John Brown House & Old Jail in Chambersburg It was no mistake that radical abolitionist John Brown chose Chambersburg as his supply base and staging area for his raid on Harpers Ferry. Chambersburg had excellent access to rail, was located in the north but was still close enough to the south for Brown to deploy his attack. In the summer of 1859, Brown and several associates stayed at 225 East King Street in Chambersburg, the boarding house of Mary Ritner. Today, the property is a National Park Service Network to Freedom site. Located just a block west of the John Brown House is the Old Jail at 175 East King Street. This is where John Cook, one of Brown’s raiders was detained after being captured near Mont Alto PA. Oral tradition also identifies the jail was used to secure escaping slaves until they could be moved to the next place of safety. When the Old Jail closed in 1971, it was the oldest continuously operating Jail in PA. Today, the Old Jail is a museum and home to the Franklin County Historical Society.
Welcome to the Chambersburg Heritage Center Each year, thousands of visitors from North America, Europe, and Asia are welcomed by an 8-ft., gold-leafed statue of Benjamin Franklin at the Chambersburg Heritage Center. Benjamin Franklin, the county’s namesake, is just one of the key Bens the Chambersburg Heritage Center highlights. The other is Benjamin Chambers, who settled Chambersburg, the county seat, in 1730. The Chambersburg Heritage Center showcases the history of Chambersburg and Franklin County PA. Located on the southeast portion of Memorial Square, the Heritage Center is in the midst of the history it interprets. Chambersburg’s Memorial Square is the intersection of U.S. 11 and 30, two of the oldest routes in America. From its earliest days, Chambersburg was a focal point of transportation and travel routes. Along with transportation history, the Chambersburg Heritage Center provides a historical overview of Franklin County, focusing on frontier, Underground Railroad, and Civil War history as well as the county’s diverse and inspiring architecture. Visitors learn how Franklin County’s proximity to the Mason-Dixon Line helped to provide a safe haven for freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. The same proximity brought multiple Civil War raids and invasions, including a 75,000-Confederate encampment in the weeks leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg. Yet, the most devastating invasion took place in 1864 with the Burning of Chambersburg, which resulted in more than $1.5 million in loss. The Heritage Center offers a play area for children equipped with an old schoolroom style blackboard and a map of the town. The play area also includes frontier and Civil War costumes so children can re-create their own history! Hanging above the movie area is a life-sized replica of a Rex Smith biplane, the first airplane to fly across the county. The deeper visitors dive into the Chambersburg Heritage Center, the more they will learn. The Heritage Center, which is housed in a 1915 bank, retained the vault. Today, it holds the names and stories of prominent people of Franklin Country, including Benjamin Chambers, James Buchanan, Sarah Wilson, and Nellie Fox. Chambersburg Heritage Center is open from 8am-5pm on Monday-Friday and from 10am to 3pm on Saturdays. Chambersburg Heritage Center is closed on Sundays.

Shippensburg had slaves even before the American Revolution. They were brought here by the ScotsIrish immigrants. In the 1780s, Pennsylvania’s Gradual Emancipation Law called for an accounting of slaves. At that time, the Shippensburg area had 47 slaves. With blacks in the area, this necessitated a black burial ground. James Burd included in his 1749 survey of Shippensburg a plot designated as “Negro Graveyard.” Forty-four colored veterans are buried here from the Civil War to the war in Vietnam.

Franklin County Formed 1784 The first settlers of Franklin County came in the 1730s. The good land, timber, water, and plentiful wildlife meant a better life for Scots-Irish, German, and Welsh immigrants. A steady flow of settlers came over the next 50 years. On September 9, 1784, the PA legislature formed Franklin County, naming it for Benjamin Franklin, and establishing the county seat as Chambers Town, which eventually became Chambersburg.

Renfrew Museum and Park is a lovely piece of the past, tucked behind the hustle and bustle of Waynesboro’s Main Street. Built and owned in the early 1800s by the Pennsylvania German Royer family, the Renfrew Museum gives visitors a glimpse of the past and a present-day appreciation of natural beauty. Renfrew Museum and Park officially opened to the public in 1975 after it was given to the borough of Waynesboro by its last private owners, the Nicodemus family. The 107-acre park contains the original structure of the house built by the Royer family, a milk house, smokehouse, limestone kiln, and summer kitchen as well as the Fahnestock house and barn. Inside the museum house are several artifacts showing daily life in the 1800s. The museum displays a kitchen, front and back parlor, and three bedrooms. Various Jacob Wolf clocks are on display throughout the museum. The second floor also has a changing exhibit, such as artifacts from the nearby Snow Hill Cloister or an exhibit of women’s history. Every visit to Renfrew should begin at the Visitors Center. Pick up a walking trail brochure of sites and descriptions; check out more than 150 pieces of 19th century John Bell pottery; or select from a variety of locally authored books, locally-made pottery for purchase, plus local prints and notecards. Renfrew is open mid-April to late October on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 1 PM to 4 PM with extended hours for special events and tours throughout the year.
Enjoy a History Lesson at Allison-Antrim Museum Located within the borough of Greencastle, the historic Allison-Antrim Museum highlights the history of Greencastle and Antrim township. The museum house was the home of Alexander L. Irwin. Built in 1860, the home was originally surrounded by orchard land and wheat fields. It was converted to a house museum in 1999. Nearly all the items at the Allison-Antrim Museum are loaned or donated to the museum. In addition to the house museum, the site has a reconstructed German bank barn, which is used for storage, museum archives, and acts as an exhibit itself. The lower level of the barn contains storage for museum collections. The upper level of the barn has a central meeting space, which may be rented and is used for special events. Adjoining the center bay is a permanent Civil War exhibit, a small library, and a bay with changing exhibits. Exhibits showcase a variety of traditional and non-traditional items, such as vinyl record collections, Elvis memorabilia, student recollections of September 11, a ladies’ handkerchief collection, and the lifetime photographic works of a Getty sports photographer. The museum is open noon to 4 PM, Tuesday through Friday, and 11 AM to 1 PM on Saturdays. Admission is free. Allison-Antrim also provides an online archive of exhibits at www.greencastlemuseum.org.
Monterey Pass Battlefield Museum
The mission of the Monterey Pass Battlefield Museum is to interpret and exhibit artifacts related to the battle of Monterey Pass, the Pennsylvania Campaign of 1863, and the American Civil War as it related to Franklin County. The Battle of Monterey Pass was fought along a rugged mountain ridge, in a blinding thunderstorm, during the middle of the night on July 4 & 5, 1863, just one day after the close of the battle of Gettysburg. The battle eventually spilled into Maryland during the early morning hours of July 5th, making it the only battle to be fought on both sides of the Mason Dixon Line. Through these exhibits, the museum encourages its visitors to explore the past and its relationship to our shared future. Expect at least forty-five minutes to view the museum.

Early Settlement : A Fron Chambers Fort Park, Chambersburg 40 Spring Street
In 1734, Scots-Irish immigrant Benjamin Chambers licensed the purchase of 400 acres from William Penn and began the settlement of Chambersburg around the confluence of the Conococheague Creek and the Falling Spring. The 14-foot drop was sufficient to power the waterwheel for Chamber’s grain mill and sawmill. Today, the area is home to Chambers Fort Park. The centerpiece of the park is “The Homecoming,” a bronze statue depicting the return of the town founder’s son, James, and grandson, Benjamin, from the Revolutionary War. Another highlight is the replica waterwheel. Though the area is surely different, a walk across the bridge and just a moment with eyes closed renders the same sounds of rushing water that Benjamin Chambers heard when he selected this as his home.
Fort Loudoun, Village of Fort Loudon 1720 North Brooklyn Road
A provincial British fortification, Fort Loudoun was built in 1756, when the county’s settlers were British subjects. It was a supply base for the British during the campaign to oust the French from Fort Duquesne. But, it is most noted as the site of colonial rebellion by James Smith and the Black Boys—ten years before the outset of the Revolutionary War. Smith and his men fired on the fort when the British overlooked the repeated trade of weapons and ammunition with the Indians and would not return weapons confiscated from local residents. The British abandoned Fort Loudoun in 1765. The incident inspired the 1939 classic Allegheny Uprising with John Wayne.

News of the seizure of Fort Sumter came by telegram to Franklin County on April 12, 1861 and was followed by a message that President Lincoln was seeking 75,000 men to serve for three months to quell the rebellion. By early June, 20,000 men were trained and staged from Chambersburg. War had come to Franklin County. Confederate general Jeb Stuart’s seized horses, food ammunition, and hostages in Mercersburg. The Confederates continued on to Chambersburg, taking more horses, cutting the telegraph wires, and burning the railroad shops. A key objective of the Confederate mission was to burn the railroad bridge, near Scotland, but local residents convinced Confederates that the bridge was stone. It was not, and transportation via rail continued uninterrupted. Nonetheless, Stuart’s Raid was deemed a Confederate success. Shortly thereafter, President Lincoln dismissed General George McClellan from his command of the Union troops.

Hunting It is no coincidence that early frontiersmen carried the original weapon of the frontier, the Pennsylvania rifle. Today’s outdoor men and women can find abundant game and wildlife. Whether armed with today’s version of the Pennsylvania rifle, a camera, or cell phone—a trip to Franklin County will prove worthwhile. Franklin County is 465,000 acres. More than half the area of Franklin County is undeveloped land, providing good habitat for a variety of wildlife and bid species. The county is comprised by Michaux State Forest in the eastern part of the county, Buchanan State Forest in the western portion, and Tuscarora State Forest in the north. It provides good hunting for deer, rabbit, squirrel and turkey. Camping at State Parks opens just before trout season in May and closes when deer season ends in December.
Birding & Wildlife Birders are drawn to the vegetation and landscape to see dozens of bird species. Birders will enjoy Renfrew Park in Waynesboro, Out of the Ore Birds & Bloom Walking Trail near Penn National Golf Course and the Penn State Mont Alto Campus, and the trails of Norlo Park. The Conococheague Audubon Society maintains annual records for the organization’s Christmas Bird Count to introduce visitors to the many species to spot in Franklin County. The list is available online: www.conococheagueaudubon.org. Franklin County is a migratory path of numerous raptors, including the American Bald Eagle. The Cowans Gap of the Tuscarora Mountain is a good viewing spot for migrating raptors.

Cozy Up in Franklin County Next Winter When snow comes, tubers and skiers head to Whitetail Ski Resort. With 23 trails and nine lifts, it is easy to turn a “snow day” into a weekend getaway. Snow also draws cross-country skiers to the peacefulness and quiet beauty of Cowans Gap and Caledonia State Parks. Ice skating is great fun, so strap on those skates and head to Cowans Gap Lake for a crisp winter-outing. The area adjacent to the beach offers ice skating when temperatures drop to freeze the lake to a safe thickness. The lake serves dual duty and offers ice fishing. The ice thickness is only monitored in the area by the beach for skating. Be sure ice is a minimum of four inches for ice fishing and carry safety equipment. The South Mountain area of Michaux State Forest is about 85,000 acres, covering the three state parks of Mont Alto, Caledonia, and Pine Grove Furnace. Snowmobilers can parallel Route 233 on the Piney Mountain Ridge Road. Winter weekends are great in Frankin County. Outside it is one of the prettiest times of the year, and inside one of the coziest as restaurants and lodging put another log on the fireplace. Cozy up in Franklin County this winter!

Great Art Inspiration!
Marjorie Tressler-Oil painter It’s been over 50 years since Marjorie Tressler, first picked up a paint brush but when inspired around the age of 4 after visiting local art museums, she’s never looked back. Tressler owns Studio One in Waynesboro. She studied art at the Schuler School of Fine Arts, teaches oil and acrylic painting classes during Destination Arts! and is a curator and gallery director for Gallery 50. Watching people come and explore the Gallery 50 inspires her. She likes helping new artists get “a-ha” moments. “I try to simplify things and think about how it was when I was first learning. I try not to make it too complicated or overwhelming and take them step by step and make it fun,” she said. Tressler is drawn to landscapes, portraits and still life in her own work. “I like to capture the light and the landscapes. I like to do paintings with people in them,” she said. “Landscape without life is not as interesting to me or as emotional.” Tressler contributed to Destination Arts from the beginning. “For the project [Gallery 50] it was a huge undertaking. We need a village to have a project like this. Waynesboro came through. Waynesboro was that village.” For more about Marjorie Tressler or to see more of her work, visit her website: studioonefineart.com. 24 │GREAT MOMENTS

Chambersburg Community Theatre The Chambersburg Community Theatre is a place for everyone to express “Silver Whistle”- 1955 themselves. As the theater finishes its 63rd season and opens its 64th season in fall 2018, the organization has the people to thank for its successes, says Sally Herritt, executive director. “We have been having some great years lately,” Herritt said. “It has been the people who kept it going, people who loved the organization and what it did for them and then, what it did for others.” The theater started in 1954 and has been open to all ages, backgrounds and locations. Since its founding, the theater company, which performs at the Capitol Theatre, has had actors as young as 5 and 6, as well as actors in their 80’s grace the stage. “Some are brand new to theatre and some have been doing it for years,” she said. “For the majority of people, it is just something they would like to do and give it a try.” Chambersburg Community Theatre welcomes actors as well as people who want to “Peter Pan”- 2014 sew, do makeup and other talents behind the scenes. Being involved in theater also has many benefits, Herritt said. “Theater allows you to express yourself,” she said. “It helps you grow perspective on life and understand people better.”

Beekeeping is old, dating back more than 8,000 years and the use of honey is older, used originally for the wealthy due to its rarity. It was used as not only a food but a healing agent, a beautifier and even as a religious artifact. Some claim it can help in weight loss, sleep and that it can slow aging. The Bee Hive, located at 3696 Falling Spring Road in Chambersburg, sells honey and honey products from a small shop set up near their home.

“We started keeping bees in the early 80’s,” said Mary Anne Knepper, who runs the store with her husband. They sell raw honey, Golden Pride and Barlean’s products and other items in their store. Knepper said that honey and the products made with honey are good for you due to do the natural antibiotics within the honey. Bees produce something called “propolis” which is a natural glue substance for them and in humans, she said, and has been shown to help heal burns and cuts. Also found in bee pollen is EDTA, which helps in chelation therapy to treat those with lead poisoning, she said. “I’ve always said that a beehive is more sterile than a hospital,” she said, laughing. What’s Brewing in Franklin County…. GearHouse Brewing Co. on Grant Street in Chambersburg is Franklin County’s newest craft brewery, opening in January 2017. It all started with the camaraderie and friendship of three couples--Erin and David Kozloski, Heather and LaVan Gray, and Candice and Jessee McMath. They bonded over craft beer and decided to make their own. From there, Gearhouse Brewing Co. was conceived and born. Brewer David Kozloski brings ten years of fermenting experience to crafting Gearhouse’s beers, previously working at Tröegs Independent Brewing and Flying Dog Brewing Co. Complementing the original and flavorful beers is an industrial, imaginative interior.
From the tin ceiling to the repurposed wood and the large gear at the entrance, the atmosphere pays tribute to the working history of the property. As operations grow, Gearhouse is creating and rotating beers and uses the hops from the garden, planted outside the brewery. Some of the offerings of the first year are Puzzling Pilsner, Saison de Rhubarb, and Shifting Gears IPA. To see what’s on tap, visit Thursday, 4PM-10PM; Fridays, 4PM-11PM,, and Saturdays, Noon10PM.
