hello

Set the tone Those with an affinty for Italian design should head straight to this home by Fabio Fantolino, who designed it for his family. I can’t get enough of the rich colour palette and ’70s aesthetic. To see more of this project, turn to p78.

WE OFTEN EXTOL THE VIRTUES of creating a sanctuary inside our homes. But right now, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than outdoors. My decorating to-do list and shopping cart can wait – all I need is a picnic basket and travel rug. As summer approaches, I predict we’ll be savouring every opportunity to spend time outside. That might inspire you to update your outdoor furniture, get stuck into the garden, start an exterior project, or simply serve meals al fresco. Design that invites the outdoors in is the thread that ties the homes in this edition together. If there’s one thing that defines Australian living, it’s our desire for open spaces and the ease with which we connect our homes to our natural environment. For example, the house in Noosa (p66) pays homage to its coastal location with a layout that welcomes effortless movement, natural light and outdoor entertaining. Apertures, access to terraces and a seamless selection of materials create visual continuity between the exterior and interiors of the Melbourne home (p44), while the renovated holiday house (p118) draws on natural colours and textural finishes to bring the beach inside. Of course, we aren’t the only ones who like to make the most of our backyards. Just take a look at the garden-inspired home in Turin, Italy (p78). When I ask designers, artists and stylists where they find new ideas, the answer is almost always ‘travel’. But how do we fuel our creativity when we can’t wine and dine our way through Europe, or road-trip around America? This month’s shopping edit (p92) channels some of our favourite hotels, which are a unique source of international style inspiration With that, I sign off on this issue, my last as Acting Editor. It’s been a privilege to helm this magazine alongside such brilliant creatives, and to share my love of design with you.

Rustic romance Elegant timber floors and walls finished in finely textured clay by Studio Loho set a rich, evocative tone in this penthouse apartment by Banda Design Studio. Here in the living area, low-slung furniture is arranged on a Coral & Hive rug. The mid-century Brazilian easy chairs are by Joaquim Tenreiro. Brass side tables and vintage urns bring an extra layer of visual warmth and tactility to this timeless scheme. Business of design Edo Mapelli Mozzi, pictured opposite, is the CEO and creative director of Banda Design Studio, the team behind this unique new project in London’s Notting Hill. A

COUNTRY HOMES loom large in the collective imagination. Who among us hasn’t fantasised about trading a property in the suburbs for a cottage in the countryside, swapping a patch of grass for pastoral acreage, packing in slingback heels for a pair of R.M.Williams? Reminiscent of old timber furniture and hand-rendered finishes, country homes possess character that’s acquired over time, which is precisely the look and feel Banda Design Studio envisaged when designing this London apartment. By committing to such an evocative brief, the Banda team show that the warm, intimate ambience of a rural retreat in France can be reinterpreted in any home, anywhere – fields of grazing cows and sheep not included. Located on the fifth floor of a circa 1850 building, the Notting Hill apartment has access to a rooftop terrace, but the design ensures that same sense of breathing space is channelled inside, too. The open plan layout and high ceilings accentuated by traditional oak beams are redolent of a rustic chateau, while the calming colour palette comprised of moss green, olive and neutrals erring on the earthy side feels inspired by countryside scenery. The apartment’s warm ambience is enhanced by the masterful use of a clay finish on the walls. Created by Belgian design office Studio Loho, this natural, finely textured plaster is made from a blend of sands and unfired clays mixed with pigments and minerals, and the result is an artisanal, timeless effect that belies the recently developed apartment’s years. When recreating the style of a countryside house in a new home, it really comes down to the furnishings. Banda Design Studio took a refined, luxurious approach to this classic look, balancing rustic elements with buttery-soft textiles, stunning marble centrepieces, such as the Nero Marquina fireplace, and a mix of custom and vintage furniture. Natural and tactile, linen was chosen for the curtains, sofa upholstery and bed sheets, while brass hardware and light fixtures with brushed, aged and patinated finishes add an element of elegance. Of course, interiors inspired by the countryside must showcase wood in all its time-worn beauty. Timber is used to ground every room, from the American walnut kitchen doors to the mid-century cabinets and chairs, and bedroom furniture in oak, walnut and burl. Edo Mapelli Mozzi, CEO and founder of Banda, says that surrounded by natural materials and garden views, the owners “can seek solace high above Notting Hill and fully immerse themselves in the sense of overall calm”. R Hearth & soul The rustic grandeur of a French farmstead is recreated with high ceiling eves and oak beams in the living space. The eye is drawn to the Nero Marquina fireplace by Banda Design Studio and the mirror above. An abstract canvas by Hayden Alexander lends soft pastel tones to the neutral palette. Two sofas, one in cotton and linen (right) and a cream velvet design with brass feet (left), soften the expressive angles in the architecture and the tadelakt coffee table by Tuomas Markunpoika. loving Farm to table Original Pierre Jeanneret chairs surround a large dining table, which is draped in a linen tablecloth. Styled with statuesque candleholders and a bowl of lemons, the table setting exudes warm minimalism. Raku-Yaki triple sconces from Emmanuelle Simon, a simple pendant and linen curtains with a central droop complete the scheme. Mid-century moment Easy chairs by Joaquim Tenreiro and dining chairs by Pierre Jeanneret create visual continuity between the living and dining spaces (opposite, top). Distressed mirrors add to the perfectly imperfect country charm. State of the art The Banda kitchen designed by Obumex (opposite, bottom) takes a more modern approach to luxury living, with Gaggenau appliances and handsome dark grey marble. American walnut doors add wamth. Clay pots from local shops and markets around the world are displayed on benchtops and open shelves. A

Another dimension A spiral staircase leads to the apartment’s rooftop terrace. The vintage chest of drawers is from Horsch Interiors and the Gioielli wall sconce is by Giopato & Coombes. These curved designs complement the sweeping movement of the stairs. Quiet tones In the main bedroom (opposite, top), an artwork featuring layered pigment washes and pencil by Liam Stevens from Francis Gallery sets a dreamy tone. Beautiful tactile elements include a Stark rug, a Rose Uniacke oak bench and linen bedding. The wall lamps and side tables are by Apparatus. Natural embrace A cocoon-like retreat has been achieved in the TV room (opposite, bottom left), with walls covered in sage green fine wool and a custom designed corner sofa by Charles Zana called The Alexander, which is in Pierre Frey mohair. The artwork is Sleeping on a Sunday by Tracey Emin. Stone’s glow Marble makes a statement in the bathroom (opposite, bottom right). The tapware is from Waterworks and the wall lamp is from Kaia Lighting.

Natural selection Lightweight, refined and subtly curved, the Luxembourg chair combines the romance of Parisian gardens with the practicality of outdoor furniture. In 2004, the new design (pictured here in Citron) was awarded a VIA label, which recognises innovative, original products.

1923

THERE ARE 20.5 cultural attractions per square kilometre in Paris. With architectural icons and historical monuments around every corner, the city is a big open-air museum, but like many great works of art we tend to experience these landmarks through our camera viewfinder, or at the end of an outstretched selfie stick. While the Louvre is alluring and the Arc de Triomphe has its temptations, the real Parisian way to enjoy a piece of cultural heritage is to spend a few hours in a garden, in one of the green Luxembourg chairs. Green park chairs have been part of the Paris landscape since 1923, and the timeless design recalls the very French idea of the flâneur, which rose to popularity in 19th century literature. A flâneur, put simply, was a wanderer with little to do but observe urban life. As the city of love became a city of leisure-seekers, the French Senate began manufacturing seats for people to use in its outdoor spaces. When these ‘Senat’ chairs appeared in the Jardin du Luxembourg, they were embraced by studying university students, workers on lunch breaks, parents watching children play and intellectual types who gathered in the garden to read and debate. After decades of wear and weather exposure, it was time to replace the chairs. In 1990, the French Senate issued an invitation to tender, and Fermob, a French outdoor furniture company, won. Fermob made replicas with the same green iron frames and wooden armrests, and they were supplied to Luxembourg, Tuileries and Palais-Royal gardens. Though it embodied the simplicity of nature and enhanced the art of conversation, the original design wasn’t exactly ergonomic, and in 2001, Fermob approached designer Frédéric Sofia to give it an update. This collaboration evolved into a reverent reinvention of the Senat chair. Frédéric replaced the heavy iron with lightweight aluminium, which is so much easier to handle when moving to a sunny spot! Subtle curves, wider seats and slats that won’t cut into one’s thighs were added to increase comfort without altering the style, and the chair was given a symbolic new name: the Luxembourg. Like all hardy garden varieties, these Luxembourg chairs, benches, tables and stools have thrived around the world, from Paris parks to hotels, cafes and here, in our own backyards. R

The first Senat chairs were created in 1923 for the Jardin du Luxembourg by the Paris parks department workshops. Originally produced ad hoc, the early green metal designs had slight variations, however, their style has never changed.

1990

Fermob, an outdoor furniture brand known for its metal expertise, became the supplier of the Senat chairs. Replicas of the originals, Fermob’s chairs appeared in Tuileries, Luxembourg and Palais-Royal gardens.

2004

Fermob and designer Frédéric Sofia launched the Luxembourg aluminium outdoor furniture collection. Informed by the classic-style Senat chairs, the new designs featured functional improvements. The Luxembourg collection is now sold to the public and available in 24 shades.

2014

Luxembourg isn’t Fermob’s only iconic collection! Based on a metal folding chair that was patented in 1889 and popular among lemonade sellers in Paris, the Bistro chair is now produced by Fermob, and 2014 marked its 125th anniversary. You’ll find Bistro chairs in Paris cafes, as well as Bryant Park and Times Square in New York City. real living

EN GOLD BRAESIDE, VIC

space crush

This furniture brand’s studio and showroom is an enchanting extension of its design offering IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE the new En Gold studio in Melbourne’s Braeside was once an automotive workshop. “It would have been tricky for anyone to see through the oil-stained floors, dated tiled walls and vinyl-wrapped walls to see its potential,” says En Gold co-founder and director, Steffanie Ball. “But when I came to view the property, I formed an instant connection with not only the space, but the owner, who had lovingly grown his business within the building for generations. He often spoke of the ‘good luck’ the property has ingrained within its walls.” The studio is designed to be a continuation of the e-commerce interiors brand where Steffanie, together with husband and co-founder Matt Ball, can develop, photograph and display En Gold products. “It’s a space where we can create a touchpoint with our customers,” says Steffanie. Featuring gently textured walls, elegant archways, soft semi-sheer linen curtains and black aluminium framed partitions, the design is an intimate take on typical studio interiors. “The space is a calming oasis, the perfect canvas to showcase the En Gold furniture and homewares,” says Steffanie. “Staying true to the En Gold brand, the colour palette focuses on a tonal aesthetic. The overall intention was to create a creamy and soothing atmosphere that works harmoniously with the En Gold range.” Glass bricks, polished concrete, exposed beams, architectural track lighting and warm timber inject the minimal scheme with points of interest, and robust materials are softened by the curvaceous architectural features. Creature comforts Green is the only colour in Bree Johnson and Steve Rowley’s home, chosen for its connection to nature. “There’s a modern Australian vibe to this house and the green accents play to that,” says Bree. The Ligne Roset ‘Togo’ sofa in Lichen Green from Domo sits next to a ClassiCon ‘Diana A’ side table from Anibou. The rug is Desert Ecru from Halcyon Lake and the curtains are Mokum ‘Satori’ in Stonewash Oyster. The ceramic vase is from Pépite. Storybook facade The Creeping Fig on the facade (opposite) was planted by the former owner over 60 years ago. Originally built as a factory in 1888, the home was renovated in the mid 1980s. “She left us a beautiful binder of images about the house and donated the sale to charity,” Bree tells. A

BREE JOHNSON USED TO PASS this house every day when she worked in the neighbourhood. Charmed by its appearance and symmetrical facade covered in Ficus Pumila creeper, she says “it looked like it was from a fairy tale”. When it went up for sale in 2015, Bree and her husband Steve jumped at the chance to buy it, cracks and all. They asked Alex Lake from Therefore Studio to create a warm but minimalist urban oasis, a retreat from the bustling neighbourhood right on their doorstep. INDUSTRIAL WARMTH For the ceilings, Alex used off-form concrete with a textural application. Exposed brick down the side of the house, brass accents in the ensuite and a stainless steel kitchen benchtop add to the industrial look. The extensive use of American oak joinery and floorboards tempers the toughness of the steel and concrete to create the perfect balance. “It’s a beautiful and warm expression,” explains Bree. OUTDOOR OASIS The house originally had a pool and garden, but to increase the footprint, all green space was absorbed by a new addition that wraps around the old structure. Access to fresh air, natural sunlight and the outdoors was still crucial, so Alex designed courtyards that open to the natural surroundings. Bree and Steve now have a balcony on the first floor and three terraces below, including a 3 x 10 sqm courtyard on the ground floor that connects to the kitchen/ dining. There’s also a vegie patch on top of the garage, which can be accessed off the first floor terrace. “When we first moved in, it was just Steve and I. Now we have kids, these outdoor areas are really important,” says Bree. GREEN SCENE While they’re not ones for colour, the couple invited tonal green accents into the house as a link back to the extraordinary climber on the street facade. “We’re minimalists so we wanted to keep the palette fairly neutral, but the hints of green provide just the perfect amount of colour,” says Bree. “I mean, we’re still minimalists but maybe a little less so now that we have two kids under two!” Landscape architects Acre were enlisted to do the plantings, which are now taking off. Thanks to the apertures throughout the house, “there’s bits of green everywhere you look”, says Bree. R

Touch wood A concrete hearth with exposed storage creates a warm, cosy atmosphere even amid the industrial materials. The cast iron fireplace was purchased brand new, but the appeal was its traditional, aged-look detailing. It’s from the specialist company Cheminees Philippe and made in France. The artwork is by Seth Diego Birchall. A

Family time The kitchen cabinetry and flooring are both solid American oak in Rubio Monocoat Natural for a seamless look. The Stolab ‘Sture’ dining chairs and Henry Wilson ‘A-Joint’ table are made from the same timber. At night, the Archier pendant illuminates the island. Prep space From the kitchen, there’s a view to a light well (opposite), which overlooks the new addition. “It’s fantastic as it brings cool air in summer and light in winter," says Bree. “The deciduous Japanese pink cedar tree is perfect for the location.” The green ceramic vases are by Ella Waimarie Reweti. A

FROM LEFT On the up The steel staircase balustrade is painted Porter’s Paints ‘River Stone’. “This house can seem very industrial and cold on paper, but when it all comes together – especially with the timber flooring – it’s actually quite warm,” explains Bree. Bronze age The brass tapware by Astra Walker coordinates well with the custom-made brass towel rail by Jason Blake. The Agape ‘Ottocento’ bath with a rounded lip is a modern interpretation of a cast iron bathtub. The floor is tiled with Mutina ‘Mews’ in Fog and Lead and the vanity features a grey marble benchtop and splashback. Looking glass The master bedroom overlooks a light-filled terrace with Krause ‘Emperor’ bricks in Ghost. A simple Muuto ‘Tip’ table lamp in black sits on the bedside table. Gathered on the Blackbutt timber decking are a collection of lush plantings in pots from Anchor Ceramics. Warm welcome The muted cabinetry in the heritage entryway is painted Dulux ‘Lamb’s Ears’ and serves both as convenient storage and an opportunity to display decorative pieces, like these two vessels from Pépite. Perfect match Bree and Steve, pictured with baby Ned and Doug the Border Terrier, were living in an apartment before buying their house, and brought this A-Joint table by Henry Wilson with them. The counter stools are Mattiazzi ‘Zampa’ from District. Industrial accents creep through in the Muller van Severen ceiling lamps from Valerie Objects and the Oluce ‘Atollo’ lamp from Euroluce. A

3 ways to create an urban oasis

1

Select a concise palette of minimalist surfaces and materials with no excess adornment. The absence of clutter is conducive to a calming environment.

2

Think ahead when it comes to greenery. Creeping ivy, especially on terrace or courtyard walls, creates a sense of permanence and connection to nature.

3

Inject colour into the scheme, but do so with restraint. Bree and Steve chose muted green, which together with timber, creates a modern Australian look. real living

53

Raw beauty The red bricks of the original house were restored and Krause ‘Emperor’ bricks in a creamy tone were chosen to delineate the new structure. “Alex really stayed true to his design vision,” says Bree. “He gave us about 100 different bricks to look at, which we thought all looked the same, but Alex was insistent that they all looked so different!” Acre devised the landscape scheme, which includes three species of intertwining vines that over time will cover the wall. “It will soften the edges of the building and clone the elements of the facade,” explains Bree. The table and chairs are from Hay’s Palissade collection.

Neutral territory Homeowner Barbara Borghini says she loves all shades of “nude, beige, off-white, brown and ecru”, so it was only natural that she fell in love with this minimally designed home and its neutral scheme. Its ultra-modern design makes it quite unique in a city like Florence, which is known for its opulent architecture. A dining room with an Eero Saarinen ‘Tulip’ table leads to the living room with a custom sofa, vintage lamps, an Alfredo Rapetti artwork and Formica coffee table by architect Roberto Monsani, who designed this very home. A high rise Roberto forged his career in Florence designing residential buildings, and from the 1970s his work included international commercial spaces. His studio is still in the building where Barbara lives (opposite). A

BARBARA BORGHINI HAS DESIGNING SHOES DOWN TO AN ART, but it turns out her perfect fit isn’t a pair of heels – it was this home. Designed by the Italian architect Roberto Monsani, a prominent name in modern minimalism, the building’s clean lines and pared-back character make it a very rare find in an historic city like Florence. The founder of covetable footwear label Gia Borghini, Barbara has a strong aesthetic, and her statement handmade shoes are worn by a rolodex of fashionable tastemakers. And as for her interior style? “It is essential to have a space in white, it gives me serenity,” Barbara says. “I am obsessed with neutral colours.” CREAM OF THE CROP In tune with her own aesthetic, Barbara knows exactly what she likes, which made finding this property all the more special. “It was love at first sight, I knew straightaway that this was the house I was looking for,” Barbara says. “It was white, minimal, airy – the opposite of many residences, however charming, that you find here in the city, so I wanted it to become the home where I could raise my daughter Ginevra with my husband Pierluigi.” Iconic architect Roberto Monsani redesigned the building in his modern style with geometric lines and open-plan spaces. Barbara says she only made a few changes, such as the addition of a small bathroom and an opening in the living room’s custom bookcase to connect this space to Ginevra’s bedroom. The picturesque garden is also a new addition. “Erin Quiros, my friend and American interior decorator who has lived in Florence for years, was fundamental,” Barbara says of this project. “Her design was realised by my favourite flower shop in the city, Fiorile.” MADE IN ITALY Roberto’s legacy as a furniture designer also makes its mark in this home. Roberto created the large white sofa in the TV room, and according to Barbara, the table in the living room is made from original 1970s Formica laminate and bears the Monsani signature. “When I enter my house, I feel good. I take my shoes off – they’re mine! – and I throw myself on the sofa and I’m happy,” she reflects. “I loved this house because it already had the shades that I adore, all the colours of the earth and wood. This house has material elements, and I make heels out of briarwood, bamboo and cork. There’s a rare harmony.” R @reallivingmag

Gather round Barbara holds team lunches around her marble-topped Eero Saarinen ‘Tulip’ table for Knoll and she often invites friends over to “have aperitifs and watch films together”. The table and the Saarinen chairs are vintage. The rug is by Studio Maleki, the colourful artwork is by Renato Mambor and on the table is a black B&B Italia vase. A glass panel in the wall looks into the kitchen. Two tone The open-style kitchen (opposite, left) is an example of Roberto Monsani’s modern approach to interiors. The black and white striped marble floor, Formica surfaces and lighting that cuts through the ceiling creates a mirror-like effect. Garden suite Barbara’s bedroom (opposite, right) faces her lush outdoor area. Barbara says the custom bed has a headboard in Dedar fabric made by Bullo Interior, “a sought-after decor shop”. The linens are equally luxurious. “I have a passion for sheets and towels by Loretta Caponi – Florentine excellence in the art of embroidery,” Barbara tells. The bag is from a trip to Saint Tropez, and on the Studio Maleki carpet are a pair of Gia Borghini sandals. A

Elegant attitude Beautiful materials and pieces from different design periods are styled together in this living space. An antique wood and gold leaf mirror adds a fitting element of grandeur to the fireplace, which was handmade by an artisan in Florence using the scagliola technique. The trunk, when opened, is a bar cabinet, and was purchased on a trip to Harrods in London. All natural Plants soften the neutral palette in the TV room (opposite). “The large sofa, perfect with its pouf, is original from the 1970s and made by Monsani,” Barbara reveals. To further soften the minimal scheme, she has accessorised the sofa with Berber tapestry cushions. The table lamp is vintage.

3 ways to work with ultra-modern interiors

1

While the interior architecture of this home is very minimal, Barbara has given it warmth with woven fabrics and cushions, large rugs, furniture upholstered in boucle and tonal curtains.

2

Indoor greenery is essential! Leafy plants will help soften and disguise the angular features of modern interiors. Big ceramic pots will ground these natural elements and add visual texture.

3

Barbara’s style is modern and minimal, but she’s still included a few antique pieces in her home. In doing so, the interiors don’t feel one-note, and it achieves a naturally ‘curated’ look. A

AN OUTDATED HOME FROM THE ’80s has been reimagined into a luxurious coastal abode by developer Zerni Projects. Situated in Noosa’s Sunshine Beach and flanked by natural parklands, the five-bedroom, multi-level residence is a picturesque blend of contemporary urban architecture and laidback luxury. “I’d been looking for a project that I could put a coastal pavilion spin on, almost like a Scandinavan barn, and this property screamed that,” explains Zerni director Jayden Zernich, who had recently relocated from Victoria to Queensland with his family. This property would be the perfect tribute to his new neighbourhood. GO WITH THE FLOW Bringing a special mix of coastal charm and urban elegance to the Sunshine Coast, the home takes laidback living to the next level thanks to its free-flowing layout and seamless access to decks, pool and gardens outside. Large double-height voids and clerestory windows maximise the natural light and sense of spaciousness while providing a constant connection to the surrounding greenery, and outside, tallowwood cladding allows the dwelling to sit lightly within its street setting. Particularly well-suited to a family, there are ample spaces to be together or spread out, including a luxurious parents’ retreat. LUXURIOUS LAYERS For the interiors, Jayden called in local business CLO Studios to add a layer of softness to the modern suburban architecture. “Our aim was to pare it back and keep things light and coastal to complement the natural surroundings,” says Trudy Tozer, co-founder of CLO Studios. “We introduced a soft, dreamy colour palette with subtle pops of colour, along with accents of black and brass to balance the luxury of the home.” Natural timber furniture pieces, textural floor coverings and sheer linen curtains were all selected for their understated elegance; they enhance, but don’t detract from, the home’s natural beauty and relaxed luxury. “Softly furnished and naturally light, it’s a place of calming escape, embodying the ethos of its location, while weaving in contemporary conveniences with a welcome crispness,” Jayden concludes. 4 characteristics of a pavilion-style home

@reallivingmag

74

Pavilion-style living is designed around a consideration and enjoyment of the environment. Rural, coastal and suburban settings all lend themselves to this architectural style.

Open-plan, easy-flow living promotes the relaxed, informal lifestyle we all crave. A connection with the outdoors is also key. Think doors opening to decks, patios and balconies.

Windows or walls of glazing help maximise natural light and the overall feeling of spaciousness, while also capturing the beauty of the local surroundings and outdoor views.

Minimal decoration or adornment is needed in a pavilion home. Instead, the palette should be subtly neutral, with natural textures of timber and stone to reflect the landscape.

homes

Common denominator The same luxurious Hermes stone from the kitchen appears en masse in the bathrooms for a touch of decadence and drama. The top-mounted vanity and matte white tapware from ABI Interiors add a pop of freshness. Sit awhile In the media room (opposite, left), a fabric sofa from Space makes for a comfy work space. Havwood European oak floors throughout contribute to the home’s free-flowing nature. Relaxation chamber A Fienza freestanding stone-cast bath and Songo stool from Uniqwa Collections buy into Jayden’s laidback-luxe vision for the master ensuite (opposite, right). A

Good looking The pool area is a tranquil oasis from which the house can best be appreciated. The sparkling Tahitian-style, heated mineral pool features travertine tiles and is surrounded by tallowwood decking.

homes Dine a dozen Such a long dining room could have felt austere, but the cream-coloured Leda chairs by Miniform and curvy dining table that architect Fabio Fantolino designed for Thonet soften the space. The down lights, David Pompa pendant lamps and globe sconces by Claudia Melo for UTU allow for varying degrees of illumination. RAIN-SOAKED TURIN owes much of its charm to Alessandro Antonelli, the architect who designed significant religious buildings there in the mid-1800s. Antonelli created palazzos, too, some of which have since been subdivided. When present-day architect Fabio Fantolino walked through this garden apartment in one of Antonelli’s grand residences a few years ago, he knew immediately that he wanted to live here with his family. “There was an energy,” he says. But there was also a problem: the space had previously been used as an office. “The layout was a disaster, the spaces divided with plexiglass walls,” Fabio says. He quickly got to work. BACK TO BASICS Fabio removed all the non-structural walls and designed a new layout that positioned as many rooms as possible against the side of the building overlooking the garden. “It was my starting point,” he says. “I liked the idea that the garden was accessible from all rooms and could become the open-air extra room in summer.” He enlarged the garden-facing windows, taking advantage of the high ceilings, and laid a polished concrete floor to reflect the light. Interior archways nod to Antonelli’s religious heritage and enhance the sense of flow. TREE CHANGE With the garden on his mind, Fabio gravitated towards various shades of green. “It’s the best colour to make a connection between all the other colours, which gives you more freedom,” he says. Brown elements enter via the wood panelling and upholstered furniture. “Wood gives a space personality and elegance,” Fabio says. “And it connects you back to nature.” SOFT CENTRE Fabio knew the rooms with high-ceilings and concrete floors could create a cold feeling on rainy days, so he channelled a ’70s vibe throughout, typified by soft tones, velvety fabrics and plenty of lamps. In places, stained glass thickens the light. “Glass is a very technical and discreet material,” he says. “I wanted it in petrol blue and light smoky brown to make it the protagonist.” Although the glass tones are cool, the overall scheme feels balanced. Says Fabio: “It feels like a new beginning.” R

who lives here? Architect Fabio Fantolino, with his wife Laura and their two daughters Bianca and Letizia. @fabiofantolino

FROM FAR LEFT Corner office Fabio made use of a narrow section of wall in the living room by custom-designing a desk for it. The Diverge chair from Miniforms and Volta wall lamp by Nahtrang Design for Estiliuz are similarly compact. Book nook Fabio, his wife Laura and their two children are pictured on a low bench seat that Fabio designed. It’s one of many spots where the kids can curl up to read or do homework. On the shelf beside it is a sculpture vase by Nathalie Du Pasquier. In the foreground, a coffee table designed by Fabio sits atop a Sindar-KA rug by Tisca Italia. Sofa, so good Fabio and Laura wanted an oversized sofa that fit the room and harmonised with their art collection and personal aesthetic, so Fabio designed one for Nube Italia. The girls watch TV on the Geo poufs by Saba. On the far wall, a Paolo Assenza painting makes a statement. Living large Fabio added floor-to-ceiling mirrors to the narrow hallway that runs the length of the apartment, making it seem wider and brighter. A

Whole grain The long walnut panels in the home are works of art in themselves. Resting against the panelling is a minimalist Sergio Ragalzi painting. It sits on shelving designed by Fabio, beside an Eclipse pendant by Dechem. Shelf life The custom bookshelf (opposite) was designed to display mementos, not store books. Because regular access to the shelves wasn’t required, Fabio decided to push the Nube Italia sofa right back against it. A

how to accentuate high ceilings

1

Designing your home? Archways and curved doors and windows draw the eye upwards.

2

Use darker tones down low and light ones up high, as seen here in Fabio’s kitchen. Pride of place The kitchen has the highest ceiling in the apartment, making it an architect’s dream. Fabio custom-designed it entirely, using Calacatta marble for the worktops and Lins by Yonoh tiles from Harmony Inspire for the splashback. The tapware from Bellosta and Nemo wall lights fit in perfectly. Play time Bright red and light pink garden furniture by Paola Lenti establishes the mood in the garden (opposite), which was designed by landscape architect Cristiana Ruspa. Softly, softly The combination of green and grey creates a calm atmosphere in the main bedroom, which features a Fabio-designed bedhead, bedside table and console. A Buddy armchair by Pedrali and Flowerpot lamp by Verner Panton for &Tradition add a playful touch. Form-idable The artwork is by Paolo Grassino and the vases are from Bianchodichina (below, left). Self care Fabio designed the en suite vanity, adding slabs of Calacatta marble, Bellosta tapware and Fabbian wall lights (below, right). Girl zone Fabio and Laura have an en suite, so they decided to create a fun environment for Bianca and Letizia in the main bathroom (opposite). The pink tiles are from Ceramica Bardelli, the tapware is Bellosta and the linen towel is from Society Limonta.

Mediterranean flavour This cosy cabin by the sea has been designed and decorated in reference to its coastal surrounds. The white palette is bright and fresh, and brings to mind the nearby white cliffs, while brass accents and rattan elements scream of holidays on the water. Simple style The boat ornament (opposite) was found at an antiques store, while the white jug of blooms can move from room to room as the mood strikes. A real living

ORIGINALLY DILAPIDATED AND NEEDING A LARGE AMOUNT OF RENOVATION, [Monaco-based architecture firm] Humbert & Poyet’s La Mer Veille now feels light, spacious and breezy, despite being only 48 square metres. Rolling hills that form the bottom of the Maritime Alps plunge into the Ligurian Sea around the property, which sits between Bordighera and Sanremo. Being just 20 kilometres from France, a romantic combination of Italian and French influences is reflected in the furnishings. The main bedroom mirror and a small boat ornament in the second bedroom were sourced from antique stores in France, while in the kitchen, Italian Carrara marble counters are complemented by brass fixtures, light fittings and cutlery. The cabin’s panelling, which is made of reclaimed marine wood, is painted white to replicate many of the cabins that dot the Italian coastline. The white is prevalent throughout the house, and the windows swing open to allow a breezy atmosphere, both letting the dazzling blue of the Mediterranean to be the star of the show while also increasing the perceived space. Humbert & Poyet took inspiration from boat cabin design to maximise the space-saving techniques, including bespoke built-in storage under the bed and staircase. The charming holiday atmosphere continues onto the deck, where weathered floorboards have been painted white, a swinging chair beckons to have a book read in it, and uniquely, a piano sits next to the built-in cushioned bench seat overlooking the sea. Brass section A white teapot and matching cups sit in front of the kitchen’s shiny brass splashback, one of many brass inclusions that elevate the small but functional kitchen to a luxurious level. Wrap around Taking inspiration from boat cabin designs, architects Humbert & Poyer created a banquette-style eating area (opposite, above), with in-built storage underneath. A wood fireplace helps zone the area and warms the room in winter. Easy breezy Windows on both sides of the living space swing outwards to open, letting in the sea air and those incomparable ocean views (opposite, below). A real living

Sweet retreat “This is a ‘quiet’ room, everything here is deliberately low-slung, soft and relaxed,” says Georgina.

SANDY FEET AND WET TOWELS are not much of a bother to the owners of this holiday home on Victoria’s Surf Coast. “From the beginning they were adamant that nothing be too precious,” says Georgina Jeffries, the interior designer tasked with renovating the house for a Melbourne family of five. “They’re warm, lovely people who enjoy entertaining and who delight in having friends pile in to stay. One key request in their brief was ‘we want to squeeze in as many people as possible’.” So in March 2020 – just as Covid settled in for the long haul – Georgina started carrying out a mostly cosmetic update of what was at that point a tired home with an overgrown backyard. “The owners entrusted me completely,” says the Lorne-based designer, “which is quite lucky considering that Melbourne was about to spend much of the year locked down.” Materials took longer to make it to site, trades proved tricky to secure and the owners weren’t able to visit as work progressed – yet, despite this, Georgina was able to hand over keys to the completed four-bedroom house in December 2020. She and her team managed the project from start to finish: informing the style, finishes and spatial planning with a view to updating both the ground and first floor, creating a larger downstairs bathroom, and putting in a new fireplace upstairs. The end result is beachy and casual, with just the right amount of sophistication. That’s in large part thanks to the use of a beautifully neutral palette punctuated with pops of green and blue. “When you reference the colours outside the window it’s hard to grow wrong,” says Georgina. The living spaces are light and fitted out with low-slung furniture, the floors are a pale, beachy blonde and banks of elegant joinery provide plenty of storage. Guests are extremely well catered for, with inviting guest bedrooms, a bunk room and a bathroom that sports an expanded, open layout and playful touches. The end result is a holiday home that celebates the joy of gathering together by the beach. “There’s a friendliness to the house,” says Georgina. “It’s the kind of place where, from the moment you open the door, you know you’re welcome.” R @reallivingmag

CONTRARY TO POPULAR THINKING, concrete can be a warm, wonderful building material – especially when you’ve grown up with it. “The owner has fond memories of a childhood spent in a concrete house, so he was keen to use it to build a home for him, his wife and three young sons,” says architect Pete Kennon, who designed this rear extension to a Victorian-era house in Melbourne. The front two rooms were retained but the rest of the house was completely reworked to maximise space and allow for a strong connection to the garden. Every single slab of concrete (it forms the roof, ceiling and walls) was poured on site. “That meant we only had one chance to get it right,” says Pete. “There was a fair amount of holding our breath.” He needn’t have worried; the concreters who worked with builder Duobuilt did an outstanding job. Key to Pete’s design approach was emphasising volume. “A sense of airiness is vital to making sure the concrete, which is by its nature a heavy material, looks and feels light,” he says. Once it was set, the concrete was sealed and now requires no further maintenance. “It will patinate as time passes. I don’t see that as a problem though; it lends character.” The pool was resurfaced and landscape designer Jack Merlo was brought in to specify the backyard’s plants. Standing at the end of the garden, the house appears almost like a babushka doll, says Pete. “The architecture is replicated in different forms. There’s the concrete and timber pergola that echoes the roof of the ground floor, then the roof of the top floor. Same lines, same angles, but different depths.” R Going swimmingly “To accommodate the extension, we had to shorten the pool by 1.5 metres,” says Pete. “It was worth this small sacrifice to gain more living space.” The home’s upper level is finished with white zinc cladding. Landscape design by Jack Merlo. Key plants include ornamental grape, orange jessamine and dwarf sacred bamboo. Shape shifter Angular windows on the home’s upper level (opposite, left) break up the exterior’s hard lines. Fine form Off-form concrete (opposite, right) takes on the definition of the mould into which its poured, adding character.

design tip Balance is crucial when concrete is the primary material in a project. In order to not feel overly heavy, it needs to be countered by soft, warm colours and lots of greenery real living

SHRIMP IN CHILE WATER

STREET CORN SALAD

Serves 3 Prep time 10 mins, plus marinating time

Serves 6 Prep time 15 mins Cooking time 15 mins

In the indigenous version of aguachile, which translates as “chile water”, from Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico, sun-dried game meats were marinated in water with chiltepin, a small but pungent chilli that grows wild in the hills. However, in recent decades, aguachile, now found in nearly every seafood restaurant in Mexico, refers to the modern version below, which is usually made with shrimp.

Like ice cream, served in a cone or in a cup, Mexican street corn is served on the cob or in a cup (esquites). The name is derived from the Nahuatl word izquitl, which translates as “toasted corn”.

450g shrimp (prawns), peeled and deveined 9 limes, juiced 5 chiltepin* chillies 2 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp chopped coriander

1 small cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced ½ red onion, sliced 1 avocado, peeled and sliced Tostadas or saltine crackers, to serve

Cut the prawns lengthwise and place in a medium bowl. Add enough of the lime juice to cover, then place in the refrigerator. 2 Blend the remaining lime juice, chillies, oil and half the coriander on high speed until smooth, then season with salt and transfer to a bowl. 3 Add the shrimp to the blended mixture and stir gently. Check for seasoning and add some salt and ground pepper. Finish by adding the cucumber and onion slices and marinating for 15 minutes. Garnish the dish with the remaining coriander and sliced avocado. Serve cold with tostadas or saltine crackers. 1

2 tbsp butter ½ white onion, chopped 4 epazote leaves*, chopped 650g fresh corn kernels 75ml water Crushed chilli flakes, to taste

120g mayonnaise 1 lime, sliced, plus the juice of 2 limes 75g crumbled cotija cheese (or use grated parmesan)

Heat the butter in a pan over medium heat, add the onion and saute for 7 minutes, or until soft. Add the epazote and stir well. Add the corn kernels and water and cook until soft, no more than 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt. 2 Remove from heat, and stir in the chilli flakes and mayonnaise. Serve warm in cups, with a slice of lime and a splash of lime juice and the cheese sprinkled on top. 1

*TIP Fresh epazote leaves can be found seasonally at some specialty Mexican grocers, or try growing your own. Alternatively, dried epazote can be purchased from specialty spice retailers; use 1 tsp dried in place of 4 fresh leaves. A

*TIP Use serrano chillies if chiltepin peppers are difficult to find.

Fresh chilli peppers can add colour, fruit and floral notes and spice to a dish, however, when a pepper is dried, it opens up another world of complexity, a wider scope of rich flavours from smoky to sweet. Keep in mind that dried and ground chillies are best within a few months of being dried, and don’t last forever.

Afro-Antillean communities in Colón, Bocas del Toro Province and El Chorrillo neighbourhood in Panama City prepare fried red snapper with a touch of curry and aji chombo. Juice of 1 lime 1 snapper (pargo), about 1.4kg 1 red onion, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, minced

2 aji chombo chillies*, chopped 2 tbsp curry powder 115g (½ cup) plain flour Vegetable oil for frying

Squeeze lime juice over the fish and cut 4 or 5 slices into the flesh, about 2.5cm apart. Place in a bowl and add the onion, garlic, chillies and 1 tablespoon of the curry powder. Season with salt and pepper and leave the fish in the refrigerator for about 1 hour. 2 Mix the remaining curry powder and flour. Remove the fish from the bowl and roll in the seasoned flour. 3 Heat enough oil for shallow-frying in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the fish for 3 minutes each side, or until golden and crisp. Remove to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve with fried plantain or coconut rice. 1

BRAISED MEAT AND MELTED CHEESE TACOS Serves 6 Prep time 30 mins, plus resting time Cooking time 30 mins

A Mexico City taqueria favourite, the gringa is a perfect combination of braised meat and melted cheese. Urban legend says that an American girl asked for a white tortilla with melted cheese and the preparation caught. Some taqueros melt the cheese on the grill while they cook the meat, others make it more like a quesadilla.

7 small guajillo chillies*, seeded 1 white onion, quartered 2 garlic cloves, peeled 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp dried cumin 1 tbsp annatto paste* 1 clove 120ml unsweetened orange juice 75ml apple cider vinegar

450g beef or pork mince 2 tbsp butter or vegetable oil 8 tortillas 275g Oaxaca cheese*, grated TO SERVE ½ white onion, sliced 40g (1 cup) chopped coriander 150g (1 cup) chopped pineapple

Bring a small pan of water to the boil. Take off the heat, add the chillies and leave for 8 minutes, then drain, transfer to a bowl of ice water, drain and set aside. 2 Place the chillies, onion, garlic, oregano, cumin, annatto paste, clove, orange juice and vinegar in a food processor. Season with salt and pepper then blend until smooth. 3 Combine the meat and marinade in a large bowl. Cover and leave to rest for 8 hours or overnight, in the refrigerator. 4 Heat 1 tablespoon of the butter or oil in a large cast iron pan over high heat. Sear the meat with the marinade for 10 minutes, stirring, until evenly browned. 5 Spread 1 tablespoon of meat on a tortilla and sprinkle with cheese, then cover with another tortilla. Repeat with all the tortillas. Heat the remaining butter or oil in a large frying pan, then fry the gringas one at a time, for 3 minutes each side, or until browned and the cheese is melted and gooey. Cut each gringa in half and serve immediately with the sliced onion, coriander and pineapple. 1

PEACHES WITH WHEAT BERRIES Serves 6 Prep time 5 mins, plus overnight soaking and chilling time Cooking time 45 mins

For most Chileans, this cold snack made of mote (wheat berries) that are covered with huesillos (dried peaches) soaked in syrup is no doubt etched into your memory. There’s a saying that goes “mas chileno que el mote con hue sillos”, or “more Chilean than mote con hue sillos”. In the summertime, it’s sold by street vendors and food stalls, bottled and sold in markets, or mixed in home kitchens. 250g dried peaches 75g chancaca* Peel of 1 orange

1 cinnamon stick 130g white sugar 250g wheat berries*

Rinse the peaches under cold water and place in a bowl. Cover with water and leave to soak overnight. 2 Place peaches and their soaking water in a saucepan with the chancaca, orange peel and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil over medium heat and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the sugar and continue cooking, stirring constantly, for a further 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and remove the peaches, reserving the cooking syrup; set aside in the refrigerator. 3 Meanwhile, put the wheat berries in another saucepan, add water to cover, and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cover and cook for 30 minutes or until soft, then drain and leave to cool. Set aside in the refrigerator. 4 Add a generous tablespoon of wheat berries to 6 large glasses, divide the peaches between them and add some cooking syrup. Serve cold. 1

Coastal cocoon The Shore at Gerringong’s decor blends understated hues with Mediterranean influences. “We’ve used a lot of natural materials – linen, leather, timber and natural stone – to elevate the interiors to a more luxurious level, while maintaining a welcoming vibe,” says owner Aimee McKechnie. Where possible, Aimee included the works of local artisans and small businesses and indulged her passion for Australian art. The artwork in this living room is by Georgie Wilson. HOLIDAYING WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY has taken on new meaning this year, with so many of us separated from loved ones due to lockdowns and border closures. Accommodation choice matters more than ever, as we search for a relaxing base where soon, so soon, we’ll be able to bask in each other’s company and make up for lost time. Enter The Shore at Gerringong, a stylishly renovated five-bedroom home overlooking Werri Beach on the NSW South Coast. Spread across two levels, it has five bedrooms, each with their own ensuite, a well-equipped kitchen, open-plan living and dining and a downstairs games room/kids retreat. Outside spaces include a large balcony, undercover deck, saltwater pool and lawn area, all conducive to soaking up the ocean views, sea breezes and, frankly, the simple freedoms we’ve so long missed. Aimee McKechnie purchased the property in 2019 with the dream of creating a different style of holiday, where the emphasis was on the house more so than the actual destination. “With its multiple living and outdoor spaces, The Shore appeals to so many different types of guests,” says Aimee, who suggests pre-ordering groceries to give yourself more time to relax and make full use of the property. The interiors have been designed with comfort in mind, from the beds with cushioned mattress toppers and cotton sheets, to the linen couches draped with cosy woollen blankets and the soft oak floors and heated travertine bathroom tiles. “Many of the furniture items are custom made to enhance the feeling that this is a unique property, and the artworks are almost all originals, with a focus on Australian talent,” Aimee adds. It all contributes to the sense of instant calm and relaxation as soon as you set foot in the front door. “We want our guests to feel comfortable enough to kick off their shoes and flop on the sofa – the ultimate barefoot luxury,” Aimee explains. Of course, if you’d like to venture beyond this piece of paradise, you don’t need to go far. Gerringong is home to a thriving community of eateries, artisans, galleries and boutiques, and is within close proximity to well-known destinations such as Berry, Kiama and Shoalhaven. Kids will love the neighbouring reserve and parkland with its basketball courts, skate park and playground. “The adults can watch the kids from the balcony with a glass of wine in hand,” Aimee shares.

Saltwater therapy We challenge you to tear yourself away from the property’s enclosed pool area. “We’ve been busy during this recent lockdown installing pool heating, which I know guests are going to love,” Aimee says. A quiet place Sitting with a good book and a hot beverage is just one of myriad ways to fill an afternoon. Flame of mind In winter, the gas fireplace (opposite) keeps guests toasty, while Sonos speakers upstairs and downstairs provide the ultimate background soundtrack. A

All awash Providing each bedroom with its own ensuite was a genius move on Aimee’s part. “Despite sharing the house with 10 other people, guests often tell us that they felt like they still had their own space,” she tells. Wise choice Bedside stools by Melbourne-based furniture maker Heimur are just one example of the considered furniture selections. Crowd pleaser The spacious, well-equipped kitchen was designed with family mealtimes in mind. Dinner service Continuing the flexible-living theme, meals can be enjoyed inside or out. Emily Persson painted the artwork above the banquette (opposite).
