Identifying an issue or problem within the contemporary context Analyzing an architecture to identify a problem or solve a problem Solving an issue in a broader context outside of architecture: presenting a theory/manifesto Solving an issue within the context of architecture: presenting a design method Solving an issue within the context of architecture: presenting a theory Others:
Please complete the following: What are the issues addressed?
INTENTION vs. PERCEPTION The concept intended by the architect may be translated as ambiguous through the architecture and is perceived differently based on individual. OPPOSITION vs. ASSOCIATION Semiology can be achieved through contrast or by means of built up using metaphors. Over-reliance on either of the two methods might result in an unclear architectural language.
MULTIVALANCE vs. UNIVALENCE There is often a lack of continuity from form, function and technicality that result in a distorted image of what the intended concept was. In some cases, architects may place more emphasis in one area than the other due to cultural or contextual requirements. What are the design PURITY IN INTENTION methods/strategy/theories While the perception of the architecture differs from user to proposed? user, Ando is persistent in the essence of the architecture, relying heavily on the concept of Zen. The voids incorporated, to Ando, represents a divine fullness, while the imperfect finishes reflect the spirit of the Japanese wabi-sabi.
BALANCE IN DESIGN Designing with contradicting elements is simpler in its nature while designing with meaning and metaphors is infinitely complex and is made up of a multitude of layers. SINCERITY IN THOUGHT A sense of continuity will be achieved throughout the architecture, usage and materials will be achieved when the design is approached with honesty. By being sincere in intention, these components will align without being forced. Relate the text to architectural/urban forms by illustrating one key image.
Name : Church of Light Architect : Tadao Ando
Justify the selection.
JUSTIFICATION: INTENTION Tadao Ando created the Church of Light using large amounts of
voids and empty spaces as to him, this signifies a solitude that transcends the user to a spiritual level. However, users have remarked that the abundance of space is eerie, a contrast to what was intended by the architect.
MATERIALITY The widespread use of reinforced concrete removes the building from the distinction of traditional Christian motifs reinforces the point of designing through contradiction. The place of worship is void of ornaments, a stark difference to the traditional architecture of a church, with the crosses void in the east facing wall being the only prominent religious symbol present in the church. FORM RELATES TO FUNCTION The form of the building reflects the function in its simplicity. Devoid of ornaments, the L shaped entrance leads to a pure space of worship. It is clear that simplicity, humbleness and purity are elements repeated throughout its form and function. The simplicity of the architecture emphasizes the concept of sensation and physical experience and brings importance to the internal feeling rather than outward struggles.
