Our week away seems like a distant memory already. A bonus was the area did not suffer from the humidity as we do here so the heat was much more bearable. We were regularly asked by Spanish people there (we were in an area with very few foreigners) what Brexit and Boris was all about but really didn't know what to say apart from we are as baffled as they are right now. Now the heat has turned up a notch you can't get me out of the pool and the dogs have even taken to jumping onto the top step to cool off. I really would like to find a way to get the PC set up so I can sit on the top step of the pool to work. In our town no construction work can be carried out during August but honestly, the noise some of our neighbours are making at all hours could beat any jack hammer. I can sleep through anything so it is not bothering me but it does seem to be that year on year people have less respect for others. I'm not one to spoil anyone's fun but respect really does seem to be lacking a lot these days. Oh no I'm sounding like my grandmother.... 'When I was young.......' Keep cool and stay calm, normal service will resume shortly...

PURI Popular across India, puri is deep fried unleavened bread, eaten for breakfast, as a snack or an accompaniment to savoury and sweet dishes. They tend to be served on special occasions such as weddings and religious ceremonies, but in the UK they can be found in a number of curry houses as aloo, choley or prawn puris. Ingredients 200g chapatti/ wholemeal flour 200ml cold water Pinch of salt Oil for deep frying Time: 25 Minutes. Makes: 15. Recipe · In a mixing bowl place the flour, salt and add half of the water. · Using your fingers knead into a dough; add more water when needed until it becomes flexible enough to roll. Knead to form a smooth, medium-hard dough. · Cover and leave to rest at room temperature for 5-10 minutes. · Knead the dough and divide the dough into 15 equal parts. Coat the palms of your hand with a bit of veg oil, this will stop the dough from sticking and make it easier to roll out. · Take each ball and roll between your palms, until the balls are smooth and without cracks. Apply gentle pressure to flatten. To stop the dough from sticking, lightly coat the dough ball with a bit of oil. · Using a rolling pin roll into a circle until the disc is 4 inches in diameter. · In a large pan/ wok heat the oil until hot. Lift the puri and gently slide it down and into the hot pan. It will sink to the bottom and gradually rise to the surface. Use a slotted spoon/ fish slice to lightly press until the puri puffs up. Turn it over, for a further 3 seconds. Lift and drain the puri and place on a kitchen towel. Cook the rest. Serve with your favourite curry. · Cooked they can be stacked and wrapped in a clean tea towel. Si señor! Spain is Nº1 for Quality of Life In the annual survey conducted by HSBC Expat Explorer for 2019 Spain has been ranked the fourth best country in the world for expatriates to live in. This is good news as, despite the continuing saga surrounding BREXIT, Spain has risen from thirteenth place in 2018 to fourth place in 2019, rising 9 places, leaving it behind Switzerland (1), Singapore (2), and Canada (3), and just ahead of New Zealand (5). HSBC´s ranking is based on 15 criteria in three categories: Living, Aspiring, & Little Expats (kids). Overall Living Spain was top however, job opportunities meant it did not fare so well in the “aspiring” category. Spain comes top of the class (1st) for quality of life, and bottom of the class (33rd) for career progression. It’s a familiar story that reflects the experiences of many expats who end up returning to the U.K or start to commute as and when necessary. With some notable exceptions like Inditex (Zara), the Spanish corporate culture is very insular with the top jobs being reserved for loyal locals. Unlike in the UK, where corporations are much more open to foreign talent, that would be unheard of in Spain. On the career front, at least Spain scores highly (3rd) for work / life balance. Your career might not take off, but at least you’ll get lots of days off, with something like 14 bank holidays a year (compared to 8 in the UK), most of them conveniently on a Thursday or Tuesday so you can turn it into a long weekend with Friday or Monday off, something known locally as a puente, or bridge. When any work gets done I often wonder with puentes coming around almost every other week at least somewhere in Spain, and the kid’s home from school yet again. France and Portugal, traditionally Spain’s biggest competitors as an expat destination in Europe, didn’t shine last year. France was in 17th place, down 7, and Portugal isn’t even ranked in the top 30. The UK is in 27th place, down 7 from 20th last year, and Ireland is in 14th place, up 3 places in a year. So, despite the regular grumblings I hear on the Costa Blanca we should just reflect on the fact that we live and enjoy the Nº1 place in the world for quality of life! If you have not moved here yet… then give us a call and we will build you a quality home for a Spanish quality of life! Contact us on 618 084 156.

Have you had one of these at the bottom of your pool? The large black spiders are back in the pools. Pleasingly this type of arachnid is harmless and only appears in the summer season, but it certainly can put the shivers into those with arachnophobia! They are especially found in countryside houses where because of the summer heat they come out of hiding and go looking for sources of water. Hence why many are found in swimming pools, usually at the bottom, appearing to be still and lifeless. But in fact they are not always dead; sometimes if you lift one out, and put it onto the ground to ‘dry out’ you may find that a couple of hours later he or she may have wandered off! Although these spiders are part of the tarantula family, they are not dangerous. Yes they can give a sharp bite with their chelicerae (their mouthpart structure, rather like teeth) if they are surprised or bothered, and the bite will likely be annoying and possibly cause some inflammation. However, despite their rather menacing black and hairy appearance, and being a bit of a pain because they occasionally need to be fished out of the pool, they are actually quite useful in houses because of their diet of insects and mites. To put your mind at ease even more, in Spain there are more than 1,700 species of spider, of which only 4 are even potentially dangerous to humans. These are The Black Widow spider, the Mediterranean Tarantula, the Brown Recluse spider and the Mediterranean Funnel Web spider. These can all deliver a nasty bite, but none of them are fatal to humans. So here at Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea we are not really expecting to receive any calls about anyone needing emergency care due to spider bites. But we are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year for any other serious medical emergencies. We operate a fleet of ambulances akin to mobile intensive care units throughout most of Costa Blanca North, including most of the inland areas. Accidents and emergencies do happen, and you never know when you may need our ambulance services, whether at home, or away from home. Membership is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. Walk Your Way Well by Niamh O'Sheehan We are in the throes of those long, lazy, hazy summer days and I’ll admit it, when it comes to forgetting my exercise regime I’m as guilty as the next person. In this weather, my daily walking plans go right out the window with my Sunday roast dinner. All routines bow down to the inevitability of the heat and the crowds, and like our Spanish neighbours we have to adjust our rhythms of life to some extent just to get by. The summer months can put a notable strain on the most devoted person’s training and fitness aspirations. Let’s face it, it’s simply too hot to contemplate tackling a mountain trail. Even walking the dog in July and August can become too much like a chore. My four legged little friend Trixie gets a quick spin first thing in the morning and a rapid run round before we go to bed. She doesn’t complain much about the neglect as she quite enjoys spending her days sensibly sprawled on the ceramic floor tiles keeping cool. The problem is, if we completely stop all our exercise during the summer months we will lose our hard earned muscle tone, put on unwanted kilos and all this can possibly affect our health detrimentally. It sets us back… all that hard work in the cooler months wasn’t just about our ‘beach bodies’, it was about feeling strong and well and good about ourselves, which is a life-long project. So, this month I’d like to discuss some of the options we could consider to try to keep us moving during the hot weather.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but doesn’t it make perfect sense to head to the beach? There is something empowering about the simple act of walking barefoot along the shore. Connecting with nature at a base level. Feeling the sand between our toes, and the refreshing waves cooling and tickling our feet. And here’s the best news: Sand provides resistance, so walking on it - especially barefoot - requires more energy, while strengthening all your muscles between your feet and back, particularly in your calves, quadriceps and buttocks. Because of this muscle engagement, experts say you can burn twice as many calories walking on the sand. Why not don your bathing suit and combine your sunbathing session with your daily exercise, to give you the tanned and toned look you’ve always dreamt of? I apologise, I’m getting carried away. Like I said, it’s not about your beach body, it’s about being well and happy. But I do become ever so excited about my sandy, summer walks. Did I mention how convenient it is to cool down by taking a dip along the way? Sounds tempting, right! Grab your phone and make a date with a friend right now. Or just drop what you are doing and head for the coast. Grasp this moment to have an hour or two just for you. Inhale that clean and invigorating ozone-infused sea air. Invest in your health, and embrace the glorious summer season. One other suggestion I have for everyone this month is to walk from dark to dawn. Why not make this your August challenge? If you live on the Spanish coast it’s easy to adopt a bit of a siege mentality during the summer months as the hordes invade - we know it’s the cost of living in paradise year round, but it’s far too easy to hide away and batten down the hatches, longing for September and the chance to reclaim your town. Instead, enjoy the fascinating discovery that nobody gets up early on holiday. Make that your time. Even if you live in a heavily populated area there is usually a strangely quiet time where the rest of the world is resting. Set the alarm and get up in the dark, it’s beautifully cool then too. Walk your way into another day as the sun rises with a personal welcome just for you; with great promise and hope. Then as the tourists start to descend with their inflatables and umbrellas mid morning, you can retreat feeling great, and grab a siesta later on. WalkingWord: Suncream! Even early or late, don’t forget to protect yourself. It’s easy to overlook, especially on a walk that starts before the sun is up, but ends with it blasting down on you. TechnoTip: If you use an app to track your distances or calorie count don’t forget to reset your settings depending on the terrain you are tackling. Beach, flat or mountainous terrain are three very different challenges. And if you want to catch the sunrise, remember it shifts by a few minutes each day… Google is your friend. Hit the beach around 45 minutes earlier, if you want to walk from dark to light.

“This has been a life changing experience. I wish I had known about Frank 20 years ago.”

Many men begin to lose their hair at an early age. Whatever the reason for the loss, whether it is hereditary, or through an accident or illness, or through anxiety and stress, the hair loss can be a minor, or indeed very major, problem for some men. At Mimis Kru our resident hair growth expert, Frank, is your answer! Frank offers a service for anyone experiencing concerns to do with hair loss and baldness. Of course hair loss and baldness is in no way exclusive to men; women can, and often do, suffer from this condition as well. In some hair loss cases it may be that in fact there are plenty of healthy hairs there, it is just that the hairs are extremely “thin” and their appearance needs to be thickened. Other cases might be much more about “prevention” of any further hair loss by using special prevention products now available on the market. Every person is different, and hence every hair loss case is different. So, the first stage is to establish the cause of the hair loss. Frank will use a special high definition microcamera and perform an analysis of your scalp and hair. This is called a capilloscopy camera, and it will detect and show up all hair (and skin) problems straight away. The procedure is completely painless, it will take about an hour, and once the cause of the problem is identified Frank will be able to offer you a solution. Medical knowledge about hair loss has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Frank is able to advise on products which cleanse the hair follicles and stimulate hair growth, and for more advanced cases there are professional solutions using natural hair replacement. The gentleman photographed is an actual client of Frank’s. Over the years the client had tried expensive inferior options that didn’t work and gave him absolutely no confidence. Frank is pictured fitting the gentleman with a natural hair replacement solution. It behaves naturally, and as you can see from the final photograph it is completely impossible to tell that all of the hair is not his own. For this reason this client of Frank’s says “This has been a life changing experience. I wish I had known about Frank 20 years ago”. Take the first step to overcome your concerns to do with hair loss and baldness. Call Mimis Kru now on 96 579 3584 and book your appointment with Frank. We've all heard about it, but what does the UV Index level actually mean? More and more the Radio and TV stations are telling us about "Today's UV Index level", and sometimes it is available as an hourly forecast as well. But every year here at Dr Poole's surgery in Jåvea we still treat a number of serious sunburn cases. Is it a case of people not understanding the UV Index? Or of not understanding the SPF levels of sun-creams? Or is it that some people are more vulnerable than others? Or is it the simple over-confidence of some people who think that sunburn won't happen to them or their children? Usually sunburn is mild and short-lived. But in reality it is important to try and avoid it because there is a proven direct link of the increased risk of developing skin problems in later life, such as ageing and wrinkling, DNA damage, skin cancer, as well as eye damage such as cataracts. The ultraviolet index (or UV Index) is an international standard measurement It tells us the strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet (UV) radiation at a particular place and time. The scale was developed by Canadian scientists in 1992, and then adopted and standardised by the UN's World Health Organisation and World Meteorological Organisation in 1994. The UV Index is designed as an open-ended linear scale, directly proportional to the intensity of UV radiation that causes sunburn on human skin. For example, if a light-skinned individual (without sunscreen) begins to sunburn in 30 minutes at UV Index 6, then that individual should expect to sunburn in about 15 minutes at UV Index 12 – twice the UV, so twice as fast to sunburn.

Whilst a small amount of UV radiation actually has health benefits, Public Health Organisations recommend that people protect themselves (for example, by applying sunscreen to the skin and wearing a hat and sunglasses) if they spend substantial time outdoors when the UV Index is 3 or higher. Alongside is the full table Index guide with the recommendations for protection. Source: Wikipedia and other sources. Seeking medical advice Seek immediate medical advice if you feel unwell or are concerned about your sunburn, particularly if you're burnt over a large area or have blistering or swelling of the skin. Or if you have the sunburn symptoms of chills, a high temperature (fever) of 38ยบC (100.4ยบF) or above, or have dizziness, headaches or are feeling sick (these are symptoms of heat exhaustion). And in particular you should seek medical advice if a young child or baby has sunburn, as their skin is particularly sensitive. As well as being an International Master in Cosmetic Surgery, Dr Poole is a Family GP. His clinic is called Clinica El Arenal, and is situated at Avenida Arenal 2, Jรกvea. Telephone 865 525 504. Roundabout thinking on cars CAR manufacturing rivals Ford and Volkswagen have decided to team up on technology and share the science on self-driving and electric vehicles and reduce costs as they look to the future. Ford will share its self-driving research and VW return the favour with its electrical know-how; potentially saving billions in the lab and using investment with more efficiency. It’s sensible stuff. Without wanting to put the brakes on the great leap forward; but has anyone thought about what happens when these cars without a human at the wheel come across a roundabout in Spain? They are chaos enough in 2019 to navigate with drivers still in employ!

El Campo Restaurant Traditional Italian Kitchen Our desire at El Campo Restaurant is to conjure up the real taste of Italy on your plate. We achieve this by our chefs using a lot of "Amore". They pack a pinch of it into every single one of our culinary delicacies – be it in the homemade pasta, the exquisite antipasti or the seductive Dolci. Fresh pasta is tradition and novelty at the same time! Without any doubt homemade pasta is the undisputed protagonist in our kitchen. We have the pleasure of making it fresh, and you choose the type of pasta and your favourite sauce. Our restaurant is located in a beautiful flower decorated garden. From the atmosphere, to the menu, to our friendly waiters, who serve the hospitable and cheerful Italian specialties, everything is warm, authentically decorated, and prepared with love. Here you can taste the most traditional dishes of our Italian kitchen, as well as enjoy the peace with a glass of wine. Children, as well, should discover the flavours and diversity of Italian cuisine. We want them to experience the type of cooking traditionally prepared by the “Nonna”. That’s why everything is at half price for them, up to the age of 12 years. Drinks are excluded but we offer each child a free glass of homemade ice tea. Because rather than the usual coca cola or pop containing lots of additives and "E numbers", to us it is important that they enjoy something refreshing, healthy and natural. El Campo Restaurant is conveniently located just 5 minutes away from Jávea Arenal beach at Travessia de les Cansalades, 134, Jávea. We have a large car park of our own, so no struggling to find a parking place! We are pleased to hold a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2019 and we are open every day apart from Sunday. To make a reservation please call 961 134 466 or email bookings@elcampo.casa. Better still if you reserve online at: https://elcampo.casa/reservation you will get a glass of Cava for free. Craft demonstrations return to Hondón de las Nieves On 9 and 10 August Hondón de las Nieves will hold for the sixth time an original arts and crafts fair. Between twenty and thirty craft people are expected and not only will they show (and sell) what they have made, you can also watch most of them at work, ask questions on techniques, tools and materials, and quite a few speak some English. There will be people working with leather, wood and paper, people modelling clay, painting or making macramé and jewellery. A blacksmith will set up a complete workshop and show many sculptures he has made and a friendly potter invites everybody to turn their own little bowl on her wheel. All are people who love their work and want you to share the pleasure. There will also be workshops for children and a few stalls with traditional delicacies: Felipe sells pan de higos, made of dried figs and almonds and will show you how arrop i tallaetes is made, a Valencian speciality made of grape syrup and pieces of pumpkin. Quite a few local people participate in the fair and a group of local youngsters run a tavern. Two talented jugglers will jump around on stilts, ride on a crazy bike, make jokes with the public and close the fair both evenings with a fire show. The fair is organised by Amata, the regional craft association that has spent the last 24 years organising the few real craft markets to be found in this part of Spain. It's not easy to make a living in this fashion, when there is so much competition from people selling mainly imported goods, but it can be done. That's why Amata insists that everything on the stalls has to be made by hand and by the person actually on the stall. And it works: in the years that Amata is organising this fair, it got to be known as the place to go when you are looking for original work and want to buy it directly from the author (and thus for a reasonable price). This year the fair is held during the fiestas of the Virgen de las Nieves, which are held every other year, because Hondón shares its patron saint with the neighbouring village Aspe. On Saturday, at the end of the fair, the famous Correfocs (literally: Fire run) is held - at midnight a group of people, dressed as devils and other fantastic characters will run, jump and dance around a big float that drives slowly through the streets of the village, while setting off all sorts of fireworks, a spectacular - and above all a noisy - event that attracts hordes of people to the village. The Craft Fair will be held on quieter moments: it starts on both Friday 9 and Saturday 10 August at 7pm and stays open until midnight. Hondón de las Nieves lies not far from Elche, Crevillente and Novelda; to get there from further away, take the exit "Aspe" on the A7 (South of Alicante) or A31 (Alicante-Madrid) and in Aspe itself follow the signs for Crevillente and Hondón de las Nieves. For more information, ring 639 979 678, we even speak English. You can see pretty pictures of previous markets at the Amata website, at http://www.amata.es/Hondon16.html.

CRAFTS AND FUN IN THE SUN Fancy an enjoyable and interesting outing with some likeminded company? Then come along and join in one of the fantastic creative workshops at Casa de los Sentidos in Jávea. Coffee/ tea, homemade cake and refreshments will be provided for the morning workshops and a three course lunch with wine and cava is included for the full days. Plus all the materials you will need and you get to take home your finished piece at the end. Quite a few ladies have already come along and had a great time: “I did a fantastic dot painting workshop at Casa de los Sentidos. Everything that we needed was provided by Patrice, the host. We were taught how to produce beautiful pieces of art on porcelain and the best thing of all, we got to take them home. We were provided with refreshments throughout the morning which was a very nice addition. The workshop was fun, friendly and I made new friends. I would thoroughly recommend doing a workshop at Casa de los Sentidos.” “I've done 2 macramé classes with Patrice, and I definitely want to go back and learn more! The time spent here is relaxing, enjoyable and you learn a new skill too! Patrice and her family are so welcoming and make you feel relaxed (& I was very touched that they catered for me as a vegan, even making a vegan cake & lunch, which was lovely). The macramé wall hanging class is a lovely day in the garden, learning how to create macramé, with step by step help and guidance. There were 3 of us altogether in the group, and we could all go at our own pace and make a few mistakes! You get to choose the colours you want, and you go home with your own piece of art for your wall. I'm looking forward to going back soon.” For more information and reviews go to: www.facebook.com/casadelossentidos. Our workshops will start again in August. See our website for more information www.casadelossentidos.com. So get all your friends together for a fun girls day out! You can also book our courses as a gift for birthdays, weddings, baby showers or other celebrations.

Altea Golf Club - “A Hidden Gem Hidden away on the lower slopes of the Sierra Bernia mountain, close to the village of Altea la Vella and only 15 minutes from Benidorm, is the oldest and one of the most picturesque golf courses on the Costa Blanca. It is characterised by the stunning mountain and sea views and by the abundance of palm trees and Jacaranda trees that populate the course. The Golf Course itself is unusual in that it has 9 greens but with 18 tees, most of which are located in different positions to make rounds both varied and interesting. It is therefore ideal for golfers who want to play either 9 or 18 holes on a course that is both challenging and fun. Altea Golf Club is one of the few clubs in the area that is wholly owned by its members but still welcomes visitors to play the course at any time, subject to availability. The membership is made up of many nationalities, including Spanish, English, Dutch, German & Scandinavians to name but a few and there are many golf groups (societies) that new members can join, if they so wish. It is therefore perfect for those who want to enjoy fellowship as well as golf. The course itself has improved significantly in the last few years due to the hard work of the ground staff and the club itself is currently undergoing the biggest changes since it was opened in 1974. The club restaurant is re-opening in early October after major renovation and will feature an enlarged terrace with outside bar and superb views. On the upper floor there will be a new fitness centre and gym open to members and non-members alike. Why not call in for a drink or a meal and have a look around? If you are interested in playing at Altea Golf or becoming a member please contact the club office, Tel. 96 584 8046 or go to www.alteagolfclub.com to book online.

Call Roger at Roger's Upholstery & Carpet Cleaning for a First Class result Roger came to Spain in 1997 and studied at XIC college. He has been living in Spain ever since. Roger is now a family man, together with his Spanish wife for over 20 years and two teenage children. Since Roger began his cleaning business a little over 14 months ago he has accumulated over 700 happy customers. Not by chance or good luck, but by gaining a very good reputation and relationship with his customers. For Roger, it doesn't make a difference if it is a luxury yacht that needs the carpets cleaning or just a single armchair in the retirement village. His punctuality, responsiveness, honesty and politeness are what makes his business stand out, his customer care is second to none and he always gives service with a smile.

Faster Drying Time One of the great benefits of carpet cleaning in the summer is that the drying time is much faster. On average freshly cleaned carpets will dry in half the time than when they are cleaned in the winter or spring. So gone are the worries about over wetting, slow drying times or the carpets not being completely dry. Taking up your carpets for the summer prevents them getting full of the sand that miraculously always appears from the beach, because no beach trip is complete without bringing some sand back in shoes, sandals, bags, swimsuits, and everything else involved with summer fun! Roger will collect, clean and return your rugs, or he can clean your carpets, chairs, sofas, mattresses and upholstery in situ if you prefer. If you prefer the cooler tiled floor feel during the summer, he can return your cleaned rugs bound in sturdy plastic, perfect for storage until the winter months.

Telephone 670 033 031 or see his website www.rogers-cleaning.com for more details, and check out his Facebook page for testimonials from happy customers.

Summer Of Wine….. The summer in Spain is in full swing as I write and we are beginning to see new wines for next year from the Bodegas. Finally Spain has caught up with the fashion for very pale blush wines. Normally Spanish Rose’s are quite dark. But now we are seeing the Provencal style so pale it's almost white. But do beware some do not taste very good whilst others are delightful. More on these when I have had a chance to enjoy them! We have seen the success story of the fabulous little rosado from Valdecuevas a wonderful blend of Verdejo and Temperanillo. Those 2 grapes make a powerful conjunction of taste. A blush but not pale, fruity and interesting at a modest price. Peregrino Rosado from Leon is another delightful summer wine, a blush but not pale, and nicely dry with delightful flavours to compliment summer cooking and salads. It is well known that although a dark Rosado, Navarra has been making delicious Rosados for some time. For white wines, we are carrying some stunning wines. Emperatriz white Rioja for instance. We carry a superb upmarket Verdejo too, the Valdecuevas Cuvee. Our entry level Traslagares Verdejo is a delight to drink on its own. But then with Verdejo it is all about what you want for your money, generally the more you pay the more interesting it gets with added subtlety and intricacy. From Rias Baixas we have the delicious Goda Albarino, tasty fruity and so drinkable. Chardonnay? I have been an ABC man for years, (Anything But Chardonnay), but we now have a delightful Chadonnay called Sardosol, light, interesting and miles from those heavily faked buttery awful Chardonnays. It's time to mention wine snobbery. The most important thing is that you enjoy what you drink. The price does not matter.

Some restaurants serve the most abominable house wines, a cross between gasoline and lemon juice to my palate. Then there are those ridiculously expensive old Riojas that are to my palate, just dead. So my simple advice is enjoy what you like! Talking of red wines, Alto de Los Zorros, is an exceptional wine, especially in Crianza form. Strong round and fruity yet with some delightful dryness as you would expect from a Ribuero del Duero. Going further upmarket, we can explore the delights of Bassus Pinot Noir, French grapes grown in Spain. What a wonderful rich fruity wine. Haragon a delicious red with traces of pepper in its aftertaste, which will be derived from the soil where it is grown. El Seique a fabulous Monastrell from Alicante. I must mention that we are also exclusive stockists for the amazing Silent Pool gin from Guildford, Surrey! Not a cheap Gin of course, with traces of honey, juniper, kaffir lime, and botanicals. This Gin they say is intricately realised, if you like Gin you will love this one! Article written by John Le Sueur of Vinos & Viandas, Calle Thiviers No 2, Jávea. Marina Alta Arts Society goes on walkabout A group from the Marina Alta Arts Society recently joined together under the direction of our Programme Manager, Laine Widmar, to take a journey of discovery to the Kline- Schreuder Sculptor & Botanical Gardens and onto Roman Villa Open Air Museum both in l’Alfas del Pi. The Klein-Schreuder permanent exhibition is located in the most beautiful botanical garden and is, well worth another visit. The ancient terraces -the bancales- are being restored. The dead fruit trees have been removed and the land has been ploughed, and over 800 metres of path has been installed. John and Johanna Klein-Schreuder wanted to share their garden and keep it not just for themselves, so they have produced a magnificent display of palm trees, Mediterranean and tropical plants. And, to set this all off with a varied inclusion of 20 large sculptures from local artists among the more permanent exhibition. Moving on, the group travelled to the Playa del L’Albir to visit the Open Air Museum of the Roman Villa which is located in an exceptional setting, supported by Richard from the Environmental Dept. Ayuntamiento and the Archaeologist Carolina Frias. The museum covers a vast area of rooms, private baths and a funeral amphorae which exposed many interesting secrets. This was a most enjoyable and informative experience. A full excavation is now in process, at this most important archaeological site in the Province of Alicante, and again is worth a further visit. Keep Your Dog Safe In Hot Weather It seems so obvious but still I see people making the same mistakes over and over again. To protect your dog from heat exhaustion and heat stroke, read the following: *Don't leave you dog in the car. *Don't let your dog run in the middle of the day. Let your dog go for it in the early morning or at night when it's cooler. Exercise your dog when humidity and the heat index is very low. *Take stock if your dog has dark coloured fur. They will get hot faster (black absorbs heat where white repels it). *Be especially careful with short snouted dogs like pugs, bulldogs, mastiffs and shih tzus. These breeds overheat much faster and are highly susceptible to dog heat stroke. *Provide shade for your dog. *Always have fresh, clean water available for your dog. Dogs need hydration just like humans. Have a large plastic dish (metal gets hot) of fresh water, replacing it regularly with cold, clean water. *Please don't tether your dog outside when it's hot. Dogs easily get the tether wrapped around various objects and end up in the sun. This is a recipe for dog heat stroke. *Remember your dog doesn't wear shoes and asphalt, concrete, etc. get very hot in the summer sun. Burnt pads are very painful and can become a serious issue quickly. Imagine walking barefoot on asphalt in the summer. Ouch! Walk your dog when it's cooler outside and preferably in shaded areas. *When you're out & about with your dog, don't let your dog drink from stagnant water sources. These often have bacteria & mold that will make your dog very sick. *Never, ever leave your dog unsupervised around a swimming pool. They can easily drown. If you have a pool, train your dog where the stairs are located so they know how to get out. Just like children, keep an eye on your dog, at all times, when they're in the pool area. Immediately call your veterinarian if any of the following occur with regard to your dog: *Rapid breathing with an increased heart rate. *Your dog has discoloured gums--Dogs with heat stroke have dull gray or pink gums instead of the normal red-pink colour. *Your dog is disoriented--they are unaware of their environment. *Your dog isn't listening or obeying commands, seems lost or scared. *Your dog has a wild or panicked expression. If you suspect your dog may have heat stroke, first call your veterinarian. Secondly, to help bring your dog’s temperature down, do the following: *Gently place a cool wash cloth on the unhaired belly area. Keep rinsing the cloth with fresh cool water and applying until your dog is calmer (this should only take about 5 minutes). This is not a substitute for getting your dog to the veterinarian. Get them checked out. It could save their life. With the temperatures rising all over, be aware & make adjustments when necessary to take the very best care of your dog. If you have questions or concerns, talk with your veterinarian or veterinary technician. LEIKO, male, crossbreed, DOB 08.2010 – 52cm. With this in mind we wanted a collection of rugs that offered a really diverse range of styles, colours and patterns suitable for everyone whatever your taste. We have really cute children’s rugs in the shape of animals, modern geometrics and rugs splashed with vibrant colour, classic and contemporary florals and designs and a fabulous range of plains in all sorts of textures and colours. There are also practical outdoor rugs available in a polypropylene finish, the perfect finishing touch to your outdoor space making it feel more like a room than a simple terrace. And for those wanting something extra special there is an Haute Couture collection with hand tufted sculptured rugs, rugs with New Zealand wool and Bamboo silk, a glamorous collection of leather rugs and a collection of made to measure rugs so that you get the perfect fit to your space. The Amata craft market in Jávea port continues

The traditional summer fair can be found by the sea front at the end of Avenida Jaime I in the port of Jávea (see Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/rx5uWDjHiYs or search for "Feria de Artesanía Xàbia"), opening every evening from 7pm until midnight*. A real craft fair, with real craft workers who make what they sell, and hope to sell what they make. Not for nothing has Amata chosen the slogan "Artesanía de Autor®" - which means that what you see is made by the man or woman on the stall. The stalls can vary from week to week, but you will always find that every stall offers something different: leather bags, leather belts, original lamps from recycled material, rag dolls, wooden toys and puppets, jewellery from silver, copper, ceramics, macramé or recycled tins, hand painted designer clothes and even some paintings and water colours. Many of the people will be at work in their stalls so you can get them to add a name or a detail or, if you can wait a few days, let them make something specially for you. For further details ring 639 979 678 (and Elvira speaks English). *There is also a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/feriaartesaniajavea/) where you can find any news about special activities like live music in this fair and possible changes in the opening times.

MIDSUMMER MADNESS! The Summer Antiques, vintage, retro and Collectors Fair in Salon Canor, Calle Assegador, Teulada 03724 will be held in the beautifully, elegant and air conditioned salon on Thursday 15 August from 9am to 3pm. It's a national fiesta so what better way to spend your day than in a cool salon experiencing the pleasure of beautiful, often rare or quirky items on sale. We have lots of new faces exhibiting as well as all your favourites. Canor provide an excellent bar service with bar food available all day. Ample parking and entrance are free of charge. There will be a valuation service priced at 2€ per item with all money raised going to Caring for Cats. We continue to support AKIRA and CAM the children's charity who will be represented at the Fair and selling generously donated items. Any queries please call 626 795 587 or 620 641 006. Water Features

Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth

Just a quick word about grass, if you have real grass that looks a little worse for wear then give us a call for a quotation for artificial grass. It really makes sense and looks great and can save you a lot of money within a short period of time. However grass is not my topic for this month, it is water features. As the weather warms up the presence of water within the garden one way or another is very calming, soothing and cooling. They can make a fantastic attraction and feature within the garden. When talking about water features there are many varieties to consider. If you have a small space or court yard a fountain or bubble feature may be the best option for you, as these can be used in very little space, where they can add something special to a dull corner or be the focal point of the space. You can either use formal or informal water features, but this is normally decided based on their location, what is around them and how you want them to work. For example, you can have a modern, contemporary water feature but in natural surroundings. Contemporary or traditional but in a formal manner, such as within a turning area of a drive, large courtyard or near an entrance.

Ponds and lakes. Essentially the same it just depends on the size. These can be bodies of water, one or more which can be linked by streams, cascades and waterfalls. Again these can either be formal or informal. The formal version normally being more square and accurate in the positioning in regards to property or other features within the garden and the informal being more like natural lakes and spaces.

Normally natural water features would be water that is purified via plants and bio filter systems to clean out natural waste to keep your water crystal clear. These are sustainable for both plants and fish and despite what many people may think are perfectly fine here in Spain, and as long as the scenario has been designed correctly and the filter system is adequate then you will have no problems. Fountains or contemporary water features can be both natural in terms of water treatments or, as many people do, they can be easily treated using pool chemicals so the water is clear, clean and free of pests. The main thing is water is wonderful and it can be added to many properties as a great alternative design feature, big or small, modern or traditional, contemporary or natural. I have created and installed water features and ponds, both big and small, both here and in the UK, and they are always wonderful and add so much to a space. They really are worth discovering. If you have any questions or would like us to give a quotation, or do retrospective work to your existing water feature give me a call or email.

How to design your bathroom Here at Showerman, developing functional and well thought out bathrooms is what we do every day, and we will be happy to help you design yours. To give you some food for thought here are some things to consider before you start designing a bathroom. 1. How many people are going to use the bathroom? You need to consider the available space, sufficient shelf and storage space and choice of furniture. 2. Do you want a bath or shower or both? If you cannot fit both a bath and a shower into your bathroom, use the elegant combination of a bath with a screen. 3. Do you want a toilet in your bathroom, or do you prefer two separate rooms? If there are more than two people sharing the household, two separate rooms are a more convenient solution, if possible. 4. You don’t have as much space available as you need? Enlarge the bathroom by taking a part of the neighbouring room. How to choose a shower enclosure? This is where we are the experts. We have been supplying and installing shower and bath screens for 25 years, in short we know our products and many conceivable solutions for every type of bathroom and we can guide you through all the things to be considered. You should consider not only the look of your shower enclosure, but also what type of construction and size will suit you best, what type of opening system you prefer for your bathroom etc.

Choose the right combination of shower door for your bathroom. Do not let shower enclosure dimensions limit your decision and discover the flexibility of shower door options. You can save up to half of the shower enclosure price, while creating a larger space for showering. Showering in a space of 80*100 instead of 90*90 is more useable – it takes up the same area but can seem more comfortable.

So to get your very own expert help in designing a bathroom, shower enclosure or outside shower, contact Alexandra at the Showerman on 96 579 2285 or visit the new showroom in the Thiviers area of Jávea (between the old town and the port) between 10am and 1pm Monday to Friday or visit www.showermanspain.com. Joining Hands The life of a Chiringuito owner seems to be an idyllic one. Being your own boss and setting your own hours, working in the fresh air, by the water side, chilled music wafting through the air ...everyone who has seen the iconic 80's film "Cocktail" with Tom Cruise will be able to relate to this. But in reality, life is not always "Cocktails and Dreams". Sometimes there are considerable hurdles put in front of you; sometimes these are man-made, and sometimes they are made by Nature. For 10 years, Mintt Beach Bar has been bringing you a refreshing atmosphere, superb food and great music, whilst unwinding with a cocktail, a beer, or a beautifully chilled glass of wine. Mintt also had the best views of the Mediterranean Sea, Until this year! This year Mother Nature has taken her course. Because after the enormous rainfall at Easter large tall canes have grown along the beachfront directly in front of Mintt, stealing the beautiful view away from us! Well, you can't have a beach bar without a view of the actual Med, can you?! The solution is now with the authorities, because these canes are swamping many of the other important plants, and if nobody does anything they will soon create a wall between the sea and the shore, negatively changing the Montanyar forever. At Mintt we do hope that they elect to clear the canes, because to lose the protected flora and the view would be a tremendous shame. Coupled with this, our lovely co-owner of our beach bar has just become a Mum for the second time. Mintt is, and always has been, a family run business and Mintt is simply too much to be overseen by just one person. In other words, Daddy is shattered too! So in true "let's work-together style" the absolutely perfect solution has been found. For the rest of this year Mintt is going to join forces with the very next Beach Bar along the coast, Punta del Este. The Staff at Mintt are delighted by this solution, transferring just 125 yards along the coast, looking forward to working alongside their new Punta del Este colleagues, and especially pleased to have the fantastic view back! For us Mintt customers this is great news too! We also get the beautiful sea view back, and the superb Mintt Offers & the Mintt VIP Memberships will still apply. Finally to steal another line from another iconic 80's film... as the Terminator would say, "We'll be back" next year, hopefully in our original spot once again! Sometimes Mother Nature wins. For this year for the moment, how fantastic that EVERYONE wins. So do come to Mintt / Punta del Este and enjoy everything that the 2 combined Best Beach Bars in Jรกvea have to offer! See advert below left for more information.

Oliva U3A news and forthcoming events The Summer Fayre saw hundreds of members gathering for a fun filled few hours. The Sing and Play group kicked of the event with their rendition of Gypsy Woman, followed quickly by Yellow Submarine; with the words on a screen behind them created a great sing-a-long. This musical opening created a wonderful atmosphere to, what I can only describe as, a lively and extremely social event. All the attending groups put in a lot of work to make their stall approachable and some had quizzes or games. The leaders were there to chat about their groups and activities. The craft stall encouraged participation in card making, the travel group had wonderful displays of photographs from trips and events, the Photography groups had a fantastic ‘photo-booth’ with a table full of props to choose from. There were so many groups and so many activities, I cannot possibly mention them all, but I do thank them in helping to make the event so entertaining and enjoyable. And, while all the group leaders were plying their trade, the crowd was being entertained by the Guitar group, Line dancing, Flamenco, the Choir, the Sing and Play and poetry readings. There were cakes, wine, coffee as well as Riaz, from the cookery group, serving up small plates of lentil dhal. Absolutely delicious! The aroma made me so hungry, I went back for two helpings. Presentations of flowers to Yolanda Pastor Bolo, for all her help and support over the past year, and a cheque for 1,500€ to Marisa Pericas Aracil from the AECC (one of the supported charities of 2019) went smoothly and the raffle winners eagerly collected one of the many prizes at the end, as well as the lucky winner of Mr Tom, the delightful knitted cat. New Groups There are already a few new possible groups in the pipeline for the coming U3A new year, which starts in September. I have members offering, Astronomy (theory and practical), Baking; (practical, chat and swap recipes), Social Responsibility: discussion and action, Homebrew: theory and practical, Classic Car; chat and share, Early Morning Beach Running/Walking, Swimming, plus lots more, and don't forget the Flamenco and Zumba. The Oliva U3A webpage will be updated as soon as possible with all information, in the meantime membership and renewals is only 10€, and I think money well spent. Visit the website https://u3aoliva.wildapricot.org for more information if you are interested in joining. Coming events. Autumn trip to Rincon de Ademuz for Artists, Photographers and Walkers (U3A members only) to enjoy the wonderful scenery and autumn colours, 29 October to 1 November, see website https://u3aoliva. wildapricot.org for details. 28 September, BBQ and Dancing (raising money for charity) at El Cid. See poster alongside. Female Focus August 2019

A GREAT ‘FAMILY DAY OUT’ FOR THE CHILDREN FROM THE CARE HOME IN DÉNIA Recently 21 children accompanied by 8 of their carers enjoyed a ‘family day out’ at Aqualandia. The children are all resident at the care home in Dénia. They are taken into care for a variety of reasons and a small group of people in Dénia who heard about these children went along to the home 8 years ago to see what we could do to improve their lives. The first thing we did was to decorate every room in the home – by getting together every Saturday and Sunday for a few months. On completion of the project a few of us decided that we wanted to continue to put smiles on their faces and improve the lives of these future citizens. We therefore decided to hold fundraising events to raise money for two projects – a ‘family day out’ each year and a special Christmas present and shoe box full of goodies for each child to be handed out by Papa Noel at the Christmas party. We have been able to do this for the last few years due to the generous donations we have received from other groups and associations in the area. We hope these generous donations continue so that we can put smiles on faces and give these children happy memories which will last a life time. I am sure that they will remember that members of the community in which they live cared about them.

Sunset Cruise 22 September

We have now joined forces with Help of Dénia and Marina Alta to organise our next fund raising event which will be a special Sunset Cruise on Sunday 22 September. We will leave Dénia at 7pm and have a 2 hour cruise along the coast. During the cruise there will be a goody bag of food and ½ bottle of wine for everyone and we will be entertained by John Curtis from Bay Radio who will get everyone up and rocking the boat. If you would like to join us please contact pamrowlinson@gmail.com or call 660 735 528. The price is €30 per person and includes the food goody bag, wine and entertainment. The bar will be open for alternative drinks.

SAMARITANS IN SPAIN

pat@samaritansinspain.com Female Focus August 2019

One of the most charismatic characters to favour the Costa Blanca over the past half century, Peter Pateman died in Denia Hospital after stoically battling with cancer for some time. For as long as he was physically able he dedicated much of his declining years on his mountainside ‘farm’ on the Bernia hillside. Peter, who continued to work – entertaining visitors at his Maserof Wine ‘hide-away’ cum Museum – did so until the very end. His lectures on viniculture and even down to ‘treading’ grapes, including the production and nurturing of ‘vino puro’ on the sierra slopes overlooking Jalon, were legendary. Peter Pateman’s Maserof was a very special place in that it was the only fully active productive ‘hands on’ Wine Club. It existed there whilst also becoming its founder’s ‘campo’ home. He lived there for many years in a shambling old rustic farmhouse which exuded character. Casually strewn with all manner of ancient artefacts and antiques Peter’s domain continued on facing page was in his own private heaven.

SUDOKU Here are two Sudoku puzzles of different skill levels for you to try. Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 grid contains the digits 1 through to 9 with no repeats, which means that no number is repeated in any row, column or box.

Answers to puzzles in the classified pages

Completing the picture on rickety shelves and tables there was always an ample sufficiency of ‘vino puro’ contained in old bottles, jugs and ‘jarras’ to ‘lubricate’ visitors who may arrive unexpectedly on the threshold. Adding to the exotic setting, strutting around the entrance to a subterranean, cave-like bodega, were numerous ‘protective’ gabbling geese and the odd burro. ‘Maserof Man’ and I met almost thirty years ago and I was astounded by the welcome I received from ‘Lincolnshire’s Peter’ who regally lorded over and pontificated professorially on grape growing and wine producing ‘in the old fashioned way’. His oenological diatribes were not just held at ‘la Granja’ either. He would lecture – glass in hand - whilst distributing ‘copas’ from barrels in a stacked bodega. I dubbed him jokingly ‘Maserof Man;’ and the name stuck. Peter had not always been into wine production. He had been a lumberjack in Canada and an antique dealer both in England and Spain. Indeed anyone visiting the Maserof estate might trip or stumble over lumber on one hand and a valuable antique relic on the other. On the wine front a visit to his realm during the ‘vendimia’ was always unforgettable and a bizarre yet absolutely delightful experience. A Sunday ‘open house’ featuring fruity wines, a giant paella and a tutorial on wine by ‘Maserof Man’. Vendimia time was another ‘fiesta’ occasion when all and sundry became involved picking, treading and manhandling the ancient press. Dossing down beneath the rafters, volunteers would sleep ‘rough’ on the premises and enjoy wholesome picnics. This was Peter Pateman’s world. In the evenings – after treading the grapes by candlelight – huge meaty stews were consumed, and impromptu entertainment became order of the day to round off the harvesting. Nostalgia at this level can never be forgotten but the past is still the past! Note from the Ed: When the owner of the Female Focus Publications first moved to Spain 3 decades ago, he met the famous Peter, who showed him around various properties in the mountains, one of which he was going to turn into a chicken farm.... Thank goodness for us all he decided to go into publishing instead (he knows nothing about chickens!). Female Focus August 2019
