What to Do When Babies Cry
Why Do Babies Cry?
All newborns cry and get fussy sometimes. It's normal for a baby to cry for 2–3 hours a day for the first 6 weeks. During the first 3 months of life, they cry more than at any other time.
New parents often are low on sleep and getting used to life with their little one. They'll quickly learn to check to see if their crying baby:
• is hungry
• is tired
• needs to be burped
• is overstimulated
• has a wet or dirty diaper
• is too hot or cold
Often, taking care of a baby's needs is enough to soothe a baby. But sometimes, the crying goes on longer.
What Is Colic?
Some babies cry a lot more than others. A baby
who cries 3 or more hours a day, 3 or more days a week, for at least 3 weeks might have colic. Usually, it starts when a baby is 2–5 weeks old and ends by the time the baby is 3–4 months old.
Colic happens to a lot of newborns. It's hard to see your baby cry so much, but colic isn't caused by anything a parent did or didn't do. The good news is babies outgrow colic.
What Can Help a Crying Baby?
You can't spoil your baby with too much attention. To soothe a crying baby:
• First, make sure your baby doesn't have a fever. In a baby, a fever is a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C). Call the doctor right away if your baby does have a fever.
• Make sure your baby isn't hungry and has a clean diaper.
• Rock or walk with the baby.
• Sing or talk to your baby.
• Offer the baby a pacifier.

• Take the baby for a ride in a stroller.
• Hold your baby close against your body and take calm, slow breaths.
• Give the baby a warm bath.
• Pat or rub the baby's back.
• Place your baby across your lap on their belly and rub your baby's back.
• Put your baby in a swing or vibrating seat. The motion may be soothing.
• Put your baby in an infant car seat in the back of the car and go for a ride. Often, the vibration and movement of the car are calming.
• Play music — some babies respond to sound as well as movement.
Some babies need less stimulation. Babies 2 months and younger may do well swaddled, lying on their back in the crib with the lights
very dim or dark. Make sure the swaddle isn't too tight. Stop swaddling when the baby is starting to be able to roll over.
What Can I Do if a Baby Won't Stop Crying?
If a baby in your care won't stop crying:
• Call a friend or relative for support or to take care of the baby while you take a break.
• If nothing else works, put the baby on their back in an empty crib (without loose blankets or stuffed animals), close the door, and check on the baby in 10 minutes. During that 10 minutes, do something to try to relax and calm down. Try washing your face, breathing deeply, or listening to music.
• Call your doctor if nothing seems to be helping the baby, in case there is a medical reason for the fussiness.
25 Things to Do Before Your Baby is Born
Time will go by so fast and your little newborn will be in your arms! Here are 25 more things to cross off your to-do list.
Pack your hospital bag.
Take a tour and pre-register with your hospital. (possibly virtual).
Make a birth plan.
Get a crib and set up your nursery.
Pre-wash baby’s clothes.
Attend Childbirth and Education classes
Choose your baby’s names. Check P.12 for ideas
Pick a birth announcement, design it and gather addresses.
Start researching breast pumps and call your insurance to find out how much they will cover.
Use your crockpot and make some freezer meals to reheat after the baby arrives.
Pack your camera and make sure the battery is charged.
Book and schedule a newborn photographer.
Have a date night with your husband before your baby arrives.
Schedule some me time pampering.
Install your car seat.
If returning to work, start researching childcare options.
If you have an older child, find a sibling education class (possibly virtual).
Also arrange childcare for siblings for when you are in the hospital.
Write down your list of people to contact once baby arrives (with phone numbers and email addresses).
Relax! Take a Nap!

No matter what, no one should ever shake a baby for any reason.
If a frustrated or angry caregiver shakes a baby, it can cause shaken baby syndrome (or abusive head trauma), when a child's brain is injured from physical abuse. This can cause permanent brain damage or death. Finding ways to ease a caregiver's stress when a baby is crying can help prevent these injuries.
What Else Should I Know?
The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome offers a prevention program, the Period of PURPLE Crying, to help parents and other caregivers understand crying and how to handle it.
All Babies Cry is a program that promotes infant soothing and ways to handle a baby's crying. The program has 4 parts:
What's normal about crying?
• Comforting your baby.
• Self-care tips for parents.
• Colic and how to cope.
• If you're worried you might hurt your baby or someone else will, call the national hotline 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453) anytime for help.
Tell anyone caring for your baby to never shake the infant. Talk about the dangers of shaking and safe ways to soothe a baby.
Keep in mind that all babies cry a lot and it will get better. The crying isn't caused by something you did or didn't do. Take care of yourself and ask for help so you can keep taking good care of your baby.

How to Choose & Use Sunscreen
This Summer (and Year-Round)
Summer’s here, and that means longer days, more time outdoors, and yes—more sun exposure. Whether you’re hitting the beach, visiting the park, or just soaking up rays in the backyard, using sunscreen properly is one of the best ways to protect your family’s skin.
Here’s your sunny-day guide to choosing the right sunscreen and using it the right way—plus a few parent-approved tips for little ones!
1. Look for Broad-Spectrum Protection
Make sure your sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, while UVB rays cause sunburn — and both contribute to skin cancer risk.
2. Go for SPF 30 or Higher
Dermatologists recommend SPF 30 or above for daily protection. If your plans include water play or hours in the sun, opt for SPF 50.
3. Consider Your Skin Type
• Sensitive skin? Go with mineral (a.k.a. physical) sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
• Breakout-prone? Choose non-comedogenic and oil-free options.
• Kids? Look for formulas labeled “pediatriciantested,” fragrance-free, and gentle on eyes.
4. Water-Resistant = Longer Lasting
Especially for pool days or sweaty summer adventures, water-resistant formulas stay put longer—but still need reapplying!
How to Use Sunscreen Effectively 1.Apply the Right Amount
You’ll need about a palmful (roughly 2 tablespoons) for a full adult body. For kids, aim to fully coat all exposed skin. A good rule of thumb: use enough to leave a visible layer before rubbing it in.
2. Timing Is Everything
Apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before heading outside to give it time to absorb and start working.
3. Reapply, Reapply, Reapply
Reapply every 2 hours — or immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. Set a reminder if you’re out having fun! Keep a travelsize bottle in your bag or car for easy access.
4. Don’t Forget the “Sneaky Spots”
Hit commonly missed areas like the ears, neck, tops of feet, scalp (or part lines!), and the back of hands.
5 . Moms, Don’t Rely on Makeup with SPF Alone
Makeup with SPF is great, but it’s usually not enough by itself. Layer it with a full-strength sunscreen underneath for real coverage.

6. Check Dates: Sunscreen can expire! Check for a date or toss if it smells or looks off.
Kid Tips: Sunscreen Without the Struggle
• Make it Fun: Let little ones “help” apply it to arms and legs.
• Use a Stick for Faces: Kids tend to tolerate sunscreen sticks better near their eyes and nose.
• Distract & Apply: Sing a song, tell a story, or give them a snack while you quickly apply.
• Dress Smart: Long-sleeved rash guards, widebrimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses = less skin to slather!
No matter where your summer takes you, a little SPF goes a long way. Whether you’re beachbound or backyard-lounging, protecting your skin is always in style. So slather it on and enjoy the sunshine safely — your skin will thank you later!

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14. With summer around the corner, now is a great time for parents to remember the importance equipping children with essential water safety skills.
Here in Florida, we lead the nation with the most drownings of all children under 18 by more than double. 79% of those children involved are under the age of 3.
Before letting your children hit the water this summer, remember these few tips to ensure it’s an enjoyable and safe experience.
NEVER SWIM ALONE.
Teach your children that they should only swim in locations where a lifeguard is on duty.
SUPERVISE YOUR CHILDREN WHENEVER THEY’RE IN WATER.
Whether it’s bath time or taking a dip in a pool or lake, make sure your children are within arm’s reach at all times.
DON’T ENGAGE IN BREATH HOLDING ACTIVITIES.
Children shouldn’t hold their breath for a prolonged amount of time while swimming, as this can cause drowning and has several other severe physical side-effects.
ENROLL YOUR CHILDREN IN WATER SAFETY OR SWIM LESSONS.
Just like teaching your children to look both ways before they cross the street, participating in formal water safety lessons teaches them an important skill. Swim Safely!

BY AMY BERGMAN
Even though the onset of “spring” doesn’t feel a whole different here in South Florida, it’s still the perfect time to refresh your home. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to begin this seasonal reset is by decluttering and organizing that notorious junk drawer. Whether it resides in your kitchen, bedroom, or home office, this drawer can often become a chaotic mess. However, I believe that junk drawers are not filled with mere junk; rather, they house the essential items we need daily, which is why I prefer to call them "utility drawers."
Utility drawers are typically located in the most accessible spot of any room, making them prone to collecting stray items that don't belong. These can range from batteries and tape to pens and notepads. While they serve a valuable purpose, their tendency to accumulate clutter can make finding what you need a frustrating task. So, let’s dive into how to transform your cluttered junk drawer into an organized utility drawer.
Step 1: Clear it Out - Start by emptying the entire drawer onto a clean surface. This will allow you to see everything you’ve been storing in there. As
you remove each item, take a moment to assess its usefulness. Immediately throw out any trash and set aside items that you know “belong somewhere else”.
Step 2: Sort and Categorize - Next, group similar items together. Create categories like office supplies, batteries, tools, and odds-and-ends. This step will help you determine what you actually use regularly and what might be unnecessary clutter.
Step 3: Purge the Unnecessary - Take a hard look at your sorted items. Are there duplicates? Expired batteries? Broken items? Be ruthless in your decision-making. If you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t serve a specific purpose, let it go!
Step 4: Choose Storage Solutions - Once you have your items sorted and purged, it’s time to decide how to organize them. Your goal is to ensure that everything has a designated space within the drawer. Consider using small bins or dividers to keep similar items together. This way, you’ll easily be able to find what you need when you need it. Maybe a drawer liner or glue dots will help to keep those bins from sliding around.
Step 5: Label - If you’re using bins or compartments, labeling them can save time and eliminate confusion. Whether you opt for simple post-it notes or a label maker, clear labels help everyone in the household know exactly where to find items or return them after use.
Step 6: Maintain Your Organized Utility Drawer
Once your drawer is organized, make a habit of tending to it regularly. A quick check every few weeks will keep clutter at bay. As new items enter your home, take a moment to decide where they belong, helping your utility drawer remain efficient and functional.
