UGMAG3: INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS. WHO IS S. CHAMELEON? WE WANT TO KNOW THE PERSON BEHIND THE PEN. NOT A STEP BY STEP BREAK DOWN BUT A HEY MY NAME IS.. GET TO KNOW ME!
S. CHameleon: Hey world, I’m your girl S. Chameleon. I’m a wife and mother of two striving to accomplish all my goals. I live by the moto “Act Like a Lady Think Like a Boss”. Currently a writer of Urban Fiction but not limited to that one particular genre and I’m a lover of my craft. I’ve been writing for five years independently. I started with just my own personal projects then that grew into me starting my blog where I began writing raw uncut short stories @schameleonbooks.blogspot.com. After receiving such a large following with my blog I decided to try my hand at penning a full novel independently. I began researching to get the information that I needed locally to get my novel published as well as starting my new author page on face book and starting to connect with other authors in the industry. While in the process of publishing my first independent novel I was introduced to G Street Author NeNe Capri after which we spoke and I submitted information to her publishing company that’s an imprint under G Street Chronicles and was welcomed with open arms. At that time I put my personal project on hold and signed on with Boss Lady Publishing and now here I am. I’m a very outgoing and friendly individual that’s always looking to connect and I have a witty since of humor. USMAG3: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOUR STRENGTHS ARE IN YOUR WRITING STYLE? ARE YOU A STRONG CHARACTER BUILDER? SCENE BUILDER? PLOT MASTER?
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS STRENGTHENED AS YOU COMPLETE THE NEXT BOOK AND THE NEXT BOOK? WHAT WILL YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO WORK AT BECAUSE IT IS WHERE YOU THE MOST IMPROVEMENT? S. CHAMELEON: I believe my strength in my writing style is my diversity in my plots and storylines. Although “Devious Deception” is my first published Urban Fiction Novel, I also have an arsenal of other Novels that are in their premature stages of being written right now that are not Urban fiction that have complete different story lines that are full of diversity and are open to all walks of life. I try to create cunning scenes and stories so that my Chameleon’s (my readers) can actually put themselves directly in the reality of my novels. As far as being a strong character builder, I know that I am definitely strong in that area. As I’m building each character I like to give each character life. Each character having their own individual life and strong personality is very important for the readers to fill a part of the story. Since starting part 2 of “Devious Deception” I believe I had a clearer understanding of the literary craft. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t mastered it yet. I’m still learning every day. So most of all the creativity with my words has definitely strengthened. With me being a new author in the industry I was a little apprehensive with my word play in the beginning trying to be politically correct and trying to spare the rod. I had to realize, that I needed to let loose and relax my inner me onto my pages fully in order for my Chameleon’s to feel me one hundred percent and that’s exactly what I did. I began to feel so much better once I let go and began to release the inner Chameleon in me and different sides of my mental from my pen, and it’s made me so much stronger as a writer. I would say that I do have to continue to work on not telling too much too fast in my novels.
UGMAG3: WHEN WRITING A SERIES WE TEND TO FALL IN LOVE WITH ONE OF OUR CHARACTERS. WHO WOULD THAT BE FOR YOU AND WHAT MAKES THIS CHARACTER THE ONE WHO STANDS OUT IN YOUR HEAD THE MOST? S. CHAMELEON: The character in my story that stands out the most to me would have to be Savon. She initially didn’t start off as the main character in “Devious Deception”. She was actually the underdog of all the characters that grandfathered into the Dope girls crew, but she happen to always get the short end of the stick. As the story progressed, she began to regain her own strength and build back her confidence slowly but surely but not before making everyone that made her life a living hell pay for how horrible they made her feel during her trying time in life. She fell but got back up again, it may not have been in a positive way one hundred percent the way everyone would have wanted but she didn’t let the bullshit keep her down like some females would have. UGMAG3: A BOSS! YES! A BOSS LADY! NOW THAT YOU ARE SIGNED WITH BOSS LADY PUB SHARE WITH US A SOMETHING YOU LEARNED FROM NENE CAPRI THAT DEEMED TO BE MOST VALUABLE. S. CHAMELEON: I mean there are many things that I’ve learned from NeNe since being friends with her and being signed with Boss Lady Publishing. She definitely drops jewels all the time. If I just had to choose one main thing that would be learning and understanding the craft of writing and what it means to me as a writer and also what it means to my Chameleon’s as readers.

Our young adults are reading ore and more today with help from authors like Laqueisha Malone. Her voice is being heard through her poetry and being active in the community. She is a published poetess and author. At the very young age of_—— Laqueisha has set forth ion a journey to liven up the volume of our youth’s voices. She is utilizing her God gifted talents to serve as a tool to let our youth know that they are not alone. Her published works are an example of youthful pain and expression. We had a chance to get Laqueisha while she was networking on social network to answer a few questions…. UGMAG3: You are reaching out to Young Adults though your published work am I correct? Laqueisha: That's correct. I talk with the youth daily. Whether it's about my upcoming book Secrets Amongst Friends or encouraging them to find something positive to hold on to as it can aid in their quest for a happy future. I plan to re-introduce my Creative Writing Workshop into my community and hopefully the surrounding communities. UGMAG3:(Laquesisha is currently located in Rison, Arkansas) How hard has it been to get people in the community active in supporting literary programs? What have been some of your most complicated obstacles? Laqueisha: Wow. In my community it has been challenging, but I continue to show up. I am searching for different avenues to present my ideas to our youth. I believe strongly in reading and writing, and I want an outlet that exercises the youths minds. Some of my most complicated obstacles have been gaining support from businesses in the community. But I am working my plan of action to get the community more involved. UGMAG3: Would you like to elaborate on this? What are you asking of the community? Laqueisha: Sure. From the community I would like more support with fundraising for the material needed for the creative writing workshop, school participation, and space to provide the service. My community is a very small community, and I am researching ways to draw more attention as I believe this workshop could be beneficial to the youth...my surrounding cites are Pine Bluff, AR; Fordyce, AR; Sheridan, AR; Little Rock, AR; Camden, AR . UGMAG3:Your poetry is just the beginning of your journey... if we walked just a half a mile in your shoes how would we feel about Laqueisha?
You would feel connected. I am no different than the average person searching for love, have loved, have been loved, seeker of spiritual guidance, family-oriented, and hard working, and a dream catcher. UGMAG3: Tell us about your next book... Laqueisha: My next book Secrets Amongst Friends is about two teenage girls Naomi and Mya. Naomi is raised with strong Christian value, and Mya is raised with a workaholic mother. Both families have their share of secrets, but one secrets is more than the two girls can handle alone. Locksie is the Co-Founder and CFO of ARC Book Club Inc. She was born in London, England to Caribbean parents and lived there through her early twenties before migrating to New York. Locksie is an outspoken, vibrant mother and grandmother whom loves to read, travel, and dance. She is also known in literary circles for her honest but critical reviews, which for the last ten years has gained her respect with both readers and authors. After being asked to help with developmental editing by a number of authors, in 2012 Locksie took classes in copy editing and proofreading and now edits under the name, The Story Tailor. Always believing one should never forget their roots, she constantly travels between London, the Caribbean and New York where she now resides with her family. When you are one-clicking on Amazon is it the author’s weight (consistent years in the industry) that validates his worth (how much you will spend on an ebook) or is it his ability to win you over with his approach on social media?
What do you think will be the next industry craze for publishing, like e-books are for paperbacks? LOCKSIE: We had audio books long before ebooks became popular, so the only other thing would be to add digital content to books. That would be expensive though and probably the death of 99cent books, but I don’t know how popular it would be for serious readers.
LOCKSIE: I’m not an ebook fan at all, I prefer to buy physical books but I do purchase both. How much I spend follows my criteria of how much I enjoyed that author’s previous books. An author’s presence does play a part on whether I purchase their book or not. Within the last couple of years there have been some who disrespect readers and just act a fool, I don’t support foolishness. Authors are looking for readers…no readers, no sale so they should be mindful of how they treat readers. Consistent years in the literary industry means education, growth, promotion and crafting brands for many authors. Then there are a few who’ve been in the industry for a few years but don’t grow or do anything to raise the bar. I may spot an author who interacts well with the readers and supports other authors and if their book interests me I may buy their book. But if I do and I don’t enjoy the story I won’t buy another one. You are avid reader. How many books have you read in 2014? What are your top 5 choices? LOCKSIE: I read sixty-five books in 2014 which is a low number for me. With the popularity of 99cent books came a slew of un-edited books with weak storylines. I wasted time and money reading some of them, by the time 2014 hit I made a conscious decision to choose my reads wisely. I’d rather read less books with good quality writing and entertaining stories. Fortunately, I read some really good books in 2014 and have many I can recommend, here are five: “Branding Yourself for Success” by Deondriea Cantrice. “Open Door Marriage” by Naleighna Kai. “Looking For Trouble” by Trice Hickman. “Twisted Seduction” by N’Tyse.
Some authors are saying readers are spoiled and want everything for nothing. They rush your work and then are unwilling to pay for it. Do you have a defense for these accusations? LOCKSIE: Wow! Those are serious accusations. I pay for all my books, unless a book is sent for a review. Seasoned readers, BUY books and are looking for substance in the stories they read. Again, along with 99cent ebooks came a new breed of readers and I’m not knocking anybody down. But what I will say is it’s up to those authors who feel this way to seek out respected readers and reviewers to read their books and provide professional feedback. Name a book from 2014 that didn’t get the shine it deserved: LOCKSIE: “The Majestic Dynasty” by Lorretta R. Walls. Ms. Walls is a fantastic storyteller! She’s able to pull her readers in and take them on a reading journey that may cross the Atlantic and back. And you can be sure to meet some interesting characters that will seduce you into their lives and make you wanna step into their world every chance you get. Ms. Walls also has a humble presence on her social media site, she is supportive of her peers, respectful of her readers and eager to perfect her craft. Name a book that just dropped in 2015 that has your one-click finger itchy: LOCKSIE: LOL! A few of my favorite authors are dropping books for this year. But one that will be out in about two months that I’m really looking forward to is “Boss, Part 2 The Baptiste Family Novella Series.” By Brian W. Smith I read part one when it came out back in November and I loved it! Website/Links:

When a woman's fed up..., December 30, 2014 Co-workers, Stephanie and Kevin are best friends. She is married and he has a live-in baby mama, both are comfortable enough with each other to share the highs and lows of their relationships. Working and having lunch together almost every day has resulted in a deep respect for each other, but unfortunately for Kevin, he has fallen deep in love with Stephanie. When Stephanie’s marriage starts to crumble, Kevin is there to hold Stephanie’s hand while she vents and eventually starts cheating on her husband. To Kevin’s dismay it’s not with him… A well written plot, I only wish it was about fifty pages longer. I have enjoyed previous books by Marlon McCaulsky, his talent for crafting a story is always evident between the pages. Bad Girl, is a good story if you’re looking for a short read. There were noticeable errors concerning the action and dialogue tags.
A Let’s Talk Urban Project
Ingredients:
A drama filled, emotionally charged, suspenseful mystery novel 1 gallon of orange juice 12 full hours of Kanye West, Eminem, and J. Cole music 3 cups of originality 3 cups of passion 1 and a half cups of insanity 1 unique wife to reference 1 author who’s willing to thin outside the box Instructions: When writing Malicious Intent, I began with a cup of orange juice to get the creativity flowing in my head. With my iPhone earbuds plugged into my computer, I tuned into Spotify to my “When iWrite” playlist that’s filled with songs from Kanye, Eminem, and J. Cole. Beginning with my unique wife as my reference point for “Errica,” I began to weave a tale that would take readers on a ride they hadn’t been on before. In a mixing bowl, I mixed in the originality, the passion, the insanity, and occasionally the orange juice for flavor. Throughout the process, watch the ingredients carefully, as if not cooked at just the right temperature, the mixture can tend to taste like everyone else’s work. At the end, take the masterpiece out of the oven, kick back with another glass of orange juice, and enjoy.
Watch Your Mouth! PUSSY. FUCK. BITCH. HOE. Got your attention? I’m sometimes left scratching my head over some of the titles being dropped on books today. Things is, for those who purportedly take the craft seriously, and are allowing books with such denigrating titles to be splashed on the cover of their books, I wonder what goals a person like that truly has in when it comes to the business they’re in. Okay, you’re at your high school’s graduation ceremony as a guest speaker because of your success and the master of ceremony is introducing you as a well-known Writer. How many Authors would be comfortable having their books’ titles read aloud? Would one really be comfortable with the announcer saying, “Author such and such has six publications in circulation, the most recent is, If He Says I’m A Hoe I Might As Well Be A Good Hoe”? Not appropriate for speaking out in public, in my humble opinion. What would people in the audience say? And how would the Author feel about that title being read openly? Would it even get read out loud?
The thing is, we’re doing the genre and ourselves a disservice with some of the titles we’re producing. We’re dumbing down the audience, those who may have only recently started reading and believe this is the way a book should always be written, and we’re harming ourselves as we receive no genuine criticism for some of the things we should be held accountable for, such as editing, and plot and character development. Eyes are everywhere; and those higher up in the business are always looking for the next big thing—but when we belittle our own genre, degrade our own market with profanity, the selling of sex, and taking books that were written on Tuesday and uploading them on Wednesday without bringing them through the proper steps of editing just to make money, cracks start to form in the dam. I’d rather see the cup run over with success instead of being eroded from the inside out, which is the slow fate of Urban Literature today with the market becoming saturated with poorly written books by some who only see dollar signs. Some may not see it, or say, “Nah, I’m good over here. It ain’t my problem.” Truth is, it’s everyone’s problem—from the reader, to the reviewer, to the editor, and lastly, the Author him or herself. We all have something to lose in this matter. If you can, envision a neighborhood that was once prosperous, booming with business and heavy activity. Stores were open every day; sales were being made in clothing and furniture stores, just an all-out success. Even people from other neighborhoods came through to make purchases. That was Urban Literature at its height and inception.
Take that same neighborhood and let those businesses start selling subpar material. Now, the people who used to visit no longer come around. Business starts slowing down. Those who were there from the very beginning, during the neighborhood’s heyday, they will hang on, because they love the businesses and what they have to offer and they remember the golden ages. Each time they make a purchase now, however, they tell themselves, “Okay I got burned slightly last time. This time I know I’ll get my money’s worth.” When that customer gets their product home and gets burned again, reluctance sets in. They become skeptical over their next purchase and start to look at all of the businesses in the neighborhood with a wary eye as they recognize the change, and are more selective on when, where and how they spend their money. We Authors are like those businesses that are starting to fledge. Before the neighborhood ever enters into a downward spiral, however, new customers of working age appear on the scene and they have money to spend. The sellers of bad product barely even noticed the drop and its business as usual because the new spenders have only known the subpar material. Such is the state of Urban Literature in some aspects; but this is not all our fault entirely. How this trend came about, I don’t think no one really knows. One thing is certain, it is here to stay, and the only way to combat the issue is to hold Authors accountable for titles that offend and degrade and substandard material.
Some may say, “What’s the difference between what’s on the outside and the inside? A hoe is hoe no matter what the title.” Well, it’s how the story is being told. There’s no denying the fact that there are some excellent books written with profanity in their titles—runaway successes that have the veterans scratching their heads and calling for a reset on the game. They want to point out certain Authors or publishing companies for what they do and how they do it; but numbers don’t lie when it comes to that matter so it’s a nonissue. And to downplay the success of some of the titles is doing a disservice as some are truly well-written books with a storyline and characters that the readers love to follow. These particular reads can’t be classified with books bought on a bandwagon—it’s a totally different concept and a manipulation of the numbers, which is an atrocity to the genre. The last thing I want to say about this is that this trend didn’t start with African American Authors, and we’re not the only ones writing these types of books. Take a look at the book titled The Bitch, written by Jackie Collins (who’s sold over 500,000,000 million books and has had her work published in over 40 different languages if we’re talking genuine success) and published in 1979.

Felisha: So, The Mack is back huh? We’ve missed you! Your show was climbing the list of best BlogTalk shows last year. You have had some of the most controversial shows with a positive vibe! You got to the bottom of hearsay, allowed authors with beef or with weight on their chest to clear the air and state what’s really real and have had some great guests. What happened? Was it overwhelming? Where did the Mack go? The Mack Mama: Thank you very much, I feel like I brought realism, spontaneity and excitement to all of my radio shows. I get bored easily and to be honest that’s why I don’t do regular shows. I haven’t lost my touch it’s enough blog talk shows that offer interviews. I can disappear and swoop back in once in a while, when there is a need for a MACK attack. Felisha: They say you can’t hold a god woman down. Yu made it clear that its damn near impossible. What can listeners look forward to in 2015 from The Mack Mama Show? What controversial yet informative shows can we prepare our ears for? The Mack Mama: In 2015 I will be releasing several books that are long awaited. “Mistress” which is the sequel to “Daisy Jones” and “Lessons from and Original Bad Girl” which is the follow up to my autobiography “Tales of an Original Bad Girl” As far as shows I will probably do an “Air it out segment” once a week. Felisha: As I stated in the first question you have head some greats on your show. Is there an author that you have yet to get on the Mack Mama Show? Why this author? What would be your first question? I want to interview Lil Mo and ask her what made her publish her book with “Next Level Publishing” opposed to a more mainstream company. I love the fact that she chose an Indie company that is notable. I happen to respect the owner Dashawn Taylor a great deal and want to hear about how he is helping her literary career. Felisha: Like e-books are the evolution to reading paperbacks, live streaming will soon be the evolution to internet radio. Would you ever consider going live in a talk show setting for video streaming? I definitely will be doing live streaming. I feel more confident about my image now, so I wouldn’t mind being more visual. I used to feel a lil insecure about my weight gain, but after having breast reduction surgery, I’m ready to be seen and heard. I finally feel fabulous again. When your on that internet, people will critique you and it can become distracting, so if you give them something pleasant to view, maybe it will attract positive comments. Felisha: How can authors and readers get in touch with you for a speaking engagement or interview on the MACK MAMA Show? I can be contacted via email mackmama1@gmail.com also, my books can be purchased anywhere ebooks are sold. I have an erotic series called Goddess written under Mackalicious. Also my music can be downloaded from Itunes and Amazon. Visit www.starstatuspublishing.com www.mackmamamentor.com www.mackmamaworld.com Follow me on twitter @MackMama and Instagram @mackmama1. thug who grew up in the projects of Los Angeles, California, a killer by day and night, Zaire Pearson never knew he had a soft side until he met and fell in love with Beautee Hill- a hardworking, educated black girl from the suburbs of Pasadena, California. She was a beauty that was by far different then the project hoodrats that Zaire was used to dealing with. Being the beast that he was, Zaire was definitely in need of a "Beautee" to tame his wild side. Beautee knew that meeting Zaire was no accident. She was intentionally placed in his path with an agenda. She knew that not many men could resist her beauty or booty. As an undercover FBI agent, Beautee was out to gain freedom for her husband, who is a rival gang member that has been set up by Zaire and wrongly accused of murder. Author Kai Storm is a new face in the Urban Literary world, has brought us shining jewels called Alani’s Bigger Hustle & Alani’s Hustle Gets Bigger. Kai was born in Panama in 1972 and came to New York in 1981 with her mother. She discovered her writing gift as a junior at Boys & Girls High School when an English teacher gave her an assignment to develop a story from just one paragraph and since then, her pen was hot. Thru the years, Kai continued to write any and everything not only to keep her gift alive but also for therapeutic reasons, either way her pen and paper kept her sane. In December 2007, Kai was working at a hospital as a temp and even though the assignment was over the first week of December the hospital kept her on for two more weeks just so that she would have money for Christmas presents but there was nothing for her to do during those two weeks so she decided to pen the first three chapters of Alani’s Bigger Hustle. Only after she submitted the first three chapters did she decide to write the rest of the book “just to see what I would do with it”, and when she pushed this out, it was nothing but fire!

After living a life filled with prostitution just to survive, Angelique was jealous and full of hate and when got a taste of Alani’s fortune. The Author: (The Game) What are the steps you took to get your work published? Originally, I did a bit of research so I would know how to proceed with getting it published. Once I found enough information, I moved forward to self-publishing. What strategies are you taking to brand SHADRESS DENISE? My main strategy is simply placing myself out there and letting people know who I am. I have been doing interviews, participating in various events, and going places that allow me to be in front of people and speak about my books. In addition to that I am creating a body of work that allows me to tap into different media outlets so that my name and work will expand beyond books. What is the #1 misconception about being an author? I would probably say one of the misconceptions would be that this is our full-time job. For some authors who are well-known writing is probably something they are able to do full-time since they have the fan base. Whereas, authors who are just starting out may need additional income until they build up the following.
Hailing from St. Louis, MO, Shadress Denise is an author, graphic designer, blogger and magazine columnist. She has been writing poetry and short stories for over 10 years. She has written five books of poetry (published one) and one novel. Disturbia; is a collection of letters & poems. Who Do You Love?; a erotic fiction novel and her latest novel SideChick Chronicles released 2-12-2015. Currently residing in St. Louis, Missouri, Shadress Denise is currently working on her book two of her series Who Do You Love. She has much more to come for 2015 so stay connected!
I
am.....enthralled in the profoundness of simplicity, lost in the waves of ecstasy, subdued by desire while beWhat are some of the big changes in the publishing indus- ing held captive try between the time you put out your first book Dis- by love's embrace turbia and Who Do You Love? I would have to say the promotion and marketing side of #thewriter everything. Finding new and creative ways to market #iamshadressdenise your product in an already saturated field so that you are able to stand out is the biggest challenge. I have found that I want to be different so the challenge is finding an avenue to plug into so that you are able to do it.
Shadress:(The Girl) What was 15 year old Shadress like? LOL….careless and rebellious! I was such a curious girl who loved to push the boundaries and see how far I could go before I got in trouble. I saw the world as a place to discover and be free in and I reveled in all of it. What would you tell her about love knowing what you know now? I would tell her it’s okay to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is natural and a way to grow. I wasn’t a vulnerable person and since I grew up with boys I saw relationships from a different perspective. I would tell myself that a woman’s heart is sacred and love is a part of growth. Can you give us a prediction on where Shadress Denise will be in 5 years? Wow, it’s hard to say without revealing everything. I would definitely say on the bestsellers list and in addition to that somewhere bringing my books to life whether in film or on stage. I love living outside of the box so trying new things will definitely be at the top of that list.
What do advice do you have for the 15 year old daughter about love or your 15 year old son about loving? Probably the same thing as my mother told me and my brothers. Love will come and go and as you get older you will encounter it more than once. Live your life and enjoy each and every moment. When it is your time everything will work out the way it should.
The Writer: (The Glamour) What is the most important character you’ve brought to life thus far? I would say all of my characters are important. Each one of them is taken from a piece of me and allows me to see myself on paper. All of my characters whether heroes or villains in the eyes of those who read them are parts of my personality that I wanted to bring to life in some way. What is it about this particular character that makes him or her stand out more so than any other? All of my characters stand out in their own way. Indigo stood out for her love and passion for Bodega and the constant struggles she had to fight through to get to the point she arrived at. On the other hand, Rylee was carefree, liberated and not interested in love on any level. With the other characters in my new book; The Sidechick Chronicles all of the women have a different platform that makes you sit on the edge of your seat. How has your upbringing and your environment influenced your writing? I had so many different personalities that surrounded me it allowed my creativity to evolve into what it is today. I have a very artistic family and being creative was encouraged regularly.
What have you learned about Shadress through your writing? What dreams have come to reality because of your writing? In regards to what I’ve learned about myself, I would say I am capable of anything I put my mind too. It’s funny how we say that out loud and yet there’s still this inkling of doubt that lingers in the back of our head. Putting myself out there and publishing my first book allowed me to push aside that voice and step into the light I was meant to stand in. When it comes to dreams, I would have to say being able to be on the radio and speak about my work is something I imagined but never really thought would come true. Also, I’ve always wanted to write for a magazine, so being able to fulfill that dream has also been a blessing in itself. Authors are always asked how did you become a writer but never why do you write. So tell us, why does Shadress write?
I write because I love doing it. When I was writing poetry, I did it because it was therapy and it allowed me to cleanse my spirit of the feelings that I may not have expressed to someone in particular. Writing has always been like singing to me, they are both second nature and they make me feel good when I’m doing it. You have gone from poetry (thoughts and feelings) to your first novel (making your thoughts and feelings happen) what was the process in writing poetry to writing books?
For me it’s the same process. Anyone who reads my poetry will see that from beginning to end each poem tells a story. I believe that’s how you draw the reader in and hold their attention. So with writing books, it wasn’t a huge difference.
Mmmm… Mmmm… Mmmm Erick! It’s been a few years since we’ve had the pleasure of sharing, chatting and updating. You were my first professional photoshoot for Urban Grapevine Magazine. And my photographers first magazine cover shoot. That was back in 2011, here we are again and you still remain a heavy hitter in the lit game. And also someone the people want to know more and more about. Not that many won’t know who you are but let’s introduce you to new readers. What’s going on Erick… KISS and TELL!
Erick S. Gray: Hey, everyone, yes, it’s been a minute since I did an interview, and people want to know more about me, I don’t think I’m that interesting, or maybe I am, lol.. Well, like most people know, I’ve moved to South Carolina, met someone, got engaged and we’re having a newborn baby, a daughter this March. I’m having another girl. Yup, my family is growing. J UGMAG3: You have a quote on Good Reads that reads: "Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby... If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit!" Erick S. Gray: Well actually, that Quote didn’t come from me, it was told to me by someone else. I liked it so much that I had to say it again, because it’s a true statement. And I posted it. UGMAG3: It was one of your most popular quotes. Do you still live by these words? Erick Gray: Yes, I do, wholeheartedly. Women are the key to life, they can give birth, we, us men, can’t. We can only donate, and they’ll take our donations and make something valuable out of it. My fiancée has helped me out a lot since I moved to the south, true story. Being with her, my eyes opened to a lot of things since being in this relationship. My pedigree was sketchy and risky. Real talk, I came into this relationship with some bullshit, and had a crazy past. You name it, I did it all, and I’m not proud of some of the things I did. But we can’t change the past, only look toward the future and pave a better road for ourselves, and praying that the road ahead isn’t as bumpy as the one we turned off from. And Sophia, she epitomize what that statement is all about…she turned my house into a home. When I buy groceries, she makes me a meal, and she can definitely cook! I gave her my smile and she gave me her heart, unconditionally, and yes, keeping it real, no lie… I gave her crap, too and believe me; I received a ton of shit. I don’t like shit, it stinks! I like the other things better, they smell sweeter. So, I try not to give out too much crap, lol.
UGMAG3: You know I have been a fan for a few years now. Most know that I found your work to be passionate and full of emotions, life and most of all true love. But I see you are bringing a new title to my shelf. I am eager to read the works of Erick S. Gray today! What has changed in Erick’s writing world?
Erick: Yes, I am, Gigolo is the new title to the book shelves. Its Erotica mixed with urban/street fiction, I’m not sure if it’s been done before, probably so, but I come with my own twist, from beginning to the end, this book will have you on your toes. What has changed in my writing, it’s what has changed inside of me. I’ve gotten better with the pen and with my life, seeing life differently and living differently. If you’re not changing, then you’re not growing. And I want to grow. I’m trying to break off into more contemporary story telling, talk more about relationships, love and life itself, and of course, blend that melodrama into the plot, lol. I still love telling street fiction, the hood stories, etc, but after a while, that stuff can become redundant, and the same cliché. I want to try something different, broaden my horizon in story telling. My life is about love, triumph, wisdom, and I want to right relationship books, a little Sci-fi, continue writing my poetry, because I love, and maybe a romantic comedy.
UGMAG3: You were a New Yorker for the majority of your writing life and if I must add a sex symbol in the Urban Fiction industry. Woman were coming at you left and right at your beckon call. In all the female dominated rooms all the talk behind the scenes were, “Erick this…”, “OMG! Erick that…” and the famous “Did you see the sexy pics he posted?” Then a few weeks or so later you were MIA. You even disappeared from social media for a second. I must say you have loyal friends because they would not spill the beans for nothing on your whereabouts. Yes there were rumors that you went into hiding to shoot a film. And a few that you went down under to write a book. Then rumors and guesses faded until the big #BOOM hit the social network and rumors of a woman surfaced and all hell broke loose. The ladies were devastated. And don’t get me wrong but I was like he’s whooped! But then I thought about your book One Lyfe to Live and said there is more to Erick than that. I knew it would take a great woman and not just an ordinary woman to capture more than just Erick’s eyes. To get her hooks in Erick S Gray she had to be a hellavah woman.
Enough of the rumor! Is there a woman? Let’s clear the air is…. Erick S. Gray taken? Erick: Yes, I’m TAKEN! I’m officially off the market, so no more sexy and shirtless pictures on Facebook, Twitter, Instragram, etc… sorry ladies, lol. But she is a great woman…a superwoman. And you’re right; it had to take a great woman to definitely change me. Believe me, I was a handful coming into this relationship. But, it will be three years in September this year since we been together. We met through a mutual friend, my cousin, inside the club. We had casual talk; I thought she was cute, she, looking all slim and curvy in that black dress she wore with her short, blonde hair. Yes, I still remember what she had on that night. She didn’t believe me when I told her that I was a published writer. Even though we were introduced, she thought I was bullshit and it was a pick-up line. You know I had to show and tell. Before I left the club, I had to give her a book and sign my name in it, leaving a little something extra inside, like my phone number.
I didn’t think she was going to call me. I remember it was Tuesday night when we met. She called me the next afternoon. I was shocked, but also happy. We went out that afternoon; it was a nice afternoon date. I can still remember every detail of that day. That was one of the best days of my life. We drove around Greenville, just chilling and talking. We went to this modest lounge in the area, had a few drinks and talked and laughed. Her conversation was engaging. She was smart and intelligent. UGMAG3: What captured your heart? Could this be the future Erick S. Gray? Erick: She’s already the future Mrs. Gray. But everything I said before is what captured my heart. She was beautiful, and she still is. I got hit hard with cupid’s arrow—like it came out of nowhere, and I was like, WTF! Where this come from. But I love her. I was in the South Carolina chilling, wasn’t looking for love or anything. They always say that when you don’t look for something, that’s when it comes your way. But she’s funny, she’s a dancer and she has this affable attitude that’s magnetic. People think because she’s pretty and models, that’s she’s stuck-up, but she’s not, far from stuck-up. Once you get to know her, you’ll see how cool and down to earth she is. And I was ecstatic that she chose me!
UGMAG3: We are more than privileged to join in on the interview with Sophia Erick’s Fiancé. Hey Sophia, can you introduce yourself to our readers? Sophia: Hello everyone, I’m born and raised in Philadelphia PA. Woo! Woo! Shout to The city of Brotherly Love. My birthday is June 13, which makes me a Gemini, I am a sweet, sexy, loving, caring, enthusiastic, funny and very real Individual. I have two kids and a new edition on the way, by me and Erick…a baby girl. We’re naming her Bella. I’m in College taking up Radiology technology, and will be finished soon with my degree. I am a model/actress. Right now, I’m 34 weeks pregnant, also doing the housewife thing while going to school. I’m in love with beautiful man named Erick, who is my heart. He is a loving and thoughtful man, and he’s largely a magnificent and brilliant writer. I have been through trials & tribulations, still going through issues and with God’s blessing everything will be okay, He has been good so far, I take the bad with the good, and make it all good. And that is what make me who I am day by day. UGMAG3: What’s it like living with Erick Gray? Sophia: Where do I started, mmm….lol. First of all he’s the love of my life, but living with him has its good and its flaws, like any relationship. I tell you this, I feel like I am his first real reality relationship, not saying he has not been in any relationship before, I just feel like they were just relations but there was no connection of relating, if that make any sense. Living with Erick can be difficult sometimes. I know he’s an author, but I’m also a woman with needs. Sometimes he might not realize he spends more time with his words then with me. Erick would sometime give more love in energy to his writing, 80% of it, most of times…which means there was only 20% left for me. Now that leaves me to give more of a percentage for both of us in this relationship and that can be draining, and then at that point, I won’t have any energy for myself and I couldn’t see myself or Erick’s life like that, because I also saw that he was drained as well by the words in his mind. See we as people have to be able to balance life. Readers if any you are married or dating a writer, you know that they go into their own zone; and as a future wife it is my job to help him think clearer and motivate him to be the best he can be, in all areas. Now was it like that at first living with him? NO! But everything has a cover on it. Now don’t get it twisted readers, Erick is a wonderful man, He’s a very clean, man, very generous, and sometimes playful, when he’s not distracted by his work or in his mood, basically living with Erick is an adventure, and that’s what I need.
UGMAG3: I know you have had your run-ins with readers overstepping their boundaries. But from where I am standing you see to have it all under control. What have been the highlights of living in SC instead of you living in NY? Sophia: I have no worries with readers in South Carolina. They have more of a southern welcome here, respect is very big in the south. Now not saying you don’t have your disrespectful males & females down here, they’re everywhere. But compared to New York, it’s very rare. And I’m not worried about readers or people in general overstepping there boundaries. Because Erick will correct the situation as he is supposed to and the same goes for me. UGMAG3: Have you read any of his work? I know sometimes the significant other stays out of the head of their writing mate. What have you found to be the most intriguing in his style? Sophia: Yes, I have read his works, definitely when we started dating. The first book I read, in which he left his number inside, was Booty Call *69. The second book I read, was Crave All Lose All. I started reading America’s Soul, but I haven’t finished it. However, now I’m reading Gigolo. He writes about real life. His characters are not far-fetched, and his style captivates any reader because he has a way with words. But what blew my mind, is how he voices his female characters, it’s like how does he write a woman so well, makes me wonder sometimes, lol. But in real life, it seems harder for him to understand his woman, lol. UGMAG3: When he is at the keyboard is it frustrating when he is hammering away at his work and deadbolts his time to meeting a deadline? We would love to know if he goes into a trance because his sex scenes are notorious and his development of relationships in the book are classical. Do tell us. Sophia: I tried to stay out of his way when he’s at the computer. He is very creative, and yes, sometimes I do wonder what be inside of his head, because sometimes when I read his scenes, I do get turned on as well…. where do he get these intense and very sexual scenes…from his past, his present, or me? It better be me!!! UGMAG3: I remember watching a video of you guys doing a skit. You aint no ham on rye yourself. Will we see more of Erick and Sophia’s talents? … eh emmm… clearing my throat. Damn-It I am just going to ask… How did you catch this hellava dude? What do you think captured Erick’s attention and by God who popped the question?... because I like you guys chemistry. He seems very happy…he did pop the question right? Sophia: Yes, y’all will. We had so much fun making that video. In fact, we’re tying to do a skit for Gigolo, something better and funnier. And how did I catch Erick… I think it should be vice versa, how did he catch me? Lol. But he just caught my attention with his tall, sexy and chocolate ass, we met through a mutual friend inside the club and he had very nice smile, conversation, and I’m that diva chick that a man has to have more mental than physical, he’s gotta be smart, and able to converse about anything… that’s what made me want him, his style, and Erick definitely had that, and then it went on from there. I fell in love him on our first date the very next day. And weeks later, he came back to stay with me.
THE BOOKS! UGMAG3: Hmmm. The Gigolo’s title is selfexplanatory. The main Character Kareem is young and experiencing the power of great sex, money and the consequences of NOT being responsible. Who would you deem as your modern Day Kareem? Where were you at when Kareem whispered then spoke so loud you had to write the book…tell his story? Would you say you’re writing strength is and what have you done over the years to cultivate it Erick: Yes it is. In a way, I kind of relate to that character to myself. There was a time in my life where I was definitely out there, sleeping around, having fun, having money and just enjoying women and money. And when I would travel, shit… sometimes I saved money by staying with different females in different states. Truth, I just loved pussy. But where was I when Kareem spoke to me loud and clear, he’s been speaking to me loud and clear, for years now. In truth, I started writing Gigolo years ago, I think back in 2002, I never finished the story, it was just an incomplete novel. So, for years, the story has been screaming at me, and it had to be published. But it feels more right publishing it today than back then, because my life has changed dramatically. I’m a different person now. I remember times where I had my own nightmares like Kareem. I would be lying in bed with a woman and suddenly feel this darkness overcome me, I would start to feel extremely guilty, knowing my lifestyle was wrong and that if I didn’t stop doing what I was doing, it was definitely going to catch up to me in a very negative and painful way. It felt like something was chasing me, or my conscience was screaming at me. UGMAG3: You thrived in the era of paperbacks but it is nothing like it once was. I can recall stretching a book well over a year before producing another. Now the demand is high. Readers want more, more, more for less, less, less. What are your selling strategies for 2015? How will you keep up with the E-Book Crave? Erick: Yes, times have changed. But I just loved to write completely. My selling strategies for 2015, staying online, being on the social sites like Twitter and Facebook, also, I’m starting to put out different book trailers and comedy skits, and I started my own blogs, two blogs exactly, one for Gigolo….Gigolobook.blogspot.com and Erickgray.blogspot.com. And keeping up with the EBook Crave, yeah it’s difficult, I’m no fan of E-books as a reader, but as a writer, I am, gotta keep up with the times. However, I’m old fashion, I love my paperback and hardcover books. But I have help with keeping up with the E-Books.
5.0 out of 5 stars Gigolo, the book that is unapologetic about its content, but captivating from page to page. Mr. Gray is a beast! Wow, after reading this novel, I'm speechless. Mr. Gray did his thing in this story, it was well written, great character development, nice plot and an excellent twist. This book was really good, fire, from beginning to the very end. How the story started, with the tragedy that happened in his family, I was glued from the first word. Kareem was such a emotional and interested character, his look on sex, and his views on women, I found him captivating and intriguing, womanizer with a capital W. One part of me envied him, and another part of me, felt sorry for him. The sex scenes were steamy and hot, and I mean they were detailed and very vivid. The secondary characters Fingers and Essence, they also made the story good. Fingers was so down low and dirty, his character was very unapologetic and rude, while Essence was so lost, confused and searching for love in all the wrong places. The way Mr. Gray talks about sex, it's very riveting and Exhilarating, it's part pornographic, but artistic and sensual. I read this book in two days, couldn't get any work done. Mr. Gray didn't definitely didn't disappoint with this one, another winner. He's truly a gifted writer, and I can't wait until he drops his next book. Please don't take too long this time, before I have withdrawal, lol. GigS. Gray's olo, best book I've read this year. climb to success in the literary industry has been fortunate and inspiring. UgMag3: Who was Rio Jonz ten years ago? Ten years ago I was a barber by day, and another type of hustler at night. UgMag3: Who is he now?
R
io Jonz is a 45 year old barber from Compton, California. Growing up he ran with a crip gang, sold drugs, hustled with prostitutes, and committed every crime short of murder. At 23 he was sent to prison for a robbery. Off and on for another 10 years he went back and forth to prison until his cousin overdosed in the streets. With his life of crime behind him, Rio chose to live life -instead of exist - in honor of his cousin Joseph Louis Robbins Jr. Now he writes cautionary tales of the life he once lived, with plans to start a foundation for at-risk youth. Rio also has plans to work at a drug treatment facility, counseling addicts in recovery. I still cut hair off and on, but for the most part I’m all in with my writing career. UgMag3: Writing Strength? I really don’t know my strengths as far as writing. That question has to be presented to the readers. For me to say that I can articulate my thoughts into literary prose is a given. I write what I see. And if anyone can put their life’s experiences on paper and they entertain, as well as educate, then I think that’s pretty awesome. UgMag3: Strongest character and what makes this character memorable? The strongest character to me is Bone. Every woman in the book depends on his gangster, as well as his voice of reason to proceed with what they need to do. For one man to juggle all of that estrogen, he has to have character. UgMag3: What makes you an author? I am an author by God’s design. This is just my season to come into it. Has nothing to do with my ambitions. This is His plan.
UgMag3: When did you become a true writer and what element in putting the pen to the paper qualifies you to be one? I became a true writer in prison. My ex-wife wrote me a letter in reference to the State of California making money off of my ass, and me not getting a dime. So, I asked myself how would I market myself. I think I can do comedy, so that crossed my mind. But, my celly at the time had a life sentence, and wanted me to share my exploits in the streets. So, I told stories. He liked them, and told me I should write a book. After I wrote the first 27 pages I let the neighbor read it, because he was Hispanic, and I wanted an unbiased opinion. Once he asked for more, I kept writing. And here we are.

UGMAG3: Are you working on anything else right now? Byron Carey: Of course, I have a mass of material in the vault. UGMAG3: Can you tell us a little about your new project (if you have one), and what progress you’ re making? Byron: Well my new project, is written in a different context. I love testing myself mentally so it is written with a universal pen. Other than that, I am about half way through the process of completing it. It's will be a page turner. UGMAG3: What have you learned from writing your previous novel that has helped you with writing this new one? Byron: Actually I penned Nowhere 2 Turn about ten years ago, when I didn't understand what I
was doing. I had no clue or a format, just a ton of words on the pages. But as I continued to learn the craft of the pen I gotten wiser while mentally focusing on the growth in my penmanship. So with each book I try to test my maturity and let things flow naturally. UGMAG3: What got left out in the final draft? Where there alternate endings you considered? Byron: Actually everything went in. It wasn't anything deleted. I may have changed a few words up to keep my readers wanting more. As far as alternate ending, I stuck with my first mind and it was a winner.. UGMAG3: How do you think your writing has changed in-between novels? And, of course, when
can readers expect your new novel to be published? Byron: Of course it changed, that was my true intention. I would love to make each book better then the last. You can expect the book to be out in February no later than March.
I never knew this woman name but she had a beautiful frame. Long hair, nice smile, and intelligent in the brain. Dark skinned with brown eyes, another model in the game. The most beautiful star I’ve ever seen dance in the rain. Medical assistant that works with persistent. Modeling on the side hoping her dreams goes the distant. Her role model is Beyonce, favorite song is Yonce. Drunk in Love and made love to her fiancé. They had a Jay Z & Beyonce relationship. Both with great jobs so they’re making it, dreams they were chasing it. Every obstacles was overcome by facing it. Haters hating it and thought they were faking it and used everything in their power to try breaking it. But it never phased the couple. And in return their blessings were double. Nice crib and a beautiful daughter. And a site to see like staring at the islands and its clear blue waters. She has a great life that women would die for. A daughter and a man they would cry for. CONFLICT But let this story be told. Everything that glitters isn’t gold. Engaged and soon to be married but their marriage never happened. Because their sky blue passion of love blacken. The happiest woman alive but she was dead inside. Because her man impregnated another woman on the side. She cried and continued to cry because the man that she love habitually lied. And it hurts even more to see her daughter cry because she can’t fathom why her mother has tears in her eyes. Now a single mother telling her daughter everything will get better. But hard to explain why her daddy and her aren’t living together. It’s a hard pill to swallow when her man wallow in lust. But the thought of another woman has her blood pressure up. Her heart crush so she fuss and she cuss and puts her middle finger up.
And put his every clothes in her grill and burn it all to dust. When men approach her with a “Hey sexy, hey gorgeous, Yo girl what up” she looks in disgust. Fierce attitude with her guard up and not giving her heart up. Only care about her family and daughter and getting these major bucks. But on the inside she wants to be a wife but she practically gave up. Tried dating other guys but had nothing but bad luck. And having a title of a girlfriend isn’t enough. So out of the blue she decided to lay next to her daughter in bed With tears in her eyes she asked God, “To receive love do I have to beg?’’ RESOLUTION Then God said, “I begged you to talk to me since you were born. I gave you intuition so your heart wouldn’t be torn so you’ve been warned. I’m a jealous God and no man comes before me. It’s ironic that all the selfies you take, you still couldn’t see that you were created for me. I’m the reason for the air you breathe. And you crucified me with your actions for years and I still didn’t leave. No man can protect, provide and love like me. Nor pray hard for you till they bleed like me. You may not see me with your physical eyes. But I’ve sent angels to watch over you in disguise. But you chose a man that wasn’t for you to love and touch you. And although you had your child out of wedlock I drew smiles in her face to show you I love you. I still love you even to this day. I created the sun for you so you can wake up every day. Your heart torn but the words from my lips can heal you quick. And I created joy in your daughter life to show you that happiness exist. Man will fail you but I never will. Men drove you insane but for years I’ve called you to give me the wheel. But you ignored me and chose to do what you want to do. And you didn’t even know that I created a man in heaven just for you. Just seek me and trust me and meditate on my laws. I’ll give you the desires of your heart but you have to give me your all. Forgive those that hurt you and forgive yourself. Love others and love yourself. I love you and I’ll never leave you and have much blessings in store. And I’m the same God today, yesterday and forevermore.
