Going to the Chapel... Historic Churches Across Franklin County Franklin County has many historic and beautiful churches with centuries of history behind them. With beautiful stained glass windows, classic architecture and beautiful scenic views, these breathtaking and beautiful buildings can add the charm and elegance of tradition to anyone’s special day.
The Presbyterian Church Of Falling Spring This historic church was founded when the land was granted by Chambersburg town founder Benjamin Chambers. In return, he asked a rose be given to his descendents every year as rent and the tradition continues with the eighth generation descendents. This church, located at Falling Spring Creek, is a beautiful church for a traditional ceremony.
Central Presbyterian Church Located in the downtown square of Chambersburg, Central Presbyterian Church was built in 1868. The church has a 186-foot spire tower created with the help of Miss Sarah Wilson, one of the founders of Wilson College. The church has two Tiffany stained glass windows that have been repaired and restored after a massive fire in the mid 1930’s.
Emmanuel Chapel Emmanuel Chapel, located on Penn State’s Mont Alto campus, was built in 1854, erected to serve workers at an iron-making operation on the land. This campus was believed to have been the worship site of wellknown abolitionist John Brown. This picturesque chapel is a great place for weddings.
Presbyterian Church of the Upper West Conococheague This limestone church was built in 1794. The church was originally disbanded because of disturbances by Indians and established Sunday school in 1816 and a prayer meeting in 1818. This church is built in a Romanesque Revival style and is a beautiful location for a wedding.

Classic Style: Barn Weddings
Local Bride Spotlight
The Bumbaugh’s
More marriages are taking place with more rustic and vintage styles! Many brides are also doing more to create the decorations themselves or to repurpose other things to create a unique event. Several area farms have opened their doors for a farm style wedding including Spring House Farm, DuCar Farms & Norlo Park. Spring House Farm, located in Spring Run, is a perfect place for weddings and other private events in a serene and secluded location. The renovated house, barn and outside pavilion, are perfect for indoor and outdoor ceremonies, receptions and other events. Included with rental of the property are indoor heaters, patio heaters and barrel fans for all kinds of ceremonies and events. Norlo Park Barn is situated on 143 acres and is in a Cumberland Valley Bank Barn. The barn accomodates 150 guest and has a commercial kitchen. The barn is located on a 1880’s farmstead that now includes a recreational area with walking trails, pavilions and a relocated rail station. DuCar Farm is located on over 20 acres of farmland in one of the oldest homes in Franklin County. The homestead was built in 1767 and includes the original limestone farmhouse, farmland and to accomodate more modern brides, a renovated barn and bridal suite with central air. This allows for the feel of a rustic wedding but with those modern touches.
Kayla and her husband chose a barn wedding after the events of Hurricane Matthew made them reconsider an outdoor wedding. “I would definitely encourage the brides to find a location where you can have your ceremony inside or outside,” she said, adding that it can cause confusion for guests if the weather is inclement. She said the ceremony itself was in the barn but the reception was at the Fayetteville Fire Community building. “I had made the decision early to not go overboard with ceremony decorations since my guests wouldn’t be there that long,” she said. “So I kept it real simple and made the decorations for both outdoor and indoor and that is something I would recommend for future brides.” Her dress was from J&B Bridals, rehearsal dinner at Main Street Deli, R&S Entertainment, Joy Jarjour Photography, hair and makeup at Hair Roots in Marion, transportation by Forrester’s.

Country Creek Farmhouse Tables It all started with Jennifer Barnhart’s own wedding and the want for farm tables in September of 2015. “Well, we made the farm tables for our own wedding,” said Barnhart, “I really wanted one and my husband helped by saying, we can definitely make these and helped by putting them together.” These one-of-a-kind stained, finished and constructed tables were the beginning of Country Creek Farmhouse Tables. Barnhart, owner of the rustic rental company, said after the wedding, they had these beautiful furniture pieces and thought they could rent them out for future weddings. Originally starting with 18 items for rental, it has now grown to three times that amount with over 60 weddings in 2016. “I never knew that it would evolve like this,” Barnhart said. “We have become a resource for local brides.” The company is most known for the handcrafted farm tables, but also has a wide range of other items for rent for a rustic style wedding, including folding chairs, plastic and wooden round tables, flatware, glassware, plates, string lighting, outdoor accessories such as a portable dance floor, propane gas grills, heater, wooden hangers, whiskey barrels, cake holders and more. The addition of chairs came after a look at the lack of area options. “We noticed there was a lack of chair choices for rentals,” she said. “So we added some new styles.” One of their most popular is the chiavari chairs. Also known as the Tiffany chair, this elegant style chair is a big hit, Jennifer said. “Brides want that quintessential rustic look with that stylish look to go with the farm tables,” she said. Each of their rental items includes the set-up and tear-down of all items and they work with brides within a 200 mile average radius. These have included events in New Jersey, Baltimore, West Virginia and everywhere in between. “We have even set-up at a wedding in Philadelphia where we were told the singer Sia was in attendance,” Jennifer said. In their two years of operating, Jennifer said she continues to strive for affordability. “When I was searching for wedding pieces, I was blown away at how expensive everything was and I have tried to keep the prices at an affordable rate,” she said. Kelly & Zach Peck Kelly & Zach decided on a wedding at the Saunderosa Campground in Mercersburg surrounded by close friends and family. “We were married under the pavilion,” she said. “It sat over the creek and the sounds of water made everything very relaxing.” Kelly was proposed to with a maroon lily, her favorite. So her best friend, who made her bouquet, incorporated it into her special day by adding centerpieces. Family and friends made homemade camping food such as hamburgers, baked beans and macaroni and cheese. They had a wedding cake and cupcakes for their guests made locally and used Koontz Entertainment for their DJ. “With the hurricane making its way up the coast, we were a little concerned about the weather, but it turned out to be a very nice and sunny day with a little breeze.”

Allison-Antrim Museum is a heritage site that interprets Scots-Irish history and maintains a variety of exhibits, from rock and roll to baseball, the Civil War and Underground Railroad, and a collection of artifacts from the oldest, continuously operating drug store in the United StatesCarl’s Drug, which is still going strong. Kids will love Funcastle, 3054 Buchanan Trail East, with go-carts, mini-golf, batting cages, arcade and more. To visit Mercersburg is to step back in time. As the boyhood home of fifteenth president James Buchanan, Mercersburg offers rich colonial, Underground Railroad, and Civil War
history. Settled by James Black, a Scots-Irish immigrant, in 1730, the town was originally called Black’s Town. Take the historic walking tour of downtown, enjoy the wonderful early American architecture, and listen for the lovely 50-bell carillon of the Mercersburg Academy Chapel. Long Acres Alpaca Farm is a heavenly spot and home to award-winning huacaya alpacas. The views are amazing, and the alpaca are so sweet. While in Mercersburg, visit the outstanding Moon Dog Pottery shop just outside of town. Check the PA Opry’s schedule to see if you can catch a Branson-Style variety show at The Star Theatre. Shippensburg is another lovely town, settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the 1730s. Shared by Franklin County and Cumberland County, and named in Norman Crampton’s book, 100 Best Small Towns in America, Shippensburg is well-known as a college town. Throughout all seasons and year after year, beautiful Old Main stands as a hallmark of the University and the town of Shippensburg. In the mood for a hike, step onto the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail at Shippensburg Township Park, 304 Britton Road, The trail travels 11 miles to Newville. Walk as much or as little as you want. Enjoy walking, jogging, biking, horeseback riding, and non-motorized uses. Be sure to see Rachel’s Country Store as featured on National Geographic’s show for a marvelous selection of Old Order Amish goods. The whole family will like Tiny World, a miniature display of a town, complete with a town hall, fire station, and school. It is viewable year-round but amazing to see lit from Thanksgiving to New Years. A fine-looking old factory town, Waynesboro’s prosperity grew as industry developed. Laid out by John Wallace in 1797, the town was first called Mount Vernon, then Wallacetown, Waynesburg, Waynesborough, and finally Waynesboro in 1831. Part of the unique beauty of Waynesboro is in the difference of the palaFranklin County Wedding & Event Planner│ 31
tial, Victorian-era homes and the simple houses of the working-class people. The 1881 borough hall on Main Street shows the practicality of its residents. Before housing local government, the structure was a fire company, a farmer’s market, and an opera house. A side trip to the Renfrew Museum & Barn will make your day. You can stroll through the 1800s farmstead at your leisure or tour the famhouse. Property is more than 100-acres, offers a picnic and play area, a four square garden, and largest collection of John Bell pottery. Waynesboro is also known for its Destination ARTS! initiative. Store after store of local, regional and national art on-display in downtown. In addition to the five main communities, Franklin County has some special places with identities all their own. Places like Fayetteville, Orrstown, Path Valley, Fannettsburg, and Fort Loudon. If you are someone that just likes to see where the road leads, try visiting one of Franklin County’s townsaround the bend. Fayetteville is home to one of the country’s longest and most successful summer theatres-Totem Pole Playhouse. Just across the road is Caledonia State Park with swimming pool, hiking trails, picnicking, and pure relaxation. Stop too, if time allows, at the four buildings of the 32 │GREAT MOMENTS
