Cancerous growth and glaucoma diagnosed after routine eye exam at Specsavers Ópticas A VISIT to Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea proved a sight saving experience for John, when his optometrist discovered a growth on his eyelid and suspected glaucoma. John visited the store in Jávea for a routine eye test and was shocked to discover that the test showed very high pressure in his eye, and his optic discs, the point where the optic nerve leaves the eye to connect to the brain, had some changes. These are two red flags which led optometrist Louise Stone to refer him for suspected glaucoma. The store also suggested that he was referred for further tests on a growth on his eyelid, which turned out to be cancerous. John says: “My last eye test before visiting Specsavers had not identified any problem with my eye health, and I wasn’t experiencing any symptoms of glaucoma, so I am so pleased I decided to visit Specsavers. I would not have known if they hadn’t identified it”. Following the eye test, John was given a letter from the optometrist to take to his doctor and he was referred to Denia hospital. There they diagnosed him with glaucoma and confirmed that the growth on his eyelid was cancerous. They removed the basal cell carcinoma, operated on a drooping eyelid and also prescribed him drops for the glaucoma, which he takes twice a day. “They were wonderful at the hospital, moving so quickly to diagnose, operate and provide me with medication to save my sight. I was delighted with the treatment I received.”

Female Focus June 2019

In April this year, John returned to Specsavers in Jávea, two years on, for another routine eye test and to share his story with the team. During the comprehensive test they were able to report that the drops were working, causing his eye pressure to drop significantly, and everything else was looking good. “It was great to see John back with the glaucoma under control and the eye lid carcinoma removed. We urge everyone to make sure that their eye test includes comprehensive health checks, as well as simply checking your prescription, as it is an important way to protect your vision and your health in general.” Due to this experience, the team in Specsavers Ópticas in Calpe and Jávea are now offering free eye tests with complete health checks. They are also happy to check your sunglasses free of charge to ensure they have the necessary UV protection. Visit them in Avenida Ejércitos Españoles No. 6 in Calpe or Avenida Del Pla 125 in Jávea, or visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

You put the duvet on.... You take the duvet off.... on - off -on - off.... bet I'm not the only one getting fed up with this weather. At this rate we are going to be starting summer swimming in autumn! I know - by next month we will be complaining it's too hot again! Hopefully you all voted in whichever election(s) you are eligible for as it is so important to democracy that everyone turns out and casts their vote. Darling daughter was giving me the run down on all the manifestos and really getting passionate about local politics - almost did an election speech in the middle of the lounge at one point - could there be something there for the future..... sley

Total Care Care becomes Automart Talleres Different Name, Same Great Service… and more besides. Over the years, Jimmy Dean has built up quite the reputation for fixing and servicing cars from his Total Car Care garage in Benissa. Customers appreciate his incredible knowledge of car mechanics and his willingness and ability to fix even the strangest of problems. With this success Jimmy came to the realisation that the business had grown and grown, but there was only one Jimmy. So what to do? The answer when it came was simple – and the business has now been acquired by AutoMart – the well-known car sales people with hundreds of quality cars for sale in their Benissa and La Nucia showrooms. This was a match ‘made in heaven’ (well actually over a coffee in Benissa – same thing!). The owners at AutoMart needed to offer a full service package, and Jimmy needed the benefits of working in a larger organisation. The result – AutoMart Talleres which can be found still on the industrial estate in Benissa and most importantly, with Jimmy still at the helm. From a customer perspective, you can expect the same great Jimmy Dean knowledge and enthusiasm coupled with greater efficiency, more capacity and an even wider knowledge to get you back on the road. If you’re buying a new car, it’s important to have the reassurance that if something goes wrong, the people selling the car can get it fixed. So buying a car at AutoMart has the added insurance that they can offer this service. And when it comes to regular servicing, AutoMart can now offer you 10% off for the entire time you own the car saving you potentially hundreds of euros. If you need a new car, try AutoMart on the N332 just outside Benissa or on the CV70 in La Nucia. If you have a breakdown or need a service, take your car to AutoMart Talleres on Poligono Industrial in Benissa or call 96 573 0225. You’ll be back on the road in no time. Sun Lawyers gives us a small tax guide for non-residents in Spain The Spanish tax system is complicated, confusing and messy. To pay the corresponding taxes we have to correctly fill out a series of forms from the Spanish government. It is our duty as citizens. Failure to fulfill this duty entails a series of sanctions, such as fines and even imprisonment. Sun Lawyers experts can help you carry out all these procedures. Today we speak with lawyer José María Lomax about taxes for non-residents in Spain. For tax purposes, a person is a Spanish resident when they live more than 183 days a year in Spanish territory, regardless of whether they have an official residence permit or not. It is also considered that a person is resident in Spain when their centre of vital interests is in this country - for example, if their partner or a dependant minor lives here - or when their main investment or most of their economic interests are in Spain. If you do not meet any of these conditions, you are a non-resident in Spain, but you may be required to pay certain taxes. According to José María Lomax, the Spanish tax system operates through a self-assessment system and could demand the payment of taxes corresponding to properties in Spanish territory, capital gains or income from freelance jobs, among others patrimonial profits. In Spain, the fiscal year begins on 1 January and ends on 31 December and the Tax Agency requires the payment of taxes for the profits received, and assets in possession in this country. José María Lomax warns us that Spain works with a progressive income tax system, which means that the more you win or own, the greater the amount you will have to pay. Non-resident in Spain from a European Union member state or a European Economic Area country will be charged a Spanish income tax rate of 19% as a general rule. For non-residents of a non-EU member state or a non-EEA country the general rate applicable will be 24%.

What taxes do non-residents and property owners have to pay? Each person who has a property in Spain has to pay the corresponding quarterly or annual taxes. According to José María Lomax, if the property is owned by more than one person, then each individual is treated as an independent taxpayer. But what taxes have to be paid by them? It depends on the main use that is given to the property. If the property is for private use, the owner will have to pay an annual tax. However, if the property is rented out, they will have to pay another different tax. On the other hand, if the property is used during the year for private use and is also rented out for some months, the owner will have to pay the proportional part of each tax. In addition, non-residents who rent a property are required to pay tax on rental income four times a year from January 1 to 20, April, July and October. If you want to know more about Spanish taxes or other issues, such as the documents you need to buy a property in Spain, call Sun Lawyers. Car Insurance No doubt you would assume that all car insurance is the same and to a vast degree, you would be correct. One vital point is that it is the car that is insured, unlike the UK where it is the driver that is insured. This means that only the driver is insured for injury, disability or death automatically here and the passengers are not. What does this mean? Well, in a nutshell, if anything happened to your passengers the driver would be financially liable for any injuries, disabilities or death. This, of course, means a very large on-going bill. You also will be liable to be sued by the passenger(s) injured. The medical bills alone could be daunting. Doesn’t make good reading, but few seem to be worried by this. So why, despite my many warnings, are so many of you driving cars with only the drivers seat insured? There is no way you can kid yourself that it is never going to happen. Accidents can and do happen, frequently, whether caused by yourself or others. Sometimes Liberty Seguros policies are priced a little higher than others from my company. One of the reasons for this is because I made a decision many years ago to make the cover for all seats part of the policy automatically. So the price you are quoted covers you and your passengers from a potential catastrophe. In Spain, the assistance you can call upon with the grua as part of your policy is fantastic. It means that you do not have to join an independent breakdown service at an added cost. With Liberty you have open ended kilometres but with many other companies these are limited and there may be a cost to you and a private grua is very expensive. No, not all car insurances are the same and although the premium could be lower you could be in for some nasty shocks. Please read your policy very carefully and do not accept the verbal word that you are fully covered. Cheaper is not always the best. If you would like a quotation or any questions answered, please call one of my consultants, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

A Writer with Passion Twenty-five years ago Alexander Sinclair took a decision to abandon his job as a history lecturer and start a new career as a professional author. Knowing he only had rudimentary possession of this skill, he took four years off to learn this new profession and debuted in 1999 with his first internationally bestselling book that saw him invited to sign copies in Harrods. Since then he has had a string of successes as an author of bestselling biographies and spellbinding historical fiction. Then, ten years ago, came another change when he and his wife decided to move to the Costa Blanca and begin a new life far from rainy Britain. This coincided with Alex publishing his first childhood memoir, Mummy Doesn’t Love You, in which an insane mother tries to destroy the life and mind of her own son. That book received critical acclaim and reached number 5 in the UK paperback bestseller chart. For the last decade Alex has been writing television documentaries and lecturing on creative writing and history as a guest speaker across Europe. Whilst doing this he has been preparing his next big project: a compelling series of books on the downfall of Russian Tsar Nicholas in 1917.

Gripping the bit between his teeth, Alex has now written a thrilling sequel titled A Mother’s Revenge that tells of his teenage years. It is a tale of madness, danger, a murder attempt, and Alex’s ultimate salvation that will leave the reader breathless and haunted long after the final page. Taking The Beauty Industry By Storm...... Needle-free dermal fillers are possible thanks to the most advanced technology available on the market! The process is completed with excellent precision and is a lot safer for the patient. This makes No-Needle Filler ideal for those who feel uncomfortable or frightened by the idea of injections. The process of having fillers can now be gentle and unobtrusive compared to traditional needles. Filler with the needle can be very painful. There is bleeding and bruising involved not to mention the trauma to the skin from the needle can actually cause scar tissue! With our European technique of No-Needle Filler, it is injected with a pressurised pen. This treatment is gentle and delivers instant results! The pen uses pressurised air enabling the product to penetrate down to the Dermis for an instant long-lasting plumping effect! The Filler Pen Sprays an even layer of Filler beneath the skin surface instead of leaving large lumps of filler like the Needle. Benefits of No-Needle Filler: With No-Needle filler, there is no pain, unnecessary trauma and swelling of the skin and no downtime. You can go back to your daily activity right away and don't have to worry about being lumpy and red for the day or week! The results are instant and long-lasting. We can treat the entire face including; smile lines, lips, chin, jowls, eyes, nose, cheeks and frown lines between brows! We use hyalax and other quality fillers that consist of a gel made of hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Injecting HA gel under the skin helps to instantly restore your skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth) as well as to add volume to your lips. Results are instantaneous and can last up to 9 months. Aging: As you grow older, fat around your mouth and chin diminishes, as well as the size of your actual (mandible) jawbone. These differences are the reason your face is showing signs of aging. Sooner rather than later is the best philosophy when treating your marionette lines, wrinkled mouth, thinning lips, and jowls. Fortunately, there is a way to stop the clock on the appearance of aging. The secret to the effectiveness of Filler gel formula is a naturally-occurring sugar in the body known as Hyaluronic Acid (HA). That is because volume, moisture, and suppleness exist when great amounts of HA is found in the spaces between skin cells. As a baby, you had plenty of your own HA along with a plump, firm face. But over the years, levels of HA decrease and leave you with sagging skin and memories of your past youthful glow. HA products treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and even plump your lips to confidently move into your future with a time-defying fresh face. This treatment is available now with Claire @C.A STUDIO special offer price for June is only 190€. The photos show before and after work by Claire, model is Amanda from C. A Studio. The Eyes Have It!

Over the past 2 months we have covered the Top 10 Frequently Asked Questions about Cosmetic Surgery. This month Female Focus has talked with Dr Poole about 2 of his most requested facial operations: an Eye-brow elevation and an Eyelid adjustment. Eye-brow elevation Symmetry plays an ever important role in the way we feel about our appearance. One of the biggest problem areas that both men and women dislike about themselves? Their eye-brows. From being asymmetrical to completely missing, eye-brows are something that many people are concerned about when they look in the mirror. The eye-brow elevation operation is simple and can give spectacular results and is carried out under local anesthesia. A tiny incision of less than half an inch is made over the tail of each brow. Tissues are separated to gain access to the periosteum of the frontal bone, where one or two stitches are made to anchor the skin to a higher position. The skin is then closed by invisible intradermal stitches thus leaving practically no scar. Eye-lid adjustment This is an operation on the eye-lids, usually top and bottom aimed to remove the extra folds of skin that normally develop on the top, together with the wrinkles that get marked on the lower, causing the eyes to look sad, tired or even worried. It can also deal with the fatty pads that some people develop in both, top and lower lids. Which operation you should choose, or indeed a combination of the two which often works extremely well, is entirely down to the individual and what they are looking to achieve. Remember: every face is different and every patient is different. Some patients ask to have both operations done at the same time, but Dr Poole advises against this, because having performed hundreds of facial operations he has seen the best results achieved by doing one operation first, letting the swelling go down and the scars heal, and then reassessing before the second operation is performed. The cost is exactly the same having the two operations separately, as it would be doing them at the same time, but overall better results are obtained by doing things in two stages. Dr Ignacio Poole is a specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery. He is also a certified family doctor / GP. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, however small, then there is an invitation waiting for you. Feel free to call into the clinic and find out about all the different services and procedures - don't forget that your first consultative visit is completely free. RELAX, EXPLORE and DISCOVER at the Wellness Festival at Akinon Resort on 29 and 30 June This June, Akinon Resort and Vitality Drop partnered to organise the Wellness Festival together with local companies like Gaia Now. They want to deliver an interactive festival experience dedicated to wellness and wellbeing in peaceful and tranquil surroundings. “We wanted to give people an event where they could relax with tasty food and smoothies, explore exciting workshops and seminars and discover the importance of wellness for your wellbeing”, says Didrik from Akinon Resort. The festival takes place over two days, Saturday and Sunday, and you can either buy a one or a two-day all-inclusive pass. Cooking classes, essentials oils, clairvoyance, yoga and the power of positive thinking are just some of the interactive experiences available to attendees. “The idea was to bring together local companies and individuals who work within wellness in the local area”, explains Jelena from Vitality Drop. “We feel this is a great opportunity to take one or two days off and treat yourself, with a focus on body, mind and spirit”, she continues. In addition to all the included activities, attendees will have the chance to book one-to-one consultations and take advantage of special festival offers from the companies present. Sunbathing by the pool with some refreshing beverages and a relaxing foot massage is also on the menu. “It was important for us to create a relaxing and peaceful experience that at the same time was fun, interactive and informative”, says Phil from Gaia Now. “The plan is then to build on this to create a regular festival and to expand on this”, he explains passionately. The festival will also include a couple more companies, so make sure you check out 'Akinon Resort', 'Vitality Drop' and 'Gaia Now' on Facebook for updates, more information and booking information. WALK YOUR WAY WELL by Niamh O’Sheehan Do you remember when you were a kid and you participated in a sponsored walk? You’d rope in your grannies, aunties and even the local corner shop to sponsor you. As a child, it didn’t really matter for whom we were collecting. It was the challenge of filling your page that drove us, hastily shoving the grubby crumpled page and bic pen into unsuspecting neighbours hands with our rounded expectant eyes. How could they refuse? It felt fantastic every time someone signed and you accumulated your 50 pence or £1 donations. The hard work of walking the five or ten miles wasn’t actually hard work at all. I have fond memories of completing many sponsored walks with my small friends in the quintessential Irish drizzle. Nowadays, as I begrudgingly become aware that I’m not invincible, I’ve become passionate about walking. It’s good for our physical being and even better for our troubled souls. What do I hope to achieve by writing here in Female Focus each month? Quite simply I hope to encourage some of you to get out there and stretch your legs. Breath in the beauty that surrounds you, get the blood pumping and give your body a well deserved treat. I am fortunate to live in a walkers’ paradise with incredible climate and stunning "sendas". But, sometimes I like to walk further afield. This month I found myself doing 42kms (26 miles) through the streets of London for 8 long hours, guided solely by dim street lights and an incandescent moon. Did I mention our main attire consisted of our bras? Not simply because I’m mad, but because the event was in aid of Breast Cancer. Myself and my friend Sharron raised £500 and walked with 15,000 other folk of all fitness levels. Can you believe that our tiny donation contributed towards creating a pot of over £3,000,000. It’s truly incredible what we can do when we come together. Long gone are the days of the A4 sponsorship sheets and the hard-sell door-to-door collections. We are fortunate to live in an age where we can choose anything from a Facebook birthday fundraiser campaign (where your friends can make a donation to your chosen charity instead of buying you a bottle of wine!) to a customised gofundme campaign. The options are endless and easy.

Female Focus June 2019

So, if you have considered tackling a physical challenge outside your comfort zone why not also do it for the good of others? My friend Maya from Denia, who suffers from Fibromyalgia, is tackling the magnificent Montgo climb. Her challenge is a heartening demonstration of how living with chronic pain will not inhibit her dreams. To top it all off, she is aiming to raise £1000 towards pancreatic cancer research. So, if you’d like to see what all this online fundraising lark is about, here’s a chance to experience it first-hand. Visit here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/maya-montgo. Feeling inspired? Be a Maya! Check out www.walkthewalk.org for this and many other local and international charity walks. Go solo or gather a group of friends. Reawaken your inner child! WalkingWord: SENDA is a Spanish word you will see and hear everywhere in relation to local walking trails. It means, quite simply, trail/track. That was easy! TechnoTip: When donating online, UK run charitable events will suggest you tick the GIFTAID option. Gift Aid is an income tax relief designed to benefit charities by increasing the value of your donation by 25% because the charity can reclaim it, at no extra cost to you. If you are donating from the UK this is fantastic. However, if you are donating from Spain or elsewhere abroad DO NOT SELECT the Gift Aid tick box as you will complicate your donation process.

A Big Thank You to The Rotary Fellowship Costa Blanca North In our article last December we asked for help from local Organisations and Charities in equipping one of our ambulances with some of the vital pieces of equipment that our ambulances need to carry. Just recently the Rotary Fellowship Costa Blanca North have presented a cheque for €1,295 to the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea (AAEdJ) to enable the Asociacion to complete the allocation of a Capnograph (shown in photo bottom left) to its 24 hour ambulance fleet, spread throughout the Costa Blanca from Orba and the Jalon Valley to Benidorm and all locations in between. Patient locations are identified by GPS and relayed to the appropriate ambulance. A Capnograph assesses ventilation, that is the air movement in and out of the lungs, and is the most reliable method to confirm correct advanced airway placement. It is a very useful tool to identify when patients need assisted ventilation. Our picture (top left) shows Juan Crisostomo of the Amigos receiving the cheque after demonstrating the Capnograph to Rotary Fellowship President Stuart Badman, with his Amigos colleague Laure Bolufer (the AAEdJ Registration Manager) and members of the Fellowship looking on. The names of Rotarians in the photo: L to R Jerry Arnold (Chairman), Barry Lloyd (Member) and Stuart Badman (President). Our sincere thanks to them, and to all of the other Rotarians who have made the purchase of the Capnograph possible. Once again, we are please asking that if you are reading this and connected with any Charity, Organisation or Group, please can you bring us to the attention of your Treasurer, or whoever is responsible for your fundraising. We do not ask for money, but the purchase of a piece of medical equipment could be lifesaving, all year round, and for many years to come. Membership of the AAEdJ is just €50 for a whole year for a whole family. To join, telephone and speak with Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (Laure works from 10am to 1pm every weekday). The AAEdJ ambulance service covers almost all of Costa Blanca North and will come straight to you wherever you are. ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA. Avenida Juan Carlos 1, No 69, 03730, Jávea. I don't like plants Oddly this is a statement I come across quite a lot, I do understand how lots of people come to this, but as with many things I think plants become the unwilling victims in the garden arena. Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth

I actually believe that it's not the fact that people dislike plants, but really they don't like their garden and or the affect that their current plants have on their garden. Like the mess they make etc. Good garden design and well placed plants shouldn't cause you any issue. I know that this is the case. I have designed and built enough gardens and dealt with the mess or lack of, to know.

I know people who have gone out of their way to remove all plants and trees from their garden, to me this is sacrilegious, of course it is, I design and build gardens. But for me the beating heart of any home is the garden.

Gardens add so much more than just value to a property, they add privacy, heart and a connection to the planet we live on. They create homes for nature and make us feel at ease. I firmly believe that I could turn someone who doesn't want plants in their garden around, as said, it's not a personal hatred toward plants as much as a fear of not knowing how to deal with them, how to prune them and the mess they make. But that is my point, if the garden was designed to their needs and abilities, then none of this would be an issue. It's about creating the right place and right plants to suit the needs of the customer. As regards to maintenance, a well designed and planted garden reduces that and if you don't want to deal with it, you can call in the people who know how to do it, quickly and painlessly. Don't stress yourself about a garden and choose to live in a baron wasteland, call the company who know how to give you what you want and for what you need. You can have a great garden without fear of it dying, mowing or pruning, or rubbish falling from things. All you have to do is call Charlesworth Gardens and you too will be able to start to enjoy a fulfilled and happier life with the positive aspects that plants and gardens add to it.

Apartment Living can still be Stylish

Whether you live in an apartment, have downsized, or invested in order to rent out, if you think apartments can’t be stylish spaces, then think again. Successfully decorating an apartment simply requires a different styling approach compared to larger homes due to space and functionality limitations. But some of our favourite decorating projects have been apartments, and many didn’t have a massive budget or loads of space. So this month we’ve created our top 10 interior decorating tips that are sure to make a big impact in your apartment! 1. Tailor the Scale of Furnishings As most apartments are smaller than detached villas, less square footage is often the biggest concern of homeowners when furnishing and decorating an apartment. It may sound simple but the best way to increase the sense of space is to select furnishings that are suitable to the size of the room and avoid having so much furniture that the space feels crowded. Look for smaller, streamlined furniture, with profiles that are low to the ground, contemporary, simple and functional. 2. Zone Functional Areas The same is true whether you are living in a large open plan villa, or a smaller open plan apartment, if the living, dining and kitchen areas are combined, zoning the larger space into defined areas with a specific purpose maximises the functionality and versatility of a single room by creating micro-spaces. This can be done through floating furniture arrangements with specific-use areas, such as lounging, dining and entertainment, or through the clever use of decoration and colour. Remember though, when grouping furniture together in a smaller space, keep the accessibility and traffic flow throughout the room in mind. Design your areas with clear walkways and unobstructed doors. 3. Source Multi-Purpose Furniture In an apartment where space is at a premium, it’s important to maximise the usefulness of every square inch available. Finding furniture that is designed to have a double duty is a must; a pull-out sofa can create a guest room in a one-bedroom apartment, ottomans and coffee tables with hidden storage supply more cupboard space, and choosing a dining table that can be extended when necessary, but small when not in use is a smart way to save space. 4. Add Storage Space by going Vertical Most apartments are lacking in storage space and the most practical way of creating more is to simply go vertical. Instead of utilising valuable floor space think about moving up with your storage, with items like floating shelves and wall-hanging storage devices that are above head height and taking cupboards and shelving to ceiling height to store away all those items that are not in everyday use. 5. Make Use of Corners Corners frequently go unused but in a smaller space they are a valuable and often overlooked source of extra square inches. Clever and smart solutions can create extra seating, storage or design details without impacting the primary and centrally located areas of an apartment. 6. Introduce Colour using Art and Rugs In small rooms painting full walls with colour can have the effect of drawing a space in and making it feel even smaller. However using art to add colour, impact and interest is a good alternative. Female Focus June 2019

FF - Your Magazine Page 33 www.femalefocusonline.com Even the addition of simple painted canvases as opposed to a full wall can be as effective. In addition to art, vibrant rugs quickly add colour and texture especially if you are in an older apartment where you can’t do much about the tiles on the floor; a brightly coloured rug can conceal unattractive flooring and add a pop of colour and freshness. 7. Incorporate Lamp Lighting If your apartment has built-in lighting, for example spots in the ceiling that you can’t necessarily change, you still can create a warm, inviting atmosphere with a carefully thought out lighting plan that uses lamps. Use strategically placed floor standing and table top lamps to help zone an open plan space such that only certain areas of the room are lit at any one time. 8. Reinvigorate your Windows with Curtains Your apartment may feature only small windows or more often than not large sliding doors that open onto a terrace. However this does not mean you should leave them undressed in order to make the space feel bigger. The use of lighter weight fabrics not only provides a level of privacy but allows light to still penetrate the room. Dress curtains are also a popular solution that brings in the beauty of a fabric without the bulk. They are a good way to conceal ugly window frames, and when hung high and away from the window can give the impression of a larger window and apartment. In our experience a combination of light weight curtains and a pair of dress curtains hung on a double pole is by far the most popular choice made by apartment owners. 9. Keep the Colour Palette Light and Airy If your apartment is short on space, a good way to open it up and make it feel larger and more inviting, is to incorporate a simple, light colour palette throughout. This does not mean you have to stick to cream and beige, but if the space is incredibly small, a neutral colour palette can also work well to keep a continuation of sight lines and prevent visual breaks that can make a unit look and feel even smaller. 10. Make the most of Outdoor Spaces One of the great features of many apartments is the availability of outdoor terraces and balconies. Maximise your use of this space and include it with your decorating plans. Look for furnishings with durable and stylish frames that will withstand the elements and extend your living spaces. These outdoor areas are an extension of indoor living areas, with the proper furnishings, they instantly add square metres to your apartment. Small can be beautiful and with a bit of extra coordination and attention, small spaces can be incredibly charming and functional. Did you know we did more than just curtains? If you would like Lotus Interiors to help maximise the space of your apartment and give it a ‘wow factor’, contact us to set up a consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!

El Torito Restaurante By Claudine Tang A warm welcome awaits you at El Torito, the staff have the biggest smiles and the restaurant has a nice homely feel. The restaurant offers you Norweigan, Filipino and European dishes, an interesting mix that will definitely satisfy most palates!! We tried out their new three course menu of the day priced at a competitive 9,95€. We went for the house salad and the Filipino Spring Rolls to start and they were fresh and delicious. For main course we chose a traditional Norweigan dish of Fish Cakes served with potatoes and gravy which is freshly prepared from a homemade recipe and we are told that it is very typical for Norwegian people to eat at home. As a contrast the other main course we chose was called “Tocilog” which is a Filipino dish of marinated Belly Pork served with fried rice, egg and a lovely mango salad. For dessert we had “Nilupak” translated to Cassava Cake. You may know it as Yam! It was a moreishly tasty but not overly sweet dessert to finish. El Torito is open from 9am for breakfast to dinner time where you can get an all day breakfast, waffles, coffee and homemade cake, bocadillos with fresh homemade integral bread baked on the premises, plus a menu offering many different dishes. It’s important to mention that everything is homemade in this kitchen and that the team are looking forward to welcoming you to El Torito! Located on the Carrer Manuel De Falla 1, El Albir. Reservations: 603 287 701. See the advert below right for further details.

The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca Salute to the Ladies Members and guests of The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca enjoyed a formal lunch on Wednesday, 15 May at The Cumbre Restaurant, Benitachell, to ‘salute’ their ladies.

Reception drinks on the Restaurant’s picturesque terrace were followed by an excellent lunch where, on arrival at their table places, the Ladies all received gifts of Red Roses and chocolates. After a warm welcome from the Chairman, Max Maxwell, the Association Honorary Chaplain, Father Marcus Ronchetti, said an appropriate grace. Lunch then followed. After desert, Father Marcus gave The Aircrew Exhortation. Tom Brown, the Association Secretary then proposed the Toast to His Majesty, King Felipe, Peter Langley, one of the association’s Life Vice Presidents then proposed the Toast to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Henry Horth, the Association’s President, then gave a very personal and amusing but much welcomed and appreciated talk which concluded with a rousing toast to The Ladies. A superb and equally much appreciated response on behalf of the Ladies was then given by Barbara Power. Barbara closed her response by inviting the Ladies to join her in a toast to The Gentleman. The immensely successful occasion was brought to a close with the Aircrew Toast, ‘To Absent Friends and Fellow Aircrew’ which was proposed by Henry Horth. If any reader would like to receive more information concerning the Aircrew Association they should contact the Secretary on: 96 640 4123.

On 18 July the Red Cross has one of its main fundraising events, "El Sorteo de Oro", with 11.700 prizes. All the funds raised help the most vulnerable people in our society: elderly people, disabled, children in need... Please show them your support by buying a ticket or two. You could also be a winner. Thank you and good luck. Female Focus June 2019

This time it was the Civil Protection of Benitachell who were the grateful recipients of vital communications and emergency equipment to the value of 4,706€. This equipment will allow them to continue carrying out their invaluable functions protecting the local community, especially in times of heightened risk such as wildfires and floods. Lion President, Laura Hillstead, along with members of the TM Lions were present to hand over the equipment on 22 May, and the Mayor of Benitachell thanked Lion Laura personally and the TM Lions for the club’s help and support in the Benitachell community. The TM Lions flagship, their fund raising shop, “The Lions Den” held their first fashion show on 21 May in El Martillo café and restaurant. This was kindly sponsored by Avenida boutique in Moraira and was a huge success. 70 fashionistas attended the show and were treated to cava, cake and nibbles whilst watching the very attractive models showcase the haute couture on offer. A raffle raised 240€ and the Lions Den benefitted from a healthy surge in business making the event not only enjoyable but very worthwhile. A huge thank you to Lion Janet and shop volunteer Lorraine for organising the event. If you would like to know more about the Lions or are interested in becoming a Lion please call 96 649 8493 email: peter_john1@hotmail.com or visit our website www.tmlions.com.

HELP News and Events HELP Annual Golf Charity Event is taking place on 8 June. We will be dedicating the day to John Walker, who passed away recently. John used to organise this event for us but sadly suffered a serious Stroke leaving him with no speech and in need of care. His wife Gail has been a volunteer Interpreter on the HELP team for years. John was in care at Fontilles and we hope to use funds from this event towards hospice Care in our new room in Fontilles. Pictured right is Candida (Candy) Wright, our President at Buckingham Palace receiving her MBE. 'What a lovely experience. I received the award from HRH Prince Charles. All of my family were with me and it was a day we will always remember. The ceremony and the organisation was amazing. Everyone was so kind and polite. Prince Charles asked about me coming from Alicante and how lovely it must be and what did I do there. A big thank you to everyone for their support and amazing messages they have sent me. Without the support of Careline Theatre and volunteers in HELP this wouldn't have happened'. Congratulations from us all. Jenny Rich, a truly amazing lady has raised over 2300€ for HELP by skydiving at 70. Jenny raised this money for us along with the Jávea Green Bowls Team she is Captain of and her friends and family. They have all been so kind and generous. What a brave lady. This is one of the items on her list of things to do from 70 onwards. She is a super lady and with lots of plans for more exciting adventures. HELP of Denia and Marina Alta thank Jenny and the Bowls Club for their donation. It's people like this that help us to do what we can to help others. On the 5 May, the Parkinson’s group went on a trip to Elche with 31 people. They visited the Archaeology Museum, which they enjoyed. Afterward they had a lovely lunch and then visited the Moorish Tea Gardens in Crevillente for afternoon tea. It was a lovely sunny day and the group thoroughly enjoyed the trip. HELP of Denia Marina Alta Parkinson’s Support Group meet on the last Monday of every month at the recently refurbished HELP Activity Centre in La Xara at 2.30pm. They give support, latest information and advice on Parkinson’s. For more information please call the co-ordinator on 634 301 677. The Teulada – Moraira Lions Donate Musical Instruments to the Conservatori Music School

Representatives from the Teulada – Moraira Lions club were very pleased to attend the Conservatori music school in Teulada on Thursday 16 May, where they met with the Mayor of Teulada - Moraira, Carlos Bañon Linares, School Director, Fani Bañuls and Conservitori staff to present a donation of musical instruments to the value of 5702€. This is a very significant donation of much needed equipment to the school, and will assist the many local students who attend the school in their musical studies.
