PUBLISHER’S NOTE
The Meaning of Art Our homes are our havens – the safe sanctuary where we retreat to enjoy the ultimate pleasures in life. In these troubling times, more than ever, the home is essential to our well-being. Personalising one’s space is always a priority, but we have observed an obvious shift in design aesthetic recently to a preference for calmer, cleaner spaces. Where less is more and the most inspirational of abodes give its inhabitants the ability to reconnect with life’s simple pleasures, refresh and regenerate. I can’t think of a better example than the beautifully crafted homes of Koa Niseko (shot exclusively for this month’s cover story on Pg 58) to better encapsulate this. Conceived by Jason Kuok, the founder and managing director of Supernova Land, together with his partners and close friends, Jason Cheung, Justin Potter and Joseph Luk, an exclusive collection of villas and semi-detached townhouses in Higashiyama place the focus on slow living and cosy contentment. From a design perspective, they are bliss – architectural uniformity, light hues and luxurious natural materials blend seamlessly with curated furnishings and custom made pieces for the perfect abode to savour with loved ones. Those of you hunting for a second home or seeking long stay options in Niseko need look no further. On the topic of property investment, we’ve launched our all new real estate guide (Pg 120) to introduce the most enticing homes in Asia and around the world. March is traditionally known as art month and this issue also explores how we incorporate art and all its forms into the way we live, the way we decorate our homes and how art makes us feel (Pg 108). Check out the fairs to look out for and more on homejournal.com and please send me your tips and comments to emily.leung@homejournal.com. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events for Home Journal and the Asia Designers Community in the next few months. The development of the Hong Kong art world is rapid, and many famous galleries and international exhibitions have selected this city as one of their bases. The local education community is also committed to fostering a new generation of artists through a variety of channels and academic exchanges. Here, three individuals from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Hong Kong share their creative ideas on promoting the development of local art: Stephen Thorpe, a professor of painting; alumna Blessy Man, and Abby McKenzie, a representative of SCAD Art Sales. “SCAD’s painting course is a combination of theoretical teaching and studio experience, allowing students to directly apply concepts and theories to works,” explains Stephen. In addition to classroom teaching, he also takes students to art galleries, museums and artist talks, all of which lead the younger generation to draw on artistic knowledge from multiple perspectives. Furthermore, Stephen actively connects students with industry professionals through the university’s strong network to provide more opportunities for their future development. “Students are the factor that makes me enjoy teaching in SCAD,” he says. “Their high level of participation in the classroom has given me great encouragement. The international, multicultural exchange of ideas on the university campus has also created a rich and unique learning environment for teachers and students.” Blessy, who has studied at the SCAD campuses in both Hong Kong and Savannah (in the US state of Georgia), is a Hong Kongbased multidisciplinary artist. This outstanding graduate of SCAD’s painting department received her BFA degree in 2015. She embarked on her remarkable artistic journey, and her extraordinary works have been published in magazines and an art book from the CICA Museum. She encourages art students to maintain a positive learning attitude, read more and participate in art exhibitions, maintain their curiosity and keep improving. In addition to its well-known art programme, SCAD Art Sales is committed to promoting the work of local artists in Hong Kong and helping the development of local art and culture. Abby explains: “We work closely with students, alumni and faculty to create in a variety of media and crafts, with more than 45,000 artists and designers, including painting, sculpture, furniture and interior design, film and video art.” SCAD Art Sales in Hong Kong strives to promote the work of SCAD artists. Its team of experts provides comprehensive guidance to clients and collectors, including consulting and development, selection and acquisition, framing and presentation, and delivery and installation. “The biggest difference between us and other art sales channels is that SCAD Art Sales is keen to cooperate with emerging and well-known international artists to meet the needs of customers with diverse works and different prices, including private art collectors, fashion brands, interior designers and international corporations,” adds Abby. “For private art collectors, the biggest attraction of working with us is to be able to sponsor and support the careers of young artists while collecting unique and valuable artworks.” SCAD Art Sales will host an open studio event in May, featuring a variety of works by students, alumni and faculty. Abby anticipates that by showing diverse works of art, everyone can purchase the artwork in order to have a better understanding of the themes and aesthetics that the next generation of artists are exploring. //

The expression “Made in Italy” has long been associated with authentic aesthetics, exceptional quality and unmatchable style. In the world of design, the likes of Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanuso, Gio Ponti and Dimore Studio have been just a few who have showcased their unique takes on products, interiors and architecture. When Ippolita Rostagno launched Artemest – an online marketplace for handmade decor, furniture and lighting – with Marco Credendino in 2015, they aimed to promote the delicate beauty and cultural wisdom of Italian craftsmanship. We speak to Ippolita as she sheds light on the birth of her labour of love and the essence of Italian creation. ෮ɣСႇ ȹീॖԞၤࡈነdԿ൙ۂሔ ಲၤ࠷ˈࣟࠓؿ၇டᖎcEttore SottsassdMarco ZanusoԷGio PontiDimore Studioc෮ਝؿ෮Ɉ൴Ε

“Made in Italy” is a phrase that carries a wealth of history all over the world. Italian artisans are known to have traditions that go back centuries and even more than a thousand years. The knowledge and appreciation of artistic tradition, as well as the love of quality and exacting craftsmanship, has allowed the phrase to retain its meaning over time. Even so, Italian designers actively move into the modern era with clean lines and style that comes with great depth and substance of history.

I have always appreciated handcrafted functional and decorative objects. Being able to bring together Italian craftsmanship and taste became a passion as early as high school, where I studied sculpture and ceramics. After my daughter was born, I decided to go into business for myself. I don’t think there was a moment of revelation, but like the rhythm of craft itself, there was the realisation that a life dedicated to art was a path worth pursuing, and it revealed itself over time. ҈ȹ 01

Artemest was born from my desire to save Italian craftsmanship from extinction. Every year, thousands of workshops and artisan companies were closing, and I felt that it would be a huge loss to the world if they weren’t allowed to continue. So I toured the country and recruited as many wonderful artisans as I could. With Artemest, I hope to offer a window into the myriad different, wonderful products and techniques straight from Italy.
When I design jewellery, I keep in mind the modern woman, much like myself, who thinks for herself and considers jewellery to be an extension of herself. My advice for aspiring creatives is that no matter how broad your reach can be, your vision has to be extremely singular and unique, and that the value is in the absolute aesthetic that an artist or an artisan can create. It’s also important to know that you can’t do it alone. You need a team of talented people, including yourself, the designer, a creative art director and a business/e-commerce expert. Your success will depend on the quality and cohesion of this team. ҈ྦྷτؿ߲ג

Creative designs and playfulness permeate everything that Francfranc produces. For its Vivid Latin Resort collection, the funloving Japanese brand takes inspiration from the Mediterranean coast and luxury resorts of Procida Island in southern Italy. This sunny sensibility radiates from the convivial LOTUS personal chair, which offers comfort whether used outdoors or inside, the attractive PIONNIER sofa, and lively fabrics, from patterned cushion covers to floral adorned bedding sets, and colourful rugs. Handpainted terracotta BIBIANA flower vases, GRETTA rope baskets and ART FLOWERS introduce texture, while the VIVACE Series, replete with painterly flowers, PLAGO place mats and vibrant ROVENTE glassware make table settings picturesque. The fresh scent of Procida Island – green leaves, musk, bergamot and ginger – is captured in the RINASCIMENTO room fragrance diffuser. As it releases its pleasing aroma, slip on a VIVID FLOWER one-piece and luxurious VIVID EMBROIDERY room shoes to feel fashionably relaxed and on holiday at home.

Inspired by Archi-Depot, an architectural model museum in a Tokyo warehouse, Yu Ting, the chief architect of Wutopia Lab, was determined to build a mega-model of a future city. “The museum focuses on models of various built or unbuilt projects; if we look at these vastly different projects from a macro perspective, and ignore the difference in region and time period, they can form a world together,” he explains. By displaying selected models in miniature size at different levels, each represents a divergent prediction of a future urban environment that encourages growing and expanding with its vertical scale. SWISS BY DESIGN V-ZUG APPLIANCES ARE SHAPED BY USER-CENTRIC DESIGNS IDEAL FOR MODERN LIVING
This page: The handcrafted RefreshButler; opposite page clockwise from left: Glass ceramic FullFlex hob; World-first Combi-Steam MSLQ; V-ZUG headquarters in Zug, Switzerland; the V-ZUG design team
Design permeates every aspect of our life, from the clothes we wear to the myriad of products we bring into our home, such as the appliances we rely on every day. These necessities need to look good and perform well – how successfully they do this comes down to the vision of the design team behind them. “We always design our products starting with the idea of making everyday life easier for users, exciting and inspiring them,” says Julia Borger, User Experience Designer for Swiss brand, V-ZUG. Located in Zug, Switzerland, V-ZUG has been developing and manufacturing innovative household appliances since 1913, and has established a global presence and a recognised identity that is known for fascinating designs and highperformance, easy-to-use products. “Users should have to do as little as possible when it comes to appliance inputs. In the best case it involves natural movements and intuitive procedures that enable an input,” says User Experience Designer, Gloria Cultura. This approach was employed on the award-winning, zoneless FullFlex hob, which detects where you place cookware and adjusts itself automatically, and has a professional mode that regulates the power level when you push a pan to the back. This is convenient cooking at the highest level.
“Design is the art of combining functionality with aesthetics and thus creating a positive user experience.” To achieve this, V-ZUG is dedicated to introducing evermore innovations into its products. For example, the world-unique vibration absorbing system in V-ZUG washing machines, which makes them exceedingly quiet – and a popular choice with consumers – and the Combi-Steam MSLQ, a world-first in combining heat, steam and microwave in one appliance. Exemplary Swiss design and high-quality materials also feature in the RefreshButler, a luxury fabric care system that cleans delicate fabrics to professional levels at home. Each free-standing piece is handmade in Switzerland and can be integrated into an existing cupboard system. RefreshButler combines three practical functions in one appliance: a refresh function that neutralises odours; hygiene function to ensure that bacteria and germs are almost completely eliminated; and a drying function that dries wet fabrics in a gentle and energy-saving manner thanks to the heat pump. Every aspect of a V-ZUG appliance is carefully considered. As Borger notes, “Our appliances stand for quality and durability, so the design has to last and remain appealing for a long period of time.”

HOMES | MELBOURNE HAPPY VALLEY
To envision a sanctuary for her and her family, Janine Allis, the founder of popular Australian juice and smoothie brand Boost Juice, hired interior architecture and design studio In Design International (IDI) to create a quiet, luxurious three-storey, 1,560-square-foot home in suburban Melbourne. Janine is a healthy lifestyle advocate who enjoys surfing, horseback riding, tennis and yoga, while Penny Del Castillo, IDI’s founder and director, has a great deal of experience with bespoke spa and wellness projects. This client-designer relationship was a match made in heaven, so it was no surprise that the two came up with the concept of a salubrious and relaxing oasis for Janine’s home. ዌكݘΊۂםಶBoost Juice ؿፒɁJanine AllisࡼɁ จԷȹҡใᙀഒሬ්ࡼؿcܰכկপᆉ۩ʑۺዾʥஉ߮ɮА۩In Design International (IDI)Εቮဍ̨̯ࠁٶȹᄝ1,560̡ʿаؿ3ᄙ ֈֺcѧɮيݠ́ؿ܃ංౙೕˮГሁႚജݢࣩؿe Janineֆ৪́ݠc௩ෲᇰ࣯dᕉd̨၉ଈЈhIDIؿ ፒɁ࠹߲ஐɁPenny Del Castilloڬኟτ̨ɣˋێᏻʥ৪ɮೡඖ ͌ؿᔔఒeԭϽ˿႓ܰȹЩcɺࣱΛɔͳڏ࿚܆ˮȹ৪ ᜑɁיᕌؿஉ߮ล֨e

For decades, downtown LA was rather grim, with a smattering of skyscrapers and abandoned buildings that had little appeal. But in 2008, the “Bringing Back Broadway” initiative was launched as a 10-year plan to revitalise the historic Broadway corridor’s grand heritage of art deco, Beaux-Arts and Spanish baroque buildings. Further kick-starting the renaissance was the arrival of the Broad contemporary art museum in 2015, adjacent to the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. That, along with improved public transport – fuelled in part by the forthcoming 2028 Summer Olympics – has revolutionised the downtown district. In 2019, the international contemporary art fair Frieze, its provocative sister show Felix and stARTup were added to the mix of LA’s impressive line-up of annual art fairs, including the LA Art Show, the LA Art Fair and Art Contemporary Los Angeles. Frieze’s inaugural show in the city went all-out in 2019, taking over and EQOOKUUKQPKPI CTVYQTMU HQT VJG Ƃ XG CETG 0GY ;QTM UVTGGVUECRG UGV QP VJG 2CTCOQWPV Studios backlot. Renowned French artist Henri Matisse once said, “Art should be something like a good armchair in which to rest from physical fatigue.” In the same vein, a living space’s ambience is uplifted when it’s imbued with the right piece of art. When the exact right amount of artistic touch is deployed, the rest of the interiors and decorative schemes fall into place. Moreover, it helps mirror the homeowner’s character and narrates a unique story for a space. Art is also seen as a solid long-term investment – one that offers enjoyment as you build your collection. Nonetheless, a lot of us have gone through the painful process of art-meets-decor questions, such as: “How do I choose the right artwork for my space?” “Where should I hang this painting?” “Do I have to change the wall colour to go with the new piece?” In this feature, we’ll learn how to curate harmonious art displays from the pros.

While we’re sometimes troubled by all of the aforementioned considerations, Lo Eli, principal designer and co-founder of Hong Kong-based multidisciplinary studio S.Lo, thinks that the creative process should begin with a series of questions. “Consider the artwork’s content,” she says. “Does it feel more appropriate in the bedroom or the dining room? What story does it tell you or say about you?” Julliana Choi, director of contemporary art gallery Over The +Pƃ WGPEG *QPI -QPI CFXKUGU p5VCTV YKVJ VJG YQTM [QW NQXG You will be living with the artworks day in and day out, so make sure you create something that makes you happy.“ Art collector and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac’s Asia director, Nick Buckley Wood, expresses a similar opinion. For his own Mid-Levels home, one of the pieces he selected was a Nobuyoshi Araki photograph of a geisha eating a watermelon: “It’s carnal and gritty – perfect for the dining room.” When interior designer Alice Keswick helmed Nick’s residential project, she felt it was essential to start with a tranquil foundation highlighted by luxurious textures and materials to complement the works of art. She shares, “We focused on a clean colour palette, with hints of Asian KPƃ WGPEGU CPF CP QXGTCNN GUUGPEG QH VTCFKVKQPCN $TKVKUJ UV[NG in keeping with its heritage.” Nick adds, “My only request was that the art would not be overpowered by the interiors.” In harmony with this minimalist design approach, interior designer Peggy Bels also adopted a straightforward aesthetic when she curated an avid art-collecting couple’s Hong Kong residence. She explains, “It was important to go lighter on the interior design and appointments, as the couple possesses a strong collection of art pieces, so we came to an agreement to stick with a blue-and-white theme.” Danish home decor and furniture brand Bloomingville's chief stylist Sanne Korsholm further elaborates, “Sustainability plays an important role as toned down blues, nudes, dusty and burnt colours are introduced. Natural materials and rustic sculptural shapes will continue to embellish our home.“

Instead of storing your cherished collectible pieces in the safe or storeroom, take note from fashion maven turned art-agency founder Marleen Molenaar, as she regularly rotates out the artworks in her Mid-Levels home to ensure that every piece gets its chance in the spotlight. If you want to add an extra layer of texture to the stage of your art, consider concrete, like Hong KongDCUGF CTVKUV 5KOQP $KTEJ FKF YJGP JG EQXGTGF VJG ƃQQTKPI QH JKU %GPVTCN CDQFG CPF ICNNGT[ YKVJ VJG tactile material for an extra dose of impact. First of all, make sure your illumination is adjustable. From there, you may adopt scallop lighting to shine light from above, which works well in a row. Or, utilise two or more spots to cross-direct light at one artwork; this will greatly reduce shadows, and put your gallery wall or sculptures centre-stage.” Last but not least, Lo shares one heartfelt golden rule of selecting art for your home: “Enjoy the RTQEGUU QH EJQQUKPI 9JGP [QW HCNN KP NQXG YKVJ UQOGVJKPI LWUV DW[ KV +V YKNN NQXG [QW DCEM QPEG KVoU in your home. OAKRIDGE x CLÉMANDE ARTISANAL ABODES IN THE HEART OF VANCOUVER’S NEWEST CULTURAL HUB
LOCATION: OAKRIDGE, VANCOUVER RESIDENCES
Prominent Canadian residential developer Westbank unveils what’s claimed to be Vancouver’s largest cultural hub – Oakridge, a monumental mosaic of residential space, retail experiences, public art, culinary delights and a large multi-level public park. At the heart is Oakridge x Clémande, a stunning 17-storey residential complex with homes fully furnished with pieces curated by Parisian designer Clémande Burgevin Blachman, who had a hand in selecting the finest details of each residence – down to each Taschen book in the library, the robes in the bathroom, the utensils in the kitchen and the furnishings in the lobby. Expected to be completed in 2024, its four residence types include studios, one- and two-bedrooms, and penthouses, with Clémande’s refined aesthetic and French savoir-faire pervading the interiors, from the distinctive minimalist neutral palette to the carefully interwoven brass and the colourful details. These are accompanied by art-deco style lighting fixtures, open kitchens by Stelton, kitchenware by Le Creuset, heirloom china by Royal Copenhagen and soft furnishings from Hay that encapsulate the elegance of Danish design.

LANTERN HOUSE AN ARCHITECTURAL FEAT OVERLOOKING NEW YORK CITY
LOCATION: WEST CHELSEA, NEW YORK CITY RESIDENCES
An architecturally striking condominium building with plenty of star power to boot, Lantern House, perched along the High Line at 515 West 18th Street, is the first residential project in North America by Thomas Heatherwick, the acclaimed designer of Hudson Yards’ Vessel. Comprised of 181 elegantly appointed residences, Lantern House is slated to welcome residents in the fourth quarter of 2020. It includes a 22-storey west building and a 10-storey east building, conjoined by a dramatic glass lobby pavilion. Its impressive façade features hand-laid antiqued grey brickwork and a reinvented three-dimensional bay window that maximises light. This connects beautifully with the interiors by March & White, which are inspired by the history of the neighbourhood, complete with warm natural materials, elegant custom finishes, solid core wood doors and integrated appliances – all under striking 10.75-foot-high ceilings. Outside, residents are able roam around the expansive courtyards planted with maple and magnolia trees that flank a 1,900sqft free-standing glass-walled lobby pavilion. Surrounding the garden are facilities the likes of a library lounge with fireplace, a spectacular rooftop sundeck, a coworking lounge, a 20-guest private dining suite, and a two-storey health club curated by fitness giant Equinox that features a 75-foot long swimming pool, a hot tub, traditional and infrared saunas, a yoga and stretching room, a private training room. It’s all set to satiate the needs of even the most discerning resident.

Nestled within the trendy district of northern Bangkok’s Thong Lo, the newly unveiled residential landmark Khun by Yoo is the brainchild of real estate developer Sansiri, which enlisted iconic French designer Philippe Starck and design studio Yoo to conceive this first-of-its-kind holistic branded luxury residence. The newest addition to the Sansiri Luxury Collection spans 27 stories and comprises 148 units (the five unit types range from one- to three-bedroom spaces). Its design narrative is rooted in “industrial heritage” – a nod to Starck, who was born just after the Second World War in the postMachine Age era – with quality materials such as raw concrete, dark merbau hardwood, beautifully veined Arabescato Classico marble and washed stones adorning the interiors. A similar eye for detail extends to the selection of furnishings, which includes a large bespoke centrepiece chandelier from Barovier & Toso, as

well as Starck’s Axor One shower system and special-edition Duravit highend bathroom sanitaryware. Those seeking to savour a full spectrum of luxury living will delight in the property’s five-star facilities, with a 30-metre infinity pool from which one can enjoy 180-degree vistas of the city while sitting next to the cosy common areas, as well as a fully-equipped gym, a mini-theatre and an expansive rooftop garden complete with its own bar. It all makes for a one-of-a-kind elevated living experience. ђໃਅӱ˵ᖓࣂֆഷਂdࡄ్ྭؿϾΩΔᅟKhun by YooᙔָΔଐೕ ࢄਆSansiriؿ෮ɾАeSansiriᑼᇼടΊؒਝஉ߮Philippe Starckஉ߮ɮА ۩Yoo࿚܆ˮࠖևȹͲؿܞʿϽႚജϾΩඖ͌eSansiri Luxury Collection ࿏Ɏؿณඖ͌૪ၰ27ᄙᅢcͳτ148௰ϽcஉʄိȹָԷɍָɺ೩ؿ௰Ͻ ᗘێeኬيංྵടɮพፘଐؿዟऋࠓࣟc͛ܰྦྷɀωɣኝ܃ˮ́ ؿPhilippe

Unveiled to the public for the first time in 150 years, Chelsea Barracks has been transformed from a dilapidated British Army barracks into a coveted residential neighbourhood boasting a holistic lifestyle. Developed by
A FORMER BARRACKS IN LONDON TURNED ALLURING RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOOD
Qatari Diar Europe, the sprawling 12.8-acre historic site is now home to a collection of apartments, townhouses, penthouses and mews houses, as well as The Garrison Club – a state-ofthe-art amenity offering that includes a 12,700sqft private spa, a 20-metre swimming pool, a tepidarium, a cinema and more, with 24-hour concierge service for residents. With its furnished show residence revealed late last year, interior design studio Elicyon’s painstaking aesthetic approach is evident in every corner of the luxury abode.
LOCATION: BELGRAVIA, LONDON RESIDENCES
While paying tribute to the site’s military heritage with a palette of blues inspired by the Chelsea Pensioners’ navyblue undress uniforms, the property also features exquisite detailing, such as a sophisticated ivory canvas dotted with accents of gold that exudes a sense of timeless elegance, as well as bespoke joinery taking its cue from the nearby Chelsea Bridge. Among several units, this 4,300sqft dwelling with a soaring 2.8-metre-high ceiling includes four en suite bedrooms, two living rooms, a dining room, a cinema room, a study, and a kitchen complete with top-notch lighting fixtures and appliances. For this property, the icing on the cake is the ethereal public gardens, spanning five acres. כ150αԞࠖωΉʔଠ్ࠍ॓ؿChelsea Barracks c ಄ᓿ߶ߜؿМᏪฎӸȹᛰιొݯԜѧኬ́ݠࡨͲؿณϾΩਂe ኟτ੫ɔዃ̌ؿ12.8ߜङඖ͌ͅQatari Diar Europeೕc ˞ȹӡͶؿϾΩdᐲખПྎdᄙʔఓథϾ۰ୂιeԜϾʸ ਿԔؿకൔผֺThe Garrison ClubஉܪȹᎶ࠭Ͳcɻ˳ܢɣ
