hello

Floral art This month we dropped in on Melbourne florist Hattie Molloy to see her new studio – and get some expert flower-arranging tips! Check it out from p132.

FINDING YOUR PERSONAL DECORATING STYLE is far easier than people think. One of the best tricks is to look at the other aesthetic choices you’ve made in your life. What do your clothes look like? What sort of jewellery do you like to wear? These are things you’ve chosen based on looks, as well as comfort – and decorating a home is much the same. Instinctively, we’re drawn to certain styles. Take Margherita Missoni, for example. Her home office (p104) is a wonderful extension of her personal aesthetic. It’s bold, ultra-feminine and colourful – much like the clothes she wears and designs for her eponymous label. Our up-front decorating story this issue (p12) is also inspired by the colours and patterns of autumn/winter fashion. Creating it was the most fun! We ventured out to the fabric and craft stores, stocked up on zippers and trims and started designing cushions. None of us being particularly great sewers, however, meant that we needed to call in an expert. We set up a little sewing space in the office and employed super-talented UTS textiles graduate, Nethmi, to help us create piles of cushions. She’s totally brilliant and has even inspired me to have a crack on our flash new Brother sewing machine. Another of my favourite features this issue is about the hero of the cheeseboard: a creamy French style (p140). I love cheese, and it was great to find out all the different extras you can put alongside it on a platter. As for what accessories to serve it with, this month if you subscribe or resubscribe to real living, you get a gorgeous Laguiole cheese knife set. Yes, that was a shameless plug for my mag, but seriously… a free cheese knife set!

MODERN HIS T ORY

1961

words lindyl crabb | photography courtesy of diptyque

Almost 60 years after its doors first opened, Diptyque is paying homage to its home town with two Paris-inspired fragrances PARIS SMELLS SWEETER at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain. Home to luxury fragrance company Diptyque’s premier boutique, the store is like an olfactory teleporter ready to whisk you off to a balmy beach in Vietnam, a rose garden in England or a Greek island ripe with fig trees. This iconic address also inspired the company’s name – its shopfront windows resemble the two panels of a diptych artwork. Diptyque was founded by interior designer Christiane Gautrot, theatre set designer Yves Coueslant and Desmond Knox-Leet, a painter. The boutique was originally a bazaar of fabrics and exotic treasures unlike anything else in Paris. As demand grew, the trio quite literally followed their noses and began launching their own scented products – candles in 1963 and a unisex eau de toilette called L’Eau in 1968. The brand’s early and enduring success comes down to creative chemistry, intuition and attention to detail. Desmond designed the instantly recognisable oval-shaped logo; his love of calligraphy lives on with every hand-drawn label. The name of each product is written with black India ink and the letters dance around in poetic typography. To create the illustrated packaging, large sketches are refined until one aspect embodies the corresponding scent. Similarly, each fragrance is inspired by a time, place or story. For example, the Paris en Fleur rose-scented candle was inspired by the city’s Bagatelle botanic garden. And to concoct the imperfectly elegant fragrance Eau Capitale, perfumer Olivier Pescheux chose rose, patchouli and pink peppercorns. This enigmatic mix of floral, woody and zesty notes is called a chypre scent, which has been described as the “epitome of parisienne chic”. Just like Diptyque. R

In 1961, Christiane Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet and Yves Coueslant (above) founded Diptyque. The friends designed fabric and started making scents to match their textiles. Illustrator Pierre Marie created the new Art Nouveau-inspired Diptyque packaging and stained glass (left).

1963

Diptyque’s first perfumed candles, Aubépine, Cannelle and Thé (hawthorn, cinnamon and tea), launched in 1963. These were created above the original Paris boutique in Desmond’s workshop.

2012

In 2012, Diptyque unveiled an oval-shaped fragrance bottle. These new apothecary-style vessels were designed to embody the shape of the product labels, which were inspired by a Roman guard’s shield.

2020 This year, Diptyque paid tribute to Paris with the launch of the new Eau Capitale eau de parfum and the Paris en Fleur scented candle, which are available in Australia at Mecca.

Colour theory “I wanted to make an ugly thoroughfare beautiful by highlighting the arch,” says Olivia. “The frame of the found painting of a sailor [opposite] informed the choice of colour, Dulux ‘Manor Red’.”

loving Meet the boss “I’m still learning to take risks with colour,” says Olivia, pictured reclining in the lounging area on a chair she bought on Gumtree and reupholstered in Zepel Fabrics’ Geologic Eclipse. On display “Open shelves force you to keep things clean and be selective with what you have,” she says. “Being a restaurant and wedding venue, all the crockery is in high use so it never just sits there and gets dusty.”

DUNES PALM BEACH, NSW

words julia fairley | photography tom ross | design olivia bossy

space crush

Designer Olivia Bossy brought homely vibes to this beachside eatery IT’S RARE TO FIND a space that combines barefoot comfort with a luxurious vibe, but Dunes restaurant in Sydney’s Palm Beach pulls it off. “Think sandy feet with a martini,” says designer Olivia Bossy, who wanted it to feel like more of a home than a restaurant. Every element in the 230-sq-m interior is vintage, restored or custom-designed, mainly using building materials and offcuts from the site. The owners, foodies Brett Conway (formerly of Three Blue Ducks in Sydney) and chef Jesse McTavish (ex North Bondi Fish), requested a sandy palette. However, Olivia was keen to delineate a thoroughfare leading from the lounging area to the dining space and a rich splash of burgundy did the trick. She channelled a mix of influences to create the unique aesthetic, which she describes as, “a little Puglia farmhouse and a little seaside Majorca, on a foundation of Palm Beach sand dunes”. International inspiration aside, the casual design references the local surfing and boating culture, right down to the choice of material for the custombuilt fibreglass bar and banquette. “I see people touching it, wondering what it is, all the time,” Olivia says. There’s no denying surf’s up in this seaside sanctuary. A real living

29

Light work Olivia designed the ceramic sconces with a subtle finish inspired by fish scales. “A wonderful local lady painstakingly made them using a Paddle Pop stick to create the ‘scales’,” she says. Tactile texture “Sand dunes and their layers, textures and repetition informed the materials and colours,” Olivia says.

mix, don’t match If you’re combining second-hand treasures and different styles, decide on a scheme before hitting the op-shops. “Some clarity is needed when sourcing only vintage or the vision can be diluted,” says Olivia. Look to handmade objects and mix styles with minimalism in mind to create a relaxed ambience. R

Raising the bar Olivia’s favourite feature is the fibreglass bar with tile inlay. “No one knew if it would work, so it was incredibly satisfying when it was finished,” she says. Reuse and recycle The coffee tables were made using offcuts from the building site and old doors owned by the builder.

NETHERLANDS-BASED DESIGNER AND ARTIST Sabine Marcelis and her partner Paul Cournet were moving out of their old apartment when they fell in love with this 1920s paper factory. “The 520-sq-m space was totally empty when we first saw it, not even electricity or water,” Sabine says. “The real estate agent said ‘take it or leave it’ – we took it.” LESS IS MORE Creating their industrial-style home was a labour of love for the couple. “The renovation was supposed to take three months,” Sabine says. “It ended up taking more than a year.” The first step involved removing the ceiling at the back of the building and creating a terrace that floods the home with natural light. The layout was designed without walls, except in the bathrooms. Instead, Sabine used curtains to create different living zones. “We wanted to avoid walls in our home,” she explains. “When the curtains are open, all the zones become one single space. We love the flexibility.” WHERE THE ART IS The walls, floors and ceilings are neutral, allowing the open-plan space to be styled with unique pieces that add colour, texture and interest. You could easily mistake this property for a thoughtfully curated gallery, but their intention was quite the opposite. “We would rather call it an anti-home,” says Sabine. “Our home is a space where our daily life is fused with design and art pieces from our friends. Our aim was to create a clean and uncluttered but inspiring surrounding, not a gallery or museum setting.” Indeed, while there are original and repurposed works created by Sabine herself throughout the home, she was careful not to turn their private residence into a showroom of her designs. “Each piece that surrounds us has a specific story and this is what matters to us.” R Meet the owners Sabine and Paul (pictured) have put their personal stamp on this home, drawing from their design backgrounds and strong personal aesthetics. Side hustle This white Pyramid Candy Cube was a project designed by Sabine for the brand Céline. It creates the perfect side table for a stack of beautiful books. Curtain call The bedroom (opposite) is separated from the dining area by double-tracked curtains that Sabine constructed herself from fabrics used in greenhouses to control lighting conditions. A

Heart on a plate The kitchen is Sabine’s favourite area. “Everything happens in the kitchen, we spend most of our time there,” she says. “Even when we have dinner parties we often don’t make it to the actual dining table!” Clear cut The ombré glass topping the dining table (opposite) is a test panel from a previous project. Chairs designed by Sabine and Paul and constructed from stacked foam and resin add a sculptural element.

ways to use decorative glass in your home

1

Welcome guests with a front door featuring glass. Whether it’s stained glass, textured or plain, it is also a wonderful way to let in natural light.

2

Make a statement in your kitchen with textured glass cabinets to showcase glassware and dinnerware in both modern and classic kitchen styles.

3

A table with a glass top looks sleek and makes a room feel larger. A sculptural or interesting base can transform a functional piece into a feature.

4

Use coloured, patterned, or textured lighting – opt for statement pieces or simple, classic pendants depending on the look you want. A

Book it in The couple’s prized tomes and objects are displayed on floor-to-ceiling Phil Procter bookshelves that line the wall of the seating area. This space features a Martin Visser sofa, a FM60 armchair by Radboud van Beekum, a pink Impose Flocked Velvet saddle seat by Handmade Industrials, a Rens rug and the Pyramid Candy Cube designed by Sabine. Unconventional colour This One Yellow Line mural by the Dutch artist Thomas Trum takes pride of place in the guest bedroom (opposite). Location, location “I find myself in the kitchen a lot and as it’s situated in the centre of the house, I can see the kids playing in the garden or the lounge room,” Prudence says of the kitchen’s ideal position. Top tiles The home’s original slate flooring was replaced with European terracotta roof tiles from Gather Co., which were installed in a herringbone pattern. Inside out Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer unobstructed backyard views, allowing the garden to be enjoyed year-round.

WHEN AUSTRALIAN ABSTRACT ARTIST Prudence Oliveri and her husband Damian, the founder of Oliveri Design and Construction, were searching for their next home and renovation project four years ago, they never expected to purchase Oliveri’s one-time childhood home. But, in what can only be described as a twist of fate, that’s exactly what happened. COME HOME Located in Torquay’s seaside suburb of Jan Juc on Victoria’s Surf Coast, the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home was built by Prudence’s parents in the late 1980s and is where Prudence – known as Prudence Caroline in the art world – lived when she was just three years old. Three decades later, by pure chance, the property was put up for sale while the couple was house hunting and it became home once again for Prudence and her young family. As the residence hadn’t been touched since it was built, the husband and wife duo undertook major renovations before moving in: transforming the dining and kitchen into one large kitchen; re-painting the interior; replacing carpet with floorboards; fitting new wardrobes, ensuite and heating; and outside, buiding retaining walls and flattening the once-sloping land. ART ATTACK The house, which Prudence describes as “mid-century modern inspired”, is framed with floor-to-ceiling windows and the interior is as refined and contemporary as it is joyful – a description that also works for Prudence’s paintings. The home is brought to life with a collection of art, a mix of her own works and pieces she and Damian have collected throughout their relationship. While the interior is impressive, it’s outside in the lush garden where the Oliveris enjoy spending time as a family. “The kids love exploring the garden, feeding the fish in the pond and picking herbs from the vegetable patch,” says Prudence. “We have a lot of picnic lunches on the grass. Lulu loves the swing and Teddy plays with cars on the steps while Damian and I tend to the garden.” Probably just how things were 30 years ago when Prudence first lived here. R @reallivingmag

State of the art “We started our art collection when we were in our early twenties. We like to gift each other artworks for special occasions as they then remind us of these moments in our lives,” says Prudence. Top pick “My favourite artwork in the house is the tiny Steve Salo portrait that hangs above our bed,” says the artist.

ways to introduce colour into your home

1

Embrace a feature wall but make it modern and fresh by choosing a contemporary hue for a wall with a panelled or textured finish.

2

Forget the white subway tile, be bold with a coloured bathroom tile. If bright isn’t your style, a subtle pastel hue is a great way to execute colour.

3

If coloured finishes aren’t your thing, consider adding colour with art. This allows you to move the colour around your home as you please.

4

Decor items such as cushions, books and florals are perfect for decorators who appreciate small pops of colour in the home. A real living

After bidding Paris au revoir, a French design duo finds a fresh start in this charming old home in the countryside Artist in residence Homeowner Marie Christophe (pictured) studied sculpture and drawing in Paris before Jean-Louis Dumas, the former artistic director of Hermès, discovered her work in 1996. She was commissioned to create life-sized horse installations for the brand’s stores and she continues to collaborate with luxury fashion houses today, working from her home studio in Gers, France. Bibliotheque style Whorls of books create an informal installation (opposite). A

who lives here? Marie Christophe, a sculptor, her husband Emmanuel Fenasse, an interior designer, and their sons Joseph, 18, and Raoul, 12. Mariechristophe.com | @mariefchristophe A

YOU CAN TAKE the sculptor out of France’s fashion capital, but you can’t take fashion out of the sculptor, especially when said artist is Marie Christophe. Before moving to the Gers hills in south-west France, Marie and her husband Emmanuel Fenasse, an interior designer, had lived in Paris for 18 years. They were dreaming of finding “a somewhere else” in the country when this rambling old home on the fringe of a meadow caught their collective eye in 2011. “We just wanted to be in a sunny part of France and my husband fell in love with the house,” Marie says. Since then, this avant-garde abode near Toulouse, the Pink City, which earned its name from the blush-toned stone used for many buildings, has set the stage for their lives and art, which the couple create in their home studio. LA VIE EN ROSE A visitor to Marie’s home once joked that the interior was “très bobo” – a French hipster-scoffing term – and it’s true this house has all the ingredients: mismatched wallpaper, antique relics and vintage finds peppered with big-name furniture brands. But despite the riot of styles, each space is so artfully curated and oozing with personality that the result is a delight. “We have Knoll with ethnic and classic furniture, so it seems ‘bobo’,” Marie says. “We tried to mix the designer furniture we had from Paris with old furniture we found in the countryside, and all the things we’ve bought on our trips in India, Italy, Morocco and Spain.” WALK THE WIRE Many of Marie’s whimsical wire and beaded sculptures adorn the family home’s walls, console tables, terracotta-tiled floors and even the occasional ceiling. She regularly rubs chic shoulders with creatives at iconic fashion houses who have embraced her fanciful and contemporary pieces, and she collaborates with the likes of Cartier, Dior, Hermès and Louis Vuitton to name-drop just a few fans of her work. But despite the lure of the City of Lights, this artistic sanctuary is the place she calls home. R

Design duo Emmanuel designed the bold black stratified wood table, which anchors Marie’s studio and pairs perfectly with her delicate wire sculptures on the desk and wall. Take it outside The family enjoys alfresco meals around the Angelo Mangiarotti table and Harry Bertoia chairs for Knoll. Handy man Emmanuel put his design skills to good use to reimagine and renovate the kitchen (opposite), mixing old and new.

colour-coordinating essentials To combine and clash colours like a pro, choose several hues and repeat them throughout your home. “I try to develop a palette,” says Marie, who layered blues, pinks and greens here. “For the rest, it’s just a question of decorating with light and feeling.” A In character A 1967 Snoopy table lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos looks thoroughly contemporary beneath Marie’s Octopus in Wire sculpture. Hands off Each room houses a treasure trove of curated objets d’art and in this case, brass accessories. Bespoke blues An upstairs bedroom is dressed in custom curtains from Tangier and features a bespoke marquetry bench by Emmanuel, which stages Marie’s Saint Remy wire lamp. Mid-century classics In the salon (opposite), a 1960 Parallel Bar sofa by Florence Knoll reclines beside an iconic Eero Saarinen “Womb” chair and Knoll marble tables.

homes Maximum impact Emmanuel designed the black stratified wood console table, which is an island of maximalism in a minimalist hallway. “The terracotta tiles are original and it was very important for us to keep them,” Marie says. “On the second floor everything is new, but we tried to make the floorboards look original.” Aviary style Upstairs in the aptly named ‘Bird’s Room’ (opposite), greens and pinks adorn the walls and floor, which are picked up and repeated in the nostalgic bedding.

3 minimalist ways to nail maximalist style at home

1

Go overboard, but in moderation. Style up a single surface with vignettes or create a dramatic accent wall, then practise restraint elsewhere.

2

Choose a colour scheme or palette of hues and lavish them throughout your home. Be bold, but stay true to your selected scheme for a coordinated look.

3

To amp up texture, mix materials, such as timber panelling and tiling, across whole floors and vast stretches of walls instead of in single rooms. A real living

79

Timeless appeal The bespoke straw-covered sideboard in the dining area is one of the many pieces designed by Emmanuel. A 1962 Arco lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos crowns the space and illuminates the marble Tulip table by Eero Saarinen. A mix of classic bentwood chairs ties the big-ticket items together in form and ďŹ nish for a polished look. Board game A white-painted chequered pattern revives old and damaged stone tiles in one of the family’s north-facing outdoor dining areas. Optical illusion Emmanuel designed the custom sideboard using straw marquetry. Vintage vibe The couple found the green velvet sofa (opposite) at an antiques market.

Sculpt it “All the wire work is mine,” Marie says of the sculptures that sit on a sleek black console in her studio, which was designed by Emmanuel. On the wall is a playful twist on traditional tapestry with a pair of Marie’s Bee sculptures.

rebuild ourtowns • AU S S I E S L E N D I N G A H A N D •

The practical things you can do to help rebuild Australia, one town at a time There’s not a single Australian who hasn’t had their hearts broken by the horrific bushfires that have swept through our country. The road to rebuild will be long but as a nation we will: brick by brick, fence by fence. Bauer Media launched this campaign to help our neighbours in their time of need. Each week we will shine a spotlight on a town telling our generous readers how they can help, from the best fundraisers to donate to that specifically benefit the locals, to products they can buy from that town or region that support small businesses there. We’ll highlight the farmers who need fencing supplies, the schools which are short of books and pencils, the yoga school that needs mats or how to plan a getaway to the region when the time is right to bolster their local tourism industry. The Rebuild Our Towns campaign is centred on the fact that practical help doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Our love and thoughts go out to every person, but actions speak louder than words, so join us to make a difference and help our heartland heal.

Go to rebuildourtowns.com.au and watch as we move from one town to another over the coming months

Natural instinct Margherita and her husband started buying furniture before their home was finished and the floral wallpaper in her office was something she’d had her eye on for a long time. “I wanted it in my house, but as it’s extremely feminine this is the only place I felt allowed to use it.”

Fashion meets interiors... You could say Margherita Missoni was born with great style. After all, she’s heir to the Missoni family fashion empire and creative director of the company’s casual womenswear line M Missoni. So when Margherita and her husband Eugenio Amos built their dream family home in northern Italy, she decorated it herself and turned her work space into an extension of her personal style, which she describes as happy, relaxed and instinctive. “My favourite room is my office. It was the only place that was mine, where I could set my girly side free,” Margherita says. But although she’s an influential fashion icon, tackling this project without interiors experience proved to be a challenge. Here’s how her sense of style came in handy. A @reallivingmag

Margherita’s approach to decorating her home... “I’ve always collected photos, pages from magazines and images that I find online. I love cataloguing – it helps me get my head straight – so when I started working on the house I already had a folder of ideas and things I liked. My husband and I put together a book with our inspirations divided into categories and when the house was designed we would mentally place furniture in the rooms. My main focus was to capture our full personality. In order to be happy living in this house we needed a piece of ourselves to be reflected within it.”

Margherita’s top tip for first-time decorators... “Research – a lot! Although fashion and interiors have similar sensibilities, the execution is different. My advice is to research interior decorating and look at houses to understand the balance required. I also know that the objects you have a close connection with are the ones that make you feel at home.” R Fresh pick Daisies, which are Margherita’s namesake flower, feature throughout the room. “Behind every daisy there’s a story to tell. For example, the daisies embroidered on the blinds are made with 1960s metallic fabric that Rosita [her grandmother] gave me.” Pretty organised Margherita keeps labelled storage boxes covered in printed paper and inspiring decor on the built-in shelves and units (opposite). “In contrast to the wallpaper the shelves are rigorous – I always need a bit of contrast.”

WORKING WITHIN THE CONFINES OF A LIMITED FOOTPRINT can be an exciting design challenge. What begins as a lesson in practicality soon turns to an exploration of the endless possibilities available to those who see a small space but think big. Such was the case when Wendy Davey of Cranberry Design was enlisted to create a guest quarters/teenage retreat by a couple looking to make use of the unfinished shell above the garage at the back of their property. The brief was simple enough; create a beautiful European-inspired abode with a French pied-à-terre feel. Wendy began turning the framework — which had been built during the main home renos years prior — from storage space to elegant studio. Not one to do things by halves, she began a rigorous pre-reno consultation with her clients. “We researched a lot of French apartments and picked out our favourite touches and adapted them to Australian trends and lifestyle,” Wendy says. “They wanted an escape that was completely separate from the house, easy to maintain and lock and leave when they go away, with enough storage for a couple to live there permanently.” As a one-bedroom studio, consistency was key to ensuring a resolved design scheme flowed throughout the home. “We always start from the ground up,” Wendy says. “Flooring is our first choice, then we work on the colour scheme. The accent colour went back and forth between red and navy, but in the end we decided we had to have both!” A

In plain sight The custom Navtext joinery, designed by Cranberry Design, is a striking yet subtle design feature.

Form and function To keep a seamless feel in the kitchen, the benchtop and splashback are made from the same Dekton surface, creating a subtle continuity. A compact oven and two-burner stovetop, both from Miele, are practical yet luxe inclusions to ensure the space works as a standalone guest stay. Can lights from TecLED and skylights provide illumination. Taps are Brodware from Navi. Artwork by Stacey Rees. HK Living vases and a Fenton & Fenton terrazzo bookend add sculptural appeal. The Blue Paradise artwork by Elaine Green speaks to the surrounding hues. Double duty As there was no outside access for a drying rack, a multi-use cupboard was created. “I needed to get ventilation to the cupboard, so this was a starting point for the battened timber used in the joinery.” Up top A feature wall in Whale Watching from Porter’s Paints and Woodcut ‘Sandwashed’ floorboards with custom brass nosing welcomes guests. At first blush Custom curtains in Mokum ‘Eternal’ fabric by Cranberry Designs create warmth.

BEDROOM

Creating a guest suite that was warm and inviting was a top priority for Wendy and her clients. “It needed to be simple with lovely linens, textures and a muted colour scheme,” Wendy says. Pale engineered timber flooring was chosen for its soft and natural look, as well as its chameleon-like ability to withstand different environments meaning it could be used throughout the home. Adding to this visual effect was the feature whitewashed custom joinery that runs along the entire length of the studio apartment. “The idea of the joinery was that it would fade into the background,” Wendy says. “It needed to be beautiful and subtle, but not fighting for attention” and, most importantly, a space-saving feature that allowed for all the necessary mod cons to be concealed when not in use. Everything was cleverly integrated, “so as to not break up the lines” including the Dekton benchtop and splashback in the kitchen and the complete European laundry. With no opportunity for windows along the house-facing side and the clients’ request to have the studio “bathed in natural light”, skylights were used to open up the darker side of the studio and bathroom, and create an airy and spacious feel while delineating the kitchen from the living and dining area creating zones. While not without its setbacks (the build took months longer than expected), the final product is a lesson in what can be achieved when purpose aligns with pleasure. “It was a lovely collaborative relationship,” Wendy says. “The design itself is beautifully well resolved and the rooms are used exactly how we had envisioned.” R

Scrub up Though small in actual scale, the bathroom feels roomy and bright thanks to the clever use of a mirrored wall and skylights that let the light pour in. The custom-made mirrors are by Cranberry Designs. The basins by Studio Bagno from Navi sit on top of a beautiful Dekton vanity, which perfectly complements the subtle Brodware tapware. Creature comforts An Artemide sconce blends in with the feature wall painted in Transit of Venus from Porter’s Paints. Collected curios are displayed on the Douglas and Bec bedside table. Bedlinen from Society of Wanderers makes the room guest-ready. Clay Bird art print by Stacey Rees.

Many flat-pack kitchen companies now offer new-generation custom designs. “You can have the best of both worlds by combining modular and cut-to-measure,” says Briony Mikrou, marketing communications manager at Kaboodle Kitchen. “Customers can make the most of storage space, remove the need for filler panels and reduce joints to create a flush designer look.” Seek out oversize handles or leather pulls for an added custom touch.

2 hello, colour Swapping dated cupboard doors with fresh new fronts is an easy way to update a kitchen with colour. “Black, rich greens and navy are making their way into people’s kitchens as renovators opt for fashion-led but affordable interior solutions,” Briony says. Continue your scheme with colourful appliances, napery and planter pots in your kitchen, as well as artwork and furniture in adjacent areas.

3 it takes two For an on-trend design, look to two-toned cabinetry for your upper and lower cabinets, or enliven neutral cabinets with a contrasting kitchen island. “Two-toned palettes work as long as the colours and materials

complement each other,” Briony says. “Creating a contrast adds visual interest, especially when you pair dark and light neutral colours or solid colours with timber-look cabinetry.”

4 imperfect perfect The trend for texture is here to stay with timber-look cabinetry and concrete-inspired benchtops such as Kaboodle’s Yamaroo, which exudes a cool rawness. Pair tactile surfaces with handmade pulls for a perfectly imperfect look, and work in open shelving and display storage. Seek out organic everyday objects for decor, including chunky chopping boards, a stone mortar and pestle, earthenware crockery and linen tea towels.

5 stone faced Of all these aesthetics, none says luxury more than the look of marble and terrazzo. These enduring stones work with any colour and material, thanks to their natural beauty, which is echoed in laminate surfaces such as Kaboodle’s matt Biancoccino and Terrazzola. Look for scuff-resistance and anti-fingerprint technology and team with metallic details including brass cupboard pulls and cutlery or copper tapware and light fittings. R

HOW TO EARN & SAVE

money moves to make Having trouble buying a home? Here are five ways to break into a tough property market and have your smashed avo, too

AS HOUSE PRICES RISE, the Aussie dream of home ownership is changing. Most of us still want to buy property – according to The Real Home Reality Survey by Real Insurance, seven out of 10 (69.9%) Australians say it’s important – but while we once wanted a quarter-acre suburban block, now our goals are more lifestyle driven and financially focused. If you are one of the three in five prospective home buyers who feels locked out of the market, here are five ways to get a foothold sooner.

1

Share the home, split the costs Joining financial forces with a trusted family member or forever friend can increase your collective deposit, so it’s worth considering the idea. More than one quarter of homeowners (28.1%) received financial support from their families when saving for a home, but have you considered a joint property investment with them instead? Just be sure you get a solicitor to draw up a watertight contract before you buy to ensure you agree on how you’ll use, manage and maintain the property and its expenses over time. This can also help protect your friendship if disagreements arise – the last thing you want is for double funding to turn into double trouble.

2

consider an investment property Sacrificing the dream of owning a house to live in and turning your attention to buying an apartment to rent out can open up a new world of opportunities. To find an apartment with a great rental return, do your research and keep an eye out for high-growth areas. Almost a third of homeowners who broke into the market bought a different type of property to their ideal home (31.3%) and purchased one that was smaller than their dream home (30.9%). You may still be able to rent in the suburb you love and, if things go well, you could upsize and buy a bigger home to live in later on.

Wild thing Padded tech bag in Leopard, $175, Incu.

3

look at neighbouring suburbs The three rules in real estate are location, location and location, but casting a wide net increases your opportunities when looking at potential suburbs. The majority of hopeful homeowners (79.8%) would consider purchasing a property away from their ideal location, with just over half of us (52.3%) being open to buying in a different state or territory. Most people know how it feels to fall in love with an area you can’t afford, so looking to its less-expensive neighbours can present purchasing opportunities and increase your chances of breaking into the market. Of the lucky bunch who have already bought a home, almost a third (30.3%) purchased further afield than their ideal location.

advice

4

build a tiny house Have you thought of downsizing with a tiny house? Most prospective homebuyers (80.1%) would consider sacrificing the size of their ideal home, and just over half (55.1%) of Australians would be open to buying a tiny house. Thanks to their petite proportions, these real-estate rescuers are significantly quicker and cheaper to build than larger homes. And if you or a family member is fortunate enough to have space to spare, you might be able to fit a tiny house on an existing site, which saves on the cost of land. As a bonus, tiny houses make great holiday rentals.

5

Crossover Anouk crossbody bag in Citron, $279, Oroton.

buy a doer-upper We get it, owning an ugly duckling is not what dreams are made of – you’re a stylish bunch, after all – but it will get you a foot in the door. Buying the worst house on the best street and doing it up is an old trick, but still a goodie. The majority of people who have bought their own home (81%) believe compromising was difficult but necessary. But make sure you’ll be able to do what you want with it – commission a thorough building report and ask an architect or builder to do a walk-through before you bid. R

Do you know the facts? • Aussies believe the top factors making it harder for younger generations to buy a home are overseas investors and low wage growth (both 86.8%), the required deposit for a home (86.6%) and stamp duty (81%). • To save up for a home, most prospective home buyers are spending less on clothing, footwear and accessories (69.6%); hobbies and interests (62.3%); tech gadgets (61.8%); eating out or socialising (60.6%); and travelling (54%). • More than a third of people (36.4%) are delaying starting a family to save for a home. • Eight out of 10 people believe older Australians got a better deal in the property market. • Almost three in four people (73.2%) think younger Australians are being judged too much by older generations for their financial choices. • More than three in five would-be homeowners (61.2%) want to buy a home to feel more secure, while for almost half of us (49.3%) the driving reason is to stop paying rent. • Almost three in five (57.1%) say purchasing their home was difficult. Not surprisingly, gen Ys are most likely to say this (72.8%), while baby boomers are least likely (47.5%). • When saving to buy a home, more than a third of homeowners took on more work (35.1%) and made the most of government schemes (34.7%) such as the First Home Owner Grant. • Most potential buyers (93%) would consider moving away from the city or inner city if it meant they could have a more affordable property. • Almost two-thirds of us (63.2%) believe the traditional Aussie dream is a thing of the past; the new dream for almost all of us (91.5%) is achieving happiness.

MELBOURNE’S HATTIE MOLLOY is not your average flower shop. Then again, the store’s eponymous founder is not your average florist. For the past four years Hattie has banished boundaries and attracted a strong following with her unorthodox work, which is rooted in floral art. Hattie started her business in 2017 after leaving a job in corporate HR. “As a child I wanted to be a florist,” she says. “I was always playing in my grandmother’s garden and making posies from stolen flowers.” These days, Hattie rises at 2:15am twice a week, arriving at the flower market by 3:15am. Her new Fitzroy studio evokes both a gallery with its thought-provoking plant art and a floral wilderness with its untamed installations. “I wanted the space to showcase and highlight my work in a way that felt like a representation of my art,” she says. It worked. Hattie first turned heads when she tipped three cubic metres of soil onto her old shop floor, sowed it with seeds and created a sculpture that bloomed along with her career. “This showcased my capabilities to execute more conceptual works to corporate clients,” Hattie says. “I loved the installation of rolling grass and gerbera hills I did afterwards for Melbourne Fashion Week; it really pushed the boundaries.” Hattie also runs floral artistry workshops, where she shares her insider’s insights. “When I began floristry I found it very hard to learn current techniques; it’s rewarding to pass on knowledge,” she says. Hattie believes proportion and choosing the right vessel are key to any arrangement, but as for rules, she says there shouldn’t be any. So don’t be surprised if you find a petite pumpkin lurking in one of her arrangements or a shortage of obligatory Mother’s Day bouquets here. Expect the unexpected. A Blooming buds The opening of Hattie’s brand new Fitzroy studio has been one of her proudest moments. “I designed my new studio to be an enjoyable and beautiful workspace for me to create in,” she says. Tiled surfaces allow the colourful arrangements and their breathtaking vessels to shine.

blooming blunders “It’s important to have the right proportion of flowers to your vessel,” Hattie says. “I find people always tend to use a vase that is too big for the flowers they have, which throws the whole arrangement off.” At home, Hattie uses bud vases to display single stems or arranges one type of flower en masse. And as for choosing a flower for its ‘it’ factor, don’t. “There is no such thing as bad flowers – think lilies, gerberas, carnations – there are only badly arranged flowers. Focus on form and shape when arranging, it’s about having amazing materials and great vessels.”

think outside the vase “I’m obsessed with collecting vintage coloured glass, Murano glass and battery vases,” Hattie says. “I’m always on the hunt for interesting ceramics and love Simone Karras, Cécile Daladier and Claudia Lau’s work.” Hattie doesn’t let colour dictate an arrangement. “You can always make the colour work with the right composition,” she says. And which plants are tickling her fancy at the moment? “I’m intrigued by unfurling fern fronds,” Hattie says. “They have such character but also look alien-like. I love plants that add an otherworldly element.” R See more of Hattie’s Molloy’s work on her website, HattieMolloy.com.au; Instagram @hattiemolloy

Stand out According to Hattie, ensuring the customer leaves smiling is “always about having amazing materials and great vessels.” Hanging out Not one to stick to the status quo, Hattie’s custom creations are in a league of their own. “Be instinctive about your choices and don’t be dictated by fads.” Welcome home Behind the door to her new studio lies a world of colour and creativity. the savoury types If you’re drawn to the savoury side of the cheese board, you can’t go past a rich olive tapenade. Salt-driven tapenade, which is often made with anchovies and capers, will balance out creamy cheese. When serving nuts with a soft cheese, go for pecans and walnuts – the sweetness of the pecans and the earthiness of the walnuts pair perfectly with this style. To take that contrast to the next level, team this mild Fromager d’Affinois ‘Florette’ with walnuts and a slather of tart fruit preserve. fruit, preserves and pastes When pairing fresh fruit with soft cheeses, start with sweet, slightly acidic cherries, apricots, blueberries and strawberries. Caramelised peaches and figs marinated in balsamic vinegar and drizzled with honey are also welcome additions. To cut through the cream and cleanse the palate, include muscatels and apple slices. You can add your favourite preserve or fruit paste from the pantry: plum or raspberry jam for the sweet tooths, a marmalade or chutney if you want more bite, and a sweet chilli jam for a hit of spice all work with this Pavé d’Affinois cow’s milk ‘Original’ that melts-in-your-mouth. “It has the Fromager d’Affinois signature silky texture and becomes runny over time,” Charlotte says. And when it comes to pairing this cheese with something sweet, she says right now you can’t go past figs. “It’s fig season!” A

carb loading With the cheese the star of your board, a fresh baguette and a generous serving of crackers are the supporting acts. Add some baked lavosh (or buy a packet of the snack-size flatbreads) and serve long linguette crackers that you can break off as you go. Flavoured herb crackers are ideal for grazing on and gluten-free seed crackers are great for guests with dietaries. Finally, slice up a baguette just ahead of time. The pillowy dough and crisp crust create the perfect base for rich and creamy cheeses, like this intense Fromager d’Affinois ‘Truffles’ which is made using black truffles from France. “Pair it with a glass of dry white wine or bubbles to cleanse the palate,” Charlotte adds. Circle stone trivet in Travertine, $129.95, Behr & Co. Poseidon tumblers in Amber,$100 for set of 6, Jardan. Artisan Biscuits ‘Miller's Elements’ crackers, $9.15, Simon Johnson. Platter Up Tantalise your tastebuds with creamy cheeses like no other and experience the flavours of France from your very own plate. Crafted in the RhôneAlpes region, Fromager d’Aff inois (pronounced “Fro-maj-ay Daffeenwah) – a play on the words fromager meaning cheese maker and aff inage, the process of cheeseripening –captures the essence of France. WHEN IT COMES to taste, it’s all about the journey. Take your tastebuds on a trip to France and add a selection of Fromager d’Affinois cheeses to your grazing platter. This Fromager d’Affinois quartet is sure to excite and delight family and friends – just add bubbles.

With its curated libraries and dapper details, this recently refurbished hotel in Cambridge gives the phrase staying on campus a stylish new meaning WHEN THE UNIVERSITY ARMS OPENED IN 1834, travellers unhitched their horses in the stables and spent the night upstairs. These days, guests enter through the porte cochère, its grand columns belying the fact it’s a recent addition. It took two years to restore this historic Cambridge hotel to the top of its class. Architect John Simpson had the facade fixed and, in keeping with the building’s architectural heritage, replaced the 1960s and ’70s extensions with a classical limestone entrance. Inspired by the town’s academic legacy, Martin Brudnizki designed the Edwardian-style interiors to be equal parts distinguished and witty. For example, a reading of The Wind in the Willows plays on repeat in the public bathroom and the carpet design is based on the university’s original tie. The 192 guestrooms and suites are situated on the top floors. The ground floor, which is a shared space, includes the reception clad in Cambridge Blue wall panelling and an impressive library where visitors can bury their nose in a book, order afternoon tea and sip on a literary-themed cocktail – a Blushing Byron or a Bloomsbury Boozer should hit the spot. The restaurant and bar, Parker’s Tavern, has wood parquetry floors, stained glass windows and college crest details. It’s reminiscent of a dining hall but here British food is served with flair, the produce is local and there’s an extensive wine list. Cheers to that. A

The hotel’s charming Edwardian-style decor complements the building’s historic architecture and aged parquetry flooring. High distinction Guests are greeted in the lobby (opposite) by a Cambridge-inspired colour scheme, patterned marble floors, grand chandeliers, Art Deco lamps and a fabric-covered reception desk.
