THE SUMMER SOLSTICE
I
've spent the last couple of months talking about taking pictures of the night sky, so it's time for a change. I'll return to photographs in a couple of months with the results of our little competition, you've plenty of time to take some pictures and email them to me.
Midsummer isn't the best time for most amateur astronomers, short nights and murky skies limit viewing a lot. That doesn't mean that it isn't an interesting time of year, far from it, the summer solstice is probably the most ancient astronomical event that humankind has been aware of. Most people will be aware that ancient stone circles were used for many things, including calculating when midsummer was due. What you might not know, is how common these circles used to be, around 1,300 are known about, and probably some sites have been lost. This means that ancient people knew about the importance of the seasons and found a way to work out the important dates. Clever weren't they, I'm not sure how many people today would be able to achieve that, and our ancestors were doing it before the Pyramids were built. So, what exactly is midsummer? We all know that the Earth orbits, goes around the Sun, and that the time it takes is 1 year, that's why other planets have years of different times. This orbit isn't a circle, it's an ellipse, a squashed circle, so that means that at one point in its orbit the Earth is nearer the Sun than at any other time, that, combined with the tilt of Earth on its axis gives us midsummer. That's the important science, there are other things going on, but that's the main bit. Why does this matter? The solstice marks the middle of the seasons, and without seasons we would be in a bit of a mess, in fact we wouldn't be here at all. No seasons means no agriculture as we know it, even wheat might not have evolved. The planet would probably have almost permanent hot and cold areas in bands, everything would be as different as an alien world. The evolution that shaped our plants, animals and us would have been totally different. So, if you are reading this in late June, be glad that we have midsummer, and remember how smart your ancient ancestors were. I'll finish with a couple of things to look out for in July. Venus is prominent just after sunset, with good binoculars you will notice that it's a crescent, like a new moon. If you have a look on the 12 of July, Mars and Venus are close together, with Venus being much the brighter. If you get a clear sky, have a look almost directly overhead as the constellation Cygnus, the swan is plain to see. The brightest star, Deneb marks the head, at the other end, the star Alberio marks the end of the tail. Alberio is an especially beautiful double star, one a reddish giant, and the other is a very yellow giant. A small telescope will reveal the beauty, it's one of the go to sights in the night sky. That's all until next month, stay safe. Baja Astronomy Group

Arts and Crafts Fair in Meliá Villaitana Hotel Meliá Villaitana in Benidorm has added an authentic arts and crafts fair to their programme of cultural activities for the public in general: every Saturday afternoon a group of artisans will set up their stalls in the central square which is built like a typical Mediterranean village, to show and sell their work to guests and visitors from outside the resort. Meliá Villaitana has asked the craft association Amata to organise the event, so that you can be sure that everything in the fair is hand made by the participants. To start with, there will be a dozen or so stalls, each one offering something different, which could be pottery or oil paintings, silver jewellery, embossed leather books and bags, carved wood or beautiful glass animals and jewellery, paper maché or bronze sculptures, hand made soft toys, and lots more. Meliá Villaitana is situated in the Avenida Alcalde Eduardo Zaplana, which is near Terra Mítica. It counts with 4 and 5 star hotels, two golf courses, a spa, bars, restaurants, swimming pools and sports accommodation. You can visit the fair every Saturday afternoon in June from 6pm until midnight (but don't forget the curfew!) and there is plenty of free parking space near the fair. For more information about the fair you can phone Amata (they speak English!) on 639 979 678.

Incorrect Car Insurance - it is not worth the risk I had my second vaccine two weeks ago and sadly, once again I had a severe reaction, actually worse than the first time, and I am still feeling very tired and drained. An issue with Brexit that is now coming to light is that some British Health Insurance companies are no longer covering residents in Spain. If this is the case for you, please call my Head office, where you will get the advice and information you need. Another issue is that there are a large number of British number plated vehicles still on the road in Spain, many of which should be changed to Spanish plates, with residents requiring a Spanish Driving Licence. It has been reported in the press that there are over 1million vehicles recorded in Spain without a current ITV. I understand there are nearly 3 million cars on the roads in Spain, without all the correct paperwork, which represents 8% of all cars registered. The largest issue is cars with a lack of insurance. If the police stop you unless you are properly and legally insured and have all the correct paperwork, you will be fined very heavily. Now we have the new speed restrictions in place for urban areas, throughout the whole of Spain, and the government are promising far more speed checks, the chances of being pulled over have increased dramatically as the police are far more active with this situation and this will result in a large number of fines, possible points on your licence and in some cases, vehicles impounded and this obviously means your paperwork could be checked more frequently. Why people think they can drive uninsured cars, is amazing to me. Hopefully this will help to decrease un-insured cars being driven on the road. The risks involved with not being insured and being involved in an accident, where there are injuries or death – it is just not worth the risk. If you have any concerns regarding your vehicle paperwork, please give us a call.

Last month I downloaded the GVA +Salut app onto my phone after being told that I was in the dark ages by my darling daughter. As someone who can count on one hand the amount of times I have been to the doctors, I have never had the need to use it. If you haven't already, I suggest to you all that you do, as it allows you to request or cancel appointments, see what medication you are taking and what is ready to collect at the chemist. You can also make changes to your contact information. Apart from this it will have information regarding my COVID vaccination when my turn comes. Whilst chatting with the other mums before school, darling daughter looked into the car as the children were 'too quiet'. How adorable, they were reading the Female Focus magazine. The future generation already showing interest in the business. Maybe our new slogan 'Also widely read by men and children'. Have a great month.

Walk Your Way Well

Considering we fancy ourselves as the superior species on this planet it’s quite peculiar how many of us, as individuals, tend to believe we are laden with endless flaws. We know that nobody is perfect but why can't we accept that we are all perfectly imperfect? Do you hear yourself or your friends place too much emphasis on these flaws? To the point that it holds you back in achieving your day-to-day goals or your life dreams. When we break it down it seems completely absurd that a limiting belief, something that is wholly controlled and steered by our very own thoughts, can determine our success and happiness. What do I mean by a limiting belief? Recognise any of these: I’m too old. I’m too fat. I’m too unfit. I’m too stupid. I’m too weak. I’m too shy. I’m too busy. I’m too ugly. I’m too scared. I’m too poor. I’m too boring. I’m too tired. Our list of self-deprecating excuses can appear all too convincing when it comes to finding the willpower or determination we need to tick off our to-do list or chase and embrace our life-long aspirations. The problem with these limiting beliefs is that it is sometimes way too easy to succumb to them rather than take the time required to face and tackle them. Our feelings of doubt or self-ridicule lead us to convince ourselves that we aren't worthy. I’m not worthy to set up that new small business I dream of. I’m not worthy to participate in that sporting event with my fit friends. I’m not worthy to sign up on that dating site with all the beautiful young people! Any of this sound familiar? In May of this year, myself and the amazing Amanda O’Shea, of The Serendipity Experience, organised weekly “Walk & Talk” sessions. We chose beautiful routes and talked ourselves round the pathways and trails with some perfectly imperfect people. The excursions were good for the soul and the body. People shared their eclectic mix of stories and histories. It felt so great to be out in nature. It felt so right to both chat and listen to each other. And the best bit was, with the support of a friendly ear and someone to bounce ideas off, I think each and every one of us walked away feeling slightly more on top of the limiting beliefs we had arrived with. If we had arrived at the meeting point feeling in any way too old, fat, unfit, tired, nervous, shy or boring then we could safety throw this limiting belief in the bin after tackling a two hour stomp with strangers in the glorious outdoors. Walking and talking is an empowering form of exercise for the body and mind that lends itself so well to quashing our limiting beliefs and connecting with others. It forces us to find the time and energy we mistakenly think we lack. It helps us understand we are not as unfit, overweight or weak as we might have once thought. It leads us to the realisation that we really do have something to offer to a conversation either as a listener or a talker and that eases our fears and shyness. The science bit will tell you that any form of exercise gives us a boost of confidence. Walking is simply one of the easiest, most affordable, accessible choices you can make. It’s free and it starts right there on your doorstep. So, if you are feeling something is holding you back and you need some clarity, rather than meeting a friend in a busy bar full of clutter, noise and the numbing effects of alcohol, why not try a different tack. Get together with a pal or a walking group and go for a stretch in the woods or by the beach. The fresh air and space will encourage you to think outside the box. The blood flow will get your brain cells buzzing with confidence. Your limiting beliefs are YOURS to carry or discard. And what better place to dispose of them than into the rolling waves or at the peak of a mountain. Embrace nature, embrace the world we live in and embrace yourself and all YOU have to offer. “Walk & Talk” this month with a friend and see how you feel. Let me know how you get by emailing me at niamhosheehan@hotmail.com. It makes me so happy to see you Walk Your Way Well.

Continuity of Advice – and adviser!
Female Focus Magazine June 2021
Have you been able to maintain the relationship with your adviser? Or are you looking for a new adviser? Many individuals arrive in Spain hoping to maintain the relationship they have with their financial adviser from their previous country of residence. Unfortunately, this is not always possible as it is becoming increasingly difficult for financial advisers to service clients who move to another country. Around the world, regulators and networks are closely monitoring the relationship advisers have with clients and particular importance is being given to where clients receive advice and by who. Clients should receive the most regulated and impartial advice possible, but how is this possible if the adviser is unfamiliar with the legal and tax obligations of the new country of residence? We have picked up many clients over the years who find themselves in a similar situation to the above and one of the most common (and pleasing) pieces of feedback we receive is that our continuity of advice – and importantly adviser - provides them with real peace of mind. In the UK, it is not uncommon to see financial advisers stay at the same company for years, allowing individual investors to build up rapport and trust with the adviser over time. However, the same cannot always be said for Spain with many of the larger organisations having high turnovers of staff, often leaving clients without knowing who to contact. In addition to this being a costly consequence for the company itself, the secondary effect for the clients is that they are frequently asked to wait an avoidable amount of time to receive responses to emails and calls. It is then a guessing game as to who may turn up to see them at the next review meeting! In short, business and adviser continuity can significantly reduce disruptions for clients when dealing with important financial matters. At Logic, our core business objective has always been to provide clients with an unrivalled level of service and this commitment reaped rewards in 2020 when we won the “Excellence in Client Service” award for Europe. One fundamental difference that sets us apart as a family-run business is that our clients get to know us as a family rather than individual advisers working for a particular company. In turn, we view our clients as “our” clients as opposed to his or her clients, which you commonly find in larger companies. This, coupled with the fact we have multiple advisers qualified to UK Diploma status level, allows us to provide an uninterrupted service – one designed to last for generations to come.

This procedure has been popularised by Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, when people started noticing a change in their brows, with them being lifted at the ends, giving them a more exotic look. This is definitely a popular look for summer, but obviously just as much in the other seasons as well. The benefits are that you will have a more lifted brow and it also helps lift mild hooded lids.

At Zen Smile Spa we offer a variety of Aptos threads, enabling us to use the correct thread type for each specific case” says Dr Carbasse. Dr. Carbasse has been performing the fox eye procedure using Aptos threads for 3 years, a non-surgical cosmetic procedure “It is very important that this procedure is that reshapes and lifts the brows for a more cat eye look. Cherry & apricot
slab pie recipe By Prudence Wade, PA. Picture credit: Sam A. Harris/PA
Who can resist a tangy fruit pie with buttery pastry? Cherries and apricots are a match made in heaven, in Ed Smith’s recipe for a luxurious slab pie. Making your own pastry isn’t always the easiest, but your labour will be rewarded with a buttery casing that melts in the mouth. You can still get in on the fun if you don’t have cherry and apricots to hand – any berries that are in season will do.
Cherry and apricot slab pie
Ingredients: (Serves 8) 430g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 200g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 100g icing sugar ½tsp flaky sea salt 1tbsp apple cider vinegar 3tbsp cold milk, plus a little extra as a wash 700g apricots, pitted and quartered 250g cherries, pitted 100g golden caster sugar 120g ground almonds 2tbsp demerara sugar Serve with crème fraîche This works particularly well in a 30 x 20 x 3cm baking tin. Method: 1. Rub together (or use a food processor to pulse) the flour, butter, icing sugar and salt into a breadcrumb-like consistency. Add the vinegar and cold milk, and press into a ball of dough. Natural remedies for every day ailments found in your spice cupboard Before dashing off to the chemist, why not give these natural herbs and spices a try first. Ginger Ginger is a pungent root with aromatic citrus notes and a peppery flavour. Traditionally it has been used to treat nausea, and many studies have shown its efficacy for alleviating sickness caused by pregnancy, chemotherapy and motion sickness. Ginger is also thought to have anti-inflammatory properties and a small study showed a reduction in pain from exercise-induced injury. Pair it with anything Asian. This cuisine uses a lot of ginger as a base with onions and garlic. Ginger also works well in sweet puddings with chocolate. Top tip Ground ginger with lemon makes a very refreshing, spicy tea. pastry into two not-quite-equal pieces, push into rectangles about 3cm thick, then wrap both and refrigerate for at least an hour, ideally longer. 2. The pastry is very buttery and can be tricky to handle, so roll out between two sheets of baking paper: the smaller one so that it’s the same size as your tin (this will be the lid); the other, big enough to line the base and sides; and both to 2-3mm thick. You’ll be able to break off bits that are not in the right shape and place them where they should be as you go. Refrigerate for at least an hour (again). 3. Combine the fruit in a bowl with the caster sugar and leave to macerate. After 20 minutes, add half the ground almonds, stir and set to one side. Butter the baking tin, dust with flour, then line the tin with the larger pastry sheet. Use a knife to trim the pastry so it’s flush with the top of the tin, using the excess to patch up any holes or thinner areas. Sprinkle the base with the remaining ground almonds then tip the filling in, ensuring an even distribution. Brush the edge of the pastry base with milk, then place the lid on top, pressing down firmly to seal the pastry together. Trim any overhang. Brush with milk, then add a liberal sprinkling of demerara sugar. Refrigerate one final time for at least 30 minutes (the pastry needs to be cold and the oven fully to temperature). 4. Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan. Place the baking tin on a larger sheet (to catch any spilled juices) and bake for 45 minutes, until the pastry is hard and golden, with some of the fruit bubbling through. If after 35–40 minutes the pie is looking very bronzed, turn the oven down to 180°C/160°C fan but do keep it in for the full amount of time. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving with big dollops of crème fraîche. Crave: Recipes Arranged By flavour, To Suit Your Mood And Appetite by Ed Smith is published by Quadrille. If you add too much it will leave everything tasting bitter. Sage Sage leaves contain several antioxidant polyphenols and essential oils which, together, have antiseptic, astringent and perspirationinhibiting properties which can relieve menopausal hot flushes and night sweats. Whether or not these actions are due to the presence of plant oestrogens, or an ability to stimulate natural oestrogen production remains unclear. Pair it with meat – it goes really well with pork – or add it to pasta dishes. It has a strong flavour, so use sparingly. Top tip Combine it with other herbs such as basil, thyme and oregano. Parsley Parsley is popularly chewed as a breath freshener, and has been used to aid digestion, as a mild diuretic and urinary antiseptic, to help guard against kidney stones and to treat high blood pressure and menstrual disorders. Pair it with capers in a dressing such as salsa verde. It also works well with fish and white meats. Top tip For a boost of fresh breath, team parsley with mint and chew!

WAKING UP TIRED AND FATIGUED SLEEP APNEA COULD BE THE CAUSE If you wake up still feeling tired, fatigued, with a headache or suffer with snoring then you could have a condition called Sleep Apnea. Being overweight, smoking or drinking too much alcohol can also be a cause. Sleep Apnea is when periods of shallow breathing occur whilst asleep, temporarily blocking the airways causing the brain to become deprived of oxygen. When the brain becomes aware of this, it triggers the body to arouse for long enough to snort to take in air, allowing for normal breathing to resume.
It is important to contact your GP to obtain a diagnosis if you are suffering with on-going symptoms as this could be life threatening if not treated. Available now is a new revolutionary simple sleep test which can diagnose Sleep Apnea. Data is recorded and sent directly to your smartphone whilst sleeping with the use of a sensor attached to your finger tip. If you have a positive diagnosis your GP can advise on further treatment necessary to relieve the Apnea. Often a personalised Mandibular splint crafted by a Dentist can be used to reposition the jaw and tongue to improve the airflow, which in turn will enable a healthy night’s sleep.

Gnocchi with a Spicy Twist!
A classic Italian dish but with a Spice Sister spicy twist! Gnocchi is a dumpling like pasta made from potatoes, flour and egg. Polenta, semolina, stale bread and pumpkin can be used to make gnocchi. Made right these fluffy pillows just melt in the mouth. Sometimes shop bought gnocchi can be a tad chewy, dense and little bland! For the potatoes; the more starchy the better, something like Russets or Desires even King Edwards are great. The potatoes are cooked with their skin on to keep out the moisture and peeled as soon as cool enough to handle. They also can be baked on a bed of rock salt for about an hour. Apart from the seasoning of salt and pepper the rest of the spices are optional. Half a sachet of Curry On Cooking curry kit works really well, our favourite is Bombay Potato! Gnocchi can be served with a simple sage and butter sauce, just butter and cheese or a fiery spicy sauce. Recipe Ingredients
Add the potatoes to a large pan of salted water. Boil until cooked. Once boiled, drain and as soon as they are cool enough to handle, peel the skin and push the potatoes through a fine sieve or a potato ricer on to a clean surface or large chopping board.
4 large potatoes 1tsp cumin seeds 1tsp nigella seeds 1tsp garam masala ½ tsp black pepper ½ salt 1 egg whisked 130g flour - extra for dusting
Add the spices to the potatoes, mix well. Create a well in the middle add the egg; gently push the potato mixture into the egg.
Time
To create the traditional shaped ribbed look, dust with flour and gently roll along the tines / the back of a fork.
Prep 40-45 mins Cook 5 mins Serves 4 A Bombay Potato Kit or any Curry On Cooking spice kit can be used to replace the spices in this recipe or the spices from The Cook from Scratch Masala Dabba available from; https://www.curryoncooking.com/buy-now/ indian-spice-tin-masala-dabba-with-spices/
Sprinkle on half the flour and gently mix into the mixture, keep adding flour until it comes together into a dough. How much flour will depend on the potatoes – you might use all of it or have some remaining. Knead gently until it becomes pliable but avoid over working the dough. Divide the dough into 4 equal parts. Dust the surface with flour and with the palm of your hand roll each piece into a sausage shape of about 2cm thick. Cut into about 3cm pieces.
In a large pan of salted boiling water cook the gnocchi in small batches, avoid overcrowding the pan, stir, cook for 2-3 minutes, wait for them to float to the top. Use a slotted spoon to scoop them out and drain. Tip the cooked gnocchi in to a sauce or simply toss in butter and grated cheese before serving. ● Due to Brexit, we are really struggling to get the curry kits over to Spain. Until this is rectified, we are posting the curry kits from the UK. Please email us your order and we will work out the postal charges and let you know. We are still offering lessons and have the masala dabbas (spice tins) available to buy in Spain. Learn to cook curry from scratch, treat yourself or loved one to a masala dabba and with all the spices cook up a storm with the Spice Sisters. Please email keepcalm@curryoncooking.com.

THE THINKING CHAIR,
IS IT A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OR IS IT HARMFUL?
The thinking chair is something that is often used to make children realise what they have done, but, is it effective or harmful to children? We as adults sometimes have days when we’re worried about something, can’t concentrate, we think “I would have been better if I had not got out of bed today”. We just cannot get anything right, are unable to concentrate at work, at home, with our family and sometimes we don't even feel like being talked to. These days, our emotions trap us, they don’t allow us to concentrate, to focus on the tasks we have to do that day, we feel blocked and very few things go well for us. Well, if this happens to us as adults, imagine what it’s like for kids, those little people who have not yet learned all the things they need for their day to day life. When mum, dad, the babysitter or the nursery school teachers tell them to go to The Thinking Chair and think about what they have done wrong, in their few years of life, do you think they are prepared to come up with a conclusion or better yet, a solution to the problem that they themselves have created? If they are forced to think about the problem, and what they have done wrong, do you think they will find the solution or will they end up getting nervous thinking endlessly about what has happened and possibly becoming confused, feeling blocked, frustrated and just getting more and more nervous and behaving worse? Please do not send the children to The Thinking Chair anymore or to the corner, that spot of the classroom or even that area inside the house, the children will associate it with something negative and they will never want to go there, getting to the point of not understanding if they are there because they have to go through that area, or it is because they have to think, or because they are being punished. We can even create a phobia, such as not wanting to go alone down the hall, or not going to their room and not wanting to sleep there because they have associated that place in the house with a bad moment. In the next post, I will explain the proper way to use The Thinking Chair or in terms of psychology, “How to take a time out”. ● If you are having any issues with your children or grandchildren etc, that you don't quite know how to resolve, if you wish, contact me at info@davidcasadocoach.com and I will cover these topics in future articles, or send them directly to the magazine at editor@femalefocusonline.com. o you own property in Spain which you don’t live in full-time? You can earn money renting out your home to holidaymakers, for example, a 3-bedroom villa in Jávea can achieve a gross rental income of between €1,000 - €1,500 a week in August, after agency fees. For British owners who aren’t residents in Spain and who must abide by the 90/180 Schengen Visa Rule, this could solve the problem of what to do with their property when they cannot use it. “It’s also better for the property to be occupied and managed by renting out while owners aren’t here,” said Horizon Holiday Villas in Jávea. Do I need a licence to rent my property in Spain? Short term and holiday lets in Spain need both a tourism licence and an urban compatibility certificate, which is issued by the town hall. Horizon Holiday Villas offers a tourist licensing service for both. Advantages of using a holiday rental company in Spain By letting your property through Horizon Holiday Villas you have the benefits of their vast experience in the hospitality industry, and holiday rentals in Spain. Their unique concierge service to guests offers excursions, beauty treatments, restaurant reservations, shopping, wine deliveries, car or boat hire, airport transfers, and private caterers. It is this attention to detail which enables the company to get many repeat bookings. Indeed, more properties are needed to meet the demand of holidaymakers. The simple thing is we have every artificial grass product available for your needs. I often get asked questions about the ecological impact of our artificial grasses and there is a simple answer, our grasses are manufactured here in Spain to stringent EU Health and Safety laws, meaning that the product and the people who make it are looked after, the product is 100% recyclable, 100% non toxic. Many people often don’t think about the other advantages of artificial grass. You don’t have to waste water on it, something that is becoming a global commodity, it's also the fact that your gardener now doesn't have to drive to your house every week in their van (polluting the atmosphere). They don't have to use their lawn mower (polluting the atmosphere) and then when your natural grass doesn't look good or gets a nasty root eating pest, they don't have to use chemicals that are harmful to the wider eco system and local environment. Artificial Grass may not be what everyone wants, but it really should be. I think I can convert anyone with the benefits, ease and the fact it looks great immediately after being laid and for years to come. ● For more information please give us a call on 696 283 704, email info@charlesworthgardens.com or visit www.charlesworthgardens.com, www.artificial-grass-spain.com and www.floresgardencentre.com.

The Arts Society Marina Alta is ZOOMing again live & online for our final presentation before the summer break! Or is it? Watch this space. Our 5th ZOOM lecture, live from the UK will be on Thursday 3 June. The ZOOM waiting room opens at 10:45 for registered members and guests, the lecture begins at 11:00 promptly.
John Ericsson: Art inspired by Wine John Ericsson was formerly a lecturer at the University of Bath where he was Director of Studies in the School of Education with responsibility for the professional development of teachers. He has worked extensively overseas as an educational consultant and this has given him the opportunity to give lectures and presentations at conferences all over the world. Over the last decade he has been a popular speaker on the Arts Society circuit in the UK and Europe as well as a frequent visitor to the societies in Australia and New Zealand. Art Inspired by Wine In this lively presentation John shares his knowledge and enthusiasm for wine and the contribution that ‘wine art’ makes to our colourful world. Wine can be a civilising influence upon us and it is made to be shared and enjoyed. As a consequence there are numerous wonderful paintings of wine being made and wine being drunk in celebration but it also lends itself to wicked cartoons and striking posters. In addition we shall examine wine labels from around the world which now display such style and creativity. We will examine some of the myths and rituals that have grown up around wine and perhaps debunk some of them! Many 'imbibers' seek out attractive accessories, such as corkscrews, decanters and wine glasses, many of which can be regarded as antiques. Some modern decanters may be regarded as pieces of sculpture in their own right. For more information on our lectures and membership and to join our ZOOM presentation please visit our website www.marinaaltaarts.com or contact our programme secretary tasma.programme@gmail.com. TROUPERS By Benny Davis
"Open Sesame" boomed the voice of Abanazer. A great boulder blocking the entrance to the magic cave, slowly started to grind aside. Firmly grasping his nephew's hand, the wicked uncle Abanazer, led Aladdin towards the opening, eager to find the hidden treasure. On the edge of their seats, the audience, totally emersed in the plot, were left completely nonplussed when instead of a dark, bat infested, cobwebbed interior, as described in the programme, owing to a lighting malfunction, they faced a set brighter than Benidorm beach on a midsummer’s day. After a moment’s hesitation, like a true professional, Aladdin stepped into the cave and delivered his well-rehearsed, now immortal line, "It's dark in here uncle". Just one example of the many obstacles the Quesada based theatre company, Studio 32, have endured since their formation in 2013, but they are not alone. Stage managers, regardless of whether they are members of the RSC or Tumble-on-Marsh amateur dramatic society, always face an inevitable battle with inanimate objects and technical equipment that always seem have minds of their own, but hey! That's the magic of live theatre, anything can happen, and usually does. Over the last few years, Studio 32 have focused their creative ability on staging fully blown musicals including, `Chicago´, `Fiddler On The Roof´, `Oklahoma´,` White Christmas´ and their current production, `South Pacific´. During that time, they have built a solid base of state-of-the-art equipment, and amassed a fully stocked wardrobe, capable of dressing anything from a period drama to the latest Hollywood extravaganza. They are also blessed with a mix of young and older membership with 60/70 talented actors and technicians, all ready to `step into the breach´ at a moment’s notice. The musical, `Anything Goes´ was a prime example when the leading man was involved in an accident just two weeks prior to curtain-up. The part was recast, lines hastily learnt, night and day rehearsals, but the `understudy´ not only saved the day but was rewarded with thunderous applause during the final curtain call. To sum up, Studio 32 are a credit to amdram here in Spain, they work hard to obtain as close to professional standards as possible, but always retain a close personal relationship through fun social events, and in doing so, have raised over 35,500 euros for local charities. MORAIRA CARITAS FOOD BANK FOR LENT
People traditionally try to give something up during the period of lent. This year, La Fustera Church decided to do something different - ‘Don’t Give Up – Give Away’. As the name suggests, members of the congregation were encouraged to donate an item of food each day during lent and collectively we assembled a car full of basic foodstuffs, toiletries and the odd treat ready to present to Caritas in Moraira. John Evans – the Caritas liaison for this initiative – came along to collect the food and was amazed by the generosity of the congregation. Our pastor, Father Jim Booker, blessed the food, praying that all who received these donations would get a sense of the love in which they had been given. Caritas in Moraira do fabulous work helping families who are struggling to make ends meet in these challenging times. John explained that there are currently 70 families – so nearly 300 mouths – that they are feeding via fortnightly food parcels. Caritas have collecting boxes in the 2 large Pepe La Sal stores – the one on the Moraira to Calpe Road and the one on the Moraira to Teulada Road. Please think about donating a few items if you are shopping there. The families in need in our area would really benefit from this. La Fustera Church is part of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chapliancy. Communion services are held each Sunday using a service very familiar to any who have worshipped in the Church of England in the UK. You will receive a warm welcome at any of our services. For details of how to find us and also the details of other churches and services in this area, please visit the website www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org.

Volunteers raise funds for telephone friendship service
Age in Spain's telephone friendship service, Friendline, matches older English-speaking people in Spain with trained volunteers so that they can have a regular weekly call about... anything. Recently, the volunteers held a competition between themselves to raise funds to support the service. One of the activities was a Pet Photography Competition, with the winning pet owner receiving a portrait painted by A Coruña based artist (and Friendline volunteer) Marisa Hunter-Toms. The competition was won by Emma Rebbetts who lives in Xativa and who received a portrait of rescued French bulldog, Shelly. Overall, the Friendline volunteers raised 1,279.41€ to support this important service. What is Friendline? Friendline is a free telephone friendship service to connect older people living in Spain with volunteers, through a weekly phone call with someone with similar interests. In a world where new technology often leaves some of us behind or makes us feel left out, Friendline offers people the joy of a friendly conversation. Director of Age in Spain, Helen Weir, said: “Friendship is the best first line of defence against so many of the problems older people can face. As we get older there is a real risk that our worlds get smaller and we have less chance to make friends. Friendline is a way to do something positive about that. It really doesn’t matter what the conversation is about, it might be sport, ballroom dancing or your garden. What Friendline offers is a human connection with all its benefits. Friendline can be a lifeline”. If you are an older person living in Spain and you are interested in receiving Friendline calls, you can find out more at www.ageinspain.org/friendline, by calling Age in Spain on +34 93 220 9334 or by emailing friendline@ageinspain.org. You can also refer a family member or friend living in Spain to Friendline if you think they would appreciate a regular call. Friendline is a free service.
