Ask the Optician – Cataracts Louise Stone, Store Director, Specsavers Opticas Jávea and Calpe
13th of December is Día de Santa Lucia, Spain’s holiday in honour of the Patron Saint of the blind, so this month I wanted to deal with the important issue of cataracts, as they are the most common cause of blindness in the world today. Here is some general advice to help you to spot the signs and seek treatment rather than suffering with the symptoms unnecessarily. Q: What are cataracts? A: There are three main types of cataract: • A nuclear cataract – this causes gradual reduction in vision. • A cortical cataract – this may give rise to poor vision associated with seeing haloes around lights or seeing double with one eye. • Posterior subcapsular lens opacities – these tend to cause reduction in vision (especially for reading), susceptibility to bright lights and glare. Q: Am I at risk of developing them? A: As we grow older, the lens of the eye becomes less clear until, ultimately, a cataract that causes reduction in vision is present. Those with a family history of cataracts should be checked regularly as they are at higher risk of developing early cataracts. Q: What can I do to avoid cataracts? A: Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do to avoid them, as they are generally part of the ageing process. Too much sunlight may make people more susceptible to cataracts so it’s important to wear good quality sunglasses. Q: How are cataracts treated? A: They are treated very effectively by a common surgical procedure, so there’s no need to worry, simply make sure you have regular eye tests so the cataracts can be treated before they significantly affect your vision. Specsavers Opticas are located in Jávea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Guardamar on the Costa Blanca. To make an appointment for an eye test or find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es.

I was right in thinking it would be all round to ours for Christmas Dinner. I have got the essentials - pigs in blankets and chocolate and if the rest happens great and if not then everyone will still be happy in our house. With the two little ones close it will be great whatever happens. They, well big sister, has written her wish list and has given it to Santa. She asked for a Santa suit - that was all - still at 4 years old she has not been caught up in the 'must have' craziness of Christmas which is lovely. Baby brother doesn't have a clue yet so it is all still magical for them both which makes it magical for us too. I has been an amazing 25th year for Female Focus Publications with Female Focus magazine changing to the new glossy format, which has been so well received, QF Focus expanding to cover a much larger area South of Alicante and the two issues of Professional Services magazine continuing to go from strength to strength. We really are thankful for the continued support from readers, advertisers and contributers and will endeavour to make the coming year even better. Christmas preparations for your finances in 2019, two key areas to help you + Brexit!
www.femalefocusonline.com
by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain
The importance of Christmas for your families and friends is special however there is need for thought to your financial enjoyment for 2019 by checking on some basics before the year end. The scrooge of the Spanish tax laws is Modelo 720 and there is little opportunity to avoid it as it is the Law here in Spain and carries heavy penalties for getting caught out. If you are a Spanish tax resident and hold assets outside Spain in cash, investments or property in excess of 50K euros then advice is required to ensure if you have to report. The Christmas cheer is that there are ways to avoid this reporting, with cash and investments that meet Spanish Tax regulations and are approved by them, to find out more all you need to do is contact myself for a no obligation discussion and advice. £20 billon of pension money is sitting dormant in trust funds which belongs to hard working people who have NOT claimed their share or rights after working for a company where a pension was provided. This year we at deVere-Spain have brought joy and happiness to a large number of Costa Blanca residents who had frozen pensions sitting in UK, the numbers are staggering, one £117K and another £78K, in both cases they had no idea of any pensions which had value. All investigations are at our cost even if they turn out to be zero value. So, a simple phone call or email to me could change your financial outlook for 2019. Brexit will happen in March 2019 however you can ease the change by answering these questions: 1. What time will I spend in Spain in 2019? (+ 6months = Spanish tax resident) 2 Do I need to register on the Padron? 3 Where should I pay tax in 2019 UK or Spain? (the rules are clear; the penalties are harsh). Contact me for simple guidance at no cost! It might save you money and stress! Finally Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2019 to all Female Focus Readers! My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a person's work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM. It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the person's estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION. There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.

Montgó Chorale’s Christmas concert The concert, which starts at 5pm, is being held at the beautiful Loreto Church (also known as the Fishermen’s Church) in Jávea Port on Sunday 9 December. Under the direction of Jan Dewland, the choir will be singing many traditional and well-loved carols, some with audience participation, as well as other pieces such as extracts from Bach’s glorious Christmas Concerto - and where would Christmas be without a few items from Handel’s Messiah! Please come along and join the celebration. No booking required so be sure to arrive in good time as the seats go fast. As is the tradition, there will be a retiring collection in aid of Caritas, the church’s charity that does such important and worthwhile work supporting local families in need. Handel would approve! He was an enthusiastic patron of the UK’s first children’s charity, the Foundling Hospital in London, where he conducted the Messiah several times in the 1750s. He bequeathed a fair copy of the Messiah score to the Hospital – now on display in the Foundling Museum. If you require any further information, please contact Jan Dewland: by phone on 96 577 0973 or by email at dewlandjan@hotmail.com.

Have you already protected yourself with Spanish Wills? In reality you’ll be protecting yourself and your inheritors. Let us explain. Having Spanish Wills is not something you will need by law, but it’s recommended as your inheritors will be able to prove their right to your property and other assets in an easier way. Is your Will from your country of origin valid? Yes, but activating this foreign document will be a much more complicated process, as there will be a number of actions involved such as legal arrangements and official translations. The inheritance process will be much slower than compared to having Spanish Wills. Some important aspects Here are some of the main advantages of applying for your Spanish Wills: - In the Valencian Community there is a 100.000€ amount free of taxes for each inheritor. - The inheritance procedure must be done within 6 months, otherwise, your inheritors could be fined by the tax office. - Without your Spanish Wills, your inheritors would need to apply for all the documents from your country of origin, such as the Will and probate. - Having Spanish Wills is less expensive than activating your country of origin’s Wills. - All your Spanish assets will be covered by your Spanish Will. So what should you do? Only one thing: apply for your Spanish Wills in Spain. It is a very easy process that we can arrange for you. Basically, our approach consists of making an appointment with a notary, preparing the information that the Spanish Will should contain, and we’ll also be with you for the signing of the Wills. As mentioned earlier, having Spanish Wills is not compulsory, but it’s an effective way of getting protected and making the inheritance process much easier. Have you got any questions? Please give us a ring at 96 647 1898 or send us an email at admin@sun-lawyers.com. We’ll be waiting to hear from you!

To insulate or not insulate that is the question? Does your home feel too hot in the Summer and too cold in the Winter? Would you like to reverse that and feel comfortably cool in the Summer and be warm in the Winter? M3BT can help you‌ After the first Winter in Spain many new residents hastily organise for heating to be installed only to find that they still do not feel as “toastyâ€? as they would like in Winter. This is primarily due to the majority of Spanish homes having little or no insulation. The lack of insulation means your home could be colder inside than outdoors in the Winter sun. Initially, gas fires are a solution however, these merely introduce more water vapour into the already humid air, resulting in damp clothing and bed linen which is no good for anyone's health. A well-insulated house would mean, for those weeks the temperature feels cold and when you would need a source of heating, whatever means of heating you would use the insulation would maintain the warmth for longer and your bills will reduce. M3BT use an external method of insulation which means you do not need to leave the comfort of your home whilst the work is being done. The benefits of external insulation means no loss of internal space. With retrofitting it does not involve moving furniture or emptying the room. You can use the room as normal. An exterior fitted insulation system includes flexible waterproof render that means no cracking or damp issues. Asides your home looking like new, the exterior insulation protects the house walls from heat or cold and the house maintains a more regular temperature. This method of insulation is very energy efficient as most homes have only 25% of the insulation value. Plus, it is very cost effective as traditional methods or internal insulation require lining walls which are costly and messy to install. The external installation is fast, clean and efficient. If you would like more information or a quote for external insulation, then contact us today! Just give us a call on 618 084 156 or visit www.m3bt.com.

New petrol labelling at Spanish pumps New EU regulations came into force in Spain on 12th October this year and have affected the way in which petrol and diesel are labelled at refuelling pumps, meaning that drivers will have to get used to a new set of terminology in order to avoid putting the wrong fuel into their tanks. In order to unify the types of fuels used in all member countries of the European Union, as of October 12th, the European regulations on the labelling of fuels came into force. The days of “diesel”, “gasolina 95” and “gasolina 98” are numbered, and since October the symbols used will be squares, circles or diamonds with letters and numbers in them. Although it may seem a little messy, it is not so much. Let's analyse the labels and clarify what each of them means. The types of fuels are distinguished by the shape of the labels: round for gasoline, square for diesel and diamond-shaped for gaseous fuels. Inside the labels, you will find the specific denomination according to the component of each fuel. For gasoline, E5 (5% ethanol), E10 (10%) and E85 (85%) For diesel, B7 (7% biodiesel), B10 (10%) and XTL (synthetic diesel) The rest of fuels, H2 (hydrogen), CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). They aim to make the proportion of biofuel - fuel from renewable sources - more obvious, and make it clearer to customers that they are buying biofuel, made from recycled vegetable oil, as part of their usual tank fill-up. It is not necessary to be alarmed, just start to get used to them. Article supplied by The Garage in Javea. For all your car repair and servicing needs. Moraira - Teulada U3A Creative Writing Group launch Book of Short Stories The Moraira/Teulada U3A was formed in 2008 and, shortly after its inauguration, various groups were organised including the Creative Writing Group.
At the start of 2018, the 10th Anniversary Year of the Moraira-Teulada U3A, the current members of the Writing Group felt that they wanted to celebrate all the stories that had been written during that time - over 2,000 of them. They decided to do this by creating a small memento that, hopefully, would be enjoyed by many and also raise some much-needed funds for the U3A's chosen local charity. They thought it important to have a common theme running through the book that would hold the attention of readers and also show the eclectic mix of work from the current members in the Group. After a lot of discussion, they came up with the title "Lucky Escapes". Now, after months of writing, revising, planning, proof reading and designing, under the guidance of the Group Leader Dot Garrett, the book has been published, much to the enormous delight of everyone involved. It is available via 'Amazon' as a spectacular paper-back or on Kindle, and all profits will go to the "Raise a Smile" charity which is the Moraira-Teulada U3A charity for 2018.

Fantastic results in just 1 hour! No downtime. Treat yourself to the new APTOS thread lift this Christmas. As we age, the effects of gravity become more noticeable on our faces, especially as our facial support structure weakens and we lose facial fat. The areas that are generally affected are the eyebrows, areas around the eyes, the cheeks, the jowls and the neck. The result is a loss of a healthy "V" shaped face. Before, the only way to treat this was to get a facelift as there weren't very effective non invasive treatments to lift the loose skin. Threads tended to not be resistant enough to pull the skin successfully. However, now with newer, stronger and longer lasting APTOS threads there is an effective non surgical option that can lift and contour and suspend the sagging tissues on the face and neck. We, at Zen Smile Spa, are thrilled to offer the very latest and strongest APTOS resorbable thread lift technique. The APTOS thread lift procedure safely and instantly lifts up loose skin on the face and neck with minimal downtime. The result of the thread lift is immediate and even more noticeable after 1-2 weeks. The results will continue to enhance as the APTOS threads encourage the skin to produce even more collagen over the next several months which will also make the results of the thread lift last longer than the life of the threads themselves. For the right candidate, the thread lift can provide a pleasing, natural rejuvenation of the face with the benefit of no general anesthesia, rapid recovery, easy placement and very minimal cost compared to a facelift or necklift. The APTOS thread lift may be combined with other procedures, such as botox, injectable fillers, ultherapy, microneedling or skin resurfacing lasers. Ideal candidates for thread lift include: • People who do not want or have the time to have a facelift and want to look younger in 1 hour. • People with early signs of aging who need just a small lift. Good candidates are those patients who are starting to see some droopiness of the brow (that no longer lifts with botox), jowls appearing and general skin laxity. • People who have had some relapse from a previous plastic surgery procedure such as a facelift or neck lift. • People with facial asymmetries or have suffered Bell's Palsy or a stroke. A healthier pain free future CBD is now legal in the UK for medical use as well as in the majority of European countries (conditions apply about the maximum THC content of course) and many more people are hearing testimony from their friends and family about all the great benefits of taking CBD, which we already know, here in Spain. Put aside the myths and rumours associated with the word cannabis and reflect on the many unwanted and harmful side effects of conventional medicine. Taking CBD can help you to a healthier pain free future, simply by consulting a qualified professional like myself, dedicated to improving people’s overall health. As the market opens up, the danger increasingly exists of buying products from unknown sources, that often purport to be a certain strength and organic. However unless you know what you’re buying, how do you know what strength and dose you should be taking for your particular condition? Interestingly, I am also being consulted increasingly to treat people’s pets for their painful conditions. Many of us, including myself, have beloved dogs and cats and we know the cost of pills and potions when treating them. We would rather have the pain ourselves than see them suffer, as they often do in silence, as they can’t explain where or the nature and cause of their pain. Well good news! CBD is excellent for your pets, and can help them manage pain, especially for instance older arthritic animals with painful joints. It is common for dogs in particular with skin complaints, seizures and tumours to be improved by the use of the oil. It is well tolerated and has no known side effects. And now there is a huge amount of information being published from owners who say that previously their dog didn’t want to leave the house; but now they are back to full energy, and straining on the leash, after being treated with CBD. Animals with high anxiety become calmer and happier, and there are cases where tumours have shrunk, distressing skin conditions have disappeared completely, and seizures have stopped. The list is becoming increasingly extensive. As with people, I treat each animal individually taking into account their age, their weight, the condition they have and the medication they are already on before prescribing. A lot of people take better care of their pets than they do of themselves. Let me help you to help them, come in and see me for a free no obligation consultation, or call Mirjam on 692 320 121, you’ll be pleased you did!

Osteopathic treatment for arthritis Do you have an arthritic hip or arthritis in the knee and having a hip replacement surgery or a new knee is not what you want to do…..not yet…..but you think you will have to live with the pain as long as you can bear it before going into surgery? Osteopaths treat arthritis and can relieve pain. The arthritis is there and will not go away, it’s wear and tear and inflammation around the joint. But osteopathic treatment can help reduce the pain and help you move around more easily. Arthritis is caused by wear and tear through normal ageing but it can be accelerated and come on much earlier in life through heavy and repetitive overuse of the joints. Accidents (trauma) can also trigger the process. Arhritis can also affect the spine and is then related to as spondylosis. This is common in the lower back (lumbar) or in the neck (cervical spondylosis). FF
Osteopathic treatment Osteopaths help by gently loosening the shortened muscles around the area, improving flexibility in the joint and promoting better blood circulation. Response to any treatment depends on the severity of the arthritis. Stretching and activity will help, but it can be difficult to focus your efforts on a very specific part of the body in the most appropriate way. I can also help you with strengthening muscles that have become weak by showing you simple exercises to do at home. Help yourself! You can do a number of things to alleviate arthritic conditions, but it is a balance between using and aggravating. My advice is that you: - Stay active – gently encourage the affected joints to move into the painful area. If possible, select exercise which puts less weight through the joint to move it. Swimming or cycling is good. If even walking is painful, we need to look at your daily routine and start treating the joint as I explained above. - Get treatment. Some patients come regularly to begin with, then only once a month when the pain has reduced. - Watch what you eat. Some food can increases arthritic pain….. like tomatoes! There are many others which I can tell you all about or you can google ‘Food to avoid when you have arthritis’. - Be positive. Remember, many people who have arthritis on their x-rays, are symptom free! Why not give a CHRISTMAS GIFT VOUCHER to a friend or family member in pain. Do People Really Want to Get Cosmetic Surgery for Christmas? Okay, so Men, if you are reading this article it might be wise to tread carefully if your partner has never mentioned anything about wanting to have a cosmetic procedure. You certainly don't want your loved one to be offended and assume you’re implying that they don’t already look attractive. Perhaps best to stick with jewellery until you get a better idea of how your partner feels about it, because just like any gift, you only want to give presents that you're sure will be well-received. On the other hand, cosmetic procedures are no longer a taboo subject, and many people today are comfortable talking about having work done, in part because it is becoming more and more common. In the UK alone, the overall number of cosmetic surgery procedures has increased by more than 100% since 2000. So in many cases many excited recipients are replying: "Cosmetic surgery for Christmas? Yes please! " The Christmas holiday season can be an optimal time for having cosmetic procedures. It’s especially ideal for people who would rather not field questions about their absence from work, or talk openly about their procedure. It is also colder, so no-one asks why you are covered up, while the procedure heals. Plus, having work done over the holidays means you can kick off the New Year with a head start on your resolutions and look better than ever. Why not start the year off feeling confident that you're putting your best face (and best body) forward come January 1? So, what’s underneath those trees? The most requested surgeries for Christmas are to do with Facial Rejuvenation (fillers, injectables, microdermabrasion), Breast Enhancement (augmentations, reductions, lifts), Liposuction (lipo, body contouring), Face and Neck Lifts (flatter and tighter appearance), Tummy Tucks (restoring a slim waistline), and Brazilian Butt Lifts. The most important thing to consider before any cosmetic surgery, gifted or otherwise, is to choose a cosmetic surgeon who is skilled, qualified and experienced. You need to find someone who makes you and your loved one feel comfortable and confident from your very first visit, and you'll be sure to enjoy beautiful results as you enter the new year in style. Dr Poole in Jávea is a specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery. He is also a certified Family Doctor / GP. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, however small, then there is an invitation waiting for you. Feel free to call into the clinic and find out about all the different services and procedures - and don't forget that your first consultative visit is completely free. Clinica El Arenal. The Colina Club family would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year
As the year draws to a close we would like to welcome all our new residents who will be celebrating their first Christmas with us. Also mark with sadness the residents that have departed during the year. It is an especially sad year for us at The Colina Club as we said good bye to William 'Bill' Milner who passed away in October. Bill was one of the very first residents to move into the Colina Club 27 years ago. Good bye to a wonderful gentleman.
Nestled in an exclusive urbanisation on the lower slopes of the tranquil hills surrounding Calpe on the Costa Blanca area of Spain, The Colina Club offers the residents a home to enjoy the stunning views over Calpe to the Mediterranean Sea and the famed nature reserve of the PeĂąon de Ifach. The Colina Club was the first purpose built Continuous Care Complex on the Costa Blanca and today it is still going from strength to strength. It consists of 48 one and two bedroom Independent Living Apartments and a fully licensed 20 room Nursing and Rest Home with private en-suite rooms. The Colina Club is all about providing families with peace of mind and the security of excellent care and enjoying life in your senior years. Purpose built for senior living, the apartments have been specifically designed so that both the ground and first floor apartments have level access from the parking area directly outside.
The Club runs its own free minibus service to Calpe town, five days a week. Every other Saturday the mini bus goes to the local markets. There are regular mini bus services to Iceland and Lidl. It really is the perfect place for seniors who want to retire to sun, enjoy a level of independence, whilst safe in the knowledge that qualified care is literally on their doorstep. The good thing about living at The Colina Club is that you can keep your independence yet still have all the medical back-up available, including your own personal help alarm, monitored 24 hours a day in case of an emergency, and these services among others are all included in the price of your monthly rental. So why not call today and arrange to come and see for yourself as places are now much sought after and limited. Telephone: 96 583 5226. Website: www.colinaclub.com.

Areas covered by chevrons – designed to keep vehicles safely apart – also seem to have the same magnetic ‘Cornish cream tea to a wasp’ appeal to those behind the wheel.
Watch out; the secret’s out!
Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. The Lapland Express
THE man in red and white has already started popping up across the Costa Blanca reminding us all of the magic of Christmas – even though the first recorded sighting of Father Christmas this year was actually ahead of Guy Fawkes Night. Every year along the coast charities have to tweak the calendar to get in a festive fair ahead of 25 December – there are only so many weekends available after all - and Santa is often the star attraction; the differences in height and build, obviously important to adapt to the different sized chimneys around the globe. Yes, Mr Claus, we at Female Focus believe! The high-speed commute from Lapland seems to work well; the reindeer are left to prepare for the big night and it saves everyone having to get carrots and mince pies ready too early. Santa Claus can still work a crowd and simply by appearing he is a magnet for kids. Favourite so far this year was a little girl zooming in like an exocet missile; tugging at the red jacket and once getting his attention, simply announcing her important 2018 manifesto (take note Theresa May): “Father Christmas... I have been a REALLY good girl this year.” And he doesn’t blink an eye at suddenly having to morph into Papa Noel for excited Spanish youngsters, no translation needed after all for a jolly ‘Ho, ho, ho’...
Careful now... there’s a zebra crossing
PEDESTRIAN crossings are where people can get from one side of the road to another safely without the need for a whole troop of Boy Scouts; and a necessary part of modern life and town planning. British motorists are used to a prohibition on parking each side of the black and white markings of the zebra itself, here in Spain cars are left right up to the crossing itself. However, anyone living in this part of the world for any length of time knows that our hosts are very adept at creating spaces to leave their vehicle – and not just the double parking while ‘popping’ into a shop, bank, or post office. Out walking the dog one morning and looking to utilise a crossing to get to the other side (there’s an old joke there somewhere) we took a step forward and three back as a car slowed but then pulled into the kerb right across the zebra itself. On go the hazard lights, clunck goes the central locking and driver heads off leaving one man and his dog to squeeze between bumpers and hope for the best. Dog looks up at master with a questioning look – not the wideeyed cute one in the hope of getting a treat... more of the ‘modern life is rubbish’ version – and grumpy owner suddenly wishes he was treated by a flying visit by Darth Vader rather than the Green Female Focus December 2018
GRAND old British newspaper The Times has asked its readers to “raise a glass of Rioja to the Spanish” to toast the news the country is set to have the longest life expectancy in the world; soon to be table toppers; even pipping the Japanese, grand masters of longevity. The jealousy is in the headline: “They drink, they smoke, so why are the Spanish living so long?” The answer is one of lifestyle and good news for us expats who adopt the habits of the natives rather than remain in the ‘socks-with-sandals’ brigade. Naturally, this includes the much-hyped traditional Mediterranean diet – including red wine – said to be the underlying reason why these people are living longer; adding up to 25% on a life by incorporating fresh produce; as well as seafood, fruit and vegetables, nuts, olive oil, and tomatoes. The Spanish also take a daily stroll, take a siesta after the main meal of the day (luncheon), work hard but take more breaks, and eat ‘tapas-style’ at night which is apparently beneficial to health. The green-eyed Thunderer also notes the Spanish have more sex. Even the language scores highly (but takes practice, obviously) – scientists say Spanish is considered the most joyful with the greatest frequency of upbeat words being used; although boffins fail to mention anything about volume. This is all food for thought. However, given the time of year readers will be forgiven for lapsing into bad habits for the coming winter feasting. Have a good one!

Open Air Carol Singing – Jávea Port (Opp Miramar Hotel) 12 Noon,
Friday 21 December
The shops are stocked with turron, tangerines, mince pies, chocolate and Christmas cards. The season is upon us, the season when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, when families, tradition and celebration are at the forefront. Carol singing takes place all over the world and here, in Jávea, is no exception. This year, our tradition of open air carol singing continues and will take place at 12 noon on Friday 21 December at Jávea Port, opposite the Miramar Hotel. You are all invited to join Jávea International Baptist Church to celebrate Christmas, by singing carols both old and new. Bring your family, friends and neighbours to enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate at one of the nearby cafes in the port and get into the real spirit of Christmas. There will be collection boxes available should you wish to give a donation, which, this year, will be given to J.A.M.M.Y. (Jávea Acacia Mazwi Mission Year). This is a charity venture supporting the Acacia movement in Zimbabwe, whereby Christian missionaries Graham and Sarah work under extreme hardship and danger to provide basic needs for the local community in Mazwi village, and all monies collected goes direct to them. Jávea International Baptist Church, under Pastor Steve Hall, is an English speaking church situated in the Pueblo, in Calle Favara, just up from the main underground car park. The weekly Sunday Service is at 10.30 a.m. at the Church Centre. There will also be a Carols by Candlelight Service at the Church Centre on Sunday 23 December at 6.30pm and a Christmas Day Service on Tuesday 25 December at 10.30am. Jávea International Baptist Church is a lively Church with many activities available during the week, which include a very popular walking group every Tuesday and the “Place for Friendship” cafe which is open every Thursday (market day), where everyone can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with cake and biscuits. Please access our website www.javeabaptist.es for directions to the Church Centre and for more detailed information on all activities and events available, or telephone: 96 579 5847. We look forward to seeing you all at the open air carol service at 12 noon on Friday 21 December. Please wear something red to add to the Christmas atmosphere!

Unlock These Hands Written by Ray Wilcox I was born in Peckham, South London. I joined the UK Prison Service in 1975. We moved to Spain in 2005 and I spend my time writing, playing guitar and, with my wife Margaret, planning our next holiday. Given the present crisis in UK prisons there is increasing interest in what actually goes on behind the walls, how tax payers money is spent or wasted depending on the point of view of the reader. Unlock These Hands is unique because I'm unaware of any other fictional book about prisons apart from Lock-Down Blues where the author, who has not been a prisoner, has actually talked the talk and walked the walk. The Story The staff of HM Prison Raymar, situated in the North West of England, are trying to move on from the catastrophic events earlier in 2004 when a prisoner was murdered during a hostage incident. The Governor, with an eye to the future, amongst other things, embraces an idea which he hopes will restore harmony and drive the prison forward. The new Special Secure Unit, a national Prison Service resource, has one resident, a notorious serial killer who delights in bragging about his favorite victim, a female prison officer. A life sentence prisoner, who has a special relationship with Prison Service Headquarters, receives devastating news and takes drastic action. Illegal drugs, currency and entertainment on the wings, are in short supply until the London underworld step in. The vulnerable are sucked into situations where they find, to their cost, that there is no turning back. Tension can break a man. Violence costs nothing for those with nothing. The price of a life can be as cheap as a promise, as easy as a misunderstanding. Will the Governor succeed or will corruption plunge Raymar into darkness... Unlock These Hands is available on Amazon. I have a number of copies and can be contacted at raywilcoxauthor@gmail.com and www.ray-wilcox.com.

Transform your hair with Nano Rings! Nano ring hair extensions not only lengthen your hair but can also thicken the appearance of your hair and keep it looking natural! Nano rings are a recent development in hair extension application techniques. The method has been developed in a quest to find the most undetectable methods of installation. The main ‘pro’ as it were, is that their bonds are incredibly tiny. In fact they’re around 90% smaller than a micro ring, resulting in being crowned one of the smallest bonds available. Not to mention being superb at being discreet when fitted correctly to the hair. Nano-ring hair extensions are a popular choice for those looking to have extensions permanently applied for longer term wear. These hair extensions are quick and easy to apply. Strand by strand, a micro loop extension is applied to a similar sized piece of your own hair around 1cm away from the scalp. Tiny, silicone lined aluminium rings hold the extensions securely in place, without the need for any harsh glues or chemicals. The nano ring itself (as the name suggests) is tiny and less likely to be noticed. Plus it is more comfortable, especially for those with finer hair. So long as the natural hair isn't excessively oily or soft, the rings will secure perfectly. Nano ring hair extensions should last when cared for at home and with regular maintenance, anywhere between three and four months, which is a much longer time than other hair extension methods. The great thing about this technique is the hair itself is re-usable! The photos alongside show before, during, after and a week after application. KRU have a special offer for a half head of Remy hair extensions (the best quality) for only 385€! Also advance notice of a special offer for January! KRU will be launching CHROMAPLEX™. Improving the hair's condition from the inside out, CHROMAPLEX™ helps strengthen damaged hair fibres, minimises breakage and aids in the improvement of overall condition without affecting development time, neutralisation or lifting. KRU will be including this for FREE with every colour booked in for January! Normal price 15€! To receive this offer please make sure you mention Female Focus. To book an appointment please call KRU on 96 646 3970 or call in to the salon on Avenida del Pla in Jávea.

All We Want For Christmas is... In October we wrote about the brand new ambulance that we are adding to our ambulance fleet. And we asked for your kind help to equip it when it arrives. The good news is that the ambulance has now arrived, and one local organisation has kindly offered to help purchase one of the vital lifesaving pieces of equipment. But this still leaves SO MANY ITEMS that we still need in order to kit the new ambulance out properly. Our business does not receive any Ayuntamiento or Government funding. Yes, you will have seen us partaking in some commercial activities where we charge to supply our ambulance services to the local fiestas, concerts, public events and so on, but essentially we exist by relying on the annual €50 fee paid by our members, and also upon other donations. We thought it would be interesting for you to see the figures of how much it costs to put each new ambulance onto the road: €24k Basic cost of the vehicle €29k Transformation of the basic vehicle into an ambulance including Strengthening, Protection cage, Stainless Steel interior, Cupboards, Lighting, Fittings etc €14.5k Professional Oxygen Machine €5k Professional Defibrillator Machine €3.5k 4 different types of Stretchers... Rigid, Flexible, Inflatable, Scoop €1.4k Volumetric Pump €1.2k Capnograph Monitor and over 200, yes over TWO HUNDRED more items like Breathing Masks, Fixed Oxygen Supply, Antibacteria Kits, Cervical Collars, Immobilisation Devices, Obstetrical Kit, and so on. Obviously because of the restriction on article space we are not going to list all the 200 items! In total, the estimated cost of the fully equipped new ambulance will be around €90,000. So you can see why we really do need your help, please. This is why we are again asking if you are reading this and are connected with any Charity, organisation or group, please can you bring us to the attention of your treasurer or whomever is responsible for your fundraising. We do not ask for money, but the purchase of a piece of equipment could be lifesaving, not just at Christmas time, but all year round for many years to come. Why being a member of Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is so important Finally, as a reminder to all readers, every one of the ambulances in our fleet is equipped as we have described above. And this is why being a member of AAEdJ is so important. We are not like Spanish State ambulances which do not carry anything like the lifesaving equipment that we do. Our ambulances are akin to Mobile Intensive Care Units and really can mean the difference between life and death. As a member we will come straight to you, either at your home, or wherever you may need us. Membership of the AAEdJ is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. To join, telephone and speak with Laure Bolufer, the AAEdJ Registration Manager on 96 579 6099 (Laure works from 10am to 1pm every weekday). The AAEdJ ambulance service covers almost all of Costa Blanca North and will come straight to you wherever you are. ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA. Avenida Juan Carlos 1, No 69, 03730 Javea. Crunchy Roasted Chickpeas Crunchy, crispy chickpeas are a great tasty and healthy snack for the festive season. Chickpeas are one of the oldest legumes which have been harvested and eaten for centuries. A View From The South
Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. Hi Everyone... As Christmas draws near may I take this opportunity of wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. As per my norm at this time of year I will once again dispense with my usual column and instead will share with you my 12 Wonders of the year past. 1. You may remember that at about this time last year I was taken unwell with a heart attack and had to have simple surgery (if there is such a thing) to repair arterial damage that had been caused by a viral attack many years previously. My first Wonder of this year of course therefore has to be ...The Wonder of the skill and professionalism of the people of the Spanish Health service as a year later I am still up and around. I am still able to spout my views and opinions and to always take a balanced view of the political landscape and social mores of Britain, the land of my birth, as it is run into the ground by the most ineffective and useless Prime Minister that politics has ever seen ... how's that for balance! 2. On another note ...I am certainly a person that on occasion can be known to suffer from a bout of melancholy (sadness ..depression etc). I used to think that as an individual, perhaps as I aged the ‘melancholyness’ would get worse ...imagine how happy I now am to realise that Wonder of Wonders, good old Jose Mourinho beats me hands down in the melancholy stakes ...miserable so and so. 3. Now I am not a fan of tennis ...Oh I admire the skill and the pace of the game, but as an inner city Londoner, myself and the game of tennis were divided by essentially two things. The first being the lack of money to be able to book a court at Battersea Park Tennis courts, and the second thing of course was a working class complete lack of interest in middle class pastimes. So, you can imagine my Wonder when I watched in amazement as Serena Williams blew her top at the US open Tennis Championships over some perceived slight by the Umpire. My Wonder of course is that people bother to watch Women’s Tennis at all. My Dear Mum used to call Women’s Tennis "Bat and Ball" and that’s exactly what it is. Women’s Tennis is played for half as long as the Men’s game ...it is half as athletic and is played at half the speed ...and for all these differences the prize money is the same. Now that is something to Wonder about. 4. Now you, dear reader must by now be wondering why I haven't engaged in a little Political commentary ...well here goes. As this year comes to an end I do have to wonder at the absolute folly of Brexit (My Opinion) and how this act of folly is being managed by the most useless bunch of political nitwits that it has been my experience to witness. Jacob Grease Mog ...Dimwit Davis ...Dominic Rabid and of course Boris NHS Johnson ...all led by the Maybot ...God help us all. 5. On a positive Wonder .. I really do Wonder at the time and effort and sheer humanity of the people who run the myriad of animal charities that operate over this part of Spain. I cite the work of the "Easy Horse Care" Rescue Centre. The work they do in taking in and saving these beautiful animals from sometimes dire circumstances is in itself a wonder to behold. This animal welfare Female Focus December 2018
6. While on the topic of God’s creatures ...I must ask, why in a supposed civilised wealthy Western European country ……as I type, more than 440 human beings have died on the streets of Britain this year through sleeping rough. These people have been found dead in shop doorways and camping in tents in woodland. The Wonder is that without the work of voluntary organisations the numbers would be higher. Where is the common humanity toward others who need help? 7. On the theme of common humanity ...I really do Wonder just how long it will be until the Orange terror that is Donald Trump can go on before he sets in motion a train of events that may lead to a World catastrophe? 8. Being something of an environmentalist, I did have to wonder what on earth goes into expensive men’s underarm sprays. My eldest son was over on a visit with his family and every time he sprayed under his armpits with posh deodorant the blooming smoke alarm went off. In fact, I have had to change the smoke alarm as the underarm spray rendered it useless. 9. Now I do like to watch the occasional TV show ...I am not a soap lover and I detest the X factor ...that said I do like to watch The Chase. It is not only that you can play the game at home that makes me such a Chase fan, it is also the nice easy going charm and wit of Bradley Walsh that make the show so watchable. To this day I indeed still Wonder at the scene when Bradley Walsh was sent into raptures by the "Fanny Schmeling" question. 10. On a game show note I have tried on more than one occasion to watch the show "Pointless" ...I do now concede defeat and do in fact really Wonder at what I perceive to be the utter pointlessness of the show. Alexander Armstrong must be the smuggest person on television as he announces to the losing contestants ...you are so very unlucky ...he then turns to the camera and says ...but you at home watch tomorrow and see if anyone can win our cash prize of Yuk ...the cash prize is usually about 1,000 sterling...and that for a show that is on the best part of a hour. Oh yes, it’s pointless alright. 11. Almost at the end of my Christmas Wonders ...but before I go it would be sheer folly for me not to Wonder at the Madness that is Brexit, as massive an act of National self harm that any Country has bought upon itself. Ask yourself, if it’s such a good thing to do then why has Nigel Farage sought and received German passports for two of his sons? Why has Jacob Rees Mog moved two massive hedge funds to Dublin? And why has Dyson decided to build his electric cars in Singapore? It’s a massive con job ...any Government worth its salt would not have entered into such an act of self harm ...and before you Dear Reader start to ramble on about Democracy etc... let me remind you that a third of the British electorate did not vote and people like me were denied a vote as I had lived in Europe for ‘too many years’ years at the time of the vote... My real concern is not about how Brexit will affect me ...No, I am fully aware that it is us older generation that have mucked up Britain ...my concern is for the younger generations that follow being denied the rights of their fathers in travel, education and work opportunity, as well as the sheer character building that meeting and enjoying other cultures can bring. 12. My last Wonder for this year comes in the form of a plea for the World to be saved from the curse of crap politicians of all political colours. I have always Wondered at the "doff the cap attitude" of the British people ...I await the day when I can Wonder at the people of Britain telling the establishment what they can do with the ruling classes and the Monarchy...The sound of tumbrils along Whitehall would be a sound to Wonder at.
Happy Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year to you all.

Costa Blanca CBBA Business Association Businesses You Can Trust
Living as an expat here in Spain is truly wonderful - until things go wrong! Maybe the boiler isn’t working, you need some legal advice, if you’re in business you need some urgent printing, your car insurance quote is too much. The answer is to find a professional, trustworthy, and legal business or tradesman (tradesperson!) to get your things fixed. The question is: who to turn to that you can trust. You may have heard our ad on Bay Radio. If you need help, contact one of our members! The Costa Blanca Business Association (CBBA) put simply is a business networking and referrals organisation. The CBBA currently comprises 22 members covering a wide range of goods and services, supplying businesses and people living here in the Costa Blanca. It was set up approximately 10 years ago and has become a trusted and established source of businesses you can turn to and trust. Our membership is diverse (see below). So why consider joining?
Businesses You Can Trust It’s often said for every legit builder there are twice as many running around in beaten up white vans, some still on English plates, doing everything cash, totally uninsured if they break something, and not available if the job isn’t done properly. We can’t say how true that is, but we can say, when you use a member of the CBBA, you can be assured that they are operating legally, and will stand by their work. All our members are ‘vetted’ to ensure they’re ‘in the system’ and paying taxes. In short, a CBBA member is trustworthy, professional and honest. And if things go really wrong, then we can exert pressure to make sure issues are sorted properly. Amata fair focuses on Christmas In the month of December Amata, the regional craft association, is organising a special Craft Fair where you can buy (or order!) those special, hand crafted gifts for Christmas, that are so difficult to find anywhere else. The fair is a four day event in the Port of Jávea from 6 to 9 December. Amata specialises in original craft work: in a fair organised by Amata you won’t find cheap import or factory made products: everything is hand made by the participants. And not only that: the organisers also make sure that every stall offers something different, so that you can find original presents for all your loved ones: for children, youngsters, men, women and even for pets! And, as all participants are real craft people and most of them bring their tools along, they can take special orders if you don’t find what you are looking for. The fair is in the Port, on the seafront (you can find the exact spot in Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/rx5uWDjHiYs or look for Feria de Artesanía Jávea), during the long weekend of 6 to 9 December, both 6 and 8 December are bank holidays. Opening times are from 11am until 9pm, which means that they don’t close at lunchtime. On 15 and 16 December, they move to the South of the province, setting up their stalls in the centre of San Fulgencio. For more information you can ring the organisers on 639 979 678 - they speak English.

We've got your back, Millie Millie is 13 years old and is a keen dancer, loving all types of sports and gymnastics. People who are acquainted with Millie know how active she is, and she is always out and about on her roller boots and scooter. Millie was first diagnosed in 2015 with severe scoliosis. Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine, on Millie's last x-ray the curve of the spine had elevated to a degree of 60/65. She has worn a back brace for the past 3 years to sleep in but unfortunately this has not worked. The rehabilitation specialist said surgery is now the only option. On the healthcare system, they only use the Harrington procedure which is a metal rod fusion. This procedure does work but would drastically limit Millie’s flexibility and she would never be able to dance or do gymnastics again. The Traumatologist said that she would also need to wear a brace for 22 hours a day whilst she continues to grow and they would only be able to operate on her in a few years time. As parents Emma and Steve want to give Millie the best opportunity in life that she deserves. Emma and Millie have met with Dr Juan Carlos Olaverri who is a private surgeon in Barcelona and is one of only 20 surgeons in the world who perform an alternative procedure. He performs the VBT - Vertical Body Tethering and ASC - Anterior Scoliosis Correction procedures which are a lot less invasive and recovery is much quicker. This will allow Millie to continue to grow hopefully without any further problems. The operation is lateral, but instead of a metal rod it incorporates a flexible cord into the side, which will allow the spine to straighten more as she grows. Dr Olaverri has advised that this procedure needs to be done sooner rather than later due to her age and expected growth spurts. The surgery is scheduled on the 4th of February 2019 and it will be necessary for Millie to be in hospital for 7 days, and then a further 2 weeks nearby in an apartment for aftercare from the surgeon. The cost of this procedure is in the region of 60,000€. A go fund me page (https://www.gofundme.com/millie-spinal-operation) has been set up following the encouragement of family and friends wanting to help with donations and organising charity events to help fund the procedure. The support from local businesses and from the general public has been outstanding and already there are many events planned in the forthcoming weeks and months including a Charity Golf Day, a Christmas Fun Day, A Talent Show and much more. All the events are shown on the Facebook page “We've got your back Millie” where there is also a link to the gofundme page. If anyone has any ideas of fund raising suggestions, merchandise or ideas that could be auctioned or donated then please get in touch with Emma Grundy on 645 297 963 or Steve Grundy on 645 376 946. If there is anything that you can do or help with in any way it would be greatly appreciated.

Summer 2019 is on its way! www.charlesworthgardens.com
Some of you might be thinking, we haven’t even got Christmas out of the way yet, but that’s my point. Before you blink Summer will be looming on us again. That’s not to forget that our beautiful Springs and Autumns are second to none and really allow you to enjoy our outside spaces. Give yourself the ultimate reason to get into the garden and enjoy your alfresco living. Charlesworth Gardens will create the perfect Summer kitchen for eating and entertaining. A Summer kitchen can be as complex or as simple as you like. We work with all the major BBQ suppliers in the area so you can give your Summer kitchen that real deal cooking experience which you and your friends will love. What about adding an entertainment system so music or television can be enjoyed outside. It’s not just BBQs, you can have a pizza oven, and believe me as someone who makes all homemade pizzas, right down to the dough, they are amazing and fun to make. You will never want to eat takeaway again. We bespoke design and make everything you require, if you want it, we can do it. A fire pit can be stunning especially at this time of year where you want to sit outside but the temperature is just a little on the cool side, so wrap up next to a safe outdoor fire pit to give you back more outside time in your garden. Let Charlesworth Gardens help you bring your ideas to life or design something you could have never imagined. We are specialists at working with you and your garden to create the ultimate spaces to enjoy all year round. Plant of the month. I was recently in a customer’s garden and even though this was a plant I planted, I forgotten how nice it is, as it’s not for every garden. Vitex Trifolia This is a wonderful flowing plant, if you have room and like plants that sprawl then this is for you, with its purple foliage and flowers it fills spaces that other plants just can’t. It’s inexpensive and doesn’t require a great deal of attention but as said, don’t plant it in a small garden it will gobble up space very quickly. It can then be pruned back hard annually to keep it tamed.

AIR-CON HEATING – THE CHEAPEST FORM OF HEATING? By K&M Air Conditioning (a proud member of the CBBA)
Winter is really arriving here in Spain, and even though it’s not as cold as the UK, after the wonderful Summer it certainly feels chilly. It still amazes us how many people are using bar heaters etc in the Winter and just living with their electricity bill. But did you know that with a new aircon system, you can get the same amount of heat for 6x cheaper, even though it runs on electricity. Here’s the science bit so pay attention. Air conditioning work by pressurising gas. The new R32 gas, when pressurised, boils at -51ºc so it needs relatively little electricity to drive the compressor. Additionally, new systems use ½ the amount of gas of older systems which means even less electricity. The other thing to note is that these systems use approximately 0.7Kw of energy and produce around 4Kw of heat. With bar heaters, you need 4Kw of energy for 4Kw of heat! And if you’re wondering why 4Kw is important, that’s how much you need to heat an average sized living room. So when you consider the cost of electricity for your average sized living room, with traditional bar heaters it’s going to cost you around 0,80€* per hour, with an aircon system just 0,14€* per hour – and that's nearly 6x cheaper! We supply and install aircon systems from all leading suppliers throughout the Northern Costa Blanca. We currently have an offer for a fully fitted GREE A+++ system for 595€ (standard installation). You can add an optional wifi module for only 59€. And the bonus.. you’ve already got your aircon system ready for Summer-cooling! To find out more, either call us on 96 587 4838 or email info@km-aircon.com. Our shop is in Calpe in Calle Pintor Sorolla! We look forward to seeing you! (*calculation depends on actual aircon unit and your electricity tariff). Female Focus December 2018

Getting your house ready for Winter Well Winter certainly seems to be with us now; the wind is howling and the rain falling as I write. My Winter clothes are well and truly “unpacked” and thoughts turning to readying our house for winter. The desire to transform your home tends to intensify during the Winter season; your home needs to become a retreat as the nights draw in and with a little effort you can create a new cosy look and feel in preparation of the months ahead hibernating. Warm tootsies The essential Winter piece for any living area is a plush deep pile rug to protect our feet from the cold tiled floors, especially when getting out of bed in the morning! Subtly textured woven styles in beige, taupe and chocolate are firm favourites and coordinate easily with a number of interiors, bringing life to your room and can creating a new focal point. Snuggling in Topping up or changing cushions and adding a throw is a quick way of warming up your living room. Mixing cushions in a variety of fabrics, patterns and textures, styles and sizes will make your room look lush and cosy and provides an opportunity to add deeper tones of colour. Team them up with a throw for your sofa or reading chair to add some extra comfort for those long dark nights. Keep out the drafts If you have a very open space think about adding heavy lined curtains to cover open archways or staircases, keeping the warmth in specific areas of your villa; it really does work! And to protect yourself from draughty windows or large panes of glass, swap your lightweight Summer voiles for rich thick lined curtains or take advantage of our new range of thermal curtains and linings to help keep the villa warm and reduce heating bills. Sweet Dreams You can create a Winter haven in your bedroom by changing bed linen to warmer colours, swap the whites and neutrals of Summer for warm burgundies, espresso and moss colours. Add new pillows for comfort and then dress your bed by layering with a throw to pull over you in the colder mornings; the only problem about creating a room this cosy will be getting out of bed in the morning! For the bathroom think of changing your towels for new fluffy and oversized bath sheets in a warm tone; strong bold colours can give an entirely new look and feel to the room. The idea of hibernating in Winter is not just for the bears. During the Winter months we will spend more time at home indoors so it’s worth taking a good long look at the space you occupy. With a little time, creativity and winter vision a lot can be achieved. If you would like to discuss the options for Winter curtains, phone Lotus Homestyling on 96 649 3232 for your free no obligation home consultation and let us bring some warmth back into your home this Winter. i

Feeling Cold? Night Storage Heating is the answer By Tony Clark – Electrical Installations Winter is well on its way, and frankly, it’s cold! Thoughts turn to heating your home. Truth is, most Spanish homes are built for the Summer, with many lacking in central heating systems. A lot of people turn to the portable gas heaters thinking they’re cheaper than electricity. So the second truth is that they look ugly, they smell, and they’re not as cheap to run as you might like to think! Save over 60% on Electricity Costs using the Off-Peak Tariff. That is 60% off the full tariff price. We install Gabarron Night Storage Heaters which are a superior way of warming your house. Yes they run on electricity, but they’re relatively cheap to run simply because they charge up overnight with 14 hours off-peak tariff. This is also when it is best to use your washing-machine, dishwasher, swimming pool heaters and pumps and especially electric water heaters, which normally makes up 70% of most people's electricity bill. Storage heaters have come a long way over the years and Gabarron heaters are, in our opinion, the best on the market. Cost-wise, they use around 61% less electricity than regular electrical heaters offering an economical option. In fact they are the most efficient storage heaters on the market in Europe today. They’re a great way to combine comfort and savings and are perfect for home or office. But more than that, they look great and are easy to operate. You simply programme the times you need the heat so if you’re out all day, then set them on low whilst you’re out, boost for just before you get home and then normal when you arrive. You can either use the panel controls or if you opt for the wi-fi option, do it all from your smartphone – easy! Arrive home at midnight after months away to a warm home. Official Installers for Gabarron. Because we’re qualified electricians, we install them professionally and ensure everything is working. When we quote, we’ll check your room size and advise the correct size for your needs and to meet your budget. Talking about budget, as with most things, you get what you pay for. We’ll be honest, they’re not cheap-cheap, but soon pay for themselves with the saving you make. If you’d like to find out more or get a quote, call Tony or Dani on 96 584 0145 / 609 655 672. Home Security can make light work of these dark nights As the dark evenings return, it is a good time to ensure your home security is ready for the Winter. Keep your home secure at all times, particularly over the next few months. Break-ins tend to be more common as the nights grow longer. Over these days, more people are spending time away from home, meeting up with friends and family or attending festive events, especially towards the Christmas period.
There are many options to make the dark nights less of an advantage to burglars, so get in touch today to arrange a survey to discuss your home or business security.
Some easy pointers to help you keep your home safe:
VC Installations is a friendly, independent family run business established in 2002. We pride ourselves on quality installations of:
• Keep your doors locked when you come in, as many burglaries happen without any forced entry, simply due to opportunity. • As Christmas presents begin to stack up, don’t store them in view, for instance under Christmas trees or by windows. • Don’t forget to lock up sheds and garages. In the colder weather sheds tend to get visited less often and sometimes forgotten about. Many people store valuable tools and equipment in sheds. • CCTV is becoming more prominent across homes and businesses, and the latest technologies make light work of these dark nights. By installing High Definition, night vision cameras you can see your premises clearly without any external light source. These days such equipment no longer costs an arm and a leg. • Alarms give added protection to homes and businesses. Alarms give you the peace of mind that your home is secure while you are away, and can even act as a deterrent to possible burglars. With many systems you can monitor your house through your mobile phone whilst you are away, giving you even more peace of mind.
· CCTV Systems · Intruder Alarm Systems · Access Control · Home Automation · TV Installations / Wall Mounting · Home Entertainment / Cinema · Audio Visual Solutions & Networks · TV & Satellite Services From a simple door intercom or small CCTV system to completely integrated alarm, and full on home automation, VC Installations will bring your ideas into reality. We have five new groups starting, two of which you may be in if you are looking to improve your physique: Belly Dancing and simple beginners yoga, or if it’s your mind you want to keep active there is always the history of The First World War, run by Ann Dyson, an ex-history teacher. For these groups or more information please contact John Falkner (Group Coordinator) through the Oliva U3A webpage at https://u3aoliva.wildapricot.org/ where non-members can also find information about how to join our very active and wide range of groups. We have some groups looking for more members, these are Line Dancing and Lawn Bowls, both of which meet on Mondays, and the choir are always on the lookout for new people, whether you can sing or not, so I am told. The music director works magic on everyone. So if you are feeling brave, they meet on Fridays at Viva España. All information about the Oliva U3A groups can be found on the website. The U3A (University of a Third Age) is for retired or non-working people over the age of 55 years and of any nationality. At €10 for annual membership it’s a great way to meet new people in and around Oliva, and to extend your social life as well as to try out new activities or hobbies. We also have regular trips and events. Last month saw a coach of members visiting, the old town of Villena and then on to The Bodega Francisco Gomez for wine tour and tasting. For all trips and events don’t forget to check the website on a regular basis to keep updated. With the festive season rapidly heading this way, there will be plenty of opportunity to join in with a sing song, a dance and a meal or two, not forgetting a quiz to keep your brain cells ticking. So why not sign up now and join in the fun. All you need is an email address https://u3aoliva.wildapricot.org/Membership-Application. Until next month, with best wishes, Angela Town. Oliva U3A Press and Publicity Officer.

MALCOLM'S MUSINGS Budding Van Goghs In Alicante I am no art afficionado but when I discovered that there was a special exhibition of Vincent van Gogh’s works to be held in Alicante I decided to take a look at what was described as the most visited itinerant multimedia exhibition in the world. On arriving at the Alicante Lonja del Pescado ‘alive’ showing, my first plan of swiftly viewing a series of Van Gogh’s paintings was swept aside by a group very young children bearing clutches of coloured crayons and avidly attempting to emulate the artist’s style. Without so much as a murmur these kids sat drawing at a table just beyond the exhibition’s entry. I was astounded; some of the handwork was superb yet all the ‘would-be’ artists were barely school age. I was desperately jealous. I located the curator and begged that I might join them. She glanced at my wizened visage and wrinkled hands and surprisingly acceded to my request. Shakily and hurriedly I grabbed a fistful of coloured pencils and scored my paper. My drawing was not what it had been seventy years ago but I was happy and felt ‘alive’. I was in the ghostly presence of a master and sketching furiously. Perhaps my images were unrecognisable. I cared not. The lady curate was a delight. She queried my age, gasped at my wriggling fingers’ gyrations, and flattered me in Spanish. I reckon she was somewhat prone to exaggeration but why not! As for the actual event, in terms of modern art it could only be described as awe inspiring and infinitely memorable! Open Tuesday to Sundays until 16 December you are just in time to catch 'Van Gogh Alive – the experience' in the Sala de Exposiones, LONJA DEL PESCADO, ALICANTE. An unforgettable multi-sensory experience for all from young children to the eighty plus. Easy access to the Port by a walk from the Mercado tram stop.
Lions Club of Calpe & Benissa The Calpe & Benissa Lions have a charity shop in Calle Pintor Sorolla 15, Calpe, and over the last several years they have raised money to help and support local people in need. A very successful Fashion Show luncheon was held at El Toro in Calpe in November, where many nearly new and top quality donated items were modelled by Lions members, volunteers, and friends. This was the second year for this popular event, with tickets selling out almost immediately. Lions President Carole Saunders said ´It is a lot of hard work to organise such an event, and I really appreciate the effort put in by everyone concerned. Thanks also to all of our guests, I think everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly. We are helping a lot of good causes, and this event alone raised €1025´. Find out more about Lions activities on our Facebook page ´Lions Club of Calpe & Benissa´.

U3A Vall del Pop: Cocentaina Trip On 2 November 50 members of VdP U3A set off to the All Saints Fair (Feria de todos los Santos) in Cocentaina; a fair that has been running every year since 1346. Essentially an agricultural fair, with an area filled with tractors, lorries and farming equipment but in the town squares, and in the myriad of narrow streets, there were hundreds of stallholders and entertainers providing a medieval market, an Arab souk, and traditional music and dancing shows. In the courtyard of the Earl’s Palace a range of medieval games were on show, all in working order, and you could give them a try! Another square was the traditional foods and eating area. In the Arab areas there were stalls selling baklavas, and other stalls selling a wide range of fresh spices and teas together with the abundance of stalls selling leather goods, jewellery and gifts. This was a wonderful and very interesting festival, so if you have an interest in culture and history, don't miss this trip next year! For further information on U3A Vall del Pop check our website [http://u3avalldelpop.com]. The U3A is all about enjoyment and learning, and this is particularly evident in the U3A Vall del Pop, whose members hold their General Assembly generally, fiestas and holidays permitting, on the first Thursday of each month at the Centre Polivalent in Murla, and have a diverse range of groups for the interest of the members.
Valleys Bridge and Social Club Members of the Valleys Bridge and Social Club held a competition at El Cid, for their B&B Cup. This was followed by a carvery dinner. Members agreed this was a most enjoyable event. For further details on the club, please phone either Brenda 96 640 4533 or Tina 96 558 3136.

The Teulada – Moraira Lions Present “What a Cracker VI” 9 December
The Teulada – Moraira Lions are once again proud to present their annual Christmas show “What a Cracker” this is the sixth year that the festive fun will be staged by the TM Lions and what a show it promises to be. We are pleased to present once again the delightful English Choir, who will be performing for us and inviting the audience to join in singing your favourite carols, and we have the Laude Lady Elizabeth school choir joining us with their renditions of “rockin” Christmas songs accompanied by the very talented Adam Daniels. In addition we are planning to have a dance troupe of youngsters from the Laude Lady Elizabeth school showing off their talents which will be a delight. Adam will also be performing a solo spot which will no doubt be excellent. There will be the Salvation Army band playing a few festive tunes and also the Timbrels with their unique dance routines. The concert starts at 6pm and the doors open at 5pm. Overall, quite a show! This year we are staging the show in Espai La Senieta and entrance is a very modest 5€ donation. We will have mince pies, shortbread, mulled wine and soft drinks available in the foyer from our donations bar. There will also be a small gift for the younger children. Ride in Style the ideal 'bucket list' Christmas gift On Sunday 4 November, Melissa Knight fulfilled her dream of taking a pillion ride on a Harley Davidson motorbike. She went on the ride with the Free Spirits HD Harley Davidson enthusiasts club, who helped her tick the experience off her bucket list. The event was organised by Melissa’s husband Ray to coincide with her birthday month. Eighteen Harleys, with Melissa riding pillion on club member Dennis Hankey’s bike, went from Alcalalí to Tárbena, where they had a coffee stop. A birthday cake had been arranged and the 26 members of the group sang ‘Happy Birthday’. Melissa said it was the best birthday she had ever had. The ride was part of Free Spirits HD’s Ride in Style initiative, in which any member of the public can have a ride on a Harley Davidson in return for a donation to the club’s nominated charities, which this year are Help of DAMA and Scan of El Verger. Give the gift of a 'Ride in Style' this Christmas. Not only will they have a fantastic experience but you will also be helping two amazing charities. Free Spirits HD is an English-speaking group of more than 50 riders based in the Marina Alta who enjoy rides throughout the year, including coffee and lunch stops, planned by the road captain running the ride. Free Spirits HD are always happy to welcome new members. Please contact Barry Haylor at freespiritshd@gmail.com or via the website www.freespiritshd.club or telephone 629 728 375.
Jaguars visit toy town by Sandra Brook After meeting in Albir the Northern group drove to San Juan to join up with the Southern members before taking the mountain roads to Ibi (known for toy making). While negotiating the winding bends the big cats began to resemble a multi-coloured snake taking the bends with ease. On a straighter section of the road with fabulous views the full length of the convoy could be seen, which attracted waves from local workmen, and photos taken by cyclists who watched as the cats
cruised by in a complete uninterrupted line of Jaguar splendour. The destination was Caseta Nova in the countryside of Ibi and after a super lunch 16 members stayed over for the night to enjoy a night out in the town, followed the next morning by a tour of the toy museum of Ibi. 12 YEARS IN OUR AVENIDA DE MADRID OFFICE AND A CONTINUOUS 12 YEARS OF RECORD RESULTS!
Highlights of 2018: • RECORD UNIT SALES. • RECORD TOTAL SALES TURNOVER. • RECORD NOTARY COMPLETIONS FOR 2018. • RECORD HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL SALE TO DATE. • EIGHT LANGUAGES SPOKEN. We are both very pleased and proud to announce our twelfth year of unbroken profits and results, since our commencement in 2006. Having begun as Costa Blanca Select, Chris and Linda Garwood opened their current office in the centre of Moraira, trading as SELECT Villas of Moraira, in 2009. During the intervening period we have evolved and refined our team of staff to our current level of nine persons:-
Dawn Williamson – Office Manager, Advertising and Property Listings. Karen Lynch – After Sales and Accounts Manager. Julia Joyce – Sales Manager. Sarah Larkin and Martin Shaw – Sales Executives. Margaret Farrow and Maureen Pruvoost - Reception & Sales Support. Plans for 2019 include: internal and external refurbishment of the office. Full office furniture refit. A number of fresh, new marketing and promotional initiatives in UK and Europe. We have already seen the first few, of what we believe will be a growing number of closures, of the more opportunistic and inexperienced of our number. The current number of estate agencies which have sprung up everywhere seems to have doubled over the last three years, and is totally unsustainable. The sooner we have a good market shake-out, the better and stronger the market shall become. Meanwhile, we would like to introduce our most recent member of staff: Maureen Pruvoost from Tielt, Belgium. Having gained many years of retail and design experience, Maureen has now joined our sales support team and brings with her the advantage of speaking Dutch, English, French, Spanish and German. We take this opportunity to wish all our friends, collaborators and clients a happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year. Chris and Linda Garwood. To contact Select Villas of Moraira tel 96 649 0861, email info@select-villas.es or visit their website www.select-villas.es.
