Specsavers Opticas supports charity Formación Sengal to improve the education of African children The charity Formación Senegal provides schools and vocational training for African children and young people in the Louga region of Senegal, a rural area of the African Sahel with difficult geosocial conditions. “We build, coordinate and support educational projects and any initiative related to training”, explained the president of Formación Senegal, Toni Zamorano. To contribute to the education and learning development of these African children and young people, it is often necessary to correct problems with their sight. Specsavers Opticas in Jávea and Calpe have been doing their bit towards this cause since 2016. So far, they have donated approximately 600 glasses as part of the "Empresas con Corazón" initiative. Zamorano pointed out that "the glasses are being given to people in the Louga region of in Senegal. As an NGO, we send containers of humanitarian material, so we have our own logistics for the shipments. Together with the local area coordinators we distribute the glasses to people who need them the most. Mike Stone, Director of Specsavers Opticas in Jávea and Calpe explained; "Although we have been collecting glasses since opening in 2006, however our long term collaborator stopped supporting the cause and we didn’t want the donations of glasses to go to waste, so we’re delighted to have been able to forge this new partnership. It will be great to see and hear first-hand, the results of how our customers’ kind donations will help people in Senegal." The charity focusses on the two fundamental issues in West Africa, health and education, in order to improve the lives of people in this region. To learn more about Formación Senegal, visit their website www.formacionsenegal.org. To donate glasses for this project visit Specsavers Opticas in Jávea or Calpe www.specsavers.es.

I have been a little self indulgent this month by putting my darling granddaughter on the front page. A local photographer was doing 'photo shoots' at a Trade Show in town and as she was wearing her princesses crown it just had to be done! She has just passed her year at school with flying colours so I am one proud 'gwanma'. As always your favourite magazine is bursting with information and this month includes the Summer Special pages to get extra tips and advice on how to enjoy the Summer here. As Summer seems to be definitely here now, once again we all need to remember to add some extra time to our journeys and think about parking. Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids - mainly water if possible! Also look after your furry friends as they suffer with the heat as well. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water and don't take them out in the heat of the day and don't leave them in the car. Sounds obvious doesn't it! One of our dogs spends a lot of time on the top step of the pool blowing bubbles! The other one has to be 'coaxed' in to cool down. They both love it once they have been in though. I am dreading the water bill as our two piggies get through so much water during the Summer as they love their mud baths and hosing down! Wish we could recycle the water on the flowers but they've eaten them all!

MOFTAG celebrates its 40th anniversary On Wednesday 30 May MOFTAG (Mighty Oaks From Tiny acorns Grow) celebrated its 40th anniversary at Pepe’s Restaurant, Alcalali. A total of 45 people attended the celebratory lunch including past and present members with their partners. MOFTAG is the longest running Calpe club and was originally founded by Kathy Whiteside during times when women did not have anywhere to meet socially. She felt there was a need for single and widowed ladies to get together, but pretty soon married ladies were joining in and enjoying the activities. Maureen Cudby, who was one of the founder members and president during the 80s, also attended the lunch. Jenny Godfrey, the existing president has held that position for 25 years and been a member since the beginning! The event was highlighted when Jenny was presented with a beautiful bouquet from Carole Saunders, Councillor for Associations and César Sánchez, the Mayor of Calpe. Carole thanked MOFTAG for the continuing and loyal support to the Calpe food bank, Maite Boronat, the Red Cross and Gargasindi School. Lunch was rounded off with a huge cake and music provided by one of their very own members, Veronica Dunn and her husband Barrie. All the ladies were presented with a red carnation in honour of the ruby anniversary. MOFTAG still meets on a weekly basis and if you would like any information on becoming a member please phone Jenny Godfrey on 639 139 518.

The Pregnancy Countdown It’s only 9 short months until Brexit and like all pregnancies, good planning leads to a successful birth. As an expat, what sort of planning can you do to ensure a happy financial life after March 29th 2019?

Pre-Retirement Expats Ask yourself 2 questions: Firstly, what does my UK state pension look like and am I going to receive the maximum pension aged 67, and what can I do to maximise this? And secondly, have I checked the status of my company and private pensions and what dangers do I face? The sort of things to look for are: • Are you in full control? • Is the work pension at risk – remembering the issues with BHS, Carillion and British Steel? • Is it time to transfer the pension to your own scheme to avoid the 25% tax that will be applied after Brexit? Post Retired Expats Again 2 questions: Firstly, is the exchange rate affecting my UK pension? Secondly, are you sure you draw down all the pensions you’re due? You’d be surprised how many people have pensions they have forgotten about! All Expats Living in Spain Many people are actually paying the wrong tax in the wrong country, and often too much. It often comes down to investments being taxed incorrectly. And then there’s the issue of inheritance tax. Tax laws are complex and the Spanish Modelo 720 can be complex. There are ways to minimise tax legally, so why not find out? This is your Brexit Pregnancy Countdown to ensure you have delivery of investments, pensions, and taxation. Ciudad Patricia's Brand New Building Iris By Amanda Hobbs - Ciudad Patricia Hi, My name is Amanda and I have been working here for 7 years now in the beautiful retirement resort which some people call a village. I am finding myself very busy now with an increased number of enquiries from people who really do not want to move back to the UK under any circumstances. Ciudad Patricia really is the perfect solution moving into your golden years. People often tell me it's lovely, but we will move in a few years time. Why wait when you can move while you can and not when you have to. Our newest building has been built to offer an even greater level of modernity and luxury to our range of retirement apartments. The building has been designed specifically to appeal for those who, quite rightly are looking for something that extra special, more spacious, unique and the perfect home to enjoy life in their retirement years. Now could be the time to come and have a look for yourself to see how lovely they are going to be. We have been selling off plan but now you can see inside the apartments. They are on target to be ready in October 2018. We have even started tiling the floors and shower rooms. We only have 4 now available, one of which is on the top floor. They all have spectacular views of the mountains. They include 2 bedrooms, 2 shower rooms and very modern open plan kitchens. Some of the available apartments even have north and south terraces. We do have a detailed booklet available for those who like to know how we are constructing the building. Why don’t you call me to come and take a look and have a mini tour of all the resort, the beautiful grounds and facilities. Ciudad Patricia really does keep your dream of living in Spain alive. It helps to create new friendships, so you never have to feel alone. The extensive facilities, extra help and emergency doctor really do give you peace of mind when you come and live here and start to enjoy your life. What is an NIE number? The NIE number is an identification number for foreigners (Número de Identificación de Extranjero in Spanish) who aren’t a Spanish citizen. In our own words, it is an identification number that will be assigned to you for legal purposes, but only if you are not a Spanish citizen. Where do I get an NIE number? There are two places where you can obtain a NIE number: • Spanish National Police stations properly assigned to issue NIE numbers. This means that not every single National Police station will offer this service. • Spanish embassy located in your country. The NIE number must be requested: • In person. • Through a legal authorised person (power of attorney). NIE requirements Depending on the police station, the requirements could vary a bit. This may happen from region to region, or between stations within the same region. Generally, the requirements are a combination of official application form, ID, and bank fees. There are three ways Sun Lawyers could assist you with applying for your NIE number: 1. In person, accompanying you. 2. Through Power of Attorney 3. Through our Legal Package service

For points 2 and 3 you won’t need to be present. We’ll handle everything on your behalf How can I use an NIE number? Obtaining a NIE number is a must for the following legal procedures/activities in Spain: • Pay tax • Employment • Register a business • Buy/sell a car • Buy/sell properties • Other legal economic activities. If you need help applying for an NIE or would like us to apply for your NIE number on your behalf. My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I NEVER MADE A CLAIM BEFORE. I understand that making a claim can seem daunting and this is why I always visit my clients and meet them face to face. I can explain the process and I find this reassures them. I come to Spain regularly and so personal visits are not a problem. I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. It is surprising how often, when you start talking about a persons work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. MY BREATHING PROBLEMS ARE NOT TOO BAD. A lot of people I meet are dismissive of their breathing problems and underestimate how they affect their daily lives. Some people I have seen do not realise there is a time limit for bringing claims and so it is important that investigations are started as soon as possible. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.

Does your Spanish investment bond have you tied up in knots? By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. I’m a big believer in investment bonds, and many of my clients here in Spain hold them, in particular Spanish compliant investment bonds created by companies including The Prudential, SEB and Old Mutual.

Investment bonds offer great tax efficiency – as an example, a net return of 7% per annum would actually double your investment over 10 years thanks to the gross roll-up (compound growth) these bonds allow you to benefit from. (As always, returns aren’t guaranteed, and the figures given are for illustration purposes only). Alongside that, if your bond is appropriately advised and designed for you as a resident here in Spain, it will also be fully tax compliant, meaning it is effectively taxed at source, and under most circumstances you won’t have to declare the bond itself on the Modelo 720, or indeed your annual gains or income. Within a bond you can hold a fully diversified portfolio, and if that portfolio is advised through Chorus you will also benefit from our promise that we only use FCA regulated funds, that guarantee no hidden fees or commissions. So, with all these advantages, where can a bond fail to provide what you’d expect as an investor? Firstly, the annual charges. Did you know that you could be paying more for exactly the same bond depending on which firm you sign up through? I’ve seen people commit to annual charges of over 1% a year for as long as 10 years on a bond. That’s an unnecessarily high charge, and if you’d taken that exact same plan through Chorus, you would be paying far less. Secondly, and probably worst of all, there are certain bonds offered here in Spain which not only commit clients to incredibly high charges for a very long period of time, but also have exclusive agreements in place with particular financial advisories. This means if you become dissatisfied with your financial advisor you

could be effectively forced to stay with them or face heavy exit penalties. This really isn’t how the market should operate and would be illegal in the UK. Chorus only use investment bonds that are openly available to all licensed advisors (such as the 3 I mentioned previously), so this means that if we fail to provide the service we’ve promised you, you can simply cancel our ongoing fee and appoint another advisor. For us this is the only fair way for the relationship between an advisor and their client to operate. The final element comes down to the investment funds your advisor uses within your bond. As I’ve been saying for many years here in Spain, the use of commission paying funds is prolific, and can mean your portfolio is loaded with low quality investments and high hidden fees that you may be unaware of for many, many years. A well put together Spanish investment bond can offer so many advantages and can be a fantastic long-term investment solution, but sadly many advisors here in Spain fail to put them together with their client’s needs at the forefront of the advice. Your long-term financial security is simply too important to risk not asking enough questions or signing paperwork until you’re 100% sure you’re getting the best possible deal and the best possible investment advice. Never be afraid to get a second opinion, whether it’s on a new application or an existing plan. If you’d like to discuss anything in this article, please call me direct on 664 398 702 or email s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es. All initial advice is free and without pressure or obligation.

Page 12 www.femalefocusonline.com due to hunger that could not be sated due to the aircraft having little or no food for sale on our much delayed journey to Gatwick ...apparently it was all eaten on the way out due to that delay. Settled in my seat with a bag of crisps and a cup of coffee I look over to see the Mother in law tucking into a ham roll and several biscuits that on last viewing were nestled in my fridge back home in Spain. Tummy rumbling, we land at Gatwick. All the other passengers leave the plane save for me and Mum. I have to wait here she says ...you go on and I will meet you in the Terminal. I exit the plane ...down the front steps and I spot a bus with several elderly people waiting within. My thought was that this must be her transport ...so Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. I decide to wander back out and once again park myself over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s by the plane ...standing under the wing tip in a nice shady spot. over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. At booth number four a nice young lady asks to Mum competition. Oh “How can I help?” “Hello,” says I, “I would like two single tickets and by the way you are - Gatwick to Havant for today and one return Havant to Gatwick for next Wednesday.” She looks at me and says “two singles” going this Saturday!” Saturday arrives and off “yes” I reply ...just in case I ever find my lost Mother in law. That we set to Alicante airport will be forty two pounds please she says to which I announce ...me with a small cabin bag ...the mother in law with a hold bag with confidence “I will pay with my card”. I enter the card in the and a cabin bag full of Mother in law things. On arrival at Alicante payment machine ...enter the Pin number and stand back... “It does Mum decides she does not need assistance at this end as "It is not like that,” says the young ticket lady “give me the card and I only a small airport"...she decides that she will make her way to will type the numbers in on my keyboard.” “Oh dear,” she says” it our boarding gate via several shops and or course the compulsory does not like that either.” “I wonder why I enquire?” “Because the cafe con leche stop or two. We board Easyjet xxxx to Gatwick card is out of date.” says the nice young ticket lady looking at me and, once the initial scrum has subsided inside the cabin, we are and looking over my shoulder at the vast amount of eager ticket informed by the Pilot that due to a take-off delay on the trip out purchasers being held up by an idiot who not only has contrived to from Gatwick we will have a corresponding delay on the trip lose his Mother in law ...but is now trying to purchase train tickets back ...the current delay is one hour and forty minutes. This is with an out of date credit card. Just when things could not get simply because Gatwick has only one runway and sheer numbers any worse Mother in law appears ...in this case it’s Super Mother of aircraft waiting to take off and land nearly always mean that in law ...as she rides to my rescue with a handful of crisp twenty take-off slots are missed resulting in later landing slot follow-on pound notes. Onward we travel, eventually arriving safe and sound delays. Oh no thought I ...what can you do sitting inside an aircraft on beautiful Hayling Island. ...it’s boring at the best of times but sitting on the Alicante tarmac The moral of this story ...always check the expire by date on credit ...no thank you. After what seemed an absolute age (ten minutes cards before you travel, and at all times keep the Mother in law or so) the pilot announced that our delay would now only be 40 close at hand. Whilst I love to travel, if something is going to minutes... sure enough forty minutes later off we went into the happen it always seems to happen to me ...years ago a teacher of wide blue yonder. Little did I know the fun had only just begun. mine said "You Boy...you should not be allowed out on your own." Fill someone’s day with happiness Written by Carer Suzann Roberts I had never worked in the care industry before and thought I’d use the job as a way of touching base with my family in the UK. I started with another company and soon realised that they weren’t for me. Whilst online one day I got an alert about The Good Care Group and thought I would apply. What a difference! The recruiting staff in Spain have been amazing, from my initial Skype interview to the organisation of paperwork and references before being accepted on the course, to the course itself, which I have to say was incredible. It showed just how little the other company had done for me. With an emphasis towards ongoing development this was what I thought being a carer should be about. You became aware that what you were about to do would really make a difference to a person’s wellbeing and that of their family. The company are always there for the carers as well as their clients which is very reassuring as the job can be challenging for various reasons. I have a wonderful client who loves to laugh and boy do we laugh. She says I fill her day with happiness and laugher. So not only is my job a way of keeping up with my family, I now have an extended one which I am loving being part of. For more information about becoming a carer with The Good Care Group, contact Anne Greatrex on 96 571 3746 or 628 343 240 or email anne.greatrex@thegoodcaregroup.com.

“TrustedHousesitters gave me travel freedom” Hilary and Geoff Stokes moved to Spain in 2005 and live near Cartagena where they ran a hairdressing and beauty business until 2016. Passionate animal lovers, the couple have their own cats and also care for cats living in the area. Hilary has a combined membership with TrustedHousesitters which means that she has sitters for her own pets and goes on house sits to look after other pets, she explains, “We decided to become sitters when we retired because we needed to watch our pennies! It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to house sit and look after pets, we can travel without restriction and we can go to areas and countries we want to see. We look for sits in Spain because we can drive there." Hilary continues, “Through housesitting we have met so many lovely people, even if you are not chosen for a sit, you still have contact with great people." When Hilary and Geoff go house sitting, they find sitters to look after their beloved cats. It’s very important to them that their cats are kept in the best possible place (home), looked after by the best people and Hilary says, “It’s up to me to find the right people. I’I write a check-list and brainstorm what I want from my sitter. I divide up my needs into things I must have, would like to have and blue sky wishes.” Hilary’s approach has worked very well for her and she has used TrustedHousesitters to find sitters each time she and Geoff have gone away to house sit themselves. TrustedHousesitters owners and sitters never exchange money their pet care pact is based purely on a shared love of animals and travel. The only payment is an annual membership fee of €89 a year, which helps the like-minded members connect in a safe and secure way. Skin changes, moles ....and melanoma A melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer, which originates in the melanocytes or pigment cells and can be fatal when it spreads to other parts of the body. In the last decade the number of patients with malignant melanoma in Europe has increased enormously. The good news is that most melanomas can be cured when they are removed in an early stage and most can even be prevented when we check our moles regularly. Your dermatologist can nowadays make a more accurate diagnosis with advanced dermatoscopy. How does a melanoma develop? Moles are brown or black colored spots or elevations of the skin, which are formed by pigment cells. They can be congenital but arise especially in childhood and puberty. A new mole that develops after puberty should always be monitored. Approximately 40% of melanomas develop in an existing mole. The colour is mostly brown or black, but they can also have pink, red, blue or white tints. Do I have an increased risk for Melanoma? ● Somebody in the family with melanoma ● A personal history of melanoma ● A high number of moles ● Irregular moles ● Light skin type and /or blue or green eyes ● Sunburns in childhood and after ● Outdoor activities What should I pay attention to? It is important that you get to know your own body. Melanomas can develop over the entire skin so you have to look from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet, including mouth, nose and genitalia. To assess whether a mole is suspect, we use the American ABCD rule. The A (Asymmetry) for irregular shape, the B (Border) for irregular edge, the C (Colour) for an irregular or very dark colour and the D (Diameter) for a diameter larger than 5mm. Finally, the E (Evolution) is added. Moles that change shape, colour or size are in principle suspect as well as new moles.

Dermatoscopic examination by the dermatologist Although a good self-examination is a useful first step, it is sometimes very difficult to distinguish a melanoma from a mole or other pigmentation spots. Your dermatologist can make a more accurate diagnosis with a dermatoscope, a kind of microscopic instrument. When in doubt, a tissue examination is always necessary. How are melanomas and suspicious moles treated? Suspected moles or melanomas are always removed surgically. Subsequently, it is sent to the pathologist for histologic examination, which confirms both the diagnosis and if the melanoma is completely removed. Usually in cases of a melanoma a re-excision is performed to create a safety margin in combination with further examinations to exclude metastases. Remember that a mole is principally an innocent and often asymptomatic spot, but a melanoma can be fatal. In any doubt check it out and show it to your dermatologist. As we are all aware, now more than ever before, it is time to take action and CLEAN UP our beaches, bays, roadsides, urbanisations etc. We are slowly destroying our marine life with OUR rubbish, especially plastic, that ends up in our seas. Two of my favourite passions in life are fund raising for Spread some Sunshine – a project to provide food and support the well being of children in care in Sri Lanka and joining the Plastic Patrol on their regular beach cleans. TELITEC and Infinity International have kindly agreed to sponsor a fund raising clean up day here in Jávea on 5 September. Ulthera Plus, The Non-Surgical Facelift Are you looking for a non-surgical treatment to tackle the signs of ageing? Are you concerned about drooping jowls, prominent nose to mouth lines or a heavy brow? Our non-surgical face lift treatment using the latest Ulthera Plus ultrasound technology could be the perfect treatment for you. As we age collagen production slows down. Our face, neck and décolletage start to lose tone and elasticity and we often notice our skin starts to sag. This can cause particular concern around the jawline or jowls, the neck and brow area; ageing us beyond our years. It is the latest non-surgical, clinically proven technology, for lifting and tightening the face, eyes, neck, décolletage, knees, arms and tummy. During an Ulthera Plus face lift treatment, the practitioner delivers ultrasound energy deep into the structural layers of the skin. The heat energy is delivered at temperatures between 65ºC and 70ºC, targeting the different layers of the skin using transducers at 4.5mm, 3mm and 1.5mm thus including the SMAS, deep dermis and epidermis. As the sound waves bypass the surface of the skin, they rapidly heat the dermal and sub-dermal tissue, causing a low-level injury to the tissue. In the process of ‘healing’ itself, the tissue stimulates the production and organisation of collagen fibres, which in turn leads to the long term tightening and lifting of the skin in the treated area. The creation of new collagen is a key part of helping the skin to maintain its youthful appearance. This precision targeting is unique to Ulthera Plus treatments. Other non-surgical skin tightening treatments (such as radiofrequency, e.g. Thermage) are unable to target the specific tissues in this way. Non-medical Ulthera treatments do not have the different transducers to deliver the ultrasounds at the appropriate depths and energy levels. The new Ulthera Plus is able to reach tissues that other anti-ageing treatments can’t affect. This makes Ulthera Plus a very popular alternative to surgery or more invasive treatments. Zeera Chawal Cumin Rice Rice is a staple, versatile food eaten by millions on a daily basis across the globe. With more than 40.000 varieties; rice is one of the oldest grains thought to have originated at least 130 million years ago as wild grass. We are terrible rice snobs and for Indian cooking only use long grain Basmati white or brown rice. There is nothing like the distinctive nutty taste and the fragrant aroma you only get with Basmati rice. Known as the Prince of Rice it is grown in designated areas in the foothills of the Himalayas. There are many ways to cook rice, but we find the absorption method is the best. Ratio - 1 part rice to 2 parts water. To get good results every time, wash the rice in cold water until it runs clear. When ready to serve, fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains. Ingredients 2 cups Basmati rice 1 small onion finely chopped 3 tablespoon sunflower oil 2 teaspoons cumin seeds 1 teaspoon ground pepper 1 teaspoon garam masala 1 teaspoon salt 4 cups water Time: 25 minutes Serves: 4-6 Recipe Measure the dry rice into a jug or small bowl. To get rid of the starch; rinse the rice really well with cold water. Wash until the water runs clear. Drain well. In a large saucepan heat the oil until it is medium hot, add the cumin seeds. Once the seeds begin to crack and turn a light brown colour; add the onions and cook for 5 minutes until the onions turn a golden colour. To the onions add salt, garam masala and ground pepper, cook for a further 1 minute. Add the water, stir, bring to the boil, turn the heat all the way down and cover the pan tightly with a lid. Cook on the lowest heat possible for 8 to 10 minutes with the lid on. Take it off the heat and check to see if the rice is cooked; the grains will have swelled in size, fluffy, soft individual grains is the aim. If the grains are still hard, put back on the heat, cover and cook for a further couple of minutes. Once cooked, fluff up the rice using a fork. Decant the rice to a serving dish/platter or tray. TIP: Try not to over stir the rice during the cooking process. If you don’t have the spices why not use our newest Biryani Rice Kit instead - launched this month along with Pakora Spice – available from www.curryoncooking.com. What to do if someone is stung by a Jellyfish Jellyfish live close to the surface of the water, and at this time of year strong onshore winds bring the surface water close to the shore, and with it often come the jellyfish. They certainly are a bit of an odd beast. They're not even a fish, they are a type of plankton, and they are made up of 98% water. They have no bones, no heart, and technically no brain. And yet they have been around for 650 million years and there are thousands of different species, so clearly they are doing something right!

So what should we do if we, or someone else is stung? "Pee on the sting!" is the usual answer everyone shouts, but in truth peeing on a jellyfish sting will not make it any less painful. So if a friend offers to help you can kindly tell them 'thanks but no thanks'.

Jellyfish use their sting to capture prey and to act as a defence mechanism. When their tentacles encounter a human or other sort of prey they reach out and fire out harpoon-like structures containing a neurotoxic venom. It will paralyse their prey, but in the case of us lowly humans it will just really hurt with an intense pain where you're stung and give an itchy rash afterwards. Some jellyfish and Portuguese man-of-war stings can also cause raised circular areas on the skin (welts).

What to do if you've been stung Get help if possible from a lifeguard or someone with first aid training; most stings are not serious and can be treated with first aid. But sometimes you may need to go to hospital (see below). If help is not available: Do • rinse the affected area with seawater (not fresh water) • remove any spines from the skin using tweezers or the edge of a bank card • soak the area in very warm water (as hot as can be tolerated) for at least 30 minutes – use hot flannels or towels if you can't soak it • take painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen Don't - use vinegar • apply ice or a cold pack • touch any spines with your bare hands • cover or close the wound • pee on the sting (no matter how much your friend wants to!) Most stings will subdue within half an hour or so, but the itchy rash may last a day or two. Go to a doctor if you have severe pain that isn't going away or been stung on your face or genitals. Hospital treatment Very occasionally jellyfish stings do cause a situation where hospital treatment is needed. Go to A&E, or call 112 for an ambulance, or if you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea then call our 24hr emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-of-the-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and on its way to you if you've been stung and have any of the following: • Difficulty breathing • Chest pain • Fits or seizures • Severe swelling around the affected area • Severe bleeding • Vomiting • Light-headedness or loss of consciousness Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. Call their Registration Manager Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (10am to 1pm every weekday). Email: amigos_europeos@yahoo.es.

Deciphering the Sunscreen lotion terminology…

As well as being an International Master in Cosmetic Surgery, Dr Poole is also a GP, and having had his clinic here in Jávea for many years, he knows a thing or two about the need for protection from the sun. Even on one of the cloudiest days, the sun’s rays will still be present. This means you’re being exposed to damaging UVA and UVB rays and you’re at greater risk of developing skin cancer or experiencing premature ageing, including wrinkles, dark spots and fine lines. So to avoid all this, slap on some sunscreen before you head out the door, ideally every day. UVA and UVB rays UV rays are what cause the damage and are the ones you need to protect your skin from, with both types being linked to skin cancer. Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are responsible for skin reddening and sunburn. They are also the main culprit for skin cancer but also cause tanning and premature ageing. UVB rays vary in strength depending on location, the time of day and the time of year. Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays penetrate deeper into your skin and are also responsible for tanning. They also cause premature ageing such as wrinkles. UVA rays are normally fairly consistent all year round and at any time of the day. “So this is the first conclusion” says Dr Poole “When buying sunscreen you want to select a BROAD SPECTRUM version, which protects you against BOTH types of UV rays.” What does SPF mean? Sun protection factor (SPF) measures the amount of protection you’ll receive from the sun’s UVB rays. Rated on a scale from 2 to 50+ (the higher the number, the stronger the protection), it tells you how much longer your skin will take to turn red in response to UVB compared to if you weren’t using any protection.

For example, if you normally burn after 30 minutes without sunscreen, an SPF 30 will protect you for 30 times longer, which is 15 hours. “So this is the next recommendation” says Dr Poole “Most people should be using a sunscreen with a MINIMUM SPF OF 30”. How good is your sunscreen? Sunscreens are also rated for their level of UVA protection. When you see “UVA” inside a circle, it’s confirming the UVA protection you’ve bought is at least one third of the SPF value and therefore meets EU recommendations. Some products may display a star rating instead, which is also a measure of the amount of protection you receive from UVA radiation. The rating is from one to five stars, where more stars mean more protection. This system requires a higher minimum level of protection than the EU recommendations. Sunscreen shelf life Thinking about using up the sunscreen in the back of the cupboard? Don’t. “Most bottles last 12 to 18 months but if they’ve been exposed to a high temperatures or direct sunlight, this will be reduced. If it has been a while since you bought it or you can’t remember when you did, IT’S BETTER TO BUY NEW” says Dr Poole. Visit Clinica El Arenal. Tips and tricks to keep your aircon working by K&M Aircon It’s getting hot and you need to be able to rely on your airconditioning to keep you cool. At K&M we get busy for summer and are always on hand should you need new aircon, or a repair. However, when it comes to repairs, we see again and again that a little self help can go a long way. Here are our 5 top tips… 1. Most people set the aircon to 16º thinking they will cool down quicker. It simply isn’t true and what’s more, you're doing damage to the system. The correct way is to set the temperature to where you want and let the system get there. If 21º is good for you, then set the system to 21º and leave it. 2. We live in Spain where water is scarce, so think about the waste water. Why not collect it and water the plants? In fact, the water is perfect for your iron because when it comes through the system, it is in fact distilled. 3. If you want to keep your air conditioner working at optimum, then clean the filters regularly. It's easy to do, takes 5 minutes and can make a world of difference. 4. Getting your system serviced by K&M once in a while is always good advice. We offer a maintenance service to take care of this. By doing regular maintenance, just once a year is enough, you’ll extend the working life of your system significantly. Imagine how you’ll feel when it’s the hottest day so far and your aircon fails. 5. If you think your old system is getting past it, think again! Along with a maintenance call, Aircon K&M can re-gas your system and have it performing like it was installed yesterday. We often see units which are 10 or 15 years old and a simple re-gas has kept the customer cool, and saves the bank account. If at the end of the day you want a new system, we offer all leading makes and models, at competitive prices with fast installation. We’re based in Calpe and you can contact us by calling 96 587 4838.

Say “Fog Off” to Mosquito Bites Is it me or are the mosquitoes getting worse? We normally get a break from the bites during winter, but for many it seems that winter never happened. And with Summer here, the dreaded mozzies are also here. Typical scenario: you have a beautiful villa, lovely garden, but are imprisoned indoors behind the mosquiteras. What if you could somehow treat the garden to make it a no-fly zone for mosquitoes and other bugs. Well that's exactly what FOG OFF provide. Using their proprietary misting method, they ‘spray’ a solution that sticks to the underside of foliage creating a no-fly protection for 28 days. It eliminates mosquitoes and also inhibits further reproduction, an anti-mosquito double-whammy! And it's safe, being 100% biodegradable and leaves no active residues. Treatment is simple. The FogOff team shows up, mists the garden and if necessary any specific standing water areas, downpipes areas etc, to clear them of dormant larvae and adult mosquitoes. New for this year is a revolutionary washing/ laundry additive. Simply add 10ml of liquid to your wash and the very clothes you wear will act as a mosquito repellent. Its invisible nano-particles stick to clothing, bed linen, etc for 20 washes. Again, it's perfectly safe and if you want a testimonial, well it's already in use in Africa to combat Malaria, and is also used by the military. You can buy directly from Fog Off via their website! So don't let the mozzies win, tell them to “Fog Off” and enjoy your Summers, bite free. Visit their website www.fogoffspain.com or call/ whatsapp 681 609 730.

Hurrah, they'r but where have our Common opinion based on some historical facts put the origin of these characteristic beach stands in Cuba. According to the story, in the 19th century, cane sugar plantation workers stopped to have a coffee, but since they were far from the days of electric coffee makers, they would fill a stocking with coffee grounds and press it until they got enough juice to prepare it. This juice was called “chiringo” and later it was given the nickname “chiringuito.” And from there, the phrase, “let’s go to the chiringuito” was born. Later, snack stands or bars that were made quickly or with cane and leaves were also called chiringuitos, both because of how they were built and because they were a place to rest in the shade, to escape from the blazing Caribbean sun. The name took a while to arrive to Spain from there. It wasn’t until 1913 that the term chiringuito was used to refer to one of these types of bars on the beach in Sitges. The chiringuito has evolved continuously since then. As a retreat from the hot beach, and because of clients’ tastes, it wasn’t long before chiringuitos began serving a whole series of dishes, most of them very tasty.

re back now, Chiringuitos been? Soon afterwards drinks began to be the main players at chiringuitos. This began with cold kegs of beer and red wine. Later, cocktails and mixed drinks started to become available including gin and tonics, whisky on the rocks and other similar drinks… until the arrival of the mojito. Spain was thrilled and now, there isn’t a chiringuito that doesn’t serve this delicious tropical drink. But this year in Jávea, due to 'high level licensing issues' there has been a distinct absence of these beach bars. Thankfully the issues are all resolved now, and the chiringuitos are back in place where they should be, which is only right and proper since the Jávea chiringuitos are among some of the most sophisticated and stylish on the entire Costa Blanca. So go and enjoy, and whilst you are there, think back to those humble beginnings in Cuba, and enjoy the unique experience of our local chiringuitos!

Summer Hair Care Tips Summer can be a stressful time for your hair, ultraviolet rays of the sun actually can cause significant damage to the hair shaft. The damage is most obvious when we see colour-treated hair becoming faded, bleached, and brassy. Even hair that isn't coloured will suffer from sun-induced stress. UV rays dry out hair and roughen the normally smooth cuticle (or outer layer, of the hair shaft). Swimming beats up your hair too, chlorine can strip your hair of its natural protective oils. A dip in the ocean stresses hair due to the heavy salt content in seawater which draws water out of your hair and skin. Tips for caring for your hair in the summer: v Start with a trim: It’s a good idea to remove split ends and refresh your style. Hair grows faster in the summer so you may need another cut mid-season. v Ditch the hot tools: As often as possible give your hair a break from blow dryers, flat irons, etc. opt for a more beachy casual look to reduce the stress on your hair. v Protect your locks: Make a daily habit of applying a hair care product that contains UV filters to help protect your hair. If you'll be spending lots of time outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat, it not only stops your hair from getting scorched it will protect your scalp and ears, areas that are vulnerable to skin cancer. v Beat the frizz: Summer humidity can play havoc with your hair so use anti frizz oil or serums and go for a high bun, pony tail or braid to avoid the battle with the frizz. v Saturate your hair before taking a dip: If your hair is drenched with clean water or leave-in conditioner; it won't absorb as much saltwater or pool chemicals. It's also recommended to rinse your hair after a swim. v Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner:. If you wash your hair more in the summer due to sweating and swimming ensure you are using moisturising product and regular deep conditioning treatments. One product we highly recommend is “Wonder 10”. It is a unique all in one Keratin based spray-in treatment with 10 wondrous effects, some of which are; to help repair dry and damaged hair, smooth split ends and control frizz, it contains a colour protection complex, it’s an incredible de-tangler and so much more…... Pop into KRU and pick up your bottle which is on offer for €14.90. Find the salon on the Avenida del Pla in Jávea near Lidl or call 96 646 3970, or see our advert on page 40.

XIV Medieval Market in La Nucia - 6, 7 and 8 July La Nucía returns once again to the Middle Ages to celebrate its 313th birthday; on the 9th of July in the Year of our Lord 1705 an official document was signed that established La Nucia as an independent settlement. Instead of a huge cake with far too many candles, the town has decided to celebrate the event every year with a Medieval Market. For the fourteenth year running, the streets between the square in front of the Town Hall down to the old "lavadero" (where the women of the village used to wash their clothing) will be decorated with flags and bunting and lined with stalls to create a medieval setting. La Nucia Town Hall has once more asked Amata to organise the event. Amata, the regional association interested in maintaining and improving craft standards, will make sure that what is sold on the 70 stalls is of good quality and made by the craftsman or craftswoman on the stall. Nothing from factories, nothing imported - it's all original, which is why Amata uses the slogan "Artesanía de Autor®". The Market will not just consist of some stalls in medieval style with stallholders dressed as medieval merchants, there is also a very active programme of live medieval music, street theatre and jugglers who close the market every evening with a fire show. This year a group of knights and their ladies will set up a small "campamento" and give us an idea of military life in medieval times. The knights will fight, they will parade through the market, and will even invite the public to learn the first steps of some medieval dances. And the falconer will be there again with his birds of prey. Female Focus July 2018

Besides theatre and music, you can watch several craftsmen and woman at work: the blacksmith, two potters (who let you have a go at making your own little bowl) and a paper maker. In fact, the people in this market not only sell original work, but many of them can add an extra touch on the spot, or take orders for some special design. After all, these are craftsmen and women - and you can help them keep their craft alive. After wandering around the market, visitors can restore their ‘tissues’ with a beer or roast meat at the medieval tavern, a glass of tea in the Arab tea tent or try out traditional boiled "pulpo" (octopus) served with potatoes on wooden platters. Other stalls sell cheese, pressed fig bread and sausages made to medieval recipes and there is even a baker selling bread straight from his wood-fired oven. The children can visit a small animal farm, have a ride on a pony or a medieval merry-go-round, or play table games in the medieval ludoteca. The market in La Nucia will be open on Friday 6, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July from 6 pm and will go on until midnight (or perhaps a little later). For more information ring 639 979 678 (in English) or to see photographs of last year's market look at http://www.amata.es/LaNucia%2017.html.

Summer trends Well, after what seemed like a slow start, summer is most definitely with us now and the cold winter nights have become a distant memory yet again. And here at Lotus Interiors it’s time to revel in this year’s summer inspired fabrics and bring colour and frivolous design into our clients’ homes. The trends this year are for bright and bold with botanical designs still being a hot favourite amongst our suppliers. We particularly like the new Zapara range from Harlequin, inspired by fashion and a love of all things eclectic yet sophisticated. The range of fabrics include striking printed fabrics, weaves and a voile and embodies the beauty of the Amazon with bright jewel colours and soft greens, a must for anyone wanting to add a splash of colour to their home. But if colour is not your thing then the latest subtle designs from Ashley Wilde may be more to your taste. The Azalea collection is particularly beautiful with a delicate embroidered floral design teamed with on trend geometrics and fanciful voile in beautiful colours based on a soft grey background. Stunning for any room in your villa, or to add a delicate beauty in a range of new cushions. If floral design takes your fancy then the old favourites are still available in abundance from traditional chintz in Mediterranean colours to bold digitally printed designs that look fabulous in covered nayas and serve to bring the outside in. Mix fabrics on cushions and add striking design with dress curtains at your windows to frame your view and outside space. So if you are sitting in your naya as the hot summer months finally kick in, look around to see if some of these bright designs would add some extra energy and pizzazz. Pop into the studio to see the real impact of these fabrics or simply give us a call to arrange your free home visit and see for yourself the difference adding a bit of colour will make! We look forward to hearing from you soon!

How to Save Water During the Summer Summer gets hot, so it is no surprise that our water consumption increases during this time of year, every year. Outdoor summer fun, gardening, tree care, car washes, laundry, dishes, and more, are just a few examples of activities that call for more water use on a daily basis. But is there a way to still enjoy the summer and stay cool while managing your water consumption? The answer is yes! With a few simply adjustment to everyday habits, all homes and families can save money on water and energy bills, while lowering their water consumption all at once! Continue reading for tips to saving water this summer. Summertime Water Conservation Tips First, check out the water heater. Is it time to have it serviced by a professional plumber? This should be done at least twice per year to ensure that your water heater is in optimal condition and performs up to standards without wasting energy. If you don't want to waste water or energy, tune-up or replace your existing water heater. Now, here are some additional summertime water conservation tips for the everyday homeowner: Dishwashers and Washing Machines It is so easy to just load and go with a dishwasher and washing machine! But there are ways to reduce your use. First, try to only run full loads. This will reduce the number of times you operate your machine on a weekly basis. Also, try to hand clean larger items like mixing bowls and colanders. These are easy to wash and rinse and take up too much valuable space in the dishwasher. Garden Care Automatic sprinkler systems are certainly a wonderful asset for lawn and garden care. Simply adjusting an automated sprinkler system by shaving off a few minutes of each cycle can dramatically decrease your monthly water consumption. For manual sprinklers, be sure they are placed in an area where they are not watering anything but flora. Do not let them waste water on driveways and also turn the water off a few minutes earlier to save water. Aside from sprinkler adjustments, there are other ways to conserve water in the summer when it comes to lawns and gardens. For one, always water flowers and lawns in the early morning before the sun rises and temperatures peak. This reduces the rate of evaporation in the hot sun and keeps soil moist for longer. This way you don't have to water and repeat on a daily basis, wasting water! Second, buy a rain barrel and collect rain water to reuse and water your gardens. This saves litres of water each year per home! And last, adjust the lawnmower so that it cuts the grass at a higher level. This makes the roots stay moist longer, thus reducing the need to water! Fix any leaks Not only will repairing water leak issues save water, it will prevent problems from turning into costly nightmares. A small leak can turn into a large repair very quickly. Gardener or Landscaper? Often, I will refer to myself as ‘Lee the gardener’ to many people as it reminds them instantly who they are talking to down the telephone. But my best description is Garden Designer and Landscaper.

www.charlesworthgardens.com

I know this is something that makes people a little perplexed as they may think well what’s the difference, but as with many trades there are multiple sections within the gardening industry. As regards garden work, yes, we do it and are very good at it, but we don’t tend to make a lot of time for it as we are too busy creating gardens. This is what a landscaper does. My company specialises in creating gardens in the first place. This may be as a new project or a makeover, with all the work beginning with a design, this then goes into the pricing of the project and then the construction of the garden area. I find sometimes it’s easier to think of us as specialist builders for your garden with the architectural bit built in at the beginning. Now some people may question if there is a difference between a landscaper and a builder and the answer is an extremely big yes. Landscaping is a totally different area and type of build work and as much as there are similarities, there are many big differences involved. Having worked with many builders within the area, I have often found that most of them struggle to grasp the 3-dimensional aspect of dealing with a garden and the importance of understanding the levels within the space, which is a crucial aspect of the design and feel of the whole garden space. Therefore, we offer our services to builders and their customers to act as a third party to oversee the project and make sure the gardens are built to follow the design, and if any changes need to be made, they are done so without compromising the design.

The whole point of a landscaper is to create a landscape, or in its smaller version a garden, and to deal with every detailed part of it. Therefore, good landscapers must be capable of understanding and being able to undertake all areas of general building works, wood working, water features, basic electrical principles, irrigation systems and a whole list of other specialist subjects. Now don’t get me wrong we are not jacks of all trades, so we do often use other professionals to do the difficult and specialist parts of projects, such as electrical work for obvious safety reasons, metal work, or the moving of pool pumps. But good landscapers have to be very good at a multitude of tasks.

www.femalefocusonline.com

Page 35 It is very difficult to explain to people exactly the work we do undertake, so often when I am showing people pictures of our work they are surprised at the amount and the variety of what we do create.

FF - House & Home

This is why I like referring to our pictures and enjoy telling people, “All the pictures you see from Charlesworth Gardens are our work, all of it”. We don’t use pictures taken from other sources. The best way to think about it is, we will build anything you see and use within a garden, and even if it is something we can’t make, such as stunning modern garden furniture, then we will have / or know a supplier for you to visit to complete your amazing new garden. But part of our job is to offer our customers the best service, best materials available (many of which are supplied from us), a vast choice of plants to suit all budgets, the best range of artificial grass, and finally a quality all round service and finish. A gardener normally maintains a garden and offers advice on planting, a landscaper is the person who makes the magic happen in the first place. So, if you would like us to come and put some magic back into your garden, come and speak to the Costa Blanca’s leading garden design and landscaping specialist. Charlesworth Gardens.

Childproofing your home for visiting children No home can be completely "childproof," but there are simple ways to greatly reduce the risk of harm to children. While all of these ideas can help, nothing replaces constant adult supervision. Take a few minutes to check for some of the most common sources of injury: Secure Household Poisons Know your poison. Toxins and household cleaners are not the only source of poison in your home; common household products like perfumes, hair care products and nail polish remover are also poisonous and a great risk to small children. Installing safety latches on cupboards and drawers in reach of a child is the best way of keeping them safe from harm. Keep Medications Out of The Child's Reach. • Where possible use child proof caps on all medications. • Dispose of outdated medication safely. • Always keep medicine in its original container. • Don't call medicine "candy" or tell children it tastes good. Guard Against Burns and Fire Hazards • Scalding from hot liquids or steam cause more burns than fire in young children. Use the back burners on your stove and never let handles be in reach. Don't leave the stove or candles unattended or hold a baby while cooking or handling hot pots. • Use temperature controls on water heaters to prevent accidental burns from hot water. Minimise the Risk of Injuries • Install gates at the top of stairs. • Insert socket protectors to help prevent electrocution. • Don't leave cords for kitchen or bathroom appliances dangling where a child can pull on them. • Remove glass-top tables and use guards on sharp corners and edges of furniture. • Remove or replace cord for blinds or curtains, or cut them in half, as they may cause strangulation. • Secure heavy furniture that could topple. Drowning • Have a locked fence around pools, and never leave a bathtub that has water in it unattended. • An open toilet or cleaning bucket with just a few inches of water can be equally dangerous if a child tumbles in.

our ARIES Your head and your heart are tearing you in two different directions and you will need some advice to sort this one out. Decisions are not coming easily at the moment so try and take a back seat and let others take charge of things for a while. TAURUS If something seems too good to be true then it probably is. Check the small print before you get yourself into something you may regret later on. Look at alternatives and then you can choose the best option. GEMINI You are all fired up but with no real direction or plan. This will leave you feeling very frustrated so find something to do or all this energy will be wasted. CANCER Don't feel guilty for someone else's misinterpretation of what happened. If they cannot be detached enough to see things objectively then it is their fault, not yours. They will come round eventually, in the meantime carry on without beating yourself up about it. LEO Your diary is really filling up for the coming months and you are maybe getting more excited about one event than you should be. Not everyone is going to see it with as much enthusiasm as you do! VIRGO You feel like the world is against you and that nothing you do is good enough. Instead of thinking it is all your fault, look at them. It may be that they are just asking too much of you.

oroscope LIBRA Things are getting out of hand but the art of delegation does not come easy to you as you like to have more control over things. Before there is a complete loss of control start putting a bit more trust in others. SCORPIO DIY jobs are piling up and the to do list is getting longer and it is getting you down. Once you get started you will be surprised how quickly things get ticked off the list and the sense of achievement you have been missing will return. SAGITTARIUS Spend wisely and keep a back up fund as this summer could end up being more expensive than you think. Give someone time to cool down before you meet with them otherwise you will just end up with more misunderstandings. CAPRICORN Explaining something more than once is necessary at the moment as everyone seems to be getting a different message from the same instructions. Getting everyone together may be easier. AQUARIUS You are eager to get out there and enjoy life to the full. The fact that someone is telling you to be careful and slow down only means they care about you, they are not trying to ruin your fun. PISCES A friend needs you to be there for them more than they will let on. Although you are busy yourself, make time for them as they would for you. Just showing them how much you care and are there for them may be all the support they need.

Cava, Cake & Song Valley Voices next concert is at the Citrus bar in Orba on Sunday 9 September. We repeat the very popular “Cava, Cake & Song” format from 4.30pm that afternoon.

Female Focus July 2018

Tickets costing just 8€ can be bought from Citrus Bar, or by contacting Jennie on 96 648 0062 or emailing valleyvoiceschoircb@gmail.com. Valley Voices entertained over 100 people as they picniced in The Lavender Gardens, Jalón, celebrating the Queen's birthday with a variety of international songs, despite British-style unpredictable weather; with our irrepressible MC, the very entertaining Ian Bennett, convincing the audience that we were tempting the elements with ”Singing in the Rain”, and such lyrics as “curtains you can roll right down in case there’s a change in a weather”, and “When you walk through a storm”! Having entertained the residents in the open courtyard of hospital Fontilles earlier in the week, with a shower and thunder adding to the applause, we'll be carefully checking lyrics as well as melodies for our new season's repertoire! Our indefatigable president, Jennie Tollan, donned crown and sash to direct the crowd with Union Jacks in a closing medley of rousing patriotic songs and the lucky raffle winners continued the regal theme, wearing their own crowns which displayed their prizes! We would like to thank The Black Apple, Jalon, Casa Solar Albir, and Victoria’s Restaurant, Parcent for donating prizes and our MC, who generously donated his fee into the funds Valley Voices raised for needful things for the children of El Preventorio, Gandia. We return to rehearsals on the last Monday in August in Alcalali, and always welcome people who would like to add their voices to this fun and friendly mixed choir.

Moraira-Teulada U3A First Aid Course Fifteen members of Moraira-Teulada U3A attended a First Aid Course recently at Sol Park Tennis, Moraira. The course was organised by Buster Smith, the Managing Director of EFR Training in the U.K., Spain and Europe. EFR is an abbreviation for Emergency First Response Training. This basic life support course deals with heart related life-threatening emergencies in adults, children and infants. The group received instruction of CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), AED use (Automated External Defibrillator) and choking. The course taught the critical basics and was very interesting, fun and hands on. Following the theoretical information, the group were then able to re-enact the principles involved. This 4-hour course was invaluable and made the U3A members more confident in the event of encountering an emergency situation. Following the course, everyone will receive a First Aid Certificate, which is valid for 2 years, together with a full colour instruction manual. The group thanked Buster for an excellent presentation and valued instruction.

U3A Vall del Pop: Walking Groups We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful walking area, and Paul Leniston, our Group Leader, has had the challenging task of selecting two walks each week to keep his Monday and Thursday walkers happy. The photo is from their walk around Bernia, which shows some of that beautiful countryside. They also had a very enjoyable Summer group meal which was enjoyed so much that Paul has been asked to organise a monthly get together for July, August and September, in order to keep in touch during the long summer break. They will start walking again in October, and still have vacancies on both the Monday and Thursday groups. You never know the monthly group meals may also continue next Autumn – making hill walking even more interesting! For further information check the U3A Vall del Pop website http://u3avalldelpop.com.

Teulada Moraira Saludable – Healthy Teulada Moraira This is the sixth edition of this campaign including sports and leisure activities on the municipal beaches.

Teulada Moraira's offer “Healthy Teulada Moraira” is on again. The municipality organises the campaign with the goal to offer healthy activities on the municipal beaches, increase the offer for the summer guests and maintain a permanent activity on the beach. Activities are as follows: Tai-Chi, Pilates, swimming, water gym. All activities, except swimming which starts on 2 July, start on 25 June from Monday to Saturday from 8am to 9am and from 9am to 10am. All activities are free of charge and will take place all summer long until 15 September. The councilor, Mario Font, said that the municipality decided to continue offering activities for yet another year because of the great response during the last couple of years and the importance to have activities on the beaches which take place regularly for citizens as well as for visitors. For more information visit the town hall or www.teuladamoraira.org.

Calpe U3A Day Trip to Cullera Castle and the Albufera

On Wednesday 6 June 38 members of Calpe U3A set off at 9.15am in fine weather for our first stop which was Cullera Castle and Church. We were given a short talk about the history of the 10th century Castle and 15th Century Church; translated by Crista. After a short drive along the sandy shore we arrived at La Palmar Resturante where we were well fed and watered with a traditional lunch of tapas followed by chicken Paella. When we set off for the short walk to the boat trip on the lake; the sky was getting grey! 20 of us boarded the open boat and set off in good spirits. Someone shouted “it is spitting rain” followed by a clap of thunder! The boat man cut the trip short but the folk who had left their wet weather gear on the coach got soaked. A chorus of “Singing in the rain” echoed across the still waters. Everyone took it in good spirits and overall enjoyed the day out. A big thank you to the travel team, Kerry, Freda, and Crista. If you would like to join our merry band check our Facebook page and website www.u3acalpe.org.

End of an era is a dry affair!

The latest meeting of Jávea U3A’s History Group was a truly historic occasion!

It was the final presentation by long-term leader Peter Atkinson before he hands over the reins to new leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie. Peter has led the group for the last seven years after taking over from founder member Sally Wells, who launched it in 2005. Interestingly, the first talk under Sally was given by new joint-leader Angela Chantry. Since its launch, there have been 68 meetings of the group with 19 different speakers. Peter’s last talk as leader was entitled ‘Prohibition, 1920-1933: The Law of Unintended Consequences in Action’ – an account of the 14-year ban on the production and consumption of liquor in the USA. As usual, his presentation was both informative and amusing, and received a hearty round of applause from his audience at the Casa del Cultura in Jávea Old Town. The meeting finished with a presentation of a special farewell gift from incoming leaders Angela and Tony. Female Focus July 2018

TOP TIPS TO GET READY FOR A VIEWING

By Martin Ducos / Garcia Villas Jalón

At Garcia Villas, the key part of our job is accompanying buyers when they view prospective properties to buy. People make their mind up whether the property is NOT for them in the first few moments, often before they've even gone through the front door. At the same time, we get asked all the time "what do I need to do to get my house ready when being viewed". We're in a unique position to offer a few quick tips to make your property have instant appeal. There are 2 types of things you can do. There are the ones that might require investing some money. But there are also quite a few things to focus on, which take a bit of thought, maybe an hour or so, and cost very little. So let's take a look...

1 - Clear the kitchen of all those personal counter top things such as bread boards, tray, toasters and even kettles. It helps prospective buyer envisage how their personal items - their trays, kettles and toasters will look in the kitchen. And of course, it’s a little less clutter letting the house shine through. 2 - Talking of clutter, we can't emphasise this enough - clear out your clutter. Remember that if you've decided to move, then start storing all those things that you don't need on a day to day basis, and get on with items to be recycled, donated to charity or just plain thrown away! 3 - Replace light bulbs with brighter ones. Now we're not saying install floodlights everywhere, but the ambient light in Spain is bright and fresh, by making sure those darker corners of your home match. This takes away the feeling of the walls closing in, and brighter rooms give brighter and more positive feelings.

4 - An old trick used to be to bake something such as bread to cake. There's a reason why large supermarkets bake bread, the smell makes you feel good and homely - and you end up feeling hungry and buying more. But it’s a seasoned trick for home selling that everyone knows but some people say that "the smell of white tea and figs is more appealing". The point is, people buy with more than just their eyes, they use smell, touch and hearing, giving them a 'feel' for the property. 5 - Clean up. Seriously, you wouldn't believe the number of houses we show where there are dirty dishes still in the sink, rubbish unemptied and papers strewn around the house. And if you have pets, make sure there are no dog hairs or nasty whiffs. If possible, ensure pooch or kitty are outside and haven't left any 'presents' for you (or us). There are loads more things you can do, but just taking care of these 5, every time, will help a lot. In many ways, it's about prospective buyers NOT finding a reason Not to buy. If you have any more questions, just ask!
