Check out these easy party planning tips to help make planning your child’s birthday party as easy and stress free as 1, 2, 3!
Start with an invite list. It dictates everything: How large a venue, what kind of theme or activities you pick, etc. What about siblings? Before age 7, inviting siblings is a nice gesture if you have the space and funds. However, other parents understand your predicament firsthand. If it’s not feasible, don’t be afraid to say no. If childcare is an issue for the sibling perhaps offer to have them drop the birthday guest off.
If your child’s friend list is a mile long consider making it Just Family - Don’t be afraid to make your child’s party just family plus a few friends.
Easy as 1...2...3 Party Planning Tips
Skip the paper invite. Everyone is online these days (even grandmas have email and Facebook!) Utilize any of the many free services out there or create a private Facebook event!
Get creative. Regardless of your theme, there are lots of places to go for inspiration including Pinterest. By the time your child is 3 or so, they’ll have lots of input on what they want too maybe too much input!
Skip the Goodie Bags! There! We said it! We love the generous spirit behind goodie bags and party favors, but we could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if that) and then stuffed in a drawer. How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out
We offer appointments with board-certified physicians, diagnostics and imaging services, rehabilitation and walk-in urgent care (services vary by location).

copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep?
Food- Offer a variety of foods. Ordering a few pizzas takes care of the main course, but think about including fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, or popcorn for snacking. Serve food in single serving containers (not group bowls) to keep germs at bay.
Visit the venue- Plan a visit to your venue if you are throwing it outside your home before the party so you can scope it out and anticipate any issues.
Instead of lugging a trunk full of gifts suggest NO GIFTS - If you are overflowing with toys, try something new, host a book exchange. On the invite, ask that everyone bring a book in lieu of a gift, which they will then exchange for a new one.
Keep it short! You need one or two activities that will take you to cake time! Party experts recommend 90 minutes for children under 5. Two hours for ages over 5. Set an End Time. Always err on the side of a shorter party, and note a specific end time on the invitation. As kids get older, most parents will expect to drop off their kids and pick them up at the end of the party. If you’d like some grown up assistants, be sure to arrange for them ahead of time.
Don’t Over-Schedule Activities. Keep the party simple and allow some free play time. Too many planned activities can overwhelm kids and cut down on the fun, so stick to one or two main games or crafts, and leave room for spontaneous play.
Take a lot of Photos. When the party is done all you have left is pictures. Make sure to designate someone to or hire a photographer like our friend Lynn at Lynn Studios (www.lynnstudios1.com).
Write thank-you notes. While sending email invitations is standard these days, most guests still appreciate a good oldfashioned physical thank-you card— particularly one written by the birthday child. It can even be a picture if your child can’t write yet. Can’t stand the thought of more wasted paper inevitably ending up in the trash? Send a personalized thank-you
email and include pictures of the party.
Consider Throwing Parties Every Few Years
- Everyone should feel special on her birthday, but there’s no rule that says your kid has to have an elaborate party every year.
Planning a birthday party doesn’t have to make you want to pull your hair out! It also helps to connect with the right vendors to make sure your party goes off without a hitch! Check out Page 14 for PB Parenting’s bi-annual party planning guide which is also online all year long at pbparenting.com.

Don’t forget to tell them you saw their listing in Party Planning Guide
BY AMY BERGMAN
Recently, I was asked to speak to a group of parents from across the country, via zoom, about creating peace in the home. I shared some of my best decluttering and organizing tips and tricks with them. At the end of the presentation, of course, I left plenty of time for questions and conversation. In the back of my mind, I had anticipated some of what that they would ask. I was not surprised that the very first question was, “how do I get my kids to put away their toys? “
I’ve heard this question before from parents as we worked together to tidy up their homes. I have found it quite common for parents to feel completely overwhelmed by the amount of kids’ stuff in their homes and feeling completely unsupported by their own children who are the ones creating the chaos and the mess.
10 ways to get your kids to put away their toys:
1. Make it a routine: Have kids put their toys away at bedtime to help them get used to the routine.
2. Make one specific request at a time, such as "Please put your blocks back in the bin on the shelf." After your child has finished one task, then you can request that your child puts a different
toy away.
3. Rotate toys: Sort similar toys into piles and store them away for a period of time. Not everything needs to be out all the time.
4. Get kids involved: Ask kids to choose their favorite toys and help with storage.
5. Implement a one in, one out rule: When kids get a new toy, they have to get rid of one (donate, share with neighbor, sell).
6. Make giving a part of family life: Talk to kids about ways to give, and ask for their help. Only donate toys that are safe, clean, and not broken.
7. Avoid threats: Threats like "If you don't put all these toys away, I am throwing them in the garbage" can backfire.
8. Be consistent with your expectations, and if possible, see that all caregivers (babysitters, relatives, etc.) are consistent too.
9. Use baskets and trays that are adequate in size and easily accessible. Toys and materials need to easily fit in the baskets and trays. Toddlers can struggle to pack things away neatly, the baskets and trays needs lot of room for the materials to fit, otherwise I find it frustrates the toddler.
10. Set your child up for success. Make it easy for
them to put their toys away (can they reach the storage area?). Make sure there is a place for everything and that the child knows where everything goes. Create age-appropriate labels for assigned homes, younger children who aren’t reading yet can use photo labels as visual cues. If your child responds well to positive feedback, try creating a reward system.
Of course, different strategies work for each child and age has a lot to do with it. However, learning to tidy up at a young age can help children develop important skills and behaviors, including:
• Responsibility: Children learn to be responsible for their environment and for contributing to the family.
• Independence: Tidy up time can help children feel independent and develop pride in their work.
• Organization: Children learn how to organize and put things away.
• Time management: Children learn how to manage their time.
• Social skills: Children learn how to communicate, negotiate, and work as a team.
• Self-confidence: Children can develop selfconfidence and feel competent when they contribute to family life.
• Real-life skills: Children learn skills that they can use in their adult lives, such as cleaning, preparing meals, and gardening.
There are plenty more ways to get kids to put away their things, and I hope some of these reallife strategies work for your family. XOXO, Amy

Showstopping Cookies with a Crunch
Sweet treats are a favorite food, especially when they have a unique or unusual twist that makes them stand out from the crowd. When a dessert isn’t the classic chocolate or vanilla flavor, it can pique eaters’ interest. Cupcakes, macaroons and even pies have some intense flavors, however, it’s hard to top the delightful taste of these Fresh Ginger Cookies.
They are sweet and sugary with the perfect amount of ginger. Baked until golden brown, this dessert is a showstopper for family events and celebrations alike. Even the little ones will love to munch on this sweet treat with fresh, appealing flavor.
In a mixing bowl, mix flour, baking soda, ground ginger, ground cinnamon and salt until combined.
In a separate bowl, add butter, sugar and brown sugar then beat until fluffy. Add an egg and fresh
ginger then beat the mixture again. Gradually add dry ingredients to this mixture until combined.
In a small bowl, add sugar. With a spoon, scoop out a small portion of dough and roll it into a small ball before rolling in sugar.
Repeat with the remaining dough then arrange balls on a cookie sheet and bake for 14 minutes until golden brown. Make sure your little ones wait to enjoy until the cookies have cooled completely.
From parties to picnics, these cookies can be a hit. They are simple to make, don’t take much time to bake and are unique enough to bring along to nearly any occasion. With ground and fresh ginger, these cookies are equally as appetizing as they are satisfying and sure to turn heads in the kitchen.
