Pregnant Pause -
Documenting Moms-to-Be Through Photography Article and Photos by Rhea Lewis
It’s official
- America is obsessed with pregnancy. A mini baby boom is under way, and it shows - from the covers of the tabloids speculating about the latest celeb “baby bump” to the growing availability of chic maternity wear. We see baby bumps everywhere, celebrating Mama’s shape for all to see! The bigger the bump the better and Mama’s are regarded as glowing, not “fat”. Maternity photography is an extension of that. It’s also a chance for a mom to feel beautiful and relaxed before she gives birth. What can a mom-to-be expect at a maternity photo shoot? It depends on the photographer, but expect all eyes to be on that burgeoning belly and as full-term as possible. Shoots can be done in-home, at a private studio or on location. A maternity photo shoot can be a great chance for a mom-to-be to put aside body image issues and focus on the power of her pregnant body. While hiring a professional photographer may not always be an option, here are some simple ideas that may get your creative juices flowing. Bring a close friend, grab a camera and go ahead and capture this magical time in your life. Simple and Classic - For a simple shoot, wear a top that is tight-fitting around your belly. Go for a basic white or black tube top and pair them with jeans or comfortable stretch pants. The aim is to accentuate your
beautiful belly. You can have a black and white shoot for a classic and dramatic touch or make it a little playful with colored shots. Get a nice manicure for those tight shots in which you will be holding your belly. Outdoor Shoot - For outdoor locations such as beaches and parks, your clothing should also be comfortable and practical. Avoid heavy fabrics that could hamper your mobility. Wear stretch pants, jeans, simple tops or dainty dresses. Again, try to wear tight fitting tops to accentuate your belly. You can have a silhouette shot by the sunset or a lazy stroll by the garden. Just take advantage of scenic shots such as gardens, sunsets, oceans, lakes, and resorts but never forget that main star of the shoot is still your belly. Artistic Shots -For more artistic shots, you can try body paint. Try a soaking in a tub of shallow water with just floating flowers and some white cloth covering you and your belly exposed. For a fun and quirky approach, wear colorful costumes. Be a fairy, a goddess, a queen, or wear funny statement t-shirts so the message is stretched comically. Exercise While Pregnant! By Meghan Buser
T he days are long gone from when our parents were pregnant and they
were discouraged from exercising throughout their pregnancy. In addition to maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy, there are many more benefits to exercising while pregnant that will benefit you and your baby. You will have more energy - Naturally pregnancy can cause you to lose your breath just standing there doing the dishes. Working out can increase you cardiovascular system, helping you not be so out of breath every second of the day. By getting yourself up and active you are not glued to the couch and constantly have that exhausted feeling. It’s all about motivation. Getting to the workout is half the battle! Your body will adjust to pregnancy better, reducing some discomfortExercise increases circulation throughout your body and stretches out muscles and ligaments. Regular walks, swimming and physical activity will improve this circulation helping you cope with the ever changing body pregnancy causes. Prepare your body for child birth Improving your cardio will help you improve your breathing which will help during delivery. Also strong muscles will help you push and give you an increased endurance throughout that challenging time.
12 March 2012 | PB Parenting |
Your body will bounce back faster after delivery - The recommended amount of weight to gain during pregnancy is 2535 lbs so if you exercise regularly during pregnancy, chances are you will not exceed that. You will keep a toned figure rather than letting it turn to mush and a majority of that weight will come off once the baby is born. When choosing an exercise program during your pregnancy, stick to what you were already doing before. If you were an avid runner, you can continue to run. If you went to spinning classes regularly, continue to do so. Continue to exercising at a moderate level keeping your heart rate around 140 BPM or do not exceed a point where you are having trouble talking and breathing at the same time. If you are starting new to an exercise program when pregnant, consult with your doctor first and get some advice and tips from a fitness professional. While you are pregnant is as good of time as any to start getting fit and healthy for you and your baby! Your body will thank you when the pregnancy is over! Meghan Buser is a certified and insured Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor with 12 years of experience. She has two children ages 4 and 2. Moms FIT 4 Fun not only has been a success in helping moms get their better- than-pre-baby body’s back but a great way for the children to see first-hand that health and fitness are an important part of their mommy’s life.

Q&A
Frequently Asked Questions Baby’s Gums, Teeth & Feet
Q. How do I protect my baby’s teeth from cavities? A. Babies are born without the bacteria that cause caries - the disease that leads to cavities. They get it from the spit that is passed from their caregiver’s mouth to their own. Caregivers pass on these germs by sharing saliva - sharing spoons, by testing foods before feeding it to babies and other activities where saliva is shared. Establish a bedtime routine that does not involve using the bottle filled with milk or juice to soothe baby to sleep. Q. How do I take care of my baby’s gums and teeth? A. Before your baby’s first tooth becomes visible in the mouth, you should wipe the mouth every day with a soft, moist washcloth. As soon as teeth become visible in the mouth brush the teeth with a small soft bristle toothbrush that contains a pea-sized smear of toothpaste. You should brush your baby’s teeth at least twice each day - once in the morning and once at night. The most important brushing is before bedtime. Q. When should I schedule my child’s first visit? A. Schedule your first dental visit with a pediatric dentist when your child is one year old. Remember - first tooth, first birthday, first dental visit! Dr. Michael J. Roseff, DMD, is a pediatric dentist at Roseff Pediatric Dentistry. He received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL., and received his postgraduate training at Indiana University/Riley Children’s Hospital for Children in Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Brett Fried, DPM South Florida Foot & Ankle
Q. How can I take care of my baby’s feet? A. Caring for your baby’s feet is easy but must not be ignored. Trim your child’s toenails with baby nail clippers fairly often, making sure to cut straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Also, be sure to thoroughly dry your baby’s feet after a bath, especially between the toes to prevent breakdown of your baby’s sensitive skin. Q. When should I put my baby in their first pair of shoes? A. Your child’s first pair of shoes should be purchased when he/she begins to walk. Shoes are not necessary prior to that. Allowing your youngster to go barefoot or to wear only socks helps the foot to grow normally and to develop its musculature and strength. Of course, when walking outside or on rough surfaces, babies’ feet should be protected in lightweight, flexible footwear made of natural materials. (Example Pediped’s*– these soft, shoes provide a safe environment for tiny toes while allowing plenty of room for their foot growth.) After that, the child should be measured every couple of months to insure proper shoe size is obtained and utilized. * These products have been awarded the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA’s) Seal of Acceptance.
Dr. Brett Fried, DPM is a podiatrist at South Florida Foot & Ankle Center. He attended medical school at New York College of Podiatric Medicine, Manhattan NY, followed by extensive surgical training in both New York and Georgia.

Baby’s Here!
Now what do I do? By Sara Tomaselli
While bringing a baby home is
wonderful and joyful, it can also be stressful and overwhelming at times. The only consistent thing with new moms and babies is just that—new. It’s all new and while it is exciting, it can also be frustrating and discouraging at times. Here are just a few tips that every new mama should know before she brings her bundle home: 1. You CANNOT spoil a newborn! Respond to them promptly when they cry--it’s their first experience with communication and they need to know mommy listens and cares! 2. Invest in a sling. There are many models, so find the one that suits you and your little one and wear your baby close all day. 3. Set up a nursing station. Get snacks, the tv remote or a good book, every boppy and comfy pillow in the house, and a big cup of water and camp out. Many moms have told me that for the first week or so, they feel like a milk maid! Rest assured, it is short lived and gets the breastfeeding relationship started out on a good foot! 4. Keep a stash of clean burp cloths in every room. 5. Sleep when the baby sleeps. Even if you “can’t take naps,” you’ll learn. 6. Involve older siblings in baby care when they are happy to help--don’t force it if they would rather play with something else.
14 March 2012 | PB Parenting |
7. Dads need baby time, too! Pass baby off and take a hot shower or just flop on the bed for 20 minutes to regain peace of mind and have a “me” moment. 8. Don’t be discouraged if your baby doesn’t sleep in the crib all night right off the bat. You and baby may be more comfortable closer together. Look into arms reach co-sleepers and snuggle nests as safe alternatives. 9. Accept help. If someone wants to make your family dinner or fold your laundry, take them up on it! There are few times in life when you get the offer! 10. Count diapers! Most women are afraid of breastfeeding cause there is no way to measure how much baby is getting! But, remember--what goes in must come out! The basic rule is one wet per day of age, and then 5-6 a day after a week. As long as baby is peeing, pooping, and gaining weight, there is no problem with your supply! 11. Prepare yourself for fussy times. Every newborn tends to have a time of day that he/she just is not a fan of. Most babies choose the early evening. Instead of praying this won’t happen and stressing out when it does, prepare for the fussiness. Come up with a plan that works for both of you; Play music, put baby in a sling, go for a stroll outside or bounce baby on your knees, whatever works! If you are prepared, you will stay calm and baby will feed off your mood!
12. Take care of yourself! Make sure mama has time to eat, stay hydrated and rest so she can take care of baby to the best of her abilities.
23. When in doubt, burp it out. Patting a baby’s back can go a long way! If nothing else is working, throw him on your shoulder, walk around and pat his back.
13. Share feelings and emotions with someone close to you. Hormones are on rampage after birth, so talk, find support and keep lots of tissues around!
24. Live in the moment. Laundry will be there tomorrow, but your four-day old will only be a four-day old today.
14. Travel systems can be bulky. If you want to get out of the house and go shopping, put baby in a sling--it’s compact, keeps strangers and added germs from getting too close and opens up more cart space for more things! 15. Consider cloth diapers! They are cheaper and cuter! 16. Nurse more frequently during the day. You’ll get longer stretches at night. 17. Enjoy it. The newborn stage feels never ending when you’re in it, but in a few short months baby will sleep through the night and you’ll miss your midnight party sessions.
25. Show gratitude to Daddy. The best gift parents can give their child is to love each other. Remind him that he is important and help him discover his daddy role! Let him figure things out his own way and don’t be afraid to trust him with baby for a little while. Daddy one-on-one time is so special. Sara Tomaselli of Pampered Mama has worked with many families and has helped with everything from basic baby care to breastfeeding help and education to folding laundry. As a doula, Sara not only offers practical help, but also lends a hand in friendship, emotional support, and nonjudgemental care. She is completing her training as a postpartum doula . 18. Don’t go overboard buying clothes if you can help it; it only makes for a bigger heap of laundry. 19. If your baby is a light sleeper, consider a sound machine. The white noise reminds baby of the womb and makes them feel cozy and safe. It also blocks out additional noise. Use it for distinct nap times and night time to get your little one used to bed time. 20. Feed on demand. Baby’s bodies are constantly changing and needing different things. A schedule is unrealistic and stressful. Don’t watch the clock, watch your baby and follow their cues! 21. Join a mom’s group or a breast-feeding support group. It’s a great way to reach out to other people going through the same things you are and makes you feel like a normal human again.
The LATCH system makes it easier to be sure your child’s car seat is installed correctly every time. Just clip it to the lower anchors, attach the top tether, and pull the straps tight. To find out more, visit safercar.gov.
