair, grab a light bite, and one of Roy Pitz's year-round brews--Ludwig's Revenge, Best Blonde, Old Jail Ale, and Daddy Fat Sacks or a seasonal variety--Truly Honest Amber Ale, Watermelon Lager, Lay Down Stay Down, and Gobbler Lager. The names of Roy Pitz beers are great, and be sure the beer is, also. The Beer Stube pairs live music with a light menu of nachos, sliders, sandwiches, pizzas, soups, and salads. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays are good days to catch live entertainment--lots of great regional and local acoustic.

Family Favorites
IN FRANKLIN COUNTY
Home-style cooking and family dining is a staple of Franklin County. Whether it's the food from grandma's kitchen or good, old-fashioned comfort food, Franklin County has plenty of places to bring the family together.
Rachel's Home-Style Meals & Catering is traditional Pennsylvaniacooking at its best. Rachel's food is like home at the end of a busy day. It is welcoming, relaxing, and satisfying. Nothing replaces the "well-taken care of" feeling of a home-cooked meal by someone who loves to cook. From the smoky flavor of an old-fashioned ham and freshly cooked and mashed potatoes to canned-from-the-garden chow chow, the only thing better is the shoo-fly pie that is waiting for dessert. Mrs. Gibble's Restaurant is another way to bring back childhood memories of dinner or supper. It is family-style dining. Family-style is just like it sounds, where everyone sits together around the table. It is easy to get another serving...just say, "Please pass the mashed potatoes." Mrs. Gibble's is known for corn fritters; they're endless, so enjoy. Another favorite at Mrs. Gibble's is ham loaf, a Pennsylvania favorite. Lots of good home cookin' and plenty of fellowship is waiting at Mrs. Gibble's Restaurant. Looking for simply good food at a good value, then Johnnies Family Restaurant in Chambersburg and Path Valley Restaurant in Spring Run are two of the best. Johnnies serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is just good food, the service is friendly, and the check fits a budget. Owners John, Helen, and their family take pride in wholesome, fresh food and work hard to make their customers happy. For a nice surprise, try one of Johnnie's salads! The Path Valley Restaurant is located in the small community of Spring Run at the crossroads of Route 641 and Route 75. It is a local favorite and locals know! Those travelers, who detoured from the Turnpike, are sure glad they did, also. Lots of open-face sandwiches, chicken and waffles, and homemade favorites!

Burgers, Fries & Ice Cream Treat yourself! Turn back time and try a "snack shack." During the fifties, every town had snack shacks and drive-ins. It was the cool place to hang out and grab a milkshake or a float, burger and fries, or a shrimp basket. Franklin County has some original and retro-style spots that inspire thoughts of poodle skirts, bobby socks, and letter sweaters. A few of these treasured stops in Franklin County are Twin Kiss, Milky Way, Waynesburger, C.R. Bucks, Kenny's and The Iglo. Go retro and treat yourself...get jimmies on your cone!

Steeples, Spires & Stained Glass Franklin County was settled in the mid 1730s, and churches were a priority for the ScotsIrish and German immigrants that settled this frontier region. Today, the importance
Falling Spring Presbyterian Church.. is a beautiful stone structure in downtown Chambersburg. Town founder Benjamin Chambers gave the land for the church in 1768. It is a lovely stone chapel with Tiffany Stained Glass windows. Falling Spring is one of Chambersburg's Rose Rent Churches. These are the churches that Benjamin Chambers gave land and all he expected in return was a "yearly rental" of one rose, paid to him or his descendants. The tradition continues today. Be sure to see the Honey Locust tree in front of the church, reportedly the oldest tree of this species in Pennsylvania.
of churches continues, and Franklin County is fortunate to have many beautiful church edifices with elegant steeple, spires, and stained glass.
Wilson College - Lenfest Commons... displays a beautiful Tiffany Stained Glass Window called the Instruction of Hypatia. Commissioner in 1897, the window hung until the middle of the 20th century and was placed in storage. After 50 years, it was restored in 2005 and is proudly displayed for all to appreciate.
Mercersburg Academy Chapel... bears a replica of the spire of St. Mary the Virgin at Oxford, England. Noted architect Ralph Adams Cram designed the chapel in Gothic Revival style. It houses a large pipe organ and a traditional bell carillon in its tower. Originally built with 43 bronze bells in 1928, the bells now total 50 with addition of six bells in 1996 and one in 2008. The original bells contain bits of historic metal collected worldwide by alumni and friends of the school, including copper coins, metal from Old Ironsides, pieces of artillery shells gathered from the fields of France in World War I, a shaving from the Liberty Bell, and small pieces from the Admiral Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar. Yearly Easter and Christmas Chorus events are held in the Chapel and are open to the public.

Central Presbyterian Church... is prominently located on the square of Chambersburg. Its congregation divided from Falling Spring Presbyterian and was seeking a site for the church when the Civil War began. Because of the 1864 burning of Chambersburg, the Franklin Hotel on the square of Chambersburg was destroyed. The site became the location of Central Presbyterian Congregation, and the church was built in 1868. Its impressive spire is 186-feet tall. Folklore says that Sarah Wilson, a devote Presbyterian who also gave money to help establish nearby Wilson College, donated the funds to build the spire with the intention of making it the highest point of note in Chambersburg. Central has twelve Tiffany Stained Glass windows, placed between 1903 and 1905.
The Chapel at Letterkenny... was constructed by Italian prisoners of World War II, using the materials from homes and farms razed to build the Letterkenny Army Depot. Today, the site begins the Franklin County Military Trail of History at the Franklin County Veterans Park. The Franklin County Military Trail of History includes two 9-11 Memorials
Robert Kennedy Memorial Presbyterian Church ... was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. It was built in 1871 in the small village of Welsh Run. The Italianate-style structure is located at PA 416 and PA 995. It has a gable roof with a bell tower in the center and features a 1934 Tiffany Stained Glass Window. The pastoral setting of this lovely whitewashed church gives a sense of the Franklin County land frontiersman laid eyes on in 1741, when Welsh settlers first founded this church congregation.
Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church... was built to serve the spiritual needs of families that built summer homes on the mountain at Blue Ridge Summit. The church has a style all its own and is built from the wood and stone of the mountainside. It is believed to be inspired by a church in Czechoslovakia. Nonetheless, its style is welcoming, seeming to merge the appearance of a home and a church. The church has a tradition of caring and sharing and is named "The Hug-In Church" because parishioners share the custom of a hug.

Smoked cheddar, goat's milk gouda, Italian seasoned, longhorn, havarti, dill and bacon, and sharp cheddar are just a few. It is good food, and it is Franklin County fresh.
