‘ The bath is acrylic, which made getting it up the stairs so much easier. We put it on the platform as a good-looking way to house the pipework’

‘I use the bath all the time. It’s definitely not just for show’

‘I absolutely love piling up the bed with lots of pillows and cushions as it’s a really easy way to create a feeling of complete luxury, and they also add colour and texture to the monochrome scheme’

MY EXPERIENCE

It was this top room that sold this place to us. The house is three storeys high, so I thought the boys could have the middle floor and we could have our own sanctuary up here.

We’d been to a hotel with a bath in the alcove and I knew I wanted one in here. Chris’ s stepdad built the frame to house it, which saved on our budget and then a plumber installed the pipework. I looked at using ceramic tiles but was wary of the weight on the frame and when I saw these vinyl tiles I thought they’d be simpler to use and that Chris could fit them.

It’s a long, thin room so we wanted something to catch the eye, which is why we decided on the wall panelling. Chris took it on as a project, though the design took time as drawing it out and calculating how much space we wanted between each panel was tricky. We went to B&Q, who cut all the MDF for us, and Chris glued it to the wall. Even in new-builds the walls aren’t completely flat, so he secured it with panel pins. I was thinking of painting it black but worried about the light, so I chose this dark grey as a compromise.

I set up the chairs and bar area in the corner, as I thought it would be nice to add to the hotel vibe I wanted. It really has become the sanctuary I hoped for.
