Specsavers Ópticas and the Lions Club renew their agreement The nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain have renewed their commitment to support the Lions Clubs in their region. All stores are collecting used glasses and have made agreements with their local Lions groups to distribute those glasses to people who need them in developing countries. Specsavers Ópticas and the Lions Club share the same goal – to end avoidable blindness and improve people’s vision, by ensuring everyone has access to glasses. On the Costa Blanca, Specsavers Ópticas stores in Jávea and Calpe are working with the Calpe and Benissa Lions, to collect unwanted glasses and put them to good use. Specsavers Ópticas customers donate their old glasses at the store and these are picked up by Lions Club volunteers, then sent to the Melvin Jones glasses recycling centre near Alicante. At the centre, they clean, repair and sort the glasses into the different prescriptions and then send the glasses to where they can be used again. They send around 100,000 pairs of glasses to over 30 countries each year, predominantly in Latin America, Africa and Asia. “We take it for granted that we can correct our vision with a pair of glasses if our sight is bad,” explained Louise Stone Director of Specsavers Ópticas Jávea and Calpe, “but in many parts of the world people don’t have that luxury and poor eye sight can make life very difficult for vulnerable people. Having a pair of glasses can really change someone’s life, by allowing them to return to work, or to continue their studies. This is why we are delighted to renew our agreement with the Lions Club to donate unwanted glasses and put them to good use”. Carole Saunders from Calpe and Benissa Lions picked up ten boxes of glasses from Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe. During this collection, the Directors and the charity pledged to work together to ensure more people in developing countries have access to the glasses they so desperately need. Carole Saunders from Calpe and Benissa Lions commented, “Collaborations like these are so important to improve the life of millions of people, who are unable to lead a full life, as they can’t afford a pair of glasses. We aim to collect as many glasses as possible and work alongside charities and groups who make sure the glasses reach those who really need them”. You can drop your unwanted glasses off at Specsavers Ópticas stores in Calpe and Jávea. Find your nearest store by visiting www.specsavers.es.

I don't know how it is in your house but in ours painting comes under housework, and as such is my job. I have tried to explain to him that as he does a lot of the cleaning, washing up and cooking then surely he does housework and therefore can do painting. Apparently not! And when he does 'help' under duress he makes such a mess it would have been easier if I had just done it myself in the first place. I am not very adventurous when it comes to colour on the walls and therefore most of our walls are white, having said that it is not a bad thing as little people's sticky finger marks are easily painted out without too much bother. BUT darling daughter has had one of her bedroom walls wallpapered and I now have wallpaper envy. It looks fabulous, and as we are planning repainting the lounge I am wondering how hard it can be! As neither of us are very patient with that kind of job I feel white paint may be the end result! By the time of our next magazine Brexit should have taken place and at least then we should know where we stand as UK nationals living here in Spain. Opportunities to ask questions about Brexit Continuing the series of events for UK nationals on Living in Spain and Brexit, British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris and her team will be updating residents with the latest information on Brexit and what this means for UK nationals living in Spain at a series of events in Valencia and Murcia. Over 2,000 people have attended events in the region so far, having their questions answered on topics including residency, healthcare and tax. A range of experts, charities and neighbourhood support groups are represented at each event, forming a kind of “surgery” to make sure everyone gets the chance to ask their question to the right person. BREXPATS IN SPAIN will also be providing an update on the current position regarding their work to defend the rights of British citizens in Spain at each event. Bremain in Spain and Brexpats Hear our Voice will also attend the Valencia event. Event details: La Manga: Wednesday 6 March (11am) at the La Manga Golf Club, Urbanization La Manga Club, 30389 Cartagena, Murcia Calasparra: Wednesday 6 March (5pm) at the Restaurante Don Gomez, Carretera Calasparra km 12, Calasparra, Murcia Lliber: Wednesday 13 March (12pm) at the Centro la Pau, Lliber There is no need to register beforehand. You do not have to be resident in any of the above locations to attend the events, but if you have specific questions about the padrón it might be helpful to attend an event where you live if possible. British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said: "Everyone who wants to speak to one of us individually will have the opportunity to do so. If you haven’t yet been to one of the events and are unclear about your situation regarding residency in Spain or how your situation in Spain might change after Brexit, please do come along to one of the remaining dates.” These events are part of an ongoing programme of outreach and events being held across the country, details of which will be available on our Brits in Spain social media channels and in English language media. Advice for UK citizens living in Spain can be found here: gov.uk/living-in-spain. Hoping for the Best, Planning for the Worst Beware Brexit is coming! Less than 30 days to go to the planned deadline on Brexit, much could happen in the remaining time!

by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain

Important advice on your finances. 1 Investments: Many Internationals have their investments in popular Spanish complaint bonds, these are good for tax efficiency, IHT and growth. Post Brexit I have been advised that some of the assets in these bonds could become toxic and need to be sold - they will be funds. Selling in a downward market can lose you money, so it’s important to seek advice on which funds the bond holders are concerned about and if it affects your investments. Action: I offer a no cost review to update you on your options, always worth a conversation. 2 Pensions: Living in Spain holding personal or company pensions in the UK and not drawing down the lump sum or income could become subject to a 25% tax from HRMC post BREXIT deal or no deal! This tax applies today to transfers from the UK to residents living outside the EC and, call me old-fashioned, but it is the easiest tax to apply to Expats once the UK has left the EC. Time is tight on transfers to avoid this tax if applied, as Trustee’s in the UK are diligent on the paperwork. Action: Speak to me, again at no cost and see if this could affect your frozen pensions from the UK, avoidance of 25% can be a lot of money, after all you paid too much tax already! deVere Group is expanding and recruiting in this location, see the advert below. deVere Group has 80,000 clients, 10 Billon Sterling under management and operated in 107 countries last year, has 4 large offices in Spain and specialist advice areas beyond investments and pensions in: UK Tax, UK Property purchase and Company employee advice (we work with Boots, Morrisons, BBC and many more) so are not short on experts! We win a lot of awards as well! I am very happy to take either a telephone call or an email to stop you being concerned about your investments or pensions. For more information, contact me on 610 822 484 or email steve.iball@devere-spain.es.

Six documents needed to sell your property in Spain We say in Spanish: “everything is moving”. And it’s true. By looking backwards we’ll see almost nothing is the same as in the past.

So you might be ready to sell your property in Spain because of a life change: illness, loss of a relative, or simply because you are not happy with your property, the neighbourhood or the area anymore. Therefore, we’ve created a list of six necessary documents you should keep in mind for when you sell your property. 1. NIE number certificate. This may seem too obvious, but it’s a very important document required to sell your property. You obtained your NIE to buy property. If you have lost your NIE document you must get a duplicate copy. 2. Utility bills. Your water and electricity accounts will need to be changed into the buyer’s name; otherwise, you will remain the person responsible for any accumulated services. So, it’s important that you present them so that your solicitor can organise the changes with the buyer’s representative. 3. Community fees. If your property is part of a community of property owners you will need a certificate from the administrator which states that there are no outstanding debts on your property. 4. Energy certificate. This certificate is mandatory. It shows the property’s category in terms of energy efficiency. This certificate must be obtained before the property is officially advertised for sale. 5. Habitation certificate. It’s a document which confirms the fulfilment of minimum requirements established by the local town hall declaring that the property is habitable. This document is required to change the utility bills into the buyer’s name. 6. Certificate of fiscal residence. If you are still registered for income tax abroad but spend more than 183 days in Spain, this certificate will avoid the retention of the 3% which will be applied over the sale price. A certificate of fiscal residence can be obtained from the Spanish tax authorities. It may look like a lot of documentation, but at Sun Lawyers we can help you reduce the stress of the legal process involved in the sale of your property. Have you got any questions? Please give us a call on 96 647 1898 or send us an email at admin@sun-lawyers.com. We’ll be waiting to hear from you!

Bespoke Funeral Insurance Death is always a difficult subject to discuss, but when living in Spain, it becomes far more important to think about the future and how to make this stressful time easier for your loved ones. With this in mind, at Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, we are delighted to introduce a Bespoke Funeral insurance package, at an astonishing starting premium from â‚Ź70 for the whole year. For the Spanish, funeral insurance is more or less a necessity and is taken from a very early age. Funerals are very expensive and will put an enormous amount of pressure on your loved ones. Before any funeral arrangements can be made, it is necessary to have a NIE number, your bank accounts may be frozen and the paperwork completed, which all makes it far more difficult for your family. Funerals plans can be made in one payment or a deposit and the remainder paid over 5 years, with interest added. This option is an excellent choice. However, it may not be the correct time financially to commit to this option. You may have an investment coming to you in the future but what if something happens before then, or your income may not be able to stretch this far? Liberty Seguros have introduced an amazing funeral insurance, a bespoke package that gives you the choices to tailor make the insurance to your needs and those of your family, at an affordable yearly premium. There is just no reason not to come and talk to my consultants now, for the best way for you to protect your loved ones. If you wish to ensure that your family has more financial protection on your death, Bespoke Life Insurance is a further option. This also can cover the cost of the funeral and provide the necessary funds to cover other outstanding costs. Another excellent option from Liberty Seguros is the Accident Plan, which protects you in so many ways. For more information contact one of my specialists on 965 579 372, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

The rain in Spain …means damp problems! Whilst we are fortunate on the Costa Blanca to have an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, when it rains…it rains a lot! With our hot summers and heavy rainfalls these extremes in weather are the cause of many a crack in roof tiles and walls resulting in damp seeping into our homes. Unlike our homes in northern Europe, most Spanish homes do not have damp course fitted as standard and therefore, rising damp and condensation build up. Coupled with poorly fitted windows or low quality windows with hot air conditioning; this combination only adds to making homes feel more humid and breeds mould. Plus insufficient or no ventilation in the walls merely adds to the problem. This creates two problems – one, damage to a property through rising damp, two - comfort and health issues through the build-up of condensation. When you open up a room do you smell the mustiness of damp walls? Flaking plaster, bubbling paint work and spots of mould make rooms impossible to live in. These symptoms are the result of years of damp ingress and are the result of Rising Damp. At this point it would be wrong to treat these damaged areas "cosmetically" with only mortar and paint, and have to put up with a very unhealthy living climate with higher energy costs. This stage of damage requires thorough corrective action in order to prevent total dilapidation of these sections of the house. Secondly, condensation is a major cause of dampness in buildings and is nearly always associated with black mould. Health problems associated with black mould include allergic reactions, asthma episodes, irritations of the eye, nose and throat, sinus congestion, and other respiratory problems. The problem arises because of high relative humidity, a lack of natural ventilation and in most cases, cold external walls. Sometimes it's possible to reduce humidity by regulating activities like drying clothes outdoors. Ventilation can be provided via trickle vents which can often eliminate condensation issues. Walls can be insulated without disturbing the occupants with an exterior insulation. So, if you are in the process of buying and there is evidence of damp or you have discovered some damp in your home, there is no need to panic as once the cause is established; there are a number of solutions… Just give M3BT a call on 618 084 156 or visit www.m3bt.com.

With such a wide range of products, it’s possible to dress every room in your house without breaking the bank. Couple this with friendly service and professional advice and you can start to see why Leo’s has been so successful. Beds have always been part of Leo’s range. After careful research, they focussed on stocking top international brands plus well known British brands such as Dunlopillo, Silent Night and Serta. These offer great quality at reasonable prices. The new showroom showcases many of the beds, and of course bedding, pillows, duvets, sheet and covers, and towels. How to love your skin after the menopause Results achieved with HIFU

Although life expectancy of women continues to rise, surprisingly the average age of the menopause has changed relatively little since prehistoric times. This means that women spend most of their adult lives living with skin problems associated with the perimenopause (from 40), the menopause itself and the post menopause.

Results achieved with PEELING

Results achieved with CRYOPEN

The fall in oestrogen levels and hormone imbalance that occurs after the menopause can lead to an array of undesirable visible effects on the skin:- Loss of skin elasticity which leads to sagging. - Loss of moisture and thickness which leads to fine lines and wrinkles. - Redness and broken blood vessels. - Facial hair on the chin and upper lip. - Uneven skin pigmentation. - Appearance of skin tags and warts. These effects drive most women to despair on looking in the mirror, but all these alien changes can be treated. A wide variety of different methods exist and usually a combination of these are required to achieve a youthful complexion once again. Whether it is CryoPen, ND Yag Laser, IPL medical photorejuvenation, micro hyaluronic acid injections, a medium peel or HIFU we will get to you to love your skin again, Since the skin’s worst enemy is the sun, the best time of year to treat it is now before the sun’s rays become harmful. The students attend summer school in Benissa from 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and there are daily buses from several areas to and from the school. Several of the families have come back year after year, and really look forward to welcoming the students into their homes, all types of families are considered, retired people, families with or without children of their own. Everyone brings something different to the programme. Debra Miller is the British Family Coordinator, and is on call the whole time that the students are attending the programme. Debra has been with the company since the very beginning, and understands all the pros and cons of having students as she used to host them herself. All prospective families are visited by Debra, this is so that she can meet the families and get to know them a little before students are placed with them. The purpose of this programme is to help Spanish children practice their English language skills. If you do not speak Spanish this is fine, as they need to speak English while in your home. Revitalise your skin with Dermaroller Do you buy fancy expensive rejuvenating face creams which at best have very little true effect? Then welcome to DERMAROLLER-collagen induction therapy by microneedling. Now is the time of year for skin rejuvenation, when the weather is cooler and sun-damage is minimal. From the age of about 35 onwards (in some people before) the quality of our skin starts to diminish due to the effects of - sun - lifestyle - flagging hormones Dermaroller is with-out doubt very effective at countering this trend. Natural and safe, it is effective at stimulating your own skin’s power of rejuvenation thus increasing production of - new cells in general - stem cells - tiny blood vessels - collagen in what is effectively a global skin reconstruction / renewal process. Dermaroller is also used for acne scars, pigmentation, scars, aged skin, stretch marks, large pores and fatty skin. During the treatment the skin is rolled excessively with the microneedle roller, after applying a surface anaesthetic gel for 45mins. The fine Dermaroller needles are designed to give maximum stimulus at the optimum depth. Deeper skin peels are now somewhat contraindicated as they attempt to destroy the outer most protective layer of your skin. In contrast the Dermaroller stimulates a highly constructive influence from the deeper layer of skin which later shows on the skin surface. The first Dermaroller treatment can achieve a 40% skin improvement and subsequent treatments 20%. A maintenance session can be done yearly.

In addition, it can be complemented with mesotherapy for a greater effect – the mesotherapy will add essentials factors and hyaluronic acid which supplies the skin with rejuvenating nutrients. It goes without saying that sun protection, a healthy diet/ lifestyle, and safe natural hormone supplements where appropriate, all have their own positive effects on the skin. Be warned… Cheap copies of Dermaroller can be found but they can and may cause scaring due to poor /inadequate quality design and orientation of the needles. Dermaroller is a medical skin treatment and should be undertaken professionally with top quality Dermarollers. Visit http://www.original-dermaroller.de and read more about this superb skin treatment. Getting in Shape for Surgery In virtually all areas of life you show up prepared. You train for a 5K run. You run, swim, and cycle for months before a triathlon. You study for a maths or history test. Dr Poole in Jávea is a specialist Surgeon with a Master's Degree in Aesthetic Surgery who has performed countless procedures. This month he tells us why it is important to get prepared for surgery. The message is very simple. Patients need to get themselves ready and be in the best physical shape they can manage before undergoing any kind of operation. This will boost the chances of a good outcome of the procedure, and also achieve a quicker recovery period. There are 4 main areas that patients should concentrate on in the weeks leading up to a procedure: 1) Exercise. Some patients may need to lose a bit of weight, others don't. Getting well and fitter before any surgery can improve a surgical patient’s recovery time considerably. 2) Breathing. A 20 minute walk every day is highly recommended. Fresh air in the lungs does wonders and will help to relax the patient and relieve stress before their surgery. Strong lungs are always an advantage when having surgery. 3) Nutrition. Patients should eat nutritiously in the weeks leading up to their operation. Plenty of fruit and vegetables, and luckily we are in the perfect country to achieve this. 4) Avoid Toxins. Patients should really try to quit smoking before their surgery. Alcohol consumption should be limited, and any regular medication should be carefully moderated.

Female Focus March 2019

Dr Poole doesn't usually have any problems convincing his patients to cooperate because they obviously want the best results. He continues, “The weeks after the operation are also vitally important, for example, the skin recovery period can be as much as 90 days, so it simply isn't the case that everything is over and done when the last stitch is taken out. The doctor will have done his job, but the outcome is also down to the patient”. So, as well as continuing to eat nutritiously and avoid toxins after the surgery, it is important to: 5) Never miss the follow-up appointments. They are undertaken for a reason, to check on progress, alter medication etc. The surgery results could be compromised if the patient fails to follow them through. 6) In case of doubt always ask. If something seems wrong, then ask. Much better to understand and to be prepared in advance in order to make the surgery and recovery a success. Dr Ignacio Poole is also a certified family doctor/GP. If there is anything about your health that concerns you, or about your appearance that bothers you, however small, then there is an invitation waiting for you. Feel free to call into the clinic and find out about all the different services and procedures - don’t forget that your first consultative visit is completely free. Undercover top dog tips from Aspe If you've been into KRU in JĂĄvea lately or seen our new advert, you will have noticed a miniature addition to the team. I'm Aspe and I'm the Yorkie đ&#x;?ž !

I've been observing the KRU team at work and thought I'd let you know what I've found out. Top tip #1 in Beauty: The lovely Kina advises everyone to take off their make up before bed, and to cleanse the skin and moisturise, this helps to prevent wrinkles. It hydrates the skin and rejuvenates the skin cells, resulting in a glowing complexion. Top tip #2 in Beauty: Cleansing and removing mascara is just as important, this helps to avoid build-up and guard against mites, Demodex are eyelash mites that typically live in the follicles of the eyelashes, they can be passed from person to person, so my second top dog tip is; Do not share mascaras! Top tip #3 in Beauty: Kina also says you must exfoliate twice a week to remove dead skin, this again helps to rejuvenate the skin leaving a glossy glow! Over the other side of the salon I've been watching what the hairdressing girls, Jo, Lisa and Elisa have been up to‌ Top tip #4 in Hair: Did you know that two shampoos are better than one? The first takes out excess build-up of product and dirt, so don’t be disappointed if your shampoo doesn't lather first time, it’s just doing its job! The second shampoo should always lather, this is a sign to show that the first shampoo has worked!!! (I could do with a shampoo but don’t tell my mum!) Top tip #5 in Hair: Never use a brush to comb wet hair after washing; this can cause split hair and ends. Top tip #6 in Hair: Find your perfect hairdresser! Your perfect hairdresser will listen to your needs, then advise where necessary! Most hairdressing disasters occur when the client has not been properly listened to at the consultation. Sadly there are lots of hairdressers that do what they think rather than take the time to listen to the client’s needs! At KRU we listen. (Except me, I'm busy chewing toys.) To make an appointment with any of the team, call 96 646 3970 or see our advert on the horoscopes page – I’m in it! Love Aspe đ&#x;?ž

Female Focus March 2019

www.femalefocusonline.com of the internet and modern technology there’s been a sharp rise in ‘romance scams’. Action Fraud, the police crime reporting centre back in the UK, decided to release the latest statistics concerning ‘scams of the heart’ to coincide with Valentine’s Day; victims lost more than £50 million over 2018 and it is feared many more are out there with broken hearts and too embarrassed to admit they have been fleeced. Last year, there were a whopping 4,555 reports made to Action Fraud – including some from this part of the world – up 27% on 2017 and a police spokesman revealed the total was thought to be much higher as “many victims are thought to have suffered in secret”. And the average age of a victim is 50 and, sadly, 63% of losers are women; they also lose twice as much to the scam. The average loss per case is an eye-watering £11,145. Commander Karen Baxter, head of the City of London Police economic crime department said fraudsters trick victims into sending them money or gathered enough information to steal their identity. She warned people using dating websites in search of romance or friendship should be careful not to take everything at face value and get caught out by social media profiles; simply by trusting people too soon. “As cases of romance fraud increase each year, so too does the cost to victims, both emotionally and financially,” she said. “The emotional damage of falling victim to romance fraud can often be far more difficult to come to terms with.” In the words of Hill Street Blues: Be careful out there. Action Fraud said criminals trawl through profiles to piece together information about wealth and lifestyle to manipulate their targets. They cover their tracks by masking IP addresses and using unregistered phones; police advise people never to send money to someone they have not met and to be careful about posting information that could be used by scammers to manipulate or bribe.

Happy birthday APASA JAVEA-BASED animal charity APASA staged a ‘bit of a do’ to mark a special anniversary on the Costa Blanca, with 20 candles on the cake and around 200 dogs currently in its care. Formed by expats and officially endorsed to manage the town hall’s obligation to run a pound for strays, it was named after San Antonio, patron saint of animals – the full name is a bit of a mouthful: the Asociación Protectora de Animales de San Antonio. And the statistics speak for themselves. Across its 20 years, APASA has welcomed around 11,000 dogs through its gates: 5,560 have been adopted and gone to new families; 3,961 have been reunited with their owners – because of a flood during the great storm of 2007, figures are approximate as records were destroyed (but dogs were saved). Congratulations to the charity on passing such an important milestone, no wonder tails are wagging amongst an international cast of dedicated volunteers.

Election fever hits Spain SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has named Sunday April 28 as the day for a snap general election after failing to get his budget through parliament in Madrid – the third national ballot in four years. The minority socialist government has clung to power for more than eight months with the help of a ‘confidence and supply’ agreement with smaller regional parties, often with competing interests, a bit like back in the UK, with Tory souls dependent on

FF - your healthy magazine

the backing of the Democratic Unionist Party. However, despite an early promise to hold elections after coming to power last June, Mr Sanchez has managed to stay at the helm of the good ship Spain. The failure to get the financial Bill through came amidst rebellion by Catalonia politicians accusing the government of refusing to discuss independence and growing number of demonstrations in the capital demanding a ballot. The announcement rules out a ‘super Sunday’ of voting; the merry month of May already sees local town hall elections, regional and European elections.

Crackerjack: classic kids’ TV is back! IT’S Friday, it’s five to five and it’s Crackerjack! The classic children’s television show returns after a 35-year gap promising to be ‘must see’ viewing for “today’s connected generation”. The madcap show is back on Fridays with duo Sam and Mark presenting – it originally ran from 1955 until 1984 and the chaos has been hosted by the likes of Eamonn Andrews, Leslie Crowther, Michael Aspel, Ed Stewart and Stu Francis; all ready to hand over the prized Crackerjack pencils. Hopefully, it will once again be essential viewing. Back in the day Crackerjack and Happy Days were the only things on the box worth skiving uni lectures for (sorry mum and dad) – now can we have the return of the anarchic Saturday morning hangover cure also known as Tizwas?

Aloo Gobi – Potato and Cauliflower Curry After falling out of favour the humble cauliflower has once again become fashionable with supermarkets and restaurants now offering cauli-rice, cauliflower steaks and cauliflower pizza crust. According to Mark Twain he’s quoted as saying ‘Cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education’. This always makes me chuckle as cauliflower curry is one of the most common and basic dishes in the Punjabi repertoire. Potatoes form the backbone of this humble dish. It’s best to add the potatoes and briefly cook them before adding the cauliflower. Most people tend to discard the stem and leaves and just use the florets – try to use as much of the cauliflower, as the stem and outer leaves chopped finely add another dimension to the dish. Ingredients 3 tablespoons oil 1 cauliflower, cut into florets 2 medium potatoes, bite size chunks 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 medium onions, chopped 1 inch ginger, chopped ½ canned chopped tomatoes

1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon turmeric ½ teaspoon black pepper teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon garam masala 2 chopped chillies (optional) Chopped fresh coriander to garnish

Recipe - In a large saucepan heat the oil to a medium heat; once hot, add the cumin seeds, cook until they start to crack and turn a golden colour. Add the onion and garlic cook for about five minutes or until golden brown. - Add the fresh ginger, along with the tinned tomatoes. Mix and cook for a couple of minutes. - Next stir in the spices, turmeric, salt, garam masala, black pepper and fresh chillies. Cook for 1 minute. - Add the potatoes mix well. Stirring occasionally; cover and cook for about 10 minutes. - Add the cauliflower mix well. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. If the vegetables begin to stick to the bottom of the pan – add a splash or two of cold water. - Once cooked check seasoning. Garnish with coriander and serve with naan or chapatti and plain yoghurt. What to do in the event of a Fire It has been 5 months since our last "What to do in the event of..." article, which many readers have told us they find very informative. Previously we have covered differing medical emergencies. This time we look at what should be done in the event of a fire. Prior Preparation is absolutely essential. Make sure that fire alarms are fitted, and working. All too often they have had the batteries removed to stop the 'bleep bleep' noise when they need renewing. Make sure everyone in the household knows what escape route they should use. And make sure that all doors that could be locked have keys close by, and that the members of the household know exactly where the keys are located. If there’s a fire, you need to act quickly. • Alert everyone – make sure everyone in the house knows about the fire – shout and get everyone together. Get everyone out – use the escape route that you have planned and that everyone is familiar with. • Don’t delay to save valuables or look for pets. Time is of the essence, and your family come first. As it happens cats and dogs are extremely adept at saving themselves from fire, much better than humans in fact. • Don’t investigate the fire. Leave the fire fighting to the trained professionals – it is their job and they have the proper training. • Crawl on the floor if there is smoke – the air is cleaner near the floor. • On the floor, put your nose as low as possible – remember, smoke is toxic and can kill. • As you go out, only open the doors you need to, and close any open doors you can, to slow the spread of the fire. • Feel doors with the back of your hand before you open them, if they are warm, do not open them – the fire is on the other side. • If you are escaping with others, stay together if you can.

What to do if your clothes catch fire.

If your mind goes blank, the main thing to remember is 'Down and Roll'. • Do not run around – you will fan the flames and make them burn faster. • Lying down makes it harder for the fire to spread and reduces the effect of flames on your face and head – as flames burn upwards. • Smother the flames – cover the flames with heavy material, like a coat or blanket; this blocks the fire’s supply of oxygen. • Roll around – rolling smothers the flames.

As soon as you are outside and safe.

• Call 112. • When you speak to the operator give your whole address, including the town. Tell them what is on fire, e.g. "a two storey house". • Explain if anyone is trapped and what room they are in - give as much information as you can so that they can help you. • Do not go back in - if you go back into the building, you will slow down the fire fighters’ efforts to rescue anyone else missing – and put your own life in danger. • Find somewhere safe to wait near the building until the emergency services arrive. This information is brought to you by the Asociación Amigos Europeos de Javea (AAEdJ), which is a private ambulance service. Annual Membership costs just €50 each year per family. The fee entitles members to be taken to a public or a private hospital in case of an emergency for free. Emergencies away from the house are included, and all the ambulances are staffed by two qualified paramedics. Our ambulances are fully equipped with life-saving equipment. Effectively they are mobile intensive care units, capable of saving lives or reducing the severity of an injury. To join, speak with Laure Bolufer, the AAEdJ Registration Manager on 96 579 6099 (Laure works from 10am to 1pm every weekday). The AAEdJ covers almost all of Costa Blanca North and inland, and of course Laure will be able to confirm if your area is covered. ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA. Exemplary Service leads to More Business at SHOWERMAN When Richard and Connie, who have lived at La Cala in Javea for 9 years, decided that they wanted to renew their downstairs bathroom, they wisely sought out a couple of quotes. The bathroom was looking tired and old, being original from when the house was built in the late 90s. It had a small 3/4 size bathtub and everything looked a bit granny-ish. Richard and Connie were looking to update the design with a walk in shower, and a much more modern and brighter aspect. They knew about SHOWERMAN from an experience that Richard had about 5 years previously. Back then, needing to find a replacement seal for an old shower door, Richard went to SHOWERMAN to see if he could buy a replacement. But unfortunately that shower door design had been discontinued many years before. So Richard could have been facing the unwanted expense of having to purchase an entirely new shower door. But suddenly Alex from SHOWERMAN had an idea, she went into their storeroom, hunted around and found a seal with a vaguely similar profile from an ex-display door. She gave it to Richard to try at home, to see if it would work on his door. It did! Richard returned back to SHOWERMAN to pay for the seal, but she refused to take any money, simply saying "I've done you a favour, hopefully some time in the future if ever you need a new shower, hopefully you will ask me to quote". So Richard, true to his word, asked SHOWERMAN to come along and quote, along with 2 other firms. At the same time, by coincidence, one of their neighbours across the road had just had SHOWERMAN fit a bathroom, and they were extremely pleased, and couldn't recommend SHOWERMAN highly enough. So when Alex visited, measured, suggested a design, and quoted, when her price quotation came in the lowest of the 3 quotes, it immediately made sense that Richard and Connie would choose SHOWERMAN. Because of Alex's exemplary service all those years before, because of their neighbour's recent recommendation, and because of her good price, it was an "Absolute No Brainer!" says Richard. He continues "The whole process was really smooth, and Alex was excellent at co-ordinating all the tradesmen to get things done at the right time". And now that the new bathroom is finished, Richard and Connie are extremely pleased with the result, so much so that they are already in discussions with SHOWERMAN about remodelling their upstairs bathroom as well. And they also give a "Highly Recommended" seal of approval to SHOWERMAN. Find SHOWERMAN at Calle Historiador Escolano 14, Jรกvea Old Town. Open Monday - Fri day 10am to 1pm. BOILER MAINTENANCE: 3 Reasons and 1 Simple Tip By Boilers‘R’Us It’s vital to have an efficient and reliable boiler. Hot water on demand plus a warm home are basic comforts in life which we appreciate even more when they are not working. There are 3 main reasons to have expert regular maintenance… 1 – Spot Potential Problems Just like with your car, trained engineers can spot problems before the boiler breaks down, often saving you expensive repair costs further down the line. 2 – Improve Boiler Efficiency Another reason to have your boiler maintained is to ensure it’s working at its optimum efficiency. Lack of efficiency means you’ll be paying more for your household energy. Trained engineers will inspect all your boiler’s components and figure out if anything needs changing. In the long run, the cost of replacing components will be more cost effective than paying more for your gas and electricity! 3 – Ensure Safety Badly installed or maintained boilers not only cost you money, they can in extreme cases cost you your life. Carbon monoxide is often known as the silent killer and a badly maintained boiler can leech carbon monoxide. You can’t smell it, you can’t see it, but it is poisonous and can be fatal. If for no other reason, we at Boilers‘R’Us can’t stress highly enough the need for regular boiler maintenance. Boilers‘R’Us is part of established and respected K&M Electrodomesticos. Based in Calpe with a team of highly experienced engineers, you can be assured that your boiler is in good hands and will remain in tip top condition for years to come. If you have a boiler that hasn’t been serviced, then call Boilers‘R’Us on 96 587 4838 or visit boilersrus.es. TOP TIP for YOUR BOILER Now for our top tip. Do you find that your hot water isn’t quite as hot as it used to be? The main reason is that the water flow – or demand – is not as good as it should be. The main cause is clogged up tap filters. Simply unscrew the tap head and either clean or replace the filter. You’ll soon be enjoying hot water all over again! If in doubt, then call us and we’ll come and take a look. Garden Design I may be going over slightly old ground here, but I feel that a lot of people worry a lot about the potential cost of using a garden designer and landscape company. The main point is that Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth it will probably be a lot less than you expect to create a design and as with any business deal, if you feel costs are too high or the situation doesn’t suit you, then you can decline the work being done before you go too far, just the same as any other business situation.

&

But the main reason for using a garden designer is to give you the expertise and eyes of a well seasoned professional to give you exactly what you want, and often because of that experience, even save you money on your way to having that dream garden.

Because Charlesworth Gardens are also a landscape company (not just a design company) it means when I design a garden (or any type of landscape project) I am always designing with the mind of how to build. Something too many other companies and building companies sadly do not do. This allows for our projects to flow a lot better and work more smoothly. This also means that for customers who just want a design done, either for themselves to build a garden or employ their own trusted builder, I am always here to help point them in the right direction or project manage the job for them.

Garden Talk. I haven't had a lot of time to talk about the weather this year. At the moment the weather seems to be warming and I don't want to say that summer is definitely on its way but, it does seem to be trending that temperatures will be on the increase and you can start to think about pruning and prepping your garden for the growing season ahead. The weather here in the northern Costa Blanca hasn’t been too harsh at all this winter period, but consequently this means your plants will charge head on into the year, so prune them back and watch them go. Enjoy your garden more this year.

Transform your bedroom into a beautiful retreat with curtains and soft furnishings in colours that feed your soul. We often concentrate our design attention to the rooms where we live our active lives and entertain friends and family, neglecting the more private areas of our homes. However, our bedrooms are very special rooms, our own personal spaces and a sanctuary where we can retreat from the world, relax and unwind, restoring our body with rest and sleep. Bedrooms are where we start and end the day, and as such, creating the right ambience is vital to our well being; the colours that we wake up to affect us throughout the day, and the atmosphere that we relax in affects the quality of our sleep. The fundamental elements of your bedrooms´ decor may well already be in place; your bed, bedside cabinets, chest of drawers, and wardrobe space, but you can completely change the look and feel of the room by changing or adding curtains and soft furnishings to introduce colour, texture and style. Colour Therapy for the Bedroom The first step is to decide what ambience you want to create, and choose the colours that create that look and feel. Burgundy, scarlet and red are very energetic and physical colours, great for stimulation but not so good for a peaceful night’s sleep. Pink and plums are softer and more romantic versions of these colours and much more suited to a bedroom. Peach and apricot are emotionally supportive colours, providing love from their pink tone and energy from their yellow tone. However yellow by itself, although a cheerful colour, is mentally stimulating and should never be used in the bedroom of an insomniac. If yellow is your preferred colour, use it sparingly and ensure it is a pale tint or even cream. Blues make a bright bedroom serene, but if you are of a quiet disposition or prone to depression, it is better to use lilac, orchid, lavender or almond blossom tones which are both soothing and supportive. Mulberry, salmon or rose pink are stronger pink tones for those of you that are not so keen on pastels, and promote warmth and affection while still being restful. Blues and greens are soothing and refreshing in a bedroom, and create a relaxing and restful atmosphere, particularly appropriate for the bedroom of someone suffering from stress. Blue-green and turquoise are both peaceful and fresh and especially good for this hot climate and sun filled rooms. Feminine bedrooms Many women like to have a feminine feel to their bedrooms, and all white walls with crisp white bed linen is a classic clean and cool look. Offset with wood furniture and natural textures, an all-white bedroom has a simple and fresh atmosphere that can be further softened with plants to subdue the harsh whites and create a less clinical feel.

Page 31 www.femalefocusonline.com Whatever the colour, a distinctly feminine feel can be created with layers of softly draped fabric at the windows, and a bed dressed with a sumptuous throw over and plenty of soft cushions. Consider an upholstered headboard to coordinate with your other soft furnishings and to create a hotel chic feeling. Masculine bedrooms Men can unwittingly choose so-called masculine colours for their bedrooms such as black, navy and burgundy, however large expenses of these colours can end up depressing and negative. If these colours are to be used, keep them to a minimum and complement them with brighter, lighter colours as well. Natural balance As well as influencing the atmosphere of a room, curtains also play a vital role in maintaining a natural balance to our sleep patterns. It is all too easy to drop the persiana blind at night to create darkness, however the lack of light flooding the room in the morning means we don't wake up naturally and this can affect your energy levels for the rest of the day.

If you find it difficult to wake up in the morning and lack energy, then light curtains are best for you, allowing natural light to flood the room making you feel brighter and more alert. However if you are a poor sleeper then heavier curtains will ensure light is blocked from the room during the night, but still allow enough light in to allow you to wake up naturally. If you would like to change the look and feel of your bedroom, we at Lotus Interiors are here to help guide you in the right direction, with inspiring ideas and practical advice on what would best suit you. Simply call to arrange your free no obligation in-house consultation and take the first step to creating your perfect retreat.

Spread some Sunshine What a perfect recipe for a fund raising evening .... Tasty Food Options, Casa Campo Venue, Music Man - Mr Matt Mason and some kind and generous friends. Everyone joined in the fun and boogied late into the night, helping us to raise 870€. The Spread some Sunshine Project raises funds to ensure children in care in The Anula Wijerama Home for Girls and The Baransuriya Home for Boys on the SW Coast of Sri Lanka have food to eat and other basic essentials. Helen Davis who founded the project just over a year ago gave an insight into where the money has been spent over the past year and the forthcoming plans for 2019, she said, 'Thanks to the donated items we receive, we raise funds from selling items on for commission or at rastros, along with some fun events, I am really proud to say we were able to send almost 20,000€ to the homes'. Just a few of the things the project achieved in 2018 are: Delivery of food each month. Refurbishing the boys bedrooms, including new wardrobes and mosquito nets. Replacing kitchen equipment. Introducing carpentry lessons, art and craft classes. Providing new clothes and shoes. Rebuilding of the Buddhist Shrine. Creating a Christmas to remember. In 2019 we are working to introduce regular health checks in both homes – eyes, ears and teeth. The children’s day is quite simply just going to school, so we are hoping to introduce some outside activities, such as volleyball, weights, circuit training. We shall be supporting the very special Pamoda family - 4 children, 1 with severe kidney problems and 3 with severe disabilities – we will help cover transport costs to hospital, medication, bandages, incontinent pads and equipment. We want to organise and cover costs for local trips to the river and park. Our money goes such a long way in Sri Lanka, we can achieve so much. Please join our FB page Spread some Sunshine SL to follow progress, if you have any items to donate or ideas to raise funds please contact me, Helen on aba.helendavis@gmail.com.

Franciscan Shelter for Men The Franciscan Shelter for Men at Palma de Gandia provides a home and nursing care for around 65 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental or physical illness. Some are terminally ill. These men would otherwise be on the streets and unlikely to survive without this special care. Admission is solely on the basis of need. All nationalities and all religions (or none) are accepted. The hospice is funded entirely by charitable donations, not a cent is received in state aid. Three Franciscan Brothers, (Hermano Guillermo, Hermano Pepe and Hermano Martin) assisted by local volunteers, care for the residents around the clock. Every bathroom that is in the main building MUST now have a shower hand support and then around every corridor a handrail on at least one wall. This is going to be expensive. This is not a wish it is an obligation required by Sanidad. To get an idea of the cost each bathroom is going to be about 100€. So more funds are needed on top of their everyday needs. Find out how you can help with donations or volunteering by visiting the Facebook page 'Franciscan Shelter for Men at Palma de Gandia'. Female Focus March 2019

De-clutter your home and help those in need The Charity Shop of Calpe had another outstanding year in 2018, donating over €21,000 to associations in the town, including over €5,000 to Caritas and the Food Bank, plus more than €2,000 to the Gargasindi school, Calpe children's home and Maite Boronat Centre. All of this was made possible by the loyal customers who buy from the shop and by those who donate items they no longer need. The onset of spring is a great time to start clearing out your wardrobes, cupboards and store rooms. Any of you who have read the bestseller The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo will know just how satisfying de-cluttering your home can be. And, if you bring your quality unwanted items to the Charity shop of Calpe, then everyone's a winner. The shop sells everything from ladies' and men's clothing and shoes, to accessories, home-ware, DVDs and small items of furniture. So please bring your items into the shop which is in the Galerías Mar Azul - halfway up Avenida Gabriel Miró on the right hand side. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 1.30pm. The final part of the jigsaw to the shop's success is the hard working volunteers, who give their time freely. Over the 16 years of trading – the shop has donated over €300,000 in total, none of which would have been possible without them. The photo shows the team celebrating another excellent year.

Love Was In The Air 15 February saw Denia Rock Choir once again perform at Help activity centre in La Xara for the Parkinson's Group. The Parkinson's group, who have an international membership of over 30 people, meet once a month at the activity centre to chat over coffee and cake and are able to discuss new developments in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. They also have guest speakers and enjoy social days out. If you require any further information their co-ordinator is Pat Lee Paton (mobile 634 301 677) who will be happy to help. After a wonderful Valentine's lunch cooked for the members, Denia Rock Choir sang from their repertoire a total of 13 songs ranging from the early 60s to present day, with a rousing rendition of Delilah by Tom Jones and It’s my Life by Bon Jovi to end the performance. It was wonderful to see so many members of the audience singing along and judging by the smiles and applause, they enjoyed it as much as the choir did. We were then served with wine, tea, coffee and beautiful cakes and biscuits which gave the choir the chance to have a chat with the audience. It was a great pleasure for the choir to sing for this wonderful group and hopefully we will be asked to return! You can find out more about Denia Rock Choir via Facebook 'Denia Rock Choir'.

Almost 1,000 people renewed their membership and 130 new members signed up. A number of groups were represented at the meeting including Painting in Watercolours, Live Art, Book Club, Poetry for Pleasure, Dine & Dance, Not Just Folk Music, Solos on Sunday, Walking, Spanish Culture & Cuisine, Canasta and Rummikubs. The Travel Team were also out in force, collecting bookings for numerous trips. Tickets went on sale for the U3A’s prestigious annual May Ball, to be held this year at Salones Carrasco, with entertainment being provided by the highly-rated Black Glitter band. President Val Dromgoole thanked all the volunteers for their sterling work on the day and particularly Groups Coordinator David Whybrow, who planned and organised the event. For more information please visit http://www.u3ajavea.org/.

Dénia U3A AGM was followed by the announcement of the winners of their recent poetry competition. Many members entered and the judges had a very difficult task. In fact they were astounded by the amount of talent lurking in Dénia. The finalists are 1st Norma Robertson for The Class Reunion, 2nd Frances Uhindu-Gingala for Siesta and 3rd Anne Mitchell for Poetsea. Each winner read out their poem to thunderous applause. Well done ladies! What next for Dénia U3A? Not satisfied with making members exercise their brains, the club is holding a tea-dance to ensure they get the limbs moving. The first tea dance will be held in March and in case any members are rusty (in their dance moves, not just joints) 3 professional ballroom dance teachers will be there to teach the waltz, quickstep, sequence dances and more. Following tradition, afternoon tea will be served with cava, scones, cakes with a Spanish flavour of pinchos. Should be a fun afternoon. See www.u3adenia.com for more information. JEC Costa Blanca A great day was had by members of the JEC Costa Blanca región when an organised run took us along the N332 scenic coast road which has fabulous sea views that overlooks the prestigious port of Campomanes. The day was Thursday February the 14th, Valentine’s Day and the sun was shining brightly with clear blue skies. We were on route to see the spectacular sight of almond blossom in full bloom because Jalón valley is famous for this annual event which creates a flush of pink and white through the entire valley of Jalón every February. We also made a stop at the bodega in the village for wine tasting which is also something not to be missed, then once everyone had made their purchases our next stop was for lunch at the restaurant PEPE in Alcalalí. This restaurant is well known by the British expats and on this day the second car park was reserved for the club to line up our Big Cats, where 23 different models were left glinting in the afternoon sunshine as their owners ate a hearty lunch that was served in the restaurant to our group of 46 hungry but very happy people. For more information on this friendly group please email: mikebikejec@gmail.com.

ANGELS WANTED! Guardian Angels (www.guardian-angels.es) is a Costa Blanca based charity that supports single parent families in the area. Many of these parents came here happily married with their children, only to sadly split up and become the sole supporter for their family. Living in a foreign country with a different language brings huge challenges in the form of mental, emotional and financial distress. GA helps them by giving emotional support from a mentor and financial help when bills are hard to pay as well as helping in many other ways. If you are the kind of person who has empathy and would like to give back please contact us for a chat. You will find giving some of your time to help our families will be very rewarding. We are looking for: 2 committee members, a Vice President to support the President and 2 mentors (with counselling or similar background). Please contact Gill ASAP to arrange a meeting by email: gill@guardian-angels.es or 655 415 003. Female Focus March 2019

We’ve been around so long, we’ve sold the same house 4 times!

By Michael Breen – MD – Gran Sol Properties Calpe.

Gran Sol Properties was established in Calpe nearly 30 years ago and were one of the first British Estate Agencies established on the Costa Blanca. Started by Jack Breen, and handed down from father to son, we have earned a reputation based on experience, friendliness and a deep, intimate and historical knowledge of the local area. This gives great insight when to selling your property. Add to that the fact that we have a network of agents across the UK who regularly introduce genuine buyers, and you can see why we’re proud to have sold some properties more than once! As a family business, we have always been proud of our customer care. Where others may simply forget about clients once the sale is underway, we find that being prepared to go the extra mile not only keep our sellers and buyers happy, but decreases the chance of the sale falling through. We have had countless personal recommendations over the years and regularly receive letters thanking us. Our offices are located in the heart of Calpe with excellent footfall and large window displays. It may seem old-school but we believe that the internet should be an addition to traditional marketing, not a replacement. We enjoy regular walk-ins from people looking at properties in our window and of course, our internet presence is equally solid. Our reputation is built on our experience, history and knowledge and it’s true when we say we’ve actually sold the same house 4 times! What this means to you is that you can list your property and be assured that we work tirelessly to get it sold, at the best price in the shortest time! We’re always here to welcome you for a chat on any angle of buying or selling and invite you to pop into our offices in Calle Corbeta (opposite café Peter Pan) Calpe or call on 629 618 793. We look forward to hearing from you and getting your property sold! See our main advert on the back page.

Hasta Pronto, Mike.

RENTING YOUR PROPERTY?

Avoid fines by ensuring you have the necessary certificates. By Horizon Holiday Villas. Since the new rules for tourist activity in the Valencian region came into force last year, many property owners considering renting their villa or apartment for short term and holiday rental activities don’t know where to start. However, it is simple when you know how, and Horizon Holiday Villas offers a complimentary service assisting owners in obtaining all the necessary certification and licences required, as part of their full management package. They work together with external architects who must make the application for the Urban Compatibility Certificate at the local town hall, before the application for a Tourist Licence number can be made at the appropriate Territorial Tourist office. Many owners are unaware that they must have a valid Habitation Certificate in place before any of the above can be administered, and the failure to have an up to date certificate in place can result in the owner receiving a fine. If you are a property owner interested in renting your property for holiday rental activities, then come and speak to us, and we will advise you on how to get started. We look forward to welcoming you! A quick call to Nicky at Horizon Holiday Villas can put you on the right path. Simply call 96 561 5482 or email nicky@horizonholidayvillas.com. Or pop into their offices just up from the Lancashire Bruja in Jávea (Arenal).
