Martin’s Mill Bridge is one of two covered bridges in Franklin County with another--Witherspoon Bridge-located near Mercersburg PA. Martins Mill Bridge is the second largest covered bridge in the state of Pennsylvania and the largest lattice truss bridge in the state. After a fourth renovation, it reopened in October 2015.

Great History

Early Inhabitants The early inhabitants of Franklin County date back to the Ice Age. Remnants of these prehistoric encampments surfaced near springs and streams and were excavated, revealing hunting artifacts and tools that date back to before the Paleo Period when mammoths and mastodons roamed the region.

Frontier In the 1700s, Franklin County was the frontier. Scots-Irish, German, and Welsh immigrants settled throughout Franklin County, establishing homesteads and hamlets. These immigrants were seeking freedom and opportunity and were drawn to Franklin County, which was reminiscent of their homelands and offered the natural resources needed to build a prosperous, new life.

Connections to the Past

Ebert Springs, south of Greencastle, dates back to the prehistoric era. The Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission named Ebert Springs an archaeological super site and efforts are underway to create an archaeological preserve and heritage park.

Allison-Antrim Museum in Greencastle will house the collection of artifacts, some dating back 10,000 years.

Frontier Forts

Homes and settlements sprang up along the frontier of Franklin County and at first, relationships with the Native American Indians were friendly.

Tension increased as more immigrants settled along the frontier of Franklin County, infringing on hunting lands and pushing the Native American Indians westward. Influences of the French-allied Indians added to the strain. The friendly relationship deteriorated, and settlers began building fortifications around their homes to protect themselves from attacks.

Benjamin Chambers, founder of Chambersburg, constructed a fort around his home, gristmill and sawmill, which were located near the Conococheague Creek and Falling Spring. Surrounded by water on all three sides, Chambers Fort was 90-ft. wide by 300-ft. long and was defended by swivel cannons and blunderbusses.

Fort Davis was built in about 1754 and was about 2 miles south of Claylick on the Welsh Run. It was a settler’s fort also used by the PA colonial militia.

Fort McCord was built about 1755 and attacked by the Delaware tribesmen led by Chief Shingas in April 1756. Twenty-seven inhabitants were killed, scalped, or kidnapped. Today, the site is marked by a Celtic Cross near Edenville.

Fort Morris was built in 1755 and was one of a line of frontier defenses erected to protect local settlers and garrison provincial troops. After a 2008 archaeological dig, Burd Street in Shippensburg was identified as the likely site of the fort. The location documented in journals of the period match the Burd Street site, plus more than 2800 artifacts were found, including a 12-lb. cannonball and flintlocks.

Fort at Steele’s Meetinghouse was a log meetinghouse and church within a stockade and was located three miles east of Mercersburg along the West Branch of Conococheague Creek.

Native Americans of Frank lin County The first inhabitants of the Cumberland Valley were Native Americans. Tribes hunted in the area but did not have permanent settlements. They made temporary homes near streams and creeks and were hunters, gatherers, and foragers. The primary tribe of the region was the Lenni Lenape, often called the Delaware.

Protection! The Reason to The British built Fort Loudoun to protect settlers along the frontier in 1756 as the French & Indian War impacted the frontier of Franklin County. Fort Loudoun served the Forbes Expedition as it built the Forbes Road across southern Pennsylvania to facilitate travel and supply lines to Pittsburgh.

Though the British outpost began as a source of protection for Franklin County’s frontier colonials, it was attacked by the people it was to protect for risking their safety. More than ten years before colonials confronted the British at Lexington, Massachusetts, James Smith and his men, called the Black Boys, would confront the British at Fort Loudoun, Pennsylvania.

Trading companies motivated by a chance for profit brought in guns, gunpowder, hatchets and knives, and these ended up being used against settlers in the Indian attacks. Angry that the British would permit this dangerous trading, James Smith and the Black Boys decided to stop the trade of weapons to protect their homes and families.

On March 5, 1765, Smith and the Black Boys stopped a pack horse caravan of eighty-one horses at both Mercersburg and McConnellsburg, cautioning the traders to not proceed with the illegal materials. The convoy did not heed the warning.

The next day, the Black Boys stopped the caravan at Sideling Hill and set fire to the contraband. The angry traders appealed to the British authorities at Fort Loudoun. The British arrested several citizens. In response, James Smith gathered 300 men and marched on the fort, where they captured enough men to exchange two British soldiers for each colonial. But, the British kept the weapons of the incarcerated men--a major offense to the frontiersmen, who depended on their rifles for hunting and protection. Over the next several months, the Black Boys continued to confront the traders and clash with the British at Fort Loudoun. It culminated on November 16, 1765, when James Smith and the Black Boys surrounded Fort Loudoun. The contingent grew to 100 men, firing on the fort throughout the night. The British surrendered. The weapons confiscated months earlier were returned, and Fort Loudoun was abandoned by the British in November 1765.

Enoch Brown

On July 26, 1764, four Delaware warriors massacred schoolmaster Enoch Brown and 11 students. Brown pleaded with the warriors to spare the children before being shot and scalp. The warriors then began to tomahawk and scalp the children. One student survived being scalped by dragging himself to a nearby spring after the attack. When the Warriors returned to their village and showed the scalps they had taken, they were rebuked as as cowards by an old Delaware chief. Enoch Brown and the school children were buried in a common grave. In 1885, the area was designated Enoch Brown Park. A memorial and park mark the site, on Grant Shook Road off PA Route 16.

Mary Jemison At the height of the French and Indian tensions, Mary Jemison and her family were captured by the Shawnee along Marsh Creek in the South Mountains. The raiding party with captives in town headed West toward Fort Duquesne in Pittsburgh. The group was too large and too slow and the local militia were closing ground. At nightfall Mary was separated from her family to continue the journey. The rest of the Jamison family were killed and scalped. Mary was purchased by members of The Seneca Tribe at Fort Duquesne.

She was adopted by a Seneca family and named Dehgewanus, which means to falling voices. She lived the rest of her life with the Seneca, raising a family. She lived to be 90 years old.

Jean McCord Lowry Jean McCord Lowry was the sister of William McCord, who built Fort McCord and was married to John Lowry.

When Indians attacked Fort McCord on April 1st 1756, she was in the fort stockade and the Indians set the fort afire. She tossed her three children out the second-floor window of her home to save their lives. They landed in the hands of an attacking Indian, who had just killed her husband. Jean was expecting another child and to save herself jumped out the window and was caught by Indians. She was taken by the Indians to Canada, held there, and worked in the household of the French governor. A devout Presbyterian, she held fast to her beliefs.

Ultimately, she was taken to England and exchanged for French prisoners of war. She returned to America and was reunited with her children 8 years later when they were rescued by Pennsylvania frontiersmen.

James Smith James Smith, known for his role with the Black Boys and the surrender of Fort Loudon, was captured at age 18 by the Caughnawaga tribe, part of the Iroquois nation. Smith survived the gauntlet, a form of torture Indians subjected their captives, and adopted him into their tribe. He lived among the Indians and observed their methods of warfare. After five years, he escaped and returned to Franklin County, where he shared his knowledge of Indian warfare. The Black Boys, named because they would darken their faces just as the Indian warriors did before battle, used these methods in defending their frontier homes.

Explore Early American Scots-Irish, German and Welsh immigrants settled throughout Franklin County, establishing homesteads and hamlets around present-day Chambersburg, Greencastle, Mercersburg, Shippensburg and Waynesboro.

Remnants near streams and springs of Franklin County were found by archeologists date back 10,000 years to the Ice Age. These hunting items and tools were left by nomadic hunters, following herds of animals into the county.

1791 James Buchanan, 15th President, is born in Mercersburg.

1794 Escaping enslaved use Franklin County Underground Railroad sites. The area had a large free African-American population and by 1860, had fifth largest African-American population in Pennsylvania.

1859 Abolitionist John Brown uses Chambersburg as a northern headquarters in the Raid on Harpers Ferry

George Washington stops in Chambersburg on trip west to put down Whiskey Rebellion. He sleeps overnight at what was called Morrow Tavern on Main Street in Chambersburg.

South Carolina seceds from union after Lincoln wins election

President Lincoln meets with PA Senator Simon Cameron, Gen. Winfield Scott, and Col. A.K. McClure, a Chambersburg lawyer, newspaper editor and leader of PA Republicans to gain help in securing Union troops. By June, 20,000 Union soldiers trained in Chambersburg.

History in Franklin County Settlements along the Franklin County frontier sprang up.

This pushed Native American inhabitants westward and caused them to lash out against settlers. Chambers Fort, Fort Davis, Fort Maxwell and Fort Marshall are notible fortifications of the Franklin County frontier.

Franklin County, named after Benjamin Franklin, officially formed.

In return for three plots of land for three congregations, Falling Spring Presbyterian, First Lutheran, and Zion Reformed, Benjamin Chambers requested that each congregation would pay a yearly rent of one rose to a descendant of the Chambers Family. Today, all three congregations continue the tradition of the Rose Rent.

Mason-Dixon Survey The Penn family of Pennsylvania and the Calvert family of Maryland claimed ownership of the same land. Holding fast to the claims, the Penns and Calverts pleaded their cases in the court of England. To settle the dispute, the court ordered two surveyors and astronomers-- Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon--to establish the boundary between the two states. A marker was placed every mile and a larger crown stone every 5 miles.

The crown stones, made from limestone and imported from England, show the Penn coat of arms on one side and on the other side the Calvert family coat of arms. Not only did Mason and Dixon’s surveying ensure that Greencastle and Philadelphia remained in Pennsylvania, but in future years the Mason-Dixon Line became commonly referred to as the line between the North and the South.

Whiskey Rebellion As the new president of the United States, George Washington faced the first test of the young nation’s power when farmers in western Pennsylvania, angered by the tax levied on grain alcohols, refused to pay the taxes and attacked tax collectors. The farmers used grain alcohol as a currency and the tax removed their profit. The federal government applied the tax dollars to the debt of the Revolutionary War. In July 1794, the whiskey tax issue came to a head when western PA Farmers attacked a federal marshal. President Washington called out the militia. This confrontation was known as the Whiskey Rebellion.

On Washington’s trip to squelch the Rebellion, he spent the night at Morrow Tavern on South Main Street in Chambersburg. Many of Franklin County farmers sympathized with their western neighbors as converting the grain to alcohol was a popular way to get more value for a corn or rye crop.

Birthplace of James Buchanan In 1791, James Buchanan, who would become the 15th president of the United States, was born in a log cabin about 2.5 miles west of Mercersburg at Stony Batter, a trading post operated by Buchanan’s father. When Buchanan was 5 years old, the family moved to Mercersburg. They lived on the Main Street and operated a general store in the building that is the present-day James Buchanan Pub and Restaurant. Across the street is the home of Harriet Lane, Buchanan’s niece, who served as the Mistress of the White House during Buchanan’s presidency. To commemorate her uncle, Harriet Lane set aside funds to create the 600-lb. pyramid monument at the presidential birthplace and a memorial at Meridian Park in Washington DC.

Find your family In the first half of the 1700s, Franklin County attracted many Scots-Irish and German immigrants, seeking to establish new homes. Annually, hundreds of genealogy researchers find their way to Franklin County.

Approximately one-third of America’s ancestry is Scots-Irish or German.

In addition to the many cemeteries of Franklin County, researchers can explore archives at Franklin County Courthouse, Franklin County Historical Society at the Old Jail, Allison Antrim Museum, Conococheague Institute, Fendrick Library, Waynesboro Historical Society, Antietam Historical Association, Mont Alto Historical Society, and Preserving Our Heritage Museum.

Rose Rent Religion was very important to all the settlers that came to Franklin County.

Benjamin Chambers, founder of Chambersburg, recognized the influential role religion played in the community. He set aside three plots of land for three congregations in Chambersburg - Falling Spring Presbyterian, First Lutheran and Zion Reformed. In return for the land, Chambers requested that each congregation would pay a yearly rent of one rose to a descendant of the Chambers family. All three congregations continue today and honor the tradition of the Rose Rent.

Trail to Freedom:

The Underground Railroad in Franklin County Franklin County played an important role in the passage to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

Its location just north of the Mason-Dixon Line signaled escaping slaves entry to the north, and the mountainous terrain afforded numerous hiding places in caves and wooded areas. Chambersburg, Greencastle, and Mercersburg had substantial free black populations, and by 1860, Franklin County had the fifth largest black population.

Equality, Abolition & Underground Railroad in Franklin County It was no mistake that radical abolitionist John Brown selected Chambersburg as his supply base and staging area for his raid on Harpers Ferry. Chambersburg had excellent access by rail, was located in the north, yet was still close enough to the South for Brown to deploy his attack.

In the summer of 1859, Brown and several of his associates stayed at 255 East King Street in Chambersburg, the Boarding House of Mary Ritner. Brown assumed the identity of Isaac Smith owner of a mining operation. Under this guise, Brown was able to receive the heavy shipments of weapons for his planned takeover of the Arsenal at Harpers Ferry.

During his stay in Chambersburg, Brown met with abolitionists including the famous anti-slavery author and lecturer Frederick Douglass. Even though Douglas was opposed to Brown’s plan to create a slave uprising, he met with Brown at an old stone quarry outside of Chambersburg in August 1859. Brown was unable to convince Douglass to join the raid on Harpers Ferry.

Brown sent the weapons that he had been stockpiling in Chambersburg to the Kennedy Farm, just over the Maryland border. On Sunday evening, October 16, 1859, Brown and 21 of his supporters slipped into Harpers Ferry. They seized the federal Arsenal, killed seven men and injured about a dozen more. When news of the attack reached Richmond, the US Marines rushed to Harpers Ferry to regain the arsenal. Under fire, Brown and his men barricaded themselves in a small brick building and refused to surrender. Finally, a company of Marines, commanded by Colonel Robert E Lee, stormed the building and captured Brown and his men.

John Brown was tried and found guilty of murder, treason, and inciting a slave insurrection. He was hanged along with nine of his followers on December 2, 1859 in Charlestown.

Chambersburg Underground Railroad Activity A historic marker on Memorial Square marks the Underground Railroad activity of Chambersburg, where many free blacks participated in the Underground Railroad. The majority of the African American population was concentrated in the South Ward.

Henry Watson a local barber and Joseph Winters an inventor and author were two known agents of the Underground Railroad.

In addition, Abrahm and Mary Ritner, who resided on King Street were abolitionists, supporting Underground Railroad activity.

Abrahm was a conductor on the Cumberland Valley Railroad and his father was the abolitionist PA Governor, Joseph Ritner. Abram was believed to have secreted escaping slaves on the Cumberland Valley Railroad as it moved North through Pennsylvania. After Abrahm’s death, Mary operated a boarding house, where John Brown and his men stayed in the summer leading up to the 1859 Raid on Harpers Ferry.

Mercersburg Escape Routes The Mercersburg African American population was the largest in Franklin County. Just eight miles over the Mason-Dixon Line, Mercersburg offered many escape routes that were former Native American pathways. Escaping slaves followed the Warm Springs Indian Trail, which parallels PA 75, in Mercersburg. From here, escaping slaves would travel to Chambersburg to the safe houses along the current Route 30, and then on to Shippensburg along present-day Route 11. From Shippensburg escapees made their way to Carlisle, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, into New York State, and on to freedom in Canada. In the 1820s, African Americans begin to settle long Fayette Street in Mercersburg. The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, believed to be part of the Underground Railroad, was located in this neighborhood, as is the Zion Union Cemetery where numerous U.S. Colored Troops are buried.

Greencastle Underground Railroad Connections: The Anderson Family Located approximately three miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line near Greencastle, the farmhouse of freedman Timothy Anderson was a safe house on the Underground Railroad in the years before and during the Civil War. Matthew Anderson (1845-1928), son of Timothy, heard stories told by freedom seekers hidden in his family home and wrote about this experience in his biography, stating, “ Among the earliest impressions made upon my childish mind were the tales of horror about the South told by the fleeing fugitive as he lay in the secret enclosure of my father’s house where he was concealed. “ Matthew Anderson went on to attend Iberia and Oberlin College and attained a Masters of Divinity from Princeton. In 1880, Matthew married Caroline Still, the daughter of William Still , Philadelphia Vigilance Committee leader and Underground Railroad activist. By the late 19th century, Matthew established religious, vocational training, and banking institutions that continue today. Brother Timothy Anderson Jr. became a sergeant in the U.S. Colored Troops.

Frederick Douglass in Chambersburg

In August 1859, when abolitionist Frederick Douglass came to Chambersburg for his secret meeting with John Brown, townspeople recognized him and pressed him to give a speech. This speech was given in a building on the square called the Franklin Repository, since burned in the 1864 Civil War burning of Chambersburg.

The site is adjacent to the 1865 Franklin County Courthouse.

Underground Railroad of South Mountain Franklin County offered a number of entry points as well as the natural protection of mountains, forests, and caves.

The Jacob Shockey farm, near Rouzerville close to the Maryland line, was at the foot of the South Mountain.

The forest sheltered fugitives as they made their way to the Shockey Farm. Under cover of darkness, Shockey would guide escaped slaves eight miles to the Hiram Wertz farm, near Quincy. From the Wertz Farm, escapees traveled another eight miles to an African-American

community near Thaddeus Stevens Ironworks. Today the route parallels PA 997. The community sometimes called Africa, was the third largest African American population in Franklin County in 1850.

Civil War & News of the seizure of Fort Sumter came by telegram to Franklin County on April 12, 1861 and was followed by a message that President Lincoln was seeking 75,000 men to serve for three months to quell the rebellion. By early June, 20,000 men were trained and staged from Chambersburg. War had come to Franklin County.

Confederate general Jeb Stuart’s seized horses, food ammunition, and hostages in Mercersburg. The Confederates continued on to Chambersburg, taking more horses, cutting the telegraph wires, and burning therailroad shops. A key objective of the Confederate mission was to burn the railroad bridge, near Scotland, but local residents convinced Confederates that the bridge was stone. It was not, and transportation via rail continued uninterrupted.

Nonetheless, Stuart’s Raid was deemed a Confederate success. Shortly thereafter, President Lincoln dismissed General George McClellan from his command of the Union troops.

1863 was a year of destiny for the nation and Franklin County. In mid-June, more than 70,000 Confederate troops led by General Robert E. Lee entered Pennsylvania in what became known as the Gettysburg campaign.

There were 20 military actions in Franklin County during the campaign. Corporal William Rihl of the first New York “Lincoln” Cavalry was killed in an ambush at Fleming Farm, near Greencastle. Rihl was the first Union soldier killed on Pennsylvania soil in the Civil War.

Franklin County Confederate Commander Robert E. Lee and 70,000 men camped in and around Chambersburg, planning to move towards Harrisburg. General A.P. Hill brought word of advancing Union troops, and Lee shifted directions, moving Confederate troops east toward Gettysburg, where Union troops stopped the Confederates from advancing further into the North.

June 26-30, 1863

July 4, 1863 A 17-mile train of wounded and dying men began to retreat through Franklin County.

The retreat from Gettysburg included the second largest battle in Pennsylvania, the Battle of Monterey Pass. Fought during a driving thunderstorm in the mountains east of Waynesboro throughout the late hours of July 4 and the early hours of July 5, the conflict involved 10,000 Confederate and Union soldiers.

July 4-5, 1863

July 30, 1864 Under order of General Jubal early, General John McCausland issued a ransom demand of $100,000 in gold or $500,000 in Yankee currency or Chambersburg would be burned.

The demand was not met, and the core of the town was set ablaze. Loss of property and possessions totaled over $1.5 million and more than 2,000 people were left homeless.

Franklin County’s freestone’s streams are home to populations of wild Brown and Brook Trout. The Conococheague Creek has two branches. One branch has its source in the northwest corner of Franklin County. The East branch increases in width as it flows through Caledonia State Park and Michaux State Forest. The West Branch runs through the Buchanan State Forest. The shade of the forest and the many springs along the route keep the water cool. Eventually the course comes together near Greencastle PA, goes into Maryland and flows into the Potomac. There are pocket populations of wild brown trout all along both branches of the Conococheague Creek.

The Conodoguinet Creek has its source in the western part of the county and flows into Letterkenny Reservoir and past Roxbury on the way to the Susquehanna River. There are several springs and spring creeks that flow into the Conodoguinet along its course. The shade of Buchanan State Forest helps to keep the water cool. There are pockets of wild trout and native brook trout all along this route.

The Antietam Creek has two branches as well. The east branch has its source in the Waynesboro Reservoir. There are populations of wild native brook trout in the tributaries that feed the lake and just downstream from the reservoir. The west branch of the Antietam Creek has its source in the South Mountain region of Franklin County. There are pockets of wild rainbow brown and brook trout along its route. The two branches join north of the county’s border with Maryland and flow to the Potomac.

There are several spring creeks within 25 miles of Chambersburg, and they are home to populations of wild rainbow and brown trout in Franklin County. The Falling Spring Branch is one of the most popular wild trout streams in the country. Presidents, senators, and other celebrities have fished these waters for more than a hundred years.

Because they are more challenging to catch them stocked trout, there are several things that make wild trout special. They have a better sense of what is good cover and places to hide. They are extremely intelligent, having seen natural food all of their lives they know what is safe and what is not. Wild trout eat midges, leeches, other fish, mayfly nymphs, mayfly adults, bees, grasshoppers, crickets, crayfish and about anything else that crawls, flies, jumps, or swims.

g n i k a y a K The waters of Franklin County offer kayaking for all levels. Smooth water or challenging Franklin County waterways are waiting to be kayaked. The Conococheague Creeks has multiple points to drop in, including spots near Rabbit Run Creek and behind Talhelm Gas in Greencastle.

Other places to kayak include the lake at Long Pine and Cowans Gap. Yellow Breeches and the Potomac River in neighboring counties are also good places to kayak.

Take A Hike

The Tuscarora Trail at Cowans Gap State Park offers an adaptable moderate to difficult hike. Tuscarora Trail is a spur trail to the Appalachian Trail. A popular section to explore at Cowans Gap is a 1.5 mile segment beginning across Aughwick Road across from parking lot number 3 of the park. Tuscarora Trail climbs along Tuscarora Mountain and junctions with Geyer Trail. If you want to return to the day use area, retrace your walk. From Geyers Trail, if you are a relatively experienced hiker with good skills, you can pick up Cameron Trail and make a steep climb to Cove Mountain. Taking Plessinger Trail trip will take you along Aughwick Creek--a good opportunity to see wildlife or even catch a few fish. Simply head south on Tuscarora Trail for another 2.4miles to end up on the top of Big Mountain which overlooks the Path Valley area Franklin County. Hiking on this trail gives a good opportunity to see rock outcroppings and rock fields. The return hike is about four miles.

A little easier trailer at Cowans Gap is the Lakeside Trail. It’s 1.5 miles around the perimeter of the lake, and it’s beautiful yearround.

The Cumberland Valley Rail Trail is approximately ten miles. It connects Shippensburg to Newville. The trail is the old rail line of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. Walkers, bikers, joggers and horseback riders are invited to access the trail at Shippensburg’s Township Park at Britton Road. No motorized vehicles please.

Take A Hike...A Family Hike!

For a family hike, picking up part of the Appalachian Trail in Franklin County is picturesque and educational. The AT actually passes through the open field where the playground equipment is at Caledonia and is near the Ramble Trail, which is a circular trail. It is a pretty walk with good views of rhododendron and hemlocks.

This hike gives a sense of the history of the location. Once Caledonia State Park was the Ironworks of Thaddeus Stevens and part of the hike follows the millrace of the old furnace. It is about a 3 mile loop and dogs are allowed on a leash. The AT is blazed white and the Ramble Trail is blazed yellow.

Hunting stays open through deer season. Caledonia opens in late May and also remains open through deer season.

Deer and turkey are plentiful in the Tuscarora State Forest, which overlays a portion of Cowan’s Gap State Park. In all, the Tuscarora State Forest has 45,000 acres in Perry, Franklin and Cumberland Counties and is very good habitat for deer. With a combination of forest and farms, food is plentiful and there is good cover.

Tuscarora Forest has a good squirrel population, also. The population fluctuates with the success of the acorn crops.

Michaux State Forest has nearly 85,000 acres available for small game and deer hunting and some of the land is part of Caledonia State Park.

The land in Caledonia, where hunted is permitted, is higher terrain. Both Cowan’s Gap and Caledonia State Parks have camping for hunting and fishing.

Game is plentiful at Letterkenny Army Depot in Franklin County. Around June of each year, Letterkenny Army Depot Natural Resources department invites the public to learn about the hunting programs, regulations, and application process. Wounded Warriors Hunt at Letterkenny Letterkenny Army Depot teams up for regular hunts with Wounded Warriors, a national program to honor and empower injured service men and women. Members of the Wounded Warriors program hunt deer from a heated blind and help harvest turkey at the Spring Gobbler Hunt. The program works to give the chance for camaraderie and sportsmanship in an outdoor and hunting experience.

Just 5 miles off of I-81, Chambersburg skydiving is the only full-service skydiving center in south central Pennsylvania. It is within a two-hour drive of Baltimore, Washington, Gettysburg, and Hershey. Jumpers have been descending the beautiful Skies of Franklin County for more than 30 years.

Explore South Mountain’s Out of the Ore: Birds and Blooms Walking Trail

Pennsylvania’s South Mountain forest has red oak, white oak, tulip trees, red maples and hickories. Within the landscape is a unique pocket where northern and southern species live together in an area called “Meeting of the Pines,” which includes white, shortleaf, pitch, table mountain, and Virginia pines. The lower canopy of this forests includes mountain laurel, wild blackberry, and black huckleberry.

Humid summer temperatures create a thriving underbrush where insects are plentiful, attracting 47 species of birds year-round, documented by the local birding chapter, Conococheague Audubon, in the PA Migration Count and Christmas Count.

Totem Pole Playhouse Franklin County’s Totem Pole Playhouse is one special spot almost hidden among the pine trees of Michaux. Conceived by the husband-and-wife team of John Putch and Jean Stapleton, Totem Pole got its start when summer theater was not nearly as rare as it is today. The beauty and peacefulness surrounding the playhouse is part of its personality. The setting inspired art and allowed actors to return to the stage for intimate, live performance. Through sixtysix seasons, Totem Pole has been guided by several able hands, and today, Rowan Joseph lends his service.

No matter who is leading Totem Pole, one thing will not change. It is rooted, just like the trees, in inspiration and beauty.

Earthworks...Stickworks: It is Land Art Nature nurtures great art. Wilson College has the proof in a land art exhibit by environmental artist Patrick Dougherty.

Stickworks was completed in October 2015 with the help of dozens of volunteers and about five tons of sticks from the Wilson Campus and nearby Shippensburg. Dougherty created more than 250 pieces of land art, and the installation at Wilson College is one of six in PA.

The Waynesboro Community Concert The Waynesboro Community Concert Association is dedicated to bringing live musical performance to Franklin County. 2016-2017 is the 80th concert season and will bring David Burnham’s Broadway in September, Ronnie Kole Trio in October, Next Generation Leahy Family in November, Tenoré in April 2017, and The Equinox Little Big Band in May 2017. Chambersburg Council for the Arts Established in 1987, Chambersburg’s Council for the Arts focuses on sharing art and building community through the innovation and inspiration that art cultivates. The Council, newly located at 81 North Main Street, offers classes for all ages in a variety of art forms, summer camps for children and teens, and rotating art exhibits.

The Thought Lot in Downtown Shippensburg Every artists needs a space. The Thought Lot, on Garfield Street in Shippensburg has 10,000 sq. ft. for art exhibits, music shows, studio rentals, workshops, classes, and art events. As the name implies, it is a place to imagine and create!

Franklin County Art Alliance With more than 100 artists, Franklin County Art Alliance (FCAA) connects the visual arts community throughout Franklin County and adjoining areas. The FCAA Annual Art Exhibition celebrated 45 years in 2016 with more than 300 pieces of art from 80 artists.

Throughout the year, the organization educates and inspires at meetings on the second Wednesday of January through April, September, October, and November. Open to the public with no fee, the sessions are 7 PM to 9 PM at Grove Family Library, Ragged Edge Road in Chambersburg.

Chambersburg Ballet Theatre : Where Dancers Are Hand-made Lavinia Reid established the Chambersburg Ballet Theatre seventeen years ago to spread appreciation of dance as an art that brings people together, to inspire, and to provide the opportunity for regional dancers to perform.. CBT is a labor of love. It blends the young company with professional and preprofessional dancers. Each year, CBT brings several productions to the stage of the Capitol Theatre in

downtown Chambersburg, where the company resides, and holds a summer dance camp.

Chambersburg Community Theatre Chambersburg Community Theatre began in 1954 and contributed a means for amateur performers to be part of live theatre and bring good-quality entertainment to the community. Tens of thousands have enjoyed CCT, both on stage and from the audience. The 2016-2017 season includes The Uninvited in September, Beauty and the Beast in November, Don’t Drink the Water in March [2017], and Anne of Green Gables in May [2017].

Cumberland Valley School of Music Cumberland Valley School of Music (CVSM) fosters lifelong learning in music and is a full-member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

In addition to teaching band, orchestra, piano, and theatre technique, CVSM has a community symphonic band, community string orchestra, a semi-professional jazz orchestra, a youth chorus, and a band and string orchestra for individuals 50 years or older. Founded in 1990 and housed in Thomson Hall at Wilson College, Cumberland Valley School of Music has 45 instructors and 750 students.

Clay Art Clay art is traditional art; yet, it is unique and personal, giving the potter a chance to connect directly with nature to make one-of-a-kind art. Franklin County is known for 19th century potter John Bell, whose redware and stoneware blend European and American styles and used unusual colors and innovative glazes. The Nicodemus Center for Ceramic Studies, organized in 1994 to preserve and interpret regional pottery, operates two pottery studios, one at Penn State Mont Alto and another at the Ceramic Arts Center on 13 South Church Street in Waynesboro.

Both offer classes, and pottery can be purchased at the Ceramic Arts Center.

Joyful Arts Studio in downtown Greencastle Laughing, smiling, and having a good time relaxes the mind to explore individual creativity. At Joyful Arts Studio, exploring creativity is a number one goal. Art classes, such as: Creating Your Way To JOY, Watercolor Batik Poppies on Rice Paper, or Tree of Life will have you relaxing, laughing, and enjoying art.

Hot Java Coffee Shop, 1055 Lincoln Way East in Chambersburg, presents the House of Oz. It is live performances by local artists on the patio every Friday evening from 7 PM -11 PM during summer. Great local entertainment plus open mic. Hot Java serves great summer fare.

Studio U on the Square inside Anna’s Paperworks, Greencastle Studio U on the Square is located on Center Square inside Anna’s Paperworks. It is a combination work area and co-op art display. John Flannery created two dynamic dining destinations in Franklin County--the John Allison Public House in Greencastle and Flannery’s Tavern on the Square in Mercersburg. Both are done to perfection and have a hint of history. The John Allison Public House, named for a patriot active in the American struggle for independence, stands solidly with Benjamin Franklin, another patriot, who said, “Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants to see us happy.” John Allison Public House offers 18 rotating taps with the best in craft beers, plus Tuesday evening is for members of the Beer Club.

Flannery’s Tavern in Mercersburg, the sibling restaurant of the John Allison Public House, also offers Beer Club on Thursday evenings.

Located in the center of Mercersburg’s historic district, Flannery’s Tavern is a treat for history lovers.

It is the former home and general store of town leader William McKinstry.

The 1810 stone walls and period fireplaces set an inviting atmosphere.

Looking for simply good food and good value? Then, Johnny’s Family Restaurant in Chambersburg and Path Valley Family Restaurant in Spring Run are two of the best. Johnny’s Family Restaurant serves breakfast lunch and dinner. It is good food, the service is friendly, and the check fits a budget. Owners John, Helen and family take pride in wholesome fresh food and work hard to make their customers happy. For dessert, try the rice pudding. At the Path Valley Family Restaurant, located in the small community of Spring Run at the crossroads of Route 641 and Route 75, is a local favorite. Locals know! Off the Willow Hill exit of the PA Turnpike, it is a good stop for lots of homestyle cooking--open-faced sandwiches, chicken and waffles, burgers and fries, and broasted chicken.

The Flamingo Restaurant in Fayetteville is not far from the Appalachian Trail and is a great stop for breakfast with homestyle meals served throughout the day.

Breakfast is served Monday through Saturday at 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM on Sunday.

The Chambersburg Family Diner is 24/7 and has a huge menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Plus, it is an easy stop off I-81, Exit 16. It is good diner food and fast service.

Pat & Carla’s Italian Eatery has great subs, salads, pizza, and pasta entrees.

Treat yourself to some special local favorites! Turn back time and visit the Waynesburger in downtown Waynesboro. Named for the signature burger, it is a big one with seasoning, lettuce, tomato, onions, and melted cheese on a sesame seed bun. Plus, try a milkshake; there are 51 flavors.

Maria and Sal ‘s on Lincoln Way East in Fayetteville is close to the Fayetteville Antique Flea Market, so it is a great spot to grab lunch when out for an afternoon of antiquing. All the bread is homemade and fresh, so the subs are outstanding.

Mim’s Mighty Meaty Hoagies, on West Main Street in Fayetteville, is another treat for sub-lovers. Mim’s has lots of variety--country fried ham hoagie,

ultimate cheeseburger hoagie, or steak & bacon burger hoagie.

In the Fort Loudon area, the Milky Way is a local favorite. It is a wonderful piece of Americana. The shrimp basket or the finger chicken basket comes with a choice of chips or fries, coleslaw or applesauce, and a buttered dinner roll. Milky Way also has soft-serve ice cream and milkshakes, so dessert is a must.

Spring is just around the corner when Twin Kiss opens for the season. Twin Kiss is an old-fashioned snack shack with things like steamers, chili dogs, and ice cream--vanilla, chocolate, or twist cones with a choice of jimmies, sprinkles, or dippedin-chocolate. Outdoor seating is nice and shady with a small brook winding past the picnic tables.

Plus, there is an arcade and on the other side of the brook, are several deer. Families love Twin Kiss, especially after a hot day. It is refreshing fun.

The Igloo on Route 11 in Chambersburg is a tried and true favorite, serving homemade ice cream since 1950. It offers cones, sundaes, shakes, floats, and banana splits. The grapenut ice cream is the best!

Treasure Hunting A Different Way Franklin County blends national, regional, and local stores. Craft enthusiasts are drawn to Hobby Lobby on Route 30--Lincoln Highway in Chambersburg. A favorite regional department store is Bon Ton at the Chambersburg Mall, I-81, Exit 20. Kohl’s Department Store in the Gateway Shopping Area off I-81 is a popular shopping spot.

New in 2016: get local art from The Foundry art coop in downtown Chambersburg.

Add in the Main Street shops of Franklin County’s downtowns , and it all equals great shopping.

Auctions, antiquing, consignment and thrift shops are great fun and different every time.

Gateway Gallery Auction, located off Exit 14 of I-81, concentrates on live auction sales of estates, specialty antiques and collectibles. It has 10,000 square feet in three showrooms. Auctions are typically the first and third Monday of the month. Kenny’s Auction, on Route 11 in Chambersburg, is a favorite of auction enthusiasts. Auction day is Friday.

Thrift and consignment shops are another way to find great treasure. 2nd Hand Sally’s Couture Consignment Boutique, 1055 Lincoln Way East, takes what is old and makes it new. Plus, it is a great way to clean out your closet!

Act II Consignment, 5248 Molly Pitcher Highway, is another great shop. Good things at good prices. In Greencastle, check out Upscale Consignment on Franklin Street with lots to see and always more on the way. On the square, in Mercersburg, visit The Dressing Room for clothing and home decor.

Shopping recycled is good for the environment and the money generated also can help a good cause. Two examples of thrift shops where proceeds benefit a cause are New Life Thrift Shop, 39 Warm Spring Road in Chambersburg and Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter Thrift Shop on South Main Street in Chambersburg and King Street in Shippensburg.

Antique hunters will find Franklin County offers an array of “hidden treasurers.”

Fayetteville Antique & Flea Market, 3653 Lincoln Way East, has three hundred dealers in four buildings and is open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily.

The Collectors Dream, 6150 Lincoln Way East, has a large selection of glass and china, including Depression and Carnival Glass, pottery and stoneware. Also offered are tin ware, sports memorabilia, furniture and coins.

Black Rose Antiques & Collectibles, located in the Chambersburg Mall at Exit 20/Black Gap Road, is the newest addition to antiquing in Franklin County.

With 174 booths, it is open daily—Mon.-Thurs., 10 AM-8 PM; Fri.- Sat. 10 AM9PM, and Sun. Noon-5 PM. Greencastle Antique Mall, 345 South Washington Street, offers about 125 dealers in 15,000 sq. ft. I-81, EXIT 5 (WEST) Mercersburg is the boyhood home of 15th president James Buchanan. The Main Street remains strikingly similar to the days when Buchanan played outside his father’s general store,. Potato Lovers Wanted!

Franklin County is home to two potato-loving businesses, Bender Farms and Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe.

Bender Farms

Bender Farms, a hometown and regional favorite, has been growing Chambersburg potatoes since the early 1900s. Available year-round, these potatoes are grown in shaley loam soil, which potato lovers say gives Benders potatoes a buttery taste. A key to Benders potatoes’ flavor is freshness. A locally-grown product travels an average of 56 miles from farm to destination, according to the farm. Benders potatoes taste better because they haven’t been shipped in and out of warehouses.

Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe

Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe connects with potato lovers in a different way: potato rolls. These sweet, buttery, golden rolls come in all shapes and sizes: sandwich rolls, long rolls, dinner rolls, whole wheat potato bread, and cinnamon-raisin swirl potato bread, just to name a few. First made in the kitchen of Lloyd and Lois Martin in the 1950s, the business grew and they turned the family garage into a bakery. Today, the company ships potato rolls all over the world.

Spread the mixture on 4 slices of Martin’s Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Potato Bread and top each with one of the remaining slices of raisin bread.

Beat the eggs and milk together. Melt the butter in the skillet. Dip each filled sandwich into the egg mixture and place in pan. Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top of each sandwich. Brown in the skillet and serve with butter, syrup, or fresh fruits.

Roy Pitz Brewery calls its beer liquid art. It is the culmination of years of refining the craft of beer making. Founders Ryan Richards and Jesse Rotz grew their passion from a college pursuit to a fullfledged brewery in a 1900s rehabilitated industrial building. Today, more than 20 employees brew, bottle, and distribute more than 20 varieties of beer in PA, MD, DC, and WV. All brews are unfiltered and unpasteurized. JANUARY-FEBRUARY Just as a sleepy Punxsutawney Phil prepares to prognosticate the next six weeks of weather, Chambersburg is wide awake, and IceFest is in full-swing. The four-day event includes over seventy-five ice sculptures, many backlit in wonderful color, giant statue carving, giant ice slide, a snowfall ball chili cook-off, ballet at the historic Capitol Theatre, art exhibit at the Council for the Arts, and photos in the giant ice throne. What is that sweet, buttery smell? Kettle corn…popped fresh and hot on Memorial Square. Downtown merchants extend store hours. So, if it gets chilly, duck inside, look around, and warm up. By February, it is easy to go stir crazy. An evening out at A Night At The Races at Green Grove Gardens, [off I-81, Exit 5] is a fun fix. Wine Swine & Roses is a weekend festival at Conococheague Institute in rural Mercersburg. With the Tuscarora Mountains

Historic downtown Mercersburg--boyhood home of 15th U.S. President James Buchanan, welcomes warm weather and longer days with Springfest, the second Saturday of May. in downtown Chambersburg is the last Saturday in June. Regional performers vie for a chance to win $500 first prize and perform before the 1864 Burning on the third Saturday of July. Pure harmonies and acoustic instruments make this a oneof-a-kind evening of entertainment and excitement.

Mountaintop Heritage Days Weekend, typically centered around the last weekend of June. Mountain Heritage Days commemorates the significant Civil War history that took place in the four separate counties in two different states-Franklin and Adams Counties in PA, and Washington and Frederick Counties in MD. After defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered southern troops to retreat from Pennsylvania to the Potomac River. Drenching rains, lightning, and thunder made the retreat in the darkness of July 4, 1863 a daunting task.

Confusion abounded, and the ensuing Battle of Monterey Pass became the second largest battle fought on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. Activities are held in Blue Ridge Summit, PA and Fort Ritchie in Cascasde, MD and include a mixture of fun, entertainment, and living history education and demonstrations. Be sure to visit the Battle of Monterey Museum, along Route 16.

JULY Walk Back In Time at Renfrew Museum & Park, 11 AM to 4 PM, takes visitors to colonial America on the first Saturday of July. Transport to colonial American and experience life on a Pennsylvania German farmstead.

Summer Jubilee is a patriotic festival held each summer in Waynesboro PA to celebrate the 4th of July. The day begins with a 5K run, parade in the morning, and concludes with fireworks at dusk.

On Saturday, 9 AM to 4 PM, the streets of downtown Chambersburg transform into an oldfashioned street festival called Old Market Day with more than a hundred vendors of original arts and crafts plus a variety of food and entertainment. In 2016, the Franklin County Old jail is the site of Roy Pitz Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em Party in the jailhouse yard, Noon to 6 PM. As Old Market Day, time shifts to the Civil War era with living history, re-enactments, booksignings, civil war walking tours, a period fiddler, old-fashioned photos, and a kids area with fun and games, plus glow-in-the-dark face and body painting for kids and adults.
