Protect Your Vision: Why You Should Prioritise an Eye Test During World Glaucoma Week
Mark your calendars for March 9-15, 2025: it’s World Glaucoma Week, an annual observance aimed at raising awareness about a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The WHO estimates state that about 4.5 million people all over the world suffer from glaucoma-related blindness. The importance of early detection and treatment cannot be overstated. What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases characterised by progressive damage to the optic nerve, the crucial connection between the eye and the brain. Often, this damage results from increased pressure in the eye, though it can also occur in individuals with normal eye pressure. The two most common forms of glaucoma are:
1. Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG): A slow-developing condition with no noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs.
2. Angle Closure Glaucoma (ACG): Though less common, this type is more severe and can progress rapidly.
Without timely treatment, glaucoma can lead to permanent blindness. Alarmingly, more than 90% of glaucoma cases go undiagnosed in many communities.
Why Early Detection Matters
Glaucoma is incurable, and any vision lost cannot be restored. However, early detection through regular eye exams can prevent further damage. People with a family history of glaucoma are up to 10 times more likely to develop the condition, making regular check-ups vital for at-risk individuals.
How You Can Observe World Glaucoma Week
1. Learn about your roots: Investigate your family’s medical history. If glaucoma runs in your family, take proactive steps to schedule an eye test.
2. Visit Your Optometrist: A comprehensive eye exam, including a glaucoma test, is essential for early diagnosis.
3. Educate and Share: Spread awareness about glaucoma’s silent nature and the importance of eye health.
Key Facts About Glaucoma
• Glaucoma can affect anyone, from infants to seniors.
• People with POAG often don’t notice symptoms until vision loss begins.
This March, take charge of your eye health. Use World Glaucoma Week as an opportunity to book an appointment at Specsavers Javea for an eye test and encourage loved ones to do the same. Early detection can save your vision—and your quality of life. Call us on 966 463 420 now to make your appointment
Peace of mind with comprehensive house insurance
Your property is likely to be one of your most valuable assets and requires the right insurance protection.
Jennifer Cunningham Insurance highly recommends Generali’s fully comprehensive house policy as the best on the market. It's essential to ask the right questions and review the small print to ensure adequate coverage. Many house insurance policies may not provide sufficient protection, so it’s crucial to tailor your policy to meet your individual needs.
One important aspect of house insurance is determining the appropriate amount of contents cover. In Spanish home insurance policies, the kitchen is considered part of the contents, not the buildings. You can also opt for additional coverage like accidental damage, which includes many types of breakages and claims within the home.
Double-check the coverage of your home policy, whether you’re with Jennifer Cunningham Insurance and Generali, or another provider, to ensure it meets your needs. Discovering insufficient coverage when you need to make a claim is too late.
Our staff at Jennifer Cunningham Insurance continuously assess home policies. If we believe you could benefit from increased or additional coverage, we will contact you at renewal. If you have any concerns or questions, please reach out to one of our offices for advice and assistance. We also offer a dedicated claims function to support and guide you.
Our policies include optional guarantees such as:
• Dangerous dog liability
• Public liability for mobility vehicles
• Cover for electric vehicle chargers
• Illegal occupation and administrative defence (for second homes left unoccupied)
• Unpaid rent protection for landlords
We also offer enhanced coverage for valuable objects and jewellery in the event of theft involving violence.

February is the month of love and in the world we are living in at the moment I think it could do with a little more love. A kind word or an unexpected kind gesture go such a long way to making someone's day. I have to go back to the UK this month for a couple of days and realised that my wardrobe is just not adequate for their February weather. I vowed never to go back in the winter about 30 years ago after suffering with chilblains so badly that I cried most of the week. Since then I have managed to make all trips in the warmer weather, but this time it is unavoidable. After a begrudging shopping trip (as I will never use them again) I now have a selection of thermals for the trip which hopefully will keep me warm enough. I am also taking my waterproof walking boots to keep the chilblains away. It's not going to be my best look but needs must!
There is a lot going on this month including Carnival celebrations. If you haven't been to one of the parades then try to find one near you - you can't but help to enjoy the costumes and music.
Until next time, take care and be kind.

Financial Advice from our family to yours
Continuity of Advice – and adviser!
Have you been able to maintain the relationship with your adviser? Or are you looking for a new adviser?
Many expatriates arrive in Spain hoping to maintain the relationship they have with their financial adviser from their previous country of residence. Unfortunately, this is not always possible and depending on the circumstances, it can be difficult for financial advisers to service clients who move to another country.
Around the world, regulators and networks are closely monitoring the relationship advisers have with clients and particular importance is being given to where clients receive advice and by who. “Best practice” would insist that clients receive the most suitable and impartial advice available, but how is this possible if the adviser is unfamiliar with the legalities and tax obligations of the new country of residence?
We have picked up many clients over the years who find themselves in a similar situation to the above and one of the most common (and pleasing) pieces of feedback we receive is that our continuity of advice – and importantly adviser - provides them with real peace of mind.
In the UK and some other countries in Europe, it is not uncommon to see financial advisers stay at the same company for years, allowing individual investors to build rapport and trust with the adviser over time. However, the situation in Spain can be quite different, with many of the larger organisations often having high turnovers of staff, potentially leaving clients without knowing who to contact. In addition to this being a costly consequence for the company itself, client's frequently have to wait an avoidable amount of time to receive responses to emails and calls. It is then a guessing game as to who may turn up to see them at the next review meeting.
At Logic, we firmly believe that, in addition to the trust and customer confidence touched on above, business and adviser continuity can significantly reduce disruptions for clients when dealing with important financial matters. Our core business objective has always been to provide clients with an unrivalled level of service and this commitment is one of the primary reasons we have picked up multiple European awards over the years.
One fundamental difference that sets us apart as a family-run business is that our clients get to know us as a family rather than individual advisers working for a particular company. In turn, we view our clients as “our” clients, as opposed to his or her clients, which you commonly find in larger companies. This, coupled with the fact we have multiple advisers qualified to UK Diploma status level, allows us to provide an uninterrupted service – one designed to last for generations to come. If you would like to have a free, impartial chat, please do not hesitate to contact us to see if we can help.

THE NIGHT SKY IN FEBRUARY
A time of wonders and beauty
February is a really good month this year for stargazers, just look up on a clear night and there's a lot to see. The planets are one of the main things to look for with Mars, Jupiter and Venus being easy to spot, and Neptune, Uranus and Saturn (just about) available if you have a telescope. Looking to the south east, Mars is an easy planet to spot, fairly bright and it has that famous redish tinge to it. In the south is Jupiter very bright and easy to spot and even a pair of decent binoculars will let you see some of the many moons. One of them, Ganymede is the biggest moon in the solar system. Whilst looking at that area of sky, you'll find two magnificent star clusters nearby, the Pleiades just above and the Hyades in Taurus just below. Also looking a little further down you'll find my favourite of all constellations, Orion. There's so much to see here and I've mentioned most of it before, the famous Horse Head Nebula, the belt, star clusters etc etc. The star Betelgeuse is so big, our Sun would look like a pimple alongside it, we also know it will go supernova sometime in one heck of a big bang. It might happen next week, or not for thousands of years but it will be unforgettable for anyone who sees it.
The next easy to find planet is Venus, in the west and so easy to find just after dark. This month is when Venus is at her brightest so you can't mistake it for anything else. It's an odd thing but whenever Venus is like this there's a big rise in silly UFO reports, it makes you wonder about people doesn't it?
Only one spacecraft has ever landed safely on Venus, a Soviet one decades ago, and what it found was one of the nastiest places for humans ever discovered. The atmosphere is laced with acid, the temperatures are horrendous, and the pressure at the surface is over ninety times the Earths. To give you some perspective on that, a car tyre might have three bars pressure to inflate it, if you stood on Venus you would have ninety two bars pressure squeezing you as the acid dissolved your body and you were roasted at the same time. That's a far cry from the idyllic place pictured in the Dan Dare comics of my youth. Needless to say, the lander didn't last very long.
Horrid as the place might be, it is one of the most splendid sights to see in the night sky, and next time you are out with some friends, you can point to Venus, sweep your arm across the sky and point to Jupiter and then Mars, it seems to impress quite a lot of people.

Communities of Owners and Tourist Rentals in Spain
Recent legal updates have significantly strengthened the ability of Communities of Owners to regulate or limit tourist rentals. The Organic Law 1/2025, of 2nd January, introduces important changes to the Horizontal Property Law (Law 49/1960). These new regulations, which come into effect on 3rd April 2025, require property owners who wish to engage in tourist rentals to first obtain explicit approval from their Community of Owners. This new framework allows Communities to impose specific conditions for granting authorisation, such as requiring deposits, setting minimum rental durations, or implementing other tailored requirements. Additionally, the Community President is empowered to demand the immediate cessation of unauthorised tourist rental activities and, if necessary, initiate legal proceedings.
Practical Implications
1. Approval Timing: Communities usually hold only one annual general meeting. This means that property owners must often wait for this meeting to submit and discuss their requests, which could delay plans to begin tourist rental activities.
2. Uncertainty for Buyers: Prospective buyers looking to purchase a property for tourist rental purposes face uncertainty. There is no guarantee that authorisation will be granted, as this decision depends on the vote at the next community meeting. Buyers must consider this risk before making a purchase.
3. Transfer of Tourist Rental Licenses: One unresolved issue is the transferability of tourist rental authorisations (VUT)
when ownership changes. It remains unclear whether the new owner will need to reapply for authorisation or if they can continue renting under the previous approval. Further clarification may be required from the tourism authorities or could depend on the specific approach adopted by each Community of Owners. Communities of Owners play a crucial role in shaping these rules, and clarifying such terms in their bylaws can help provide more certainty for both current and future property owners.
Why You Need an Independent Lawyer
Given the complex and evolving legal landscape, it is vital to seek the guidance of an independent lawyer before purchasing a property for tourist rental purposes. A lawyer acting solely in your interest can:
• Review Community Bylaws: Ensure you understand any restrictions or conditions that could affect your ability to rent the property.
• Analyse Legal Risks: Evaluate the implications of the new law, including potential delays or denials of rental authorization.
• Provide Clear Advice: Help you make informed decisions, especially when dealing with communities that impose strict conditions or lack transparency.
At My Lawyer in Spain, we specialise in assisting clients with property purchases and navigating the challenges of tourist rentals. Our independent legal experts will ensure you are fully informed and protected throughout the process.

Lumps or pain in the groin or near the navel can often be caused by a hernia. A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Here are some common types of hernias that might cause these symptoms:
1. Inguinal Hernia: This type occurs when fatty tissue or part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall into the groin area. It’s more common in men and can cause a noticeable bulge and pain, especially when coughing, bending, or lifting.
2. Femoral Hernia: This happens when tissue pushes through into the upper thigh, just below the groin. It’s less common but can be more serious due to the risk of complications.
3. Umbilical Hernia: This type occurs near the navel and is more common in infants, but it can also affect adults. It happens when part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall near the belly button.
Symptoms of hernias can include:
• A noticeable lump or bulge in the affected area.
• Pain or discomfort, especially when bending over, coughing, or lifting.
• A heavy or dragging sensation in the groin.
• Weakness or pressure in the groin.
If you suspect you have a hernia, contact us now at Clinica Britannia for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, as the sooner you treat hernias the better and the cheaper the solution. If left complications can occur which can become life threatening.

Altea - the most beautiful town in Spain
Amid tough competition from superb Spanish towns with superb countryside, historic buildings, fantastic gastronomy and World Heritage Sites, Altea has been picked as the most beautiful town in Spain.
The top travel media company,
National Geographic, has compiled a list of the 100 most stunning towns in Spain and Altea is its number one choice. Altea’s picturesque blue domes of the church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, photogenic narrow streets in the old town, and its ideal location by the Mediterranean have attracted artists for many years. Add to this its long history and six kilometres of coastline, including the magnificent L'Olla Beach, and you can see why Altea is known as the jewel of the Costa Blanca.
A further four towns in the Valencian region make it into the top 10:
· Bocairent, which is renowned for its steep cobbled streets and historic sights
· The medieval town of Morella
· Peñíscola, which has one of the most beautiful castles in Spain
· The fabulous mountain-top town of Guadalest
According to National Geographic, the five most beautiful towns in Spain are:
· Altea (Alicante)
· Cudillero (Asturias)
· Sigüenza (Guadalajara)
· Valderrobres (Teruel)
· Santillana del Mar (Cantabria)
Special award for Benidorm park
The path through El Moralet park in Benidorm has received the prestigious Blue Trails Flag 2025 award from the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) in recognition for efforts made in enhancing the green space. The award will be presented in Murcia on March 26.
Benidorm has made great strides to enhance the park and make it a green lung of the beach city where people can enjoy the natural environment or practice sports.
To achieve the Blue Trails awards, several criteria need to be met including the conservation and management of the natural and cultural heritage, public use of the paths and information regarding the area. The park, which was rundown just a few years ago, is now being seen as a fine example of sustainability, accessibility, forest management and the environment.
Spain has more than 1,000 kilometres of Blue Trails including ones in Gandia, Benissa, Calpe, Alfaz del Pi, Orihuela and Villajoyosa.

Your Perfect Smile for Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a time to connect and make meaningful impressions, whether you’re meeting someone for the first time or sharing a special evening with your partner. Your smile plays a key role in making those moments unforgettable, radiating confidence and happiness.
Why a Smile Matters
In today’s world of online dating, first impressions are often based on photos and profiles. But when it’s time to meet in person, an attractive smile can be the difference between a memorable moment and a missed opportunity. A confident, well-cared-for smile not only enhances your appearance but also signals self-care and positivity. Whereas concerns like stained teeth, bad breath, or chipped enamel can hold you back. If these issues sound familiar, it’s time to take action. Solutions for a Stunning Smile – Clinica Dental La Plaza is the Answer
There are several ways to enhance your smile, depending on your needs. One popular option is dental veneers. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of your teeth, improving their appearance. They’re a great solution for small fractures, discoloured teeth, gum recession, or general wear and tear.
You can choose between composite veneers, which are costeffective and versatile, and porcelain veneers, which are more durable and natural-looking. Both options offer a quick and relatively painless way to transform your smile, giving you a polished, youthful appearance.
Tackling Common Issues
Another key factor in a great smile is fresh breath. Bad breath can result from stagnant areas in the mouth, gum disease, or even impacted wisdom teeth. A visit to your dentist or hygienist can address these concerns, leaving your mouth healthier and your confidence restored.
For those who feel nervous about visiting the dentist, many clinics offer consultations to discuss your concerns and create a plan to improve your oral health in small, manageable steps. Make This Valentine’s Day Special
Whether it’s veneers, a professional cleaning, or simply improving your oral hygiene routine, taking steps to care for your smile can make all the difference. Book a checkup today with us and take the first step toward a confident, dazzling smile.
Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer
Call us on 96 646 1120, and let your smile be the ultimate expression of love and care this Valentine’s Day. After all, the best accessory you can wear is your happiness—and it starts with your smile! Come and see us for a free initial assessment.

Look after your Heart this Valentine’s Day
As it is February, Valentine’s month, and hearts are on our minds, here is what to do if you ever think you're having a heart attack…
A heart attack is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. Recognising the symptoms and acting quickly can save your life or the life of someone you care about. Here is what to do if you suspect you are having a heart attack.
Recognise the Symptoms
Heart attack symptoms can vary, but the most common signs include:
• Chest pain or discomfort that feels like pressure, squeezing, or fullness, often in the centre or left side of the chest.
• Pain that radiates to the shoulders, arms, back, neck, or jaw.
• Shortness of breath, even without chest pain.
• Nausea, light-headedness, or cold sweats. Symptoms can differ between men and women. Women may experience more subtle symptoms, such as fatigue, indigestion, or back pain.
Act Immediately
If you think you’re having a heart attack:
1. Call Emergency Services - Time is critical.
If you are a Member of our Association, then immediately call us on our 24/7 telephone number 96 579 6099 and one of our Ambulances will immediately be directed to you.
If you are not a member, dial for emergency medical help immediately on 112.
Emergency responders can begin treatment on the way to the hospital, improving your chances of survival.
2. Chew Aspirin (If Advised)
If you are not allergic to aspirin and don’t have contraindications, chew and swallow a standard adult aspirin (325 mg). Aspirin can help thin your blood and improve blood flow to the heart.
3. Stay Calm and Rest
Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Try to remain calm to reduce strain on your heart. Avoid walking or any physical exertion.
4. Avoid Driving Yourself
Even if you feel capable, do not attempt to drive to the hospital. Wait for emergency medical personnel to arrive.
Prevention and Preparedness
Knowing your risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease, can help you take preventive steps. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and routine medical checkups are essential for heart health.
Remember, acting fast can save lives. If in doubt, always seek medical attention. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your heart.
Join Today. To join the association for only 60€ for the whole year for the whole household, telephone Laure Bolufer the Asociacion’s Registration Manager on 965 796 099. Or call into the office and see her, Laure is there from 10am to 1pm every weekday. The Head Office is located at Avenida Juan Carlos 1, No 69, 03730, Jávea. Artificial Grass and Fun
We seem to be getting more and more enquiries for clients wanting to create fun spaces with artificial grass, it doesn’t matter if it’s in a gym, in a play area for family or kids or for sports areas.
The fact is that artificial grass can be used as a soft under foot, green and effective way to cover large floor spaces both outside and inside. Because artificial grass is not natural grass of course you can use it in places natural grass just simply could not grow and that makes it a very versatile and handy product.
More clients are turning to make spaces like large underbuilds into play areas for their children, grandchildren, family and friends, into gymnasiums and or the best in my opinion golf simulator spaces.
This is a wonderful thing for the avid golfer especially if someone wants to get a sneaky bit of practice in between rounds to try and get a one up on their friends. For those who don’t know we supply all of the necessary parts for home golf as we install quite a few areas for clients completing large outdoor and indoor greens with practice areas with hitting bays, hitting mats etc.
The great thing about an indoor hitting bay is the fact you can have an all year-round driving range no matter the weather, no matter the hour and with a full system in place it allows you to examine your swing to correct it and or get the most from it.
It is a great use of space and allows our clients to enjoy their homes more than ever. One client built an entire sports bar, with a caged football area, putting area with hitting bay for golf, darts, pool table, table hockey, full working bar and kitchen. Creating a fun safe area for the family either in the cold of winter or the heat of summer.
If you’ve got an idea for a fun area in your home and or want to get rid of your old tatty lawn then give Artificial Grass Spain a call and we will come and help you discuss the solutions you need for a greener, cleaner and more useful home and garden.

Walk Your Way Well
with Niamh O'Sheehan
How is your New Year's Resolution going? As a coach this is a VERY busy time of the year for me. I love working with SMART goals to help people stick to their "new me" in the New Year. What's so SMART about that you say? Read on.
Walking is one of the simplest, most accessible forms of exercise, offering numerous physical and mental health benefits. Whether you're looking to increase your daily steps, enjoy the outdoors, or improve overall wellness, setting SMART goals can be a game-changer. Let's explore how to set SMART goals specifically for walking more, and how embracing nature can enhance this journey. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This goal-setting framework helps create clear, structured, and attainable objectives. Here's how you can apply the SMART approach to walking more:
1. Specific: Define clear, concise goals. Instead of saying, "I want to walk more," specify, "I will walk 5,000 steps daily."
2. Measurable: Ensure your goal can be quantified. Use a pedometer, fitness tracker, or a smartphone app to track your steps and progress.
3. Achievable: Set realistic goals based on your current fitness level. If you currently walk 5,000 steps daily, aim for 8,000 steps and gradually increase. Don't go overboard!
4. Relevant: Align your walking goals with your broader health or lifestyle objectives, such as improving cardiovascular health, reducing stress, or spending more time outdoors. Make it about what YOU want.
5. Time-bound: Establish a timeline for your goals. For example, "I will reach 10,000 steps daily within three months.
Walking in nature offers a refreshing and rejuvenating experience. It provides an opportunity to disconnect from the digital world, breathe in fresh air, and immerse yourself in the tranquillity of natural surroundings. We have touched on this before, but let's remind ourselves why a SMART goal to walk more is really smart:
Boost Mental Well-being: Studies show that walking in green spaces reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. The sights and sounds of nature have a calming effect on the mind. Believe me, I experience this daily.
Increase Motivation: A scenic trail or park can make your walking routine more enjoyable, encouraging you to walk longer and more frequently. So be adventurous.
Enhance Physical Health: Walking on varied terrains, such as trails or hills, can improve balance, coordination, and overall fitness. It's like a free gym workout.
So, let's do this! Let's get serious about walking as a fitness regime and as our therapy. I'm here if you need guidance or coaching. I can start you on the right step. Let's transform walking from the mundane to the wondrous. Feel free to reach out to me via WhatsApp at +34 676 507 791.

Teulada Moraira Lions Club support local European Award winning Children's Special needs school
The city of Denia currently has 10 educational centres for primary and secondary education. In addition to these, there is one school - Raquel Paya, dedicated exclusively to teaching special needs education. The Raquel Paya school opened in 1986 to provide education and rehabilitation to children with diverse special needs. Since 2013 the Teulada/ Moraira Lions have had a close and ongoing relationship with this amazing school.
The Raquel Paya school was initially conceived with 5 classrooms, but now has currently grown to 12, it has 87 full time students and 1 home based student. There are 42 full time staff, with specialised teachers in every room. Therapeutic pedagogy, speech and physiotherapy, together with multipurpose learning tasks such as sewing, cooking, marquetry, pottery and art - are essential and fun activities which are practised daily. At the end of last year a visit was organised for the Lions to present the latest contribution to the school, an eye tracker communications teaching device (at a cost of 4948€) for those students unable to communicate verbally or who are physically confined to a wheelchair, or those without the ability of any movement. They now have the opportunity through this eye tracker device to express their feelings and wants, often for the first time in their lives! It’s an impressive machine, offering an amazing opportunity to the students who hitherto had no way of expressing or communicating themselves. The eye tracker communication device needs specialised teachers. The teachers can then train the students to successfully maximise the new opportunities and experiences opened up to benefit each specific student's needs. This needs time, patience and care which the staff have in abundance! The machine is calibrated by a complex following of eye movements alone, through a computer screen. The computer then allows the user to focus on a variety of functions, some practical, and some entertainment. It allows the user to highlight their specific needs - eg I’m hungry, I’m thirsty, I need the toilet. It also allows them to focus on their specific feelings - eg I’m sad, happy, angry. One of the machine's many functions is that it can record “parents” voices and messages, with sound and vision which the students can relate to. This complex and sophisticated learning device can revolutionise the lives of the students who previously had no way to express themselves! Following on from the presentation we then had an opportunity to try out this device for ourselves, thus allowing us to fully appreciate its benefits and complexities. We were then treated to a Christmas lunch, all made, presented and served by the catering students of the school. It was a tasty treat and splendid achievement, as well as a lovely surprise to finalise our visit. In 2024 the Raquel Paya school, Denia, was the receiver of a prestigious European Educational Excellence award for innovative teaching. It is 1 of 21 award winning educational centres in Europe and the only Spanish vocational training centre to ever receive this extraordinary recognition. Well done to the principal and all the teachers of the Raquel Paya school! The award highlights participation in the Erasmus program with outstanding teaching and learning practices, and is a truly amazing achievement that this modest, Spanish special needs school is at the forefront of educational innovation in Europe. The Teulada Moraira Lions are proud to continue with help in our own small way with the progress, innovation and achievements of this amazing school.

Tutankamun Exhibition and Valencia.
No post-Christmas blues for U3A Calpe travel!!
The first trip of the year was to the Tutankhamun Exhibition in the Bombas Gens Art and Exhibition Centre on the outskirts of Valencia: a warehouse that has been converted to house Immersive exhibitions and this was one of their most impressive, to date.
After over 90 minutes travelling through 'the Valley of the Kings' the 16 members were transferred to Valencia.
They asked for a central location with time to explore and that is what they got!!!!
This was the first 'overnighter' of the year and the hotel, The Venecia Plaza Central was in the Ajuntament Square. The hotel proved to be a very popular choice.
Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning gave the visitors free time to explore the many interesting buildings which surround this now pedestrianised plaza, meet old friends or simply relax and watch the world go by, while enjoying the winter sunshine on one of the numerous terraces.
Our next outing is to the Benidorm Palace on 7th February. The show is 'AIRE'.
75€ includes: Show, Palace plus dinner and transport. We have only a few spaces left on this trip : shirley-spain@hotmail.com to book or for further information.

"Help Of Marina Alta" Charity Help The Volunteers Of The Proteccion Civil Of Benidoleig.
The charity of HELP of Marina Alta has recently made a very significant donation which substantially helped the purchase of a new car for the Volunteers of the Proteccion Civil in Benidoleig. This replaced the Proteccion Civil's old and unreliable car which was nearly 25 years old. The new car is used by the volunteers in Benidoleig to support the Town hall in all manner of tasks from being involved in most emergencies that occur in the village and the surrounding mountains, to helping the village doctor do house visits at difficult addresses, taking residents on hospital appointments when other transport is not available and helping with many events held in the village.
HELP of Marina Alta, established in 1984 is a very successful registered charity that has a mandate to help the locality of the Marina Alta. The charity has a well-earned reputation, so have a look at its website and you will be astounded by the work it does https://helpmarinaalta.org.
Both organisations were very responsive to the major disaster of the Dana flooding in Valencia. Help of Marina Alta, in addition to their responding to the disaster in many ways, also came to the help of the Proteccion Civil by replacing the clutch in a vehicle that had been severely damaged trying to deal with the axle deep mud in the worst affected area of Piaporta. This help for the people badly effected is still on-going.
Other organisations that helped with the purchase of the car were La Asociación Beneficia Marina Alta, charity shop, Ondara and Ajuntament de Benidoleig.
Elche awards adopted son title to Pikolinos founder
Elche has awarded the prestigious title of adopted son to Juan Perán, the founder of the Pikolinos Group, for his social and business work. Juan Perán, who was born in Lorca in 1947, moved to the Elche area in 1960 where he started working in the shoe factories.
In 1980 he started Pikolinos with Rosario Bazán and the footwear company soon became an international benchmark in the sector. In addition to his outstanding business career, Perán has shown a firm commitment to his adopted city by working with the UMH Foundation, the Children's Health Foundation and the Elche Acoge Foundation.
The title of adopted son is the highest distinction awarded by Elche council to people born outside the city, in recognition of their merits and contributions to the municipality.
The Spanish fashion-comfort brand Pikolinos was founded in 1984 by Juan Perán. He opened his first store in the Elche region and you can visit the Pikolinos Store & Outlet in Carrer Santiago Ramon y Cajal, on Elche Industrial Park.
Message from the International Choir (formerly the English Choir)
Have you ever thought about singing or joining The International Choir? (Previously known as the English Choir). We sing in 4-part harmony across many different genres. We welcome new members from all nationalities and abilities, so it's not necessary to be able to read music.
Why don't you come and join us? We meet on Thursday afternoons in Teulada main square, in the Pensionistas building 2:30pm to 4:45pm. We do not hold auditions, but if you're unsure what section you should be in, you can turn up, try a scale to find your place in our lovely choir.
You can come and sit on the sidelines, or just dive in and have a go. It's a really good time to join as we are learning new songs for our next concert in May.
You need to be able to commit to attending rehearsals most weeks and put in a little bit of practise at home, but your reward will be to learn a new skill, make new friends, raise money for local charities and above all have fun!
We hope to see you soon. It really is a fabulous group of people to join and a warm welcome awaits you!
Tourist apartments exceed hotel places in Alicante
The number of tourist accommodation places in 10 Spanish cities outnumbers the total hotel supply, according to a report by Exceltur tourism organisation on the 25 cities with the highest volume of tourist accommodation places in 2024. These include Alicante, Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Las Palmas, Santander, Gijón and Murcia.
In addition, the number of holiday apartments or homes has increased in many Spanish cities compared to 2023 levels. With increases of more than 15% are Valencia (+30.2%), Madrid (+22.9%), Córdoba (+22.1%), Alicante (+21.8%), Málaga (+19.3%) and Seville (+17.4%).
The number of holiday accommodation places in Spain grew by 17.5% compared to 2023, reaching 344,397, almost six times more than the 2.9% increase of the 404,914 beds available in hotels. The figure for overnight stays for visitors was 1,063 million nights between January and September last year, a growth of 5.5% compared to 2023.
This demand for tourism accommodation is putting pressure on the rental market in popular resorts and cities, and in some tourist destinations, residents have protested against the soaring rents which is pricing them out of the area. Many local authorities are limiting the number of tourist licences they issue and a new law will prevent digital platforms from advertising tourist homes that do not have the necessary licence.
Colour trends for 2025
Colour trends for 2025 are poised to reflect a blend of optimism, sustainability, and digital influence. Emphasizing a return to nature and wellness, many designers are drawing inspiration from organic hues and materials that promote a sense of calm and balance.
One significant trend is the rise of earthy tones, such as warm terracottas, soft greens, and muted browns. These colours evoke a connection to the environment, mirroring a global shift towards eco-consciousness and natural living. Brands are increasingly incorporating these shades into their products, appealing to consumers seeking authenticity and a grounding aesthetic.
In contrast, the digital world continues to shape colour trends, with vibrant, bold colours making a statement in both fashion and interior design. Expect to see bright neons and saturated jewel tones, reminiscent of the digital age and virtual experiences. These electric colours provide an energetic counterbalance to the more subdued earthy tones, reflecting a desire for positivity and creativity in design.
Additionally, pastel shades are set to maintain their popularity, with soft blues, lilacs, and blush pinks appearing in various applications. These colours bring a sense of tranquillity and playfulness, perfect for personal spaces and fashion-forward choices.
Metallic accents will also play a role in 2025’s colour palette, with reflective surfaces adding depth and luxury. Gold, silver, and iridescent colours can be seen enhancing both fashion and interior design, offering a touch of glamour.
Overall, the colour trends of 2025 will showcase a dynamic interplay between natural inspiration and digital innovation, inviting consumers to express their individuality while remaining connected to the world around them. As sustainability and personal expression continue to be at the forefront, expect a palette that celebrates both nature and technology in harmonious balance.
The Panto is Alive Alive Oh
Careline Theatre proved that the classic British pantomime is very much alive and still as popular as ever here in the Marina Alta on the Costa Blanca. This year, Careline's annual Panto production was "Sinbad The Panto". Staged at Benidoleig Auditorium, it gave us a wonderful tale of adventure encompassing baddies, goodies, love and quite possibly the funniest Dame we have ever witnessed in Fanny Haddock (played by Paul Young in his debut as the Dame).
The adventure started in Sleepy Musselburgh, slightly more north than the original Arabian nights tales, we started off with Sinbad (Sabryna Norman, who just goes from strength to strength as a principal) and Bonnie the Cat (Isla Mestre Scott, whom at 9 years of age and playing a principal is a testament to her incredible ability), a cat with nine lives and used all of them. Along the way we met Jeanie Meanie (Victoria Connolly a Careline Stalwart) or was that Billy Connolly? Rosie (Roisin Stastra O'Sheehan, yet another member of Careline's dance & drama academy who is certainly making a name for herself as a future superstar) who had to stowaway in the pursuit of her love of Sinbad ably assisted by Nursie (Dee Wilkes - in her first principal role). Fortunately Nursie had an endless supply of magic which quickly put an end to all danger and mishaps and there were plenty to keep us all entertained.
Pirates a plenty with Paul Winter as the Pirate Captain threatening to make everyone to "Walk the plankieee" and strange inhabitants of a wild remote island giving us danger with the evil Island Witch, (Tricia Aylward), along with much boooing and hissing, but you could rely on a Rock Bird or in this case a Roc Bird (Kelly B Wright, one of the areas most talented singer and actors) to come to the rescue urged on by her adorable little Roc Chic, (Sofia Vaines) treating us to an incredible display of colour, whilst employing the assistance of her fellow birds to transport everyone safely back to dry land.
Along the way we laughed, cried, booed and we cheered, then we sang and even discovered the actions to "The Drunken Sailor" thanks to Fanny and Bonnie.
Oh what an amazing show you delivered Careline Theatre, we thank you for keeping Pantomime alive and can't wait for next year.
Special thank you to Directors Candida Wright and Suzanna Mace and all the cast and crew who contributed to a memorable show. If you'd like to know more about forthcoming productions, help out back stage or even try your hand at acting, then please visit our website www.carelintheatre.net, or find us on Facebook 'Careline Theatre Alcalali' and 'Careline Performing Arts and Dance Academy'.

Each guest received a ¨Lai See¨ packet containing a lucky coin – albeit of the consumable variety, it truly was a case of ¨Kung Hai Fat Choi¨ - A Happy New Year for everyone. Photos show members of the lodge, guests and friends, many dressing for the occasion.

Leo: The Sun enters Pisces on February 18th keeping up standards in the eighth house and bolstering the strong actions of the New Moon. Looking behind the scenes you are ready and waiting and only time now can tell you to go for it!
Virgo: Mars finally Directs on the 23rd of February, returning into the eleventh house of Cancer until April 17th. When retrograde is finally over Mars can once more concentrate on long range goals and reevaluate any creative projects.
OUR OROSCOPE
Libra: Venus, your ruler, is in transit to the seventh house of marriage, partnerships and business deals. The intensity of Venus at this time is bringing in intimate and more romantic energies and it’s time to take a risk at work or play.
Scorpio: Attention should be given to the hard angle created by Uranus. This planet has been known to shock with the speed that it operates and this month looks like a time to settle all retrograde planets and to take control for a start!
Sagittarius: Drive and focus finds you a way through this month. With benefic Venus bringing in creativity and actions in the sixth house it is time that you finally play to win. Anything else just delays the final outcome for another day.
Capricorn: The house of friendship is the eleventh house and here is the point for your networking and social expansion. Uranus predicts and Jupiter becomes more benefic but the end result is going to be, unexpectedly, a meeting of souls.
Aquarius: Take a lucky chance this month as a gamble is on offer and there’s work to do. Just make sure that you read the fine print and sign on the dotted line now that you are not having to play for time and the going is tough.
Pisces: A time to set sail and to travel! This could be forward planning now, but it is out there on the cards. Jupiter blesses your journey as one that has finally got you to face up to facts. Now the question is: Who’s going with you?

HELP of Marina Alta would like to thank everyone who has supported their fund raising and collections for the people of Valencia.
On the 29th of October the DANA flooding hit many towns around Valencia. On Sunday 3rd November we took the loaded HELP van along with Danny from Bay Radio in his over packed Jeep pulling a trailer packed to the gunnels, and set off for Algemesi. We took cleaning products, food, water, new warm jackets, nappies, baby food and anything we thought the people may have needed.
It was horrendous that first trip. Mud everywhere you looked, including the people, covered in mud and their clothes soaked as they battled to reach the depots for fresh water and some food and material to help them clean. Once unloaded we were asked to load up again and go street by street dropping of the food parcels we had been given. It was a very emotional day. We returned again on the Wednesday but this time with much needed cleaning equipment. New large brooms, scrapers, mop heads, lots of wellington boots, hot water bottles, bleach, water, new wheelbarrows, wheelchairs, walkers etc. This time we went in a bigger van from SR Print and again with Danny. When we reached Alchemesi we found the water gone but mud still piled everywhere. We had to go to three depots being controlled by the army before we could drop off. People arrived in smaller vehicles and took goods from us to take direct to the families.
Since then we have received over 30,000€ and collected goods, furniture and continue to do what we can to help the people so badly affected by the floods. We have bought over 30 new gas heaters, fridges, freezers, new beds, karchers, dehumidifiers, tumble dryers, a special recliner chair for an elderly lady who lost hers in the flood. We have replaced bed bases with storage and wardrobes. We purchased and donated over 4500€ to the Christmas toys and gift appeal also for children of Valencia.
More heaters, dehumidifiers and white goods have to be sent up too. We really want people to know that there is still much to do to help the people get their homes back into liveable conditions. If they want to help us do this then they can donate to our "Valencia Underwater Fund", La CAIXA, HELP de Denia y Distrito, ES11 2100 9015 2102 0016 2933. Also if you would like to donate good condition furniture items then let us know on 634 345 014.
Adopt a Pet
3 little puppies were found in a cave with their mum. They are healthy but need a family to help them explore the real world. Kevin, Katie and Bobo are born 1st of October (aprox) and will be small to medium. Want to know more about our puppies, or our other dogs? Contact us on Facebook 'Tanamera Rescue' or by email stichtingtanamera@gmail.com.
Merlin, 5 spent a short spell in foster some time ago and is more than ready for his forever home. A sweet but nervous boy, he will need to be adopted locally, preferably by a family with another dog, so that they can come to get to know him before taking him home. Please contact Akira on 657 689 567 or email akirashelter@aol.com
SOFIA is a super sweet (about 12 yrs) cat, too old for the hustle and bustle in the shelter. She waits patiently for her food and a stroke; then she brightens up hoping that you will take her home… She will fit in an apartment or house! Call: Monica on 606 446 123 or visit www.CalpeCatShelter.com for more information.
The water damage has been so bad that the walls have to be stripped bare, back to the brick before they can replaster and paint. This is a long process and we hope they will eventually receive monies from the government and insurances payments if possible, but for now they are struggling with no help and need to get their lives back. Thank you for any help you can give. The photos show grateful recipients and the army delivering some of our karchers.
This is Max, he is about two years old. He is energetic and loves walks and to play. He is really friendly and loving and he needs an active family as his forever home. Please visit him and all the other lovely dogs and cats in Benidorm Animal Shelter between 10am-1pm Monday to Friday. Tel: 965 856 268. www.protectorabenidorm.org

The Calpe Benissa Lions joined with members of the Jávea, Denia, Pedreguer Lions in greeting our District Governor, Paloma Fernandez, who had travelled from Leon to visit us.
The photo shows the President of the Calpe Benissa Lions, Carole Saunders, receiving a certificate of appreciation for all the hard work the Club has done for the local community, and Valencia.
Carole explained to Paloma that with the help of the volunteers and Lions members, and valued customers and donors, the money they have made in 2024 at their second hand shop they have on Calle Pintor Sorolla,15, in Calpe has enabled the Club to donate over 25,000€ in donations to local causes. These causes include, Calpe and Benissa Caritas, the Cruz Roja Calpe, the Maite Boronat Day Centre for disabled adults, the Colegio Gargasindi, for disabled children.
The Calpe Benissa Lions has also donated so far, 4,000€ to help people affected by the flooding in Valencia.
We are always looking for new members, and volunteers, and of course grateful of any donations you can give. For further information please call Carole in 639 637 520, or email calcalpe@gmail.com.
U3A Calpe news
The weather on the first Coffee/General meeting in January was really dreadful and it was wonderful that 42 members braved the elements. It was hectic as membership renewals were due and it took Dairong, Jo and John to work through the queue! John Dale then performed three monologues while members enjoyed their coffee. The Committee sends thanks to him for his performance. Meetings are held on the third Friday of every month and take place at Yodel. Top Floor of Plaza Central, Calpe, at 11am to 1pm. The next U3A Calpe evening social event is March 25th to celebrate all things Irish. Full details of all events www.u3acalpe.org.
AFPO, THE ASS0CIATION 0F FOREIGN PROPERTY OWNERS
AFPO's next meeting will be held at the Calpe Tennis Club, on Tuesday the 25th of February. We will invite everyone to have an informal coffee at 10.30am and then have the formal meeting afterwards. New members are always welcome. Our guest speaker will be a representative from Calpe Cruz Roja (Red Cross) who will present the new Virtual Friend Scheme, “Depositivo de Voz”. AFPO is an association that helps residents with their problems with bureaucracy, but more importantly we have a team of volunteers helping patients at the Calpe Centro de Salud, translating for them when their Spanish is not good enough for them to understand what their Doctor says. We have an excellent website which keeps you updated with the latest local news. If you would like to help as a translator, please call Noel Lawrence on 620 687 633. If you would like to join the association or for more information call Carole on 639 637 520, or email calcalpe@gmail.com.
