Specsavers Ópticas collect almost 400 kilos of food and essential items for those in need
Specsavers Ópticas stores have collected a total of 389 kilos of food, toiletries and household products to be donated to those in need in their communities. In Javea, the generous residents donated an incredible 120 kilos, filling 12 large boxes with donations. The nine stores on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and in Mallorca have got behind the Operation Kilo campaign and collected food during the months of November and December for Spain’s Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL). FESBAL operate throughout the country and have a network of 55 regional food banks where they collect and store donated food and essential items. These are then distributed via local charities and associations to ensure all donations reach vulnerable people in their local areas. The Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca collaborated with the food bank for the Alicante province (Banco de Alimentos Alicante) to ensure the food donations got to those people who really need them. The store directors were delighted with the response to the campaign and thanked their clients and local residents for supporting those less fortunate than themselves by bringing donations into the store. They were also happy to see that many people who brought in food donations also took advantage of the opportunity to have a free eye test and check their vision and eye health was good ahead of the Christmas holidays. Store director Mike Stone commented, “Despite terrible weather at the end of November and the beginning of December, the charitable residents of Javea braved the conditions and donated food and toiletries for this important cause and we’d like to thank them for their generosity throughout this campaign. Between our two stores in Javea and Calpe, we have managed to collect 170 kilos of much needed food and essential items, which have been donated to Banco de Alimentos Alicante to distribute to their users at the start of this year.” l Find out more about the important work the Spanish Federation of Food Banks is doing on their website www.fesbal.org. RECOMMENDED GARAGES
urther to my previous article last month, of why Jennifer Cunningham Insurances is special, I felt it was important to provide some more information. Our special Expat car policies with Liberty Seguros have further benefits, one of which is Recommended Garages.
To be a recommended garage for Liberty Seguros is a thorough and rigorous process, to ensure that the services offered are of the highest standard. What does this mean for the policy holder? If your car claim is opened by our Claims Administrator, you will be offered a choice of Liberty Seguros Recommended Garages in your area, in the first instance. These particular garages are far more beneficial for you, as you will be given preferential treatment and any work done will be guaranteed for two years. These garages can provide replacement vehicles, subject to availability and this can be arranged directly with the garage and your repairs booked to coincide with this availability. The garage will initially self-assess the repairs required, which will speed up the process of the works. However, for larger damages, an assessor will be required, as is normally the case, and this will be arranged by the garage, directly with Liberty Seguros. Your vehicle will be valeted at the end of the process and you have the option of a free general
check-up. As a Liberty customer, any private repairs can be arranged at a special discount. Obviously the garage for your repairs will always be your choice. But with all these benefits, why would you choose anywhere else? There are so many advantages of dealing with a specialist insurance company, for example rather than a bank and of course, at Jennifer Cunningham Insurances, I offer the services of a specialist Claims Administrator to make the process as smooth, easy and stress free as possible. Liberty Seguros Expat policies and Terms and Conditions are in various languages, including English, which also makes life much easier for you and are tailored for the Expat requirements and expectations. Expat policies are not just for car insurance, but for most of the insurance policies we provide. l For further information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net

www.femalefocusonline.com With love in the air this month, and last month celebrating 30 years of being married, I am hoping to be showered with diamonds and pearls, both of which are supposed to be the gift for 30 years. When I mentioned this to hubby he said something about a diamond drill bit and pearls of wisdom.... Not quite what I had in mind but hey ho.
I am loving my new silicon covers, which you use instead of cling film, and mesh bags for using in the supermarkets for buying loose fruit and veg. I know a lot of you will be thinking 'big deal' but I heard someone say that it was better to have lots of people making a few changes than few people making dramatic changes and it inspired me to start make some changes. We hope you like the new look and the new items we are running this month we have features on Dragon's Den Star Deborah Meaden, Richard Armitage, and "The Only Way Is Essex" Charlie King as well as your favourites including health and beauty, home and garden, finance, forthcoming events, charity news etc, etc. Put the kettle on and enjoy... Five tips for protecting and growing
your investments
By James Johnson, Associate Partner, Blevins Franks
C
areful planning plays a vital role in securing your financial security over the long term. Here are five key tips that can help.
1. Define your requirements: Your portfolio must be tailored for your specific circumstances and goals, with the right balance of risk/return for your peace of mind. While it is difficult to assess your own tolerance for risk, an experienced adviser can create an objective risk profile for you. 2. Establish your timeline: The longer you have to invest, the more risk you can generally afford to take. With time you can better ride out market volatility and benefit from compound returns. Make sure your investments are ‘liquid’ enough for you to access capital when required. 3. Insist on diversification: Spreading investments across asset classes, geographic regions and market sectors minimises risk by limiting your exposure to any one area. To take this further, choose an adviser who uses a ‘multi-manager’ approach to spread investments across several carefully selected fund managers. 4. Incorporate effective tax planning: Are your arrangements tailored for your life in Spain or are they better suited to a UK resident? Explore arrangements that shelter capital from tax, providing taxefficient income for you in Spain while protecting future heirs. You need to make sure you meet your tax liabilities in both Spain and the UK (or wherever you have assets). 5. Regularly review your strategy: Annual reviews help keep things on track if circumstances change and let you take advantage of new opportunities. With today’s Brexit and global political uncertainty, this is especially important to help control risk and encourage positive long-term returns. For the best results, take personalised, professional, cross-border advice to help protect and grow your wealth, not only during your lifetime but for the next generations. This article should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com.

Chit Chat - Host Families Needed For This Summer

hit Chat Summer Camp for children in Jávea is one of the most successful language summer schools in Spain. With 40 years’ experience organising summer camps, we are now recruiting more native English speaking Host Families.
Many of our host families enjoy hosting year after year, but new Host Families are also needed. If you live in Jávea, Benitachell, Gata, Moraira, Jesus Pobre or Pedreguer and you would like to earn some extra money in July and August, and are able to offer a caring and comfortable home to Spanish children - aged from 8 to 15 - for 2 weeks at a time, please call Helena on 650 426 677. Helena visits all new Host Families to get to know you a little and to discuss your preferences for the ages of the children to be hosted and whether you would prefer boys or girls. The children are at home with you overnight and go off to the Chit Chat school by bus for the day. They return about 5pm and are with you for the evening. On the weekend in the middle of their stay, the children go on an organised trip on the Saturday and are with you on the Sunday. The time that the children spend with you is an important part of their experience. This family time is used to get to know the students, to have the family evening meal together and to encourage the children to practice their English and participate in British family life. Chit Chat gives full support to the Host Families and different types of families are considered, families with or without children of their own and retired people. There is absolutely no need for the Host Family to be able to speak Spanish. If you are interested, please call Helena the local Supervisor for Chit Chat. CHIT CHAT. New Year, new-build?
re you planning to buy an off-plan home in 2020? You’ll have lots of choice thanks to the surge in new developments along the Spanish Costas. While there are obvious benefits to buying a brand-new Spanish property, purchasing one requires careful research and appropriate legal protection. Here are 6 key things to consider… 1) Payment will be in stages so plan carefully. Off-plan buyers will first pay a reservation deposit, typically €5,000€6,000 (+ VAT), which reserves their chosen unit. Next, a sales contract will need to be signed, usually within 30 days of reserving the property and requiring the buyer to pay a deposit worth between 10% and 30% of the purchase value. After that, the amount and frequency of stage payments due until completion will vary depending on the development. High value properties, such as custom-built villas, usually require several stage payments. 2) When purchasing off-plan, all stage payments made by the buyer should by law be protected by a bank guarantee from the developer. This way, your money is safeguarded in the event of the developer going bankrupt or breaching the contract. Bank guarantees, which will be verified by your lawyer, should not be issued for a property that does not have the necessary planning permits. 3) Your off-plan contract should include a specified completion date with a 30 or 60-day rider, stating the property must be finished and delivered with all relevant paperwork in place, including Final Works Certificate and Certificate of Habitation. Your lawyer will check these things, as well as do thorough due diligence on the land ownership status and building/ planning permits of your chosen development, not forgetting the financial credibility of the developer. 4) Think about exchange rate movement. From start to finish, an off-plan purchase typically takes between 1
& 2 years. The exchange rate is constantly changing and over longer periods there is the possibility of it fluctuating significantly. This could affect the cost of your stage payments and final balance, which will be fixed in € but not in £. For peace of mind, consider forward purchasing all or some of your required €s through a currency specialist. 5) Spanish banks can provide mortgages for off-plan purchases but only once the property is completed and fully registered. Therefore, buyers must cover deposits and stage payments themselves. Buyers can get an approval in principle before completion or even signing an off-plan contract, but you should be prepared to update your application nearer the scheduled date of completion. Be aware that a mortgage will be based on the bank’s valuation at the point of completion, which may be different to the original purchase price that was agreed when the off-plan contract was signed. 6) On taking possession of your new property, make the developer aware of any faults or defects immediately – a process known as snagging. Examples could be windows or cupboards that don’t close properly, cracks in the new plaster, poorly fitted lights, problems with the plumbing or even mistakes with the interior layout. The developer should agree to rectify any issues within an agreed timeframe. l Sun Lawyers is experienced with helping foreign buyers
complete off-plan purchases successfully, providing all the necessary legal protection throughout the entire process right through to post-completion.

Richard Armitage
T
he makers of Safe are back with a new Netflix thriller in The Stranger. Lead actor Richard Armitage tells Gemma Dunn more.
INTRODUCE US TO YOUR CHARACTER AND YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE STORY
Richard Armitage as Adam Price - PA Photo/Netflix I play a character called Adam Price who's a successful lawyer, family man, a dad and a husband. They are a pretty aspirational family and their existence is happy. They are heavily scheduled with their lives and I feel like sometimes they pass like ships in the night but it's a good life, they function well and it's a very modern family. The household is balanced, and mum and dad take equal roles, they drive nice cars, have a beautiful house and then The Stranger sidles up to Adam at the football club and drops a bombshell on him. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE DRAMA? Everything was a surprise as the journey that this character goes on is full of trap-doors and dead-ends. He's completely blind to the situation. Also, the big reveal happens in one of the first scenes of the show and you think, 'Where do you go from here?' He receives this damning information and confronts his wife in the first 10 minutes. That interested me because it's usually the other way around, you get to the end and he finds out what's happened. WERE YOU FAMILIAR WITH HARLAN AND DANNY'S WORK AS WELL? Yes, I watched Safe, which Danny and Harlan wrote together, which I loved. I was aware of Harlan's work because I'm based in New York and Harlan is such a prolific writer both in the UK and America. The thing that I really like about Harlan's work is that it's always about a man or a woman who feels like you in an extraordinary and escalating situation. There were elements of Gone Girl in our story and I thought, 'Oh this is really thrilling, this is an ordinary life that under the surface has become extraordinary'. Female Fe male Focus February 2020
HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR THE ROLE? I pored through the book a number of times to extract as much detail as I could and then started to build a family photo album of their lives. Because the story happens in the first 10 PA/PA Wire/PA Images minutes, I had to build their life before the bombshell hit. The album was their lives and their achievements, the birth of their kids, the holidays they went on. Alongside this I usually create a sound track, so I've got a visual and an audible account of their lives. I built the background of the characters through that and I wrote a biography of how Adam and Corrine met. That found its way into a speech at the end of the story, so it was all connected to real events that I'd created and drawn on my own experiences to put in there. WHAT'S ADAM'S REACTION TO HIS ENCOUNTER WITH THE STRANGER? It was probably one of the most challenging scenes I've had because of its extraordinarily obscure flavour. If somebody comes up to you that you don't know and starts to tell you personal things about your life which are absurd, how do you react to it? What he doesn't know and doesn't show are the most interesting parts of the scene, and yet I had to receive what she was telling me. So, it's almost like being in a vacuum and he has to hear what she's saying and believe it but at the same time keep her at arm's length. We played with loads of different versions of the scene where he was very angry or completely mystified. He receives what she's telling him but it's not until later on at home when he starts to confront his wife that it's really sinking in. WHAT DO YOU HOPE THE AUDIENCE WILL TAKE AWAY FROM THE SHOW? I hope they come with Adam on this detective journey because he's trying to get to the bottom of not what happened but what's happened to her. Initially you think it's going to be a big expose on what his wife has done, the lie that she's told etc. but it's not about that at all. It's about finding out where she's gone and why. I hope that the audience are sitting on the edge of their seats trying to find Corinne as much as Adam is.
PA Photo/Netflix
How would you react if your whole world was turned on its head in an instant? That's exactly what happens to Adam Price, a happily married father of two, whose charmed existence is rocked to the core after a shock revelation. Neftflix's The Stranger reunites the team behind hit series Safe, having been adapted by Danny Brocklehurst from the novel by Harlan Coben. Richard Armitage, 48, takes the lead in the psychological thriller. What else can The Hobbit actor tell us about the show?
AND FINALLY, WORKING WITH NETFLIX, DID YOU FEEL A SENSE OF CREATIVE FREEDOM? I do feel like certain networks have always had their brand identity, and actually it's a much more open field with Netflix; you never hear that thing of, 'We can't really do that because it's not a Netflix thing' - anything goes really, which feels much more fertile. It's just letting the content speak for it and being prepared to take on something unexpected. The Stranger launched on Netflix on Thursday 30 January.

Walk Your Way Well
FOCUS ON Community
by Niamh O'Sheehan
very month I spend a few paragraphs talking to the lovely FF readers about the seemingly endless benefits you can reap by joining me in my favourite activity: Walking. Maybe you’ve taken heed or maybe you’ve rapidly flicked the page as soon as you see there is exertion involved. For the latter of you, I suggest you move along more swiftly than usual as this month I’m going to write about a local annual walking challenge that will scare the boots off the best of us; The Mirador Challenge. Still with me? Oh, I AM glad. Because I was exaggerating again as I sometimes dare to do. The Mirador Challenge is a medium-distance endurance walk of approximately 29 kilometres (yes, I did say TWENTY NINE) which links a network of 15 spectacular viewpoints located along the beautiful coastline of Jávea. It’s open to everyone aged between 16 and 116! This challenge is not easy, but it is certainly within the realm of possibility if you have some level of fitness combined with a good dose of determination. The first thing to know is that it is aimed at teams of FIVE so you’ll need to coax a few friends into joining you. It is recommended that you undertake some training (a couple of times a week) to ensure your muscles are somewhat acclimatised to what they are about to endure. If you live in the area you could tackle short sections of the route in advance to get accustomed to it. The teams begin at sunrise at the Granadella mirador and then pass along the coast in a northward direction to arrive at the last viewpoint of 'Els Molins'. This iconic windmill sits above the town of Jávea. It is an epic journey, and since it’s conception it has more than achieved its original aim to highlight the existence of these monumental and historic look-outs. There are two disciplines for taking part in the Mirador Challenge: The 'Sports' option is for those who want to test themselves by
covering the entire length of the challenge in the fastest time possible. The 'Leisure' option is for those who want to take it easy and enjoy the stunning views as they pass along the route. It’s also a truly wonderful day out with a best dressed prize and several of the teams fundraising for local charities. The sense of community and camaraderie is palpable. But don’t be fooled, so too is the competitive drive of some of the fitter teams. There are rules, regulations and guidelines available on the website www.javeamigos.com. But, the most important thing you’ll need to know is that you will have the experience of a lifetime. I shall be there with my “Blister Sisters” and hope to see many of you along the way. If you’d like to be involved, but don’t fancy actually walking, then there is much demand for volunteers to assist at checkpoints. The walkers love to hear your encouraging salutations along the route to keep their morale high. You are more important than a good pair of walking shoes! When is the next Mirador Challenge? The next edition of the Mirador Challenge is on Sunday 5 April. The event is limited to 30 teams and registration is on a first-come, first served basis. So, step up quickly! Email: mirador@javeamigos.com for more information.

Why go to a nursing home when you can still
enjoy living in your own home? Do you or you partner find it difficult getting around, even at home?
M
any people who are of a certain age, or live with a disability can find getting around, even at home, to be a challenge. This can be due to many factors such as poor access, narrow doors, steps, etc. On top of that, things like getting in and out of the bath, going to the toilet, and even getting in and out of bed can be a struggle. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
At this point, many people are reluctantly forced to look towards sheltered housing, or even nursing homes. They don’t want to leave their home but they feel they have no choice. It doesn’t have to be this way. Independent Living Spain (ILS) specialises in building alterations and the supply and installation of specialist equipment designed to help you live at home easily, often with minimal or no support, so you can continue to enjoy everything you love about living in your own home. Overhead and portable hoists can help you get around. Body slings can ease you into and out of your pool. Bunions or HAV?
www.femalefocusonline.com
he Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation.
When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise. What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet? We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues. Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless.
Suffering with Bunions?
- No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring. Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast. We're looking for experienced knitters who can give their time to help us knit these to donate to our ladies who may need them. ormer star of hit show "The Only Way Is Essex" Charlie King, called Samaritans in 2011 when he was struggling with the demands of a highly stressful job, and the pressure to behave in a certain way:
“I grew up with my mum and sisters, dad wasn’t around so I didn’t really have a male role model. I knew I wasn’t really like a typical boy. Rugby and football didn’t appeal to me, I was more interested in singing and dancing and I never really had a proper girlfriend. My mum has a successful business, and from a young age I was thrust into a business world, I felt under pressure to do well and had to live up to high expectations. I worked non-stop, and became obsessive about the restaurant – I wouldn’t share responsibilities, and had to be there every waking hour. I was highly stressed and struggled with anxiety. I felt I had no purpose, I was lonely. I started to get really depressed. I had no male friends, or a girlfriend. I remember walking my dog, and my head feeling like it was going to explode. I reached the point where I felt I couldn’t go on, like there was no point in my existence. My family didn’t know what to do or say. This was when I first called Samaritans. Speaking to them really helped me to put my thoughts in order and gave me the reassurance I needed that everything would be OK. I called six or seven times in total. I also sought help through my GP, and joined a gym. Doing regular exercise gave me something to focus on. All these events made me realise I needed to become more open and let people into my life. I wish I had realised it is OK to be different, that I didn’t have to conform to a certain stereotype of how a man should be. I also realised the importance of living your life. Work isn’t significant in the bigger picture of things. I wish I’d talked about my problems at a much earlier stage. I realise that if I had spoken to someone I probably wouldn’t have got to the point where I was considering suicide. If I hadn’t called Samaritans, I honestly don’t know where I’d be today. I have my life to thank them for.” Should you identify with any of these issues and want to talk to someone in complete confidence then why not give us a call. Cosmetic Surgery for the Roaring 2020s
any of us want to put our best face forward, believing that appearance is the key to success in life, love and work. So what predictions can be made for this new decade? Will the roaring 1920s repeat themselves one hundred years on?
Improving confidence levels One of the biggest advantages of cosmetic surgery is enhancing one’s appearance. For some, modifying a specific physical feature via cosmetic surgery can be a game changer, which increases confidence levels and self-image. Improving a person’s physical appearance can be the boost needed to see themselves differently, change the attitudes that govern their lives and feel more accepted. And if a common medical procedure is all it takes, then why not do it? Providing significant health benefits to a suffering population In some cases, cosmetic surgery can improve a person’s health. A person suffering from chronic congestion due to a deviated septum can undergo rhinoplasty (a nose job) and breathe freely at last. A heavily endowed woman experiencing regular pain as a result of the extra pressure on her back and shoulders can have a breast reduction. With cosmetic surgery, skin cancer can be removed and open wounds can be closed. Helping people gain a competitive edge There is an increasing pressure to look younger and more attractive to better compete in the working world.
Female Fe male Focus February 2020
This is related to the Halo Effect, a cognitive bias that most people harbour, inducing them to connect positive personality traits with physical attractiveness and provide these people with better opportunities. The trend of going under the knife in the hopes of looking younger and remaining relevant at work is on the rise. In fact, in a study formulated by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 73% believed that appearance and youthful looks are critical for getting hired, a promotion, or acquiring new clients. If this is truly the case, then cosmetic surgery isn’t a folly, it’s a true competitive advantage. The Bottom Line: Some say that cosmetic surgery is simply a Band-Aid solution, and that changing an aspect of a person’s appearance does not solve the problem at its root. Maybe they are right. Certainly Cosmetic Surgery is not something ever to be rushed into. So regardless of what's trending in the decade ahead, be sure to consult a reputable and experienced medical practitioner. Here on the Costa Blanca we have Dr Ignacio Poole who is a specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery. He is also a certified family doctor / GP. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, then before rushing into things go and meet with him to explore what medical or aesthetic solutions may be available. Protect your teeth from acid erosion id you know that there is only one thing that actually harms teeth …and that is ACID which softens and dissolves tooth enamel? Plaque, if you don´t clean it off irritates and infects the gums since it contains constantly growing bacteria.
This acid either comes directly from food and drinks, or from dental caries where acid is formed by the action of oral bacteria on dietary sugar. Food in itself does not harm teeth! If you have frequent sugar attacks on your teeth, then the bacteria in your mouth are constantly producing acid which dissolves enamel and that way creates cavities that themselves become full of bacteria. This is why you should limit sugar frequency ideally to mealtimes and not between meals. Sugar is the enemy for teeth and for health, and so should be in moderation. Acid erosion foods These are foods that have a ph below 7 (1 being the strongest) such as lemons and limes. Don’t brush your teeth after eating them, if you do you will multiply the enamel damage by 10,000 times and make teeth very sensitive. Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes and similarly common fruit items are as acidic as they are healthy, even when diluted with water. However, these products aren't the only foods out there known for their low pH level. Others include:• Pickles, and vinegar in dressings • Most fruits • Tomato products (pasta sauce, ketchup, salsa, hot sauce) • Coffee • Wines and fruit teas, cider Why acid causes damage… Acid dissolves the surface and softens tooth enamel, some is dissolved into the mouth- at this point, if you brush your teeth you will scratch off lots more enamel making the tooth thinner. If you don’t touch it then the saliva will repair most of it with calciumthis is one function of saliva – repairing acid attacks. Eroded teeth are thinner and often discoloured and the yellow dentine shines through from below. How to Lessen Dental Erosion / thinning of tooth enamel Try eating any acidic foods alongside foods that have a higher pH level, and are therefore low in acidity. Some of these foods include nuts, cheese, oatmeal, mangos, melons, bananas, eggs, vegetables, brown rice and whole grains. See your dentist yearly for checking and cleaning, dental erosion can be spotted in its early stages and advanced erosion, where the teeth are thinner and chipping, can be fixed with composite resins. Use a fluoride toothpaste, which strengthens enamel and brush twice a day maximum – your main clean before breakfast in the morning. NEVER brush after acidic food or drink - wait several hours. If your teeth are thin and chipped or looking scruffy then book in for a consultation to find out what can be done to restore and strengthen your teeth.

Knee Pain?
O
Page 20
www.femalefocusonline.com
It could be arthritis. What is osteoarthritis and what can be done for it?
steoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the knee. It is a degenerative, "wear-and-tear" type of arthritis that occurs most often in people 50 years of age and older, but may occur in younger people, too. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage in the knee joint gradually wears away. As the cartilage wears away, it becomes frayed and rough, and the protective space between the bones decreases. This can result in bone rubbing on bone and produce painful bone spurs. A knee joint affected by arthritis may be painful and inflamed. Generally, the pain develops gradually over time, although sudden onset is also possible. There are other symptoms, as well: • The joint may become stiff and swollen, making it difficult to bend and straighten the knee. • Pain and swelling may be worse in the morning, or after sitting or resting. • Vigorous activity may cause pain to flare up. • Loose fragments of cartilage and other tissue can interfere with the smooth motion of joints. The knee may "lock" or "stick" during movement. It may creak, click, snap or make a grinding noise (crepitus). • Pain may cause a feeling of weakness or buckling in the knee. • Many people with arthritis note increased joint pain with rainy weather. If you are not sure if this fits your description of pain, you can call an osteopath for an appointment to get an accurate diagnose to establish if it is arthritis or a simple muscle strain or tendon issue or meniscal problems. Then treatment can be done to manage the pain. Osteopathic Treatment and exercise advice can reduce arthritic pain and avoid or delay any operations. l Denia Osteopath, Heidi Tryland. What to do if you have a Nosebleed
I
cky and sometimes scary, nosebleeds are not usually a sign of anything serious. They're common, particularly in children, and most can be easily treated. But confusion can reign when someone has a sudden nosebleed. What do you do to stop it? Very recently a friend of ours had one in a busy bar, and many suggestions were made by the patrons in the bar, all wellmeaning, but some of them completely ineffective.
The inside of the nose is delicate and nosebleeds happen when it's damaged. This is usually caused by: • picking your nose • blowing your nose too hard • the inside of your nose being too dry (because of a change in air temperature) But sometimes nosebleeds that need medical attention can come from deeper inside the nose and usually affect adults. They can be caused by: • an injury or broken nose • high blood pressure • conditions that affect the blood vessels or how the blood clots • certain medicines, like warfarin • and sometimes the cause of a nosebleed is completely unknown. Certain people are more prone to getting nosebleeds, including children (they usually grow out of them by 11), elderly people and pregnant women. Here, according to the UK NHS is what you should do: • keep calm. Bloody noses can be scary, but they are rarely dangerous. • sit or stand upright. Do not tilt your head back or lie flat. This may cause you to choke on blood.
Female Fe male Focus February 2020
• pinch your nose just above your nostrils for 10 to 15 minutes. Use a clock to keep track of time and try to resist the urge to peek after a few minutes to see if your nose has stopped bleeding. • lean forward and breathe through your mouth • if you have one available, place an icepack (or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel) at the top of your nose • skip foreign objects. Do not pack the nose with tissues or other household items like tampons. This can make the bleeding worse. Seek immediate medical attention if: • your nosebleed lasts longer than 10 to 15 minutes • the bleeding seems excessive • you are swallowing a large amount of blood that makes you vomit • the bleeding started after a blow to your head • you are feeling weak, dizzy or having difficulty breathing After a nosebleed stops, for 24 hours try not to: • blow your nose • pick your nose • drink hot drinks or alcohol • do any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise • pick any scabs

Besan ki Barfi - Chickpea Fudge
T
his vegan chickpea fudge showcases the earthy nutty flavour of besan flour; the barfi has an almost peanut butter taste. Gram flour is sautéed on a low heat combined with sugar syrup to make this mouth watering treat. The trick is to ensure the flour is fully cooked until it turns a golden colour and imparts a lovely nutty aroma. Ingredients 200g gram flour 100ml coconut oil
100g sugar 150ml water 14 blanched almonds
Makes: 14-16 Recipe Line an 8inch x 5inch (12x21cm) loaf tin. In a heavy bottomed saucepan heat the oil until medium hot. Take of the heat and tip in the gram flour and mix until the flour is fully coated with the oil. Place the pan on a low to medium heat; stir the mixture for about 25 minutes. Keep moving the mixture otherwise it will catch and burn. The flour will go through several stages once the oil begins to ooze out of the mixture and turn a golden colour, remove from the heat and set aside. In another saucepan boil the sugar and water for 8 minutes. Gradually add the syrup to the besan mixture – mix well until lump free. Pour the mixture into the greased tin, spread out and stud the blanched almonds on top. Leave to set for 40 minutes. Once cool cut into squares and serve. Can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

Did you know? The tradition of 29 Feb being the day that a woman can ask for a man's hand in marriage comes from the tradition of Bachelor's Day, which is an Irish tradition on Leap Day (29 Feb) allowing women to initiate dances and propose marriage. If the proposal was refused the man was expected to buy the woman a silk gown or, by the mid-20th century, a fur coat. The tradition is supposed to originate from a deal that Saint Bridget struck with Saint Patrick. Female Fe male Focus February 2020

Treat your man’s feet this Valentines T
FOCUS ON Community
o be honest, most ladies know how to take care of our feet and enjoy a professional pedicure from time to time. But what about our menfolk?
A lot of men keep their feet hidden away and often for good reason. So instead of waiting for summer, let’s start on the road to good foot health now so any undesirable conditions can be treated before the sandal season. Pedicures aren’t about getting some polish on your toes. They’re about having healthy feet. Often our poor feet are exhausted, sweaty, rough, scaly, and stinky, with overgrown or over trimmed toenails. A pedicure will thoroughly clean the area underneath your toenails, scrub the bottom of your feet to get rid of any dead skin or callouses and cutting those claws that used to be toe nails! And although pedicures are definitely relaxing, there are hygienic benefits to paying close attention to your feet.
Treat your Valentine man to a Mimis Kru pedicure with leg, foot, and back massage at the Mimis Kru Foot Spa! €20 in February only. Gift vouchers available. The Benefits of Pedicures 1. Healthy nails, trimmed properly Your nails will be clipped and shaped, neatly and safely, without risking in-growns. All dead skin will be trimmed back and any gunk removed, all of which could otherwise lead to fungal build-up.
2. Smooth skin All the dry, peely skin and callouses from your feet will be buffed away. After all the exfoliating, a soothing lotion restores moisture and keeps skin smooth. No more painful cracked heels or ugly patches on your soles. 3. Better-smelling feet The result is healthier feet and a decreased likelihood for odour and bacterial / fungal build-up. 4. Increased circulation The massage and the hot water soak improves circulation in your feet and stimulates the joints, leaving you with a spring in your step that rejuvenates your entire body. l Mimis Kru,

How much would it cost to redesign my garden? s a garden designer I naturally stay in touch with design based information websites and blogs, I recently received an interesting one about ‘How much would it cost to redesign my garden’.
Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth
The article had been put together using professional garden designers and landscapers giving their input into the article to get a more balanced point of view.
Female Fe male Focus February 2020
&
We fit within the category of garden design /landscaping, and because we do all the work in house it does mean our customers receive a better value price for the design work. What was nice for me to see, but also surprised me, was the value the designers charge. It’s not that I want to say it was expensive, as much as it puts a true value on the work they have to do. Something I know more than too well. The article compared the garden designer to an architect, managing similar projects in the same way as a build project, and gardens can have as much, if not a higher cost than building work done. The article put design fees between 8 and 20% of the total project cost. I think the sad truth is that because many people feel they can´t do building work, but they can do gardening, they seem to automatically devalue the work. But the truth of the matter is to get a real garden, something that has been designed and created to work for you, is just as much work as building a house.

The cost per m2 is higher, as there are a lot more materials involved which means a lot more labour, and a lot of the materials have to sit outside and take the abuse from the elements. My main point is with Charlesworth Gardens, you have a designer who has been involved in design all of his life, a design degree, a background in architecture, building and landscaping at some of the most prestigious homes in the UK as well as building gardens at Chelsea Flower Show, who takes an innovative approach to materials and their use to create things other companies simply cannot. We have to charge for design and site surveys as it costs the company time and this is only fair. We only charge a very fair amount for our work. If you go anywhere, another company or a garden centre and they don’t want to charge you, ask the question why? Who will do the design work, are they actually qualified, do they care about my needs as a customer and also, if they can afford to not charge me, is this because they are going to charge a high premium with ridiculous profits, or is it because they simply don’t care enough about giving me a full design and breakdown? Remember that similarly to an architect, the design is part of the contract of the agreed work between the landscaper and or contractor for the work. Without a solid design how do you quantify materials, crÊate an estimate or quote? Charlesworth Gardens have been designing and building gardens of distinction for nearly 20 years on the Costa Blanca alone excluding previous experience. We design because we care, because we want our customers to have the most amazing gardens.
Choose the company you can trust, you can contact us to discuss our fees for design and make your first step to having a stunning new garden.

I didn't go the gym so I thought some sit ups on the bedroom floor would be a great start. Whenever I do exercise first thing in the morning, I feel totally energised all day. It also stops me rushing straight to the kitchen to eat things I will later regret. Instead I do exercise, just a few minutes are enough for me, and then a fabulous bowl of fresh fruit chopped up - another kick start to my day. Because I didn’t want to go anywhere due to the weather, I thought it would be a great day to clear out the clutter in my life. I started with the wardrobe and being ruthless by getting rid of anything that did not fit, that I haven't worn for a year, anything that looked shabby (I confess to being a collector of junk) anything with missing buttons or needing repairs, and anything that was really out of date due to fashion or my age. Then it was the turn of the shoe rack. Yes, all the shoes that I had bought in a sale because they were a good bargain but they were uncomfortable to wear! (Come on, you can all confess to an event like that, I bet). They all went in the charity bag and lastly all the clothes, scarves, bags and accessories that made me look like a trinket queen or old fashioned and frumpy. I felt brilliant when I had finished that. Next was the dressing table and cupboards, full of all the lotions and potions, creams and jars of dreams. Yes, I am a big collector of anything that is sold to make me 'last longer'. The laundry shelves were next. I dismissed all the bedding that really had seen better days (and nights) and towels that were no longer white or fluffy. Now I was really motoring and still wearing my pyjamas, what a busy start to the day. Into the kitchen next, but not for breakfast, no, it was to clear out the cupboards of all the jars of pasta sauce that were months past their sell by date. By the time I stopped for my mid morning tea break I felt brilliant. A good clear out is essential to make room for all the great things coming into life. That means emotionally too.
I sat with my steaming hot cuppa writing about my feelings. I always have a little book on the go, filling it regularly with my brain dump of thoughts, feelings, emotions and ideas. That little book has brought some wonderful benefits to me and I strongly recommend you always have one handy. Some things I write about move me forward. I can say how I feel about things I have done or seen or felt and I can always learn from it. It's not like a naughty school report; it's to record everything I feel like noting down. If I have done something really great and it made me feel terrific - I write that too. So a great way to address this situation is to put them down on a piece of paper and just let them go. It's a bit like clearing out the clutter, it creates space. It's especially helpful to do this exercise of writing your thoughts and feeling towards the end of a busy or stressful day to enable sleep to come peacefully. Emptying the jumble of the day helps you relax and let go of the stress that has built throughout the day, allowing you to enjoy good quality sleep. I then got out my goals book and reviewed them all again. I added some new ones and updated the completed ones. I wrote a list of actions that I want to complete during the next few weeks. By the time I finished all this I felt so inspired, positive and motivated to go on and achieve so much more. Suddenly it was not a bleak winter's day, it was a golden opportunity and I had taken it. Opportunities present themselves in many ways. Be sure to look at events in a positive way so you never miss that special one that comes your way. Sometimes it can be a life changing event, and sometimes it is stumbling across a new road to travel - ultimately taking actions improves your life. Wherever you are in the world, take a look at what you are doing and look for ways to improve your confidence. Clearing out your clutter is a great start. One decision or one action can really change your life. Female Fe male Focus February 2020

Caritas Donation
Montgó Chorale were delighted to welcome another large and enthusiastic audience at the choir’s Christmas concert at the Loreto church in Jávea recently. It was a full house for this occasion, and the Loreto Church’s Cáritas, which provides financial and practical help and comfort to local families in need, was the beneficiary of the donations to the Retiring Collection. Consequently, on behalf of Montgó Chorale and those who attended the performance, the Choir Treasurer Peter Crossfield Lobb, together with other steering group members, was delighted to present 1450€ to Elly van de Wel, Director of Cáritas and other representatives of the charity, who in turn gave the choir a Certificate to mark the donation.

ne of the best sporting events of the year is underway and has even more excitement attached this time round as all teams are all embarking on bold new eras with a host of new coaches or an influx of playing talent. Wales are bidding to retain their Grand Slam crown. Following their Rugby World Cup semifinal defeat, Warren Gatland has been succeeded by his long-planned replacement Wayne Pivac. After a quarter-final World Cup exit, Ireland are looking to rebuild. Andy Farrell, the Englishman, is stepping up to the top job for the first time in his career and is joined by Mike Catt as attack coach. France also has a huge change in the coaching staff, with Fabien Galthie taking up the baton from Jacques Brunel. Adding former Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards into the mix, is this France’s chance to find their Championship feet once again? Italy’s Conor O’Shea left following the recent World Cup and they have confirmed that Franco Smith, the former Benetton Rugby and Toyota Cheetahs coach will take charge of their 2020 Guinness Six Nations campaign. The last Italian victory in the Championship was against Scotland in February 2015, could the South African bring success? Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is building Scotland's next generation of players. With hugely talented youngsters like Darcy Graham, Blair Kinghorn, Adam Hastings, Grant Stewart and Jake Kerr coming through, Scotland are feeling optimistic about the future. So close but so far, England ended 2019 having reached the final of the World Cup but losing out to South Africa. Eddie Jones is likely to be ringing big changes in the playing department. Harry Randall, Harry Williams, Nick Schonert, Joe Marchant and Ollie Thorley are names to keep an eye on, and Ted Hill and Joel Kpoku could be challenging for a pack position. With all these changes and more, it is setting itself up to be a very exciting Championship this year. Black Flame Bar, Grill & Carvery will have really great offers on drinks during the matches, and food is served all day. With widescreen TVs, a great family atmosphere and plenty of easy parking. Oh yes, and Beer! Black Flame Bar, Grill & Carvery (Formerly Monroes). Avda Garrofer, Monte Pedreguer, Pedreguer. For more details please see www.blackflame.es or call 96 576 1731.

No Looking Back book review A story of despair and hope - from a victim to a survivor. A powerful and emotionally-charged story of a young girl’s struggle for dignity and self-worth. Josephine Pritchard had been terrorised with control and domination all her childhood, a threatening violation which produced low self-esteem and abject misery. Josie thought her life was normal and believed her father’s violence and punishment was because of her inadequacies, so when he launched a savage attack on her mother, she believed the only way her mother would survive, was if she left her family home. ‘No Looking Back’ is a powerful, heart-warming story of how a traumatised teenager made a momentous decision which changed her life forever. She found the strength and courage to liberate herself from a life of darkness, and how she met a family who truly cared about her. Gradually, she learned how to trust and build her confidence, eventually growing into a strong, independent young woman.
About the author Shirley moved from Norfolk to the Jalon Valley fourteen years ago. Most of her working years were spent as a secretary in a large, rural primary school. Suddenly, with time on her hands, she started to write her first novel. ‘No Looking Back’ is her fifth novel to be published by Mirador Publishing. All her books are available on Amazon in paperback and as an ebook.
The U3A Vall Del Pop Craft Looking for Volunteers to Market Join the 2020 Committee At the General Assembly on 9 January the members were in reminded the new committee will be voted for at the Annual Jávea General Assembly in March. Nominees were requested from members who could spare Port a few hours each month to join the committee and help with For several years running the Jávea Port shopkeeper's association and Amata - the regional craft association - have been working together to organise a small but select craft market every Saturday and Sunday morning on the promenade near the Port. The market opens at 11:00 when artists and crafts people set up stalls to show what they have made with love, care and attention to detail. It's all their own work nothing imported, nothing made in a factory and nothing just strung together using bits and pieces bought in a craft shop. All in all a nice way to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning. Stroll along the Paseo Marítimo, have a drink or a little nosh at one of the many cafés, enjoy the view out to sea and mountains and then have a look at what all these creative people have produced, often to the live music of guitarist Victor Hugo. Once you’re in the Port of Jávea, you can have a look at the famous Virgen de Loreto church, built of concrete in the shape of a big ship. Or visit the Casa del Cable (Cable House). This building stands on the site of the original Casa del Cable, the official telegraph-station that, back in the 1860s, connected the Spanish mainland with Ibiza by means of a 100km long cable over the sea bottom. At present it houses a series of interesting art exhibitions. It is only a few steps from the craft fair and opens both Saturday and Sunday mornings (10:00 until 13:00). The stalls are open from 11:00 until 14:00 and you can find the exact location on Google Maps, looking for Craft Fair Jávea. They also have their own page in Facebook: feriaartesaniajavea. What a fantastic start to the year when the Costa Blanca region enjoyed bright sunshine and clear blue skies with temperatures in the high 20s enabling the JEC club members to take advantage of it on the first meeting of the year which was held on 16 January. A lunch had been booked for 70 members who would be attending, and the normal meeting point in Catral enabled some members to greet and meet on the sunny terrace for coffee before proceeding on a run organised by Dennis Wilson. This led everyone through a natural park area, and finally to Crevillent to the restaurant Las Palmeras where a number of members were already there after taking a more direct route. Once all the big cats had been lined up in the more private car park, making a wonderful sight, lots of photos were taken as owners discussed their pride and joy. Then member’s grouped all together in the beautiful gardens around the swimming pool, where drinks were served from the outside bar. This enabled all of the members to chill and chat for a while in the lovely sunshine, prior to sitting for lunch in the bright and elegant function room that overlooks the entire garden area. DEBORAH MEADEN: 'I GO OUTSIDE BAREFOOT AND JUST IN MY DRESSING GOWN AND WALK AROUND THE FARM' By Gabrielle Fagan, Press Association Dragon's Den star Deborah Meaden tells Gabrielle Fagan how her menagerie of animals helps keep her grounded. Seriously scary and famous for that killer stare when a prospective investment doesn't appeal to her, BBC's Dragon's Den star Deborah Meaden turns out to be completely different off screen.
What's the secret of the success of Dragons' Den? "Anyone can have an idea and wonder if it would work so it's very easy for people to identify with. It appeals across the generations from great Chatting at her at her country grandparents to children. home, a 10-bedroom farm in "I value my private life Somerset, that she shares with and never wanted to be her husband, Paul, she's warm, famous so agreed to go friendly and funny as she on Dragons' Den because describes their menagerie of I thought it would last animals. just a couple of years but "At the last count it was seven here we are 15 seasons horses, three sheep, a pig, later. I've earned them and there's more smiling lines than frowning lines, and that's all I need to see in life. It shows there's been more laughter than the dark, sadder moments." Have you ever experienced discrimination as a woman in business? "I'm sure I have but I don't really pay any attention to it. When women ask me how I deal with difficult situations in working life, I say, 'Don't take your gender into account because if you do you're signalling to whoever you're dealing with that they should take it into account.' Ignoring things is very powerful - it denies the other person a response or a reaction which is what they want." How do you look after your health? "I'm healthy and fit but training and dancing 12 hours a day on Strictly caused metatarsalgia - pain in the balls of the feet. Basically the show brought out a weakness in my feet that would probably have happened anyway but 10 years later on. "Steroid injections enabled me to stay in the competition and I continued treatment for a few years afterwards for the pain, but nowadays it's not as noticeable as it used to be. "I fractured my pelvis a few years ago in a fall from a horse but I've totally recovered. I can still climb over five-bar gates and lift bales of hay around. "I enjoy riding, dancing, dog walking, travelling, and eating well - my husband's the cook at home because he's fantastic at it. The only pill I take is an anti-histamine as I'm allergic to horses, cats and dogs." How do you look after your wellbeing? "Looking after my animals ensures I'm not the sole focus of my attention which is helpful as you're less likely to dwell on things. "Talking to people and hearing about their lives and their point of view is, I think, intensely powerful and beneficial for your mental wellbeing. It keeps your mind open and engaged. "Financial freedom allows me to pick and choose what I want to do but I have a great understanding that life isn't perfect and realistically never can be. You have to strive to be as happy as you can, try to put mistakes right as quickly as possible if you make them and then forgive yourself, and look forward and search for new opportunities."
