e’re now in the summer months with half the year already behind us. By now, most of us thought the markets would have been improving and be more on their way to recovery. Reality is that they continue to wax and wane, near or at the bottom, with no clear signs of change for the better. NCHBA is hard at work to bring relief from costly and unnecessary regulations and programs to help with the recovery of the home building industry.

Membership Drive

We held a very successful membership drive in May, which you can read more about on page 9. To further assist our local HBAs, NCHBA is providing monetary assistance to the vast majority of our local HBAs who elect to enroll members in NAHB’s Touch program.This membership retention program sends very professional pieces of correspondence, membership Daleure certificates, brochures and emails—17 “touches” in all—at a cost that is less than the postage required to send them. Golfers raise $13,200 for scholarships

olfers teed off under a beautiful sunny sky April 29 at Bryan Park Golf Club to raise money for the North Carolina Home Builders Educational & Charitable Foundation Inc., which provides scholarships for students entering the building industry. The Builders Classic Golf Tournament, sponsored by Builders Mutual Insurance Co., turned out to be another big success this year as 86 golfers helped raise over $13,200 for the foundation. Taking home first place honors was the Pegram-West team of Larry Ferguson, Hugh Gill, Mike Gill and Connie Johnson. Second place honors went to the Brad D. Cummings Construction Co. team of Brad Cummings, Tony Fish, Michael Rhodes and Keith Thomas. Marty Needham, NCHBA Regional Vice President and Surry Co. HBA Local President, was the winner of the President’s Cup, a competition among former and current local, state or national HBA presidents. His team members were Grant Chilton, Kevin McCallister and Dwayne Shelton. The foundation would like to thank the many companies that helped support this event through contributions of door prizes, gift bag items and hole sponsorships. First- and second-place teams won gift certificates to the pro-shop at Bryan Park. The festivities began Thursday evening with a BBQ “Pig-nic” Cook-off sponsored by Builders Mutual Insurance Co. Robert Privott, Larry Airey and Danny Brafford squared off to earn the prize of top chef. Attendees cast monetary “votes” for the best BBQ, which raised an additional $280 for the scholarship program. Larry Airey was voted the winner and took home the metal flying pig trophy.

NCHBA News Second NCHBA Membership Drive Nets 366 New Members Member Elected to NAHB Leadership Position in North Carolina Kevin Kelly, a Delaware builder and developer with more than 30 years of experience in the building industry, was elected as the 2011 Third Vice Chairman of the Board during the 2011 International Builders’ Show. Kelly, president of Leon N. Weiner & Associates Inc., is also a long-standing member of the HBA of Raleigh Wake Co. Kelly joins fellow NCHBA member Rick Judson as a senior officer of NAHB. Congratulations Kevin!

Local HBAs in North Carolina called in 366 new member pledges on National Membership Day May 24. NAHB reports that 3,432 new member pledges were called in overall during the campaign. Across all membership categories North Carolina represented just over 10 percent of the national total. In terms of just builder and associate members, North Carolina represented 9.59 percent of the national total, finishing only behind Texas for the highest percentage. The membership breakdown is as follows: 289 builders and associates, 56 affiliates, 16 Sales and Marketing Council, and five Remodelers Council members. Thank you again to everyone who worked hard to make this incredibly important day so successful for our association and our industry.

by Lisa Martin, Director of Government Affairs embers of the North Carolina Home Builders Association visited with the N.C. General Assembly June 7-8 as part of NCHBA’s annual Legislative Conference in Raleigh. It was an extremely busy time down at the General Assembly, as the meeting was held just days before the “crossover deadline.” Generally, any non-appropriations bills that have not passed at least one chamber of the General Assembly by the crossover deadline cannot be considered again until the start of the next legislative long session in 2013. Luckily, our members were able to schedule meetings with their legislators during the morning of June 8 amidst the flurry of activity in the Legislative Building. The previous evening, we had a well-attended reception in honor of legislators at the North Carolina Museum of History. Among the NCHBA legislative priorities that members discussed: • Reforming general contractor licensing law to end abuse of homeowner exemption • Ending development moratoria abuse • Limiting zoning design and aesthetic controls by local governments • Workers’ compensation reform • Tort reform • Regulatory reform At the time of this writing, the 2011 “long session” is close to adjournment. Look for a recap of the 2011 Legislative Session in an upcoming issue of North Carolina Builder magazine. The following pages show a “snapshot” of our NCHBA Legislative Conference. ur industry continues to face tough times. For the past few years, NCHBA members have struggled to hang on to their businesses and make a living building homes for the citizens of our state. Thankfully, North Carolina’s home building industry has fared much better than other parts of the country and many economists believe the worst is behind us. In September, the North Carolina Home Builders Association will host the 21st Century Building Expo & Conference Sept. 14-16 at the Charlotte Convention Center.This event is one of the most important benefits we offer our members. Educational Conference The 21CBEC offers the best educational conference in the Southeastern United States with more than 50 courses and seminars being offered over three days. These cutting-edge NCBI, NAHB, and general session courses will be taught by experts who will provide information that will be useful in helping you survive. Many of these instructors have presented these same courses at the International Builders Show and at other events across the country. A few highlights of the educational conference include: • Green Building for Building Professionals and Basics of Building will be offered for those of you interested in earning your Certified Green Professional designation. With over 500 builders in North Carolina holding the designation, it is one of the most popular and useful designations available. These are the only courses required for the designation. • Two courses for the increasingly popular Certified Aging-inPlace Specialist designation will also be offered: Marketing and Communication Strategies for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS1) and Design/Build Solutions for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS2). • The Full Delegate registration for just $85 allows you to take any of our more than 25 general session seminars. Topics include energy efficiency, marketing strategies, social media, remodeling and more.
