Every new parent needs a diaper bag. I remember spending weeks during my first pregnancy searching for just the right one. There seemed to be lots of “must have bags” advertised online and of course, everyone had their own opinion on what I should get and what I needed to fill it with. In the end, I got what I thought was the “perfect” bag and then ended up switching to another within 3 months of being out and about with my baby. The bag I had so diligently chosen was too big and when filled was way too heavy for me AND for my stroller to support. It was a tough lesson, one of many as a new mom. Here’s what I learned: babies are full of surprises and tend to be messy and it pays to be prepared with an organized (and not overly stuffed) diaper bag packed with supplies for every eventuality, ensuring that you're not caught off guard. Below are some tips about diaper bags, how to choose one and what to keep in it. Of course, things change as your baby gets older, but if you

get into the habit of keeping an organized and well stocked bag, you will be ready for ANYTHING.

Choosing Just the Right Bag

Your bag should match your lifestyle and personal style. Many new parents opt to have different bags for different situations---work versus weekend, etc. Choosing a bag may be a personal decision, one not only dictated by style but by price as well. Think about what type of bag you currently use in your daily life. Are you more comfortable with a backpack or crossbody? Do you like a good tote bag or fanny pack? Don’t choose something that is not within your comfort zone. You can even pick up a great bag at your local thrift or consignment shop. The good news is that there is a good diaper bag in any style and at every price point available in almost every retail store or online. Below are just a few suggestions.

• This stylish Boxy Backpack is more of a saddle

bag design and is sleek and professional looking, great for the workplace and beyond, although a little pricey.

• This one from Amazon of my favorite backpack style bags. I love the large capacity and built-in organizational systems.

• The Dude Dad Diaper Bag is the perfect bag for new dads and seasoned dads alike. It comes with everything a new dad needs but when your babies are no longer babies, it’s still a sweet backpack! This bag was designed by dads for dads, and will withstand any adventure you throw at it.

Truth be told, any bag can be easily retro fitted into a diaper bag. So, if you have something at home that you love, just use organizer pouches to hold everything. You can store items by child, or by function.

Organizing Your Bag

Packing an organized diaper bag isn't just about making a checklist and shoving everything inside. You'll also need to consider where to position items for optimal organization and ease of access, as well as how to adapt to your baby's changing needs.  When considering what to put in a diaper bag and where to put it, start small and work your way up. Within each of the diaper bag compartments and pockets, organize small items such as a pacifier, bibs, and baby wipes into separate pouches or containers. This way you won't have to rifle through each pocket in search of these smaller baby essentials.  Make sure the items you will need in a hurry are located in pockets or compartments that are on the outside of the bag. Put Like with like using separate pouches or pockets for food related items and diaper changing items. Don’t forget about YOU. Your diaper bag should also have things you need on a daily basis. This may include hand sanitizer, hand cream, cosmetics, a change of shirt for YOU (again, babies are messy), a phone charger with a cord long enough to reach outlets while you are feeding your baby anywhere. Pro Tip: Don’t forget water and snacks for yourself

as well, taking care of a baby is exhausting and you will need nourishment.

Some Must Haves for any Diaper Bag:

• Diapers & wipes

• Lightweight blanket

• Spare clothing (one day outfit PLUS one sleep outfit)

• Diaper cream

• Pacifiers

• Hand sanitizer/table covers

• Resealable bags and recycled plastic grocery bags

• Snacks

• Sippy cups & plates

• Sunscreen

• Emergency information/medications

Fact: No matter how organized you are, the more you use your diaper bag, the messier and more cluttered it will get. Once a week, make a point of reviewing what you have in your diaper bag, returning everything to its allotted compartment, and restocking supplies. I used to do this on Sunday evenings, using my upcoming weekly calendar as a guide as to what I might need for the coming days. Finally, I will say this: you will inevitably find yourself in a situation where what you need is not in your bag. The important thing to do is to NOT panic and to be resourceful, flexible and to ask for help. There is always another parent around who may have just what you need in their bag, don’t be afraid to ask!

Whether you have a curious toddler or a seasoned young traveler, Asheville offers something for everyone.

Scenic Drives and Outdoor Adventures

One of the highlights of any fall trip to Asheville is the scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This iconic road offers breathtaking views of the changing leaves, with numerous overlooks where families can stop, take photos, and let the kids run around. The vibrant colors and crisp mountain air create the perfect backdrop for family memories.

For those who want to stretch their legs, Asheville

Fall Family Getaways: Discover the Magic of Asheville, North Carolina

boasts several family-friendly hikes. The Craggy Gardens Trail is a short, easy hike that rewards you with panoramic views of the mountains. Another great spot is the Asheville Botanical Gardens, where little ones can explore trails filled with native plants and flowers. If your family is up for more adventure, head to Pisgah National Forest. Here, you’ll find the picturesque Looking Glass Falls, an easy-to-access waterfall that’s a hit with kids and adults alike.

Cultural and Educational Experiences

Asheville is not just about natural beauty; it’s also a hub of culture and history. A visit to the Biltmore Estate is a must. Known as America’s largest home, the Biltmore offers a unique experience for families. Take a tour of the estate, visit the petting farm, and explore the Antler Hill Village, which features family-friendly activities and live demonstrations. The fall season adds a special charm, with the estate surrounded by stunning foliage.

Blue Ridge Parkway Tunnel

Estate

For a more hands-on experience, check out the Asheville Museum of Science. With interactive exhibits that spark curiosity and learning, it’s perfect for young minds. The museum’s “Dino Explorer” exhibit is particularly popular with little ones who love dinosaurs. (Pro Tip! Family-Friendly Accommodations

When it comes to accommodations, Asheville offers a variety of options that cater to families. Consider renting a cabin or vacation home in the mountains surrounding Asheville. Many rentals provide full kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and outdoor areas perfect for kids to play. Imagine cozying up by a fire pit in the evening or soaking in a hot tub with a view of the autumn leaves. It’s a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Enriching Activities

Asheville is known for its vibrant arts scene, and fall is the perfect time to experience it. Take the family to a local fall festival, like the Asheville Oktoberfest or the LEAF Festival. These events offer live music,

craft vendors, and a variety of kid-friendly activities, making them fun for the whole family.

For a more hands-on experience, visit the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here, you can see traditional Appalachian crafts and even participate in workshops designed for children. It’s a great way to introduce kids to the region’s rich artistic heritage.

Tips for Traveling with Little Ones

Traveling with young children can be challenging, but with a bit of preparation, your Asheville getaway can be smooth and enjoyable. Be sure to pack layers, as mountain temperatures can change quickly. Sturdy shoes are a must for walking on trails and exploring the outdoors. Don’t forget to bring your children’s favorite snacks and activities to keep them entertained on the go.

Health and safety are always a priority, especially when traveling to higher altitudes. Be sure to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and bring any necessary medications. Planning regular rest stops on your drive to Asheville can also help keep everyone comfortable and happy.

Another great travel tip is to plan your visit midweek to avoid the weekend crowds. Asheville is a popular destination, especially in the fall, so visiting on weekdays can help you enjoy a more relaxed experience at attractions and on scenic drives. Plus, you might find better rates on accommodations during the week, making your stay both peaceful and affordable.

Asheville, North Carolina, is a destination that truly shines in the fall. With its combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and familyfriendly activities, it offers the perfect setting for a memorable family getaway. Pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready to create lasting memories in this enchanting mountain town.
