I

did a full kitchen renovation at the start of the year and boy has it made a diƪerence. Not only did it make a diƪerence aesthetically, but also to the way our home functions and the way we feel about it. Now I can see my son playing when I’m preparing food at the benchtop, where previously my view was blocked by a wall. This also means there’s now plenty of light. Even though we didn’t have oodles of room for more bench space, the addition of an island has meant we have much more usable bench space and more than one person can use it at a time. Ultimately, it’s made my husband and I feel good about living in our home and I think that’s the best part. Planning a kitchen reno of your own? Our Kitchen Living feature this issue has expert design advice as well as the latest trends, Ƭxtures and Ƭnishes. The weather is really heating up and it’s no secret that Aussies love to spend time outdoors entertaining family and friends.

Our special feature explores how to create an outdoor space that will impress your guests and help you get the most out of it year-round. It covers everything from decks and pools to spas and saunas. And for the Ƭnishing touches to your outdoor area, head over to What’s Hot to see our round-up of the latest outdoor furniture. At Home Design we love a good warehouse conversion, and this issue we’ve got an absolute corker. Located within an amazing warehouse development, this former one-bedroom, onebathroom apartment was completely gutted and refurbished to give it two bedrooms, two bathrooms, more storage, a new kitchen and laundry. The result is an uber-cool and moody space. Check it out for yourself. FOLLOW US April Ossington Editor

GLOBAL TREASURES Faina by Yakusha Design is putting Ukrainian design back on the map and breathing life into traditional ancient crafts. DeƬned as a “live minimalist” design collection, the range by architect Victoria Yakusha spans furniture, decor and lighting. Founded on her love and respect for nature, sustainable design and interiors, each piece embraces history within a modern context of clean forms, clean lines, clean volumes and clean textures. “Our ancestors were so connected to nature that they spoke to it. When you are in a space entirely made of natural materials, it is easier to breathe,” says Victoria. “Space is important in interiors. It is freedom. It reminds you that you are alive.” The Faina collection is available in Australia from Tigmi Trading. tigmitrading.com

FEELING SHADY

Lana Launay loves lamps, and we love her striking Shades Launay pieces. Providing an alternative to unethical fast production, using considered materials and textures inƮuenced by her family’s connection with Andalusia and the South of France, Lana employs self-taught weaving techniques to create her unique lampshades. She threads each shade with biodegradable and natural Ƭbres such as coconut shell rope, bamboo stokes, linen, coƪee-stained raƯa leaf and bamboo cotton yarns. These materials are then bound on either salvaged frames or locally handmade frames from Maré Marine. The Shades Launay online store is re-stocked monthly, and Lana also oƪers a bespoke service and collaborates with ceramicists and woodworkers to fashion one-of-a-kind lamps. shadeslaunay.com

PACIFIC PALM BEACH, GOLD COAST Incorporating dynamic form and sliding Ʈoor plates to mirror the rhythmic rolling waves of the ocean, PaciƬc Palm Beach comprises 13 designer luxury apartments, a double-storey beach house and a penthouse with rooftop terrace. Wraparound balconies cocoon each opulent apartment. Inside, premium Ƭnishes dominate the modern interior design and an open Ʈoor plan provides framed views of the beachside setting. STONEY RISE CELLAR DOOR, TASMANIA Expressed through simple architectural gestures such as plinths, edges and blade walls, the Stoney Rise Cellar Door by Cumulus Studio was designed to put the visitor experience at the forefront. Capturing views of Kanamaluka (the Tamar River) to the east and views to a new block of Trousseau grapes planted to the west, the setting is complemented by a stunning interior design. Emphasis was given to locally sourced, natural, untreated and long-lasting materials that will patina and age over time — much like a Ƭne wine. Renewable spotted gum timber wraps from the inside out, while Ʈashes of shiny burgundy mimic the illustrious Stoney Rise wines and a combination of Bowral Blue and locally sourced Daniel Robertson bricks provides thermal mass and grounds the building in its Tasmanian winery context. EUGENIA WILSON

The director of LUMAS Galleries Australia has been an avid art collector for as long as she can remember and ǻnds joy in helping others source a perfect artwork Words Carrol Baker

E

ugenia Wilson has had a colourful and diverse career. She started out as a lawyer and then worked for the United Nations in New York as well as with refugees in detention centres across Australia. Now Eugenia heads up an inspirational art gallery that helps clients source beautiful pieces of art. “I was on a trip to Germany when I came across a LUMAS showroom and I instantly fell in love with it,” says Eugenia. She opened LUMAS Galleries in Melbourne six years ago after looking for a business opportunity that would allow her to operate independently. “I just knew it was going to be a perfect Ƭt for Melbourne and Australian audiences,” she shares. On oƪer at LUMAS is a diverse array of art to suit any taste. The gallery specialises in contemporary photographic works, but

38

alongside that Eugenia says you’ll discover paintings, sculpture, mixed media and more, from international and Australian artists. “The brand ethos of ‘art for all’ is truly brought to life as clients discover the vast selection of works LUMAS oƪers,” says Eugenia. Shopping at LUMAS is not only easy and enjoyable, it also takes the guesswork out of Ƭnding art to suit a particular space. “We are able to super-impose our pieces onto photos our clients share with us of the space they’re considering,” she explains. Knowledgeable art consultants are always on hand to help customers source art that matches the vision, themes and colours they’re drawn to. Limited editions are also made-to-order, says Eugenia. “Our world-famous production partner in Europe begins producing the custom piece suited to the client’s needs,

then the work is shipped over internationally before it’s hung in its forever home.” At the moment, Eugenia is renovating her own home and discovering diƪerent furniture and renovation pieces that she never knew existed. “My friends gave me a CCST lamp as a birthday gift last year, which is very diƪerent and custom-made,” she says. “I can’t go past Yves Klein blue as the colour for interiors. On the wish list is an Arctic Pear chandelier by Ochre. One day!” Then, of course, there is the beautiful art hanging on her own walls. Eugenia knows Ƭrsthand the joy that Ƭnding the right piece of art can bring and she wants clients to experience that. “From curation and selection to helping clients visualise the artworks in their spaces, it’s about being able to conƬdently sell a beautiful product that will last a lifetime.” HD au.lumas.com

MICHAEL CHAZAN

Meet the designer and director of Moda Piera, a bespoke furniture and lighting atelier oǺering a select range of products and custom pieces Words Carrol Baker

W

hen crafting his distinct and unique pieces, Michael says his inspiration is drawn from life and all that it encompasses. “It could be a piece of art or sculpture, the silhouette of a city building, a crack in the pavement or a conversation with a friend,” he explains. His core focus is to oƪer value and sustainability through quality, timeless pieces. From a very early age, Michael had a clear vision: he wanted to be an architect. “I’d spend my pocket money on architectural magazines and dream of designing and building my austere and minimal modernist-inspired dream homes,” he recalls. He started a degree in architecture, but a family friend dampened his enthusiasm with tales of tedious renovations and restrictive budgets. So he switched to the corporate world before being drawn back to

40

home design

design — but this time it was furniture. “In furniture design I saw the ability to own the design process from start to end — from initial concept through to actualisation without the compromise inherent in working on large projects with multiple stakeholders,” he says. After graduating from RMIT, Michael and a friend rented a small space, rolled up their sleeves and went to work — that is between table tennis matches on their table that had pride of place in the centre of the workspace. “Out of this little project we managed to Ƭnd a few willing customers and created some fun pieces while honing our craft,” he says. Moda Piera was eventually borne in 2015 and with a growing clientele of family and friends, the word was out; it wasn’t long before business was booming. “Before I knew it I had a backlog of orders from complete strangers and so the business took form,” he says.

Michael is torn between his two loves — minimalism and maximalism — but the thing that remains constant across both is a focus on materiality. His designs are also innovative and not tied to passing fads. “As I mature as a designer, I feel more of a desire to break the shackles of current trends by introducing more bold and eccentric design resolutions,” he reveals. Among his most popular designs are the sculptural hand-crafted Arancini lamps that develop a beautiful organic patina as they age. Michael wants to continue learning and creating products that he is proud of. “I also want to continue working with some of the amazing retailers and manufacturers that help make my work possible,” he says. He also has some intriguing projects on the horizon. “I’m looking forward to creating some products that straddle the line between art and design.” HD modapiera.com

e all love summer. Poolside barbecues, lazy days at the beach and sultry nights with friends sipping cocktails on the deck. But if you Ƭnd yourself tossing and turning at midnight because it’s just too hot to sleep, it’s time to reassess your home’s thermal climate controls. From simple measures such as window coverings and contemporary ceiling fans to improved window glazing, smart air conditioners and more, there’s lots on oƪer to give you control over your home’s internal environment.

CEILING FANS MAKE COOLING A BREEZE On sultry summer days, a fan can propel air downwards or outwards to create a cooling eƪect. It cools those within the space, not the space itself. Fans are unlike an air conditioner, which lowers or increases the air temperature. A fan moves air over and around the skin, which speeds up the rate at which perspiration evaporates. The electric fan has been around for a long time. It was invented in 1882 by a German immigrant living in America, Philip Diehl, who worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He took a sewing machine motor and integrated it into a fan. Now almost 150 years later, fans have come a long way and they remain one of the most energy-eƯcient and cost-eƪective ways to cool multiple rooms within a home. You can also reverse the direction of the fan so it draws air upwards to facilitate a warming eƪect in winter. Arup Chatterjee from Fans City says ceiling fans are a great way to reduce temperatures in the home. “A ceiling fan can cool down a room a comfortable six to seven degrees, creating a gentle breeze, and they are also very energy eƯcient,” he says. Arup adds that an important factor, sometimes overlooked when buying

a ceiling fan, is the noise level. “An average good-quality ceiling fan noise level start between 33db and 42db; less decibels is better, especially for bedrooms,” he explains. Arup also recommends buying a DC (direct current) motor fan as it’s more energy eƯcient and quieter than an AC (alternating current) fan. Fans have changed over the years, and rather than just being a practical addition to a home, they can also add to the visual appeal of a room. Amber Mostert from Big Ass Fans says there is increasing demand for higherquality materials and more colour options, from standard white to stainless steel. “Today’s

ceiling fans are also making more of a design statement than traditional fans that utilise Ʈat paddle blades,” she says. “With the use of the Haiku fan’s aviation-inspired airfoils that feature a patented twisting, sculpted design, Haiku produces more air while using less energy than a typical ceiling fan.” A fan can also illuminate a room with a combination ceiling light. Ceiling fans can be controlled via switch, remote or as part of your home automation. “With the emergence of smart homes and building integration, the ability to integrate ceiling fans with the home automation system is gaining popularity,” adds Amber.

There are numerous options when it comes to air conditioners, including split systems (air-conditioning units Ƭxed to a wall with the compressor Ƭtted externally) and multisplit systems (where one compressor drives more than one unit.) Ducted air conditioning oƪers the ability to control the interior temperature by pushing cool (or warm) air through pipes into individual rooms. New innovations in air conditioning mean you can control the amount of conditioned airƮow in diƪerent rooms of the house when you zone your air conditioning. Adam Connell, marketing manager at Polyaire, says AirTouch oƪers app control for your air conditioning either at home or elsewhere. “It can send you an alert if your home is getting too hot or cold, inviting you to turn on the ducted system remotely so you can make sure you arrive home to a comfortable house,” says Adam. “AirTouch also integrates with smart voice-activated assistants such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. So if you arrive home with your hands full, you can turn on the air conditioning with a voice command.”

AIR CONDITIONING IS GETTING SMARTER

CLEVER WAYS TO PROMOTE COOL COMFORT There are also many passive ways to improve thermal comfort in your home through the use of thermal mass. This is the ability of a particular material to store heat; products such as bricks and concrete have high thermal mass, with stored heat radiating out slowly. Timber, on the other hand, has low thermal mass. According to Your Home, Australia’s Guide to Environmentally Sustainable Homes, thermal mass, when correctly used, moderates internal temperatures by averaging out diurnal (day) extremes. This has a Ʈow-on eƪect, increasing comfort, and it reduces energy costs. Using the concept of thermal mass wisely, with other measures

such as glazing, shading and insulation, can make a dramatic diƪerence in temperature comfort levels in a house. Geoƪ Marsdon, executive general manager of Bondor Metecno Group, says Insulated Sandwich Panels (ISPs) in residential rooƬng and walling applications can deliver high thermal performance with architectural exterior Ƭnishes. “Studies conducted over the past 10 years by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), in conjunction with Bondor Metecno, have demonstrated that ISPs can create a wellsealed thermal barrier that signiƬcantly reduces air and heat leakage and improves energy eƯciency,” he says. Geoƪ says ISPs can reduce heating and cooling electricity consumption up to 48 per cent of the South East Queensland average. “The best energy eƯciency and indoor comfort results are achieved when ISPs are seen as part of a system, together with elements such as orientation, shading and glazing. “Good design has many

DROP IT LIKE IT’S HOT Australian-made and -engineered, the Luxaflex® Evo MagnaTrack awning is the only straight-drop awning system in Australia to boast a self-correcting feature that allows the fabric skin to effortlessly return to its channel if dislodged. The awning (3.5m opening span width) is able to withstand pressures up to 185kph, making it the strongest straight-drop awning that has been wind-tested in Australia. The use of a quality awning screen, such as the Luxaflex® Spectra Fibreglass Sunscreen, along with the Luxaflex® Evo MagnaTrack awning, can eliminate up to 95 per cent of solar heat penetration, making it ideal for improving a dwelling’s sustainability and energy consumption while helping you feel comfortable all year round. luxaflex.com.au

home design

One of the key components of energy eƯciency is glass windows and doors and their placement, style and glazing component. The use of double or triple glazing boosts comfort levels within a home. The location of windows and doors to allow adequate cross ventilation is also very important. Edith Paarhammer from Paarhammer Windows and Doors says clerestory windows, narrow windows placed at the top of a wall close to the ceiling or roof, are a good energy-eƯcient option. “Openable clerestory windows oƪer the chance to purge hot air that rises to the top of the room. On the other hand, tilt windows at ground level let in cool air,” she says. “The handle controls all the mechanics and multi-point locking within the frame of tilt windows. Automation with concealed chain drive means that for hard-to-reach areas, the windows are operated simply with the push of a button.” From single to double and even triple glazing, there are many levels that directly impact the amount of heat loss or gain in a home. According to Sustainability Victoria, double-glazed windows are a good energyeƯcient option that can reduce heat loss or gain by a whopping 30 per cent when compared to single-glazed aluminium windows. Double-glazed windows will cost you more initially, however with less reliance on other cooling measures such as fans or air conditioners, you may save more in the long run. Making sure any gaps around windows are correctly sealed and keeping internal blinds closed on west-facing windows on hot summer days will also reduce heat gain.

special feature cooling your home

A TREAT FOR YOUR WINDOWS Along with the right glazing and placement, window treatments such as curtains and blinds will also reduce heat loss and gain in a home. One very eƪective blind is the honeycomb style, which, as the name suggests, is made up of honeycomb-like cells linked together. The cells trap air, helping to keep the room cool and cosy. Roman blinds Ƭt snugly in a window frame and are very eƪective, especially when manufactured with a special insulating treatment. Roller blinds can also work well to keep out the heat. Sheer curtains create a soft romantic look to a space, particularly in the bedroom, but sheers won’t keep out the summer heat. This is where teaming them with blinds is a good idea. Layering internal blinds and curtains oƪers a practical and stylish way to control heat and improve thermal insulation. External awnings and shades also play a role in minimising heat gain inside. Some have folding arms, others slide away when they aren’t needed, or they can instantly create more space when fully extended so you can enjoy being outside regardless of the weather. Smart home automation for blinds and awnings brings the ultimate in comfort by allowing you to draw the blinds at the right time of day — even when you aren’t there — so the home is comfortable when you arrive. It’s a clever way to manage not only privacy, but shading and therefore energy eƯciency in your house. HD

n industrial aesthetic meets city style in this converted Melbourne warehouse. Designer Penny del Castillo of Studio del Castillo has given this two-bedroom apartment a new lease on life thanks to striking features such as the exposed brick walls, marble island bench and warm timber Ʈoors. Yet it wasn’t always this visually appealing. “The one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment was well situated within an amazing warehouse development, however the previous owners had not appointed the property with any style whatsoever and there was very little storage,” says Penny. “Aside from the necessity for a practical outcome to service the couple’s changing lifestyle, my observations were that there was a severe lack of continuity between exterior and interior and a severe lack of aesthetic direction. The apartment did not ‘feel’ like it was part of a warehouse conversion.” And so the homeowners embarked upon a renovation that resulted in a totally new apartment. “It was a complete gut and refurbishment of the entire interior space,” continues Penny. “A total rebuild of two

THAT EXPOSED BRICK WALL THAT SETS THE TONE FOR THE ENTIRE APARTMENT bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a new kitchen and laundry. All new furniture and window furnishings were designed, selected and supplied by del Castillo.” Penny’s design process involved stripping away layers of the building to reveal the core strength of the building’s structure, then, piece by piece, rebuilding with a more authentic intent that honoured a single-minded theme. “The heritage red brick synonymous with Melbourne’s enviable warehouse conversions was key to all other selections made. We were aiming to create a sophisticated version of an industrial interior without being too masculine.” The stunning red brick certainly captures the attention when you Ƭrst enter the home. It was just one of the charming Ƭnds the team uncovered during the demolition phase of the renovation, along with the painted numbers on the living room wall. “They were previously covered in layers of 1990s Magnolia White paint,” Penny says. “I was stoked when the sandblaster revealed the ‘artwork’ to me. We spent quite some time negotiating the exact amount of blasting to do of the red bricks around that area.”

Yet this not the sole feature in the apartment that draws the eye. The dining banquette seat is another favourite element of the home. “This generated a huge amount of drawer storage, along with providing luxurious seating in what would have otherwise been a tight space,” says Penny. “The banquette seat drawers have been accessorised with Australian handmade leather handles and the custom-made wall padding and scatter cushions add intrigue with extra layers of textures.” An array of textures continues in the kitchen, where dark cabinetry truly allows the Cote d’Azur natural stone benchtop to be a hero. “During several after-hours appointments, it was apparent that our clients had a great love of wine,” reveals Penny. “We were inspired to keep an open-plan kitchen that provided a perfect platform to create an ambient wine bar experience, where friends can gather around the raised island bench (suitable for up to eight people).” At the same time, the striking bench oƪers a practical solution as a preparation area and coincidentally served as a second home oƯce space during the COVID-19 lockdown. In a small home, light can be limited — yet not in an apartment with a design like this. “Using clever spatial planning within a limited footprint, we have made better use

Sheer and block-out curtains allow your choice of light into the bedroom

of the natural light to penetrate other areas of the property and massively improve the residents’ liveability,” says Penny. Glass walls with sheer and blackout curtains allow light to travel to the far reaches of the bedrooms — and keep them dark when needed. “This solution also allows the rooms’ purpose to remain Ʈuid,” points out Penny. She also kept the environment in mind while working on this space, with all materials sourced ethically and chosen with sustainability in mind. “All appliances have high energy or WELS ratings.” Yet this renovation did not come without its fair share of challenges. Access to the apartment was via stairs only, making deliveries a challenge, and the apartment was situated on the middle Ʈoor of the building, which meant plumbing alterations aƪected residents below and above.

78

home design

Water leaks from other apartments and Ʈooding from the rooftop terrace also impacted the build, but perhaps the biggest delay of all came from the couple. “The clients fell pregnant almost the minute the builders’ contract was signed,” says Penny. This, combined with waiting for the insurance to kick in so recovery works could commence after the Ʈood, and of course the COVID-19 lockdowns, resulted in what was supposed to be a six-month construction program taking two years. The wait was certainly worth it. The clients couldn’t be happier with their new home that was custom-made to suit their lifestyle. “We even selected the Ʈoorboard colour to complement Cedric’s (the family dog) fur coat,” shares Penny. This design certainly proves that good things can come in small packages.{HD delcastillo.com.au

John Eussen celebrates 10 years connecting education to the interior design industry through the

Eussen Student Design Competition 2021 As technology infiltrates our lives, the need for communication and gatherings are more important. than ever. Traditional methods of communication are being sapped up through todays overwhelming pressure of technology in society. The design will show communication innovation. The ‘design’ will offer a sense of purpose, balance, destination and aspiration. 2021 Project 2 Mozaik Play Student Design Competition www.mozaikplay-play.com Through the success of this 10-year project, the brands have now also collaborated with Gabriel Providel, founder Mozaik Play, a student placement agency for the creative industries worldwide, whereby a separate competition has been launched. Once completing Project 2, Core9 Hotel Fitness Centres, the overall winners will receive international scholarships to the world renowned Istituto Marangoni design college in London. The inaugural competition started in 2010 at the Grand Designs Live home shows in Sydney and Melbourne. The competition was originally a 4-month project with 4 design colleges in Sydney and Melbourne where student finalists built their designs at the home shows at the Sydney and Melbourne Exhibition Centres. The finalists were then judged by TV personalities Kevin McCloud Grand Designs UK, Peter Maddison Grand Designs Australia, Shaynna Blaze Selling Houses Australia, and John Eussen Design Commentator with the overall winner being awarded a return flight to Grand Designs Live UK. For 4 years the competition continued to grow and for the past 6 years have been featured in Grand Designs Australia Magazine culminating in 10 years of competitions. The students now present their designs digitally allowing colleges / universities nationally and internationally to compete. Each year a community interest project is considered as part of the design brief, e.g., Ronald McDonald House family unit accommodation, Cana Community homeless accommodation, Barangaroo house supporting indigenous communities, Core9 Fitness wellness centres to name a few. This year’s brief is a live project ‘Fire & Ice’ Boutique Hotel in Wollongong NSW which is due to start the build in early 2022. Each of our generous product sponsors support the project with all students utilising all products in all design entries. 2021 Project 1 Fire and Ice Boutique Hotel Wollongong. The 2021 ’International’ design brief is to work with the hotel developers’ building specifications supporting sustainability and the new “circular economy’ movement. This design is directed by the actual build allowing independent creative license to not be restricted. A circular economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Circular systems employ reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling to create a closed-loop system by minimising the use of resource inputs and the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions.’ Wikipedia 2020 The hotel building complex reflects modern boutique current and future lifestyle trends. The design should reflect living expectations learned and evolved over the past 12 months. The social, mental and physical needs of the ‘said occupant’ are required to support the hotel design.

core9fitness.com.au The Core9 program is a revolutionary fitness regime that provides elite training techniques in a fun, fully flexible 31-minute workout. Core9 is the smarter workout for busy people to continually achieve more innovative, flexible and efficient conditioning workouts, drawing upon elite level performance training techniques. The existing Core9 is inherently Covid safe, and all future modelling should reflect this unique quality in the event of any future such pandemics. Whilst the Core9 model is highly successful in its current market, the design challenge is to adapt the model in a hotel gym environment. The following criteria will form the basis of the design brief. • A 2nd tier Core9 sub brand that aligns the current model whilst adapting it to the hotel market. • Remodelling the lane configuration to a more compromised space 10m x 4m layout and at the same time keeping the 3 minute, 30 second rest, 31-minute total workout • The current model utilises a full time qualified personal trainer at all times guiding members through the workouts. The use of technology and digitalisation adaptation would be expected. • The environment must reflect / compliment the current branding. Colour, signage, font, scent should be in sync. Think the 5 senses and the accessories should be brand aligned creating the Core9 experience, towels, water coolers etc. • The model must reflect the full body, time efficient values that the current Core9 represents. Over the past two years, Annie’s natural creativity and talent have grown with her and been her expression of life as an artist and boarding student living far from home. “Art allows me to reƮect on my past and how much I’ve been through, leaving my family to study here in Australia, and also helps me remember my roots and my culture,” says Annie, citing her mother as a big source of encouragement in strengthening her skills as a child. “It reminds me to be proud of being me.” Growing up, Annie went to a regular Vietnamese primary school. Her parents then sent her to an international secondary school in Vietnam, which she had originally thought to be a mistake on their part. She felt overwhelmed to learn that everyone spoke English. “Then I discovered I had access to so many art materials and started to see the advantages,” she remembers. “I felt I wasn’t very good at communicating verbally, so art became a way to express myself. A way to show my feelings, my values, and a way I could communicate.” Coming to Australia from Vietnam was again quite overwhelming for Annie in Year 10. And starting at CaulƬeld Grammar School as a boarding student halfway through a school year added another layer to her canvas. “Boarding was another new experience for me. I was an international student in a big school, living in a new country, and I came halfway through Year 10, not knowing anyone!” she says. “But everyone was supportive and welcoming.”

During a time when the world should have been opening up to a young, creative mind, the global pandemic hit, halting a lot of things a boarder could normally take for granted, such as being able to travel home during holidays. Annie created Past Lives as a way to make sense of what was happening, and communicate her feelings and experiences around the pandemic as well as the changes and challenges in her life. “I was struggling, homesick, and coming to terms with many new experiences,” Annie admits. “And the pandemic was the background to all of that. So on my canvas the virus is in the background as a big black and white circle, with the clocks representing time and overcoming challenges. A long time since seeing family and going through a hard time.” The clasped hands in the foreground represent the connection Annie has with her people, culture, family, friends — not only in Vietnam, but also new friends she’s made in the boarding house, some in a similar position. “The hands show that as long as my loved ones and I keep connecting, we’ll support each other,” Annie says. “We’re going through it together, even though we’re not physically together.” The colours are striking and add to the emotion she wants to convey. Annie’s current favourite media are gouache and acrylic, although she admits to still investigating her style. “I was inspired by [Russian avant-garde artist] Natalia Goncharova to use only brown, white, black and blue,” Annie says. “To me, this combination shows the struggle and helped me communicate the message of this time being a depressing one. I don’t think the piece would have evoked the same feeling with a brighter colour such as red or yellow.” Annie’s teacher, Chantelle Petith, explains that for Years 11 and 12 at CaulƬeld Grammar School, art is an elective VCE subject. “We have studio arts, art and visual communication and design for students to choose from,” she explains, adding that studies include a range of art-making techniques and historical and cultural connections. The pandemic has meant a lot of missed face-to-face time between students, peers and teachers. “Annie is very creative, naturally skilled, and works methodically to solve artistic problems,” Chantelle says, adding that Annie is currently working on an art folio that explores her cultural and personal identity. “She has displayed resilience, especially considering she has been apart from her family for so long.”

“My art teacher gives me a lot of support,” says Annie, admitting that she tends to want to Ƭt too many themes in one piece. “She helps me narrow down my ideas and gives her perspective and suggestions for what I can do to achieve a clear and more focused piece.” Whatever the future holds for Annie, you can be sure art will feature heavily. “I like that other people might see the emotion and have a kind of spiritual connection with a piece I create.” HD caulƬeldgs.vic.edu.au

A SENSE OF SPACE

Paarhammer windows and doors provide a relaxed lifestyle

A

sanctuary equipped with a sense of space and openness was the goal for the owners of this stunning property in the tourist town of Daylesford in Victoria. Having lived on a farm with space around them, they were fortunate to Ƭnd a north-facing building block on a hill overlooking the township and within easy walking distance of the main street. The land on the hill lent itself to the use of large, glazed areas to capitalise on the views. Extensive glazing also allows the home to reap

86

the beneƬts of solar heat gain in winter. During their research for suitable building materials and products, the owners came across Paarhammer Windows and visited the manufacturing plant to see how these highly energy-eƯcient windows and doors are made. They wanted to support a local business that in turn supports local jobs and suppliers; the timber used for the frames comes from sustainably sourced trees in Gippsland, while the doubleglazed insulating glass units are Australian-made.

When designing the house, the architect included large expanses of glazing to promote light and an indoor-outdoor Ʈow. Coming up the driveway, you are greeted by a modern facade that is almost entirely glass. At the side entrance are timber battens over a glazed door and sidelight combination that provide privacy while allowing the occupants to see who is there. Once inside, your eyes are drawn to an internal water feature and garden sculpture and to the courtyard view beyond. From the living area

you can see in all four directions through tiltand-turn windows, lift-slide sliding doors and the magniƬcent bay window that wraps around a sitting area and soaks up the northerly sun in winter. This once-oƪ modern bay window (without corner posts) allows light to enter from every direction while giving access to the external view and providing a luxurious focal point. The upstairs terrace seems to Ʈoat over the minimalist bay window, whose elevations are carefully shaded by protruding eaves to keep out the summer sun. Operable windows and doors have been positioned on opposing elevations, ensuring airƮow can be regulated to purge the space of hot air and allow a fresh breeze in through cross-ventilation. Low air inƬltration of the well-sealed and energy-eƯcient window and door products ensures a comfortable indoor temperature all year round and no drafts. The windows and doors for this project are from the high-performing Paarhammer Architectural Timber Range. Customers can also choose from the best of both worlds with the Wood-Alu Range, the tested and compliant BushƬre Safe Range (up to and including BAL-FZ), the economical Komfort+ Range, and the highly energy-eƯcient Passive House Range. Each presents a practical solution while delivering high-performance windows and doors with superior results. The architect’s wonderful sense of space has combined with the owners’ impeccable taste, making this a special home where every part of the house and landscaped garden is accessible and usable, with glazed areas providing the perfect indoor-outdoor feel of openness and easy-going liveability. Easy access to the outdoors through several liftslide sliding doors, motorised highlights, tilt-andturn windows and large Ƭxed glazing to enjoy the view all come together to create a relaxed lifestyle. Windows and doors are a major part of this build and in the words of the owners: “These windows make the house!” HD paarhammer.com.au

Launched in July 2021, Cavetto wall panelling joins Intrim Mouldings’ impressive collection of wainscoting, wall battens, timber moulding and lining boards

I

n step with the uptake in DIY home projects over the past 18 months, the scope of wall panel options has grown signiƬcantly. Brought to market in early July, Cavetto is the new lining board product that reads like a love letter to curves and arches, which have recently grown in popularity. “Wall panelling is a very fashionable addition to the home and the trend is here to stay,” says Fred Quinsey, managing director. “There are so many choices to match the vast range of decorating and architectural styles. Intrim oƪers FSC-certiƬed FJ Pine timber for most moulding proƬles. FSC timber is sourced from renewable and responsibly managed forests.” Made at Intrim’s Australian manufacturing facility in Picton, NSW, the tongue-and-groove Cavetto boards clip together easily for a quick and eƪective covering that can be used to dress an entire feature wall. Each panel measures 185mm wide and boasts two distinct scallops which, when joined together, create a continuous scalloped eƪect. Made from MDF and available in lengths up to 5.4m, seamless and join-free results are guaranteed. Paint to match your room decor or make a statement with colour to draw the eye to the wall panelling.

PANEL DISCUSSION

Another popular panelling option is VJ Board Pro, characterised by large sheets (up to 5.4m in length) and eƯcient installation. Run vertically or horizontally, they make a fuss-free wall covering that suits a variety of architectural styles, from Hamptons to coastal and country farmhouse aesthetics. For a narrower line of sight, consider Intrim’s lining boards. Oƪering the same look as VJ Board Pro but with a slimmer proƬle, they are great for wet areas or places where larger panels are not practical. Both VJ Board Pro and lining boards will create the same type of look and can be run vertically or horizontally on a wall or used as a ceiling lining. Synonymous with Hamptons styling, wainscoting wall panelling is a classic look that never goes out of style. The inlay mould choices and styles of wainscoting allow for stunning creativity and personalisation. Wall battens and timber mouldings are Ʈying oƪ the shelves and onto walls across the country. Diƪerent types and shapes of wall battens and mouldings can be used to create artwork treatments on walls and furniture facings. leek. Minimalist. Engaging. All of these terms could be used to describe this Albert Park renovation. Thanks to Robson Rak designers Kathryn Robson and Chris Rak’s unique skillset, what used to be a collection of small older buildings has been completely transformed into a modern masterpiece. This site is located on a leafy street in the beachside suburb of Albert Park. Once, the property boasted a weatherboard cottage and accompanying stables to the rear, yet they weren’t suited to the development the area has undergone in recent years. Robson Rak joined these two structures via a contemporary architectural insertion, which created a single generous contemporary home. “We welcomed the opportunity to create a contemporary new chapter for this former dairy stables while embracing the internal form of the gabled roof,” say the Robson Rak team. “The house required signiƬcant interior alterations to open it up and create a cohesive, functional layout that connected the weatherboard cottage with the brick stables to the rear of the property. We retained many of the heritage features externally, but internally we have transformed the old into a new modern home of contemporary elegance.”

“The home needed to function as a sanctuary”— Robson Rak

Creating a sense of cohesion was a challenge when working with a project of this scope. The building is made up of three distinct forms and styles, including the cottage, stables and glass connection, which required a great deal of sensitivity from the Robson Rak team. It may have been a challenge, yet the result is a visual masterpiece. Externally, the building stretches across the street front with the older redbrick building joined by a more modern L-shaped extension. Small bricks in sandy beach-like tones are pebbled across the exterior, creating a sense of movement. An L-shaped window complements the building’s form and adds further interest — and that’s all before you even step inside. The dramatic gabled roof reaches high above you as walk inside. The height is emphasised with windows and subtle features such as the pendant lights that seem to drop from the heavens into the living room. Chimneys stretch up, up and up, serving as a visual cue to remind the homeowner of the vast space they are living in. A Ʈoating staircase is another feature that really promotes a minimalist feeling and adds visual interest. The grey tones are soothing and create a sense of peace — which is very much in line with what the designers set out to achieve. “The home needed to function as a sanctuary for a busy family who spend much of the year travelling overseas for work,” say the Robson Rak team. “The intention was to create a pared-back, low-maintenance, restorative sanctuary for them to come home to. It was also intended to act as a home gallery space with signiƬcant walls to showcase their established art collection.” And what a collection it is. ProƬles are displayed in prominent positions. These are enjoyed not only from inside the building, but outside too, with many of the features strategically placed in front of windows. There’s even an endearing sculpture of a dog — Tilly Beans, by Jeƪ Thomson — placed under the staircase, almost as if it has Ƭnally found the best place to laze about and capture the afternoon sun. This all succeeds thanks to the subtle design work of Robson Rak, which truly understood the clients’ needs. “Natural stone Ʈoors, pale timber cabinetry, white walls and pale joinery serve as the ideal backdrop for showcasing an abundance of artwork, sculptural pieces and statement furniture,” say the team. “The colour palette was kept neutral and restrained, allowing the internal and external spaces to Ʈow seamlessly into one another. Clean lines and exceptional detailing are the focus in this minimal yet luxurious home.”

Bold furniture choices and feature artworks are allowed to shine thanks to the white walls

Seamless indoor/outdoor living is achieved with the kitchen opening up onto a small courtyard space that allows the family to connect with the world around them while still maintaining privacy. This crossover exists in other sections of the home, too. The old stables building opens out onto a courtyard that features an external Ƭreplace and a small garden, once more encouraging this blend of indoor and outdoor living that is a must for this busy family. One of the most appealing features of this Albert Park home is the sense of timelessness the designers have captured. The older and more modern buildings blend together in the most complementary of ways — and will stay like that well into the future. “We aimed to create a space that was going to be able to stand the test of time and not require updating in the near future,” reƮect the Robson Rak team. “We opted for timeless and hardwearing materials and Ƭnishes. The hope is that the project maintains its style and personality for many years to come.” HD robsonrak.com.au

amble down the garden path and you will discover City Cabin. In among the dense green shrubbery dotted throughout the yard, and seamlessly blending with the golden-brown trunks of the trees, is a twobedroom dwelling that celebrates nature — right in residential Seattle. “The surrounding houses are mostly lowrise ramblers built in the 1960s and ‘70s,” says Jim Olson, design principal at Olson Kundig. “It feels a little bit suburban. Overall, the neighbourhood doesn’t have a strong sense of architectural character, though the gardens tend to be beautiful.” This cabin replaced a 1950s-era home in response to the design needs of the property

104

“The client wanted to create a high-performing home that felt like an urban oasis” — Jim Olson owner, who wanted more than just function from her living space. “The client wanted to create a high-performing home that felt like an urban oasis, where the architecture and landscape were united in one cohesive experience,” says Jim. “She loved my cabin at Longbranch, so we worked to create a ‘cabin in the city’.” Orienting the house in the north-west corner of the lot maximised the area available for the yard — a clear hero of the property. THE USE OF TIMBER THROUGHOUT THE HOME THAT MAKES IT FEEL AT ONE WITH THE ABUNDANT GARDEN plants and established trees make this home feel as if it’s not in the middle of a residential area but in some kind of natural retreat. “Fullheight window walls overlooking the gardens reinforce this visual connection to the ‘urban wilderness’,” points out Jim. Full-height windows aren’t the only connection to nature the property enjoys. The heart of the home is the kitchen and living space, where open timber shelving stretches up to the 16ft-high ceiling. A library of books lines the shelves, with a ladder provided to make access to those very top volumes easy. Native American art is celebrated everywhere you look — on the shelves, above the bench, and on the sideboards and walls. This extensive collection served as further inspiration for the interior Ƭnishes, as well as providing splashes of earthy colour throughout the home and marrying the dwelling with the landscape once more. At the very top of the walls, slim horizontal windows let in extra light, ensuring the timberdriven interior never feels too dark. The ceiling’s dramatic height is emphasised by four pendant lights suspended over an impressive island bench with a rich history.

The building was positioned in the north-west corner of the property to maximise the garden space

“The kitchen island is a slab of Douglas Fir from a tree that was unearthed by a farmer dredging a Ƭeld,” shares Jim. “Our builder had it carbon-dated at the University of Washington and discovered it was 2700 years old!” The bench was matched to this impressive island with a cast-in-place concrete-topped slab tinted in a terracotta hue. The combination is a recipe for warmth, complemented by the texturally appealing furnishings and homewares. Concrete Ʈoors were waxed and tinted in the same terracotta hue as the benchtop to continue the relationship between the building and its surrounds. This also adds a sense of cosiness. From the kitchen and living space, two wings extend: one to the master suite of the property and the other to a guest bedroom, complete with ample storage. As you travel from one wing to the other, natural light shines in through the windows, illuminating your path. This single-storey residential home also features two bathrooms and a garage. Respect for the environment played a big part in the building’s design. “The client had goals for a high-performing home that integrated with nature as she has a longstanding engagement with environmental conservation,” reveals

we love THE WAY THIS HOME WAS DESIGNED TO BE AN OASIS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY Jim. “The home is designed for natural ventilation and incorporates key sustainability features, such as an 8.4kW photovoltaic array, an air-to-water heat pump, low-energy appliances and low-Ʈow plumbing Ƭxtures.” Reclaimed timber siding was used on the interior and exterior of the home, conserving resources and also strengthening the bond the building shares with the garden surrounding it. And on top of the home, pops of green wave in the breeze thanks to a sedum green roof that ensures nature is given every chance to thrive on this property. Much like a Ƭne wine, City Cabin is maturing over time. The garden continues to grow with glorious abound and the exterior siding is weathering and developing a charming patina that feels comfortable and warm. The homeowner loves the property and enjoys spending time in this Seattle-based retreat that feels light years away from the hustle and bustle of the city — much to Jim’s delight. “I hope the realisation of this concept will inspire other people to bring nature into the city and live in a sustainable manner,” reƮects Jim. “If everyone in the city lived in a small, net-zero house surrounded by a beautiful garden, I think the world would be a happier place. The animals and local ecosystem would beneƬt, and of course the people would beneƬt, too.”We can’t help but agree. HD olsonkundig.com; dovetailgc.com

In this expansive Balmoral home, the sea breeze dances in the surrounding trees and drifts through the large open windows, reminding the family that they live in a true beachside paradise. Yet it wasn’t always this way. Once, this block of land was home to a small cottage that was truly undersized for the block. it seem as if you’re seated among the treetops while enjoying your morning cup of coƪee. These north-facing windows also allow for the optimal amount of sun in the home. “It is a tranquil family home that puts you at ease while inside. The house reveals itself to you slowly through curated views rather than just an overwhelming expanse,” Victoria says. “This is reinforced by the subtle detailing around the house, such as the timber board panelling that provides texture to the walls.” This panelling promotes that beachy feeling that’s prevalent in the house, along with subtle details such as the exact tone of the timber used to line the steps and create a built-in feature desk. The rich blonde shade is reminiscent of the golden rays of the sun glinting on the sand. The kitchen also enjoys a sense of peace, with all the usual benchtop appliances concealed in the walk-in pantry. This allows the main body of the room, including the stone-topped island bench, to present more like furniture than a place of industry. When combined with the open pendant lights and the natural greenery scattered here and all throughout the home, that sense of relaxed family living the owners desired is achieved. The bathrooms here are tranquil. White creates a sense of space and allows the subtle detailing of the shell-like tiles to shine. A luxuriously long bath sits opposite the double vanity with a wall recess above it, perfect for all those soaking essentials. Natural light is abundant in the house through both the windows and the clever use of light wells, which oƪer illumination in spaces that could otherwise be quite dark. Passive cooling was also considered, with natural ventilation maximised to try to limit the home’s impact on the environment. An expansive undercover deck is the perfect location for entertaining all year round, with glass fencing allowing for safety concerns without impacting the view. Follow the garden path around the home and get lost in the levels of the retained gardens, resplendent with lush green grass and of course the contemporary pool. The whole property truly embodies the laidback Australian lifestyle, all while enjoying the many beneƬts nature has to oƪer. “Living in a ‘Ʈame zone’ does not mean we cannot have serene and beautifully designed spaces,” Victoria says. Yet the apartment didn’t always enjoy this inviting design. “The authentic space was quite dark and featured a non-functional layout with lots of small spaces and basic structures,” recalls Victoria Yakusha of Yakusha Design. “Having discussed the project with the clients, we focused on making the apartment as functional and eƯcient as it possibly could be.” This started with the storage. At Rodyna apartment, wardrobes and storage facilities are built in and don’t overload the space. This is never more obvious than it is in the kitchen. Here, a sliding timber partition separates the room from the open-plan living/dining area. A small utility area plays home to pantry items and an elegant marble bench helps indicate clear working zones. Minimalist timber cabinetry hides a multitude of functional areas. “All working surfaces, Ƭttings and utensils are tucked away inside walnut cabinets with pocket doors, so this is a visually clean, comforting space,” says Victoria. “When you open each module, you see how everything is functionally planned. One module includes a sink and built-in dishwasher; another hides a working surface. The kitchen system combines ergonomics and aesthetics.” This system was custom-made by an Italian manufacturer to ensure everything Ƭts seamlessly.

Indeed, seamless living is a theme that runs throughout the apartment. “If we talk about the walls, it’s like a seamless pattern. You don’t see transitions or joints anywhere. Glass panels smoothly transit into the cabinets, which transit into doors which transit into walls again,” says Victoria. “Sometimes we Ƭrst mounted the cabinets and then did the Ƭnishing work so that the cuts wouldn’t be visible.” Despite this seamless design, the entire apartment boasts clearly deƬned sections. “We changed the initial zoning, focusing on functionality. In the newly designed apartment, the children’s area is located in one block while a parents’ bedroom with their own bathroom and laundry room is in another.” These bathrooms are diƪerent, but all have one thing in common: functionality. “The children’s bathroom is designed for two sons, so everything here is adjusted to meet the needs and comfortable use of both. Cabinets and wash basins are made to order. The mirrors feature built-in shelves for care products,” says Victoria. The master bedroom features a partial wall behind the bedhead that employs a glorious ribbed texture, which is simply begging to be touched. This hides the walk-in robe, again ensuring storage needs are met yet not at the cost of design. Curved bedside tables and lights add a sense of continuous movement that is echoed throughout the home in the bathroom’s circular mirror and the rounded base of the chairs in the dining area. Even the small details, such as the lamp in the cabinet oƯce space, boast a curvaceous design. Back in the living area, it’s less about business and more about family. Natural colour abounds, with greenish hues serving as a base highlighted by terracotta, timber and brass. “We didn’t want to create a traditional beige interior, but rather to bring more vibrant living shades,” says Victoria. Even the Ʈoor enjoys this special treatment, with tiles in the hall and kitchen and aged parquet boards everywhere else adding depth and a sense of character. Mixed materials were used throughout the apartment. Mirrors add a sense of space, and brass and walnut features oƪer a connection to nature and a feeling of warmth. “We were excited to work with brass and walnut. I love working with diƪerent materials, mixing and matching,” says Victoria. “We also used living materials such as timber and clay. The clay decor includes authentic design objects from the FAINA collection made by Ukrainian artisans.” All these elements combine to create an apartment that is simply perfect for this family, who adore their new abode. MADE BY PEN Meet Amy Sellick, director at Made by Pen — the collaborative brand on everyone’s lips Words Louise Smithers

M

ade by Pen (Pen) is an Australian product design studio founded on the principles of good design and innovative simplicity. Partnering with Australia’s most inspired designers, architects and makers, Pen delivers products that are authentic, wellresolved and set to last a lifetime. “Pen was formed to bring innovative and aƪordable homewares to design-lovers,” says Amy Sellick, director at Made by Pen. “As a studio, we have committed to collaborating with Australian designers and craftspeople to promote Australian design to the global market.” It is this passion for collaboration and superior design that sets Made By Pen products apart. Far from cookie-cutter commodities, each item is conceptually rigorous and aesthetically elegant. “We are motivated by progress,” explains Amy.

142

“Pen’s studio collection is designed to make the places we work, live and play in more functional, beautiful and evolved.” As a studio, Pen considers what is missing from the market and Ƭlls the gap with outstanding pieces, such as the chic Sway lamp, the contemporary Linea table-top organiser, Alas wall hook and The Dog Room, one of Pen’s most popular designs. “We worked with Michael Ong, an award-winning Melbourne architect, to create a functional and beautiful space for people’s dogs,” Amy notes. “Our original run of the product sold out and we thought we had saturated the market. We had underestimated the appeal of the product and people were constantly asking us to produce more. We decided to, but the second time around we tried to put more ‘good’ into the product. That was our Ƭrst partnership with Help Manufacturing

(a Queensland-based not-for-proƬt that specialises in providing opportunities for people with disabilities) and that really set the stage for further collaboration.” Underpinned by the success of their collaborative relationships, Pen partners with designers and architects who can visually transform their idea or narrative into a design. “To make our designs into products, we need to forge partnerships with a huge number of manufacturers,” elaborates Amy. “For us, relationships are pivotal to our collection outcome, which is why we seek likeminded people to partner with. To date, we have chosen talented, forward-thinking people such as Nick Rennie, Jim Hannon-Tan, Helen Kontouris and Michael Ong.” So, what’s next for Pen? The team is working with a Melbourne-based designer to create

an object inspired by time spent at home and the need for a peaceful, green existence against the backdrop of the pandemic. Help Manufacturing will again be called on to bring the piece to fruition and continue Pen’s dedication to the greater good. “We believe that, if you work as hard as you can to do and be good in your process, the products you create will be imbued with your invested positivity,” concludes Amy. “We spend time and eƪort Ƭnding people with this same view, from our designers through to our production partners. We don’t want to work with people who simply want to trade a product for the most money possible. We want people who are happy doing good. It’s our sincere hope that everyone involved in Pen’s process, especially the Ƭnal consumer, experiences the good in our products.” HD madebypen.com

ANDRIA BEIGHTON 1/ Andria is inspired by graphic, textile, object and architectural design from the 1930s to the 1970s. Often viewing a simple shape of an architectural detail or a textile colour palette will result in an entire concept for an artwork or series. Since the pandemic started, Andria has been working from a corner of her lounge room which looks out onto a plant-Ƭlled courtyard. Her studio space merges with the rest of the apartment so there is art everywhere. She says it’s a pretty, bright and Ʈowery space these days. Andria has always been creative. She took up painting in 2018 and began showing her work. The response was so encouraging she became a full-time artist. Andria has had some incredible opportunities and is constantly learning and reƬning her art practice. bluethumb.com.au/andria-beighton

YELENA REVIS

2/ Yelena is a qualified professional artist working from her studio in Sydney. She creates colourful, whimsical, abstract paintings. She loves experimenting with mixed mediums, oils, acrylics, charcoal and inks to create different styles and textures. Yelena’s paintings are inspired by memory, meditation, music and the culture and essence of Australian nature. She has always loved movement and colour, particularly the interplay of colour in nature. Throughout her career, Yelena has accumulated a vast repertoire of artistic techniques. Her aim is to create unforgettable works and impart a deep emotional connection between objects and humans whenever she begins a new piece. What drives her art practice is an openness to possibilities, and a willingness to take on new challenges and engage creatively as often and in as many ways as she can. yelenaartstudio.com 148

MARTINE VANDERSPUY 3/ Martine grew up on four continents before Ƭnally settling in Australia. She studied graphic design and set up a multiple award-winning graphics business and then established the Martine Gallery in 2015 in Sydney. Martine has experimented with many diƪerent mediums. Resin, however, has become her favourite. Using many layers, the resin creates vibrancy, colour and clarity, the shadows and the glint of light on water. Martine says the tactile nature and depth of the resin almost allows you to dive into the artwork. She aims to create artworks that lift people’s spirits by viewing the ever-changing ocean. Martine is inspired by the ocean: its power, beauty and tranquillity. She brings the energy of the sea back to her son, who suƪers from mitochondrial disease. He is about to undergo his 53rd operation at the age of 18. Through her art, Martine has donated more than $300,000 towards research. martinegallery.com

TILLIAN 5/ For Tillian, art is the living water that sustains him. A fountain of inspiration suddenly rises and like the rainbow in falling rain, paintings appear. The beauty and intricacy of the natural world has fascinated Tillian for as long as he can remember. It has stimulated and inspired all his journeys in art and life. He says the exploration of his chosen natural sites using abstracted shapes, symbolic colours and black/white evokes a strong sense of both actual and mythological place. For Tillian, the inscrutable architecture of nature, arranged in leaf, rock, sky and cloud, forms the grounding for embedded glyphs. A language of signs and signals forms during the spontaneous act of painting, which to him is a type of conscious dreaming. His wide multipanel friezes are visual narratives tracing passages in cyclic time and space. artloversaustralia.com.au/artist/tillian

4/ Katie is inspired by texture, colour combinations and accidental gestures that come together to create each original painting. She uses a lot of paint because the product itself is as much a part of her process as the subject matter. Her work is very loose and representational. Katie was young when she discovered the pure joy of creating. Her parents always offered encouragement and her mum kept her stocked up with sticky tape, paper, pens, pencils and empty cereal boxes. She likes her pieces to trigger happy memories in her viewers, especially her beachscapes. She says we are so fortunate in Australia with our spectacular coastline and thinks most people have a fond beach memory that can relate back to her work in some form. bluethumb.com.au/Katie-Wyatt

JUDITH DALOZZO 6/ Judith’s work spans abstract, still life, nudes and landscapes, both urban and rural. As a contemporary artist, her art merges the traditional with the modern. She says transformation is the biggest rule of her creative process. As she changes and evolves as a person, so does her art. Oils are her preferred medium for the Ƭnely executed still-life paintings and for practical reasons, she uses acrylics for the city scenes and vibrant, textured abstracts on large canvases. Acrylics allow Judith to be more impulsive, expressive and layer texture instantaneously. She aims to impart a sense of harmony and balance, evoking in the viewer a feeling of calm and happiness. Ultimately, she wants to create something new and vibrant that people can live with and look at with increasing pleasure. dalozzoart.com

LUCINDA LEVEILLE This talented artist never stops striving for perfection Words Carrol Baker

L

ucinda Leveille’s father was an artist, so the creative gene runs deep in her family. At the age of 15, Lucinda begged her mother to let her leave school to study art and she threw herself into her studies at the National Art School in Sydney. For Ƭve years she studied anatomy, perspective, colour theory, graphics, sculpture, painting, drawing and photography, but after graduating from her studies, Lucinda’s hopes were cruelly crushed. “I had a shaky start as an artist just out of art school, when a gallery owner shattered my dreams telling me to Ƭnd another career,” she recalls. As a result, Lucinda put away her brushes. Fast forward a decade and Lucinda slowly began to dabble again from time to time in her art. Now her artwork is held in collections across the globe, in England, Spain and America,

150

home design

as well as in Parliament House in Australia. Lucinda has established herself as a talented artist working in watercolour, oils, mixed media and drawing with graphite and pencils. In her paintings she enjoys moving from realistic representation to a more expressive style. “The one common thread through all my works is the genre that is landscape,” she says. Although her work embraces many artistic disciplines, she says her Ƭrst love is Ƭgurative sculpture. “I rarely work in that genre now, but it still holds a very special place in my heart,” reveals Lucinda. She created a piece once with Romeo and Juliet as the theme and it’s the only work she won’t part with. Some of Lucinda’s recent work deftly explores deep emotions, delving into the often-complex human psyche. It represents the solitary in the landscape, using the visual

image of storm clouds roiling around a single object that is stationary. “How often we all feel that way, chaos surrounding you, while you seem to be suspended in time. Perhaps the pandemic situation has accented those feelings,” she muses. Lucinda’s philosophy on art and life is that they share a symbiotic relationship. “Each breathes life into the other,” she believes. She is passionate about creating art, often rising at 5am to paint in her studio for 12 hours at a stretch. Lucinda is driven to hone her craft and to keep learning and growing as an artist. She is inspired by the words of much-loved Australian artist Margaret Olley. “She once said that her last piece was her best piece because what she had learnt from that she took to the next,” says Lucinda. “I’m always trying for that perfect artwork.” HD artloversaustralia.com.au

I

f you are planning a kitchen renovation, getting the right balance of function and form is key. You want your kitchen to look warm and welcoming, but also to be practical both in design and layout.

WHAT TYPE OF KITCHEN DO YOU NEED?

Image courtesy of Beacon Lighting. beaconlighting.com.au

156

home design

With more homeowners embracing apartment-style living, compact kitchens are more in demand. When space is at a premium, design becomes even more important. For example, a kitchen island that extends into a dining space, and clever storage solutions that make the most of every bit of space, is ideal. If you are planning a family kitchen, creating one that oƪers Ʈexible solutions as the family’s needs change is a good idea. A generous kitchen bench that becomes a place for arts and crafts for pre-schoolers can serve as a homework space when the kids become teenagers. Perhaps your kitchen is the go-to space for gatherings with your friends? Ideally, an entertainer’s kitchen is warm and welcoming and it also has loads of visual

appeal. A butler’s pantry, plenty of mood lighting and ample seating spaces are the order of the day. There are many diƪerent kitchen layouts, including the straight-line style that is the mainstay of smaller apartments. There are also L-shaped kitchens, galley style and U shaped, which oƪers a lot of design Ʈexibility. The most popular style in contemporary homes is open plan to visually connect to the rest of the house. Planning the shape of your kitchen can also be dictated by proximity to outdoor spaces, gas and plumbing.

A HIGH-END LOOK WITHOUT THE PRICE TAG A new kitchen is an investment in your family’s lifestyle. Given there are utilities to consider, as well as inbuilt cabinetry, renovating a kitchen is one of the more expensive spaces to renovate. Establishing a budget of your must-haves, and those features you are prepared to negotiate on, is important. Once you have developed a wish list, consult with a quality kitchen design company.

feature kitchen living

The right company can help you to cross a few more of those “wants” oƪ your list. This is because there are many ways to create a stylish contemporary kitchen without breaking the bank. Achieving the look you want for less begins with key elements such as benchtops. Kirby Saunders from Saunders Building Company says stone thickness is one way to save money. “In an expensive kitchen you might have 40, 60 or even 80mm stone thickness. To lower your price point, you could have 20mm thickness and still get the same eƪect,” explains Kirby. The materials used in cupboard doors also impact on price. “Two-pack is the most expensive with the proƬling, Shaker doors etc, but there are ways to pare that back and go with more of a Ʈat panel of melamine,” he adds.

OPEN-PLAN KITCHENS These are popular in contemporary homes, but given they are very much on display, creating a sense of cohesiveness and unity with the rest of the home is important. Philip Ryder, design and product manager of Kinsman Kitchens, says one way to achieve this is through matching cabinetry. “It’s a wonderful way to create a sense of harmony and connection throughout your home,” he says. Philip adds the scale of joinery is another key issue. “Think about how much space the kitchen will take up while still ensuring there is room for other zones such as living, dining and home oƯce in the open-plan area,” he says.

STYLISH STORAGE When renovating an older kitchen, consider drawers under benches in favour of cupboards. Kirby says that you can see what’s there at a glance, instead of having to rummage around at the back of a cupboard. “Drawers are very popular right now and you can access what you need easily,” he says. “They also allow designers to maximise space in the kitchen. In the past they’d often put a void in a hard-to-access corner cupboard.” Cupboards are still very handy for storing heavy items such as food processers and above-bench cupboards work well for easy access to a toaster or kettle. No matter what style of kitchen you’d like, practical storage solutions will allow your room to be more streamlined and organised. Philip says pull-out pantries allow you to maximise your space and keep everything within reach. “They are a great solution for those tricky spots and the

shelves are fully adjustable so you can arrange them however you like to ensure all your pantry staples can be stored properly,” he says.

LIGHTING UP YOUR KITCHEN When planning a new kitchen, task lighting over workspaces is important and can look good, too. Philip says a smart and considered lighting plan is often overlooked at the design stage. “It can actually transform your kitchen, both in terms of style and functionality,” he says. A mix of LED downlights and uplights under cabinetry and LED strip lighting underneath can take care of practical task lighting and create an inviting warm glow in a kitchen. Beautiful contemporary pendants over an island can take a kitchen to the next level of design.

KITCHEN HARDWARE Even if you’re on a tight budget, don’t skimp on kitchen hardware. It deƬnes the look and feel of a kitchen. Gary O’Neill from Marina Isles Fine Architectural Hardware says choosing cabinet hardware should be a priority as it’s

158

home design

the Ƭnishing touch to your kitchen design. “Even a modestly priced kitchen can be enhanced by spending a little more on your hardware,” he says. When it comes to colours and styles, Gary says polished chrome remains a timeless Ƭnish and metals are also popular. “Satin brass, bronze and satin nickel are the current favourites, with raw brass (which will patina) also in demand for a bespoke look,” says Gary. Hardware with a knurled Ƭnish is being favoured by designers with industrial deco hardware, and linear designs are also in vogue, he adds.

MODERN TAPWARE When planning your kitchen, picking tapware can be confusing, but according to Chantelle Malone, marketing manager of Phoenix Tapware, it need not be. “One of the biggest considerations is the size and height of the spout in relation to your sink bowl,” she reveals, adding that a spout that reaches the centre of the bowl is most convenient. “Swivel taps oƪer greater Ʈexibility as they allow you to position the tap between two separate sinks,” she says. “Pull-out mixers

are also a good option if you have a large sink as they help get to those hard-to-reach corners for cleaning.” Tapware also needs to blend with the rest of the kitchen design. For example, a tap with sharp angles and straight lines may look good in a similarly Ƭnished kitchen, while a softer curve may be more appropriate if your home is going for a more elegant look. According to Chantelle, statement tapware is taking centre stage. “Think metallic Ƭnishes to match highlights used throughout the kitchen and home, such as brushed nickel, brushed gold or matt black. Matching with the sink Ƭnish also works well,” she says.

BENCHTOPS AND SINKS Aesthetics are key when choosing benchtops and sinks, but practical considerations such as resilience, durability and hygiene are also important, says Kate Deakin-Bell, Cosentino marketing manager. “The benchtop is the most-used surface in the kitchen — a place to prepare food, eat, socialise and work. It needs to be durable and resistant to spills, stains and scratches, and a no-maintenance

material, such as Dekton® or Silestone®, will be very easy to look after,” she says. As well as materials such as engineered stone, there are other beautiful surfaces to consider. Timber adds an earthy organic warmth to a kitchen, laminate is a budget option with improved durability, and stainless steel is also gaining traction as a favourite. Polished concrete is another great option as it’s very strong and instantly adds a high-end look. The kitchen sink is another important component to consider. Kate says it needs to withstand impact, high temperatures and frequent exposure to water and grease. “A low-porosity material will provide this resilience, as well as being safe and hygienic,” she explains. Stainless-steel sinks are becoming more elegant and concrete provides a bespoke option. Also growing in popularity are surfaces with dramatic veining, adds Kate. “Used on a kitchen island, splashback or a feature wall, they add sophistication, luxury and wow factor to a space,” she says.

DON’T FORGET THE DISHWASHER Incorporating a dishwasher into your kitchen design and layout shouldn’t be an afterthought. Damian Harpantidis from Harp Industries says before you buy, ensure the correct space has been allocated for the dishwasher as dimensions do vary. “With diƪerent options and ratings for sound and water eƯciency, a model with a power wash button is a handy feature,” he says. “An Aquastop is also worth considering and may impact Ʈood cover in some instances depending on the insurer.” Installation to current NCC requirements should be completed by a licensed installer or

160

plumber. Damian says brands such as Miele will also complete dishwasher installation with Cabiseal for a seamless Ƭnish. “Although widely available to professionals on request, it may still be a special order through Bunnings,” he says. A handy hint from Damian: The Cabiseal Ƭtting is also designed to seal the kickboard cavity below from spiders and other household pests.

AN ELEGANT MAKEOVER Old English vibes mix with modern elements in this renovated bathroom and laundry in Brighton Photography Patrick Redmond Photography

E

mbracing Space is known for creating highly personalised projects that are as stylish as they are functional. Case in point: this beautiful Brighton renovation. The clients have a penchant for traditional styling and requested a modern twist on the aesthetic when brieƬng Embracing Space with overhauling their bathroom and laundry. After the wall between the existing bathroom and bedroom was removed, a new wall was installed to make the bathroom smaller and oƪer more liveable proportions in the bedroom.

162

home design

“Normally I make bathrooms larger, so I had to be careful that when reducing the width of the space, it wasn’t going to make it too small,” says Teresa Kleeman, interior designer at Embracing Space. “It Ƭts a toilet, large vanity, walk-in shower and freestanding bath perfectly.” The freestanding Bahama matt-white stone bath acts as the focal point of the space as it sits serenely in front of a feature wall tiled in Southern Cross Winchester Ocean ceramic tiles. “The back wall of the bath was always planned to be a feature wall, but we weren’t quite sure which

way to go — Classic Encaustic Style or an actual larger tile in a pattern,” continues Teresa. “Once we selected the feature tile, all other design elements worked beautifully with the scheme.” A grey porcelain matt Ʈoor tile helps deƬne the feature wall, while Brodware Neu England tapware plays into the “traditional” aspect of the design. Proving that arches are well and truly back in fashion, an arch mirrored shaving cabinet provides stylish amenities, while a high window was precisely placed to allow for natural light without compromising the owners’ privacy.

ed’s fave THE TILED FEATURE WALL Over in the laundry, Embracing Space has left its mark with an updated room that makes the previous laundry (which was devoid of bench space and functional storage) feel like a bad dream. Teresa wanted to ensure both spaces worked in harmony. By taking one of the blue tones present in the bathroom and applying it to the laundry, she hit the nail on the head! “Storage was very important,” Teresa notes. “Having a hanging rail to dry clothes was also essential. Due to it being such a small space, I had to make sure the storage design was executed precisely.” To give the laundry equal depth on each side, the entrance doorway was moved. This has resulted in a more functional room where ample storage sits on one side and the benchtop, sink and washing machine/dryer sit on the other. “Hidden behind the entrance door is wall-towall storage to the ceiling with doors that hide everything but give a grand feel to the relatively small space,” Teresa notes. Other elements include the feature tile splashback, a pull-out drying cupboard rack, long hanging rail with LED strip lighting and the crisp Quantum Quartz benchtop. The sense of tradition displayed in the bathroom extends to the laundry, where Shaker-proƬle joinery was implemented with a sumptuous satin Ƭnish. Impressed with what you see? COASTAL FARMHOUSE

C

hic and elegant, with coastal aesthetics contrasted with a pop of colour, this unique renovation makes the kitchen the centrepiece of the residence. The team at Seavern brightened up a room that hasn’t been revamped since the 1980s. A lot of love went into this redesign. The homeowners enjoy regularly hosting guests, so accessibility and ease of storage were paramount. To accommodate this, the bench was kept oversized, so anyone in the kitchen could get involved in the cooking and entertaining experience. A concealed pantry with plenty of generous storage was also added to reduce clutter and and keep ingredients at arm’s reach. To top it oƪ, the laundry acts as a connection to the space, with an added mudroom feature and powder room. Rest assured that if you’re ever invited to wine and dine in this spectacular area, the hosts have deƬnitely got you covered! But what we truly love about this kitchen is the subtle detail of the mango timber trim, servery and chopping block. Traditionally milled

164

from a fallen mango tree on the property, the material holds a special place in the hearts of the homeowners. The team at Seavern cleverly incorporated the mango timber as a vibrant contrast to the clean white palette, adding a hint of welcoming warmth. To Ƭnish oƪ, the concrete Ʈooring grounds the entire area that ensures cohesive coastal style that’s pleasing to the eye. The result is a modern farmhouse feel that invites you in with its mixture of warmth and cool contemporary aesthetic. HD

alm Springs has come to life at this Ocean Grove home thanks to the team at Geelong Tiles & Bathware. Contrasting tropical hues of pink and green adorn the entire abode, including the main bathroom and ensuite. The brief stipulated a forever home that replicated resort-style accents, and the owners worked closely with Mel Wilson Interiors and Geelong Tiles & Bathware to have their vision delivered. One of the standout features in the main bathroom is the Concrete Nation basin, its dusty-pink hue complementing the Petti Bella matte pink tiles perfectly. This is further illuminated by the champagne tapware and bamboo handles, in which blush and bronze tones create an impeccable union. Arched shapes are trending so the mirror really helps to Ƭnish oƪ this space in a contemporary way. Bright and tropical vibes continue in the

This ensuite is fun and colourful, further complemented by the Concrete Nation basin which was Ƭttingly chosen in a mint tone. The Arc basin also creates synergy with the curves in the bath. Additionally, the terrazzo-look porcelain tiles add just enough interest to the Ʈoor, while still drawing the eye to the bright wallpaper. Throughout the house, tropical wallpaper lines the walls of some bedrooms and the powder room, continuing the resort-like theme. No stone was left unturned in the construction of this beautiful home, which wraps around the courtyard pool. SMOKE AND MIRRORS A compact bathroom that leaves a big impression

ood design in the bathroom can have an almost magical eƪect. That’s certainly the case in this space from Above All Bathrooms, where smart layout and Ƭnishes have resulted in a room that’s far more than just smoke and mirrors. The previous bathroom was a small space with dated tiles, Ƭxtures and Ƭttings. While Above All Bathrooms couldn’t increase the actual footprint, the team worked their magic to make the space feel larger — starting with the tiles. A large 300mm x 600mm tile was chosen to add a sense of luxury, with the contrast between the lava stone and white Ƭnishes adding interest. This instantly gave the room a lift and brought it into the modern day since the previous tiles really gave away the age of the space.

170

The frameless shower screen again enhances the feeling of space in the room. The screen is also very easy to clean — an essential requirement and design consideration from the owner of this home. Freestanding baths create a sense of grandeur, and this one certainly meets that brief. It’s simple yet modern and luxurious, and the white gloss Ƭnish harmonises with the white gloss tiles on the wall. Extra storage was provided with the overhang cupboards, which marry function with a fashionable sleek and contemporary Ƭnish. HD

THE CUSTOM GLASS SPLASHBACK

RETRO REVOLUTION

A touch of ‘70s swagger Photography Patrick Redmond

L

iving with a stylish (for its day) but totally outdated 1970s kitchen, these homeowners wanted to upgrade to a space with a contemporary look and modern functionality, without completely losing the ‘70s-era aesthetic. Removing the pine laminate overlay doors and red-tiled benchtop (the Ƭrst thing to go), the kitchen was de-‘70s to make way for new Ƭttings and Ƭxtures with a more neutral and contemporary material palette. Cabinetry in matt steel grey now frames the space, providing a solid framework that supports the signiƬcant ‘70s architectural features of the property but brings it solidly into the 21st century. Plastered walls and dark cabinetry set the scene for the hero moments in the kitchen that include timber cladding and a custom glass splashback. Tasmanian oak shiplap panels with a grey lime Ƭnish were used as a drawcard to line the back

of the island bench and centre wall panel. The natural material adds texture and dimension to the space and ties in with other areas of the home where it is used to provide design continuity in the newly refurbished room. Another standout feature is the glass splashback. A unique design element, the custom splashback was crafted using an image of the client’s sunken lounge room — a ‘70s design feature if ever there was one! This fun and funky nod to the home’s original architectural aesthetic provides a thoughtful element to the design, while also providing a great talking point when entertaining. HD

STREAMLINED WITH STORAGE

A place for everything and everything in its place

B

oasting a light, fresh and airy ambience, this newly renovated kitchen has been transformed from a dark, drab and outdated space into a fabulous contemporary kitchen while maximising storage and functionality. White melamine cabinets, frosted glass doors, a busy mosaic splashback and stone benchtops were some of the pitfalls of the previous design. The island bench also faced the living area, which was not ideal. The team at Dezign Kitchens created a much more streamlined space that focused on a free-Ʈowing living, dining and entertaining area. The direction of the island bench was changed and the kitchen was opened up to the living zone, doubling its size and functionality.

176

home design

The owners wanted to include a butler’s pantry, but didn’t want to sacriƬce their new 4m-long island bench. Dezign Kitchens came up with the idea of building the pantry into what was previously a void in the old kitchen, providing hidden access through doors that matched the cabinets on the right side of the double integrated fridges. This ingenious idea resulted in the expansion of available storage space and capabilities in the kitchen. The cooktop and sink were both placed on one side of the kitchen to create deƬned work spaces, allowing people to Ʈow freely without interrupting each another. A custom-integrated handle rail keeps design lines clean and modern. As frequent entertainers, incorporating a wine fridge was a must! The space can now

TAKE A DIP A swimming pool makes entertaining a breeze. The kids will love it and you can relax poolside with a long cool drink and catch up on the latest gossip, or join the kids in the water. According to Bree Bensley, national marketing manager of Narellan Pools, if you enjoy getting the gang together at your place,

the best designs for entertaining feature a large splash deck and generous bench seating. “Splash decks are perfect for two reasons: young children have a safe area to play and adults can relax, submerged in the ultimate inwater furniture, a ledge lounger,” she explains. Bree adds that when it comes to creating wow factor, lighting is the secret ingredient. “A lazy afternoon poolside with friends will transform into a striking centrepiece come dusk,” she shares. “Advanced systems oƪer colourchanging lighting — a fun addition to any garden party or event.” When the winter chill is in the air, you can

extend your swim time with a heating option. Remonda Rose, managing director of Blue Haven Pools, says heating is a great feature to maximise your return on investment. Heat pumps and solar heating are popular choices, but Remonda says gas is the winning solution. She adds that heating options can be retroƬtted if you don’t have the budget at the time of installation. “Heating provisions are strategically placed hot water inlets that evenly distribute the heat from the bottom of the pool walls,” she says. As for what’s “hot” right now, Remonda says plunge pools are very popular. If you’re interested in Ƭtness as well as fun, the addition

of a swim jet will allow you to swim laps endlessly. “You have the beneƬts of an Olympic-sized lap pool that Ƭts perfectly into a small modern backyard,” she says. “Innovative winner of the 2020 Swimming Pool & Spa Awards was Blue Haven Pools, which designed an ice bucket poolside — impress your guests with a cold bottle of champagne without leaving the spa!”

SEATING SOLUTIONS Alfresco dining chairs, sofas, occasional chairs, daybeds, bar stools, inbuilt bench seating — no matter what you choose, comfort and durability are important. With quality cosy seating your guests will feel special and you’ll have invested in outdoor furniture that will last. Marco Fanuli from Fanuli Furniture says fabric quality that was once reserved for indoor settings is now being enjoyed outdoors thanks to innovations in textiles. “Featuring sunproof and waterproof properties, these textiles oƪer softness and comfort that was once only found in natural materials,” he says. With new looks in textiles, you can create a stylish space that you and your guests will love. When choosing your outdoor furniture with entertaining in mind, it’s also important that you have enough seating for guests and diƪerent types to accommodate outdoor entertaining activities. “Aim for plenty of seating, with

a mixture of styles appropriate for lounging and also dining,” suggests Marco. “Functional table designs, especially extension tables, also allow for Ʈexibility when hosting large groups.” As for what’s on trend right now, Marco says sofas or lounge chairs that provide generous cushioning and comfort without any of the bulk of traditional outdoor furniture are in demand.

JAZZING IT UP Plush cushions on sofas, textured throws, side and coƪee tables for drinks and snacks all create a welcoming feel in your outdoor entertaining space. A screen can also help to segment entertaining spots and add a striking backdrop to create “rooms” within your outdoor area. Metal screens or timber slatted ones can also work well. And just like adding a signature Ʈourish to your favourite cocktail when entertaining, so too are the Ƭnishing touches to your decor. A focal point or accent piece is what ties it all together. Add some well-placed garden art as a focal point, some bespoke wall art and a sculpture to add a touch of drama. Incorporate strategic garden lighting to highlight focal points and add safety to entry and exit points and stairs around your entertaining spaces. Create a warm ambience with an outdoor Ƭreplace or ethanol Ƭrepit table. They can work beautifully as centrepieces in an outdoor entertaining zone.

GOING GREEN WITH DECOR Creating beautiful outdoor spaces for entertaining is all about setting the scene for comfort, style and relaxation. Brian Fuller, from Leaf Stone Water Design, says to create a beautiful outdoor space, think of plants and pots as the decor items. “There are some great new pot ranges available; you can mix and match to provide beautiful layers of texture, colour, size and shape,” he says. A singular well-chosen pot can be a focal point in the garden with a feature plant, and a trio of pots can add a pop of colour and interest. Potted plants can also be moved to accommodate more guests if you want to reconƬgure a space, or serve as a way to segregate an area to create a fresh new seasonal look. Beautiful textured pots are ontrend right now: curved pots, sculpted planters in neutral tones, cement pots and smart shiny pots are all providing homes for your favourite plants, as well as creating a form of functional art. Brian suggests that when choosing pots, less is more. “Be careful not to clutter,” he advises. “Elegance is in simplicity. Make a statement

with larger (but fewer) pots and architectural plants of diƪerent shades of grey/green plants accessorised with plants that have a lower and relaxing characteristic.” To create a restful entertaining space, add a water feature, be it an urn or fountain, to appeal to the senses. It brings a sense of calm and can diƪuse noise from busy roads or neighbours. If you love to entertain, your guests will also enjoy the opportunity to sit and relax alongside the birds, frogs and butterƮies a water feature will bring into your outdoor spaces.

gatherings. Think outside the box. Be playful. Provide some easy and basic ingredients and let your guests create their own dessert menu, make their own signature pizza, or get hands on with a teppanyaki grill.

FAMILY FUN When it’s a gathering with kids, a daytime backyard picnic could be the order of the day. Think Ƭnger foods, salads, sliced cooked meats, fresh fruits and a zesty punch, with games kids can play outdoors. Tiggy, hide-and-seek, treasure hunts, even having fun on the trampoline in the backyard — as long as there are treats, lots of laughter and room to run, kids are entertained. For more entertaining ideas for get-togethers with your kids and teens, try canvases and paint to create art to take home, a hammock or two hung from trees, and a Ƭrepit for older teens. HD

FEEL THE HEAT WITH HEATSTRIP® Innovative, high-performance electric heating technology for outdoor and indoor areas

T

he HEATSTRIP® collection of electric radiant heaters is perfect for the outdoors and hard-to-heat indoor spaces. As there is typically constant air movement in an outdoor or open indoor area, many conventional heaters rely on convection heating that works by heating the surrounding air. This can be quite impractical, as the heated air can easily blow away with natural air movement. Radiant-style heaters transfer heat directly to objects through infra-red waves. While convection heaters heat the air between objects, radiant heaters heat the surface of the objects themselves. HEATSTRIP® electric radiant heaters

are more eƪective in an outdoor or uninsulated indoor area because they provide targeted warmth directly to the people and objects in their path. Years of research and development, along with a fruitful partnership with the coating technology experts at ThermoƬlm, a world leader in electric heaters, have produced a unique composition to produce the new generation of outdoor heaters. HEATSTRIP® Elegance, with remote and app control (THE-RA Range), is one of the most popular models thanks to its superior technology and unbeatable style. Joining Elegance in the HEATSTRIP® family of products is the Indoor, Classic, Intense and Max

models. Using the radiant heating principle, HEATSTRIP® Max DCR can provide eƪective and energy-eƯcient comfort heating for outdoor (undercover and open) and indoor open areas. HEATSTRIP® has successfully enabled many entertainment venues such as restaurants, pubs and clubs to utilise their outdoor dining areas day and night, through all seasons. In your home, HEATSTRIP® can provide comfort heating for undercover alfresco dining and barbecue areas, patios, verandahs, courtyards and balconies. A LIFESTYLE UPGRADE Modern, functional and easy to maintain, this country garden really does have it all Words Karen Booth Photography Patrick Redmond

O

n the must-have list for this rural property were a luxury swimming pool and inviting outdoor living spaces, all of which had to be created on a site with wonderful views but a tricky slope. The brief given to PTA Landscapes was to integrate the planned pool with the new landscape, make the area around the house, which sat high on the block, useable, and to tame the severe slope through the introduction of well-managed levels and terraces. Of equal importance was ensuring that the new landscape would complement the property’s bucolic surrounds and be as easy to maintain as possible. To harmonise with the natural pink sandstone of the home’s exterior walls, textured nonslip granite paving was laid in the outdoor entertaining areas and around the pool. Granite was also used for the steps that lead from the house level to the mid-terrace level. From this point, a pair of “Ʈoating” native ironbark hardwood stairs oƪer transition to the sunken garden room, at the centre of which is a Ƭrepit. Now one of the family’s favourite places to gather, the Ƭrepit area features a gravel Ʈoor and broad granite-paved steps that can be used as

outdoor living casual seating, as can the timber-topped low gabion wall that sits opposite the steps. Gabion walls have been used throughout the design, adding texture, visual interest and reinforcing the rustic ambience. Each metal gabion basket was carefully stacked with hand-placed granite rocks, one of the many tasks the PTA Landscapes’ team completed with meticulous attention to detail. PTA Landscapes was responsible for a broad scope of works, which included design, construction and engineering, the latter undertaken by the in-house team. The construction work encompassed everything from earthworks, drainage and irrigation to rock work, the placement of stone and gravel pavements, timber screening, and the establishment of garden beds and planting. The plants, chosen for their form and hardiness, include native grasses, cycads (for a strong structural element), star jasmine (for colour and fragrance around the pool), and clusters of bird of paradise around the Ƭrepit zone. They are all irrigated by water harvested directly from the on-site dam. In addition, lighting was installed, which turns the garden into a magical nightscape. This incorporated LED strip lighting under the “Ʈoating” hardwood stairs as well as bollard lighting. PTA Landscapes is a multi-award-winning company. In 2013 alone, it received seven awards at the annual Victorian Landscape Awards, three of which were for this property: Landscape Design up to 150m², Hard Structures in the Landscape categories and a Highly Commended for Residential Landscape over $200,000.
