Zooming out of the location to a metropolitan scale over the city of Bern; the importance of the 2012 Schindler site on the transport infrastructure of the city is immediately evident. The site is the location of three major traffic conduits; the Nordring from the west, the Tiefenaustrasse from the north, and the railway from the North into the city centre. In other parts of the city, similar traffic hubs have developed into areas of major economic interest. Due to the current positioning of roads and lack of architectural presence, the overall programme is currently underdeveloped and comprises: an unused sloping area devoid of proper function, a large parking lot and the unused Eilgut terminal. However, the Reitschule and the current Drogenanlaufstelle give the place its identity within the city. The drug addicts roam around the site whilst the Reitschule has its own events and activities.
>
The location of the current Reitschule poses architectural, social, political and judicial questions about the use, ownership and identity of the sites public space and programme. The multidisciplinary nature of the sites problematic state challenges into creating a juncture of solutions which will solve the variety of issues... This junction will be a place of constant motion, variety, activity and an injection of liveliness and fresh potential in the tissue of Bern.

MASTERPLAN

ď ?ď Ąď łď ´ď Ľď ˛ď °ď Źď Ąď Ž Located within the city centre borders, the location carries with it huge economic and cultural potential. By proposing a high density architectural implant the site will gain the urban mass necessary to redevelop and sustain itself. This approach involves; extending the cultural identity to a broader audience, developing an arts programme by offering concert and theatre space, exhibition space and studios. In terms of an overall urban strategy, we propose the creation of multi-faceted programme, which includes; offices, residential buildings, shops and parking space to develop the possibility of a twenty-four hour use of space. Furthermore the public space will be defined
ď „ď ˛ď Żď §ď Ľď Žď€ ď ď Žď Źď Ąď Śď łď ´ď Ľď Źď Źď Ľ by two large inviting squares comprising of the open spaces around the Reitschule and the railway corridor. These spaces will be created by moving the existing infrastructure of the SchĂźtzenmattstrasse and the NeubrĂźckstrasse into a single dual way road which will be placed underneath the terrace structure. The master-plan is envisages four architectural interventions within the project perimeter. These are to be seen as an ensemble of individual solutions each with its own identity and aesthetic. They will develop the currently empty site into an urban landscape that serves as an extension of the city centre.
The building volume is oriented towards its surroundings by the implication of the variation in the façades and with this the placement of volumes within two grids. On the one hand the static positioning of the box-volumes towards the street and valley creates a clear formal street profile and forms a curtain towards the street. On the other side the more vibrant movement in the positioning of these volumes and their openings. In this way the building radiates two different atmospheres a formal and a playful one. Although the building interacts as a diversionary object aesthetically and on the higher levels also volumetrically, the ground floor
plan leaves room for three walkways connecting the square and the street. The building serves the square functionally and has clear interaction with the entrance of the Reitschule. The moving boxes on the square connect the two, so that there is an exchange between the two and the square. The boxes furthermore facilitate open air cultural activities and bars.

COMPONENTS CURTAIN
TERRACE The “TERRACES are built on top of the existing railway terminal and over the new road; they will be the anchor point of a new urban density and will encompass; an underground parking lot, a supermarket, shops, housing units, office buildings, public space and gardens. The structure will have both internal mechanical transit devices and external pathways which will carry the future user through the site, along the facades of the buildings and offer mechanically assisted means of negotiating topographical features.
The new façade of the area will be the “CURTAINâ€? as it creates the new street profile for the Bollwerk on the one side and forms the new plaza on the other side. This building hosts the Drogenanlaufstelle and the homeless shelter; integrating different functions and symbolizing the social reintegration of the individual drug addict. The building has entrances and shops at street level, with apartments, an exhibition space and more private functions on the higher levels. By creating an underground supply road and storage facility, the open space around the building is relieved from traffic.
BOXSLOPE
FOLLIES The Aare valley at this location in Bern, is host to two existing monumental bridges and the Southern bank, being North facing has a lack of sunlight. The riverfront is thus an isolated cavern in the middle of the city lacking activity and purpose. The answer to this lies in this case in designing “FOLLIES as a medium of transport offering an extraordinary experience in the act of of moving crossing river. The water powered mechanical structures offer a fun ride, a functional movement and a true original identity to the valley.
Built on the North facing slope of the River Aare, the “BOXSLOPE will overcome its geomorphologic challenges by hosting a mechanical building that will move up and the down the hill site and will interact with the surrounding architectural volumes serving as an dynamic entry device for both buildings and public space, and at the same time serve the function of a kinetic extension of internal space.

Internally the building has access from all sides at street level. This ensures that the different user groups are kept separate where required, and that all spaces around the building are safe and controllable. The Drogenanlaufstelles cafĂŠ is in this case oriented towards the square and has a relation to the public as the other shops and cafĂŠs have making it blend in with its surroundings. This will make going there more inviting so there is more interaction and dialogue between the institution and the people of the city. The building has two vertical transportation shafts with both stairways and elevators. The first floor level hosts the treatment facilities and space for personnel. The floor is divided into different zones so the user groups are clearly differentiated.
