Summer has arrived and although I have dipped a toe in the pool it is still not warm enough for me to get in. I mentioned that to my sister in the UK and she commented 'Would you have ever imagined as a fifteen year old in Barton-on-Humber that you would have ever said those words?' How different things could have been if my then boyfriend, (still with him 36 years later) had not been made redundant and moved over to Spain. I still sometimes have to pinch myself, it's not been plain sailing, but I would do it all again to have the life we have here in Spain. It has been wonderful for our darling daughter who was born here and grew up with horse riding (I am sure she made friends with every horse owner in the town), skiing, swimming, beach parties, and something going on most weekends, which meant we hardly saw her from Friday to Sunday. Now her two children are growing up here and granddaughter, at four, already has a busier diary for the summer than we have. She has already been fishing for squid on a friend's boat, to a music festival and of course swimming as she doesn't feel the cold like her gwanma! Ciudad Patricia Officially Opens Brand New Building Ciudad Patricia is delighted to announce the opening of our newest building - IRIS. Residents, Staff, Shareholders and Dignitaries celebrated the event. Celebrations began in the residents’ lounge in the central building with speeches by Location Manager Nadine Sweers and Director Peter Jacobs reflecting on the merging of traditional values with forward thinking ideas surrounding the way Ciudad Patricia meets the ever more demanding needs of retired ‘young-old’. Afterwards, guests walked the few metres to the new apartment building where Peter Jacobs and Ton Sierevogel – a resident of Iris – planted a tree in front of IRIS to mark the occasion. The building itself comprises 15 modern apartments finished to a luxurious standard. Iris apartments have been designed to offer the maximum privacy and comfort. There are private garage parking and storage areas available. These are Ciudad Patricia’s best quality apartments finished to impeccable standards. SAVE MONEY ON A MORTGAGE! A NEW property mortgage law came into effect last month, which is very important to you if you are looking to get a mortgage here in Spain, because it now puts money in your pocket. Sun Lawyers are right across this piece of legislation, which is good news for saving money whilst you get the mortgage, as well as boosting your legal rights. Under the changes, you will only pay the property valuation fee which will be between 300 and 600 euros, and you can choose any valuer to do the work. The rest of the mortgage expenses will be paid for by the bank. If you are thinking of applying to getting a mortgage, then we are the people to help you. Our team have the experience in all property matters, and those all important changes to the law. Sun Lawyers take all the stress out of dealing with the legal red tape, with a team that you can trust. The new law has many aspects about it, but these are some of the key points that we have identified: 1. MORTGAGE TAX. Before the changes, you as the customer had to fork out pretty much all the costs for your mortgage, but now the emphasis shifts to the mortgage lender, though you still have to pay for the valuation. Sun Lawyers will make sure that you only pay what the new law says you have to, and you pocket the savings!

We have the experts that will pour over all the details for you to make this process straight-forward. 3. CHEAPER REPAYMENTS Early mortgage repayments will be made cheaper and can only be charged for if the bank will make a loss. The limits will be different depending on the type of mortgage. 4. REPOSSESSION REDUCED If you get into trouble with your repayments, don’t panic. One of the big new changes in the law is that banks cannot enforce a repossession until at least 12 months, and that can stretch to 15 months, if you hit problems later on during your mortgage period. 5. FLOOR REMOVED The new law sees the ban of applying a minimum interest rate to variable mortgages, which means that banks will no longer be able to apply the controversial floor clause to mortgages. 6. MULTI CURRENCY Customers who have a mortgage in a currency like the British pound will have the right to switch to the Euro at any time, and the lender will have to say how much extra that would cost you.

Always Improving, Always getting better, For Your Safety The big news here at Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is that we have signed the paperwork to buy another brand new ambulance. Sounds simple? Well, unfortunately, for a whole variety of reasons it isn't. The licences and permissions, the purchase, the conversion and the equipping of the vehicle from a basic shell into a state-of-the-art ambulance are all complicated and time consuming. In fact we won't even be able to take delivery of the basic vehicle shell until September. But doing all of this is important to keep our fleet of ambulances, which are akin to mobile Intensive Care Units, up to the very best standard for your safety. We receive no Ayuntamiento or Government funding. Yes you will have seen us partaking in some commercial activities where we charge to supply our ambulance services to the local fiestas, concerts, public events and so on, but essentially we exist by relying on the annual €50 fee paid by our members, and also upon other donations. The total estimated cost of the fully equipped new ambulance will be around €90,000. Roughly two thirds of this is for the vehicle and its conversion. The other third is for the incredible amount of life saving equipment and kit that we need to carry. As a quick example, we need to carry 5 different types of stretchers, neck, head and joint braces etc to cope with all the different types of neck/spinal/other skeletal injury that someone could sustain. One type of back stretcher is in two halves and is slid underneath the patient and fixes together. In extreme cases where it is very important that the patient should be completely immobilised and prevented from moving at all, an inflatable stretcher might be used, this inflates around the person and holds them firm. If you are not yet a member of the AAEdJ, then the above is a very quick synopsis of why you really should be. Accidents and emergencies do happen, and you never know when you may need them. Membership is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. To join, telephone and speak with Laure Bolufer the AAEdJ Registration Manager on 96 579 6099. Or call into the office and see her. (Laure works from 10am to 1pm every weekday). The AAEdJ covers almost all of Costa Blanca North and will come straight to you wherever you are. And finally, if you are reading this and are connected with any Charity, Organisation or Group who could help us with the purchase of a piece of medical equipment for the ambulance, please can you bring us to the attention of your Treasurer or whoever is responsible for your fundraising. The purchase of a piece of medical equipment could be lifesaving, all year round, and for many years to come. ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA. Avenida Juan Carlos 1, No 69, 03730 Jávea. Expat Services – Professionals to Help You I find it astonishing that with the situation regarding Brexit, my professional associates have not been run off their feet with Expats seeking advice and ensuring their money is in a safe, legal and protected investment and all their documentation is in order, regardless of what the final decision turns out to be. What seems on the cards, especially if Boris is the Prime Minister, is on 31st October 2019, the UK will leave the European Union, without a deal. I cannot see this happening, because of the law already in place, but in case it does, please make sure that you are on the Padron, you have submitted a tax return, you are a Resident, you have a Spanish driving licence, Spanish registered vehicle and that your health cover is in place, either privately or with the SIP card. Any monies invested, it is best to discuss this with a financial advisor who is fully regulated and carries indemnity insurance. I hear so many dreadful stories on the television and in the press, where people have gone for high returns, and lost everything. Always do your research to protect yourself. The financial advisor I have chosen to work with runs a family business of long standing and is fully regulated and qualified. Likewise, the accountants and lawyers are a very well established Spanish company with the Directors speaking perfect English. When considering purchasing a property in Spain, do not use the solicitor directly associated with the estate agency or builder. You need total independence and at the same time, please do not be bullied into taking out insurance and life insurance via the bank. They are not special Expat policies, mostly the policies are in Spanish and the life insurance is nearly twice the price as the Bespoke products that I can provide. If you decide you have no choice but to go via the bank (which is totally incorrect), then at least two months before your renewal is due, please give my company the chance to quote as I know you will be very comfortable with the service and the coverage. Walk Your Way Well by Niamh O’Sheehan Eating in a special restaurant? Best pair it with a pricey wine. BBQ with friends? Chilled beer all round please. Good news? Drink to celebrate! Bad news? Drink to obliterate! Bored? Drink! We can easily find an acceptable excuse to consume booze. And living in Spain is just the icing on the cake. In fact it is heavily promoted and encouraged both by our peers and by the clever marketing campaigns that lead us to believe that drinking alcoholic beverages makes us sexier, wittier, friendlier, more relaxed and significantly more popular. I suppose it’s difficult to popularise images of people with red eyes and blotchy skin toppling over, slurring their words and arguing incoherently with their spouses? But, beware. There’s a revolution taking place. And it’s global. People have begun to collectively revolt against the social pressure that advocates drinking alcohol. Although your friends might balk at the idea of you “going sober”, there is a new fashion forming that’s seeing more people investing in their improved physical and mental health rather than their beerbellies. It still feels surprising, but six months ago I became one of these trendsetters. Quite incredible really as I’m the stereotypical “Mum Needs Wine” drinker. And of course, the fact that I’m Irish gives me further licence to overindulge. The idea of AA did not appeal to me in the slightest. I mean I’m not an alcoholic (she said with conviction) and why on Earth would I need to remain anonymous about choosing a healthier lifestyle? Last year I stumbled upon an online group called OYNB (One Year No Beer) and related to their ethos of building a healthier relationship with alcohol by undertaking an abstinence challenge. I started by signing up on the 1st of January for 28 days and here

I remain, 6 months later; fitter, happier and with a renewed sense of drive and clarity. What on Earth is Niamh blathering on about this month you puzzle? I thought this was an article about walking? And that it is. To put it simply, I quite literally WALKED MYSELF SOBER. Initially, to distract from the sorely missed habit of decimating my daily glasses of vino tinto (who’s counting?) I took the advice of the OYNB team and I invested my time and energy into something constructive and began walking my cotton socks off. I set myself ridiculous challenges that filled my head with planning and monopolised my spare hours. I drank in my beautiful Costa Blanca surroundings with an almost insatiable thirst. I devoured the stunning mountain trails with a renewed hunger. Walking became my surrogate vice. My increasing fitness levels meant it was easier to deny myself my favourite poison in the evening. Walking has served as my meditation time, my therapy session and my gym membership all rolled into one. Free of charge! It is not easy to quit a bad habit. It can be brutal, whether it be drinking, drugs, smoking or a toxic relationship. But, “transference” might just be your saviour. If you are hoping to eliminate a pernicious presence from your precious life here’s my advice:- WALK! Overcoming an addiction will be one of your bravest most difficult achievements. But, overcome it you can. Introduce a renewed positivity to your life by discovering the magnificent nature that surrounds us. Fill your soul with goodness rather than toxicity. We are truly blessed to live in this part of the world (that applies to most places actually). So, boot up and get stomping. Walk Your Way Well. WalkingWord: Walking encourages your brain to release endorphins — a neurochemical that boosts your mental health, decreases your sensitivity to stress and pain, and can even make you feel euphoric. TechnoTip: Search Google for OYNB and read about the most amazing forum consisting of Mums, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, Yous and Mes who are joining forces to help each other re-educate themselves about alcohol.

Doing things the M3BT way will get you an A++ Modern design houses utilise new technology building methods and materials that offer vastly improved efficiency. They therefore create large cost savings, as well as a very high standard of comfort. At M3BT (our name stands for M3 Building Technology) our build method is to create an A++ graded home from the outside inwards with insulated walls, roof, windows and energy efficient systems for you to enjoy the comfort of your home at the minimum of cost. Now we know that not everyone likes modern design houses. Some here on the Costa Blanca, particularly in the north, will be more used to the houses the local builders have provided since the 1980s such as the “English Lady's Tower” design, with curved walls and towers. Unfortunately these types of houses are invariably made from concrete blocks, and as a result tend to be very cold in winter, very hot in summer, have poor air circulation and frequently suffer from damp problems. No surprise therefore to learn that these types of traditional building methods are very energy inefficient and in most cases score D, E and F or worse on the energy efficiency scale.

Villas of the future - Modern design is more efficient. If you are of a more open mind, and believe that comfort and energy efficiency is what is required of your future home in Spain, then come and talk with us. We are reminded daily about climate change and whether you believe these changes are manmade or not, the fact remains that the cost of energy is ever increasing and the means to minimise costs and maximise comfort should be paramount in any new home. M3BT homes have large, insulated windows for natural light, thus keeping your home at a comfortable temperature whatever the weather outside. Aero thermia heating, underfloor heating and solar energy are great solutions for providing an ambient temperature in your home and are extremely cost effective. Bio mass heating systems are very affordable and the pellets are subsidised in Spain. But perhaps most of all, our design team are experts in listening to your wishes and desires, and will help you to design beautiful interior and exterior living spaces which will really make the house ‘work’ for you and your lifestyle. M3BT are currently building new villas in Sitges, Barcelona and Costa Blanca North. If you are looking to build a new property why not contact us to discuss your ideas? Call 618 084 156 or visit www.m3bt.com to find out more.

‘Tendon Problems’ I’ve got tendonitis!... or do I really?

Most people have experienced pain in muscles or tendons somewhere in the body. Often this is self-diagnosed or even diagnosed by a health professional, as tendonitis. In medical terms this means inflammation in a tendon, and it is usually a result of overuse or overload of that structure.

Typically, the onset of pain is after a prolonged period of, for example: typing, walking or running too much, having started playing a sport like tennis again, redecorating the house, or simply lifting something too heavy. It could be small, or large movements. Overuse of a muscle or tendon over time can lead to tissue changes at a cellular level and reduced blood-circulation and oxygen supply. This can trigger a chemical reaction to repair the damaged tissue, which often results in a moderate swelling, pain and loss of function. Unfortunately, the term and diagnosis of ‘tendonitis’ is used way too often, and it tends to lead to unnecessary medical intervention. Anti-inflammatory drugs or cortisone injections are working to reduce inflammation, but we have to remember that inflammation is a natural response to damaged tissue and, is part of the healing process. If you experience pain in a tendon, the cause is more likely to be ‘tendinosis’. This means degenerative changes to the tendon due to overuse over a longer period of time. Symptoms can be treated and reduced quite quickly, but it takes more time (could be 3 – 6 months) for the tendon tissue to heal completely.

However, to make sure the tendon is completely healed so you can go back to your normal level of activity (for some the most strenuous activity is housework, for other people it could be running a marathon), it would be best to have a thorough examination by a health professional and treatment to help increase the blood circulation and the elasticity of the affected structure, followed by exercises to regain full strength and function in the area. If you rest the area long enough the pain and swelling will usually go away, but it does not mean that you are fully recovered. The healing process often leads to scar tissue or adhesions with the potential of affecting neighbouring tendons, muscles, nerves, or fascia. Lack of elasticity leaves you prone to irritation and pain in the tendon again once you increase the load on it. Another important reason you should see a therapist is that there may be an underlying cause of the problem elsewhere in your body. If you repeatedly get symptoms in your Achilles tendon, there may be issues with your foot mechanics, your hip or back. A recurring problem with your elbow, like ‘tennis elbow’, may of course be that you are just using it too much, but it may also partially be due to a problem with your neck or shoulder. Recommendations: - Avoid static positions for too long or activities that mean a high number of repetitions without variation. - Don’t overload by lifting excessive weight. - With physical activities, start gently and increase your intensity and load progressively. - If symptoms are already present, see a medical professional to get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Of course, medication is something we need at times and even surgery may be required, but this should be the last option after every conservative treatment has been tried.

Active Release Techniques (ART®) ART treats your soft tissue by combining manipulation and movement. ART entails identifying, isolating, and targeting the affected area to break up scar tissue and improve elasticity and function. This promotes blood flow and faster healing of injuries in muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and fascia. Physioplus has the only ART certified provider in Spain. He is also an international instructor teaching other Physiotherapists, Chiropractors and Osteopaths in this technique. For more information please contact Physioplus, Camino de la Cantera 12, Albir. Fiestas In Pyjamas Are Coming Over To Play! Some of you may remember that we told you last year about a fun book by local author Fiona Jennison called “Gadgets Away, 100 Games” published by Summersdale. The book is packed with classic and quirky games for lots of different locations, to try to veer families away from the all-consuming tablets and phones. As a spin off to the book Fiona has launched a new business in the Costa Blanca which will be of interest to those of you who need to throw a special birthday party for little people aged between 5 and 12. Every year! “Fiestas In Pyjamas” is a mobile fun-fest that comes to the birthday boy or girl's home to set up very cool jungle-themed “tipis”. Hostess Fiona Jennison offers an hour of party games (tailored to your child's age) and organises the blow up beds, sleeping bags, cushions, little tables, cool decorations, tons of popcorn and face painting. Fiona can host the games in English or Spanish, or a bit of both. The choice of an entire all-night sleepover is of course down to the grown-ups. An evening of fun and games also works really well as the parents of the invited children get to collect their wellfed and tired-out kids in their pyjamas ready for bed! Happy days! For more info see Fiona's website www.pyjamafiestas.com or on Facebook or call 626 184 357.

Could Your Hair Use A Little TLC? By Jo Black – Mimis Kru Jávea

You love your hair to shine continually and be manageable, full of volume and No Split Ends! This is how the Mimis Kru clients leave our salon after an experience with the Hot Scissors! Hair in its natural state has sealed ends. The continuing mass in the hair, keeps all the scales and fibres together. When the hair is cut in the conventional method; the ends of the hair are open to atmospheric attack! The continuing mass dries out, then the hair loses its elasticity & volume! The surface appears matt and dull! The ends begin to fray, and the hair becomes brittle resulting in split ends!

Introducing Hot Scissors In our never-ending quest for perfection, we have invested in the Jaguar TC 400 Thermocut System, or to put it simply: Hot Scissors. It works by heating one blade of the scissors, so that when the hair is cut, the heated blade seals off the ends making the hair more tangible and easy to care for! Sealing the ends returns your hair to its natural state and protects it from the environment. The result: more body, more shine, more elasticity, and more volume. No more split ends. If it sounds a bit scary, don’t worry, it’s a tried and tested product recognised internationally, not just seen in Spain. In fact we’re proud to be one of the leading professionals offering this technology, in Mimis Kru style, we’re always on top of our profession to offer the newest innovations in hair and beauty! Mimis Kru can be found in their new joint location off the Avenida del Pla just down from Specsavers. Call 96 579 3584 or visit www.mimiskruhairandbeauty.com.

CBD OIL CAN HELP As you might know CBD is one of the most important compounds of the marijuana plant and offers a wide variety of health benefits, without any of the psychoactive effects (the feeling of 'getting stoned' or 'high'). The CBD molecules have a direct effect on a person's immune system and could therefore help with stress related problems; lack of sleep, high blood pressure, arthritis, ADHD, MS, epilepsy and the list goes on. CBD is a very promising, legal and natural product that can be used against an incredible amount of physical and mental complaints. At the CBD Store Spain, only their own high quality product line is being provided from Azoth. This has been produced in a 100% biological and natural way which is proven in the lab reports that they provide with all the products available. The CBD Store highly recommends people always ask for lab reports when buying CBD products, as they take the health of their clients very seriously. A lot of suppliers promise a certain content of the product which they cannot prove, and because of this the chance of taken in harmful substances increases. Azoth is one of the biggest suppliers of CBD oil in the world and only offers CBD without any trace of the psychoactive compound THC, no added chemicals, pesticides of other harmful substances. Biological and natural is what they stand for. Their production process is under strict control and every supply is tested by a third party laboratory. Do not hesitate to come in for personal advice, our professionals will be at your service! as November 2015 with a formal letter followed by a ‘reasoned opinion’ back in February 2017. Now the EC has decided to bring the matter before the EU beak. Many people stung by this unfair piece of law may now be wondering why it took so long but in the massive machinery of the current 28-member EU, the wheels of justice grind slowly. If sent back to the dressing room, will Madrid ask for time to pay back all the peeps it whacked in the pocket?

In the dog house

The EC has referred Spain to the European Court of Justice over the ‘Modelo 720’ reporting scheme, a piece of legislation that first hit the headlines back in 2012 when Madrid was accused of introducing a “stealth tax” against residents. It was designed to prevent people moving assets abroad to avoid the Spanish taxman, Señor Hacienda; but it also snared many an unwary expat who had kept a UK property or investments before emigrating here, these foreign residents very much the low hanging fruit ripe for picking. And when the whip came down, ouch! Was it painful! Those who failed to either declare in time or in full were hit with swingeing financial penalties. Now Spain faces standing in the dock over the “disproportionate and discriminatory” penalties that could deter individuals and businesses from investing or moving across borders in the single market of the EU bloc. The commission states this is “in conflict with the fundamental freedoms of the EU” and ruled our host nation’s chiefs were offside. It kicked off EU infringement proceedings as long ago

THANKS to the awfully nice person who hurled a full ‘poo bag’ over the hedge, presumably having finally appreciated dog owners should pick up after their pets. Very generous to share; but generations of Troughtons have actually instilled the notion that when it comes to manure to get roses growing, it is horse muck that is needed (and there’s really no need to send bouncing bombs of equine droppings over...but thanks anyway). Presumably this generous breed of dog walker – leaving ‘used’ bags in the gutter, by tree trunks or in my garden – will have another light bulb moment soon and discover bins installed all over the streets by those awfully nice town hall people.

No, of course not,” replies the shocked Villanelle, helpfully offering a piece of helpful advice to the social media addict; yelling: “Get a real life!”

The Face mini lift - normally achieves some 15 to 20 years of rejuvenation of the face Last month we covered 2 of Dr Poole's most requested facial operations: an Eye-brow elevation and an Eye-lid adjustment. This month Female Focus has talked with Dr Poole about another of his most popular facial operations, called the Face mini lift. This procedure is applied to the medium and lower part of the face and neck by lifting the area of the cheeks and facial skin upwards to produce a firmer look to the face and remove sagging jowls. The operation is carried out under local anesthesia, it usually takes about two and a half hours, and typically specialises in giving back the defining line of the jaw. Normal results are that some 15 to 20 years of rejuvenation of the face are achieved. Patients living locally will not normally need to stay overnight, they will be able to be driven home by someone else. The post-operative appointments are very important, with the stitches coming out in 14 days. Quite often patients wish to combine procedures. For example, very often with the Face mini-lift patients want to make some alterations to their eyes too. After all the eyes are ´The Windows to the Soul`. So whether it is the Face mini lift coupled with an Eye-brow elevation or an Eye-lid adjustment as we discussed last month, we encourage our patients to be, well, patient! Yes, a combination of procedures often works extremely well, but it is important not to rush things. Every face is different, and every patient is different, and so is what they are looking to achieve. So whilst Yes, we will make a special combined price offer for the two procedures, it can be much better to have them separately, and then let the results then determine the precise needs of second operation, after the stitches are out and the swelling etc has completely gone down. Dr Poole is keen for patients to take things slowly, to be properly prepared, to recover properly, and then to move forward with further cosmetic work. He is a specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery and he is also a certified family doctor / GP. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, however small, then the place to start is with a consultation. The fist consultative visit is completely free, and with no obligation. Tips and Tricks to Avoid aircon blues this Summer By K&M Aircon Well, summer is officially here and it’s getting warmer and you need to be able to rely on your air-conditioning to keep you cool. At K&M we’ve already received dozens of calls where the customer has gone to use their aircon to find it isn’t working. At K&M we are always on hand should you need new aircon, or a repair. However, when it comes to repairs, many of those calls needn’t have happened. Here’s our top tips to help you avoid the aircon blues. 1. Most people set the aircon to the highest or lowest thinking it will work quicker. It simply isn’t true and what’s more, you're doing damage to the system. The correct way is to set the temperature to where you want and let the system get there. If 24º is good for you, then set the system to 24º and be patient. 2. If you want to keep your air conditioner working at optimum, then clean the filters regularly. It's easy to do, takes 5 minutes and can make a world of difference. Check your manual, unlatch the cover, take out the filter and vacuum it! Simple, quick and easy! 3. Getting your system serviced by K&M once in a while is always good advice. We offer a maintenance service to take care of this. By doing regular maintenance, just once a year is enough, you’ll extend the working life of your system significantly. The autumn is a perfect time for this as it’s the time of year you least likely to be using the system, so why not book now! If at the end of the day you want a new system, we offer all leading makes and models, at competitive prices and fast installation. We’re based in Calpe and serve the whole Costa Blanca. You can contact us by calling 96 587 4838.

Minimalism or Cosy Comfort? Which would be your preference?

Well this is the question we posed in one of our weekly style polls on our Facebook page, and the answer was…..

Quite unexpected actually! We thought cosy comfort would win by a mile but as it turns out the audience was split practically 50/50! So, what makes a style minimalist and what creates cosy comfort in our homes. It goes beyond the first visual appearance which is the most obvious thing. Both styles have a deeper vein running through them, so let’s explore. Minimalism The term minimalism was first introduced to the interiors world around 1917 almost as a back lash to the cluttered interiors of the Victorian period. In its purest form a truly minimal room is one where all extraneous detail, ornamentation, softness and colour have been removed to the point where it may appear almost unfurnished. Everyday objects are hidden away and the interior reflects a lifestyle that desires perfect order and organisation. The fundamental principles of minimalism are sharp lines, solid surfaces, low furniture, and pastel shades, however the modern day minimal style is less strict and mainly based around large open plan spaces with minimum furniture and details, but where interest is supplied by shape, colour and texture. It is popular because the overall feel is very light and free but it can be a difficult style to get right; the balance between cold and clinical versus simplicity and sufficient interest is hard to achieve but the key is to choose pieces carefully and ensure there is a flow in design. Sometimes just a splash of colour or pattern can be enough to break the mould, or the addition of an interesting oversized piece of art which creates focus. In summary minimalism is for people who value the combination of simplicity, sophistication, beauty and practicalness, allowing you to express yourself without using any screaming accessories or unusual furniture! Cosy Comfort By contrast, and as you might expect, cosy comfort is practically the opposite of minimalism. Soft sofas, pumped up cushions and plush fabrics are at the core of a cosy room, however the comfort factor also plays a massive role in achieving the perfect space to relax and unwind. Ergonomics is the key; a sofa that allows you to sit comfortably, a side table that means you don’t have to stretch to use it, even the positioning of the TV can make or break the comfort factor in a room. Lighting is also very important. Creating an ambience rather than a feeling of interrogation with different lamps and strengths of illumination to reflect the function of each space at different times of the day. But again, the cosy comfort style can be a tricky one to achieve. There is a vast difference between a room in which you want to sink back and relax, and one that is so cluttered with “stuff” that it actually creates a stress response. So don’t go overboard on your cushions and accessories, and don’t cram so much furniture into a space that free movement becomes difficult! So, what I think we can conclude is the difference between a minimalistic interior and one that provides cosy comfort are the 2 ends of a sliding scale upon which we all sit somewhere. But what would you have chosen? Pop along to our Facebook page and add your votes to our weekly polls and each month I'll report back with the results. Garden Evolution and Retreats

Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth

For many people their whole garden is a retreat, it is a place to pull away from the world, potter around and generally relax. I sometimes think that a lot of people don’t make the most of their own garden space and no matter how small, you can create wonderful private and relaxing space to enjoy.

&

I have the pleasure of visiting many gardens within the area, but I always find it very exciting when I visit gardens where I can really see the customer enjoys their garden space. It doesn’t matter what size it is, but I can tell immediately that they truly enjoy it. I can also tell that most of these garden spaces are exactly what they are supposed to be, they are very organic in their nature in the way they have been created. I know some of you may be thinking 'I wouldn’t know where to start', but that is the best thing with all of these spaces. I can tell that they have been put together over years via trial and error, and that is the most important thing. They have started and changed and tried different options and as other parts stay and continue to grow, they work and naturally evolve around some of these more heavy centre pieces, be it fountains, trees or other focal points. I can tell they are organic in the fact that they haven’t been one set in stone plan from day one, they have grown and evolved into something probably more than originally intended. I think the reason they excite me is that to lay down a plan for a garden like that is almost impossible, and even when clients get a design from me, no matter how comprehensive it is, ultimately it is a starting point, somewhere to work from and, whether you do the work yourself or pay your gardener to do it, for me the evolution and continuous growth and change of the space can be more continued on next page exciting.

This is what makes it a garden. I have always said, that what I love about building gardens is that when a builder finishes a house it unfortunately starts to decay and get old, but when a garden is finished it is only the beginning and through nurture and care can become amazing. Like the amazing parklands and royal gardens by the likes of Capability Brown, all of these spaces started with small trees, small shrubs and over time they change into spaces to marvel. I often find that these gardens are also the most relaxed spaces, which have wonderful seating areas be it for quiet time, family time or party time. I believe that a garden can’t really have enough spaces within them, you can divide them into little gardens of different styles, or merely different planting types based on the microclimates around the garden. There are so many different options as to how to plan your garden and sometimes, making the phone call to a garden designer like myself, will be your first step to a great garden. Make the most of your space, love your garden. Thanks for reading. Lee continued from previous page

Local War Veteran Presented With French Legion D’honneur By President Macron Of France During The Ceremony Of The 75th Anniversary Of D Day, 6 June Held At The Normandy American War Cemetery Collville-Sur-Mer Charles Phillip Juroe, known to everyone as ‘Jerry’, was one of five World War Two Veterans to have been presented with the Award of the Legion D’Honneur by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, during the 75th Anniversary Ceremony that took place at the Normandy American Cemetery on 6 June. The award was given for their contributions to the Liberation of France from D Day until peace was declared. Jerry landed on Utah Beach on 7 June as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army and then fought through France, Belgium, Germany and finished on the Czechoslovakian border. During his progress through Europe, whilst fighting in Belgium, he was wounded. For this, Jerry was also awarded the Purple Heart. Jerry, who now lives in Calpe, was born in California in September 1923 and was only 20 when he landed in Normandy! He is a member of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca and the Navy League of The United States, Levante Council and still, as he approaches his 96th birthday, takes an active part in both organisations’ functions! Those who know Jerry are absolutely delighted to know that he has been deservedly recognised for his war service in France! The photographs show Jerry (the veteran without a hat) with three other award recipients, just prior to the start of the Ceremony and, wearing his Legion D’Honneur, with Colonel Xavier Toutain, the Defence Attaché at the French Embassy in Madrid, just after the Ceremony on the bluff just above what had been Omaha Beach on D Day. Colonel Toutain was instrumental and a great help in processing Jerry’s application for the award through the many bureaucratic channels that had to be circumnavigated. Our warmest congratulations to Jerry, a much deserved award for a special veteran!

Malcom's Musings Albir’s Forgotten Mini Menagerie remembered by Malcolm Smith Created in and around a converted old bungalow on the lower Helado hillside en route to the lighthouse this unusual setting was owned (lived in) by what I would describe as a couple of aging eccentrics – possibly in their 60s – in the early 1980s. He was a quiet far eastern (maybe from Singapore or Indonesia) retired businessman and his wife and her aged, blind mother, I believe were of Dutch extraction but I cannot be sure, it was a long time ago so my recollections could be less than perfect. The house was almost completely shielded from the road by thick bushes and hedgerows centred by an ornamental pond which was well stocked with gold fish and shubunkin, turtles, newts and possible other amphibians. The grounds and its bushy surroundings was free range to small birds and small animals of the hedgehog, guinea-pig and squirrel ilk. The ‘pond’ birds included dab chicks, coots, mallards, signets plus the odd goose and the occasional heron in season. There were also ground birds of the domestic and Chinese fowl variety all of which appeared to live in harmony. Lizards and Geckos were plentiful as were some small rodents of the groundhog and field mice variety. I became friendly with the owners and spent some time photographing their livestock for an article which was later published. The ‘curators’ were rather introvert and withdrawn. They seemed not to mingle a great deal with neighbours. Their menagerie cum open aquarium and partially indoors small bird sanctuary – beautifully colourful, tropical singing and chattering birds of the tit, humming bird and canary kind – extended to their first floor bedroom and was astounding. The headboard of their exotic bed was a flat, glowing green, glazed tropical vertical flowing waterfall from a miniature rockery with colourful lizards and brilliantly coloured baby turtles basking and scampering around and above their sleeping space. Elsewhere on the premises were a couple of grey flop eared rabbits and two silver Siamese plus a dusky black Burman cat. The whole place was unbelievably breathtaking. Like being in another world. I spent some pleasurable time there but my hosts were gravely concerned with the health of their elderly companion and were planning to return to the East. I eventually lost touch (they quietly disappeared) and a few years later I looked for these delightful folk again but could not find them. I asked around but no one seemed to remember them. I was intrigued so I spent a little time exploring. There was no lane, no cottage and certainly no menagerie …..they had all completely disappeared! However in the region where I thought my animal paradise had been there was a new urbanisation and quite a different world. Converted and sold, bulldozed or whatever, the Albir magical menagerie had gone forever!

The Original Charity Shop Makes Double Donation Recently Javea’s Original Charity Shop and library made a double donation of €1,000 each to The Javea Autism Association and Helen Davis of the Organisation Spread Some Sunshine. The Jávea Autism Association made an appeal for financial aid to help pay for a summer school teacher for autistic children. Ramon and staff were delighted to accept the cheque for €1,000. Helen Davis of Spread Some Sunshine appealed for help to finance a small abode for a mother and daughter in Sri Lanka who are destitute and live without running water, electricity etc. Helen wished to thank the Original Charity Shop most sincerely and explained that the money will help to employ two local builders to continue the house build. The Original Charity has recently extended its premises. We now have a superb extension with lots of space for small furniture items, curtains, bedding, pictures, tools, crockery, glassware, electro items, books and much more. Great “End of Season” dinner for Moraira-Teulada U3A Wine Group The Moraira-Teulada U3A Wine Tasting group celebrated another successful season of very enjoyable and successful tastings with an end of term dinner. Some 80 members met up at the popular BeniAsia restaurant in Benitachell where the owner, Fan Fan, and her team surpassed themselves with a great spread of delicious food and brilliant service. Everyone very much enjoyed themselves and the animated discussions round the tables went on late into the night. Heartfelt thanks and a round of applause were given to Pat and Brian Clarke, the Group Leaders who arranged this event, for all their hard work and time spent in organising, not just this evening’s dinner, but the whole successful season of tastings. After a summer break, the group will be back together in September. Already a day trip to Yecla for a tour of Bodegas Castaño during the harvesting of grapes, has been arranged for 11 September. The Castaño family are renowned for their Monastrell wines which make up the major part of their three million bottle a year output. The craft market in Jávea port returns for the summer The traditional summer fair can now be found by the sea front at the end of Avenida Jaime I in the port of Jávea (see Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/rx5uWDjHiYs or search for "Feria de Artesanía Xàbia"), until 2 September (except for a few days when the locals celebrate their fiestas) opening every evening from 7pm until midnight. This is the seventh year running that Amata (the regional craft association) joins forces with the local shopkeepers to liven up the promenade along the sea front with a craft fair. A real craft fair, with real craft workers who make what they sell, and hope to sell what they make. Not for nothing has Amata chosen the slogan "Artesanía de Autor®" - which means that what you see is made by the man or woman on the stall. The stalls can vary from week to week, but you will always find that every stall offers something different: leather bags, leather belts, original lamps from recycled material, rag dolls, wooden toys and puppets, jewellery from silver, copper, ceramics, macramé or recycled tins, hand painted designer clothes and even some paintings and water colours. Many of the people will be at work in their stalls so you can get them to add a name or a detail or, if you can wait a few days, let them make something specially for you. Amata was set up in 1998 and remains true to its original philosophy, which is that only goods made by the people on the stalls can be sold on the craft fairs it organises. That is why more and more aficionados have come to appreciate this special quality - the quality of a gallery, sold in the street from a stall. Several stalls come for the whole summer, others just a few weeks so as to combine a holiday at the beach with the possibility of earning a living. It's a varied show, week by week. Never boring. A visit to the market can be combined with a stroll to the port (with its fishing boats and fish market) and back along the promenade with its attractive bars and restaurants, shops and terraces, to enjoy the cool sea breezes and watch all the other visitors walking, jogging and cycling along. And, if you like modern architecture, you can have a look at the Virgen de Loreto church, a concrete structure shaped like a ship! You can even get to the market in the tourist train that runs every hour between the Arenal beach of Jávea and the Port: it stops right at the fair! Come and see for yourself the difference with other beach fairs! For further details ring 639 979 678 (and Elvira speaks English). There is also a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/feriaartesaniajavea/) where you can find any news about special activities like live music in this fair and possible changes in the opening times.
