Seeking Transformation This humble book invites us to join a profound and mysterious work: to participate in the triune God’s renewal of all things through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. By praying daily for people and programs animated by the Spirit of the living God—and supporting them financially—we seek the transformational development of God’s creation. And through prayer, the Holy Spirit also can transform us into a people in whom the kingdom of God is manifest “on earth as it is in heaven” (Mt 6:10). Not all of us will set aside the comforts of home to learn a new language and culture and serve sacrificially as a long-term missionary; but all of us can participate in the mission of God through prayer. As we pray, may the CBF field personnel in these pages—and the staff, church starters, chaplains and pastoral counselors interspersed among them—become as familiar as family. May their stories be etched on our hearts and minds. The Apostle Paul claims that together we are becoming “the household of God” (Eph 2:19). But to fulfill that promise, God gives us the instrument of prayer to bind us to people we may never meet in person, but with whom we share a common destiny. This is a profound mystery. The theme for the 2018-2019 Offering for Global Missions (OGM) challenges us “to change the world, one community at a time.” This focus originates in the third commitment of CBF’s trinitarian understanding of mission: Because the Father and Son sent the Holy Spirit to renew all things, we seek transformational development in the contexts of global poverty and global migration and in partnership with the global church. At CBF, we believe the gospel compels us: • to celebrate the image of God in every human life and in the gifts of every community. • to develop sustainable local assets with community stakeholders through advocacy, education and solidarity. • to make long-term commitments to transform structures that oppress people and degrade God's creation. This is the hard and holy work of transformational development. This work requires prayer. It requires financial support. And it requires our own transformation. Come, Holy Spirit, come! D. Steven Porter, Th.D. Coordinator of Global Missions 4 |

PRAYING FOR CBF MINISTRIES
Prayers for Transformation www.cbf.net/ministries
The 2018-2019 edition of CBF’s Prayers of the People invites you to consider the Voices of Transformation. The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, in ministries and in missions, is commited to seeking transformational development. The voices in this prayer guide tell of the good work led by field personnel, church starters, chaplains, pastoral counselors, congregational ministers, and CBF staff serving around the world. For CBF, transformational development means celebrating the image of God in every human life and in the gifts of every community. It means developing sustainable local assets with community stakeholders through advocacy, education and solidarity. It means making long-term commitments to transform structures that oppress people and degrade God’s creation. The voices — and the prayers offered alongside them — ask for God to transform us and the communities in which we live so that we may be made whole in the image of God who redeems us and loves us. Those who are mentioned in this book and their ministries are a testimony of the work being led by Cooperative Baptists for the sake of Jesus — whose hope faithfully guides us to do this transformational development. As you read and pray for these ministries over the next year, it is my prayer that God would transform you — that you would be faithful to God’s call upon your life — and live boldly by loving as God loves. May you be a Voice of Transformation in your part of God’s world this day. Joshua Speight Manager of Leadership Development Director, CBF Fellows

Transforming Grace “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV). Who are God’s people? For years, I attempted to answer this very question, going from one extreme to another. Could it be those who dress differently? Those who eat or speak differently? Or is it the ones that drive the car that Jesus would drive if He were among us? I was taught that to be God’s people implies to be changed, to be different from others in an almost violent way. Nevertheless, change is not the final goal of Christian living; it is, in fact, transformation, which is much more than change. It involves a slower process and sometimes is less noticeable. But at the same time, it is safer and more durable. Transformation is to rediscover the purpose and nature of all things. It is to allow for the truth to come to light. While change can happen through energy, passion and feelings, transformation frees us from the stress of believing that we have to make everything happen. This is because transformation occurs in silence, only when God’s unforced rhythms of grace are actively present. In a family in which we are being formed together with Jesus’ community, we are being transformed as we work toward the fulfillment of the original purpose of all things. Sometimes it may seem imperceptible; but transformation will always have a rhythm. It is a rhythm with no violence but, instead, one with hope. It is a rhythm without boasting or self-promoting, but with constant humility and compassion. Because love transforms everything it touches, God’s people are those that are capable of touching the world with the transforming grace of the Creator. Rubén Ortiz, a native from Santiago de Cuba, is the Latino field coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, after serving for 16 years as the senior pastor of La Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Deltona, Fla. A certificated spiritual director, Rubén and his wife, Xiomara, have two teenage children, Natalia Sofía and Daniel Andrés.

Jenny Jenkins
SEPTEMBER 1-8
Grand Goave, Haiti www.cbf.net/jenkins Jenny Jenkins serves through medical and relational ministries in Grand Goâve, Haiti, a rural community approximately 60 miles southwest of Haiti’s capital. Many of the 125,000 people of Grand Goâve are farmers, tradesmen, small business owners and educators. Ninety percent of the population live in the mountains and countryside with limited access to medical care and other services including electricity. A lack of literacy, education and business skills plagues the community and there is an overwhelming need for full-time work. But God’s presence is strong and the local churches are active in discipleship, education and other efforts to transform the community.
Pray for: • • •
Jenny’s outreach to widows through food kits, worship, medical care, visitation and home repair. the mobile medical clinics that provide basic family medicine and follow-up on chronic issues like hypertension and diabetes. the Grand Goâve Education Initiative that offers tutoring, Christian mentoring and meal fellowship, literacy classes, educational seminars and other opportunities like Vacation Bible School and youth sports.
But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children. Deuteronomy 4:9 www.cbf.net/pray

The congregation of The Message Church is a multi-generational community which values being real, relevant and relational. There is hope in the incarnational Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Everyone who comes in contact with The Message Church should be able to see that the church serves a real God who presents real hope for real people with real problems.

Angel and Jason Pittman
SEPTEMBER 23-30
Miami, Florida
www.cbf.net/pittman Angel and Jason Pittman serve as directors of Touching Miami with Love, which is committed to serving the most vulnerable of Miami-Dade County. With a continued focus on children, youth and adults with the greatest educational, social and safety needs, TML operates two centers in the neighborhoods of Overtown and West Homestead. Angel and Jason live and serve in the community of Overtown, a historic AfricanAmerican neighborhood that struggles intensely with poverty. Education levels are extremely low, with 72 percent of adults in the neighborhood without a high school diploma. This leads to a high unemployment rate of 28 percent. Drugs, crime and violence are commonplace, and children in Overtown are exposed to high rates of untreated trauma, impeding their ability to function well in school and continuing the cycle of poverty.
Pray for: • • • •
the hope of Jesus to shine through dark situations. the safety of the children and youth in communities plagued by violence. wisdom and strength within the leadership of TML. opportunities for children and youth to explore their God-given potential.

www.cbf.net/bailey Jonathan and Tina Bailey serve in Bali, Indonesia with emphasis on spiritual expression through music, dance and visual arts. Bali is home to a diverse community of people from around the world who have migrated to Bali for work or to explore a way of life that is less driven by consumerism. The Baileys encourage artists through the Narwastu Art Community, which provides the space for meaningful relationships that bridge cultural, linguistic and religious differences to begin and grow. Tina also teaches in a prison arts program for inmates in Bali’s high security prison, mentoring prisoners in art-making and forming relationships with inmates. She works to develop artistic technique as well as life-skills to assist them as they re-integrate into society after they are released. She also consults for other prisons that are also interested in developing similar programs.

Kristian Smith and Peter Wischusen
OCTOBER 24-31
The Faith Community | Tucker, Georgia Commissioned June 2018 Kristian Smith and Peter Wischusen have partnered together to co-pastor The Faith Community in Tucker, Ga., a part of the metro Atlanta area. The two met while in seminary, where they were burdened by the tendency of many congregations to inadequately reflect the diversity in their surrounding communities—or the diversity the two experienced in school. The mission of The Faith Community is to present to the newly-diverse Tucker area a model of church that emphasizes community and participation, which they have found to be appealing to the “unchurched,” the “under-churched” and the “over-churched.” With the Greatest Commandment as its foundational text, the church pledges to the city to be a voice for justice and a force for good.
For thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, “Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel.” Jeremiah 31:7

PRAYING FOR CBF MINISTRIES
Disaster Response Life Packs www.cbf.net/lifepack
When serving as CBF field personnel, Ryan Clark and his wife experienced many hurricanes (typhoons), the worst being Tropical Storm Sendong, that struck the southern part of the Philippines. While they were not directly affected, they joined teams to aid neighbors to the south. All told, over 2,500 people died from flooding and many others contracted illnesses from the lack of fresh water, shelter and electricity. Ninety percent of all natural disasters are water-related. In North America alone, about 35 hurricanes occur every year. A person can be swept away in as few as six inches of moving water and a car requires only 12. That is why the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship invites individuals and churches to join together in a ministry called Life Pack. Life Pack provides an opportunity for you to accompany those in crisis by gathering key resources that will be helpful during disaster response and recovery, including water filters, solar chargers, flashlights, fist-aid kits, prayers, and a Bible. The contents of your Life Pack will be combined with resources on the ground to help provide power for emergency communications, water filtration, light and temporary shelter while also attending to minor medical needs and promoting spiritual solidarity. Life Pack is a ministry anyone can join at all times of the year and includes resources such as congregational Bible studies, CBF Disaster Response training opportunities, and short-term mission trips. Find out how you and others at your church can join the Life Pack movement at cbf.net/lifepack

First Steps of Transformation One of the most powerful stories we have about transformation is the story of the blind beggar healed by Jesus. In Luke 18:35-43 (ESV), we read the story of a man who lived in darkness and survived as a beggar. His normal life was what family, friends and community expected from him and for him. At the same time, the man desired restoration of sight and, in fact, was hoping for a time when he might connect with one who could help. The blind man demonstrated awareness of his surroundings, exhibited knowledge of Jesus of Nazareth and most importantly, voiced a request for mercy. We know the story! Jesus saw the man, heard his cries and responded in love. Transformation occurred and continued even after the restoration of sight and praises of the people. Realistically, the situation required that the man find new work and that his family and community adjust—requiring patience, love and courage for all. Yes, we too can experience transformation; however, true transformation requires prayer, preparation, wisdom, courage, love, perseverance, patience and community. How might we respond to Jesus of Nazareth when asked “What do you want God to do for you? As individuals, in community and in our world, how might we take the first step toward transformation that leads to next steps? Dear Lord, we beg for transformation but the idea of the unknown is frightening. Calm our fear, help us prepare, grant us courage and walk with us in the journey toward true transformation. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

PRAYING FOR CBF MINISTRIES
Advocacy
www.cbf.net/advocacy
CBF Advocacy is rooted in the same spirit and call that motivates our mission endeavors: to demonstrate the love of Christ by loving our most neglected and marginalized neighbors. As Christians dedicated to service, we often encounter situations and issues in need of a strong voice. Such encounters create passionate advocates in our churches and among those serving across the globe. CBF Advocacy is about encouraging, equipping and promoting the voice of advocates in our midst as they encounter need. In doing so, we strive to exercise responsible Christian citizenship by modelling a more effective, positive and inclusive public witness for the church.

The Impact of Transformation Transformation that begins with a personal encounter with the living Christ can lead to transformation that ultimately affects the lives of others. This thought comes to mind in reading the New Testament narrative of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well, found in John 4:7-42. After engaging in a conversation with Jesus at the well, this woman overcame numerous barriers that led to her transformation. Once the woman of Samaria discovered how she could obtain the “living water” which would lead to her transformation, she immediately left her water pots, went into the city and said, “come see a man, which told me all things that ever I did. Is not this the Christ?” The Bible says many left the city and came to where Jesus was. Verse 39 relates that many of the Samaritans believed because of the testimony of the woman. Transformation came to a city because of one woman’s encounter with the living Christ. Lord, may we overcome every barrier that would prevent us from drawing closer to you in prayer and fellowship. May your transforming power impact our lives. May the lives of others be impacted and transformed by our witness and our service. Chester Thompson is pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Camden, Ark. He serves on the Board of Together For Hope Arkansas.

J. Livingston
JANUARY 24-31
Remnant Fellowship | Jonesboro, Georgia Commissioned June 2018 In 2016, J. Livingston was led by God to form Remnant Fellowship in Clayton, Ga. Remnant is a gathering of multi-cultural young adults and their families who seek an authentic relationship with Christ, minister to the needs of the community and help heal human hurt wherever found. The vision of Remnant Fellowship is to TYA4C: Transform Young Adults 4 Christ. Remnant Fellowship hopes to grow and minister to the greater Atlanta area, and seeks to equip those in its gathering to be more than members of a church, but disciples of Christ as they are engaged, nourished and restored. Remnant Fellowship is unconventional — but not for the sake of being unconventional. The congregation is unconventional because it is intentional about seeking an unconventional relationship with an unconventional God.

PRAYING FOR CBF MINISTRIES
Reference and Referral www.cbf.net/leaderconnect
The Reference and Referral ministry of CBF helps ministers and churches navigate transitions of leadership with practical resources and training throughout the search and call process. In addition to LeaderConnect—www.cbf.net/LeaderConnect—our high-tech database that matches CBF ministers with CBF churches, we now offer a comprehensive, step-by-step pastor search team resource entitled, “Searching for the Called.” Many churches have already given high praise for this “brilliant and refreshing” workbook! Congregations using CBF’s Reference and Referral ministry build their reputation through a hospitality-driven approach to searching that makes recruiting and retaining ministers second-nature. Likewise, CBF ministers find compassionate support as they listen for and discern God’s will. Countless phone calls, texts and emails detail the excitement and anxiety pastors balance as they move into a new place of ministry. Reference and Referral helps ease the burden of change by encouraging and coaching ministers throughout the search and call process.
Pray for: churches in the interim to: • select leaders to search teams who serve the church’s best interests. • make space for the Holy Spirit to inhabit their worshipful work. • honor the past by living boldly into their bright futures. ministers in transition to: • experience Christ’s peace that “the world does not give.” • seek clarity and discernment before making decisions. • find joy for the journey from one place to the next. the Reference and Referral ministry to: • listen, inquire, observe, and coach ministers through transitions with grace. • train the next generations of lay leaders to serve on pastor search teams. • serve churches and ministers as they discover and fulfill their God-given mission. 38 |

Over the past several years, a diverse group of teens and twenty- and thirty-somethings have been gathering in their living room, worshiping God and seeking to be community. This gathering of believers together decided to become a church in order to invite anyone to be part of a Christ-centered, God-worshiping, people-serving group of Jesus-followers. Harbor Church seeks to be a brave space for those who question and those learning to be strong in faith. Harbor seeks to be a healthy place of growth and healing for those who find themselves adrift from church. Harbor may be a home or a temporary respite from the storm. It is a place where family forms, disciples grow, and a place from which Kingdom-minded servant leaders will launch their journeys, sharing the Gospel in their daily paths of life.
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Jeremiah 17:7

Lives of Transformation, Lives of Prayers “Prayer turns ordinary mortals into men of power. It brings power. It brings fire. It brings rain. It brings life. It brings God.” Samuel Chadwick Prayer changes everything around us, and, sometimes most difficult of all, it changes us. We often confuse what God’s will is with ours. We crave to govern our processes and establish the boundaries of our comfort. However, wholehearted prayer uproots our intentions and plans and replaces them with the Lord’s. It fights the fear of transition because we know we are no longer the ones in control. Our vision is realigned with that of God. Prayer holds the keys to doors that need to be opened, transforms circumstances, and solidifies timing. Five years ago, when our church merged with the First Baptist Church in our city, it seemed unreasonable and unexpected when we had been growing in a safe and secure place. But prayer has a funny way of showing you God’s plan. Through prayer, what we thought to be absurd became the start of our broader vision, a new name, and a way to see the city in the way He wanted us to. When transformation is doused and saturated by prayer, we acquire Kingdom mindsets. Because prayer is not transactional, we do not intercede in the hope that God will do things for us. We pray because it is transformational. As Paul writes in Philippians 4: 6-7, when we bring our petitions to the Lord, He gives us assurance that guards our worldly minds and hearts in Christ. Through prayer we are transformed to be transformative for the world around us. Daniel Martino is the senior pastor of Church of the City, a multicultural church, in the heart of New London, Conn.

PRAYING FOR CBF MINISTRIES
Young Baptists www.cbf.net/youngbaptists
It doesn’t take long to envision a hopeful future for the church and our world if you spend time with college students, graduate students and seminarians serving through CBF’s Student.Go and Student.Church internship programs. Talk with them and you will learn that they are eager to have conversations about race that lead to understanding and deeper respect; they are seeking to help first generation refugees on their journeys from high school into college; they want to destigmatize mental health issues in the church and society at large; and they want to stand with women who’ve been sexually abused or made to feel less than God has made them—all in the name of Jesus. However, it also doesn’t take long to sense their anxiety and fear about how they will get from where they are to where they one day hope to be. Their current realities as students are fraught with concerns about debt, managing their families’ expectations, where to find jobs—all on top of the normal stress of class schedules and grades. They ask for your prayers for discernment, direction, patience, wisdom, strength, courage and confidence as they contemplate how God wants to use them for the sake of the world. They also need your words of encouragement, your loving smiles and hugs, and listening ears as they navigate the transitions that “adulting” requires.

Transformational Hope In Genesis, the stubborn and rebellious nature of the man Jacob is inherited by his 12 sons. These sons in turn give rise to the nation of Israel, a name which basically means “Contentious with God.” This name was still valid during the lifetime of the prophet Ezekiel — who declares grave consequences and impending destruction for the entire contentious House of Israel! Please read Ezekiel, chapter 36. In particular, verse 26 is like a flare of transformational hope: “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” The Babylonians conquered the Southern Kingdom of Judah in 586 BCE. The prophet Ezekiel was contemporaneous with the Babylonian captivity of Judah. Despite a prophecy of gloom and doom for Judah, the Lord causes Ezekiel to utter words of hope, encouragement and restoration to the people of Israel (this includes Judah). The Lord even promises to transform Israel completely: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” As humans, we tend to be contentious with God. We love to wrestle with Him and prefer not to have the Lord’s influence in our lives. Let’s become people infinitely greater than we can ever envision. The Lord Jesus Christ can transform our contentious hearts of stone into a living and beating heart of flesh. Let Jesus transform us perfectly through the power of His blood and resurrection. Amen. Gregory Long is a Truett Seminary graduate who currently lives in Flagstaff, Ariz. He and his wife, Sheila, are facilitating a new word-for-word translation from the original languages of biblical Hebrew and Greek into the Navajo language.

PRAYING FOR CBF MINISTRIES
Chaplaincy and Pastoral Counseling www.cbf.net/chaplaincy-pastoral-counseling
A common denominator for ministry care in chaplaincy and pastoral counseling is the sacred holding of another’s story. Chaplains and Pastoral Counselors meet people where they are in some of the darkest hours of their lives. The variety of placements where one encounters these stories ranges from combat zones, to retired veterans, hospitals, universities, hospices, prisons, continuing care communities, the Civil Air Patrol, and first responders such as police, firefighters and EMTs. The care offered by chaplains and counselors in these sacred spaces may address traumas, soul and moral injuries, PTSD, and sojourning in the grieving process with others. The ministry tasks performed by chaplains can include counseling, advocating, teaching, presence, rituals, sermons and funerals provided beyond the traditional settings of a local congregation. CBF chaplains serve with the U.S. Armed Services, U.S. Secret Service, Department of Veterans Affairs, Association of Professional Chaplains, Association of Clinical Pastoral Educators, College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, the COMISS Network and over 700 healthcare systems across the country.

Embodying Transformation When I think of the word “transformation,” the image that comes to mind is Zacchaeus in a tree, straining to get a glimpse of Jesus. I have always wondered what this chief tax collector’s motivation was to see Jesus. Was it sheer curiosity? Or, was his heart stirred by the stories he had heard about Jesus? We don’t really know; but what we do know is that Jesus took the time to look up into that sycamore tree, call Zacchaeus by name, invite him to come down and tell him that he would be a guest at his house. That radical response was all that Zacchaeus needed. He vowed to give half his money to the poor and repay fourfold anyone he had cheated. Jesus proclaimed salvation, sonship and transformation to one scoffed by the crowd as a traitor and sinner. This story reminds me of the work of our CBF field personnel who embody radical grace and love for the most marginalized people both locally and globally. I had the privilege of witnessing such transformation when I visited Missy Ward-Angalla as well as Jade and Shelah Acker in Kampala, Uganda. Like Zacchaeus, the refugees they serve have been rejected by society. Like Jesus, Missy, Shelah and Jade call each refugee by name, affirm that they are children of God and open the doors to provide refuge and hope. I will never forget the words of one refugee who said, “When I think of Missy, I think of God.” What I have learned is that transformation is not the work of humans, but the work of God. Embodying radical love and hospitality is our work. May God find us faithful! Shauw Chin Capps is CEO of Hopeful Horizons, a nonprofit organization that provides safety and healing for victims of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault in Beaufort, South Carolina. She served as CBF moderator from June 2017 to June 2018.

PRAYING FOR CBF MINISTRIES
Ministerial Excellence Initiative www.cbf.net/mei
The Ministerial Excellence Initiative (MEI) is designed to help pastoral and congregational leaders identify and respond to personal and congregational financial stress. Pastoral leaders cannot perform with maximum excellence when stressed about personal or congregational finances. Congregational leaders cannot make informed, strategic decisions when burdened with financial pressures. The priorities of the initiative include: • • • •
empowering pastoral leaders to minister and lead so that congregations can flourish. partnering with pastoral leaders and congregations to understand and to help to overcome the economic barriers that impede their mission. equipping pastoral leaders and congregations by providing a variety of resources, including financial education, coaching and grants. providing executive coaching and peer learning as vital components of rising above personal anxiety and stress around financial matters.
The initiative provides funding for personal debt relief for qualifying pastoral leaders. The initiative also identifies resources and provides training events to aid in managing and maintaining financial integrity for both the pastoral leader and the congregation. Our goal is to stimulate a sense of confidence and increased knowledge in the lives of our pastoral leaders and congregations. Said one pastoral leader who has been part of a learning cohort, “You have no idea of the stress that my wife and I have been carrying. I’ve felt like a failure…failing my family, failing my church, failing in my faith. You have given me a plan to move beyond personal debt! I am forever grateful to you for the non-judgmental grace you have shown me in these months.”
