Just because school is out doesn't mean the learning has to stop. Day trips to some area attractions can teach the kids a few things and help them have fun while away from the classroom. School may be out, but Schoolhouse is in! Families with newborns can start saving for college for just $29/month with a 1-Year University Plan, the Florida Prepaid College Board announced, as it opens the 2025 Open Enrollment window.

This year families with babies are eligible for a special incentive that lowers newborn plan prices and is part of Florida Prepaid’s mission to help families save for college stress-free by starting early with affordable, fixed monthly payments. The reduced prices result in savings of up to $850 per plan for a 1-Year University Plan – up to $3,400 in savings for four years.

Families can view this year’s special low prices in the Prepaid Plan online pricing calculator to determine what the various plans cost based on a child’s age. Monthly Prepaid Plan prices are the lowest when the child is the youngest, allowing families to spread out the cost of college over time in fixed payments that families can incorporate into their monthly budget.

The 1-Year University Plan covering 30 credit hours is the most affordable, and can be “stacked” over time to cover additional years. It’s a simple way to create a solid foundation for your child’s future. You can save for just one or two years, or all four years, as best fits your savings goals and budget.

Prepaid Plan prices start at $29/month for 2025 Open Enrollment

If a child attends an out-of-state college or private college, a Prepaid Plan will pay the same amount as it would pay at a public college or university in Florida. Every Prepaid Plan is protected by the State of Florida, and a child has up to 10 years after high school graduation to use the plan. Plus, if the family moves out of state, the child can return to a Florida public college or university and their Prepaid Plan qualifies them as an in-state student.

According to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, almost three-fourths of jobs by 2031 will require postsecondary education – be it a traditional four-year degree or a trade certification and training.

“There has never been a better time for families to start saving early for a child’s future,” said Kevin Thompson, Executive Director of Florida Prepaid. “What a gift to be able to secure your child's future for just $29 a month. It is a small step, but it has a lifelong impact and brings so much opportunity.”

In Science Camp, incoming 1st – 5th graders will explore agriculture from the ground up: from soil and water to plants and animals and the nutrients and products they provide. Hands-on

activities will include chemistry, macroscopic and microscopic structures, biological life cycles, and applied engineering and physics. What’s New With The Flu?

The 2025 flu season is in full swing, and CDC is reporting high levels of flu throughout most of the U.S. Flu A (H1N1 and H3N2) are the predominant strains circulating this respiratory season. No doubt you know someone (or yourself) who has had it.

Flu symptoms include sudden onset of fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, nasal congestion, sore throat and cough. In addition to flu, other viruses, such as COVID, RSV, and bacterial infections, such as strep throat or pneumonia, may have similar symptoms.

Antiviral prescription medicines may be used to treat the flu. They are most effective when taken within 48 hours of symptoms and are

typically given to patients at higher risk, such as those with chronic medical conditions, young children under 2 years old, pregnant women and those who are immunocompromised. Flu shots are still the most effective tool to protect against the flu, and it’s not too late in the season to receive it. Regular handwashing and staying home if you are sick helps in reducing the spread.

This is one of the most common questions related to the flu. And the answer is: You cannot get the flu from the flu shot! It is possible to experience some flu-like effects from receiving the shot, such as aches, runny nose and fatigue. The possible flu-like symptoms after receiving the shot should only last a few days or less.

It’s especially important for young people, the elderly and people with underlying medical issues to get the flu shot each year to prevent serious complications from contracting the flu. It’s also important to protect yourself in

order to prevent the spread of the flu virus through the community, which can cause lost productivity at school and work.

When is the Best Time of Year to Get the Flu Shot?

It’s best to get the flu shot in late September or early October before flu season strikes; however, it may be given throughout flu season. The key to the flu shot’s effectiveness, as with most immunizations, is to receive it early enough for the body’s immune system to react to the shot for immunity to the specific strains of influenza included in the shot.

2. The Living Room/Family Room:Declutter your living room by tackling the media center. Sort through DVDs, video games, and books, keeping only those you truly enjoy. Consider digitizing files or transitioning to streaming services to reduce physical clutter. Moreover, take a good look at your decor—if a piece no longer brings you joy or serves a purpose, it might be time to let it go.

3. Children’s Rooms: With kids out of school, it's an excellent time to engage them in the decluttering process. Have them sift through their toys, clothes, and crafts. Encourage them to donate any unwanted items they no longer play with or have outgrown. This not only teaches them the value of giving but also makes their room a more inviting space for play and relaxation.

4. Closets: Now is a great time to go through your wardrobe. Swap out seasonal clothing and declutter your closet. Anything you haven’t worn in the past year can often be removed. You can

designate a clothing drive box for donations, which is not only decluttering but also gives back to the community.
