I do love a weekend project and have a rolling list of ideas in a special notebook I’ve had for years, ever since transitioning from the ‘barsand-misbehaviour’ stage of life to the ‘joys of home’ one. The list ranges from the easy, ‘pottering’ level to the more ambitious type that’s going to involve tools and a bit of skill. There is literally no end to the ways you can improve your home, whether you rent or own, and the way it enriches your life is immeasurable. For example, take a look at what Ellie achieved by painting her kitchen units on p82. The simple pallet planter on p109 is going in my notebook – vertical planting’s the answer for my patio – and, while I’m at it, Gina’s bathroom on p88 has inspired me to fill mine with plants! That’ll keep me busy…

Then there are the cool curves and nostalgic design of the glass Tallbyn lights, which will bring classic elegance to any space.

CAFFEINE CANTEEN

The statement sideboard is having a moment. Proving that storage need not be boring, this modern Deco beauty will bring a bit of glam to a room, with brass detailing that sits perfectly against dark-painted interiors. COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Lisa Watts, 47, an interior designer, I live here with my husband Martin, 54, a builder and our dog, Meg. Our children are Jordan, 26 and Freya, 24. MY PROPERTY A four-bedroom house in Aberdeenshire, which we bought in 2007. It was built in 1996. WHEN I MOVED IN Each room was painted every colour of the rainbow – it looked garish and none of the spaces flowed together. AND NOW We tackled each room, one by one, and have created a calm, minimal interior, where I can indulge my love of old and new. STYLE TIP Think carefully about the layout of your home – make sure you have open, sociable spaces and cosy, private corners.

are HERE TO STAY’ MONO MAGIC.

‘We chose a dark grey textural wallpaper by Casamance for the alcoves, and balanced out the darkness by painting the walls in a soft, chalky off-white’

Lisa and Martin bought a spacious new-build because of a nearby school, only meaning to live there temporarily. Years later, they are still enjoying their minimal mono home

W

hen we first moved into this house, the first task on our list was to tone down the decor,’ says Lisa. ‘The rooms were all painted in various shades of the rainbow, and although it was certainly a vibrant interior, none of the room schemes flowed from one to the other, and the overall effect was busy and garish. We set about decorating, but at the time, we thought we would only live here for a couple of years. The area was new to us, and we had only moved here as it was close to a great school for our two children, Jordan and Freya. In the meantime, my husband Martin wanted to focus on setting up his joinery business, plus we wanted to spend our time getting to know people, and the local area, rather than tackling a renovation. A new-build house that only needed a quick lick of paint was the ideal level of difficulty for us at the time. Working room by room, we calmed down the decor, and created a neutral scheme we could live with until we moved house.

Long-term thinking

However, a few years down the line, we realised how happy and settled we were here, so we decided to make the house our own and extend it to suit us better. We chose to add a full-width extension at the back, so the old dining room has become a cosy snug, and the kitchen is now super spacious and opens onto a new dining area overlooking the garden. The extension has three large Velux rooflights, so sunlight floods in now,

‘HAVE AN OPEN MIND WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING AROUND TK MAXX – IT CAN BE A TREASURE TROVE!’

DRIFTWOOD HEART

Take a large piece of foam board. Draw on a large heart outline and cut the shape out with a craft knife. Collect driftwood (or find a selection from £8 on Etsy if you’re nowhere near the sea). Make sure it’s thoroughly dry, and glue down in layers on the foam heart shape, using a hot-glue gun. Build up until you have covered the foam board completely with wood, and created a 3D effect. Hang with strong picture wire.

and the space is really open and sociable. French doors connect the house to the garden and add an indoor/outdoor sense of space all year round. The front room previously had an archway leading into the old dining room, so we blocked that up in order to turn it back into a separate, self-contained space. It was a simple change, but it’s made the room feel so much more complete. We built out a chimney breast to add architectural interest, and installed a living flame gas fire. There are useful alcoves either side of the fireplace and space for two large sofas. Before we blocked the archway, the room felt like a featureless corridor, but now it’s a luxurious and tranquil space.

‘Collections of wicker baskets are so useful for storage’

Texture over colour

Once the rear extension was complete, I turned my attention to the decor. I have worked hard to create a soothing, cohesive theme, using a subtle, mainly monochrome colour palette, mixed with slightly rustic materials. I am a minimalist at heart, and I love interesting textures. There are some edgy, slightly industrial accents as well, to add character – just because this is a new-build, there’s no reason it has to lack individuality or

interest. I see a new-build home as a blank canvas, offering a great opportunity to experiment and try things out.

Handmade home

Mixing old and new is really satisfying to me, and I enjoy salvaging and upcycling. But rather than going for a cluttered or eclectic look, I’m actually very selective about what I buy and bring in to the house. Renovating our home on a limited budget meant tackling lots of tasks ourselves – which I loved, as I’m in my element when I have a paintbrush in my hand and an upcycling project on the go! I do a lot myself, but I know I’m lucky, because Martin is a joiner, and he has made some of our beautiful furniture. In fact, he makes a new piece every year for our wedding anniversary. We have quite a collection now, after almost 30 years!

Making a statement

For each room, I like to take a hero piece as a starting point – it might be a light fitting, a piece of furniture or a piece of art. I then build the room up in layers around that. Having that strong starting point helps me plan the rest of the room. I give lighting a lot of consideration, too. I prefer soft light levels, so we

BOX SHELVES

1

Repurpose small crates or wine boxes to create floating shelves – the smaller sizes won’t need as much support. Ensure the pieces are sturdy and either use strong wood glue or small tacks to secure any loose joins. If you’re planning to refinish the wood on the crate, lightly sand all of the surfaces to remove any splinters. Brush away dust. To paint the back of the crate, tape off the sides, apply a wood primer then, once dry, apply two coats of your chosen paint (it’s a great way to use up tester pots or leftover paint). Apply a varnish or a stain to the wood surfaces, depending on the finish you’d like. Secure to the wall using heavyduty saw tooth picture hangers.

My aim is to create a soothing and comfortable environment, which I’ve achieved with a calm, neutral palette and a selection of textural pieces in natural knits, linens and velvets. I love The White Company’s style and look to its range of subtle colours and soft, quality fabrics for inspiration all the time. ABOUT ME I’m Hannah Otto, 29, a blogger (@theottohouse). I live here with my husband Matt, 33, an air traffic controller, and daughters Darcey, five, and Betty, three. OUR HOME A three-bedroom 1930s semi in a village on the outskirts of Winchester, Hampshire. WHEN WE BOUGHT IT The house had been lived in by an elderly couple, who obviously loved it but hadn’t made any changes for years. AND NOW We’ve sanded every single floor, repainted every single room, bought some investment pieces and improved the things we can’t afford to change just yet. STYLE TIP Create a palette of colours that you want to use throughout the house and stick to it. For me it was pink, yellow, rust and blue.

AN ENTIRE YEAR!’ SOFA STATEMENT

‘We treated ourselves to this lovely yellow sofa from Swoon, which tied in with the neutral one we already had from Made’

By filling weekends and evenings with DIY, Hannah and Matt have been able to do the brunt of the renovation work themselves

A

fter completely refurbishing our two-bedroom Victorian cottage a few miles away, we realised we needed more space and a bigger garden,’ says Hannah. ‘We wanted to stay local, so we started looking around, but soon realised that we were going to have to go for a doer-upper if we wanted to stay within our budget. We had a couple of disappointments where the chain fell through at the last minute, which was frustrating, but then we found this house. We knew we could do something with it. It had the space and capacity to extend it in years to come – a big bonus – and the garden was huge. Plus, we could change the garden at the front to provide off-street parking. The interior was dated and in need of work, but we could see past that. Luckily, our offer was accepted and went through.

Making plans Any furniture that was worth salvaging from our old house, we brought with us, as I’m big on upcycling and having a mix of old and new. Then we set aside part of the budget to invest in a few new items, such as beds and a sofa. When we looked under the carpets we were happy to find the floorboards in pretty good condition, so we set to work sanding them. We did this ourselves where possible, then sealed them with Loba oil, which is a solvent-free product made from natural materials, with no smell. The floors that weren’t wood – the lino in the bathroom and the cork in the kitchen – we painted to ensure they were fresh and clean.

Sorting the kitchen With all the floors done, it was time to tackle the kitchen and utility area. This

is one of the spaces we are hoping to extend in the future, so for now it was just a case of painting the units and refreshing the tiles. The kitchen was lime green, which was a bit in-your-face and not a colour I’d have ever chosen. Instead, we went for a deep, rich blue, that covered the very vivid green underneath. I came up with a canny trick for the tiles, placing stickers over the existing white tiles to give the impression of new ones. I colour-matched the stickers to the units, but went for a pattern rather than a block colour to add interest.

‘Rather than coloured walls and a white ceiling, I’ve gone for Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground above the picture rail’

Choosing a palette I was confident about the blue in the kitchen, as it’s one of my key colours, and for the rest of the house I wanted a mix of yellow, pink and rust. To be sure the colours all worked together, I bought a load of testers and then used four or five for each room, putting them all on the wall next to each other to make sure they didn’t clash. I also tried to change things up a bit by using two colours of paint in one area, such as on

Vacuum and check if any boards need replacing. Ensure all nails are hammered to below the surface of the boards. Fill any gaps. Using a professional drum belt sander and following safety instructions, start with medium or coarse sandpaper. Go slowly and never let the drum rest on the floor. Start by sanding diagonally across the floor. Then sand from top to bottom, going with the grain. Use an edging and/or corner sander for hard to reach areas. Vacuum, then sand another two or three times, using a finer grit sandpaper each time. Manually smooth out any rough spots. Apply varnish or oil as per instructions. Once dry, sand any drips.

MULTI-USE SPACE

‘This utility area doubles as our breakfast station’

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Fix a row of hooks under a shelf to display pretty mugs’

Do it! Stretch a small space Go high with storage – use the tops of cabinets to display jars, baskets or boxes for a tidy finish. Fit high-level shelving on walls where there aren’t cabinets, including above the door. Use hooks or kitchen storage accessories under cabinets and shelving to hang mugs and utensils. Go for wall cabinets on the floor as they’re slimmer than standard kitchen floor units. Avoid dark colours for the floor and ceiling, instead stick to white or pale neutrals. Invest in good lighting – a brighter room will automatically feel larger. If you’re lacking natural light, add ceiling spotlights, plugin wall lights or battery lights that can be fitted under cabinets. Maximise storage space inside your cabinets – spice jar racks that fit to the inside of cupboard doors, pan lid holders and tiered cupboard organisers will keep busy cupboards under control.

36 | MAY 2020

‘RATHER THAN RETILING, SAVE MONEY BY USING STICKERS TO JAZZ UP EXISTING WHITE TILES’ the stairs, and I went for a darker shade above the picture rail rather than below, for a unique look.

Room for everyone It made sense for the girls to have the largest bedroom as they like sharing, and there’s space in there for them to play as well. After a bit of a debate about colours (as one wanted pink and the other purple) we compromised on pink walls and a purple painted wardrobe. We chose the bedroom at the back of the

house for us. It’s still a nice size and we solved the problem of fitting in wardrobes by having them built by a local carpenter. We use the third bedroom as a study. We have a downstairs loo – a huge benefit with young children – and we’d like to replace the main bathroom eventually, but we need to save up before we can afford to do it. It was all white and boring when we moved in, so I revamped the lino by painting it a lovely dark green and have brought in more colour with accessories and a patterned shower curtain.

BLUE HIGHLIGHTS

‘While we save for a full kitchen extension, we modernised the space with deep blue accents’

Living space The large living room had plenty of space for a dining table, which we brought with us from the previous house, and it made sense to have the dining zone overlooking the garden with some storage along one wall. That left us plenty of room for a large living area, and we treated ourselves to a gorgeous new yellow sofa.

NEW OUTLOOK

‘The cottage is set on a cliff overlooking the harbour and has amazing views of the sea’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Stacey Sibley, creative director at Alexander James Interiors, and I live with my husband Guy, operations director at the same company. MY PROPERTY A two-bedroom former coastguard’s cottage in Port Isaac, Cornwall, built in the 1850s. We bought it in December 2016. WHEN I MOVED IN The interior was dark and drab, the bedrooms and bathroom were cramped and the kitchen needed a revamp. AND NOW We ripped out the carpets and refurbished the floors, fitted a new kitchen, reworked the bathroom and bedrooms and redecorated throughout. STYLE TIP The rooms are small, so I’ve gone for soft, muted colours, to create a calm, relaxed feel.

COASTAL CHARM’ CHARACTER AND TEXTURE

‘The exposed stone wall in the living room was already here – it makes a lovely feature’

Idyllic seaside summer holidays inspired Stacey and Guy to buy a pretty Cornish cottage and give it a fresh and timeless seasidethemed look

I

hadn’t been back to Cornwall since I spent happy holidays there as a child,’ says Stacey. ‘But when we bought our two West Highland terriers, Piglet and Alfie, we wanted to go on holiday with them, but found we couldn’t easily take them abroad with us. My husband Guy had never been to Cornwall before, so one year we decided to rent a cottage in Port Isaac. We fell in love with the village and ended up going back there two or three times a year for the next decade. We began to dream of buying a cottage in the village and, one day, I decided we should take the plunge!

I spotted a cottage online, and Guy and I drove down for the day to view it. We thought we’d be able to look around the house and then go on the beach and enjoy a nice lunch in the sunshine – but in the end, even though it was August, it poured down with rain! Despite the awful weather, the day wasn’t wasted, as the cottage turned out to tick all our boxes. It had been a holiday home and, although it was old, it had been well maintained, so we knew we wouldn’t have to do any structural work. Another big draw was that it had both a garden and parking – having stayed in Port Isaac for so many years, we knew that many of the old fisherman’s cottages didn’t have either. This house was a real gem, and we were lucky to find it. We loved the location on top of the cliffs – it was wonderful to look out and see the views. The cottage wasn’t very big, but we didn’t need a large place and it had bags of character. Other people had

‘INVEST IN A TRADITIONAL WOODBURNER FOR A WARM AND COSY FEEL, WHATEVER THE SEASON’ already viewed the house before us, so having walked around it and realised we liked it, we put in an offer there and then – and the house was ours.

Little tweaks

We knew that we’d have to make some cosmetic changes to the cottage, but nothing too major. The walls were painted a deep taupe grey, which made it feel very dark, and we also wanted to change the look of the kitchen. Another issue was that because the main bathroom was so small, all the bedrooms had basins in them, which took up quite a bit of space. To solve this, we installed a space-saving toilet with a basin on top in the bathroom. We then removed the one in the guest bedroom altogether and replaced the basin in the main bedroom with a more attractive version and wooden washstand. It looks so much nicer now.

Feature floors

With two dogs and lots of beaches nearby, practical flooring was a necessity. There was already a slate floor in the kitchen, which was a real bonus, but

EXPOSED STONE WALL

1

Having first confirmed your wall is stone, use a masonry hammer and chisel to gently chop away at the plaster until you can see the stone underneath. If the stone looks in good condition, then continue to expose it in that area. Using a wire brush, scrape away loose plaster and clean residue. Some areas may need to be re-pointed. You may want to apply specialist masonry acid to brighten the colour. Finish with a sealant to eliminate draughts. If your home doesn’t have stone or brick walls, consider stone cladding or facing slips. These can be lighter-weight panels clad with real stone slices, ready to be pointed. A budget friendly version is cast stone slips, which replicate the colours and textures of traditional stone.

‘TRY PAINTING YOUR UNIT DOORS TWO DIFFERENT SHADES – DARKER LOWER DOORS WILL GROUND THE LOOK’ we also decided to rip out the old carpets and replace them with laminate flooring in some rooms and repainted the old wooden floorboards in others. This was especially important in the master bedroom – because the house is located on a cliff, this leads straight onto the raised garden, and we didn’t want dirty footprints.

BEACH BLOOMS

‘These casual bouquets are from Wadebridge Flowers, which sells local wildflowers’

As creative director of Alexander James Interiors, I knew exactly how I wanted the interior of the cottage to look and, as soon as our offer was accepted, I made moodboards for all the rooms. We wanted it to feel light and bright, with a seaside-y, relaxed cottage feel. Bedrooms aside, we didn’t intend to be too precious about the interior – it doesn’t matter if sand gets trodden in from walks on the beach. We did all the work ourselves. It took up various holidays and free weekends, including Christmas and Easter, but we

Start with three identical maps – try high-quality printouts, colour photocopies of an original map or map-printed giftwrap. Create two heart templates in card, one about 5cm smaller in diameter than the larger (this can be customised, depending on your frame and map size). Place the largest heart template card on the map, draw around it and cut the heart out using a craft blade. Align the second map perfectly with the first map. Using the smaller template, cut out the heart. Realign the map, with the smaller heart cut-out at the bottom and the larger on top, and use foam adhesive pads to create a gap between the layers. Finally, place the third map at the bottom and repeat this step to stick the maps with the heart cut-outs on top. Place in a frame and hang.

wanted to have it all done for the summer, so we could really enjoy the place. All the walls needed painting, and because they had been painted with vinyl silk, it took us four coats. I’ve also learned how to do tiling and grouting. We wanted to get the scale of the furniture right, as the rooms are quite small. I wanted to bring a vintage retro feel to the place, so how I accessorised it was very important to me. I collected pieces from vintage and antiques shops that brought back childhood memories of Cornish holiday cottages.

Take inspiration from outside with lush shades, organic finds and botanical prints

Pull out and keep!

This scheme creates impact by blending colours and motifs found in nature with man-made shapes

the STYLE RULES GO BOLD ON WALLS Be brave and paint the walls a deep green. Try breaking up the colour by painting either the top or bottom half of the walls black – this is an especially great way to zone a workspace as it creates a visual border. LAYER COLOUR AND PATTERN Keep large pieces of furniture classic, such as a neutral sofa, then pile high with statement cushions

featuring botanical prints and popping pink and teal velvets. Pick printed curtains for added drama. CREATE CONTRAST Juxtapose prints of tropical leaves with industrial-style pieces, including angular black metal and reclaimed wood tables. ADD DEPTH TO FLOORS Go for light wood parquet format laminate or vinyl flooring and an oversized rug to zone an area.

Why it works

Mix and match a few shades from the same palette to create a more cohesive scheme

the STYLE RULES DESIGN AN UPLIFTING SCHEME Combine soft petal pink, leaf green and duck egg blue with neutral tones to replicate the ambience of a sunny spring day. Natural wood prevents the look from becoming too twee. LAYER UP FABRICS Mix and match dainty florals with simple ticking stripes, then add an extra dimension with woven or knitted throws.

PRETTIFY YOUR WALLS Stick to small-scale floral wallpaper in delicate shades. A pared-back damask design is a classic choice. Team with duck egg blue shutters to further the country feel. GO FOR A SHABBY-CHIC VIBE Source distressed furnishings, upcycled chairs and galvanised metal bucket planters for an unpolished finish.

STYLE AT HOME SAYSÉ ‘The natural textures, like coir and rattan, give this pretty colour combo a boho edge with a modern twist’ features editor

Holly Walsh

Slubby linen textiles, tactile wool throws and woven rattan baskets bring texture to this tonal scheme

the STYLE RULES KEEP IT SOPHISTICATED Adopt a neutral colour palette of soft greens and greys combined with warm cream and white highlights. For a laid-back country cabin feel, pick cream or light wood-panel effect wallpaper. Team with a pale green carpet to make the look fresh and inviting. PICK TIMELESS PIECES Go for simple oak furniture and a classic painted Shaker-style

dresser. Refresh a tired sofa with removable covers – try mixing it up with a different fabric on the armchair, such as a check design in a coordinated colour. TAKE INSPO FROM THE GARDEN Complement a rural setting with cushions and artwork featuring woodland ferns and wild flowers. Fill vases and planters with seasonal bulbs and flowers picked from the garden.

Why it works the STYLE RULES MAKE A SAGE CHOICE Take on a pared-back colour palette of contrasting black and white with dark sage and light grey. Try installing a picture shelf across one wall and paint the lower half green and the upper section brilliant white. EMBRACE SCANDI STYLE Pick a sleek oak dining table and grey upholstered chairs with tapered legs as a smart place for

the family to eat together. Or, in the bedroom, dress a curvy upholstered bed with a bold leaf-print duvet set contrasted with dark sheets. ACCESSORISE WITH GREENERY Display a variety of plants, from succulents to eucalyptus stems, in different shaped vases. LOOK DOWN FOR DETAIL Add interest with wood flooring in a prominent natural grain.

Why it works the STYLE RULES CREATE A CABIN FEEL Whether it’s a room in your home or a precious covered nook of the garden, give it a light and airy summerhouse vibe with rustic wood-panel wallpaper. MIX AND MATCH FLORALS Celebrate the beauty of an English garden with blowsy floral prints in uplifting shades of yellow, pink and purple. Hang voile curtains that allow light to shine through.

BE THRIFTY Give new purpose to pre-loved furniture through upcycling. Spray paint old school chairs for a splash of bright colour or give a desk a shabby chic makeover to create an informal workspace. PROTECT FLOORS If you’re going to be in and out of the garden, lay an indoor/ outdoor rug on the floor as they’re hard-wearing and easy to clean.

Add drama with angular furniture

the STYLE RULES BRING BALANCE A backdrop of neutral wallpaper featuring a natural grain texture adds interest to walls and prevents the monochromatic palette from appearing too stark. Contrast with black laminate or vinyl flooring. EMBRACE SYMMETRY A classic white sofa with tall ladder shelving either side creates pleasing symmetry, while large botanical prints in dark frames

produce a central focal point. Team with modern angular tables and a curved floor lamp. CREATE A COHESIVE LOOK Upholster an armchair in an illustrative leaf print on a white background and use the same fabric for coordinating cushions. SOFTEN WITH GREEN ACCENTS Stick to a monochrome palette with plenty of lush green accessories, plants and foliage.

Style a soothing beach-style retreat at home using tranquil shades and waterthemed prints

Why it works the STYLE RULES THINK COASTAL COLOURS Be inspired by the British shoreline by using a palette of sandy neutrals and ocean blues. Cool greys also work as a neutral. HAVE FUN WITH PRINTS Source fabrics featuring wading birds, fish, seaweed and coral, but stick to similar tones for a cohesive look. Simple stripes and watery patterns also give a room a beachy feel.

WHITEWASH WALLS White or cream tongue-andgroove wood panelling gives a quaint beach hut feel. Try creating the look with wallpaper and run a picture shelf near the top. KEEP IT RELAXED Pick furniture and accessories with natural wood finishes reminiscent of driftwood. Dress rooms simply for a laid-back holiday vibe – think classic china and recycled glass.

‘The lovely big ceramic sink and the tap are both Victorian in style, to tie in with the age of the house’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Ellie O’Mahoney, 39, a magazine journalist, and I live with my husband Mark Evans, 41, a graphic designer, and our children Elliott, five, and Molly, two, in a four-bedroom Victorian terrace in southeast London, which we moved into in June 2017. THE CHALLENGE Creating a vibrant space with an industrial feel, on a budget and without replacing the existing cabinets. MY WISHLIST The room needed a new, long-lasting worktop, a much bigger sink, metallic touches and a large injection of colour and character – especially on the units.

Ellie and Mark made some savvy design decisions to create a fresh, new kitchen with a modern industrial vibe, on a tight budget

M

y husband Mark and I had been living with our son, Elliott, in a 1930s terraced house in Brockley,’ says Ellie. ‘But, with our second child on the way, we knew we needed more space. We found this house, which had an extra bedroom. It needed plenty of TLC, but that didn’t put us off, as we’d renovated our previous property. We had planned to carry out a large extension of this kitchen, but we just couldn’t afford it, so we sat down and thought about what changes we could make on a budget. Luckily, Mark is very handy and can tackle almost anything, so that helped us make up our minds.

First moves

DARK AND DRAMATIC

‘Painting the units dark grey and teaming them with brass knobs has worked out even better than I hoped’

The decision to paint the units was easy, but it was a bit of an experiment. We did it over a weekend, and didn’t expect it to look like anything other than a DIY job. In fact, it made such a difference, and the space immediately felt so modern, clean and fresh, that it inspired us to carry on. We changed the old small wooden knobs for brass ones, fitted cup handles on the drawers, and painted the walls off-white to avoid them looking too stark. We made a mistake by trying to replace the existing worktop with a marble-effect one. It was cheap at £200, but looked it, and it totally detracted from the success of the units. We ended up returning it and taking some more time to research our options before finally investing in a high-quality one at six times the price! The extra cost was worth it and it makes the rest of the kitchen feel as if it hasn’t been done on such a small budget. We also took the opportunity to put in a white double Belfast sink and

MAKE IT YOURSELF

‘Mark made the spice rack himself and painted it white so it blends into the wall’

Make it!

SPICE RACK

1

Plan what you want to store on the rack, then measure and cut a piece of lightweight hardboard backing, sanding any rough edges. Use the backing hardboard piece to measure four pieces for the outer frame. Cut them to size and use a strong wood glue to secure to the back of the frame. Once dry, you can add small tacks in each corner through the frame to secure, if required. Create your horizontal shelves, using your spice jars as a guide for the height. Cut and glue the shelves into place, using tacks through the side for further hold. Add some shelf dividers if desired, gluing in place. To paint, sand the surfaces, clean and apply a coat of wood primer. Sand lightly again before applying eggshell, vinyl or gloss.

a period-style tap. We wanted industrial-look shelves with large metal brackets, and we found the hardware quickly online. Mark and his dad spotted some old scaffolding planks in a skip around the corner and dragged them home. Mark then cleaned, sanded and varnished them. They look great, and are really useful for crockery, vases and decorative items. He also made the spice rack himself out of some spare wood.

Design details

We didn’t need a new table or chairs, so it was just a case of distressing the existing table and bench – also made by Mark – to make them fit better with our industrial theme. We disliked the bland pendant light that was already there, so we chose smaller metal and glass lights to hang over the table, a cage light on the wall, and recessed spotlights in the kitchen. Once the lighting was sorted, we set about creating more storage in the dining area, to stop stuff piling up on the table. There was empty space above the fridge freezer, which Mark filled with a few shelves. They’ve freed up space in the kitchen units and on the worktop, too. We had a sort out of our kitchen equipment, only keeping the things we genuinely use, and we’ve also tried to keep our new worktop clear as much as possible. We’re so thrilled with the kitchen now – we love cooking in it, and getting up early to make breakfast with the kids.’

WINDOW BLINDS

Ellie’s choice:

WINDOW BLINDS

Loving the fresh look of Ellie’s blind? Here’s how to dress your windows to impress… install the blind outside the recess though, see below. Roller blinds are easy to cut to size at home. Ditto for Venetians. The benefit of made-tomeasure is you’ll get a much wider choice of fabrics and trimmings.

What are the main types?

How do I measure for new blinds?

Rollers are usually the least expensive and, because they roll tight to the top of the window, afford the best views outside. Romans offer a more upmarket look as you see more of the fabric even when fully open, while Venetian blinds are affordable and can easily be wiped clean. The slats are twisted via a cord to adjust the light levels and privacy.

Blind stockists provide detailed measuring instructions – many have online tools that guide you through the measuring process as you order. Decide whether you want the blind to fit inside or outside the window recess. Inside requires a more precise fit but can look neater. To get a good inside fit, measure the window in three places, for both width and drop, and use the smallest measurements. Look out for window handles, too. They can get in the way of a blind operating properly inside the recess.

‘It’s a tropical

URBAN OASIS’ Resorting to drastic measures, Gina borrowed bedroom space to double the size of her bathroom, creating a longed-for retreat her whole family could enjoy

H

aving lived in this house for a year, I couldn’t stand the cramped bathroom a minute longer,’ says Gina. ‘It was so tiny, and I didn’t know how to improve the space. After getting a builder to come over, I was given some interesting options. The first was to keep the space as it was, and simply revamp it with a new suite. The second was to knock down a wall and take two metres off the adjacent bedroom to create a much bigger space in here. I was happy to make that sacrifice, because the bedroom would still be quite large. As my children, Maisie, Florence and Albert, were getting older, they needed a larger bathroom, so it was a priority for all of us.

The builder explained that, by moving the wall, the bathroom could double in size, allowing enough space for a walk-in shower. He also suggested adding another window to let in more light. We decided to position the bath at one end, and use the other end for the shower. With the plan in place, I was excited to get going with the project. I couldn’t wait to have a family-sized bathroom with a walk-in shower as well as a bath – a statement tub was at the top of my list, as I was keen to create a focal point in the room. I started looking for a freestanding bath and decided against a traditional roll-top in favour of a more modern shape. The rest of the house is decorated in an industrial style, and I wanted to add some of those elements, too, so the rooms would all flow together. I love dark colours but, for here, I went for a much lighter, more natural palette. The builder suggested some handmade taps, using some leftover copper pipes and stopcocks. A large, wall-hung

ABOUT ME I’m Gina Webb, 50, a data analyst. I live with my three children, Maisie, 20, Florence, 18, and Albert, 17, in a four-bedroom terraced house in east London. We moved here about two years ago. THE CHALLENGE Once we’d improved the kitchen, the next job on the list was to enlarge and modernise the bathroom. With three growing teenagers, its original tiny size wasn’t fit for purpose. It was extremely dated, with old, grubby flooring and it hadn’t been decorated in years. I was advised to take space from a large bedroom next door to create a much bigger bathroom, with a walk-in shower area, too – a top priority for us. MY WISH LIST Besides the shower, an absolute must-have was some good storage in which to tidy away the relentless clutter. I couldn’t wait to rip the whole room up and start again!

DIY TAPS This utilitarian look is a great solution if you don’t want to disturb finished tiling, brick walls or woodwork. Keep the tap and the pipes exposed by surfacemounting the pipework. If you’re up for the challenge, a DIY copper tap can be a budgetfriendly option. Check YouTube for good step-by-step tutorials. Alternatively, you can find bespoke, floor-mounted taps from BowStreetCraftsCo at Etsy. It’s an affordable style – look for the fittings at a DIY store or plumber’s merchant. Handles can be made from brass stopcocks, lever handles or gate valves.

LET IT RAIN

‘The walk-in shower is perfect for busy morning routines and the drenching from the rainwater head is a far cry from the trickle of the old shower’

vanity unit and sink also caught my eye and I was relieved to incorporate some storage space. I chose a wall-hung toilet, too. With the extra space created, there was enough for a large shower area. I wanted a wet room feel, so we laid the floor tiles uninterrupted throughout. A large shower screen helps to contain the water splashes, and I went for a large ceiling-mounted rainwater showerhead, plus an extra shower rail for flexibility.

A clean slate

I decided to go for a fresh, white colour scheme, with an exposed brick wall for a rustic feel, plus added texture and tone. The brick adds colour and interest to the room, and helps to draw attention to the bath. I’m a huge fan of tiles laid in a herringbone arrangement, so for the other walls, I went for simple white tiles with a dark grey grout. While looking for floor tiles, I came across a white hexagon mosaic design that I knew would perfectly complement the room. To warm up the space, I introduced lots of green plants, on the windowsills and in hanging planters, too. They love the humidity, they cleanse the air and give the room a relaxing tropical feel. It’s also a great way to add a splash of colour. To continue the tropical vibe, I chose leafprint towels, and green accessories. It’s my own tropical oasis and I love it in here.’

A WALK-IN SHOWER

Gina’s choice:

A WALK-IN SHOWER Upgrade your bathroom and fit a flushto-floor walk-in shower or wet room

Wet room or walk-in shower – what’s the difference? A wet room is completely tiled on the walls and floor and sealed underneath, creating a waterproof space. There may be a screen to separate the shower area from the room, but you don’t need a shower tray, as the water drains to a main waste pipe. A walk-in shower requires a shower tray or lip to contain the water.

How do I make the room watertight? To fit a true wet room, you must create a watertight environment by tanking –

BEST FOR… GREAT CHOICE

ALL-ROUND EXPERTISE

Wetrooms Online offers all the kit you’ll need if you’re planning on installing a new wet room, plus you’ll find practical advice, info and help guides.

TILING ALTERNATIVES

B&Q’s new Splashwall laminated panels offer an alternative option to a tiled wet room. Strong and durable, the easy-fit panels provide a sleek, watertight finish that requires little maintenance.

fitting waterproof lining – the floor and walls to completely protect all surfaces from leaks. Once the watertight membrane is laid, the room should be tiled throughout. Remember, you’ll need to incorporate a gentle slope in the floor toward the main shower area, so the water flows away easily into the central waste, usually under the showerhead.

How should I finish the walls and floor? Tiles are the most popular choice, although waterproof panels are an option, too. Choose non-porous tiles like ceramic or porcelain and make sure your floor tiles are non-slip. Porous tiles such as slate, marble and limestone will need sealing every few months to prevent any water damage. Accentuate the sense of space by picking matching wall and floor tiles, or for interest, try creating areas of colour and pattern with contrast tiles or mosaics.

Any other options? If your budget doesn’t allow for a true wet room, then a frameless shower offers a contemporary substitute without the need for an enclosed cubicle. Combined with an ultra low-profile shower tray, they will allow even the smallest of spaces to feel less claustrophobic.

hen we moved into this house five years ago, our daughter Alexa was still in her cot, so I gave her bedroom a quick makeover with a lick of white paint, balloon wallpaper and some fitted shelves,’ says Leoma. My husband Gary and I decided to keep it neutral and just dress it with some pretty accessories and toys until she was a little older, when we planned to redecorate. Now Alexa spends a lot more time in her bedroom, the time felt right to redesign the space and transform it into a multifunctional room that she could sleep and play in. She absolutely loves to draw and colour in, so having a large desk space was one of the top priorities, as well as a bunk bed, which she had been asking to have for years! Unfortunately, the original floorboards in her bedroom (and throughout the rest of the house) weren’t in a good condition when we moved in, so these had to be replaced. But the rest of the room was in a fairly good state, which meant we could update the space without any major decorating work being needed.

REUPHOLSTER A SEAT PAD

Take the seat out of the frame, then repair, repaint or varnish. Remove the old seat fabric, (likely stapled on), and look at the padding underneath. Remove and replace if needed (see step 3). Place the seat frame onto thick foam padding, draw around and use a serrated knife to cut. Place the foam padding and seat on top of calico fabric. Loosely cut around the seat, leaving enough fabric to reach over the edge of the seat base. Pull fabric taut over the foam and seat base, and use a staple gun to secure. Start by stapling the centre of each side. Work your way around, folding corners as you go. Hammer any staples flat and cut off any excess fabric. Repeat steps 4 to 6 with your chosen upholstery fabric.

‘I finished the Ikea drawer unit with handles from The Leather Handle Company at Etsy for a custom finish’

to paint it another colour if she decides she doesn’t like pink in the future. Rather than have a bespoke desk area made to fit the alcove, we cut a piece of worktop to size and fixed it on top of two Ikea cabinets. The cabinets are only 35cm deep, which worked perfectly for this space, as I wanted it to slot in neatly and not jut out from the alcove too much. I added cute handles to the drawer unit to finish it off and then using tester pots I painted three spice racks, also from Ikea, to act as little wall shelves for books and trinkets. The desk chair was another Ikea find, which I painted using a leftover tin of paint to tie it in with the pastel scheme.

Finishing touches

The pale grey walls give the room a neutral base that can be updated with new accessories over time, without the need to completely redecorate. Alexa helped pick out the cushions for her new bunk bed and I used the Graham and

Green rug as a starting point to pick out accent colours for the rest of the room. The balloon wallpaper, which we put up when we first moved into the house, already included pale pink, yellow and blue so I sourced finishing touches like the cotton ball string lights behind the bed and colourful storage boxes to pull the look together. I found Instagram was a great place to gather inspiration and share my own ideas, using my interiors account @styletheclutter. One of my favourite pieces has to be the pink chair, which I stumbled across at Sunbury Antiques Market – it was painted pink and upholstered with a quirky alpaca-print fabric, so it just had to come home with us! Alexa is thrilled with her new room and spends hours up here, colouring and building dens at the bottom of her bunk bed. We hope this new space will suit her for years to come.’

How to lay a

TILED FLOOR

A ceramic tile floor is a practical yet personality-filled choice for busy family spaces. Here’s how to get it right…

W

hether you’re looking for a subtle refresh or a statement design, ceramic tiles are a popular choice for high-traffic areas. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways, they’re not only waterproof, but are easy to keep clean. Laying your own floor isn’t for the faint hearted, but this how-to will put you on the path to tiled floor perfection.

1

Havana White Flower matt tiles, £49.99sq m, Gemini Tiles

SHORE UP THE FLOOR

If possible, remove the existing floor covering – laying tiles on top might make the floor level too high. If you can’t, check your floor is level and secure. Cracked or uneven concrete subfloors should be smoothed with a levelling compound.

2

LEVEL THE SURFACE

Floorboards should be screwed down and covered in 15mm plywood (use a cable and pipe detector to check what’s underneath first). Ensure the subfloor is clean, level and free from dust and debris.

3

FIND THE CENTRE

Find the middle points of the two longest walls and draw a chalk line on the floor between them. Repeat with the shorter walls, so the lines cross. Spread 1sq m of tile adhesive into one of the corners created by the chalk lines. Work outwards, pressing the tiles into place using a tile spacer to create equal-sized joins. Wipe off excess adhesive as you work.

FEATURE STEPHANIE DURRANT

4

NEATEN THE EDGES

When fitting tiles around a fireplace, etc, keep them symmetrical, and avoid having cut tiles along the wall that faces you as you enter the room. When you reach the walls, measure and cut tiles to fill the gaps, leaving space for grout. Use nippers or a file to neaten the tile edges – remember to wear safety goggles.

TRY YOUR HAND AT... MAKING A TERRARIUM

Feeling the urge to sort out your kitchen cupboards? Get started by taking part in a Cricut vinyl label-making workshop by The Makery. Head down to John Lewis & Partners on London’s Oxford Street on 7 or 16 May to design and make your own storage jar labels, using a Cricut Maker or Explore Air 2 cutting machine. You’ll make up to five labels in a number of colours and fonts – all you need is a tablet, phone or laptop to work from during the class, and make sure you measure up your jars in advance. Tickets cost £25, book at themakery.co.uk.

Copper gem terrariums, from £74.95, The Urban Botanist

It’s official – the nation has gone potty for plants. And the hottest way to display your green house guests is in an on-trend glass terrarium. While the high street is awash with ready-made containers, making your own is a fun way to get creative! You can make a terrarium from any glass vessel you like, from an old storage jar to a fish bowl. It’s all about building layers, starting with gravel for drainage, then soil and moss, but different plants favour varying conditions. Ferns and orchids love moisture, but cacti prefer to stay dry, so do your research first. Once you’ve added your plants, have fun making your miniature world come to life.

PALLET PLANTER Author Camille Soulayrol shows us how to upcycle old wooden pallets

D FEATURE STEPHANIE DURRANT PHOTOGRAPH FREDERIC BARON-MORIN BOOK PLANTOPIA: CULTIVATE, CREATE, SOOTHE, NOURISH BY CAMILLE SOULAYROL (£19.95, FLAMMARION)

iscarded pallets are a great source of inexpensive wood and are perfect for taking apart to make into something completely new. If you ask nicely at your local building yard, construction site or garden centre you might even get one or two for free! This easy planter is an ideal project for newbies to upcycling wood as all you need is a hammer, nails and some sandpaper – no fancy tools in sight.

Succulents love a sunny spot

YOU WILL NEED Wooden pallet Nails Hammer Three boards (same width as pallet) Reusable bags Heavy-duty stapler Clay pebbles Soil

1

PREPARE YOUR PALLET Give it a thorough clean with soap and water. Use a hammer to flatten any nails sticking out of the wood and, if necessary, reinforce the joints with additional nails. SAND AND PAINT Any rough surfaces or edges will need sanding to prevent splinters and remove any varnish. If desired, you can then paint the pallet using an outdoor formula, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Alternatively, you can use a clear varnish. ADD THE SHELVES Once completely dry, turn the pallet upside-down. Position three wooden boards the same width as the pallet on one side of the crossbeams to create shelves. Attach them with a few nails. PLANT YOUR BOXES You could also create flower boxes by placing reusable bags within each new shelf. Staple the bags to the wood to hold them in place and pierce to facilitate drainage. Place a layer of clay pebbles in the bottom of the flower boxes, followed by soil. Then just add your plants.
