CARING
2
Caring for people. It’s an ancient Jewish tradition and one very much alive in our community. With the help of people from all walks of life, your Jewish Federation improves the quality of life for those in need while nurturing and sustaining Jewish identity for future generations. It’s one of the ways a Jewish community grows and celebrates. And it’s how you can make a world of difference right here in Greater New Haven, right now.

ISRAEL AND OVERSEAS
“Whoever practices charity and justice fills the world with loving-kindness.” B. Talmud Sukkah 49b
ALMOST EVERYONE HAS HEARD OF THE ANNUAL CAMPAIGN BUT NOT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT IT IS -- AND HOW IT IS PROBABLY ALREADY PART OF THEIR LIFE. People who exercise at the JCC or belong to
synagogues are beneficiaries of the Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign. So are the recipients of many social and educational services that shape our Jewish neighborhoods and community.
countless lives are saved, cared for, reached out to and rebuilt. It is one important way in which centuries-old Jewish traditions and values are celebrated -- and preserved for future generations.
EVERY YEAR, THROUGH THE ANNUAL CAMPAIGN,
our highest priority is helping people in financial crisis feed their families, pay their rent and get back on their feet. With your help, the Annual Campaign continues to ensure that Jewish life is sustained here at home, in Israel and overseas. DURING THESE DIFFICULT ECONOMIC TIMES
WITH ONE GIFT, YOU CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE in many of the
causes that are important to you - all at once. That’s the beauty of community-based giving: wherever the need is greatest, we can respond to it thanks to donations from people like you. For more information about making a gift to the 2012 Annual Campaign, please contact Andy Sarkany: 203 387-2424, x301 or esarkany@ jewishnewhaven.org. Our website address is www.jewishnewhaven.org.

Our Federation agency partners provide a variety of services to the frail and elderly in our community.
OUT OF WORK, BUT FULL OF HOPE
365 DAYS A YEAR, in every corner of our community, Federation provides food, shelter, medicine, emergency assistance, crisis counseling and support to the most vulnerable among us. And despite increased costs and escalating demand, our network of partner agencies continue to do more with less.
So when Ken found himself unemployed, Federation was there to help. In a downtown office building not far from his home, Ken began attending Federation funded programs designed for unemployed businessmen like him. “You realize that you’re in good
company with other very smart, accomplished, successful businessmen who have found themselves out of luck during hard times.” Now, more optimistic about the future, Ken says “Federation kept me connected with other positive, likeminded Jews. It just makes you feel like you’re not alone.”

EDUCATION
Education has long been one of the most cherished values in Jewish life. It is the backbone of our people and our success. Your Federation supports Ezra Academy, SCHA, the Jewish High School of Connecticut and the Hebrew High School of New England, all highlyrated Jewish day schools. For the last 30 years we have also operated the in-house Center for Jewish Life and Learning. CJLL provides programs, events and activities for everyone from infants to teens; it also produces special events for adults such as a Jewish film series.

JEWISH IDENTITY
There’s a renewed passion and enthusiasm for being Jewish in today’s world. Federationsponsored MASA and Birthright Israel trips have inspired more than 300,000 young Jews to grow deeper roots in Jewish life and learning.
Camp Laurelwood, another of our partner agencies, and the JCC’s summer day camp, continue to help thousands of young Jews make lifelong friendships and absorb Jewish values – all while having fun!
With support of the Hillels at UConn and the Slifka Center at Yale, Federation helps young Jews find community and strengthen their Jewish identity. Our New American Acculturation Program is dedicated to helping Russian immigrants discover their Jewish heritage in a free society.

Federation reaches out to young Jews, offering unique opportunities to celebrate Jewish life from generation to generation.
BOOKS HELP BUILD A HOME
We’re committed to helping people connect to Judaism in personally meaningful ways. This could mean attending one of our Jewish day schools or joining the JCC. Or, it could mean reading Jewish books. Lauren, who is Jewish, lives with her husband Mike, who is not, and their young daughter, Madeline. “My concern,” says Lauren, “was, how are we going
to raise our child Jewish when I needed to educate my child as well as my husband? Mike didn’t really understand that it’s not just a religion.” Enter the PJ Library, a children’s literacy project that delivers Jewishthemed picture books to subscribers’ homes each month, free of charge. One of the unanticipated benefits of the program is
its impact on a parent who was not brought up in our tradition. “It’s a beautiful introduction to Judaism for my child and for my husband,” Lauren says. PJ Library is open to all children ages six months to eight years. There are regularly scheduled story hours and other activities throughout the year.

EMERGENCY RELIEF
IN THE AFTERMATH OF IRENE ...WITH SO MANY PEOPLE WITHOUT POWER AND WATER, the Federation opened the JCC building to anyone who needed relief from the storm. We provided a temporary ‘home’ for anyone who needed it, including free access to showers and toilet facilities, wifienabled sitting and study areas - and the comfort of community. But helping the needy isn’t limited to Greater New Haven. When any corner of our world is in crisis, Federation has the experience and the resources to quickly and effectively provide life-saving assistance.

ISRAEL & OVERSEAS
ALL OVER THE WORLD WHEREVER JEWS LIVE, Federation and our partners are actively helping to make the world a better place. ...IN AN ABSORPTION CENTER IN Afula, our Partnership 2000 sister city, olim newly arrived from Ethiopia are settling into their first home in Israel. With help from the Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel, Federation helps new Israelis learn Hebrew as well as essential skills for coping in modern Israeli society, from using kitchen appliances for the first time to navigating the public school system. ...IN A TINY APARTMENT IN KIEV, eight elderly Ukrainian Jews gather each week to share stories and songs over tea and snacks. They live on pensions so small they might starve without our help, but we do more than provide food and medicine for them. We give them the chance to be part of a “Warm Home program that creates a feeling of community and fights isolation.
