alfway between New Zealand and Hawaii, is one of the South Pacific’s hidden gems — Samoa. With only a small amount of tourism, arriving to Samoa was like a step back in time — back to a simple time where food is fresh, the people are friendly and the waters are clear. We were greeted with a sincere and genuine welcome at the airport and again at Taumeasina Island Resort. Our immediate switch into “island time” was an unexpected part of our arrival into a, what felt like, secret new world. There simply is no need to rush in Samoa. It was like a new calm energy that took over our group and we quickly learned that the priorities of the people are focussed on family and quality of life in a way that you do not see often when travelling to glamorous destinations. We didn’t realise that our island getaway was going to give us so much more than amazing pictures and incredible tans. It seems the spirit of Samoa is focussed on celebrating the simple things in life and this taught us a lot during our stay. The traditions and culture of Samoa were demonstrated with pride throughout our stay at Taumeasina. Whether it’s the local foods or the evening entertainment in the form of fire dancing or local singers, we were constantly reminded of the islands beauty and its people. There is just something incredibly unique about the people of Samoa which is difficult to describe. Their authentic pride and commitment to service made us feel at home immediately. Every person we encountered simply wanted us to love their country as much as they do and nothing
was too much trouble for them to do to make our stay enjoyable. Walking onto a deserted beach or incredible waterfall and having it all to yourself is not a unique experience in Samoa. It happened to us time and time again. The fact is there are so many picturesque beaches and crystal waterfalls and so few people that it’s almost guaranteed. It was a feeling of privilege to explore the island and its beautiful jungles and lush landscapes without ritzy attractions and large resorts. Traffic delays due to coconut harvesting above the roads or random families of a mother pig and her piglets wandering along the beach tracks were the norm and all part of the experience. The To-Sua Ocean Trench is something that needs to be seen to be believed. For once, the super hyped destination actually delivers and looks exactly like the postcards or something out of a movie set. The experience of swimming in this beautiful turquoise natural pool was pure magic. Our resort had endless activities including snorkelling with the local wildlife, sailing, kyaking and much more. The feasts of incredible seafood that had been caught each day or fresh produce, grown locally will not be easily forgotten. We lost track of the fresh coconut consumption and the bar staff didn’t disappoint in the cocktail department. Food is an important part of the Samoan culture and large meals are non-negotiable and definitely needed after our long days exploring. Needless to say, it was a sad day when our two weeks in paradise came to an end. A massive thank you to the amazing Samoa Airways for getting the team there safely and back. We will never forget our time on this friendly island and hope to return soon. MAXI M.COM.AU

Tiffany Tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born and raised in New York, half in the city and half countryside, and started participating in pageants around age eight. After graduating from college I chose to further pursue modelling and also focus on the things that truly make me happy which include travel, time with my loved ones and constantly learning from others. Are there any other funny anecdotes you can share about this Destination MAXIM photo shoot? Learning all the quirky Aussie slang from the other girls. I’m still laughing inside. What is your best asset? I’m always smiling or laughing so I’d say my smile. Otherwise, my best asset is being able to adapt to any social environment and staying cultured. When do you feel sexy? After a good workout at the gym and any time I’m in front of the camera.

Both give me a sense of adrenaline and the best confidence boost. What would people be most surprised to know about you? Being the clumsiest girl in the world, I’m pretty surprised I’ve never broken a bone or sprained anything! What’s the scariest thing that’s happened to you on a photo shoot? Aside from multiple nip-slips in public, being washed away by beach waves and encounters with bugs swarming my face, I’ve had an island pig attempt to bite me in the butt. Sometimes BTS can be the funniest moments. What do you look for in a man? Chemistry is number one, someone ambitious who can make me laugh and be able to handle my sassy side. Being able to hold a conversation with my circle of friends and family is always a plus, too. What’s the weirdest thing someone has sent you via social media? My DM: “Hey, Sexy Lady, I’d pay to lick your beautiful armpit”.

I really am. I think personality shines through photoshoots and the more positive you are the better your results.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Although I’m just 21 Years old, I believe I have the wisdom of an elder. I grew up with my two older brothers and one older sister. They had all left by the time I was 16. Until now, I’ve been the sole provider for my mother – unfortunately, my father passed away when I was eight. I’ve been blessed with a job after job from the age of 14 and have not stopped working since. From hospitality to retail careers, I’m incredibly lucky to have had opportunities every year. I’m currently in my second year of a Bachelor of Nursing program, and hope to continue into psychiatry, but I’ve always wanted to be a model and MAXIM has allowed me this opportunity.
When do you feel sexy? I feel sexy due to my confidence, whether it is certified or not. The way you believe in yourself is the way others will see you.
What do you do when you’re not posing for MAXIM? I’m influencing positive mental health. I believe throughout your life, no matter what is happening, you should put forward your purpose.
What’s next for you? I’m young and have the world at my feet. I hope to continue studying and eventually make an impact on society in the mental health sense. I would really love to continue modelling and acting but whatever God has in place for me I will accept and keep driving myself for better.
What is your best asset? My personality – I think it shines through, allowing me to show who
Describe your ideal man? In a man I look for respect and humour. If you entail both of these qualities you’ve got it in the bag. Would you ever date one of your social media followers? I definitely would date one of my followers. In this day and age social media is the epitome of getting to know each other until you get to know each other in person. We are blessed with the technology of today and should be so grateful for the opportunity.

Katie Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’ve always had two passions – animals and modelling. Growing up in Los Angeles, I did a lot of modelling. My mum owned her own promotional modelling company and was a model herself, so she knew the industry well and taught me a lot. Modelling as a kid was so much fun and it taught me to have thick skin while my confidence also skyrocketed. Although I enjoyed modelling, I wanted to do more with animals. So, I ventured a couple hours north for my bachelor’s degree, where I studied Animal Science. After receiving my degree, I moved to Australia to work at an Animal Conservation. I finally made my way back to sunny California, where I currently live and still model part-time while also volunteering at animal shelters. Are there any other funny anecdotes you can share about this Destination MAXIM trip? I ate tons of dessert and drank a pitcher of beer before one of my
shoots because I was unaware there was an upcoming group shot to be done. I felt a bit sick, and slightly tipsy – whoops! What is your best asset? Legs! Thank you mother for my long legs. Also, my brain – smart girls rock! When do you feel sexy? Any time I’m in heels – they resemble confidence. Whether it’s for date night, girls’ night out or at a photoshoot, I jump at the opportunity to put on a pair of heels. I also secretly wish I was taller – the taller the heel, the better. What do you look for in a man? Intelligent, athletic, driven and family-oriented. Describe your ideal date? First, we would go to a nice restaurant and have a steak dinner with a buffet of desserts with a bottle of champagne. Then we would go to the beach and bar hop along the water. Lastly, we would finish at a rooftop bar and dance the night away. What’s next for you? I have a couple brands that I’m working with, but I’d love to travel more with brands I’m passionate about.

It allows me to share the most creative and raw parts of myself with the outside world. I hope to one day make it my full-time job and travel the world doing what I love. What did you love most about this Destination MAXIM? I just love that I met so many amazing people and made friends along the way. You can also catch me hanging with friends, eating out or at the beach. What would people be most surprised to know about you? Most people think I’m all about the superficialities in life when I’m actually very down to earth. My head is in the clouds most of the time but I’m actually a very intelligent person. I love reading and expanding my knowledge about the world and people — I think this comes from my love for nature. What do you look for in a man? Humour is a must, confidence, direction in life, ambition, honesty and genuineness. Describe your ideal date. It’s a work in progress, but I’m really excited to finish it and share it with everyone.
What is your best asset? My intuition. Intuition is the ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning. Always trust your “gut feeling” and let it guide you. When do you feel sexy? When I’m doing my make-up sitting on the bathroom sink listening to Lana Del Rey. I’m always singing and dancing when I get ready and that’s when I most feel myself. Describe your ideal date? Getting away from the city and spending the day at the beach, hiking in the mountains or horseback riding are some of my favourite date ideas. And live music – you can’t really go wrong there. What do you look for in a man? The most important thing to me is being able to talk openly with your partner about anything without judgement on either side.
When you can be yourself around someone, you are going to have a much closer bond with that person. I also love a guy who can make me laugh and who is really smart. What’s next for you? Starting my first business – I can’t share too much about it right now, but I hope to launch it this year!

Ashley “Caramel-dipped wafer, covered in coconut flakes and drizzled in chocolate comes to mind when I think of the word “Samoa” — my favourite girl scout cookie. But now, after this Destination MAXIM – my fifth trip for MAXIM, Samoa has a whole new meaning. This tropical island was straight out of a dream — the clearest blue skies, sparkly water, plus the hottest babes in my view – I was in paradise. Every Destination MAXIM trip is special in its own way and has the most memorable moments.
Once again I added new best friends to my collection, mostly from Australia this time. My favourite part about Samoa was the breathtaking sunrises – every morning I woke up very early at 5am so I could take advantage of the full day. Working with my favourite photographer, Rocky, as usual and my most favourite producer Bella, I’m so glad to have been featured many times in MAXIM Australia. It’s truly my dream job and these experiences with everyone are memories I will treasure forever. Thank you to everyone who has supported me thus far, it’s been the most pleasant journey and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Ashley XOXO. ■

n occasions too numerous to mention we’ve seen how something that starts out as a side project often ends up being a much bigger deal. And such is the case with one of the coolest ocean crafts launched late last year, the 217-ft. Hodor. Built by Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon, the catamaran started life as a support vessel — aka Shadow Cat — for

the 285-ft. Feadship Lonian, which while an admittedly impressive piece of naval architecture, doesn’t especially have much to distinguish it from the next luxe superyacht. Hodor, however, is a different story, at once more avant-garde and menacing as well as a damn sight more fun. That’s down to Australian firm Incat Crowther, which went above and beyond its brief to create a custom floating toy chest for The Incat Crowther designed the 217.-ft. Shadow Cat as a support vessel for the superyacht Lonian
Lonian’s owner and ended up building a vessel James Bond only wishes he had command of. Designed to serve the larger craft, it holds a helicopter, speedboats, tenders, Jet Skis, water toys, 4x4s, quad bikes and even a submarine for any sort of excursion on land or sea that Lonian’s owner fancies. The idea being that the mothership is free to devote every inch of deck space to sheer sybaritic cruising. However, Hodor, which shares a 20-man crew with Lonian, is far too cool to merely float along in another boat’s wake. Incat Crowther won’t disclose how many millions of dollars were spent on her, but judging from the vessel’s lethal looks, no expense was spared. Her helipad can accommodate sizable choppers including as the stylish twin-engine, nine-passenger EC145, while Super- Yacht Times reports that the largest craft she carries on board is a bespoke 56-ft. speedboat bristling with four high-performance Seven Marine outboard engines that can be launched and retrieved via a special hydraulic platform. Hodor is also home to a fully-equipped dive
The Hodor is bristling with toys including a helicopter, speedboat, submarine, Jet Skis, quad bikes and more
centre as well as a high-tech floating hospital ward complete with a decompression chamber. And should some of Lonian’s guests prefer to stay aboard, it has well-designed cabins, a guest lounge and a water-level balcony, as well. When going full-bore, the yacht can reach a maximum speed of 22.5 knots and cover its full 5,500-nautical-mile maximum range at a cruising speed of 14 knots courtesy of a twin engine setup. In certifying Hodor’s seaworthiness and general capability, marine surveyor Tom Corness of Patton Marine somewhat understated the case when he declares, “the quality of workmanship is exceptionally good for this commercial standard of vessel, it blends commercial and yacht standards perfectly to perform yacht support tasks.” And if you were wondering, the name Hodor appears to be a reference to a supporting character in Game of Thrones, a giant, immensely strong yet simpleminded servant of the Stark family, Winterfell’s ruling house. The sort of character, we’d hasten to point out, who is often underestimated until that crucial moment when push comes to shove. At which point you’d be well advised to get the hell out of the way. ■

polished and gleaming, not an oil stain or stray wrench to be seen anywhere. “When I bought the company I said to the production manager, ‘We’re going to have to reflect a Formula One paddock here,’” Skip Braver tells me of the day in 2002 when he salvaged Cigarette Racing from bankruptcy. Across a vast wooden desk, relaxed and amicable, Braver epitomises the role of a Miami speedboat CEO. “And he said ‘Skip, we’re not cooking tomatoes here!’ I said I know we’re not cooking tomatoes, but you gotta clean up! “ We want this place to be something special right away. It’s not tough,” he continues. “If you walk into a [factory] and it’s a mess, and there’s no organisation, and it’s filthy dirty, what’s it say about your boats? How are you treating your tools?” Currently Cigarette Racing builds 12 different models in this sprawling campus, under two main categories: Open Performance boats, which are commonly referred to as a Center Console, and Pure Performance, what most people associate with the term “Cigarette”. To make an automotive metaphor, Cigarette Racing’s Chief Marketing Officer Scott Preacher equates the former to

s the graphite grey Cigarette Racing 41’ AMG Carbon Edition pulls away from the dock, captain Bud Lorow engages the engines. Shifting the centre console boat into gear, a shudder coils through the fibreglass and carbon fibre composite hull — portending something special, and perhaps a little bit terrifying, is afoot. The vessel makes its way through Biscayne Bay, the white and turquoise skyline of Miami in front, mangrove to the right. From this vantage point Magic City resembles the jaw of a giant dragon with pearly asymmetric teeth. After we pass under the Rickenbacker Causeway and enter open water, Lorow turns. “Ok y’all ready?” he asks, grinning widely. The veteran champion racer confidently pushes the throttle forward and the vessel lurches to life. One more push and I’m holding onto the cabin’s frame for dear life, white-knuckled. A massive wake spreads behind us as we disappear more pedestrian watercraft with disdain. There is absolutely no need for a pleasure craft to go this fast. But then again, neither Cigarette Racing Team nor AMG, MercedesBenz’s performance division, are known for their restraint. So here we are, cruising Biscayne at 80mph. And while the two companies share a penchant for speed, they also share a demand for extreme engineering. I witness that firsthand the following morning when I visit Cigarette Racing’s cavernous facilities in Miami’s Opa-locka suburb. What instantly impresses upon entering is just how immaculate their workspace is: concrete floors you could eat sashimi off of, boats

performance SUVs and the latter to supercars in terms of utility and velocity. Size, speed and amenities all can vary greatly; while you can slip into an entry-level 38-ft. boat for as little as US$500,000, the size can swell up to 60 ft. — and the cost sprawl well over US$3 million. While they’ve built vessels with a 172mph top speed, 140mph is their normal zenith. “We could build boats to go faster, [but] we choose not to,” Preacher explains. “You’d be surprised how hard it is to run 100mph for a long period of time. Even on a day when it’s glass out, the boat’s still running on top of the water. You can get a false sense of security running 180mph in a car on the autobahn, you feel like you’ve got everything together. On a boat you don’t have that sensation — you’re on the razor’s edge the entire time at those speeds.”
Clearly the company’s philosophy has worked, as Cigarette Racing produces around 50 vessels a year for the world’s most discriminating customers (they claim they could build more, but limit themselves to maintain exclusivity). And almost everything is hand-built under this roof — only motors, fuel tanks and electronics are sourced; everything else is done in house. Enrique Iglesias, Nelson Piquet, the Sultan of Johor and former president George H.W. Bush are all past customers. “We build the best performance boats,” Braver states flatly, tapping his fingers together at the end of his long desk. “We build boats for the ocean, not lakes. They have the best resale value because they stay together.” He smiles. “Your body’s going to give up before my hull gives up.”
THE CIGARETTE RACING 41’ AMG CARBON EDITION Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance arm AMG has a longstanding relationship with Cigarette Racing: since 2007 the two companies have jointly developed special edition boats correlating with one of Affalterbach’s greatest creations. Now for its 11th vessel the partnership of the two supreme engineering teams has collaborated to build a craft inspired by AMG’s GT 63S 4-Door Coupé. Last year’s boat, the 515 Project ONE, was all about speed — fitting, given it was an homage to AMG’s ludicrous Project ONE hypercar. With 3,100 horsepower and a 140mph top speed, the hyperboat splashed headlines across the world.
But just as the Project ONE hypercar only has room for you, a single attractive companion and maybe a Louis Vuitton weekender, Cigarette Racing's fastest totems of velocity offer a similarly limited capacity (six people max). Meanwhile, just as the GT 63S 4-Door Coupé offers amazingly ample roominess in back for full-size humans, so too does its Cigarette Racing equivalent. The 41’ Carbon Edition allows you to bring as many as 20 of your best friends along for your cruise to Havana. But just because it prioritises comfort, don’t think for a second the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition can’t haul ass. The 41-foot vessel features
quad Mercury Racing 400R engines generating a total of 1,600 horsepower for 83mph of wave-leaping power. Featuring a dramatic Designo graphite grey magno matte paint job (developed exclusively for its GT 63S sister vehicle) and eye-popping high-gloss crimson AMG highlights, “Cigarette Cool” seats and materials, copious carbon fibre (deck, rudder, roof lining and hardtop), three 17-inch HD Garmin touchscreens, ambient lighting and high-amperage sound system, the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition is the perfect vehicle to host your next floating soirée. Miami Vice. The connotation — that of ridiculous velocity tied to the illicit entrepreneurship that defined the show — perfectly sums up the genesis of Cigarette Racing. The larger-than-life figure of Don Aronow is credited with starting not only Cigarette Racing, but also the culture (and sleek silhouette) of the more generic “cigarette boat” — known more prosaically as a gofast. The first official vessel to carry that name was built for Formula, Aronow’s first company, years before he founded Cigarette Racing. Those speedboats were engineered for the wild races Aronow and his boys would run to the Bahamas and back, but because of their absurd speeds and radar-avoiding profile the vessels were soon appropriated by the Cocaine Cowboys that literally built ’80s Miami. He would make millions and gain worldwide renown, but it wouldn’t end well for Aronow. In 1987 after attending a meeting with a colleague and later-to-be-convicted drug runner, a dark blue Lincoln pulled alongside Aronow’s car and opened fire. Sadly, the legend may have fallen victim to some of his more nefarious customers who were unhappy with him selling his go-fast boats to the U.S. Customs Service as well. But that climactic end only adds to the mythical allure of the Cigarette brand: Don Aronow’s story is so towering, so bombastic, that he was immortalised (as “Ben Aronoff ”) by John Travolta in 2018’s Speed Kills. Although you’re much better off watching the 2009 documentary Thunder Man: The Don Aronow Story if you want to avoid seeing Travolta in white skinny jeans. ■

F
lashback to 1918. The Spanish flu came into Australia via returning World War 1 soldiers. The precise source of first known infection — in Melbourne 1918 — was never discovered. However, once in Australia, the flu rapidly escaped a quarantine system whose efficacy relied on the honesty of ship medical officers and captains to volunteer past or present cases on board and the willingness of returned soldiers to self-report and voluntarily isolate themselves. Now, flashforward to the returning Ruby Princess cruise ship that docked in Sydney on March 19, following an exemption made by the Australian government allowing them to disembark without testing or health monitoring. In this case, an email from the ship’s master on March 8 had stated there were “no ill passengers or crew on board” even though to date there have been over 160 cases of COVID-19 in returned passengers logged onboard. Also take into account those willingly self-isolating over the last few weeks on crowded beaches and in restaurants and bars. In 1918 there were too few doctors and nurses to deal with the crisis. Health facilities were overrun. Schools were shut down at
various times in various states. Individual states did their own thing as a national argument fell apart. There were shortages of food and essential goods. It was compulsory to wear a mask in the street. Places of entertainment such as theatres, cinemas and dance halls were closed, as were churches (sound familiar?). The Sydney Easter show was called off in 1919, as it has been for 2020. In Sydney alone 40% of residents caught the Spanish flu and ultimately between 13,000 and 15,000 Australians died; almost two-thirds of deaths were in adults between 25-34. In 1918, the world was a very different place. Doctors knew viruses existed but had never seen one – there were no electron microscopes and the genetic material of viruses had not yet been discovered. Accessibility to information was limited and a lack of internet connection meant that working from home in self-isolation was not an option. Yet, the common link between the experience of 1918 and that of today’s COVID-19 pandemic remains: human psychology. Humans have evolved to react poorly to uncertainty and unpredictability because both make us feel a perceived lack of control. Add to this mix the fact that COVID-19 makes assessing risk difficult because our objective knowledge of the disease is still evolving. Yet, now, more than ever, common-
sense precautionary measures are especially important given the high likelihood of contracting this coronavirus. There are important basic things that we, collectively, can do to take back the power here and control (to some extent) our degree of vulnerability to this illness. While as a population, we may be anxious, fearful and discouraged, we do have the power to minimise our susceptibility through hygiene measures such as self-isolation, monitoring of temperature, washing hands regularly with soap and avoiding facial contact; note: these measures do NOT include hoarding canned food and toilet paper which only contributes to mass hysteria and a further lack of perceived control (and scientific study proves that a lack of control appears to be the human psyche’s Kryptonite, led by a mixture of miscalibrated emotion and limited knowledge). And it’s not just hygiene measures that put that health ball back in our court. We also have an opportunity to bolster our immune system through nutrients and herbs that have clinical efficacy in viral control (research they had very limited access to in 1918), so in between your dusting off those old-school board games and trying to flip tortillas into a bowl above your head with a flipper (trust me — it’s a thing), take a few minutes to stock up on these following real essentials:

ELDERBERRY A recent study by a group of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering researchers from University of Sydney found that compounds from elderberries can directly inhibit viral influenza entry and replication in human cells and can help strengthen a person’s immune response to the virus. In fact, the immunomodulatory effects of Elderberry (S.nigra) have been investigated and appear to show that an extract of the plant would also be likely to stimulate the immune systems of the weak or immune-compromised. Two further clinical trials using a liquid elderberry extract showed a reduction in symptoms and duration of influenza infection, and another pilot trial with Elderberry extract lozenges also confirmed a beneficial effect on severity and duration of cold and flu-like symptoms, making Elderberry a tasty and efficacious natural immune support. ANDROGRAPHIS Andrographis is a plant native to South and Southeast Asia that is revered in many medical traditions, including Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. It contains andrographolide which is a bitter-tasting compound that has been shown to improve the function of the immune system. It can boost numbers of white blood cells and medical studies have reported that taking Andrographis daily may prevent symptoms of upper respiratory infection. Already have the sniffles? Andrographis is also used to shorten the duration of symptoms from cold or flu. Research shows that taking this herb can reduce severity of symptoms within three days and a 2007 study found that people who took Andrographis when they had a cold or flu experienced significantly less severe symptoms than those who didn’t take it. This is one for the first-aid cupboard.

And if that’s not enough, go back to basics to bolster immunity:
ASTRAGALUS This is an important medicinal plant in traditional Chinese medicine, and extracts are commonly used for both treatment and prevention of cold and flu. Astragalus is both an anti-viral and immunomodulatory herb, and several studies have reported the effects of astragalus on the immune system, from enhanced immunoglobulin production to restoration of lost T-Cell activity; in other words, Astragalus boosts the immune system to fight viruses. Interestingly, Astragalus root appears especially effective when immune function is stressed by environmental or endogenous challenges, like stress or anxiety — and let’s be honest, who isn’t stressed or anxious \cR_ aUV` dU\YR 0<C61 & QRcRY\]ZR[a,

Some of the most important nutritional players in immune health include probiotics and prebiotics, both found in food sources like kimchi, sauerkraut, tempeh, miso, yoghurt and kefir. These foods have been shown in clinical studies to reduce the risk of upper respiratory tract infection and support a stronger immune response. ?99D ACJ=B;. Regular exercise helps to improve immune function and decreases the risk of respiratory infections like the common cold. Regular exercise helps to reduce inflammation and accelerates the circulation of diseasefighting white blood cells, so whether you’re outdoors or in the comfort of your living room, keep that training regime flowing. Above all, please remember that we can maintain a level of power and control through this uncertainty, as long as we continue to be compassionate, thoughtful, generous and empathetic towards others. Share knowledge and emotional support. Be immune strong. Maintain routine (our human psyche loves that). Know that today may be scary, unpredictable, and anxiety-inducing, but our health (both physical and mental) and our futures remain bright if we can focus on these true essentials.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Your daily guide to keeping your immune system healthy and happy…
7.15am
Rise and shine. Stick to your routine even through you may be house-bound to alleviate stress and anxiety. Begin the day with 10 minutes of daily journaling — studies show that scheduling ‘think time’ to go through any worries, concerns or ‘to-dos’ boosts productivity and mental health (and we all need to look after our mental health in isolation. Cortisol, our stress hormone, lowers the immune system and causes us issues like weight gain and insomnia, so take 10 minutes out of your day to look after your head, and reap the rewards. At this time, have a big glass of water: most of us don’t drink nearly enough H20 throughout the day, and dehydration reduces the overall amounts of blood and lymphatic fluids that are integral to a healthy immune system, so start first thing! Oh, and by the way, once you’re thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so get ahead of the thirst.
7.30am
Breakfast and your first chance to boost those virus-fighting nutrients. In a bowl, add natural yoghurt (Greek or coconut if you’re dairy free), strawberries and blueberries, chia seeds,
walnuts and pumpkin seeds (otherwise known as pepitas). Remember: a well-balanced gut bacteria is essential to a healthy immune system, so add an extra dollop of yoghurt (and sprinkle on a probiotic capsule if you’ve got one handy). Berries are high in Vitamin C to ward off colds and flu, while pepitas are high in zinc to boost immune function. Protein is high in chia seeds and nuts so you’ll be protecting your muscles as well as your respiratory system with this one. At this point, take your immune support supplements, too. I love a combo supplement of echinacea, olive leaf, Andrographis, C and Zinc, but if you’re happy to stick with plain old Vitamin C, remember — your body can only absorb 1000mg of C per hour, so instead of taking a handful at once, try to spread them out through the day for best effect.
8.00am
If you are working from home, welcome to the office! Remember to sip water throughout the day to maintain hydration and take a short break every few hours. Break up the day with 60 seconds of push-ups/sit-ups/burpees, etc every two hours to boost fitness and immune function. Ease up on the coffee this morning, too — excess caffeine consumption lowers immunity.
12noon
Lunch-time. You may be indoors, but there’s no need to go without essential Vitamin D.Whip up some Paleo Salmon patties and serve with leafy green spinach (for an extra Vit C boost). Mix together mashed sweet potato, canned salmon, two eggs, almond meal and season with a little garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice and/or chilli flakes. Shape into balls and fry in a pan with a little olive oil. Sweet potato is high in Vitamin A — in fact one cup of the orange stuff has a whopping 377% of the recommended daily intake of Vit A, important for healthy mucous membranes (think nasal cavities and sinuses). Almond meal is also high in Vit E, and vitamin E deficiency is associated with increased infectious diseases, so up that nut intake to fight infection!

and boosted telomerase activity to promote stability of chromosomes and prevent their deterioration. This deterioration is linked to premature aging and some cancers, so download a mindfulness meditation App and breathe through the isolation.
7pm Dinner is served. A great steak served with ratatouille will not only impress your housemates or significant other, but will be the final daily boost of immune bliss. Red meat is high in Zinc for immune support, while a slow-cooked mixture of tomato, red capsicum, garlic, onion, basil, eggplant and zucchini will provide a last hurrah of vegelicious nutrients: Vit C, B6 and magnesium all contribute to a healthy defence system and as a whole ratatouille is low in carbs and without most starchy vegetables — making it a perfect complement to a proteinrich meal. Go easy on the alcohol here, too — like coffee, it dampens the immune response.
9.30pm I know, I know — it’s an ask — but sleep is essential for repair and rejuvenation (and to allow the body quiet time to fight any viruses or bacteria it may have come into contact
with that day). The hours before midnight are twice as beneficial as the hours afterwards, so try to get as many of those precious ones in as possible. To rest and relax before your head hits the pillow, take a powdered magnesium supplement to switch off that brain and calm those COVID-19 nerves half an hour before you hit the hay, or alternatively take an Epsom Salt bath for the same magnesium lift. If you are reading before sleep, try Tim Ferris’ Tools of Titans — this book gives productivity tips and a whole lot of perspective to keep motivation high and determination strong. â– Brooke Benson Campbell (BHSc) is a Clinical Nutritionist and Naturopath, speaker, writer and presenter with a passion for all things health, beauty and wellbeing. or the truly wealthy, one elegant solution to increased tariffs on French wine readily presents itself: buy your own vineyard. Despite burgeoning interest and a surge in acquisitions eating into available inventory, there are over 80 vineyards and wine estates currently listed for sale with Vineyards-Bordeaux, the Christie’s International Real Estate affiliate and market leader located in what is arguably the world’s most famous wine region. Chinese buyers now own about 170 vineyard estates, or châteaux, in Bordeaux, Vineyards-Bordeaux cofounder and executive partner Michael Baynes tells MAXIM — billionaire Jack Ma, China’s richest man, reportedly owns several of them — and the uptick in investment means that “Bordeaux wine estates are more popular today than we have seen for a long time.” Which we predict also means that prices will only go up from here. As an example, an attractive property with a historic mansion with origins dating back to the late 1700s and about 200 acres, a quarter of which is planted with the classic Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, is listed for about US$4.5 million. Of course France is just one of the world’s great wine-producing countries that also offers attractive luxury real estate opportunities. The oenophile investor has options including Tuscany in Italy, Argentina’s Mendoza and the Napa Valley, to name a famous few. Baynes points out that selecting a vineyard depends on an investor’s personal goals and business strategy. His clients’ wishlist often includes a desirable residence, attractive landscape, vines producing top-quality fruit, well-stocked cellars, state-of-the-art equipment and a
fully operational winery with “strong Parker points” — referring to Robert Parker, the world’s most influential wine critic. While some buyers may be primarily interested in enjoying the wine produced on their estate themselves, Baynes points out that with an average yield of 6,000 bottles per hectare (about 2.5 acres) of vineyard, “even a tiny estate produces much more than private consumption would cope with, even [by] the most ambitious of wine drinkers.”
“THE OENOPHILE INVESTOR HAS OPTIONS INCLUDING TUSCANY IN ITALY, ARGENTINA’S MENDOZA AND THE NAPA VALLEY, TO NAME A FAMOUS FEW.”

If you can sell your wine for a higher price than its production cost, there’s an opportunity to earn a significant return on your investment; just look to Château Miraval, the Provençal vineyard estate purchased by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in 2011, whose rosé has become a major success. In addition to wine sales, Baynes notes that wine tourism offers another revenue stream for the entrepreneurial-minded. “Wine tourism has been the strongest growth sector of the market in recent years,” he tells us. “In this regard, we see Bordeaux in the same place that Napa Valley was about 20 years ago, as owners and investors look to make their estates more tourist-friendly with wine tastings, tours and accommodations.” Baynes tells us that this summer, Baccarat Hotels & Residences plans to break ground on a new ultra-luxury wine- and food-focused resort located at the historic Château Carignan wine estate. The property will have hotel rooms along with resort residences, and one key feature will be a wine club where “members can buy into the ownership of the winery itself and have access to one of the most
prestigious wine collections [and] cellars anywhere in the world, from which they can consume and collect to their hearts desire.” Bordeaux’s scenery and landscapes are “truly stunning,” Baynes says, “steeped with history — think Joan of Arc and Eleanor of Aquitaine — and medieval châteaux, as well as the more common 18th and 19th century architecture that reflected the wine boom at that time.” And in addition to the region’s dozen or so Michelin-starred restaurants, “it’s one hour’s drive to the best beaches and surfing in Europe and just two hours to the ski slopes, all set in the number one wine market in the world,” he notes. As for smart buys in vineyard real estate, Baynes points to the tiny appellations immediately next to the world-famous Saint-Émilion such as Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion, Montagne Saint-Émilion, Lussac Saint-Émilion and Puisseguin Saint-Émilion, which “all carry the Saint-Émilion name and brand and have all the attributes of their big brother next door, but in our opinion are underpriced and an excellent purchase right now.” Buying and running a successful winery are of course two very different things.

“OWNERS AND INVESTORS ARE MAKING THEIR ESTATES MORE TOURIST-FRIENDLY WITH WINE TASTINGS, TOURS AND ACCOMMODATIONS.”
In 2002 entrepreneur Kevin Buckler founded a boutique winery called Adobe Road in Petaluma, California, after looking at established wine properties elsewhere in Sonoma County and in nearby Napa. “I started out making wine as a hobby with a small circle of my close friends,” he tells us. “We’d come together and make a barrel of Cabernet or Zinfandel, just to enjoy amongst ourselves. After a few go-arounds, I thought, ‘let’s really do this!’ I bought out my partners, gave our project a name with Adobe Road Winery, and got to work.” The main thing to remember, Buckler says, is that “wine is a complicated, relationship-based business.” In that regard it resembles Buckler’s other passion: racing. He has won first overall at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in addition to racking up three other wins at the legendary endurance race, and also scored a GT class win at Le Mans. He has more than 30 racing victories to his credit, mostly won at the wheel of various Porsche 911s. It’s a total he is constantly adding to with his successful team, The Racers Group (TRG). “I run my winery in a similar way to how I run my racing team,” he tells us, “and I know that, to survive in the racing world, you have to do more than one thing — we service race cars, we transport them all over the country, we do professional events, corporate hospitality and much more. It’s no different with Adobe Road; to make the business a success, a competitive spirit is key.”
That’s evident in his recent Adobe Road offering, The Racing Series, an acclaimed collection of four wines inspired by his illustrious career in motorsports, named Shift, Apex, Redline and The 24. Shift, a blend of Zinfandel, Barbera, Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Carignane, comes in a bottle with a metal label that resembles the gated gearshift on a classic Ferrari, while the cork is topped with a five-speed shift knob. Redline, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Malbec, has a label that is silkscreened with a vintage tachometer representing Buckler’s very first racing victory. Apex, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petite Sirah, is decorated with the apex section of a racetrack on the label. And The 24, a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Malbec, features a metallic Rolex Daytona-style chronograph, in tribute to the timepieces awarded to winning drivers at the race. In October, he broke ground on the first-ever waterfront winery in downtown Petaluma, complete with a tasting room, banquet facilities, corporate meeting suites, an exclusive wine club-only VIP area, and a car museum. Call it the California version of what Baccarat reportedly plans to do at Château Carignan. “It gives us a chance to not only embrace what’s happening in the industry but where the industry is heading,” Buckler says. Something aspiring wine estate owners would do well to take note of. ■ MAXI M.COM.AU

a quick story – one day on the island my friend and I went for a walk on the beach. I had seen something small moving around in the distance and said to my friend, “Let’s check it out.” So, we walked up to this object and it actually happened to be a baby crocodile. My first instinct wasn’t to wonder where mummy crocodile is, but to pick it up.
ey, Isabelle, congrats on your MAXIM cover. How does it feel? It feels super surreal. It didn’t actually sink in properly for a few weeks that I’d be getting my very own cover and feature in such a prestigious magazine. My cheeks were still so sore a week after from smiling so much – it’s so overwhelming. I can’t wait to show off all of my hard work to the world and share this moment with my family and close friends.
What the…?! Basically, I tried picking it up, but it nearly had my pinky for lunch. I took my shirt off, obviously wearing bikinis underneath, placed my shirt over the baby croc so it couldn’t see where I was coming from and picked it up and took it to school the
next day for show and tell. I also spent a lot of time fishing, camping and riding motorbikes on the island. After living on the island, I moved to Broome in WA, finished Year 12 playing sports and living it up in the small tropical town. Once I was 19, I moved to Cairns for a year and now I’m located in the beautiful Gold Coast. Wow, the Croc Whisperer! You’re the current MAXIM Australian Swimwear Model of the Year (ASMY). What went through your head when you won the title? I was thinking, “Holy shit, I just won! All of the hard work has finally paid off!” It was such a crazy week. On the Thursday
“I’M VERY NATURAL IN MY APPEARANCE, AND MY PERSONALITY, AND I ALSO ALWAYS TRY TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.”
Tell us about this shoot. This was a long one – 15 hours to be exact – and I was just getting over the flu! The overall shoot was an amazing experience, though — from the make-up/ hair, location, photographer and the impressive car which has now turned into my dream car. I was basically born into the car scene – I’m a bit of a revhead – if it’s fast and luxurious you have my attention. My other favourite part was wearing all the different cheeky swimwear. Well, you look extremely gorgeous. When do you feel sexy? Thank you! I feel my sexiest when I’m lounging around wearing my favourite red lingerie. What’s your best asset? I think my face is my best asset. I was always told from a young age I have a really pretty face and I’d break some hearts when I got older. Tell us a bit about yourself and your life story so far. Well, I have quite a story behind me. I was born in Canberra and moved away with family when I was 12 to a remote island in the Arafura Sea called Elcho Island. I spent a couple of years living there where I learnt a lot about my culture. Living on the island really opened my eyes to knowing who I wanted to be and with what morals I wanted to live by. I’ll tell you

which, was the swimwear judging, I actually tore a ligament in my ankle right after it finished. I went to the doctor that night, got it bandaged up, took some painkillers and rested it. On the final night I was actually walking onstage with a very sore ankle, but I soldiered through and did my best – apparently my best was enough! Why do you think the judging panel chose you? Maybe because of the way I walk with confidence? I’m very natural in my appearance and my personality, and I also always try to do something different onstage. For example my signature “strip it off” move where the surprise is underneath because we all love to know what’s underneath the hood, right? I’m also very happy and bubbly around everyone and really just happy in general. Describe your overall experience competing in the MAXIM ASMY. I won’t lie, it was very stressful but it was totally worth it. I always see girls I know, who I competed with, and they have become lifetime friends. Everything from the staff to the accommodation to the venue – it was all perfect.
What advice would you give the contestants taking part in the MAXIM ASMY later this year? My best advice would be to go into it, and any competition you ever compete in, and don’t expect to place. Go in with the confidence like you’ve already won but with the attitude that you’re no better than any of the other contestants. What’s been happening since you took out the illustrious title? I have been pushing out the photo shoots, working with brands and just enjoying the title of being the MAXIM Australian Swimwear Model of the Year. What do you like to do for fun? I’m a very mixed girl but in my free time I like tanning on the beach, fishing, taking my beautiful German Shepherd puppy out for walks, applying make-up, gaming – it’s usually Fortnite – and hanging out with my bestie. What have you learned about men over the years? Actually, it’s surprising how many men can be romantic and thoughtful – they aren’t as confusing as we assume they are.
How could a man win you over? Treat me like a queen, listen to me – even if you don’t think it’s important, make me feel safe, make me laugh so hard that you bring out my ugly laugh and never try to tell me I can’t wear that short skirt! Describe your perfect date? I find it really romantic if a man organises a dinner and movie date – even if it’s a drivein theatre sitting in the back of the car with takeaway. Finish it off with Nutella-covered strawberries and maybe we could use the Nutella in another way later on in the night. What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you? Always be true to who you are and never let anyone change that. Have morals and have the integrity to live by them. What’s next for you? I want to head over to America and see what they have to offer. Plus, grow my business as a model and swimwear designer – I’m looking to start my own business in the next couple of years. Obviously, I want to move onto bigger and better things with modelling and I can’t wait to do so! ■

HIGH NOTE How Singer Vehicle Design reimagines Porsche 911s for gentleman racers... BY D U CAN Q U I N N

he late 1980s. Somewhere in the wilds of the English countryside, I get my hands on a tired Volkswagen Mk1 Golf. Not the sprightly GTI of legend. Rather a wheezing 1.3 GLS on bicycle tires. In keeping with its wine-coloured paint job, it drinks more oil than petrol, but still makes the 10.5km twisty country lane run to school in under six minutes. Complete with hedgerow scratches, tire squeals, fading brakes and shaking heads from other petrified road-users. The four-speed manual stick shift works overtime searching a gearbox that feels like a wooden spoon stirring drippy cake mix.

Meanwhile the London City Boys wear red braces, pinstripe suits, flash watches, and speed by in bright red Porsche 911 Turbos. A piece of kit all wheeler-dealers aspired to. Not because they loved driving them. But because of the message they sent. Porsches would slowly go from being badly-engineered Volkswagen Beetle offshoots, to wide-boy 911 whale tail widowmakers, to docile Turbo S doctor’s chariots. Somehow a car that never should have shone became the shining example of Calvin Coolidge’s most memorable motto. Persistence won. And I am thankful it did. For without Ferdinand Porsche’s greatest creation having survived
through the decades, Singer Vehicle Design founder and creative director Rob Dickinson would never have picked up a wrench and decided to hotrod the car to the point where “everything is important.” I first came across Singer in the company of a friend based in Monaco. Sadly I never got to take his restored Porsche 911, the “Monaco” commission, for a ride. But I often pondered whether the reality could ever match up to the level of hype surrounding Dickinson’s shop. In a world of sparkling new machines costing more than a country estate in rural France, why would someone want an old Porsche tinkered with by an English ex-rocker based in Los Angeles?
I am trying to be critical as I answer that question both for myself, and for the schoolboy inside me. As the sum of money required to persuade Mr. Dickinson to focus his time and attention could be applied to the combined purchase of a spanking new Lamborghini Huracán and a Bentley Continental GT, with pocket money left over for Cars & Coffee. So how on Earth is this even possibly a smart thing to consider? For I can categorically tell you that it is. With only one caveat: You must share a schoolboy’s appreciation of all things analog. Of a driving experience so pure it literally sings. There are some things that money

AUTO FOCUS cannot buy. For everything else, there is Amex. If you have one of the fancy black ones you could do a lot worse than trying your luck with Rob, then sitting and waiting until a car comes your way, which will take control of the situation much like Mike Tyson at his peak. As Iron Mike liked to say, “everybody has a plan… until they get punched in the mouth.” Well, a Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer is that proverbial punch in the mouth. Frankly, it will floor you, your mates, and every other character you know with pretensions of having a fancy car. Provided only that you love driving. Heel and toe, precision gear change, dialed-in sort of driving. Man and machine in perfect har mony driving. Not 395km/h in a straight line down a closed road in Nevada driving. More like slightly in excess (well, perhaps completely ridiculously in excess) of the speed limit on a country lane designed by a chap with a penchant for spirited driving. This car inspires a desire to take it places. Not to show it off. But to selfishly drink in with greedy pleasure the magnificent feeling of having caught a unicorn in the wild and gotten away with riding it. The PCH, the Stelvio Pass, Edinburgh to Islay, and any num ber of bonkers trips could be had in this thing. All with a shit-eating grin spread so far from ear to ear you may just be mistaken for a sociopathic Joker. It is simply that good. And you honestly do want to drive it like you stole it. I was lucky enough to get behind the wheel of one of the newest commissions delivered, dubbed the Sine Qua Non restored by Singer. Entrusted to Rob’s care as a 1990 Porsche 911 964 C2, the car was then stripped back to the frame before receiving the Singer Vehicle Design treatment. This is the Wolverine of Porsche 911s.
“THIS IS THE WOLVERINE OF PORSCHE 911S. STRENGTHENED. LIGHTENED. UPGRADED EVERYTHING.” Strengthened. Lightened. Upgraded everything. And clothed in any number of color and detail combinations inside and out to your spec. It’s 4.0 litres of prime German technik, reimagined and reengineered to a sticker somewhere far north of Singer’s starting restoration price of US$475,000 plus the donor car. As you would hope with a machine of this caliber, its owner is not a bean-counting

AUTO FOCUS wretch of a man who wants to put it in a glass chamber. Despite the fact that it will no doubt appreciate at a higher rate of knots than the S&P 100. He’s quite the character. With some GT racing chops and a penchant for experiences. Which he got in spades when he bought this. That is for sure. The Sine Qua Non is a thinly-disguised 1970s-style rock & roll rocket ship expertly forged into a whole that is so much more than the sum of its magnificent parts. Solid. Planted. Quick. From the handbuilt Ed Pink Racing Engine, to the retro perfect gauges, Getrag G50 six-speed stick shift gearbox, and tactile ebony wood gear knob, everything is thoughtful. Everything is right. Balanced. Purposeful. Tight. No more, and no less, than is required for the balance that is perfection. I could continue to wax lyrical about the man-hours spent building this car, or the meticulous attention to detail and perfection of execution that has gone into its realisation; but I won’t. It is not that all the technical magic is irrelevant, or that the incredible focus and
hard work that has gone into creating such aesthetic and engineering excellence is unrecognised. It is simply that that is to miss the point. This is not a car. This is a means of transportation for your soul. And all of the in-depth technical improvements and subtle aesthetic tweaks are what make the magic. Without them this would just be another very expensive toy. But it isn’t. It is a time machine that takes you to places beyond the wildest dreams of the kid inside us all.
Singer’s founder and creative director ROB DICKINSON talks philosophy, performance and Porsches BY D U CAN Q U I N N
In 2009 Rob Dickinson, former singer and guitarist for ’90s Brit rock band the Catherine Wheel, founded Singer Vehicle Design in California. Before embarking on a music career, he had studied industrial design and did a stint at Lotus. A longtime car guy, the first ride he upgraded was a 1969 Porsche 911E, known as the “Brown Bomber,” which he made into a “café racer-style 911 that I could drive around L.A. and take to the track.” The overwhelming response to the car led to the birth of Singer. Why focus only on air-cooled Porsche 911s? That’s testament to the [air-cooled] 911 being such a special car, not just for the aesthetics and the driving experience but in terms of its heritage at iconic races like
the Targa Florio and Le Mans. On road, track and rally stages it’s won everything, and that DNA makes the car such an engaging machine. We’re around them all day and we still want to drive them home. Do you still work on the cars yourself? I don’t wrench on the cars now — though in the early days it was all hands on deck! Now Singer has expert teams working across areas including engineering, procurement, fabrication, mechanical assembly, electrical systems, interior trimming, quality assurance, and test driving, as well as client relations, sales and marketing and more. I have a design team and studio now and remain intimately involved in the overall direction of the company. What will be Singer’s legacy? The Singer philosophy is to distill the essential elements of an experience like driving — what makes a car deliver an emotional connection, whether it’s visually or dynamically. We’re guided by the mantra “everything is important,” so we’ll go to whatever level of detail is required by the collaboration with our clients. And we go beyond the mechanical objects themselves. What we have started to call the Singer experience is our program to provide clients with bespoke experiences centered around their cars. Any legacy will be built on insisting that all these elements are recognised and preserved so that truly engaging, jewel-like machines are around for a long time yet. ■

science and highly bespoke services. The Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer represents what happens when that philosophy is applied to an iconic aircooled sportscar. Carbon fibre bodywork, enhanced engine performance, highly evolved dynamics, and the ability to tailor the dynamic response and aesthetics of your car to suit your preference for touring, fast-road or track performance... So I think there are elements of both curating and perfecting in what we do. We understand the heritage and perhaps we are underlining and introducing some of these aspects to a new audience for the first time.

TOP TIP K<5H MCI B998 HC ?BCK The idea that bodyweight exercises can build muscle might seem foreign to some people, given that their perception is based on what they see on cheesy workout DVDs or fitspo stuff on social media. The truth is bodyweight exercises can be extremely effective for building muscle when done correctly. It’s just about knowing how to create enough resistance and time under tension to stimulate muscle growth. Here are a couple of simple and effective bodyweight methods you can do anywhere, anytime to help you get some sizable gains.
Make each hold as hard as possible by creating as much tension as you can. If you’re holding a position in a push-up, try to “squeeze inward” in an effort to bring your hands closer together, even though they won’t move. In a squat, try to “screw your feet into the floor” by attempting to externally rotate them, or “press the floor with the toes” and “tense the abs” as if you were going to get punched in the stomach. In a pull-up, flex your biceps and upper back hard by trying to pull the bar apart. These actions will not only create more muscle fiber recruitment, they’ll also develop your capacity to contract and feel key muscles. That way, when you get back to lifting weights, these muscles will respond a lot better.
85F89B '$ʔ%$ʔ'$ This method makes a set more difficult and increases the time under tension of a movement by lengthening the duration of the eccentric (lowering) phase. You start by doing a 30-second long eccentric phase, then immediately do 10 normal reps. After your tenth rep, finish with one final 30-second eccentric, after which you stand up (or push/ pull yourself up). You can do this with any exercise but if you want to be truly humbled, give it a go with Bulgarian Split Squats. This is one 90-second set. And anyone can do anything for 90 seconds right?
TOP TIP Still control the eccentric on the normal reps — two seconds down is a good target.

It’s that mental edge that helps you cope better, be more consistent, more focused, more in control and more confident. I suggest starting your day with a two-minute freezing cold shower. ICONOCLAST How Giorgio Armani built an empire from the bottom up... BY KE ITH G O R D O N

I
n an era in which celebrities, influencers and the hottest young designers seem to dominate the attention of the fashion world, Giorgio Armani stands apart. While his name has become synonymous with exquisite design over the past four decades, his path to the pinnacle of the industry started from the very bottom of the mountain, a refreshing difference from the instant stardom dominating today’s fashion world. Following a stint in the Italian military postWWII, and uncompleted time in university, Armani found work at the prestigious Milan department store La Rinascente, working at first as a window dresser, then a lower rung of the fashion world’s hierarchy. But his talent, and his eye for design, would not go unnoticed and before long he was asked to join the design team of the influential Nino Cerruti in 1964. As his skills developed, he was encouraged by a friend, Sergio Galeotti, to expand into freelance design work, enabling him to express his individual ideas without the pressure of running a brand and the business behind such an enterprise. But by 1975, Armani and his friend Galeotti felt the time was right and together they founded the fashion house in his name, soon producing both mens and womenswear that took Europe by storm. Understatement and refinement were keys to Armani’s designs, as he explained to WWD, claiming “My vision was clear: I believed in getting rid of the artifice of clothing. I believed in neutral colours.” Embracing natural-fitting designs, and more restrained colour palettes, his apparel became must-have for the fashion-conscious of the European elite, and following his work appearing in trendsetting Hollywood films such as Richard Gere’s American Gigolo in 1980, and for the television program Miami Vice in the mid-80s, he began to conquer America just as he had previously thrived in Europe. In the space of a decade his fashion house had gone global and the sky was the limit. However, tragedy struck just as the brand was reaching new heights, as Armani’s longtime personal and business partner, Galeotti, fell victim to AIDS-related complications, the epidemic of the time, passing away in 1985 and leaving the Italian designer to handle both the design and business sides of the burgeoning global brand. Overcoming this tragedy, Armani used the lessons he had learned in his long climb up the fashion hierarchy to not only maintain the business side of his venture, but to expand it to levels unmatched by his peers in the world of high fashion. Ironically, it was his early years in a modest family that led him to dream of, and create, an empire of luxury and splendour. He explained this duality to Harper’s Bazaar in one of his few public interviews. “My family was a modest family with modest opportunities,” he admitted, “so I basically constructed a world for myself. And that’s why I love this job so much, because it has allowed me to build a world to which I never belonged — a world that I saw in films, and that I read about in books. I built my own way of being.” Today, Giorgio Armani, who partly grew up in an Italy ruled by Mussolini’s fascist government and came of age during the economic struggle that was the postwar period, has an estimated net worth of around US$10 billion, and his name is synonymous with design, luxury
and the highest level of fashion desirability. While his keen eye and prodigious output of trendsetting collections is certainly a large part of his success, the truth is that since his business partner’s death, Armani has taken the brand to heights even Galeotti likely couldn’t have dreamed. By the end of the 1990s, Armani had grown to operate some 200 retail locations globally, with revenues estimated to be around US$2 billion a year. But the Italian iconoclast wasn’t satisfied. His name had become globally renowned as a catchphrase for luxury and design, so Armani began expanding into new industries. His first restaurant opened in 1998, and by 2010 he was being drawn into the hotel and hospitality business, bringing not only his design sense and style to his projects, but a brand that is trusted by the global elite to deliver the epitome of refined luxury regardless of industry. Armani Hotels in Dubai (in the spectacular Burj Khalifa) and Milan, in addition to worldwide cafés, restaurants and clubs, have managed to expand the beloved brand without diluting its reputation, or distracting from its fashion-centric core business. He was even consulted on the design of an apartment for music star John Mayer, evidence of Armani’s impact far from its original fashion and clothingbased origins. Speaking in another rare interview with the Financial Times in 2017, the notoriously private Armani explained how his concept of fashion and design extends well beyond the catwalk. “Style, for me, is a mood that can be applied to everything. I’ve always thought fashion is much more than just clothes: it is a way of being. Expanding my vision to different fields, yet still striving to create something useful and durable, I can reach a wider audience.” Even the Armani fashion offerings have expanded under Giorgio’s leadership, with numerous units including Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani, and Armani Exchange, each focused on a different demographic of client, and ranging from the highest end of haute couture to jeans and casual wear. In the process giving even those with modest resources the ability to wear fashion from one of the world’s most famous designers, perhaps a nod to his own limited resources growing up. He’s also expanded into furnishings, fragrances, beauty products, and specialty foods, utilising licensing to leverage the power of his name and brand to expand his retail opportunities even wider. Armani, despite his worldwide fame and reputation, is famously indifferent to personal accolades or media attention. Again, bucking the trend of celebrity designers who put themselves front and centre, he prefers to let his work represent him to the world, shunning most public appearances and interviews. But even if Armani is willing to eschew the spotlight himself, don’t let that fool you into thinking that he isn’t still in control of the empire that bears his name. During his conversation with the Financial Times, the octogenarian icon explained that behind the scenes, everything is still under his direct, and unwavering control. “To run an enterprise like this, every little detail counts: it’s like nurturing a baby,” he proudly declared. “You cannot overlook or underestimate the tiniest detail, or the whole endeavor will fall apart. It is invariably me who points out mistakes and comes up with solutions. I trust the people around me, but I’m the only one making the final decisions.” ■

THE ENDS OF THE EARTH What true ultra-luxury bespoke adventure travel means now... BY J A R E D PAU L S T E R N

ant to hop on a private jet, fly to an exotic destination and have an over-the-top vacation? All it takes these days is a decent credit limit. Thanks to a sort of dumbing down of luxury travel in recent years, what was once reserved for the elite traveller is now accessible to almost anyone, as brands try to appeal to a larger audience and, as a result, end up alienating top -tier clients. “Luxury brands often miss the opportunities to reach the highest echelon of travellers by serving downmarket experiences,” as WealthX, a data company that curates intelligence on wealthy individuals

from around the world, notes. “It’s the result of a troubling trend of mass market luxury, standardised luxury travel marketing [that] appeals to both high net worth [HNW] and ultra-high net worth [UHNW] individuals, and the homogenisation of luxury goods and services across these tiers of wealth.” The distinction is an important one as the HNW category includes those with a net worth of US$1 million to more than US$29 million while to qualify for UHNW status you must have US$30 million or more to your name. Take for example a recent article in National Geographic UK that gushed that “Luxury travel operators are increasingly going to the ends
of the earth to curate completely personalised trips to inaccessible destinations…. Travel agents have been elevated to travel designers who can arrange access to places that would be out of bounds to most of us.” We picture said “travel designers” with sleek offices dotted with lots of Italian leather chairs but little in the way of true bespoke offerings. Exactly the kind of hype Wealth-X attributes to “a slew of societal, cultural and technological trends” that have unfolded in recent years, including the “ubiquitous exposure of digital platforms like Instagram and the rise of the sharing economy,” wherein every individual wants an
Instagram feed that mirrors that of their favourite celebrity. All of which has led true bespoke adventure specialists to redefine the very concept of luxury travel. These days, luxury, says London-based Momentum Adventure founder Matthew Robertson, “is about knowledge. We’re able to open doors to the inaccessible and make it possible. We strive for our clients to have an intrinsic experience.” Momentum specialises in true luxury bespoke adventures that are tailored to each client’s exacting desires, some of which can cost US$1 million or more and are therefore only within reach of the UHNW set. Many of Robertson’s clients turn

ADEVENTURE to him after they’ve exhausted the limits of luxury travel agencies — sorry, “travel designers” — and their imported office furnishings. But the actual amount spent or even the flag planted on a remote peak isn’t as important as making the experience truly once-in-a-lifetime. “It’s less about a goal such as climbing Mount Everest and more about truly engaging with the place you’re in,” Robertson tells us. And so much the better if it’s off the beaten path. “That could be Sweden, Namibia, Colorado or Scotland. The [true] luxury is the memories you create on the journey. That’s not to say our clients don’t use [private] jets and yachts. They most certainly do. But how they travelled or where they stayed is never what they talk about over dinner when they get home.” The experiences that are trending these days for Momentum clients include “submarines, culture immersion, challenges, food, foraging in the wild, [and] unique wildlife experiences,” Robertson tells us. In every locale “we work with the best of the best in the outdoors,” he notes, “from archaeologists and conservationists to ex-special forces and the highest accredited mountain guides and logisticians…. Momentum has spent 30 years building a global network of these people. Without an amazing team, a complicated trip
Momentum’s bespoke submarine excursions vary, but Robertson says you should expect to pay US$100,000-plus to explore the ocean’s depths in style. Momentum is one of the few companies privately chartering subs in the Azores, a volcanic Portuguese archipelago in the mid-Atlantic known for its lush landscapes. The company only does these trips by special request, and attractions have included an underwater volcano and a German submarine sunk in 1942, which has been lying mostly undisturbed in over 2,000 ft. of water; the subs have been know to go below 3,000 ft., a depth that very few people have experienced. If land-based adventures are more your speed, for around US$1.2 million and up Momentum will set you up to compete in — and possibly even win — the legendary Dakar Rally, a true off-road endurance test that can make or break vehicle manufacturers’ reputations. The 2020 version of the iconic race will be talking place in Saudi Arabia for the first time, making it even more of an incomparable adventure. Momentum’s Dakar experience includes your own custom Land Rover Defender-based 4x4 designed by UK-based Bowler motorsport as well as all travel, accommodations, driver training, race support, administration and logistics.

The company has been known to use Triton subs, the “world leader” in private submarines, whose two-person 7500 series underwater crafts reportedly started at US$5.8 million. The cost of

“When we first talk to someone, they generally have no set ideas,” Robertson says, “only a desire to expand their horizons…. Our clients are looking for an authentic, inspirational experience. They want to do something truly different. Which is exactly what we offer — a bespoke adventure that happens just once: for the client.” Few men know more about creating truly inspirational travel experiences than Abercrombie & Kent founder and cochairman Geoffrey Kent, widely credited with introducing the first luxury

African photographic safari in 1962. “From the beginning, I’ve believed that true luxury is the privilege of discovery, adventure, relaxation and insight, enjoyed in a context that perfectly suits the experience,” Kent tells MAXIM. “Seamless service, safety and security are a given. But it is the unexpected that inspires a sense of wonder and elevates an adventure into a true luxury experience.” Kent credits his success to an “adventure by day and comfort at night” philosophy. “Our guests travel to spectacular places in remote destinations with the finest wilderness guides and A&K’s trademark blend of privileged access, airtight organisation and outstanding service,” he says. Over the past decade, he adds, “the definition of luxury has changed. It has become much more flexible with an emphasis on experiences and personalized service, rather than the mere physical trappings of luxury.”
Now, Kent says, “we find our guests are doing extensive research online and have a better idea of the kinds of experiences they want, requiring more customisation and knowledge than ever before. But when it comes to making the final decision, they want the peace of mind that comes from knowing their itinerary has been planned by a specialist, someone with firsthand knowledge and experience.” Four years ago, Kent introduced his most impressive offering yet, Inspiring Expeditions, “for the modern adventurer who wants to explore the most spectacular lands and oceans on the planet, and meet the extraordinary people who live there.” For starters, “we recreated Jacques Cousteau’s famous expedition to Palau aboard an exclusively chartered superyacht,” he recounts. “Our guests enjoyed some of the finest scuba diving and snorkelling in the world. Then I led an expedition around the world by private jet with stops on the Hawaiian

“I challenged myself to curate a new route that included destinations I’ve been fascinated with but haven’t had the opportunity to visit, such as Eritrea for its unique architecture; Benin, one of the epicentres of African voodoo; and Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil, an incredible landscape of white sand dunes dotted with ponds of crystalclear waters,” Kent explains. “This journey is not about checking items off a list,” Kent notes. “It is about discovering new experiences in destinations that most travellers completely overlook, and doing so in a way that never sacrifices comfort and style.” Try doing that at your local travel agent, no matter how many Italian leather chairs they have scattered around the place. ■

LEADING MAN
DOLL FACE
Actor CHARLIE BARNETT is a multifaceted marvel... BY J O R DAN R I E F E
M
aybe he’s not quite the man of a thousand faces, but actor Charlie Barnett is showing at least three at the moment. He plays Natasha Lyonne’s time-warp confidante, Alan Zaveri, on Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning series, Russian Doll; John Diggle, Jr., the neglected son of two vigilantes, on the CW series, Arrow; as well as Gabe the eccentric-advisorhealer on Netflix’s serial killer thriller, You. “The best actors are the ones who can play a lot of different things,” Barnett tells us. Not to brag, but he did attend the prestigious The Juilliard School and not too long after graduating landed a breakthrough role as firefighter/ paramedic Peter Mills on Chicago Fire. “If you’re a chameleon, it’s a credit to your craft. It’s also fun. My biggest fear is being the same person every time.” In only its first season, Russian Doll
has taken home a number of awards and represents the highpoint of Barnett’s career so far. When we caught up with him, he was coming out of an audition for Happiest Season with Kristen Stewart to be directed by Clea DuVall. Auditions are easy for Barnett. In fact, he did his first one for Russian Doll without even realising it. He met Lyonne at a bachelorette party he was hosting for his friend, Samira Wiley, her co-star on Orange is the New Black. “She was sober but I was very drunk at the time,” Barnett says of his first encounter with Lyonne, who co-created Russian Doll in addition to starring in it. “I’m since sober after coming into her world. She’s changed my life a lot. I told her about me being adopted and my issues with depression and drug abuse, family dynamics, love and loss. We went through everything.” At the time, Barnett thought he was only bending the ear of a new friend.
Charlie Barnett stars in Netflix’s Russian Doll and You, as well as the CW series Arrow 8 6
MAXI M.COM.AU
But months later, she called him to see if he’s audition for the part of Alan Zaveri, who like Lynonne’s character, Nadia is stuck in a loop, a la Groundhog Day, this time dying and being reborn again. Lyonne has spoken of the show as a cathartic response to her recovery from heroin addiction followed by a near-fatal heart condition. Barnett and his sister grew up partly on a sailboat in Florida, the children of a boat builder from Minnesota and an acupuncturist from Utah. The Chicago White Sox trained in Sarasota at the time, making a fan of Barnett from an early age. Olympic diving became his next obsession. However, he says, “I witnessed a diving accident when I was young and was drawn away,” only to get “into Formula 1 and cars/car racing in general.” There was also a brief flirtation with boxing — he calls it “the hardest workout I’ve been through in my life.” Having varied interests and versatile skills has been to Barnett’s advantage in his career, artfully defying pigeonholing in an industry that pigeonholes everyone. A man of mixed race with white parents, he is an advocate for a myriad of issues from women’s and LGBTQ+ rights to veterans’ rights and mental health awareness . “I’ll probably get some shit for saying this, but yes, there needs to be space made for people of different colours, people of different races and people of different sexual orientation and gender. We always need to hear those stories from them,” says Barnett. “But that isn’t saying that someone who isn’t part of that experience doesn’t have an opinion that is worthwhile. I”m frustrated by that part of the conversation that says straight men can’t be part of this. Shutting those kinds of doors is the main problem we had in the first place. The pool needs to get bigger but that doesn’t mean that people need to be eliminated from the conversation.” Barnett, who lives in Los Angeles, often finds the entertainment business to be a somewhat hypocritical liberal enclave. “They have to see that they can make money off of it. And as much as I say f—k you for that having to be the qualification, okay, I understand you run a business and that’s your job,” he says of an industry that has long put “business” before “show.” He recognises that Lyonne serves as a creative buffer who enables a series like Russian Doll to flourish away from the prying eyes of note-giving bean counters; a relatively unfettered creative experience he isn’t likely to experience often. “It is something that is challenging, risky and scary for me,” he says of the show. “I feel proud of it. I feel really, really proud of it. I almost feel like just having that, I can walk away.” ■

ating From Home. Yes, it’s a thing. I’ve had countless messages from people asking how on earth singles are meant to meet anyone in this COVID-19 climate? What’s lockdown done to all the solo peeps who are expressing to me their stupidity for not shacking up with a special someone earlier? “I’m going to be single for the next six months!” Sure, sex toy industries are booming but what else is there today besides shave the carrot and watch Netflix, do home workouts and eat? Some dating apps now have WHO (World Health Organisation) guidelines and recommendations for safe dating. then really get to know each other before you hook up or share sacred space. Now, we are forced to take our time and dating via video and phone calls and messaging, because we basically can’t meet! Relationships app Hinge share a notice with your sign in which explains and encourages Zoom calls, FaceTime or any means of virtual connection. In fact 70% of Hinge users are totally down for that, they’re claiming. Bumble already has a feature where you can video chat on their app without giving out your phone number. Instagram has the same. The big change in our new world is beginning and real connection is brewing. If you do meet up with someone, know not only is it not safe in terms of possible COVID-19 contraction but can you also see the importance for protecting yourself with regards to other viruses? The condom industry is another which isn’t closing down
anytime soon. It seems nobody wants a baby named Corona in nine months’ time, no matter where she was conceptualised. I was on Instagram and a follower slid into my DMs asking if I’ll be his “Quarantine”, pronounced like “Valentine”. Some potential partners are marketing themselves with rolls of toilet paper on home gyms in their profile pictures. It seems it’s the new currency! Others are writing in their bio that they won’t meet you if you’ve recently been overseas, and that their idea of a romantic date is to video call while you both do your “nothings”. So, if you get to second base and that video call and you have a COVID-19 date, the big question is: what do you wear? Quarantine Chic (AKA tracksuit and pyjamas) or Instaglam? If you do have a casual relationship that started pre-lockdown, now is the time to ask for exclusivity. For the rest of us — “Will you be my Quarandate?” ■

How do you want to die? Painlessly and very, very slowly. Any deathbed confessions? I’m a nose picker… and I know all the words to three John Denver songs. What’s your last meal? A degustation menu from Sydney’s Tetsuya’s restaurant — just keep the courses coming, thanks. Are you going to Heaven or Hell? Like every other creature on this planet, I’m returning to dust and going nowhere. But for the purposes of the argument, let’s say Heaven. What do you say to God? And here’s the argument. First, I’d say, “Well, this is a surprise, but it doesn’t change the fact that religion is the root of all evil.” If I hadn’t been sent to the hothouse downstairs by then, I’d finish up with, “Stephen Fry told me to ask you why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world that is so full of injustice and pain? Thanks for your time.” Which legendary people will you hang with in the afterlife? I’m tipping my great mate Rebecca Wilson has a never-ending lunch booking at one of the better restaurants. I hope Garry Shandling does an eternal version of The Larry Sanders Show, with guest appearances from David Bowie and Prince.
