Canada is one of the world’s most ethnically diverse countries and is home to more than 200 distinct ethnic groups, yet visible minorities make up only 5% of senior management in large Canadian companies and less than 2% of executive management in the public sector. The current status of women in business is similar and representation of women on boards has remained at the 20% level for a number of years. Many organizations appear to have a wide untapped pool of talent at their disposal but still struggle to address diversity. FEI Canada Frank S. Capon Distinguished Service Award RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE FEI Canada is pleased to honour Karyn Brooks as the recipient of the 2014 Frank S. Capon Distinguished Service Award. This award honours Frank S. Capon, who was an outstanding FEI Canada member for 57 years, and was credited with bringing FEI to Canada in 1948. Join your fellow members and toast Karyn on Thursday, June 5 at 4:30pm in the exhibit hall (Peller Estates Ballroom C and D). Ms. Brooks is a very active FEI Canada member, taking on numerous leadership roles over the years. She was a member of FEI Canada’s national board of directors from 2004–2011, and served as Chair of the Board in 2009–10. Karyn demonstrated strong leadership during her tenure as Chair (and Vice and Past Chairs). During this time she led the strategic planning process, increased advocacy efforts and broadened the offerings of FEI Canada in thought leadership and professional development. She also served on the the Chapter Leadership Council, the audit and finance committee and the governance committee. A veteran member of the Committee on Corporate Reporting since 1988, Ms. Brooks served as chair of CCR from 2004–2006. As one of FEI Canada’s longest serving members of CCR, she frequently contributed to the task of 32

writing the responses that CCR issues when new accounting proposals or regulatory changes were issued. Karyn was appointed as FEI Canada’s representative on the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Advisory Council in London, UK from 2011–2014, which met quarterly to offer input to international standards setters. Her work on this Council contributed significantly to the enhancement of the FEI Canada brand. Ms. Brooks’ accomplishments outside FEI Canada include serving as a member of various committees, task forces and study groups of CPA Canada, the Accounting Standards Board, the Accounting Standards Oversight Council, and serving as a member of the IFRS Implementation Committee. Ms. Brooks is currently Chair of the Performance Reporting Board. In addition to her enormous contribution to FEI Canada and the profession, Ms. Brooks has had a stellar career in the business world, serving most recently as Senior Vice President and Controller of BCE and Bell Canada. for 11 years until she retired in 2014. Before that, Karyn worked as Vice President and Controller at Enbridge Inc. and held the same position at TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. Ms. Brooks, a graduate of Queen’s University, is a member of their board of trustees, chair of Queen’s audit committee and serves on the advisory board of the Queen’s School of Business.
