Optical chain joins the campaign to collect food for those in need This December, Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe are running a campaign to collect non-perishable food for those in need.

All Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Mallorca have pledged to support the Operación Kilo Campaign, which is organised by Spain’s Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL) and operates nationwide through a network of 55 food banks.

FESBAL distributes food via charities and associations to help the most vulnerable people in society and is currently supplying food to 1.5 million people. Specsavers Ópticas will be collecting food for them until the end of the year.

Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe are collaborating with the food bank for the Alicante province (Banco de Alimentos Alicante) to ensure the food donations get to those people who really need them. They are particularly in need of the following non-perishable foods and toiletries – oil, tinned foods, baby food, nappies, formula milk, toothpaste, deodorant, bath gel, shampoo and soap.

These products can be dropped into Specsavers Ópticas in Calpe on Avenida Ejércitos Españoles No. 6, or in Jávea on Avenida Del Pla 125 in Jávea. They can also be dropped in to any other Specsavers Ópticas store on the Costa Blanca, visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

Louise and Mike Stone, the Directors of Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe are asking for donations of food in return for their free eye test and encouraging anyone who recently had a free eye test to also join the collection and bring in some food to donate throughout December.

What a dreadful time parts of the UK are experiencing with flood waters. How irritating it must be for Boris and all those politicians electioneering, as I am sure there are many more interested in trying to recover from the weather.

Of those people who have been flooded, who of course are very distressed, there are many who will have no insurance cover at present and those with insurance who will never get cover for flooding again.

Spain has just come through very bad weather in our area, with over 60,000 claims so far with an estimated total cost of over â‚Ź400 million. I often mention how impressed I am with the Spanish regarding disasters as the system is so simple, where a percentage of your premium is paid to the government Consortio. This means you will always have guaranteed cover. Obviously you will only get the amount that you are insured for and you will not get it on your car if it is English plated, and they will not be able to contact you if you do not have a Spanish telephone number.

However, as long you solve these issues, this means you never have to worry about not having flooding covered in the future, as this cover is guaranteed by the Consortio as part of your policy.

Just make sure you have the correct house insurance and do not just base it on price, as you never know what is round the corner.

I had no intention of mentioning Brexit. However, there are already a few changes in my world.

One of them is the necessity of being in possession of a Green Card for Spanish vehicles travelling to the UK, and UK plated vehicles will need this card for travelling in Europe. All my offices can provide your Green Card and remember they are only valid for one year.

www.femalefocusonline.com Well this month is packed with ideas for Christmas. It's a good job as I am totally unorganised this year but am sure it will all come together.

We are having Christmas early as Christmas Day is one of the busiest for darling daughter in her business and she (well actually son-in-law to be) always gets called away just as the dinner is served.

So what to do on Christmas Day? Well, weather permitting, we are going to join the hundreds of others on La Zenia beach. We have some good friends who live close by so are meeting them, taking our picnics and santa hats (and of course buckets and spades as the grandchildren are coming along) to join in the fun on the beach.

A big welcome to Fran who has joined the Female Focus team and will be covering the Marina Baixa area from Altea to Finestrat. Will you have control and certainty?

By James Johnson, Associate Partner, Blevins Franks We all sleep better when we feel confident that our affairs are in order, and as we get older we think more about the legacy we will leave to future generations; specifically, how and to whom our assets will pass on our death.

You have worked hard to build up your wealth and want to pass it on to your children and grandchildren to help them as they make their way through life. But can you have control over what happens after you are gone? For example, you want to leave money to your children but may be concerned about how they will handle it at this stage in their life or whether their marriage will last. Or perhaps you want your grandchildren to receive a good education and would like to contribute to their university fees, with some funds timed to help them get on the property ladder.

British expatriates in Spain could potentially have both UK inheritance tax (which is based on domicile, not residence) and Spanish succession tax to contend with. The two regimes work very differently. Your estate planning solutions should therefore be tax favoured ones.

In our experience it is possible to structure your affairs, for both Spain and the UK, so that the right money passes to the right hands at the right time, at the same time as reducing tax during your lifetime and after it.

It is important, however, to use robust arrangements which are compliant in Spain and UK. Creating and maintaining a good ‘estate plan’ is primarily about ensuring your wishes are carried out in the way you wish, while taking account of relevant legal and tax considerations. It needs to be flexible to accommodate events like grandchildren, divorce or re-marriage within the family. It then needs reviewing on a regular basis.

Estate planning is a very specialist area and professional advice from an experienced wealth manager is essential.

Two Amata Christmas Fairs with real Crafts If you want to buy a few really nice and original presents for people who matter, why not visit one of the two Craft Fairs that Amata will be holding in Altea (from 5 to 8 December) and Jávea (6, 7 and 8 December). Real craft fairs run by real craft people who sell only what they make themselves.

Altea Altea is known as a very artistic town with lots of resident artists and a really lovely old town, but the fair will be held in the modern part of town, in front of the Town Hall (parallel to the main road N332 but 100 yards inland). Some 30 craft people will gather there with all sorts of original work. Pottery, glasswork, leather, wooden toys, design jewellery and all the other special items visitors to an Amata fair have come to expect.

For the kids there will be workshops, soap bubbles, table games, a merry-go-round as well as donkey rides. On Saturday noon time the choir of U3A Calpe will come and sing Christmas carols and every day a lady juggler brings extra life to the fair, walking around on stilts, telling stories to the children, and, last thing in the evening, dancing and juggling with fire. The fair starts on Thursday 5 December at 6pm and lasts until Sunday evening. Opening times from 11am until 9pm (the fair doesn't close at midday); Sunday they will close a bit earlier.

Jávea Port The other fair that Amata organises on the same long weekend will be in the Port of Jávea. In a beautiful setting on the seaside promenade, some twenty stalls will be set up around an enormous Christmas tree.

Every stall is offering something different and as all participants are real craft people, they bring their tools along so they can make small changes or personalise a chosen item, and can even accept special orders if you don't find what you are looking for. Some artisans will be at work in their stalls, so you can see with how much love and patience every item is made. Here Sergio will play well known (Christmas) melodies on his violin and potter José will bring his wheel, and offers you the chance to make your own little bowl or vase. This fair opens on the Friday morning, 6 December, and the opening times for the three days are from 11am until 8pm, although on Sunday they close at 6pm.

Every Saturday and Sunday morning If you can't visit these two markets in the "puente de diciembre" (long weekend that includes the 6 and 8 December, both bank holidays in Spain), you can visit the Port of Jávea on any other weekend and have a look at the stalls that are set up every Saturday and Sunday morning from 11am until 2 or 3pm. You can find the fair on Google maps if you look for Feria de Artesanía Jávea and they even have their own page in Facebook: feriaartesaniajavea, where they publish any news and changes in the opening times.

Do you have your RESIDENCIA? Time is running out!

Sun Lawyers are the people to go to if you are looking to become a Spanish resident, especially with Brexit looming.

You should apply for a Spanish residency card if: • You’ve spent more than 90 days in Spain.

• You want to be legal in Spain.

Let's examine those three points in more detail.

You're staying in Spain for over 90 days The law clearly states that if you spend more than 90 days in a 180 day period in Spain (or any other country in the Schengen area), then you must apply for a residency card, which in effect is a stay permit.

If you are from the UK, the Brexit issue is clouding the waters, but essentially you have to get yourself covered with a residencia, pure and simple, and we at Sun Lawyers can get that sorted for you and your partner and family.

The proposed UK-EU withdrawal agreement allows residencias to continue, but they will then be swapped over to a different card, which the Spanish government said earlier this year would be a straight-forward process.

That looks like being the case as well in a no-deal Brexit scenario according to Madrid, but you must get a residencia right now, and time is ticking by quickly.

As an example, an EU person that is residing in Spain, once you have obtained your Spanish residency card, you then you have a period to switch your EU licence for a Spanish driving licence.

You want to use the Spanish healthcare system Essentially there are two main categories here: 1. Limited and temporary healthcare in Spain.

At present, this must be done through the EHIC health card, but this does not include ongoing treatments and, currently, no bilateral agreement has been signed to continue with this for UK citizens once the UK leaves the EU. 2. Permanent all-inclusive healthcare in Spain.

Right now, state pensioners from other EU member states can transfer their rights to health care from their country of origin with the S1, E121 & E106. In the future, we will see if it is still the case for UK citizens, depending on negotiations between UK and Spain.

You either love Christmas or hate it, either way it seems it’s the Victorians fault.

Sometimes we think about life more than 100 years ago and imagine simpler times. But when it came to Christmas, the Victorians really did it right. Decorating, feasting and sharing songs, music and gifts with others were all the order of the day.

The reign of Queen Victoria 1837 - 1901 brought us Santa Claus, Christmas cards and even time off work!

The Victorians brought us the Industrial Revolution and mass production and the new wealth generated, changed Christmas forever. Mass produced children’s books, dolls and wooden toys became much cheaper, though a ‘poor’ child’s Christmas stocking would only have an apple, an orange and a few nuts!

This revolution also stimulated the manufacture of huge amounts of high class furniture. However, the Victorian version of furniture mass production was to specialise the craftsmen. Sawyers just sawed, joiners made chairs, cabinet makers made cabinets, bodgers made chair legs and spindles, coopers made barrels etc. Because of this specialisation the craftsmen became very skilled and very fast. The Victorian trade links across the world were second to none which made the very best timber available to these craftsmen. That’s why most furniture you will find in antique shops today came from the Victorian era.

The new Middle Class became able to have two days off work, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Boxing day was originally the day the poor received gifts or the Christmas leftovers and the day the church distributed the donations left in the charity box.

At the start of Victoria’s reign turkeys and chickens were still too expensive for most people. Instead many decorated their large meat platters with beef or goose and the poor ate rabbit. By the end of the 1800s, turkey was much more affordable and had firmly taken its place as the traditional food of Christmas. The turkeys were bred in Norfolk and come October they were marched the 80 mile hike to London wearing little leather shoes! Here they enjoyed being feasted and fattened the last few weeks before Christmas.

Even the tradition of the Christmas tree was started in England

by Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert when in the 1840s he brought one to Windsor Castle, and the Victorians even brought us most of the well known Christmas carols which they would sing around the piano in the parlour.

So as I decorate the shop ready for Christmas I look around at the antiques and wonder what stories they could tell. They have already seen over a hundred Christmases and will still be around for several more generations. So if you're looking for an unusual gift why not something from a Victorian Christmas?

Montgó Choral Christmas concert Montgó Chorale will be presenting their now traditional Christmas concert at the Loreto Church (also known as the Fishermen’s Church) in Jávea Port on Sunday 8 December.

Under the baton of Director Jan Dewland, the choir will be singing many traditional and well-loved carols, some with audience participation, as well as other pieces such as Vivaldi´s Gloria and the beautiful Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré. No doubt there will be some quiet unscheduled audience participation during the choir's rendition of Karl Jenkins´Adiemus!

Please go along and join the celebration. No booking required so be sure to arrive in good time as the church fills fast. There will be a retiring collection in aid of Caritas, the church’s charity that does such important and worthwhile work supporting local families in need. The concert starts at 17.00h.

The Montgó Chorale is sad to announce that this concert heralds the departure of Jan Dewland after many years as a leading soprano and for the last two as Director. However the choir will continue with a new Director, Aileen Lightfoot. Look out for the announcements of future performances, including the May 2020 concert!

MAPA donation for the Autism Centre in Jávea On 21 November some of the committee of Marina Alta Pensionistas Asociación (MAPA) visited the centre for autism in Jávea.

Monies had been raised by the members having a monthly lunch club and each attendee at these lunches donated 1€ on top of the meal price for the charity. Also a BBQ was held at Font Santa Teulada in May and a fundraising day in September. 500€ was raised for the centre.

The president Maureen Burrows presented the money on behalf of the members.

Get into the Christmas spirit The Charity shop of Calpe has donated over €300,000 to local charities since it was established in 2002. You can help increase this sum by coming along to our Christmas Event on Saturday 7 December from 10am until 1pm.

You'll enjoy a welcome glass of Bucks Fizz and there will be stalls selling homemade cakes, savouries, crafts and Christmas gifts.

You can win a tombola prize or enter our Grand raffle to win a 32" television, one of our Christmas hampers or many other prizes.

Plus, the shop will be open for you to pick up a party outfit or some jewellery for the festive season. You'll find the shop in Galerías Mar Azul – half-way up Avda. Gabriel Miró on the right hand side.

It's that time of year again, Make A Smile's popular Christmas Bag Appeal has now been launched and runs up to the 5th of January.

The appeal for children in local care homes has been running for the last 11 years and is a very important part of the year's events as it provides gifts and needed items for the children. The children all get new pjs, slippers, underwear, and of course Christmas and Three Kings presents. The homes get topped up with school supplies, batteries etc. which then last them for quite a few months through to the spring. Gift vouchers are a great way to make sure that the carers have the facility to buy birthday presents, clothes for new children and shoes etc. when needed.

The best ones for them are Carrefour vouchers as most items are available there, but also Primark, Sprinter and H&M. Please have a look at the poster alongside and share a bit of Christmas spirit with the children in the homes again this year: Choose your nearest drop-off point to take a few things to and you will raise plenty of smiles from us and everyone in the group.

Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain to focus on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad.

Santa Claus is (maybe) coming to town FATHER Christmas touched down early on the Costa Blanca and helped by Elf Sofia was ready and waiting in his grotto for a photo opportunity and to decipher the increasingly complex wish lists of 2019.

It was, after all, an early bird Christmas Fair in Jávea and a charity bash to boot. But, hey, Donner and Blitzen, the very same evening there were snaps to be taken of one Guy Fawkes (a November 3rd Fireworks Night party and also a charity biggie) - it can be a confusing world out there on the seasonal front.

But mums and dads; be afraid. Be very afraid. There is a shortage of Santas...this cold front is moving across Europe where the man in red (he once wore green until Coca Cola rebranded St Nick) remains ever popular.

Back in the UK, the people’s favourite ‘red top’ tabloid The Sun even came up with the catchy headline: “Ho, Ho, No!” Apparently, it is a very real seasonal crisis.

Demand is soaring for an appearance by Father Christmas; there is a boom in grottos but not enough Santas to fill them - despite adverts and appeals from shops, malls, theme parks and even Winter Wonderlands (unsure of what they are but you would think by the billing they might have planned ahead?).

Apparently there is a return to a traditional meeting with Father Christmas as people try to brighten up the gloom of winter; especially with Britain facing a General Election, ongoing Brexit debate and some rather devastating inclement weather.

And the UK’s only Father Christmas training school has received more than 1,000 appeals for help to fill the gaps. The phone is ringing off the hook at the Ministry of Fun Santa School (yes, there really is such a place).

Founder James Lovell said: “We have had more requests than ever; many are places that once had a grotto and are returning to having them again.

Things are so depressing at the moment. Who wants a General Election at Christmas? We want to sing carols and go shopping.

Let’s all be jolly!”

The right profile for a successful Santa Claus is to be over 35, to have a deep voice, not to be too thin - a hint of polite political correctness there - and to be able to cope with kids and their demanding over-excited parents. Back at the Ministry of Fun Santa School, some of the apprentices are aged 80; but they tend to work short shifts.

James admitted: “We are recruiting like crazy to find enough performers to help recreate the magic of the real Santa”.

The power of Three Kings wanes BRITS touching down in sunny Spain over the years have always noted how the festive season was a little more understated, sophisticated, and the fun stretched to January 6, the 12th day of Christmas, and the Three Kings celebration.

In short, unlike the UK, people were not smacked in the face with a commercial Christmas message from sometime around the end of September.

Every year British television adverts continue the war of attrition.

First of all there are toys galore; must haves for the little darlings - new fangled modern thingies, repackaged oldies and revamped traditional bits and bobs. Order new furniture and there is always an added promise: Guaranteed to be delivered by Christmas. Why? Better to keep the old sofa until at least after the New Year’s Eve celebrations cutting the risk of the new cream-coloured couch and carpet free of wine stains (or worse).

And every time a supermarket puts together an advert for food; has anyone noticed the sheer amount of grub shown on the table?

These days it would be really easy to feed the 5,000 (or the England rugby squad who need cheering up after a certain final) and keep them in booze too.

Now things are changing in Spain too. Friends tell me it is the power of advertising and the spell it casts over the populace in a ‘gimmie’ world.

It is the change in retail outlets that is the real change. Visited the Nevada shopping centre in Granada on November 4 - there was a huge Christmas tree and the mall’s decorations were in place and yet no one seemed to notice but give it a couple of years and the panic buying will get earlier and earlier...and that’s a guaranteed delivery.

Wherever you are and whatever is planned this December 25, Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!

Personally, I love the big day; and although with the passing of the years, hostilities begin a little later on Christmas Day it is still full of magic. Out walking the dog late one Christmas Eve on the Costa - and having enjoyed some seasonal cheer - the stars were out, the sky was clear and the church bells started ringing. Simply magical; a living Christmas card.

A Self Help Guide to help you survive Christmas...

If you watch any festive film, you will invariably see the most idyllic family set up. Every family will have a fridge full of delicious treats, a massive tree sheltering a million neatly wrapped gifts and matching Crimbo jumpers.

But for some people Christmas can be a very hard time of year. Why is your family so different from the above? You, or one of your close family is drunk for the majority of the Christmas period and everyone has an almost daily row with each other. But why? You love them, they love you, and each other. Christmas is supposed to be the season of goodwill, after all. So why after the initial euphoria burns off, do you each end up threatening to burn any present you’ve bought each other?

According to a Relate survey 68% of people who responded to the survey expected to row over the Christmas holidays, with 39% citing Christmas Day as the mostly likely time to have a bust-up. And studies suggest that a lot of festive tension comes from worries about money. Financial disagreements lead to divorce more often than other common problem areas like disagreements over household tasks or spending time together.

In fact, 61% of consumers say that holiday spending causes them relationship difficulties. The main issue is frequently to do with how much is spent on gifts – often with one person choosing to spend way more than the other. And of course while the idea is that everyone will have a wonderful Christmas time - all that bonding can create the perfect storm for family feuds.

So here are some ways to try to avoid family rifts over the festive season, or at least cope with them should they happen…

1. Think ahead and be realistic If you know that there's likely to be conflict within your family, spending extended time together over Christmas is probably not a great idea. So don't! Book a holiday or make an excuse to be elsewhere.

2. Do your best to compromise A large amount of acceptance on Christmas Day is important, and if you're not happy, communication is key. For example, you may have some people who drink more heavily than others or maybe not at all. So, compromise and decide to start drinking at Christmas dinner, rather than any earlier in the day. If there are arguments at Christmas, limit things like alcohol because that obviously creates extra irritability.

3. Mix things up a bit Rather than forcing yourself to spend extended time with the members of your family who you find most difficult, see if you can break your time up to alleviate the pressure that you all have to be together all of the time. Find some clever ways of creating opportunities to take some time out. Things like being the one who walks the dog, or who finds a late-night garage to buy some milk.

Sometimes it is important just to get a break from the pressure from each other.

4. Avoid heavy conversations This is not the time of year to tackle your mother about her drinking problem or resolve the feud that you've always had with your brother. Stick to lighter conversations. Right at this moment Brexit is probably another controversial topic to stay away from, unless your family really enjoys debating!

5. Try to share any anxieties you have got ahead of time Trust a person in your family who you can communicate your worries to, or who may even share the same concerns. Discuss with them how you are going to manage those few days. And even if they don't share your concerns, it may be that they are better at dealing with that person than you are.

6. Look after yourself first If there is no way to resolve a dispute and it is only going to get worse, take yourself out of the situation as soon as you can. If the situation can't be controlled and is becoming a real problem, you may have to make the decision to say this isn't okay, and either go home or go away from what's going on.

7. Seek professional help Unlike involving another member of the family, a professional doctor or therapist won't judge you or take sides, and will be able to help you to find strategies to move forward. Every year, in January, counsellors receive on average a 25% increase in calls following the fallout of family tensions which have come

Every month I focus on WALKING. How it is vitally important for our health and the well-being of our bodies and minds. A couple of weeks ago myself and the kids participated in a truly special event: The Cancer Care Javea “Moonlight Walk”. 165 enthusiastic people of all nationalities stomped a 5km route lit by a breath-taking crystal clear full-moon. The Mediterranean sea shimmered blindingly and spirits were high as the event raised a whopping €1900 for local cancer care. I’m going to tell you more about this fantastic group and offer information about their weekly walks. But right now, I’d like to take a brief detour and discuss something that fits beautifully hand in hand with a healthy exercise regime. A healthy diet!

What we consume has a direct impact on our health. It’s mind blazingly obvious. Yet, it's laboriously challenging to eat well ALL of the time. We are ceaselessly bombarded with advertising ploys, attractive packaging and the promise of joyous taste buds when we chose THIS easy option or THAT tasty treat. But, with so many alternatives (you can’t have missed the hype around the new Burger King vegan burger?) and so much informative media (don’t let “The Game Changers” documentary slip under your radar) we actually live in fortunate times. There is the argument that these big corporations are simply milking the proverbial health food cow. However, if they make us a touch healthier or a smidgeon more aware in the process then maybe it’s not the worst kind of marketing manipulation.

If you want to examine your diet and make either subtle or drastic changes in the hope of optimising your health there is a wealth of opportunity just waiting for you. For 15 years (since my first pregnancy) I’ve been more keenly aware of my diet, and that of my family. The thing that invariably waves its red flag in my face is the connection between an unhealthy diet and cancer. I

mean NONE of us want cancer right? Yet, many of us make food choices that may lead to developing it. Without trying to sound condescending; it really does make the mind boggle!

To cut a long story short, the gist of my ramblings today are to reinforce that age old pithy expression of truth that PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. So, aside from my perpetual nagging to please walk your way well, I’m just reminding us all that we DO have some choice in what might lay ahead in our health journey.

Over these past fifteen years I have sneakily removed certain food items from our cupboards and covertly introduced healthier alternatives. The main reason for this is that my husband (who is a true criminal when it comes to food choices if left to his own devices) suffers from arterial hypertension, cardiomyopathy AND familial hypertriglyceridemia. He simply MUST watch what he eats. With a new year to look forward to here’s just a FEW pantry tricks you can play in 2020. And if you are as underhanded and subtle as I’ve been you might find your family won’t even notice the change!

1. Swap pork for sustainable fish 2. Swap beef for free range chicken 3. Swap butter for organic olive oil 4. Swap white bread for freshly baked wholegrain bread 5. Swap tinned for fresh /frozen vegetables 6. Swap table salt for organic Himalayan rock salt 7. Swap processed sugar for high quality Stevia 8. Swap white rice for bio-brown rice 9. Swap milk chocolate for sugar free dark chocolate 10. Swap full fat dairy milk for organic soy /rice /oat milk Now, let’s reel me back onto my favourite topic: WALKING!

I discovered that Jo and Janette of Cancer Care Javea run a walking and support group for people who are suffering from cancer, recovering after cancer treatment or for families and friends who are affected by cancer. They invite you to join the group every Wednesday at 6pm meeting in the Hotel Parador Jávea reception/ cafe area. One of the things that struck me powerfully was when Janette explained to me briefly how simultaneous walking /talking makes us more open to honest conversation. So, I researched a little more on this and it’s simply fascinating. The step by step motion gets both our endorphins and adrenaline

pumping. This encourages a sense of emotional liberty as we walk. Which in turn leads us to relax, feel comfortable and more confident to talk openly about our feelings. The lack of eye-contact as we stride forward lends itself to a more fluid and frank conversation.

“Walk & Talk Therapy” is not a new concept but it’s not something people are fully familiar with. So, aside from all the enormous physical benefits that exercise brings to people living with and beyond cancer (battling fatigue, easing chemotherapy side affects, improving cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness) we can also embrace the fact that joining this walking group can benefit our psychological well-being. Just this past month (November) one of our neighbours was taken seriously ill, but the ambulance could not find her home. Precious time was wasted whilst a friend of hers had to leave her side, and go out searching for the ambulance.

Charity Calendar in aid of Gandia Children's Home The Costa Blanca Business Association is proud to support this year's Charity Calendar in aid of The Gandia Children's Home - The Preventorio. Calenders are on sale for just 5€ and can be purchased at the following locations:- The Fiddler Moraira, Humpty Dumpty Jávea, Montgo Verde Jávea, The Beauty Place Jávea, Property Team Jalon, various Christmas fairs and on 16 December in Iceland.

The Preventorio Infantil Nuestra Señora del Amparo is located in the Real de Gandia, Spain. The home was established in 1948 by the congregation of Little Sisters of Saint Joseph of Montgay.

The nuns managed this place until their old age all the way up to 2013.

Over the years they have helped to care for over 6000 children. In 2013 the management of the centre was taken over by the Nuestra Señora del Amparo Autonomous Foundation. The day to day running of the school and the home fell in the hands of the school director Sra MariaJose Castello Morant, local community, Social Educators, Teachers and It's All About the Children charity volunteers. The establishment has two buildings: the school and the residence.

The Nuestra Señora del Amparo public school, for Infant and Primary, has been a Singular Educational Education Center (CAES) from 2009. The school has nine teachers of Infant, Primary, English, PE and Art/Music as well as a social worker and a psychologist.

The children’s home section has been home to disadvantaged kids since 1948 and currently is heavily understaffed and underfunded. At the moment they care for 54 kids who are cared for by one full-time House Mother, Monica and a part-time helper who comes at night. The kitchen staff stay past their regular working hours for free to help prepare evening snacks and dinner.

This is why they so heavily rely on the volunteers to help around the home.

Due to legal structure and lack of funding the children can only stay at the home Monday - Friday. Children who can’t go back due to violence at home go to stay at an orphanage in Valencia with their little food bag. We do everything we can to organise summer camps and other holiday activities, so the children don’t have to go back home. For more information please visit www.itsallaboutthechildren.es.

Merry Christmas

Adagio will be bringing their brand of music and humour to the festive season with "An Adagio Christmas" this December. They are performing their show at two venues in Calpe and Xalo.

The Calpe show is at Camping La Merced on Saturday 14 December at 4pm. Tickets for this are priced at 12â‚Ź.

The Xalo show is at The Black Apple Bistro on Thursday 19 December at 7.30pm and is priced at 15â‚Ź and includes light refreshments at the interval.

With many carol concerts on offer around the Costa Blanca, Adagio have decided to do a different type of Christmas show.

Everything in the show is either a Christmas song, or has some connection to Christmas, but they stress that it is not a carol concert. Instead they will entertain you with famous hits from years past, songs about Christmas traditions such as texting loved ones and what to do with the presents afterwards, and some songs from seasonal films.

This is the perfect concert to add to your yuletide festivities and Adagio hope to leave you smiling and humming your favourite tunes.

Mulled Wine - The Perfect Winter Beverage!

There’s nothing better than a warm Christmassy hug in the shape of hot, sweetened red wine infused with exotic spices.

• In a large saucepan add the sugar and the slices of oranges, pieces of peel, and the orange juice.

• Add the cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaves, star anise and about 10 gratings of nutmeg to the pan.

• Pour enough wine to cover the sugar, stir and simmer over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.

Christmas carols in Jávea Port Jávea International Baptist Church (JIBC) are once again holding their annual carol singing in Jávea port and are extending a warm welcome to everyone.

The carol singing will commence at 12 noon on Friday, 20 December, in the main square to the rear of the Hotel Miramar, and the public will have a ringside seat from the local bars and cafes.

There will be collection boxes available for anyone wishing to make a donation and any proceeds collected this year will go, in their entirety, to the ACACIA charity and the work of missionaries Graham and Sarah in the village of Mazwi in Zimbabwe, for the construction of a multi-purpose building for the local children.

JIBC is an English speaking church and, this Christmas, they are also holding a Carols by Candlelight service on Sunday 22 December at 6.30pm, and their Christmas Day service is at 10.30am on 25 December. Oliva U3A Festive Fun

The English Choir of Teulada Moraira

We are fast heading towards "the most wonderful time of the year" and members of the English Choir of Teulada Moraira are well into rehearsals for their annual concert of traditional carols and Christmas music.

A varied selection of old and new has been chosen for the choir to sing to you. From the beautiful "Prelude to Advent" which is a traditional 15th century french work set to music by Frederic Chopin and the hauntingly sweet "Silent Night". to Rudolf the red nosed Reindeer and "Walking in the air"the theme from the "Snowman" also the very dramatic "March of the Kings" and "The three Persian Kings" Added to all of this we are hoping for much audience participation!

Carol sheets, containing the words to all the verses of all your favourites will be provided.

As usual the choir will be under the baton of Musical Director Jan Gardner-Brown and accompanied by Heather Butcher. In all it will be a lovely, fun evening in a beautiful setting and we look forward to seeing you there.

The concert begins at 7pm on Friday 6 December at Moraira's Parish Church, La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de los Desemparados.

The U3A Craft group will be selling their wares and creations at a Charity Craft Fayre which is to be held at Los Amigos Bar San Roque Square on 3 Dec 11am-2pm. This is a great opportunity to start your Christmas Shopping. Money raised will go to a local charity.

The U3A Choir have two dates for your diary in December and invite you to join in with Carol Services in Gandia and Denia. The first will be at The Parroquia de Sant Josep Church in Gandia on 4 December starting at 6.30pm. The second will be at the Emita de les Rotes Church, in Denia, on 11 December starting at 6.30pm.

This church is a quaint building set in its own court yard area and easy to find on the Jávea side of Denia. Everyone will be welcome, in past years this has been a well attended service and a great evening.

Every year members of the Oliva U3A organise a Christmas Party for the Children of the El Bastidor school. Members fill shoes boxes with presents for all the children.. The group have just recently handed a cheque to the home for over 600€ which they raised through a BBQ and dance.
