WELCOME! Welcome to the 2021 General Assembly of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship! Whether you are joining us from your home, your office or you are present in person at one of our locations being hosted in partnership with state and regional organizations and congregations, we are grateful that you are with us. This summer marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. While I wish we could have invited all of us to one location to mark our first 30 years and embrace a clarified vision for our future in ministry and mission, I have come to believe that this gathering is a remarkable way to mark this transitional moment in our Fellowship’s life. Never have we been able to invite more people into a General Assembly in more ways than we are this year. In its own unique way, this Assembly is an embodiment of the reach, hopes, dreams and agility that mark the life of our Fellowship. I am grateful to all of those who have worked so hard to make this unique Assembly a reality, from our CBF Global staff, to state/regional leaders, to staff and volunteers in host congregations and so many more. This year we come seeking renewal from the inside out. When we first imagined this unique assembly, we hoped that by late August our nation and the world would have made a decisive turn away from the coronavirus pandemic and that we would be seeking renewal for faithful ministry beyond the pandemic toward a new future. But, in the weeks leading up to this gathering, we have seen a resurgence of the virus through the increasing threat posed by the Delta variant. This changing reality is presenting new challenges for us, and many of them are unwelcome following nearly 18 exhausting and difficult months for our congregations, field personnel, state/regional leaders, Together for Hope practitioners, chaplains, pastoral counselors, church starters, partner ministries and our communities. This moment of our gathering is even more complex than any of us could have imagined months ago. Our genuine need to experience renewal from the inside out is even more intense than ever. Renewal is not something we can accomplish, arrange or create on our own. It is a work of sheer grace that the Triune God does among us. But the Scriptures teach us that we can make ourselves available for that renewing work through fervent prayer, worship, learning and making ourselves available for genuine community with holy friends and faithful Christians who are different from ourselves. This General Assembly is our Fellowship’s shared prayer that the Holy Spirit would fall on us, that the Risen Christ would be present among us, and that we would be renewed so that we might be faithful witnesses to Christ’s extraordinary power, incomprehensible love and participants in His transformation of the church and the world. So in these days, let us receive the Holy Spirit’s invitation, however we gather. May we be equipped through worship, prayer, conversation and study in many different forms. May the Holy Spirit renew us from the inside out until we become agents of God’s transformation. Paul Baxley Executive Coordinator, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship
BEING RENEWED FROM THE
INSIDE OUT
2021 CBF GENERAL ASSEMBLY
FROM THE MODERATOR Dear CBF General Assembly Participants, To those of you joining us, greetings! Welcome to General Assembly 2021! Our theme for this year’s Assembly is Being Renewed from the Inside Out—a fitting theme for the year we have had. When I agreed to serve as CBF Moderator, I had no idea my entire tenure would be carried out in the context of a global pandemic. As a pastor who spent over a year recording worship in an empty sanctuary, and as someone who lost a beloved family member to COVID-19, I still feel the exhaustion in the depth of my being from the events of this last year. At the same time, I am also proud of how my church, your churches and our Fellowship adapted. This was a year of creativity in which we learned to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in entirely new ways. All this change for the sake of ministry has been a gift. While I am yearning to carry this spirit of innovation into the coming years, I also recognize my being is still weary. I am longing to be renewed from the inside out. General Assembly promises to be such a time of restoration through our worship of God together, the opportunity to attend workshops and learn from one another and the chance to catch up with friends. I also want to thank our Cooperative Baptist Fellowship staff for all the ways in which they have adapted and shown incredible agility this past year. Last year in 2020, with very little notice, they pulled off an entirely virtual General Assembly; they creatively launched CBF Gatherings on Tuesday evenings via Facebook Live; they responded with compassion to the needs of pastoral and staff ministers and sponsored numerous respite retreat opportunities this summer. Just as our churches adapted, CBF also rose to meet the challenges we faced. The commitment of those who served on our Governing Board, Missions Council, Ministries Council and Nominating Committee to the work of God through our Fellowship was inspiring. Our CBF field personnel who serve around world, many of whom are in places where the COVID-19 vaccine is not yet widely available, have shown remarkable courage and resilience. We know this has been an isolating year, and we are grateful for the ways you have shared the love and compassion of Christ. We continue to hold you in our prayers. With gratitude for each of you, Carol McEntyre Moderator, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship

Keep Shaping the Future of Our Fellowship! Take the Aspirational Diversity Survey We want to hear from you!
In September 2019, CBF began a one-year journey Toward Bold Faithfulness, seeking first to discover and then to respond to God’s call for our Fellowship in this fourth decade of ministry. That journey discovered that “aspirational diversity” is one of the most powerful gifts of CBF congregations. CBF is excited to launch a new and important survey exploring missions, advocacy and justice issues in partnership with the Public Religion Research Institute as a follow-up to the Toward Bold Faithfulness survey to gauge the opinions of Cooperative Baptists on “aspirational diversity.” This survey will be available through the end of November.

While Christianity contracts in America, it is expanding around the world. What might we learn from the Global Church? Engage in conversation with leaders from Ghana/England, Honduras and Brazil from the Baptist World Alliance’s Commission on Evangelism. Pastora Acosta is a pastor in Honduras with a focus on under-privileged children and also serves as an international director for CODE, Inc.
Shauw Chin Capps serves as CBF Foundation President & Chief Development Officer for CBF, where she provides the overall leadership and management of the work of the CBF Foundation and CBF’s fund development strategies.
Kwame Adzam is a Ghanaian living in the United Kingdom who serves as the Global Leader for Evangelism and Discipleship at BMS World Mission and Vice-Chair of the BWA Commission on Evangelism.
Marion Armstrong joined HighGround Advisors in 2012 as Associate General Counsel. Her focus is counseling both institutional representatives and prospective donors in matters of charitable giving and nonprofit governance.
Diogo Carvalho Diogo is a husband, father, pastor and missionary at the Brazilian Home Mission Board and is the Professor of Missiology at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Caring for Self While Caring for Others— Post-Pandemic
Steven Porter is Coordinator of Global Missions for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
The past 18 months have been unlike anything we have experienced in our lifetime. Caring for ourselves is essential as we care for others. Join this panel of CBF-endorsed chaplains and pastoral counselors as we explore self-care in a post-pandemic world. Carita L. Brown is a CBF-endorsed chaplain with the rank of Major in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, 193rd Special Operations Wing, in Middletown, Pennsylvania, where she exercises spiritual leadership by providing pastoral care and opportunities for religious expression, arranging care for all faith groups and fostering positive morale. Robert Cooke is a CBF-endorsed pastoral counselor serving as a pastoral psychotherapist with Triangle Pastoral Counseling in Raleigh, N.C. since 2007, where he specializes in working with grief-related issues and adjusting to life transitions. Renée Lloyd Owen is the CBF Endorser and Director of Chaplaincy & Pastoral Counseling Ministries, after serving 20 years as a healthcare chaplain in health systems across the country.

2021 CBF GENERAL ASSEMBLY
In 2021, Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty celebrates where we have been and the many people all along the way who have supported, cared for and challenged us to advocate for religious freedom during our 85 years of service. Standing for everyone’s religious liberty in an increasingly diverse and polarized society is both an urgent and difficult mission. We are ready to move faith freedom forward, as we look forward to celebrating our centennial in 2036.
Join us as we:
Host an inclusive table where all religious and spiritual perspectives are not only welcomed but feel at home.
Expand our circle of supporters and of influence as we build a faith freedom nation.
Reimagine our mission at the intersection of race and religious liberty and launch the Project on Race and Religious Freedom.
Celebrate with us! For more on our 85th anniversary, visit BJConline.org/85years

CHAPLAINS & PASTORAL COUNSELORS It has been an honor this past year to journey with our Council on Endorsement to welcome 28 new clergy into the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Chaplaincy & Pastoral Counseling Ministries Family as CBF-endorsed chaplains and pastoral counselors! We endorsed clergy to serve as chaplains in multiple specialized settings, including hospitals and hospice organizations. Others are seeking to serve in the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army or as state National Guard chaplains. We endorsed chaplains to provide pastoral care to veterans at VA medical centers and to minister in prisons. Some endorsees serve as chaplain residents in a training program of Clinical Pastoral Education, as they continue their clinical education and experience. This year, we endorsed individuals representing a diversity of ethnicities, further enriching the sacred ministry our chaplains and pastoral counselors offer, as they live out their call to care for all persons. We also welcomed an Associate Endorser for Military Chaplaincy, Charlie Reynolds, whose experience as a retired chaplain, colonel with the U.S. Army, has been an asset to assisting our military chaplains to navigate their specialized setting. I am grateful for the skill and compassion displayed by our chaplains and pastoral counselors as they walk alongside others to meet them where they are in their journeys, offering emotional, spiritual and pastoral care during sacred times in their lives. I encourage you to use the Prayers of the People publication from CBF as a guide to pray daily for each of these who serves under the banner of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, as they represent an extension of the ministry in our local congregations and communities. As I have asked our chaplains and pastoral counselors how their CBF Family can best support them, the number one answer has been, “Pray for us.” Our prayers for them and their service as a part of our CBF family make a difference in furthering God’s Kingdom. Blessings, Renée Lloyd Owen CBF Endorser and Director, Chaplaincy & Pastoral Counseling Ministries
