‘We made a beautiful house even better’

Carrie and Ed Steer have added their own eclectic stamp to an already stunning Victorian villa Words ANNABELLE GRUNDY Photography COLIN POOLE

Living room Featuring walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal and a striking Demetrius wallpaper from Thibaut on the ceiling, it was the leather and velvet sofas from Carrie and Ed’s previous home that helped inspire this room’s rich colour palette and comfortable, club-style vibe

hen Carrie and Ed Steer finally spotted a house they felt could be ‘the one’, the timing could not have been more inconvenient. ‘We were literally on the way to the airport to go on holiday when Ed saw this property online,’ recalls Carrie. ‘When he showed me, I just thought, “Wow, I want to live there!’’ so we called my parents, who stepped in to go and view it for us. They guessed we’d fall in love with it, so on the strength of photos and floor plans, we made an offer.’ Expecting their first child, the couple had been househunting for a comfortable family home with an open-plan layout and roomy garden for some time. ‘We just hadn’t found the right place in Brighton, where we were living at that point, so decided to expand our search,’ says Carrie, who had grown up in this area of Kent, so knew the location. ‘I love Victorian properties for their high ceilings and period

Kitchen The cabinetry, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe, was very much to Carrie’s taste, and Katie of Katie Elizabeth Design suggested adding a second pair of open shelves to balance the kitchen’s existing set. The aquablue Lucia wall lights from Hector Finch and mirror-sided island help boost the light

WINTER HOMES VICTORIAN VILLA

The big idea Fitting shelves in place of wall cabinets makes a room feel, bright, open and inviting. Painting them in the same colour as the walls also allows the pieces on display to really stand out – and in this instance, Carrie’s decorative brackets, too

features, so even without seeing it, my gut instinct was that it was just what we wanted.’ The couple’s intuition was spot on, and the house proved to be ideal in more ways than one. The previous owner had already remodelled and extended to make a large, open-plan kitchen, dining and living area with glass doors opening onto a secluded garden. There was a separate, more formal living room, as well as a generous reception hall and five bedrooms. And not only did it have the sociable, family-friendly layout the couple wanted, but much of the interior décor, such as the classic bathroom scheme and window shutters, was what Carrie and Ed would have chosen themselves. The dark cabinets and marble worktops in the kitchen, for example, were similar to what they’d had in their previous home. ‘There was a palette of cool, pale greys and neutrals throughout, and beautiful lighting, which I was very happy with,’ Carrie says. ‘It was a great mix of old and new, which is definitely my taste, so most of our existing furniture fitted in well, too. Rather than make big changes, I just needed to refresh what was already here.’ Once their first daughter had arrived and the family were settled into the new surroundings, Carrie began to think in more detail about how they would use the house DECEMBER 2021 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 59

WINTER HOMES VICTORIAN VILLA

Design details The kitchen’s classic Aga and multi-toned splashback were already in place, but Carrie had the dark blue Aga re-enamelled. ‘It was looking a bit tired, so I chose a very pale grey, which has really freshened it up’

day-to-day. She decided to revamp the pale-grey living room, and called on the expertise of interior designer Katie Knight, of Katie Elizabeth Design, who had helped to style the couple’s previous home. ‘I knew this would be the room for celebrations, evening entertaining, and special occasions like Christmas Day, so I wanted it to feel glamorous, grownup and a little different from the rest of the house,’ Carrie explains. Katie suggested a dark, dramatic look with deep aubergine walls and a striking monochrome patterned ceiling – the perfect setting for hosting festive celebrations. ‘There’s always a wonderful sense of occasion in this room,’ says Carrie. ‘On Christmas Day, we’ll sit in here to open stockings and presents next to my fabulous Christmas tree. I always take my time dressing it, but there’s no colour or style theme; we have all sorts of decorations hanging on it, from traditional baubles to toys and trinkets – it’s just about having fun.’

Dining area Carrie kept the previous owner’s Flora pendant lights from Rothschild & Bickers, which hang above a Settle oak dining table and weathered leather chairs from Heal’s. Sourced from Vinterior, a vintage metal wall light above a Graham & Green console from makes a decorative feature. ‘It creates some stunning shadows in the evening, so it’s perfect for a dinner party,’ says Carrie

Snug corner The far end of the hallway has been turned into a colourful nook with a pretty 16th-century day bed found at Ardingly Antiques Fair. Carrie and Ed enjoy collecting eyecatching artwork, and they spotted this piece by Dan Baldwin at Art Republic

Hallway For practical storage, Carrie sourced a slimline chest of drawers from Scumble Goosie and added decorative handles from Etsy. The mirror above creates a feeling of space, and the vintage French wall lights either side were inherited with the house

The transformation of this room, however, made Carrie think about the upstairs spaces, which she felt lacked the wow factor of the ground floor. ‘The first floor was missing any impact in comparison,’ she explains. ‘Plus, our bedroom was short on wardrobe space, and it overlooked the road rather than the gorgeous garden, which seemed such a shame.’ To address the issues, Carrie and Ed embarked on a major building project, reconfiguring and enlarging the upper floor at the back of the house to include an extra bedroom and a room for them with a dressing area and en suite. At ground level there would be a practical new utility room too, and style-wise, Carrie let the existing house inspire the feel of the extension, incorporating Victorian proportions, decorative cornicing, soft colours and elegant lighting. ‘It was important that the extension felt like part of the original house, rather

Clementine’s bedroom Carrie took her cue for her eldest daughter’s room, which underwent some re-modelling when the extension was built, from the Cole & Son Flamingos wallpaper, picking out the pink tones with walls painted in Calamine by Farrow & Ball. than an add-on,’ she says. ‘I can be a bit of a design magpie though, and I like lots of different looks, so I had to home in on what would work best in this setting.’ The extension took around a year to plan and another year to complete, but overall the project ran smoothly, with the only issue being the choice of windows. ‘The architect had picked a modern style that just wasn’t in keeping with the house, but I only noticed at the last minute,’ Carrie recalls. ‘We had to make a quick change and amend the planning permission, which was a hassle, but worth it for the right outcome.’ The light-filled main bedroom has become one of Carrie’s favourite spots, with its palette of soft greens, pinks and neutrals reflecting the garden view and creating a restful atmosphere, while the scale and feel of the room help it to blend seamlessly with the existing period structure. ‘It was a challenge to move into a house that was already looking pretty good, as I didn’t want to spoil anything, but I still wanted us to make our own mark here,’ she explains. ‘There are things I love in every part of this house, like the bright, open-plan kitchen and garden in summer. In winter, though, our warm and cosy living room is just the ideal place for all the holiday celebrations.’

here’s nothing more comforting in the colder months than enjoying a night in by the fire. But if you don’t want the cost and building work involved with installing a wood burner, or perhaps don’t require the same heating needs, an electric fireplace makes both a great alternative and a head-turning centrepiece. If you love the statement wall trend currently storming social media, a Gazco inset electric fire makes the ideal companion to a contemporary scheme. The eStudio electric range, from £845, is designed with a slimmer depth, making these fires particularly ideal for rooms where floor space is limited, such as in new-build homes. Available in various sizes, this fire is also suitable for installation beneath a TV.

Should you want to recreate a more traditional aesthetic, a freestanding electric stove works perfectly. Offering the same visual presence as a log burner, these models rival the real thing with realistic fuel effects and flames, but are all operable from the comfort of your favourite chair. Stove designs like the Gazco Chesterfield 5 electric, from £1,195, are designed with the same attention to detail and authenticity, even down to the elegant bevelling on the front of the stove. One of the biggest benefits of an electric stove or fire is the ability to enjoy a fireside glow all year round – with or without the warmth. Need a cosy setting on a late summer’s evening? Just switch off the heat. Alternatively, enjoy both heat and ambience during winter, and create a truly festive focal point.

diana and Kevin Dolan were delighted when they found a house within walking distance of the local school, with a good-sized, south-facing garden and a bright and sunny aspect, which also met their budget when looking to buy their first home. ‘It was a former rental property and luckily didn’t need any structural work doing to it,’ recalls Ediana. ‘The décor was a bit of a time warp though; it was a sea of magnolia and pine, so we knew it would need a complete revamp.’ Having only rented houses before, Ediana had previously been limited in what she could do when it came to interior design, so buying their first home meant she could, at last, let her creative

juices flow and fully utilise Kevin’s practical skills. ‘When we moved in, we basically just painted the walls, ceilings and woodwork white to give us a blank canvas on which to build, and changed all the light fittings, sockets and switches,’ she says. Ediana then began to find her style, getting braver with colour and pattern to complement the spaces and start adding character to each room. With not having a huge budget to work with, the couple looked at clever ways in which to stretch their funds, which included painting the existing kitchen cabinets dark grey, spraying the handles in a copper shade, and updating the splashbacks with tile paint. ‘To finish it off, we fitted a new tap, oven and hob, and to make the space more functional and to give us that extra bit of workspace, we added an island unit with a breakfast bar that we found in Ikea,’ Ediana explains. With her confidence growing, she wanted to introduce some pattern into the dining area, using a striking wallpaper

As the space opens up onto the garden so is always lovely and bright, Ediana knew that she could go for a dark and dramatic scheme without the room feeling too gloomy. ‘Kevin made the table out of planks of wood from a local hardware store, which we stained and varnished to look like walnut and fitted legs from Ikea,’ she says. ‘The chairs are from an antique warehouse and we picked up the drinks cabinet in a charity shop.’ For the finishing touches, Ediana hung prints in frames that she sprayed black and added a black and white geometric rug from Littlewoods.

It’s this theatrical dining room scheme that really comes into its own at Christmas, and Ediana uses a mix of fresh and faux foliage to add a festive feel to the room. ‘I look in magazines and on Pinterest and Instagram for ideas and inspiration,’ she says. ‘The large stars from Ikea are my staple decorations and work well with the paper balls from Søstrene Grene.’ In contrast, the living room is a fun and colourful space that the whole family enjoy, with a comfy Ikea sofa and bright armchair, lots of practical storage and space for the Christmas tree, which has pride of place in the window at the front of the house. ‘To frame the DECEMBER 2021 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 77

It’s a great space to dress for the festivities, and I opted for a neutral sofa so I could add pops of colour with my accessories.’ Upstairs, new carpet was laid on the landing, but the wooden floors in the other rooms, which had previously been stained and varnished, had developed a deep yellow hue that Ediana disliked. So to give them a fresh new look she painted them, and the stairs, with a white floor paint, adding contrast by painting the risers in a deep grey. The white theme continues into the couple’s bedroom for a calm, relaxing scheme. ‘I wanted to introduce some pattern and texture, so used soft pink and grey tones for the soft furnishings.’

Caoimhe’s bedroom The couple’s daughter Caoimhe picked out the pink shade, Fleetwood’s Morning Blush, for the mountain motif on her walls, and the stickers are by Lamb Design. ‘We found the wigwam on Etsy, and the beds in both rooms are from Ikea,’ says Ediana

Encouraging her children to have an input into the design of their own bedrooms, Ediana helped them pick their themes and colours – and Oisin’s love of Batman and Lego is clearly evident in his room. ‘We then painted mountains on the walls in Caoimhe’s room,’ says Ediana. ‘I enlisted Kevin’s help as I’m not great at drawing straight lines! We simply cut mountain outlines out of paper, a bit like a stencil, and taped them to the walls around the room, repeating the pattern for a cohesive look.’ 80 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM DECEMBER 2021

The couple are pleased with how the house has come together. ‘We love it – it’s fun and cosy, and there’s something of interest in every room,’ explains Ediana, who admits she’s not quite finished yet. ‘I’m renovating the bathroom and planning a hall makeover that includes painted panelling,’ she says. ‘We also have a loft conversion up our sleeve, and are thinking of changing the downstairs flooring... But these are big jobs and will take a while to happen – this house is definitely a work in progress.’

is the season for cosy décor, home comforts, and cranking the heating up, but we rarely show our appreciation for our radiators' hard work in keeping our homes toasty over Christmas, and throughout the year. So is it about time you gave yours a style makeover? BestHeating.com has an extensive range of timeless, contemporary and colourful radiators – and replacing yours can be an easier job than you think. The first task is to ensure your new radiator will provide enough heat for your room, and an online BTU calculator will work out the total heat requirement.

When choosing a panel design and finish, the colder weather invites us to bring more warming hues into our home. So whether your style is modern or classic, metallic finishes like antique brass and burnt gold or earthier tones like ruby red or sage green offer a festive gesture that looks beautiful whatever the season. If your new radiator is the same size, and you feel confident draining and removing the original, this could be a project you complete yourself. However, if pipework needs moving, or multiple radiators installed, seek the help of a plumber to complete your new look.

The property, a traditional-style stucco-finish house built in the 1960s, was well maintained and had great bones, with all its original finishes intact. ‘It was charming, and reminded me of the home I grew up in,’ explains Dharshini. ‘But it had blue carpets in the living and dining rooms, a mint green bathroom suite and linoleum tiles in the kitchen, so needed to be brought into the 21st century.’ Dharshini and Krish had a vision that required a large renovation project, including taking the house right down to the frame, adding a two-story extension to the rear and replacing all the electrics, windows and finishes. ‘Stonshore Homes oversaw the project, and at the start the builder Peter Marit said to me that the next year would be a marriage – there would be joys and challenges – but no matter the phase, we would work through it!’ says

Integrating the old and new structures in a way that felt intentional was a big challenge, however. ‘The floors in the older part of the house were not level, so we had to spend time levelling the subfloor so that they merged seamlessly with the new flooring,’ she says. With the renovations complete, the interiors decisions loomed. ‘When we first moved into the house, our boys were just a year and a half and four months old, and we had

By contrast, the en suite is the only space to celebrate pattern, with a deep chocolate and cream palette adding to the feel of a grown-up sanctuary to relax in style. The children’s rooms are filled with joy especially at this time of year, and a hanging chair simply adorned with a twisted garland is the perfect spot for story time. ‘A new tradition we have embraced is wearing Christmas pyjamas and having a library of wonderful festive stories for the kids to choose from at bedtime leading up to the big day,’ says Dharshini. ‘It is a small change to the evening rituals where we can share the meaning of Christmas.’

Update your window furnishings this winter with these simple steps to snug, stylish spaces ELEGANT CHOICE Choose light control and contemporary style with a Roman blind, from £11.90 with free thermal and blackout linings

T

he colder months may be upon us, but there are some easy ways to keep your home comfy and warm with your window furnishings this Christmas – and Blinds Direct is here to show you how. Research suggests that 35% of heat escapes through a building’s walls, and gaps in and around windows and doors. The outcome is wasted money, environmental damage and a chilly home, so one of the best ways to overcome this is with a thermal-lined Roman blind. Crafted from multiple layers of material to improve thermal resistance, these blinds maintain a room’s warmth in a similar way to a winter coat. By creating dead-air space between you and the cold, rooms retain their heat, keeping you cosy while your windows look fabulous with the latest fabrics and prints. When it comes to protecting against the elements, most of us know how to layer our outfits, but what about our windows? With most window furnishings, you have the option to fit it inside or outside of the window recess – but what about both? One of the best ways to layer your windows is by placing an elegant wooden Venetian blind within the window recess, and a luxurious, thermal-lined curtain outside of it. This way you can enjoy filtered light during the warmer, brighter parts of a winter’s day, and double up the cosiness at night when the temperature drops. Looking to revamp your rooms with a made-to-measure window furnishing in time for Christmas? With the festive period one of the busiest times of the year, demand is higher, so it’s important to act swiftly. With this is mind, Blinds Direct has made things easier by adding red bows to the products where pre-Christmas despatch is available. Simply head online to dial up the cosy factor this season.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW-BUILD PROJECT It is something we dreamed of doing for years, and we wanted to include a bright, airy, clutter-free kitchen with lots of storage space – I always loved the idea of a scheme where family and friends can all gather around a central island. The rest of the house was pretty much designed around it. The garage, for example, is right next to the kitchen; so we can drive the car in, kick off our shoes in the boot room, and walk straight into the heart of the home from there.

HOW DID THE DESIGN EVOLVE AT THE PLANNING STAGE? Having plenty of natural light was important to us, so we incorporated three large Velux rooflights in a vaulted ceiling. We knew we’d be spending a lot of time in here, so we also invested in bi-fold doors that open out onto the garden to capture the countryside views. WHAT WAS THE STARTING POINT OF THE KITCHEN SCHEME? Most definitely the island. This was going

WINE FRIDGES to be used morning, noon and night, so it had to work for me – and, as a kitchen designer, I really didn’t want to make any mistakes. This is where we come together as a family to eat and catch up, as well as a place where I can hang out with my friends over coffee or a glass of wine. I designed the seating on two sides rather than as a straight run to make it more sociable, and had the wine cooler installed at the front to face into the rest of the room, as it gives off a nice ambient light in the evening. Small touches can make a big difference. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE CABINETRY? We have this Hunton kitchen design by Second Nature on display

in our studio and I love it, so it was an easy choice to have it in my home. It’s a strong, true blue in the day and a dark, moody midnight shade in the evening. I would say that my style is traditional and practical but with a modern twist, and the design’s Shaker doors and matt finish, teamed with antique-finish door furniture and hinges, were perfect. L

ooking for the tap that does it all this winter? This month, Good Homes has teamed up with boiling-water tap specialist Quooker to offer readers the chance to be the lucky winner of a Quooker Flex in a finish of your choice. Invented in 1970, Henri Peteri’s innovative boilingwater tap concept leads the way in technology and design, growing into a kitchen essential for millions of households worldwide – and the Quooker Flex offers both form and function. Equipped with a flexible pull-out hose for hot, cold and filtered water, the Flex makes it easy to rinse the sink and reach any awkward kitchen objects. And thanks to its in-built safety stop, the Flex can never dispense boiling water when the hose is extended, protecting the user at all times. What’s more, thanks to state-of-the-art technology, it takes just 10 watts of energy to keep the water in a Quooker tap’s tank at 110°C, meaning it uses very little electricity, saving you money on bills. Water only starts to boil when the tap is turned on and the temperature of the outflowing water drops to 100°C. Fresh water then immediately flows into the tank to replace the exact amount extracted ready for the next use. With unparalleled functionality, intuitive and seamless water mode transitions and in-built safety mechanisms, Quooker delivers the tap that does it all. So for your chance to win a Quooker Flex plus installation, see below to enter. For more information on the range, visit quooker.co.uk. Good luck!

MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE Rylan chose the clean, contemporary lines and handless units of Wren’s Milano Elements range, which is in keeping with the concrete-look aesthetic he wanted to achieve in his industrial-style home

‘I really wanted a showstopper island for this space’ When presenter Rylan Clark-Neal designed his ultra-modern home in Essex, he put the kitchen right at its heart with the help of Wren

T

he most important room in the house for Rylan Clark-Neal is his kitchen. It’s the first room he goes into in the morning, where he cooks and entertains, and where music is played, parties are held and karaoke is sung. But as much as fun is a key element in Rylan’s life, he also takes design very seriously, and his beautiful Essex home is centred around his stunning kitchen, which itself is built around one key element. ‘I’d recently built a house and I really wanted a showstopper island in the kitchen,’ he explains. ‘I went through quite a lot of websites in my search before coming across a striking angular marble design that really caught my eye.’ And once the decision was made to use Wren Kitchens’ Stealth island as the focal point of the room, Rylan worked with one of Wren’s designers to complete his vision. ‘I sat down with a lovely lady called Michelle and went through all the designs,’ he explains. ‘To actually be in the showroom and physically see, touch and envision what it’s going to look like in your house is great.’ The kitchen they designed together was from the Milano Elements range, its sharp

modern lines and handleless units perfectly complementing the ultra-modern overall feel of the house. ‘I really wanted a concrete look to my kitchen as my house is quite industrial,’ says Rylan. ‘There’s a lot of stainless steel, grey and silver, and concrete-look floors, so the Milano Elements range was exactly what I wanted.’ Rylan describes the design process as an enjoyable experience and talks fondly about the excitement of watching it all come together. ‘One of the best things was when my family came to visit the building site that was my house at the time,’ he says. ‘I had the virtual reality version of my kitchen on my phone, so when they asked me what it was going to look like, I could show them.’ As Rylan is a keen amateur chef, the kitchen needed to be practical as well as aesthetically pleasing. ‘I chose Neff appliances, which I absolutely love, including the Slide & Hide oven,’ he explains. ‘I also went for the Miele dishwasher, but my coffee machine is the one thing I genuinely couldn’t live without!’ So what would Rylan’s top tip for anyone looking to buy a kitchen be? ‘Don’t sit indoors online trawling through different sites – go out and see it,’ he says. ‘Visit the showroom and get a feel for everything. You can see the work surfaces, decide on the finishes you want, touch the island and have a play with the appliances. For me, it was like being in a kids’ playground, but for adults!’

It had old vinyl flooring and the bath panel was falling off. A bidet was also taking up too much space and all the fixtures were crowded together. DID YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC IDEAS FOR THE NEW DESIGN? We really wanted space for both a luxury

walk-in shower and a freestanding bath, and knew we could achieve this by knocking through to the landing airing cupboard, which gave us the extra room we needed. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED? Well we had no shower for six weeks in the middle of the pandemic! bath finally arrived, it was too wide to fit through the bathroom door, which turned out to be the narrowest of all the internal doors in the house! So the door frame had to be removed to fit it in. HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR BUDGET WORK FOR YOU? I shopped around online and looked for inspiration on @houselust on Instagram, where I picked up a tile discount. Our bathroom supplier recommended Flova for brassware, as a cheaper but highly reputable alternative to some of the pricier brands, so we made a saving there, too. ART DECO FEEL Emerald green scallop tiles with ivory grouting, brass taps and circular mirrors lend a 1920s vibe to the new bathroom

WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY? I’ve never tackled a bathroom or kitchen renovation before, and we learnt so much doing this project. Initially, we weren’t going to put tiles behind the bath, but then I thought about the children splashing around in it, and I’m so glad we did. I deliberately chose large tiles for around the bath and shower, because the larger the tile, the less grout cleaning is required! I also chose herringbone tiles for the floor, as patterns help to disguise dirt. We didn’t have space for a shower tray, but next time I might opt for one, for easier maintenance.

SIDE-RETURN ADDITION

GROWING TOGETHER

Laura Turner and Leon Smith have remodelled their Victorian terraced house with an L-shaped extension

Feature DEBBIE JEFFERY Photography LIANE RYAN Project PLUS ROOMS

Q

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS HOUSE? When the children were born, we had planned to extend our previous two-bedroom house in East Dulwich, but after getting planning permission, we realised the costs just weren’t worthwhile. We began looking for a larger home in the same area and found this four-bedroom property. It needed a huge amount of work, including rewiring, replastering, new heating and floors, but we could see that extending into the garden and the side return could create the open-plan kitchen-diner we needed as a family.

Q

HOW DID YOU TACKLE THE PROJECT? We both work full time and didn’t have time to organise a large-scale building project by ourselves, especially during lockdown in 2020. Instead, we approached Plus Rooms, who took on everything, from design and planning to the build and decorative finishes. They

made a small, temporary kitchen in the playroom and, although there was a lot of dust, we coped well with living on site. Walls were knocked down, and the L-shaped extension was built using reclaimed London stock bricks to tie in with the main house. The project came in both on time and budget, with zero stress.

Q

HAVE YOU ACHIEVED YOUR AIM? The old kitchen was grotty, with just one side window facing a wall, a utility area looking onto the garden at the rear, with an old toilet and ramshackle shed. Demolishing the shed and squaring off the space with the new extension now connects the kitchen to the new patio. Both are finished in the same floor tiles, so when the bi-fold doors are open it makes the garden feel like another room, and the children love being able to run in and out. It works for us – and we now feel proud enough of our kitchen to entertain and invite people over.

NEED-TO-KNOW: BRICKWORK USE INSIDE AND OUT Exposed brickwork can add instant character to a home of any age. There are thousands of different bricks on the market to suit all budgets and tastes, so make sure you choose the correct category for your project. Your brick supplier should be able to advise.
