Target reached for DiabetesCERO
Specsavers Ópticas has been raising money for the diabetes research foundation DiabetesCERO since March 2024, to help them find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. They are pleased to announce that they have hit their goal of raising 5,000€ for the charity, to fund important research projects in Spain searching for a cure.
This was a team effort with the stores across Spain collecting money and undertaking activities and challenges and they are very proud to have raised so much for this excellent cause.
Cecillia Navarro Tudela, Director of Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea commented, “We want to say a big thank you to everyone who collaborated with us on this campaign. We’d like to thank our generous customers, staff members, family and friends who have donated in store, and sponsored our activities. We couldn’t have hit our goal without you!
Here in Jávea, 276€ was donated by customers in our collection tin and we also organised a charity hike in May to the Montgó mountain. Led by four of our team members, the intrepid explorers faced their fear of heights, stuck together and reached the summit in one hour and 45 minutes, returning back to base in under three hours. Thanks to participation and sponsorship, we raised 325€, taking our stores total to over 600€. We’re very proud of the result and grateful to everyone who took part.”
Optometrist Martín Barrera adds, “Our hike and the campaign in general has been a great opportunity to talk about DiabetesCERO’s fantastic work, as well as raise awareness of the link between diabetes and vision loss, something which we are very passionate about. If you have diabetes, or are at a high risk of developing it, please get your eyes tested regularly to spot signs of diabetic retinopathy. If this is undiagnosed and untreated, this can develop into Diabetic Macular Edema (DME), among other problems, and cause permanent vision impairment and blindness. Please protect your vision by having your eyes tested on a regular basis.”
You can find Specsavers Ópticas Jávea just off the Carretera Cabo la NaoPla, near Servicolor, at Avenida Del Pla 125, Edificio Caribe, Local 6, Jávea, 03730. Request your free eye test at www.specsavers.es.
I am writing this just before Christmas - the presents are wrapped, I've got the pigs in blankets and ginger snaps (only two things that are MUST HAVES in my house at Christmas) and the grandchildren are getting more excited by the day. Darling daughter has been doing the elf on the shelf and both grandchildren (6 & 10) are being sooooo good. The 3 Kings came to school and the youngest has visited Santa - the eldest isn't so sure and asked darling daughter if she was Santa. Although she doesn't really believe she is still hedging her bets just in case and is keeping it real for her little brother.
They have always been told that the parents have to pay Santa for the presents so that they appreciate why some of their friends get more, or less, than them. It also makes them appreciate the value of the presents. There have been a few close calls as the Alexa in the house keeps making announcements of things being delivered. Fortunately darling daughter has managed to remove all trace. Technology at it's best and worse.
My resolution again for 2025 is to be as kind as I can be - and to eat less chocolate. Last year I think I kept the first - I definitely didn't keep the second.
A lot of people are hoping that 2025 is a better one than 2024, it was a rough one for so many. If we all try to put a little more kindness in each day then it will be a happier one for everyone. Until next time, take care and be kind.

There is an extremely wide choice of UK ready-made curtains and an in-house seamstress service is also available. Roller blinds (for light and privacy), pillows, cushions and covers of all sizes, bed protectors, sofa beds, electric blankets, throws, bedspreads and more. Financial Advice from our family to yours
Key Dates for Financial Calendar
We trust you all had a lovely festive period and are looking forward to the New Year ahead. Let’s hope 2025 is full of nothing but happiness and prosperity. Given that we are at the very start of the year, we thought it was a timely opportunity to remind Spanish tax residents of their fiscal obligations throughout the year. Below are some key dates to look out for in the calendar.
Remember, the Spanish tax year runs in line with the normal calendar year, from 1st January to 31st December. This could be different to other countries systems; for example, the UK’s, which runs from 6th April to the following 5th April.
Modelo 720 Declaration: This is a non-taxable, worldwide asset declaration that needs to be completed by the 31st March 2025. Spanish tax residents should declare all overseas assets (outside of Spain) which have a value of 50,000€ or more, assuming no previous declarations have been made. The value taken for each asset is calculated as per its value of 31st December the previous year and includes bank deposits, investments, and property.
“La Renta” Income Tax Return: This is the generic income tax return which most people will have experienced in the past. The income tax return has to be completed by the 30th June 2025 but is often done as early as May, allowing accountants to get ahead of the game. Spanish tax residents have an obligation to declare and pay tax on any worldwide income which is outside of any exemptions/ allowances. Each person has a personal allowance to offset against income, which rises depending on age and other factors.
Wealth Tax “Impuesto de Patrimonio”/ Solidarity Tax “Impuesto de solidaridad a las grandes fortunas”: These taxes apply to both residents and non-residents alike but only affect individuals with significant estates. Any tax liability starts after the personal allowance has been deducted; set at between 500.000€ and 700.000€ per person, depending on which autonomous region you live in within Spain. There are also additional allowances for main residences. The declaration for the Wealth tax has to be done at the same time as La Renta, i.e. by the 30th June 2025.
It may be that some (or all) of the above declarations are not applicable to you given your circumstances but if you have even the slightest doubt, we would strongly recommend that you check your position.
Having lived and worked in Spain for over a decade, we are well placed to inform you of your obligations and to give you guidance on where you stand. Please do not hesitate to make contact if you think we can help.

MODIFICATION OF THE REGULATIONS GOVERNING TOURIST-USE HOMES: DECREE LAW 9/2024
OF AUGUST 2
The Valencian Government have introduced a new law modifying the rules relating to tourist homes. Below we set out the main points of the new law and how this may affect you. What are tourist-use homes?
They are properties rented for a fee, available for immediate occupancy, for tourism purposes, for a period of 10 days or less, counted continuously for the same tenant, and that have a favourable municipal report confirming urban compatibility for tourist use. Tourist-use homes must be rented in their entirety; renting by individual rooms is not permitted. However, when applying for a Tourist Licence, you must register the periods during which you intend to use the licence. For example, if you plan to rent your property under the Tourist Licence from July to September, the rental period should not exceed 10 days during that period. Outside this period, such as in October, as your Tourist Licence won’t be applicable, you may rent the property for 11 days or more.
For the purpose of physical identification and location of the property, each tourist home must be associated with a unique and individualised cadastral reference of the property, in addition to indicating the exact location of the home and displaying the tourist home emblem with the registration number and the logo of the Valencian Community.
How long is the registration in the Tourism Register valid?
It is valid for 5 years. To renew this registration for another 5-year period and continue operating, a new responsible declaration of renewal must be submitted with the express consent of the owner, within the month prior to the expiration of the registration period.
Conditions of the property:
The property must meet the minimum dimensions required for any residential-use property and ensure adequate lighting and ventilation. It must also provide an evacuation plan for the building at the door or emergency instructions in multiple languages, an elevator from the fourth floor upwards, a separate entrance for clients if located on the ground floor, and a 24hour customer service phone line.
Obligations:
• Municipal report confirming urban compatibility. This is a certificate that can be applied for
from the Town Hall.
• New responsible declaration every 5 years.
• Certificate from the homeowners' association stating that there are no objections to using the property for non-residential purposes, such as tourist rentals.
• Every property must have internal regulations, including community rules, conditions for the use of services and facilities, and the policy on the admission of pets.
Prohibitions:
• Renting individual rooms is prohibited.
• Renting for more than 10 days is prohibited under the license.
• Delivering keys through lockboxes located in public spaces is prohibited. What happens if I want to rent for more than 10 days?
If the property is rented for a period of 11 days or more within the period it is registered as a tourist property in the Tourism Register of the Valencian Community, a change in the operating period must be communicated. This will prevent the de-registration as specified in the tourism regulations.
Therefore, if it is rented for 11 days or more, it will no longer be considered a tourist property according to the current regulations. In this case, the rental will be governed by the terms agreed upon by the owner and the tenant, in accordance with Article 9 of the Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos.
What happens if I use the property for a different type of lease during the declared tourist period without notifying the change in period?
If the change in the tourist period is not communicated and the property is used for a different type of lease, it will be de-registered from the Tourism Register.
What happens if there is a change in ownership of the tourist-use property?
Whenever there is a change in ownership of the property (regardless of the registration date), the new owner must submit a declaration of responsibility for the change of ownership, as well as a report on urban compatibility issued by the City Council. What happens if I do not submit the new declaration of responsibility by the renewal deadline?
If the new declaration of responsibility is not submitted by the renewal deadline, the property will be de-registered from the Tourism Register.
Please contact us if you would like assistance in registering your property with the Tourist Authority.

PRP therapy may be the perfect solution for your eye problems.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment is considered one of the safest and most effective solutions for wound healing in the medical field. Now this treatment application has been extended to address ophthalmic problems or PRP.
Dry eye syndrome is a condition in which the tear glands do not produce enough tears. As a result, there can be constant eye irritation. Over time, the irritation causes inflammation and even scarring on the surface of the eye. The dry eye condition can affect the cornea and conjunctiva or the thin tissue covering the eyes and the inside of the eyelids.
PRP is obtained by using your own blood, it contains a concentration of platelets, growth factors and white blood cells suspended in the plasma. The serum also contains stem cells, bioactive proteins, and various other components. These elements when put together repair, and aid in tissue reconstruction and regeneration.
PRP eye drops, can help patients recover from eye diseases
• PRP growth factors repair the surface of the cornea and the membrane that covers it.
• PRP treatment provides faster corneal wound healing with less scarring,
• Vision becomes clearer after treatment is complete.
• Relieve eye inflammation and pain.
• Reverse the harmful effects of dry eye syndrome.
• PRP serum also acts as a lubricant to keep the eyes moist during repair and healing process.

Funny Questions You Shouldn't Be Afraid to Ask Your Builder:
1. Is it okay if I change my mind about the tiles/paint/electrics... again?
Why ask: Renovations are full of decisions, and sometimes you just need to see it one more time to be sure. Don’t worry - we get it. We’re pros at pivoting. Just don’t be surprised if we suggest building you a throne for all those big decisions you have to make!
2. If I bring coffee every day, will that speed up the work?
Why ask: While coffee might not technically speed up the build, keeping everyone caffeinated and happy never hurts. Builders appreciate a good brew as much as the next person and everyone knows coffee and snacks are the real fuel behind any project.
3. Can I keep that weird wall niche for my wine collection?
Why ask: Yes. Strange architectural quirks might look useless, but we can get creative and turn it into a talking point / functional feature. Plus, who wouldn’t want a cool LED-light-up wine nook? So yes, always ask us for ideas, we love to help.
4. Can you promise me my neighbours won’t hate me forever?
Why ask: From early-morning drills to waste skips in communal areas, renovations aren’t exactly neighbourly. We know how to keep things smooth – we always suggest contacting neighbours to let them know what’s about to happen, and inviting them round for a coffee once your project’s finished. It’s a great way of getting to know them better, while showing off your new kitchen in the process!
5. Do you think I can fit a slide in the house, or is that a bit much?
Why ask: Slides aren’t just for playgrounds! If you’re feeling playful (or have kids), we might just have a clever way to add something fun without compromising the design for a kids' playroom.
Construction projects might be serious, but there’s no reason you can’t ‘build’ in some laughs along the way.

TASMA 2025 PROGRAMME
COME FOR THE STORY
STAY FOR THE SOCIAL!
SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY OFFER for CATHERINE the GREAT, 5 February 2025 Catherine the Great By Andrew Prince In 1762. Empress Catherine II was the sole ruler of the Russian Empire, creating the most glittering court in Europe, and became the world’s greatest collector. From the arts to architecture and dazzling jewels, her craving for cultivating and accumulating the finest items formed the nucleus of the St. Petersburg Hermitage Museum. The unknown secrets of Catherine’s lust for art and her private passions will be revealed!
WEDNESDAY, 5 MARCH 2025: Who’s Andy Warhol? By Alejandra Carazo. Andy Warhol is remembered as the king of pop art who embraced celebrity and consumerism, and would become an American icon. Yet there is a lesser-known side to him: the shy, gay son of immigrants whose prolific and experimental artistic practice enabled a counterculture that would play a part in transforming modern art. Don’t miss this incredible success story!
WEDNESDAY, 2 APRIL 2025: J.S. Lowry: A Visionary Artist By Michael Howard. L.S. Lowry is one of Britain’s most famous artists, known for his portrayal of the human condition. In this lecture, Michael will present the case that his work is the visual counterpoint of T.S. Eliot’s poetry and can be claimed as the British Van Gogh. Too much? Listen to this fascinating presentation and decide for yourself!
WEDNESDAY, 7 MAY 2025: Francis Bacon By Frank Woodgate. Until his death in 1992, Bacon was regarded as Britain's greatest 20th Century artist, and his dramatic images can be exquisitely beautiful and shocking at the same time. Perhaps more than any other artist, he captured the darkness at the heart of the human experience. Come to learn how his work explores abjection, nihilism and hope!
WEDNESDAY, 4 JUNE 2025: The Age of Jazz By Sandy Burnett. Jazz is one of music's most important genres: a fascinating blend of rigorous structure, creativity, close-knit ensembles and imaginative improvisation. Back by popular demand, a musicologist and gigging musician, Sandy will shed light on jazz from the inside. His talk covers the early years of jazz up to WWII. Swing by one of our most entertaining lectures of the season!
WEDNESDAY, 1 OCTOBER 2025: The Architecture of Mughal India By Dr. John Alexander. Before the British arrived in India, the subcontinent was ruled by the Mughal Emperors. The stunning architecture and gardens of the 16th and 18th Centuries. left an indelible stamp on India’s cultural landscape. John weaves a compelling story of one of the most prolific eras in our cultural history.
WEDNESDAY, 5 NOVEMBER 2025: Art of the 21st Century By Anna Moszynska. How do we make sense of the art of our time? Anna examines recent trends that define the art of the new millennium. New media and technology now means that art from around the world plays a major role in museum acquisitions. Find out why “relationship aesthetics” have emerged as key words in our comprehension of The Arts.
WEDNESDAY, 3 DECEMBER 2025: The Adoration of the Magi By Geri Parlby. They’ve adorned our Seasons Greetings and taken pride of place in our cribs and school nativity scenes. Centuries of artists have been provided with a chance to add a dash of exotic colour into their scenes of the birth of Christ. Did you know the legend of the Magi links them with the first Christian artists?
Lectures are held at La Senieta, Moraira at 11am and again at the Casa de Cultura, Jávea at 7.30 pm.

A Key to Lasting Oral Health
Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer
Maintaining good oral hygiene involves more than just brushing and flossing your teeth daily. Regular dental checkups play a crucial role in ensuring your overall dental health and preventing potential problems before they become serious. Visiting your dentist/ hygienist once or twice a year might seem like a minor task, but it can have a significant impact on your oral health and overall well-being.
One of the primary benefits of routine dental visits is the early detection of issues like tooth decay, gum disease, plaque buildup, and oral lesions. Many of these problems can develop without noticeable symptoms until they reach an advanced stage. By having regular check-ups, your dentist can identify and treat these issues early, potentially saving you from pain, discomfort, and expensive treatments down the line.
Professional cleanings are an essential aspect of regular dental check-ups. Even if you're diligent about your oral care at home, there are areas in your mouth that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss brushes. Plaque and tartar can build up in these spots over time, leading to cavities and gum disease. During a check-up, your dentist or dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth, removing any hardened tartar and polishing them for a healthier smile.
Regular dental visits also provide an opportunity to discuss any changes in your oral health or habits, such as teeth grinding or sensitivity. Your dentist can offer personalised advice and recommend solutions to address these issues, helping you maintain optimal dental health.
Moreover, research has shown a link between oral health and general health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Regular dental check-ups can help you stay on top of these health issues by keeping your mouth in good condition, reducing the risk of complications associated with poor oral health.
Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer
So, regular dental check-ups are not just about keeping your smile bright; they are essential for detecting potential problems early, maintaining oral hygiene, and protecting your overall health. At Clinica Dental La Plaza we will save you time, money, and discomfort in the future, by making regular dental visits a vital part of your health routine. Every 10 years, legally, each ambulance needs to be replaced, in 2024, one new ambulance was bought and in 2025, two new ambulances will need to be purchased and equipped with the latest lifesaving equipment. Looking ahead, the association is poised to continue making a positive impact for many more years to come, ensuring that the people of Jávea always have access to fast, professional, and caring emergency services.
If you are not already a member, then join the 4580 existing members of the association for only 60€ a year for the whole family. You will be in great company, Classical Opera singer Montserrat Caballé was the 1000th member, Politician and Astronaut Pedro Duque was the 2000th member and Tennis Legend David Ferrer is the 3000th member.
Regular readers of this magazine will know that we personally have had need to call on the emergency response services of the Amigos Europeos on a number of occasions and they have been absolutely invaluable. Membership is highly recommended. Congratulations to Amigos Europeos de Jávea Ambulance Association on 25 years of service and lifesaving work! Happy New Year from Artificial Grass Spain
As we step into 2025, we take a moment to reflect on the challenges of the past year—particularly when it comes to our gardens. Last year, the dry weather left many outdoor spaces struggling. Established trees and lawns withered, and our already limited water resources were stretched even further. But with a new year comes a fresh opportunity to create greener, more sustainable gardens—and Artificial Grass Spain is here to help. It’s important to clear up a misconception: not all artificial grasses are made equal. With so many options available, it can be easy to get confused. At Artificial Grass Spain, we offer only the highest-quality products. Our grasses are crafted in Spain, designed to thrive in our local climate. They look and feel incredibly natural, providing you with the perfect alternative to traditional lawns, minus the hassle. We offer a wide variety of artificial grasses at different price points, ensuring there’s an option for every budget. Whether you’re looking to transform your garden or create a professional-grade sports area, we have the perfect grass for you. We also specialise in creating home golf areas, giving you the chance to practise your swing right at home. And if you’re on a tighter budget, we even offer a supply-only option, giving you the flexibility to lay it yourself.
One of the key advantages of our artificial grass is its practicality. It’s free-draining, allowing rainwater to pass through and nourish the ground beneath. It’s also child-safe and pet-safe, offering a safe, comfortable space for the whole family to enjoy. Plus, it’s an environmentally friendly choice—requiring no watering, no chemicals like weed killers and fertilisers, and no petrol-powered mowers. You’ll save time, money, and reduce your carbon footprint, all while keeping your garden looking beautiful all year round. In addition to offering high-quality grass, we also prepare surfaces for laying the turf. Whether it’s a terrace, garden, or even a sports area, we’ll ensure your surface is prepped and ready for the perfect finish.
As we move into 2025, we invite you to contact us and discover how we can help transform your garden into a practical, beautiful, and sustainable space. Jalon Valley Help & The Entertainers Thank You Shows
Jalon Valley Help and the Entertainers kicked off their season of Thank You events with carols in the square on a cold and crisp Monday evening, 9th December, in the church square in Jalon.
This was the first of three events, when JVH provide mince pies/chocolates and soft drink/beer/wine and the Entertainers perform to say thank you to everyone in the community for their support throughout the year.
As the church clock struck 6pm the Entertainers began by wishing Merry Christmas Everyone. We settled in our seats to enjoy a feast of nostalgic Christmas songs, including Santa Claus is Coming to Town, I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day, and carols with Gloria in Excelsis Deo and Silent Night. Feliz Navidad brought us back to the present before Pete, normally behind the sound & lighting console, changed the mood with a fun version of Dominik the Donkey.
Jo reminded everyone that the evening had been staged by Jalon Valley Help, our local medical support charity, who were most grateful for the support given throughout the year by our community. With your continuing support next year, at the shops/events or donations, JVH will be here to help anyone, irrespective of gender or nationality, who is in need in our community.
On behalf of JVH the Treasurer, Lorrie Harkness thanked the Entertainers for a wonderful show, the audience for their attendance on a cold evening. Article by Peter Sockett. Photo by Entertainers.
Visit Calpe’s archaeological treasure
One of the most important sites in Roman Hispania, the Baños de la Reina in Calpe, has reopened to the public after restoration and museum works.
Guided tours around the site resumed last month when visitors could go along the wooden walkways around two important areas. One leads to the thermal baths and the circular mosaic dating from the 4th century and the other to a hydraulic complex that includes a waterwheel and several villas, dating from the 2nd century.
As part of the works, a fence has been installed on Avenida de Europa, which will be the new access for visitors, and the damaged fences in other areas of the site have been repaired. The Roman Baños de la Reina is an incredible coastal enclave, sheltered by the iconic Peñón de Ifach. The sea and salt were important commodities for the ancient Romans, who built their houses on the dunes there. Following many years of neglect, the site inherited a fascinating legend that the pools were where the Moorish queen bathed, hence its name as the baths of the Moorish queen.
It is a super place to visit and to get to know more about Calpe’s important and lengthy history. The architectural design and the mosaics are considered to be among the most important in all Roman Hispania. Visitors can admire these as well as the thermal baths, Roman heating system and the Roman fish farms.
Thank you to everyone for making 2024 a bumper year

How to (Actually) Keep Your New Year's Resolution
Ah, New Year's resolutions. That magical list we all create, believing "this will be my year," only to abandon it faster than leftover holiday cookies. But this year is different. Why? Because you've got tricks to outsmart yourself—and they just might work.
1. Trick Yourself into Thinking It's Easy.
If your resolution is to work out daily, tell yourself it's only 5 minutes. Five minutes sounds manageable, right? Before you know it, you're a sweaty mess doing 45 minutes of lunges and wondering what went wrong. Little brain hacks can turn small steps into big progress.
2. Make It Public to Stay Accountable.
Tell your friends, family, or social media about your resolution. Here's the twist: aim high! Planning to hike more this year? Tell everyone you're training to climb your highest local mountain. The extra pressure will keep you going because no one wants to admit they've quit halfway. Plus, they'll be so impressed with your "big goals" that you'll inspire others.
3. Reward the Small Stuff.
Skipped dessert? Reward yourself with a gold star. Hit 10,000 steps? Treat yourself to your favourite coffee. Positive reinforcement works wonders—just make sure your rewards don't sabotage your progress.
4. Get a Buddy (or an Enemy).
A friend can cheer you on, but a rival can push you even harder. Nothing motivates like the fear of being outdone. Whether it's teamwork or friendly competition, you'll be more likely to stick with it.
5. Bribe Yourself Shamelessly.
Promise yourself a reward for every milestone. Save money? Splurge on something small. Hit your weekly kilometre goal? Watch that show guilt-free. Bribery isn't just for kids—it's motivational magic for grown-ups too. With these tricks, 2025 might just be your year. Or at least, you'll make it past January! Cheers to trying! If the trickery doesn't work, then why not get a life coach to really help you succeed. Set great goals. Invest in your future. Enjoy achievement! WhatsApp 676 507 791 for more information.

ECMOR Laboratory Update
Event Held at Denia Hospital
Denia Hospital recently hosted a presentation to showcase the latest updates from the ECMOR Laboratory, a pioneering research facility made possible through funding from Cancer Care Jávea.
The event featured key speakers, including hospital CEO Juan Puig Larrossa, head of oncology Dr. Joan Manel Gasent Blesa, and Dr. Joan Climent Bataller, director of ECMOR and associate professor at CEU Cardenal Herrera University.
Attendees were briefed on the laboratory’s accomplishments, ongoing projects, and future objectives, highlighting its contributions to the field of medical oncology. A thoughtprovoking presentation also explored the current landscape of oncology research and innovative approaches that promise to improve patient outcomes.
The ECMOR Laboratory represents a vital step forward in cancer research, but its continued success relies on sustained funding. Cancer Care Jávea has been a cornerstone of its development, and further community support would help ensure the lab can reach its full potential.
The event concluded with a reception, where attendees enjoyed tapas and the chance to connect with the team. The informal setting encouraged discussion, providing an inspiring look at the future of oncology research and the collaborative efforts needed to drive progress.

A very merry Christmas party with La Tuna de Xàbia!
On Friday 13th December 100 members of the Jávea U3A gathered at the Parador de Jávea for a cava reception, a singa-long to popular carols, after which dinner was served. The evening was hosted by Angela Chantry, leader of the Jávea U3A’s Spanish Culture & Cuisine group, who thanked all the members present for their support over the year, which had enabled her to make a donation of 450€ on their behalf to the children’s charity, Make A Smile.
The fun really began as La Tuna de Xàbia entered, singing Cumpleaños Feliz to member Derek Willis, who was celebrating his birthday at the party, and Derek blew out the candle on his cake to their musical accompaniment and a big round of applause. As always, La Tuna de Xàbia gave a really great performance, inviting some of the ladies to join them in a dance. Everyone waved their Spanish flags to show their appreciation and support for La Tuna de Xàbia, who are this year celebrating their 30 years’ service to the community of Jávea and beyond. The evening ended with a hearty rendition of Feliz Navidad as we waved them on their way.
Further information about the Jávea U3A, how to join, and details of the various groups and activities, can be found on their website: www.u3ajavea.com. Report by Angela Chantry.
Gandia Social Club and Oliva U3A Christmas Party
Thursday evening, 12th December, was Christmas party time for the Gandia Social Club and Oliva U3A with more than 130 members in their Christmas finery, there was even a Christmas elf, determined to have a good time. First it was time to catch up with friends with a celebratory drink, before the Brisas del Mare team served dinner – pre-selected main courses of beef/ chicken/ salmon were enjoyed by one and all.
With dinner well underway the Entertainers started their show with a selection of listening music to get the entertainment underway, with the tempo building gradually throughout the first set. Moving through Run and Wonderful World and with the main courses over the Entertainers opened up with Sunny, Country Roads and Islands in the Stream and when they sang Mustang Sally the dancers could wait no longer, and the dance floor started to fill.
During the break the raffle was completed by Julie Hayward, with many lucky members winning prizes. But, with dinner completed, the members were ready for dancing and as the Entertainers opened up with Proud Mary followed by Sway and the dance floor was full.
The selection of songs were perfect . What a night, good food and superb entertainment – I wish it could be Christmas every day!!!! Article by Peter Sockett and photos by The Entertainers.
Jalon Valley Help Donate to Gandia Men’s Hostel
Jalon Valley Help opened their season of Thank You shows at the Centro de Acogida San Francisco de Asis in Gandia at the beginning of December. This is always a very special event for JVH and their attendance was led by Richard Green, President, and Pam Brooks, events team member. Pam was delighted to be able to present to the monks who run the hostel 2,000€, which had been raised at the recent JVH Christmas Fayre in Jalon.
JVH also arranged for The Entertainers to put on a Christmas show for the residents. The group opened their performance with Merry Christmas Everyone, a message that was sung from the heart to the residents of the Hostel, who had gathered in the dining room for the show. The Christmas theme was continued and enthusiastically received with Mary’s Boy Child, Silent Night and the beautiful Carol of the Bells. Pete, who had joined the singers, from his sound console and lighting equipment, especially for this performance then gave us a rendition of Dominik the Donkey, which had everyone laughing and clapping.
The Entertainers also highlighted three beautiful Spanish songs Bailando, Quizas Quizas Quizas and Feliz Navidad, which were much appreciated by the audience. They concluded their performance with Jo & Marc singing the Prayer before the group closed with the beautiful song Love Shines a Light, and this performance certainly did, giving a joyous start to the Christmas season of JVH Thank You shows.
The residents left smiling and remembering their favourite songs from a wonderful show – I wonder how many were still humming along to Dominik the Donkey!!!

Focus on changing those dreams and aspirations into a reality. You need to look deeply inside yourself and have faith. Neptune is the leader of Pisces and has an ever watchful eye over you!
Gemini: Venus is conjunct with your North Node and the New Moon is in the eighth house of Capricorn. Both are indicating a stronger energy over financial matters on all levels. It could be success with a loan, a windfall or a that a gamble finally pays off!
Cancer: Don’t let a difference of opinion divide you and your family. Though you may like to leave your shell to give someone a nasty nip, it really isn’t worth it. Tensions have arisen because your sign is conjunct with a retrograde Mars calling the shots!
Leo: Your planetary leader, the Sun enters Aquarius on the 19th of the month with attention moving to the eleventh house of friendships and networking. Long term goals are favoured, but this is a time to give group activities the benefit of the doubt too.
Virgo: Virgos constantly thrive on perfection and this month it appears that many blocks have caused you to make alternative plans. With assertive Mars in retrograde in Cancer, progress is slow, but it’s better than nothing and you didn’t move the goalposts anyhow!
Libra: Time to focus on a relationship of the heart that is brought

about by a romantic Venus entering Pisces in league with the Karmic North Node. Time to make a decision based on your deepening spiritual energies and which way you really wish to go. Scorpio: The New Moon in Capricorn, compatible with Taurus, highlights long distance travel for either business or pleasure this month. Expect the unexpected when it comes to the yet unknown destination. Energies are favourable to make this trip! Sagittarius: Sibling rivalry appears to be getting worse rather than better and now something has to be done. Cancer is influencing retrograde Mars bringing frustration, jealousy and anger. Someone has to swallow their pride but won’t give in without a fight!
Capricorn: A Paradigm Shift is in the 2nd house of personal finance this month. A time to review and check your finances and all aspects of your financial dealings should be under the microscope, because something doesn’t add up somewhere along the line!
Aquarius: As the Sun leaves Capricorn a new interest is out there on the horizon, but it won’t gather momentum until the beginning of February. With your trusty leader Uranus shining a light on business, and your career plans, take things as they come: no hurry!
Pisces: Venus is exalted in Pisces and Neptune, your mysterious leader, is collaborating but playing his cards very close to his chest. The effect is that ideas and opportunities are being missed when this is a time for action: loud and clear!

Teulada Moraira Lions Club:
Celebrating a Decade of Service and Community Impact
In a world where small acts of kindness can spark significant change, The Lions organisation stands as a global force dedicated to service. With over 1.4 million members worldwide, it's the largest service organisation, uniting people passionate about making a difference in their communities. Locally, the Teulada Moraira Lions Club embodies this spirit, tirelessly supporting causes close to home through fundraising, volunteer work, and a well-loved charity shop known as "The Lions Den."
In 2024, the Teulada Moraira Lions proudly marked a milestone: the 10th anniversary of The Lions Den charity shop in Moraira. Since its opening in 2014, the shop has raised an incredible €287,524, all thanks to the donations, purchases, and volunteer hours contributed by the community. The Lions celebrated this anniversary in September 2024, expressing heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported their mission, from donors to customers and volunteers.
The funds raised over the years have enabled the Lions to champion a wide range of local causes. Here's how these donations are making a tangible difference:

More people move to Alicante
Alicante continues to be a popular place for people to live with an annual growth of nearly 10,000 residents for the second consecutive year. The population of the seaside city grew by 9,438, according to figures published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
It is the 10th largest city in Spain in terms of population with 358,720 inhabitants compared to the 2023 record of 349,282 people registered as living in Alicante. This puts it ahead of Bilbao, which has 348,089 inhabitants, but behind Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which has 380,436 registered inhabitants.
Alicante city officials are confident this growth will continue and expect more than 500,000 people will be living there around the year 2050. The reason for the growth is the city’s ability to attract companies and its popularity as a place for digital nomads to work remotely.
The largest cities, in terms of residents, are Madrid with around 3.4 million residents, Barcelona with 1.7 million and Valencia with around 800,000. These are followed by Seville, Zaragoza, Malaga, Murcia, Palma in Mallorca and Las Palmas.
The number of people living in the province of Alicante is also on the rise and it has overtaken Seville as the fourth most populated province in Spain. The top three provinces, in order, are Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.
Benidorm wins two tourism awards
Benidorm's popularity as a holiday hot spot never wanes, with around 2.7 million tourists visiting the beautiful beach resort each year. Now it has won two awards for its green and tourism initiatives.
The Costa Blanca resort won the Award for Innovation in Destinations – Most Sustainable Destination at the Smart Travel News Awards 2024 gala and also the Environmental Sustainability 2024 award at the MICE Comunitat Valenciana ceremony.
The Smart Travel News Awards recognise the innovation and leadership in the tourism sector. It presents awards to congratulate the work of companies and destinations whose projects are having a great impact in the fields of innovation and sustainability.
Benidorm's tourism model is based on a commitment to the environment and making the most of limited natural resources, such as water. Its sustainability initiatives include reducing its water consumption, recycling and creating more bike lanes and pedestrianised areas. It promotes an eco-friendly lifestyle by reducing people's reliance on cars - as a compact city, it is easy to walk from beach to beach and around the various tourist hot spots such as the Old Town - and improving air quality.
