Specsavers Ópticas Launches National Campaign For Guide Dogs Foundation
Specsavers Ópticas has launched a national fundraising campaign in aid of ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG), to help support vulnerable people with severe vision loss. Naming ONCE as its official charity, the opticians has pledged to raise more than 5,000€ over the next year, to support the important work of the FOPG and the services it provides. The foundation runs the only centre which breeds and trains guide dogs for blind people, or those with serious vision loss, to help them gain better mobility and more independence. Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico, of Specsavers Opticas, says: 'As an opticians, we’re passionate about improving the lives of people with sight loss, so we’ll be doing all we can throughout the year to raise funds for the foundation. Vision loss can be incredibly isolating, leading to feelings of loneliness and depression. However, thanks to the foundation and the work they do, people can gain a new sense of independence and confidence. It’s equally important that people take a proactive approach to their eye health. Regular eye tests and early detection, followed by timely intervention and management of eye health conditions, could help save your sight.' Funds will be raised across the nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain throughout 2020 in many different ways. The stores will also be sharing information with their customers about FOPG and the support they offer blind people in Spain, by providing more than 130
Female Fe male Focus March 2020
guide dogs to those in need each year. For her part, the Managing Director of FOPG, Maria Jesús Varela, highlighted the importance of this collaboration with Specsavers Ópticas, an international company committed to eye health, which is showing its support to those people who require the help of a guide dog to improve their mobility, by launching this fundraising campaign. She says it is an excellent example of corporate social responsibility in action and shows the way for many other companies who want to support their communities and those less fortunate than themselves. For FOPG, the agreement is not only important in terms of fundraising to support their important work, but also the chance to shine a light on the service they are offering, the role of guide dogs and the importance of offering the same rights of access for all people in society. Exciting changes coming soon
O
ver the last year I have been trying not to get too involved publicly over Brexit. Having lived and worked in Spain for over 30 years, I consider myself to be European. What saddens me most of all, is the surrendering of my European British passport. I wonder if the UK really understands the implications of coming out of Europe and whether it is just a fairy story – only time will tell. I am relieved a decision has finally been made and some of the uncertainty has gone. I, along with other businesses, can start to make decisions for the future. For the moment, nothing has changed. However, if your wish is to stay in Spain, you will require a Residencia, health care and a Spanish driving licence, for a start. My advice would be to do this as soon as possible. My first decision, after a lot of deliberation, is to re-locate one of the two offices in Jávea port, which was my first office. The reason for two offices in the port was essential at the time, but this is no longer the case, with the Renewals now firmly established in my Els Poblets office. The new office I will be opening is located in the Arenal area of Jávea, with the same telephone number 966 461 690, between Michaels Bed Shop and the Chinese restaurant on Avenida del Plá, giving you the choice of which Jávea office to visit, as both will be able to help you with all your insurance needs. With regards to the southern area, Benijófar office will be having a major reform this year, which is exciting as we will have a beautiful refurbished office. There will, of course, be a certain amount of chaos for a few months, which will not be easy for the staff, because we will temporarily move into the office upstairs, but the results will be well worth it. I, of course, will keep you informed of the changes. n For more information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net

What can UK expatriates in Spain expect from Brexit? by Brett Hanson, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks
A
t last we have some clarity around Brexit. While we still don’t know what the UK’s new relationship with the EU will look like next year, the transition period provides some certainty until 31 December 2020. Securing residence and existing benefits UK nationals who are lawfully settled in Spain before the end of the transition period can lock in a lifetime of citizens’ rights here under the Withdrawal Agreement. This protects access to healthcare, social security, education and employment opportunities for as long as you remain resident. If you already hold residency papers you will need to convert these to the new documents. Anyone arriving in Spain after December 2020 will be subject to new residence requirements. While yet to be defined, these may be much more stringent than today. Taxation after the transition period Each country sets their tax rules, not the EU, and tax treatment depends on residence, not nationality. The UK-Spain double tax treaty is independent of the EU. However, some non-EU/EEA assets are currently treated differently. For example, if you sell a home in Spain to buy a British
Female Fe male Focus March 2020
property once the UK is outside the EU/EEA, you may no longer be eligible for capital gains tax relief. UK pensions after the transition period UK nationals settled in the EU before 31 December 2020 can continue to receive yearly cost-of-living increases to their State Pension payments. As things stand, Brexit should not affect how you withdraw or transfer other UK pensions. However, once the UK government no longer has to abide by EU rules, it may target Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes. Currently, Spain residents can transfer to a QROPS tax-free if it is EU/EEAbased, otherwise a 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’ applies. Many expect the UK may extend this to within the EU after Brexit. A locally-based adviser with cross-border experience is best placed to help you prepare appropriately for the post-Brexit world. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. n Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com

Property Owners - don't fall foul of holiday let rules
P
roperty-buyers in Spain planning to make money from holiday lets could be forgiven for feeling confused about how to stay within the law, and not without good reason!
Since 2013, the task of regulating short-term holiday rentals has fallen to each of Spain’s 17 regional governments. This came about after the Spanish central government decided to exclude this sector of the rental market from its national Spanish Tenancy Act, or LAU (Ley Arrendamientos Urbano), preferring to devolve it to the regions. The regional governments, some of which already had a level of regulation in place before 2013, were given guidelines by Madrid and over the years most have adopted some core rules, such as homeowners needing to obtain a rental licence. Inevitably though, today there are not only regional differences in the way short-term lets are controlled, but also between provinces, town halls and cities within the same region. Even individual complexes and urbanisations have their own rules, which will be set by the community of owners, so always check these before buying somewhere. In other words, what goes in the Costa Blanca won’t necessarily go in the Costa del Sol, and rules for the city of Valencia will be different to the rest of the Valencian Community. At the same time, other factors can trigger changes to local rental regulation, such as pressure from large tourism bodies, local politics and how saturated an area is with holiday accommodation - keeping up with things isn’t easy without speaking to local experts.
Getting your licence Typical of most regions now is the need to register and have your property licensed for holiday lets. As a rule, homeowners should start by gaining permission from their town hall or declaring their intention to do so with the authorities. The next step is to register their property and obtain a unique registration number – which is done through returning a completed form to the local tourism office or post office, often followed by an inspection (depending on the region). You’ll need relevant documentation, including ID and your property’s occupancy licence. Each rental property should also be rated as either superior, first or standard, depending on the size/ level of comfort and facilities. There are minimum size requirements for some rooms, and specified health and safety standards will need to be met too. Both the rating and registration number should be included in any marketing, and on display in your property. Other – but not all - requirements include the owners having to log details of all paying guests with the local police. Beware, advertising and renting out your Spanish property illegally and without the appropriate licence can result in hefty financial penalties. Similarly, income generated from rentals should be declared to the Spanish tax office and all necessary taxes paid.
Rentals in cities In Spanish cities that have become especially popular with tourists and foreign homeowners, short-term rentals have become highly regulated in recent years. Fuelled by AirBnB, a boom in demand for holiday accommodation has in many cases been detrimental to domestic residential markets, typically leading to shortages of affordable housing for locals. Since mid-2018, short-term tourist rentals have been banned in apartments, or ‘multifamily residential housing’, in Palma. Across wider Mallorca and the Balearics, holiday rentals have always been more controlled than other mainland regions. Controls in the city of Valencia include keeping short-term rentals on different floors to residential properties and limiting them to less than 50 per cent of a block or housing unit. In some neighbourhoods, there is a moratorium permitting any short-term rentals. While in Barcelona, where the AirBnB effect has been greatest such that it is said to have the highest density of tourist apartments in Europe, there has been a heavy crack down on unlicensed holiday lets. A key takeaway for buyers intending to rent short-term to holidaymakers is to be prepared to obtain a tourist rental licence and always observe local regulation, right down to the rules of your chosen community. Using a lawyer will help you keep within the law.

Is Golf Club Membership Dying?
A
recent study* of more than 1,200 millennial golfers (i.e. those born from the 1980s onwards) came to the conclusion that club membership is evolving rather than dying and shines a light on the needs of tomorrow’s prospective club members.
Three-quarters of those surveyed said they would consider joining a golf club in the future, but the study emphasised that there is something about clubs that it is vital to understand. While many clubs worry about joining fees, in actual fact the key is whether or not the club fosters an emotional value to its members. Does it give a sense of belonging, a sense of gratification for the whole family, is it a safe haven? The clubs that were found to be prospering were doing a very fine job of communicating that value proposition. Interestingly the report supports this change by noting that millennials in particular, want additional amenities and opportunities to socialise, the research found, with fitness (71%), access for the entire family (65%), a pool (62%) and social events (57%) being the most important factors. At Altea Club de Golf we proudly believe that we are staying ahead of the game, having recently opened a fitness centre, revamped the club restaurant and are currently planning to increase the number of social events for our members. Why not come and join us as a member? You can play all year round as much as you like from as little as 25€ per week making it incredible value, and as a special incentive, we’ll give you a complimentary 100€ voucher to be used in our pro-shop (see advert below for conditions). You are more than welcome to come along, see what we have to offer and play a round on our unique course, have a leisurely lunch and see why so many other members call Altea Golf Club their club! * Source: The Truth About Millennial Golfers’ by Global Golf Advisors and NextGen Golf

Host Families Needed I
nglaterra en Casa are a Spanish company based in Valencia who this year are celebrating their 10th Birthday. They have four English academies in the city which are open all year. In the summer they arrange for Spanish students from all over Spain, to come and stay for two weeks on the North Costa Blanca with native English speaking people. This year will be the 11th year they have arranged a host family programme in the area. In addition to the Host Family programme there are also two football camps around Spain arranged in association with Sunderland Football club and two residential English camps, one in Beniarbeig and one in Castellon. The company are looking for native English speaking people who live between Oliva and Benidorm to host Spanish students from the 28th June – 10th July, and 12th July – 24th July. The host families receive payment for hosting the Spanish students, and from this they must provide accommodation, all meals and snacks, except lunch during the week which is provided at the school. The students attend summer school in Benissa from 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and there are buses from several areas to and from the school daily. Several of the families have come back year after year, and really look forward to welcoming the students into their homes, all types of families are considered, retired people, families with or without children of their own. Everyone brings something different to the programme.

he weather has been moody of late on the Costa Blanca but finally spring has come knocking. And that calls for an increased spring in our step! The almond blossoms are bejewelling our valleys, the skies are virtually cloudless and the sun is warming our hearts and our hills. The joy of walking is almost never quite as rewarding as it is in these picture perfect months of new growth. If all that isn’t enough enticement to see you set off on a stroll I have some amazing news for you all. There’s an even greater incentive to boot up and pound the pavements. WALKING IMPROVES YOUR MEMORY. And no, I don’t just mean that walking creates new memories that we can happily snap on our iPhones as we trot along. What I mean to say is that studies have shown that walking is beneficial when it comes to protecting and improving cognitive function. Leading a sedentary lifestyle can actually negatively affect a person's brain. Even 4000 steps a day can boost our brain function, preserve brain health, increase our memory capacity and even keep neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia at bay. So, if you thought hours of Sudoku and your daily crossword was keeping you tuned on then you wouldn’t be mistaken BUT, so too does just 10 minutes of daily aerobic exercise.

So, in going for a walk, you not only fill your lungs with fabulous fresh air, burn unwanted calories and soak up the wonderful outdoors, you are also exercising your precious cerebrum. It all makes perfect sense. Without getting too bogged down in the science bit there are unarguable reasons why walking keeps our gray matter in top condition. Walking helps improve oxygen flow to the brain and this is a VERY good thing. Our brain uses about 20% of our body’s total oxygen supply. So, if we don’t get enough oxygen up there, it’s easy to feel foggy or unfocused. About one third of our brain is made up of blood vessels. It’s no wonder that substantial blood flow is important to brain health. Researchers have found that the impact from hitting our feet on the ground during a brisk walk sends a hydraulic wave upwards through our body and acts like a pump that increases blood flow to the brain. Have I lost you? Have you switched off? Maybe it’s time to get cracking and offer your noggin a well deserved work-out. With weather like this, landscapes that beg to be discovered and your treasured mind looking for some special care, I urge you to participate in this free and fun activity. The Good Care Group is proud to be the most awarded and accredited Live-In Care Provider in the UK. They are rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in all 5 categories and are committed to delivering the highest standards of care for their clients, and support for their Carers. Due to their continuous growth they are actively looking to recruit more Live-in Carers who are based in Spain and able to travel to the UK to look after their elderly clients living in England and Scotland. They have a recruitment and training team based in Spain and have many carers who currently split their time between living in Spain and working in the UK. Professional Live-in Carer Allison has worked with the company since 2016 and says “I have been very lucky and have cared for the same lady for 3 years, I also cared for her husband as well for two of those years. We have a lovely relationship, my lady has dementia and I can see the difference Live-in care has made to her life. It’s a joy to spend time with her, we have many special moments together and are lucky to share many common interests. To see the difference I make to her life really does make caring for her a pleasure.” All Professional Carers are directly employed by The Good Care Group and receive market-leading training which is held in either Guardamar or London (accommodation and travel contributions included). With a variety of rota patterns to choose from, flight contributions from Spain* and paid UK travel expenses whilst in placement, their carers can get the best of both worlds; spending their time working in the UK and still enjoying valuable time off in Spain. Typical shift patterns for Live-in carers are "2 weeks on" and "2 weeks off" and this has proven to be an ideal working arrangement for many Spain-based carers. They do have many other working patterns available; so you can pick the pattern that suits your lifestyle and gives the best balance between working and spending time with family and friends. As all of the roles are for “Live-in” care positions, your accommodation will be provided for the duration of your working time in the UK - you do not need to have a UK base. The Coronavirus COVID-19 in Spain
T
he spread of the Coronavirus (now given the medical name COVID-19) has been rapid. In January, the World Health Organisation declared it a "public health emergency of international concern", which has only happened five times in the last decade, and the UK Chief Medical Officer has raised the risk to the public from low to moderate. But the stated overall risk to individuals still remains low.
Here in Spain, at the time of writing, there are only 2 people infected with the virus. The first confirmed case was of a German tourist on the Canary Island of La Gomera (31st January). The second confirmed case was of a British father who tested positive (10th February) in Mallorca where he reported having come into contact with a Brit who had holidayed in France and who was subsequently diagnosed. However, some of the repercussions of the potential spread of the disease are already beginning to show in different guises. The World's Biggest Mobile Technology Fair which was expected to draw more than 100,000 visitors from over 200 different countries (scheduled for 24-27 February) in Barcelona was cancelled by its organiser, after dozens of major technology and wireless carrier companies like Ericsson, Nokia, Sony, Amazon, Intel and LG all pulled out, citing concerns for the safety of their staff and visitors. In response the Spanish government issued a statement saying that it “believes it is not public health reasons in Spain that have motivated the cancellation”. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, issued a statement saying "Neither in Barcelona, Catalonia or Spain does any health concern exist today. There is no local reason to cancel". However the government failed to say what other reasons it thought were actually behind the decision. Previous disease outbreaks, Sars included, suggest what could be next for COVID-19. Although thousands are already dead, and infections have been confirmed in 25 countries, there is a chance that it will end with a whimper, not a bang – fading into obscurity like Sars. In all likelihood there are 3 main scenarios as to how this will play out: the disease could spread into a global pandemic, it could remain largely contained within China and taper off on its own, or it could become another illness that never leaves us, flaring up seasonally as the flu does now.

Basic protective measures against the new coronavirus. 1) Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub if your hands are not visibly dirty. This will eliminate the virus if it is on your hands. 2) Practice respiratory hygiene when coughing and sneezing, covering mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – and discard the tissue immediately into a closed bin and clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. Covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing prevents the spread of germs and viruses. If you sneeze or cough into your hands, you may contaminate objects or people that you touch. 3) Maintain social distancing at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and other people, particularly those who are coughing, sneezing and have a fever. When someone who is infected with a respiratory disease, coughs or sneezes they project small droplets containing the virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the virus. 4) Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces which can be contaminated with the virus. If you touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your contaminated hands, you can transfer the virus from the surface to yourself. 5) If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. And most certainly inform your health care provider if you have travelled in an area in China where the coronavirus has been reported, or if you have been in close contact with someone with who has travelled from China and has respiratory symptoms. The three WHO diagrams give more information. So far a true pandemic seems to be on hold, we are in the containment phase at the moment. Adhering to basic protective measures will help keep it that way. For further information you can search the following websites: www.nhs.uk or www.who.int or for news: www.bbc.com.

Creating fabulous colour
G
reat hair colour does not happen by simply pointing to a colour on a chart or grabbing for a box of dye from a supermarket shelf. There are so many important reasons to come to the professionals; a perfect hair colour will not only complement your skin tone and make your best facial features shine; it can also help you look years younger. There are many considerations: your existing colour both natural and artificial, undertones in your hair, your skin tone and colour placement. The exact same product on two different people will create very different results. As a general rule those with warmer undertones in their skin will look great with a warmer hair colour, like golden blondes or honey browns. Equally, those with cooler undertones in their skin will look better with cooler hair colours, like ash blonde, black or auburn brown. Eye colour is also a good indicator of tones that may suit you. The colour placement is just as important as the colours chosen: balayage, baby lights, full highlights, ghosting, low lights, pastel toning and the list goes on. Instead of a translating all the terms, it is often easier to explain the end result you are looking for and show images of colour you like and those you don’t as this will help your colourist chose the best application technique and colour combination for you. Equally as we age, our skin and hair colour and texture change so reverting to the colour of your younger years often has the effect of looking harsh and aging and although science is always working on a solution to grey hair it may be many years before solutions are available so, in the meantime, the team at Mimis Kru will continue to create fabulous colours with the Wella professional range. We have many clients who are not permanently living here and worry about matching their hair colour, but there is no need to be concerned - the Mimis Kru team can match your colour perfectly, so call us to book a free consultation to discuss your colour, or you can also book appointments online through our website. n Mimis Kru,

Processionary Caterpillars can be dangerous to Humans too E
very year during the springtime, you may hear people talking about the pine processionary caterpillars. Usually it will be pet owners warning other pet owners, because these tiny but deadly creatures can kill a pet.
Dogs are the main victims as when they come into contact with the caterpillars they can pick up the hairs on their paws, which are then licked because of the irritation and the poison spreads to the mouth. They could suffer breathing difficulties as their tongue swells, start vomiting or foaming at the mouth and should be taken urgently to the nearest veterinary clinic for an immediate cortisone and antibiotic injection. The Pine Processionary Caterpillar (Thaumetopoea Pityocampa) The pine processionary moth hatches around May to July and only lives for about a day. During this time it must mate and lay its eggs in the foliage of a pine tree. A single female can lay up to 300 tiny eggs and once hatched, the caterpillars build a white candyfloss-like nest and feed on the pine leaves. Between January and April, the caterpillars make their way to the ground in a long chain, or ‘procession’, searching for the next place to continue their life cycle, burrowing just below the ground where they will pupate. Before this happens they can be a real danger to humans and other mammals. A true example. A friend of ours saw a long line of the caterpillars on his patio, and did not fully appreciate how dangerous they are, so he stamped on
Female Fe male Focus March 2020
them, thinking to remove the dead bodies after. But if the caterpillar is stressed or threatened it can eject its tiny hairs, which act a little like barbed harpoons that penetrate and irritate any exposed skin. The hairs contain a protein called thaumetopoein and although our friend was dressed in jeans, and had shoes and socks on, some of the hairs must have made their way up his trouser legs, onto his skin. Within a few minutes his ankles had swollen up, and the bottom of his legs were twice their normal size. His skin was super itchy, a nasty red rash started, and it felt like he was being prodded with hundreds of painful sharp needles. Despite taking an antihistamine and painkillers the painful sensation lasted for about 12 hours, and the rash continued to be very irritating and lasted for about a week. So be warned, because the caterpillars can pose a major risk to children and adults. In humans even more than 'just' causing an allergy to the skin and possible dermatitis, if inhaled the hairs can cause severe respiratory problems, and if the hairs get into the eyes they can cause eye damage. n Article provided by Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea, please see our advert on this page.

HELP from our friends.
It was with great pleasure Denia Rock Choir presented President CANDY WRIGHT and AILEEN MORGAN of Help of Marina Alta with a cheque for the sum â‚Ź1,100! The money was raised by the choir at two concerts given at Hostel Loreto Denia last year.
The choir was led by their new musical director Claire Lowe and was much appreciated by the two audiences! The repertoire consisted of songs that were favourites of the choir including a very daring rendition of the Sound of Silence which was truly enjoyed by all then moved on to classic Christmas songs that we all know and love! The audiences were very appreciative in joining in with the Christmas songs and their appreciation was also shown by the wonderful amount donated by them on leaving the concerts! The choir members loved singing in these concerts and were delighted by the amounts raised on the night! Hopefully Denia Rock Choir will be singing in public in the future for the next charity of their choice. Denia Rock choir are also celebrating their 5th anniversary by having a party in Basta in Denia and are going from strength to strength but would like to ask is there any men out there who would like to join this fabulous choir? We are such a fun loving happy bunch of singers who are just short on male singers (though we love the ones we have)! For more information visit 'Denia Rock Choir' on Facebook. Article Kate Spelling. CANCER By getting some organisation into your life you can at last put some of those amazing thoughts into action. You will love the results. Is it worth losing someone so close and throwing away all the good times you have together. VIRGO This is a perfect time for brainstorming and spending time together with like minded people as you will really get some great ideas coming out of it. Also it is a great time to de clutter your space and your head. Putting your energy into your dream will keep you out of trouble.

OPENS UP ABOUT BOWEL CANCER: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DISEASE
T
By Prudence Wade, PA
he actor found out she had stage three cancer 18 months ago. Dame Julie Walters has spoken about her diagnosis with bowel cancer for the first time. The actor now has the all-clear; she told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire show her condition was discovered 18 months ago, after doctors found two primary tumours in her large intestine. Walters - who has starred in everything from Billy Elliot to Mamma Mia! - first went to the doctor because of indigestion and "slight discomfort", with her symptoms later evolving into stomach pain, heartburn and vomiting. When she was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer, she says she had surgery and 30cm was taken out of her colon. When thinking back to her diagnoses, Walters describes her feelings as: "Shock. First of all, shock. And I thought, 'Right'. Then you hold on to the positive, which was that he said, 'We can fix this'."
The charity Bowel Cancer UK says it's the UK's fourth most common cancer killer - even though around nine in 10 people would survive the cancer if detected at the earliest stage. Genevieve Edwards, chief executive of the charity, says: "Being aware of the symptoms and visiting your GP if things don't feel right can help increase chances of an early diagnosis." While there are a lot of reasons behind the lack of early detection, it may be attributed to the stigma around bowel cancer because it involves an 'embarrassing' part of the body. When asked about people resistant to go to the doctors with symptoms in that area, Walters says: "Your bowel is part of your digestive system, it's just what digests your food - and I think you just have to remember that. It's just, you've got to go get things checked." She then adds with a giggle: "Doctors are used to bottoms - they've got one themselves."
The symptoms One of the main things to look out for are persistent changes in your bowel habits. "You may have looser stools; this can happen for a number of reasons, but if there's no explanation for this and it's lasting a long time then it is something you should get checked out," advises Dr Diana Gall of Doctor4U. "Bleeding from your bottom or blood in your stools is a symptom that you should also take notice of." Other symptoms are more general and include "abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort, unexplained weight loss, and extreme tiredness which may be unusual for you, or there may be no apparent reason why you're feeling so much fatigue", says Gall. It's also worthwhile feeling for lumps in the stomach area - while this doesn't necessarily mean you have bowel cancer, they're still

Late diagnosis
something which should be checked out by a doctor. Symptoms are often subtle and can be easily confused with other bowel conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). "However, if your symptoms are persistent and are lasting more than four weeks, it's time to see your GP as this may be a sign of bowel cancer," advises Gall. According to Gall, "symptoms usually develop in later stages of cancer, but this doesn't mean it can't be treated".
Screening tests There are two main ways to screen for the cancer: one is using an at-home kit, which collects a small stool sample and sends it to a laboratory to be checked out. In the UK people aged between 60 and 74 and registered with a GP are sent a kit every two years. The NHS say it's used to check for tiny amounts of blood in your poo and does not diagnose bowel cancer, but is simple way to find out if you need further tests. Another method is a bowel scope screening, which Gall says "uses a camera instrument to look inside the bowel". It's currently being rolled out to people in England age 55 and above. Acolonoscopy can also detect bowel cancer, but isn't a regular procedure. Always see your GP if you're worried about any symptoms. Female Fe male Focus March 2020

Great News for our
Animal Friends
Saturday 22 February saw the Open Day of the brand new state-of-the-art Animal Hospital, run by Mª Carmen Garcia and her team, previously based in Jávea Port since 1992. She has the following message… “For my dear customers: I am very happy and proud to announce the change of location for my veterinary clinic. Our caring work philosophy will continue to be the same as always, and now we will be able to carry it out with greater comfort and efficiency for our pet patients, thanks to the new spacious facilities which provide a very relaxed and harmonious environment. We have a specific area for cats consisting of their own waiting room, own consultation room and own hospital completely separate from the area dedicated to the dogs. In this way we banish the stress for our feline friends, by avoiding the smells and noises that to them are unpleasant. We are delighted to consider ourselves as a Cat Friendly Clinic. Of course, for our dear dogs we also have the best possible facilities with two consultation rooms, one of them dedicated to the more specialised therapies such as neural therapy, laser therapy, physiotherapy etc, and they also have a quiet and comfortable hospitalisation area for whenever it is necessary that they are admitted and… my brand new operating room, fully equipped with the most modern treatment and monitoring equipment… how happy I am with it!” So if you were not able to visit the clinic during the Open Day, you will still be more than welcome to call in and see the brand new facilities. Please call to make an appointment, when we will be delighted to welcome you and your pets. n Ctra. Cabo La Nao / Pla 143, Bloque 14. Tel: 96 579 3551 or 657 823 784 (24Hr) or email info@javeavet.com

Page 32 arch is one of my favourite months and not just because I have my birthday in it, but because we start to see life bounce back into the garden. It's time to get back out there and have a clear through those grotty areas after the bashing we have had from the winter storms.
M
www.femalefocusonline.com
Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth
The main focus of this month’s article is more reflective, it is to show the importance of pruning your trees.
Every October I normally write an article and say how it is important to prune your trees back as we enter the autumnal and winter period, which was made evident by the bashing from Storm Gloria. Even though this weather was pretty brutal, we do still often get strong winds and storms and this is where removing the bulk from the tree really helps prevent wind damage. If a tree is well established then pruning it quite hard won’t harm it, especially most of the trees that grow in this area. You may have to be more delicate with certain trees like citrus or almond, and it may be wise to get your local gardener to deal with these if you are unsure, but trees like, ficus, olive, carrob, pepper trees you can go to town and they will bounce back like you won't believe, especially once we hit spring and the temparatures increase again, and by the time summer gets here your tree will look as good as new. The worst thing is to have a beautiful established garden and to have half of it wiped out by a storm simply because some basic pruning wasn’t done. Remember keep and eye on the weather patterns and your plants, when you see new green shoots and leaves coming then you can prune and they will reward you with a great healthy looking plant for the year. Lars Tharp ‌ Beyond earth: From Stone Age to Space Age! The Arts Society Marina Alta presentation 5 March at Salones Canor Teulada. Doors open 10am for registration, coffee is available and the presentation will begin at 10.45am. "Clay, oh, modest, pliant Clay where would we be without you? No houses, no cities of mud, brick or concrete - no civilisation; no clay tablets recording ownership for state taxation; no writing as we know it; no wine in jars to drown our sorrows; no terracotta armies, nor all the other funerary offerings provisioning us into the next world; no Grecian Urn of Keats; no gnashing of ceramic molar implants; no ceramic insulation - no electricity." A lecture on man’s affinity and dependence on simple clay. The Arts Society Marina Alta is very pleased, and proud, to welcome and have as our next presenter, Dr. Lars Tharp. He is an historian, lecturer, television presenter and cellist, a media giant of our day. Lars is now well known for his specialist expertise in ceramics, and Hogarth. He now travels through Europe, Asia & Australasia, lecturing and leading cultural tours. Lately he was given an Honorary Doctor of Arts by Leicester De Montfort University, where he is a visiting professor, and has been a stalwart for many years of the BBC television series The Antiques Roadshow. As has become standard fare, a glass of wine & soft drinks will be available to members & guests to allow socialising with the Committee and Speaker after the lecture. Hurry up and enjoy the new Cashback promotion from Liberty!
‘
Spend it how you like’ is the slogan for the new Cashback offer from LIBERTY SEGUROS, the preferred expat insurer in Spain, because it’s entirely up to you what you spend that extra cash on!
Until 26th March 2020, you can still take out a new car, home, life or funeral insurance from LIBERTY SEGUROS and access this new Cashback offer. You’ll receive the Cash back directly into your bank account! Existing customers who take out a new policy on one or more of these insurance covers, can get 60€ Cashback on each one. That means, for example, if you contract a new car policy plus a life policy you can get 120€. Imagine what you could do with that money! New clients will also benefit. They will get 30€ Cashback on the first policy and for all subsequent new policies 60€ each. Again, as an example, the first is a car policy providing 30€ Cashback and if a home and life policy is contracted too that’s another 120€ making a possible Cashback total of 150€. There is no limit on policies, so there is no limit on Cashback, whether you’re an existing or new customer! What better time could there be to switch to LIBERTY SEGUROS for even greater savings and the best covers for all types of insurance. The main condition is that premiums are paid by direct debit and all Cashback is credited to the same bank account. For convenience, payments can be set up both in Spain or in your home country bank account, as long as it is within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) zone. Customers must be aware that these offers are not for renewals or replacements and apply only to new policies for car, home, life and funeral cover issued and in force between 29th January and 26th March. Minimum premiums to access this offer are 200€ for Life insurance and 160€ for Funeral. In the case of car it will be 400€ in mainland Spain and in the Balearics and 330€ in the Canary Islands, and 220€ and 160€ for home premiums in the mainland/Balearics and Canary Islands respectively. Over 175,000 expat clients have already chosen LIBERTY SEGUROS as their insurance provider and this figure grows almost daily because of the excellent service and quality of cover they get. LIBERTY SEGUROS has an extensive network of more than 300 brokers/agents who are dedicated to providing friendly and expert advice. Speaking your own language, these brokers and agents are available to discuss, face-to-face, the cover that will be perfect for you. This must be better than dealing with anyone only by phone! n To find the location of your nearest broker / agent, please visit www.libertyexpatriates.es or simply call 91 342 25 49.

aving experienced a horrifically shocking water bill ourselves last summer, when we heard about the MiAgua solution we took almost no time in deciding to sign up. After all, spending as little as 102€ a year to prevent another episode costing us nearly 2000€ was a simple decision to make. The technology has been tested and proven so we really did have nothing to lose and the opportunity to regain our peace of mind. The shock of seeing all your money disappear from your bank account is not one we want to repeat.
So we filled in the simple online form and we were contacted to say that MiAgua had visited our property and there was a strong radio signal to their head station and that they would be round to fit the meter a day or two later. No money required upfront. The very friendly technician arrived and fitted the smart meter on our side of the water meter (after the one belonging to the water company) so nothing changes in the way you are metered and billed, this is a backup water-flow meter that simply reports on what is going through it. It is a much more sensitive piece of kit in that it can detect very small amounts of usage which you cannot see when watching the spinning dial versions as the movement in these is so slight when only a little water is trickling past. Again no money required on installation, as they explain they want to monitor the system for a few days to ensure it is functioning properly. Only then are you asked to pay, which again we did through a simple online form. The monitoring app is simple to use and can be viewed on a PC, laptop or phone. However even before we got to grips with it, Phil from MiAgua was on the phone to tell us that he suspected we had another very slow leak. We were using a minimum of 10 litres of water constantly every hour - even throughout the night - so we checked the installations in our house and indeed found that there was water escaping under the floor between our kitchen and bathroom. A situation we have now rectified and would NEVER have known about unless we had MiAgua. A big thank you to the MiAgua team. So don’t wait until you have a shocking bill. Get your MiAgua meter today and keep your money! Written by Claire Cunningham in Jesus Pobre. n Fore more information call 611 212 289 or visit www.miagua.es or see their advert alongside. LOVE FOR JAGUARS By Sandra Brook. JEC - Costa Blanca held their February meeting to coincide with Valentine’s Day, which made it a very special day to remember by the 76 members and their guests who attended the Valentine themed lunch. The day started early as members made their way to the famous Jalon valley to view the flush of almond blossom, but due to the unusually warm weather it had been brought forward by two weeks thus making its normal spectacular appearance a little more subdued. This did not dull the excitement of the full fun packed day ahead as the big cats began to roll into the parking of the coffee stop meeting point at the restaurant Venta Roja in Lliber. Once everyone had been refreshed members discussed their pride and joy as the jaguars shone brightly in the beautiful sunshine and clear blue sky of this February winter day, before proceeding to their next stop at the bodega in the village of Jalon. Their final destination was to Alcalali to the restaurant La Solana where lunch had been organised for 2 O'clock. It was served to the live music from the duo, The Crooners, along with an unexpected performance from our very own professional singer Maria, followed by dancing, making it a fabulous day that was enjoyed by everyone as the JEC members were able to spend Valentine’s Day with the loves of their lives, and also their wives. If you would like to join us on any of our monthly meetings please contact club president Michael Brook on 640 866 711 or Facebook JEC-Costa Blanca. Female Fe male Focus March 2020

TM Lions bring The Gipsy Kings Experience to Moraira
O
n Saturday 21 March the TM Lions are proud to present The Gipsy Kings Experience for the first time. This group of very talented local musicians present a fabulous tribute to the Gipsy Kings - a group of flamenco, salsa and pop musicians from Arles and Montpellier in the south of France. Although group members were born in France, their parents were mostly gitanos, Spanish gypsies who fled Catalonia during the 1930s Spanish Civil War. They are known for bringing Catalan rumba, a pop-oriented music distantly derived from traditional flamenco music, to worldwide audiences. Their music has a particular rumba flamenca style, with pop influences; their music has been described as a place where “Spanish flamenco and gypsy rhapsody meet salsa funk”. The show will be staged on Saturday 21 March, in Espai La Senieta, Moraira and starts at 7pm. Tickets are priced at 15€ and there will be a bar and raffle. All profits go to support those in need through the charitable donations made by the Teulada Moraira Lions Club. For more information on the club, visit www.tmlions.com. Come & join us for another great night & get a taste of Spain. To book your tickets for this unique and simply superb show of Spanish style music, call 966 498 493 or email tmlions.concerts@gmail.com

International Women’s Day Celebration
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8 March. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women accompanied by a call to action for accelerating gender equality. It is about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action, whatever that may look like. Here in the Costa Blanca, it looks like a gathering at Altea Golf from 11am on 8 March. Arranged by Gemma from Telitec, you will find workshops, presentations, demos, and stalls by a whole host of local women entrepreneurs, well-being practitioners, professionals, and the like. The range of demos are quite impressive, including curry cooking demonstrations and a presentation from Guardian Angels. Additionally, you’ll be able to browse nearly 30 stalls from local women covering such diverse areas as jewellery, telecoms, osteopathy, coaching, writing and personal finance. The day is in aid of Guardian Angels, a local well-respected charity supporting single parents. Female Focus Publications are proud to support Gemma in organising, and Guardian Angels in what will be a truly wonderful celebration of Women on the Costa Blanca and we look forward to seeing you on the day. • For more info, contact Gemma at Telitec on 626 939 223 or email gemma@telitec.net, also see the poster on page 25. • Altea Golf can be found at Sierra Altea Golf – head towards Altea La Vella and follow the signs or visit www.alteaclubdegolf.com for a map and directions.

If you’re interested in joining, please contact the group leader on annheidy@msn.com. To find out more about the U3A in general or to suggest any ideas YOU may have for a new group, pop in for a chat on market days (usually Friday), with Angela or Sue in Tia Chia café at the back of the Municipal Market from 11am-noon. Look out for the U3A poster on the table. Prospective and existing members are welcome to come along to this informal friendly meeting to find out about the latest groups and activities. FIVE MINUTES WITH... JON RICHARDSON & LUCY BEAUMONT
M
By Gemma Dunn, PA
eet The Richardsons was never meant to be an embellished idea of what marriage is - but proper warts and all, Jon Richardson says, of his and wife Lucy Beaumont's new sitcom. Gemma Dunn finds out more. Ever wondered what really goes on behind closed doors when it comes to celebrity couples? Well, now's your chance to find out. Kind of. Starring Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont, Meet The Richardsons - written by Lucy, 36, and Car Share's Tim Reid offers a fictional window into the funny and frustrated marriage of the comic couple. The six-part sitcom sees the duo play exaggerated versions of themselves as viewers get a glimpse into their home and work lives, surrounded by their famous friends (Bernie Clifton, Alan Carr and Jonathan Ross star, to name a few) and their Hebden Bridge neighbours. "Fundamentally, it's about being under the same roof as someone you love, but who irritates you on a daily basis," explains Jon, 37. "That's universal. It's just two people winding each other up." Featuring a third birthday party for their daughter Elsie, caravan holidays and Jon's constant refusal to do or go to anything, we're set for a giggle. But what else can the pair tell us? HOW DID 'MEET THE RICHARDSONS' COME ABOUT? L: We did Married To A Celebrity on Channel 4, which we really enjoyed, as we were basically arguing on TV and found it quite cathartic. Then Lee Hupfield [the producer] thought it could work as a sitcom and he was so enthusiastic, we trusted him that we could make it work. J: I think he could see the backstory; the same as in Seinfeld, you see their lives and how it informs their stage act. This is that, but our couch scenes are a nugget of an argument and all the rest of it is how real life plays out from that. HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT CAMERAS INVADING YOUR HOME? L: I loved it. I definitely played up to being a bit more of an aggressor. Normally I take a lot and have to back down for a lot of things. I really enjoyed going hammer and tongs and putting Jon in to awkward situations. Like setting him on fire - I really enjoyed that. J: It helps you win an argument when it's in a script and it can't be changed. If you arrive on set and there's a pyrotechnics team there, you sort of know you're going to get set on fire. HOW DID THE WRITING PROCESS PAN OUT? L: I co-wrote it with Tim Reid, who co-wrote the first series of Car Share with Peter Kay. A lot of it was taking story lines from things that have happened, almost verbatim from an argument. It sometimes got really meta, because the lines between the fictional Jon and the real Jon blurred. [For example], I agreed for us to do a Dock Pudding competition and I said that Jon was going to be a judge, but I forgot to tell the real Jon!

FOCUS ON PEOPLE
HOW TRUE IS IT TO YOUR OWN LIVES? L: All of it. Some of the story lines have been heightened for entertainment, but it's always real. It's a bit like The Only Way Is Essex. Jon's saying Seinfeld and I'm thinking, 'It's not, it's The Only Way Is Essex'. J: It's not The Only Way Is Essex! L: It's exactly the same thing that they do, and there's nothing wrong with saying that. People love it. And they all own beauty salons now, so we're going to be all right. You're going to be selling false eyelashes. IS THERE REALLY A LOT OF ARGUING AT HOME, OR IS THERE A LOT MORE LAUGHING? L: It's very rare that I make Jon laugh. He laughs at me more than with me. It's more like, 'That was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen'. J: I think we're quite relaxed around each other when we're on our own, but when we have guests, we both click into gig mode and work as a double act. I become a heightened version of me and you become a heightened version of you, and we could both do with being heightened, let's be honest. HOW DID ELSIE FIND THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE? Both: She absolutely loved it. J: She's just at an age where she can't really remember what went before, so she doesn't understand why people have stopped filming every minute of our lives. She keeps asking when the crew are coming back. She kept asking to be in scenes. L: We didn't want her in it a lot though. She was too good! We don't want her to be the next Shirley Temple. We do need to be careful about how much we expose her. WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO MORE SERIES? L: We hope so, because it's so enjoyable. J: I think, if anything, it phased the marriage out by increasing the workload, and that's the way we should do it. A few more series of this and then separate houses with an adjoining door. It's basically where we are now. I'm mostly in the pub, in the garage, and you're in our house, and then we meet up for a shoot. CAN YOU SEE YOURSELVES BECOMING THE KING AND QUEEN OF DAYTIME TV? J: I think with daytime, there's only a matter of time before you're trending on Twitter for saying something that's been taken out of context, whereas you have more control with this. It is our lives, but ultimately, you know you can record something six times then pick the best one and edit it. L: It wouldn't do us any harm to stay away from being like a married Ant and Dec. J: I don't think there are many married couples who can do what we've done. But we probably aren't the people who could interview Peter Andre about his upcoming tour. So we'll leave others to that. - Meet The Richardsons on Dave Channel.
