The importance of 100% UV resistant sunglasses The eyes are affected by the UV rays of the sun in a similar way to the skin, and even short term exposure can cause problems with your vision and increase the chance of developing serious issues such as cataracts, macular degeneration and eyelid cancer. The effects were revealed in 2017 after a woman looked directly at the sun during the eclipse for just six seconds and permanently damaged her retinas. The images of the damaged photoreceptors and a lesion caused by this brief look at the sun show just how powerful the sun is and the extreme damage that can be done to your eyes by UV rays. Louise Stone, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Calpe and Jávea commented, “Most people don’t think of sunglasses as a way to protect the eyes. We hope that seeing the damage caused by looking at the sun for six seconds did to someone’s eyes, people will make better choices and realise that they need to be as vigilant when choosing their sunglasses and deciding when to use them, as they are with applying sun cream and ensuring that skin is protected.” In a recent study of 10,000 people by The Vision Council it was revealed that less than half of people surveyed wear sunglasses when they should and that most people are more interested in comfort and fashion than protection for their eyes. This is a concern to experts, especially in countries such as Spain, where the sun is very strong throughout the year and children and adults spend more time outside. Louise explained; “You need to make sure that eyes and skin are protected from all 3 types of UV radiation (UVA,UVB and UVC) throughout the year and take particular care when you’re in wide open spaces and on the beach or on the ski slopes where UV rays are reflected from the sand, sea and snow. By choosing sunglasses with 100% UV protection, large or wraparound styles and combining with a hat you will get maximum protection from UV related eye problems.” Specsavers Opticas have just launched their new sun range for spring/summer 2018. This includes 8 new clip-on sunglasses with polarised lenses to offer 100% UV protection. View the full range on their website www.specsavers.es.

A Spring Concert in Dénia Montgó Chorale and Musical Director Jan Dewland would like to welcome you to the second of their Spring Concerts, on Sunday 27 May at 5pm in San Antonio Church, Plaza del Convento, Dénia. The concert comprises excerpts from the perennial favourite, Karl Jenkins’ ’The Armed Man’ (A Mass for Peace), a performance of which by the choir, was very well received some years ago, and Haydn’s Missa Cellensis. This grand ceremonial mass of 1782 is considered a link between the composer’s early works and his last six great masses. The choir will be accompanied by Heather Butcher. Soloists soprano Rosemary Jukic, alto Nadia Kashaeva, tenor José Luis Martinez and bass John Edwards also feature in the concert with a selection of famous solo works including the Flower Duet from Lakmé, Nessun Dorma, and Habanara from Carmen. Tickets for the concert are 12€. They can be obtained from Humpty Dumpty, Jávea, or Hostal Loreto, Dénia; or ordered for collection at the door by contacting Jan Dewland on 96 577 0973 or by email at dewlandjan@hotmail.com. The choir is delighted to be back performing in the historic church and look forward to seeing you there.

²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²² Chit Chat - Host Families Needed Chit Chat Summer Camp for children in Jávea is one of the most successful language summer schools in Spain. Because of an excess number of children wishing to stay this summer, we are right now recruiting native English speaking Host Families. If you live in Jávea, Benitachell, Gata, Moraira, Jesus Pobre or Pedreguer and you would like to earn some extra money over the summer months (July & August) and are able to offer a caring and comfortable home to Spanish children for 2 weeks at a time, please call Helena on 650 426 677. The age groups of the children range from 8 to 15. The children are at home with you overnight, and go off to the Chit Chat school by bus for the day, then return (again by bus) about 5pm-ish and are with you for the evening. This period of time, and having the family evening meal together is when the host family comes into its own, and the time can be used to really get to know the students and encourage them to use their English and to participate in British family life. On the Saturday in the middle of their stay the children go on an organised trip. There is absolutely no need for the Host Family to speak Spanish themselves, indeed the very idea is to speak English with the children the whole time, so that for the length of their stay they are exposed to the English language. With almost 40 years of experience of organising Summer Camps, Chit Chat gives full support to the Host Families. If you are interested, call Helena, the local Supervisor for Chit Chat.

Light at the End of the Tunnel The long drawn out negations on Brexit continue. The good news for expats is: 1. Health cover for retired residents is very likely to continue in a similar method to current SI cover. 2. Increases in UK old age pension will continue for expats living in EEA (European Economic Area) countries without change.
by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain
ACTION: Ensure you are a resident and on the Padron before Brexit date. Potential cost issue on transfer of UK pensions to Overseas trusts i.e. QROPS (Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) are very likely to be subjected to a 25% tax charge on transfer. This will be in line with all other countries, outside the EEA, easy money for expats. ACTION: If you hold frozen pensions in the UK (personal or company), you need to take advice to establish if you are able transfer it and if that is the correct advice. deVere is by far the largest advice providers on UK pensions across the world and we give this important advice without charge. Saving and investments in UK or Spanish banks pay less interest than inflation. In real terms, your capital, if held this way, is eroding in the long term. All interest is taxable in Spain – even ISAs – year on year at anywhere between 19% and 26%. ACTION Review Savings Over £25,000. By doing this you can 1. Get informed on a legal method of not paying tax if there is no withdrawal. 2. Avoid having to declare overseas assets on you Spanish Modelo 720. 3. Enjoy returns above the rate of inflation maintaining the currency so as not having to exchange into Euros.

4. Take a monthly income if required. So, in short what’s been happening at deVere. Well we’ve won yet another award with our CEO Nigel Green winning CEO of the year from CEO Today. We’ve strengthened our technical team with Darren Jones – one of the most respected IFAs in the sector having recently joined us. Our VAULT card goes from strength to strength and our crypto currency product is growing steadily and positively - take a look at the app in either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. And finally we’d like to thank everyone who stopped at our stand and attended our presentation at the recent Homes and Gardens show in Altea. It was a great opportunity to answer your questions and confirmed to me that there’s no such thing as too much advice, in fact it's still surprising how little some people know, who have so much to gain! A View From The South
Page 8 www.femalefocusonline.com said committee ...did he still take his salary as a Member of the European Parliament? ...you bet he did! Next I move on to the shambles of the "Nerve Agent " attack in Salisbury ...Of course it was the Russians ...why? ...because Boris Johnson said so ...you know, the former London Mayor who spent a fortune of Taxpayers' money on a water cannon that was illegal to use on London's streets. Next he turned his imagination on trying to build a bridge over the River Thames that would be covered by trees and plants ...it would also be barred to ordinary London people and as an aside would shield the downstream view of St Paul's Cathedral. Next he has turned his genius to the plight of the British /Iranian held in an Iranian jail ...with the result that she will be lucky if she is released any time soon. Finally, and to compound his utter incompetence, he appears to be trying to start World War III with the Russians.
Welcome to “A view from the South”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a Across the benches in the House of Commons we have a weak look at what is really winding me up. a bunch of opposition MPs as can be dreamed of ...In my youth
It's All Going to Pot. A friend of mine, who is also a fine musician, always quotes the above title..."It's all going to pot" when something in his particular field of interest seems to be going wrong. My understanding is that it is a title of a Willy Nelson song that he sings when he plays at the occasional Jam session. Well with my friend's permission I have stolen his favourite "ism" to write the following piece about the mess that Great Britain appears to be in. I must say that my reflections are based on my "View" and that my "View" is one that is seen from my presence living here in Spain. That said, I do visit GB and can justifiably claim experience through living the first 40 odd years of my life in Great Britain. I was born and bred a London boy ...right in the middle is where I spent my formative years, formative years when it was safe to walk the streets without fear of guns and knives. I admit that no large city will be entirely risk free, but what has happened to London to put it above New York for a couple of months (Feb and March 2018) in the Homicide league? February in London saw 15 murders whilst New York saw 14 and March in London saw 22 murders whilst New York saw 21. As I write 2018 to date, has seen 46 murders on the streets of London and of these murders, 31 were fatal stabbings. It would seem that the streets of London are no longer paved with Gold ...rather they are plagued with guns ...knives ...and drug gangs. Innocent children seem to be dying at the hands of gangs that research now says "are embedded in the culture of Britain's towns and cities". In 2017 Surrey police held a knife amnesty ...this amnesty resulted in "one weapon being handed in every three hours" ...such is the danger of the arms held on Britain’s estates and conurbations. How has Great Britain come to this state of affairs? Police numbers down overall by about 20,000 officers ...ambulances unable to assist the injured on our streets because they cannot discharge their patients into the already overcrowded Accident and Emergency departments, that themselves are underfunded and understaffed. Libraries and Youth Services being starved of cash, forcing closure and placing already vulnerable people out on to streets that are now unsafe. Business rates now so high that local high streets are now full of Charity shops and betting shops ...betting shops where you can lose hundreds of pounds to as yet, unregulated machines. This terrible state of affairs is driven by the most inept bunch of second rate Politicians that, in my opinion, Britain has ever seen. Farage has the gall to throw dead fish into the river Thames in protest at the Common Fisheries Policy of the European Union ...this despite his attendance record as a member of this committee, showing that he turned up once in thirty something meetings of the Female Focus May 2018
I was a member of the Radical Left ...I used to attend meetings where all in attendance were in agreement with everyone else ...all rational thought was ignored in the warm glow of left wing fellowship. In time I grew up and sought real time experience to rationalise and modify my beliefs ...Mr Corbyn I suggest, is still in the stage of development I was in during my early to late teens. It's all about politics without responsibility. Grow up the lot of you ...Britain deserves clear upbeat direction not the sorry shambles as a country she finds herself in.
Iron Men and Glen Hoddle. On a lighter note I was amazed to see the Australian cricket establishment fall apart at the seams as a result of the on field antics of the Australian cricket team. Iron men Aussies were all over our televisions blubbing their apologies at being caught cheating. I wonder if someone of good heart would have blown the whistle had they got away with their ball tampering. Surely the essence of all sport is that you must be able to lose ...it's about fair competition. That said, did I love the sight of Iron Men Aussies crying? ...Of course I did ...but only for a moment ...on reflection I feel sorry for them. Heard my not so favourite soccer commentator "Glen Diamond formation Hoddle" droning on about this and that during a recent Champions League football match and my attention turned to a brilliant comment I heard ...apparently someone was asked "What would you do if you were on a desert island with Glen Hoddle and a tin of creamed rice?" ...The reply was "I would eat Glen Hoddle and talk to the tin of creamed rice." My sentiment exactly.
Page 9 www.femalefocusonline.com My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I NEVER MADE A CLAIM BEFORE. I understand that making a claim can seem daunting and this is why I always visit my clients and meet them face to face. I can explain the process and I find this reassures them. I come to Spain regularly and so personal visits are not a problem. I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. It is surprising how often, when you start talking about a persons work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. MY BREATHING PROBLEMS ARE NOT TOO BAD. A lot of people I meet are dismissive of their breathing problems and underestimate how they affect their daily lives. Some people I have seen do not realise there is a time limit for bringing claims and so it is important that investigations are started as soon as possible. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.

Good News If You Have a Mortgage with a Spanish Bank Did you know that over 80% of the clients who obtained a mortgage from a Spanish Bank were overcharged interest because of the unfair application by the banks of the Floor Clause (clausula suelo). This clause was deemed to be 'abusive' by the Spanish Courts who recently ruled it to be removed. Further to this ruling, the Courts have ordered the banks to recalculate the interest payments payable from the very first day of the affected clients' mortgage and to refund the overpayments made by the client. The longer the client overpaid interest, the larger their refund will be. Astonishingly, the average repayment received by those clients who were overcharged and who have already submitted a claim, is in the region of 12,000 euros. Even if a mortgagee has closed his or her account, the ruling still applies and they are entitled to claim the amount of interest they overpaid when they were previously a client of the bank. 98% of those clients who have already submitted a claim have been successful in the courts on those occasions when the banks elected to defend the clients claims against them. As a result of these overwhelming losses in court, the banks are now much less likely to contest claims and consequently the reimbursements due to borrowers have been expedited.
Did you Invest in a Spanish Property that was Never Completed? The Spanish Supreme Court has recently ruled that banks must pay out in full against any claims made against them for the return of money deposited with them for failed off-plan purchases, or for severely delayed property developments. IMPORTANT all claims must be submitted by October 2020. So ‌.if you are reading this article and if you or any of your friends or relatives suffered a calamitous loss when purchasing a Spanish property a few years ago, then take action now - settlements to victims are averaging around 60,000 euros each.

Don’t let the vultures move your pension overseas! By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. I woke up with a fire in my belly this morning, so decided to write a different article this month than I had originally planned. I spent a little time on social media last night before bed and was barraged by adverts from various questionable operations trying to convince me to ‘Move My Pension Overseas’ citing various tax benefits (which do not always exist) and even using Brexit as a fear-mongering tactic, implying somehow people could lose access to their pensions as a result. Let’s cover off the main points here. Firstly, the majority of companies who run this kind of campaign aren’t even financial advisory companies, they are data gathering companies with generic names that include words like ‘Expat’, ‘Services’, ‘Pension Review’ and ‘Experts’ in the title. They gather data with these often-false headlines then may sell your personal details to the highest bidder, or agree a split of the eye-watering hidden fees that so many overseas financial advisors subject their unwitting clients to. Once they have your data you may soon receive a call which will attempt to sell you the benefits of moving your pension to a QROPS. Various promises may be made, from a higher Pension Commencement Lump Sum, to some mysterious tax benefits which are rarely fully explained. Firstly, the Pension Commencement Lump Sum is a fairly arbitrary offer here in Spain, because contrary to what a lot of these companies imply, it is fully taxable as a Spanish resident. Also, with flexible access now in force, you can take as little or as much from your pension at any time, meaning initial withdrawals are not restricted to this ‘Lump Sum’. Secondly, there are often no tangible income tax benefits to moving your pension overseas – these pensions are taxed exactly the same as UK based pensions for Spanish residents. There are some very specific circumstances where a QROPS could provide tax benefits to your beneficiaries, and Chorus do have clients in QROPS for this exact reason, but this is a very specific area of financial planning, and certainly QROPS isn’t the default option for the vast majority. I highly recommend exploring your pension options under The Pension Freedoms Act. Chorus have so many clients benefiting from increased flexibility, a bigger pot to pass to their loved ones, and other benefits. Since regulatory changes over the last 18 months or so, our default recommendation is to move your pension to a UK based, FCA regulated pension, rather than an overseas scheme. Many firms advertising here in Spain do not have the required licenses or regulation to offer a UK based solution for a pension transfer, or indeed to manage the investments in a UK based pension on an ongoing basis. They will recommend a QROPs because it is the only solution they can offer, rather than being the right solution for you. If you are exploring your pension options, you need truly independent advice. You also need the option to keep your transfer within the UK, avoid hidden fees, and have your pension funds managed by trusted UK based, FCA regulated companies like The Prudential, Rathbones, HSBC & Investec. If you are considering a transfer and would like to explore your options or maybe just get a second opinion please call me direct on 664 398 702 or email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es.

Is Your Sciatica Becoming a Pain in the Posterior? By Ben Tinker – Vida Plena, Calpe
Sciatica describes a type of pain coming from the lower back into the leg. However, it doesn’t identify which nerves and muscles are affected. Around 50% of my patients have some kind of sciatica, but the truth is, not everyone needs a chiropractor. In fact, the easiest fix is to take your wallet out of your back pocket whilst sitting down thus keeping the sciatic nerve free from the Glut muscle! The most complicated form of sciatica is a disc hernia or similar. Swelling and inflammation due to the disc being damaged can be controlled quickly, but it can take up to 2 months for a full recovery. The vertebrae in the lumbar spine are mobile and one of the bones can sometimes misalign causing pressure on one or more spinal nerves which control the leg and affect the function of the leg (sciatica). Here are a few tips for dealing with sciatica 1. Take some time off, rest and stretch, moving the lower back and leg. There are many ways to stretch and it’s always a good idea to listen to your body. If you feel pain whilst stretching, stop! Try stretching in a different way until you find a way that avoids pain. 2. Eat healthily and avoid sugar-based foods or toxic foods e.g. alcohol and artificial sweeteners. These promote inflammation and exacerbate the pain! 3. Turmeric powder combined with peppercorns is a good way to reduce inflammation in the body. 4. Do mobilising and strengthening exercises by attending a Pilates class, but it's best to be examined by a chiropractor first. It is my job to find the exact location of the vertebra misalignment and move it back into its normal position, thus freeing up the nerve and thus removing the symptoms of sciatica. Some people get better in one month, some people take longer than three months. However, between two and three months is a normal time for the body to heal from sciatica. At Vida Plena, we offer a free initial examination so if you’re suffering from any back pain, pop into our clinic at Calle Pintor Sorolla 1, Calpe and we can give you an initial appraisal and together chart a course to recovery. It’s best to make an appointment so please call 96 583 1234.

New nail guru at KRU KRU Jávea would like to welcome Hannah, our new beauty therapist to the team. Hannah is delighted to be joining such a fun, professional and vibrant salon. Additional nail art designs only an extra €5 for fingers and €3 for toes.
l l l
Plus she can also provide waxing, eyebrow shaping, eyelash and eyebrow tinting. Hannah is passionate about what she does and wants to share with Female Focus readers her top 5 tips for maintaining your nail health. 1. Never cut your cuticles because it leaves the nail open to infection in the nail bed. Instead, apply a cuticle-removing formula over the perimeter of your nail bed, and then push your cuticle back using the flat tip of an orange stick or cuticle pusher. 2. Always apply oil to nails. Water can dry out natural oils in nails so to replace it you can use nail oil or any nutrient-rich oil or moisturiser will do. 3. Keep fingernails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria from growing under your fingernails. Repeated or prolonged contact with water can contribute to split fingernails. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning or using harsh chemicals. 4. Stop sawing your nails back and forth. When you aggressively saw your nails with a file, it makes the tip frayed versus a clean edge, also if you are too aggressive with the file and can see your nail move back and forth, this can lead to peeling and premature breakage. 5. Always use basecoats and topcoat. A basecoat protects the nail from being stained by the polish and the top coat seals in the colour and adds a protective gloss finish. You should add another top coat layer every three days to decrease chipping. What makes us happy? We are all so different, there must be hundreds of answers to that question, but it really pays to think about it for a moment, and perhaps think differently. For many of us material things in our lives are soon soaked up with getting used to them, taking them for granted, and even not realising that they are “extras” in life. Jobs that pay well can sometimes mean that we start to spend more money, buy better and bigger things, and before we know it we feel broke again! ….and then we are looking for a “better” job! Even good relationships can fall foul because we can forget the value of the person we are with, we get used to having them in our lives and we can take them for granted and start looking for pastures greener. It seems that situations like this can apply to everyone that feels that happiness is some elusive thing that they have to keep looking for. Let’s stop for a moment and get real! In the UK I once spoke at length to an elderly lady who was a survivor of the Titanic, also a couple who were in a German concentration camp, and at one time I had a lot of contact with a man on death row in Florida…they all amazed me with their wonderful positive attitude, and they were happy! …...because they were DETERMINED to be so, from the inside out! Our ATTITUDE towards everything is what makes a difference, and we always have two choices as far as our circumstances are concerned. We can either make changes, or accept things as they are …the choice is ours. There is no situation in a normal day that does not fit in to this choice mode, and if we accept that, we can make the most amazing changes in our lives. Just seeing things differently helps, and that is down to us and how we choose to look at things. On a normal level we have so much to be thankful for ….even in what we call a deprived state, we have so much more than many people in other parts of the world, so….let’s be happy! Take care, until the next time!

A Costa Blanca Couple find free pet care when they travel TrustedHousesitters members Denise and Eric live in Orba in Spain. Denise has a day spa and beauty business and also creates her own organic beauty products which she sells via aromantis.com. Eric is a theatre Company Stage Manager returning to the UK a few times every year to do panto and install shows on cruise ships. That’s why they needed to find a sitter as there was no one to look after their cats locally. “We liked the whole concept of TrustedHousesitters and the website was so professional and easy to use. We thought we may have a couple of applicants, but we had 24! And it was marvellous, people from all over the world contacted us. The hardest thing was choosing a sitter,” Eric told us. “We have two cats and had a rescue kitten (which was quite a handful) and all the sitters have coped really well with the cats, falling in love with them." He added, “One couple who contacted us to sit couldn’t do our dates, but were house sitting in the next village. They were so charming that we met up with them and had dinner.” Eric told us about his house sitters, “Our first sitters were wonderful, the house was immaculate when we got home, with the garden swept and tidy. The other great thing is that you can always ask for advice, we had a really speedy response from the TrustedHousesitters Membership Support Team when we had some questions.” TrustedHousesitters.com launched in 2010 and today is a global community of pet lovers who help each other travel. The website connects thousands of home and pet owners with care-orientated sitters to look after their home and pets for free, in exchange for a place to stay. TrustedHousesitters.com is available in more than 130 countries and costs €89 annually for members to list their homes or to register as sitters. The site offers unlimited free house sits or unlimited free pet sitting from verified caring animal lovers and has more five-star reviews than any travel or pet company on TrustPilot. CBD oil ...tried and tested with great results By Miriam Albertini (Miriam is a registered nurse who was born and raised in Holland, now living in Spain for 12 years).
As you have read about in previous issues of Female Focus the benefits of CBD oil are wide ranging. But don’t just take my word for it. Because although I am a registered nurse and I have personally seen the many conditions that CBD can treat with success, below are some words written by two of my patients. When faced with a life changing medical condition they chose to explore how CBD could help them. And as you will read, the two of them have never looked back. “I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 2 years ago, had extensive radio therapy which left me with many unpleasant side effects. My wife wanted me to try something natural, she knew about CBD oil. Luckily, we met Miriam, who is a trained nurse and I had a proper consultation before she advised the dose and frequency of the drops I took. I have since gone from strength to strength, what is more, an unexpected benefit is, I was waiting for surgery on a haemorrhoid, I was told to wait two years but it has completely disappeared since taking CBD, plus my blood pressure has gone down. When you hear the word cancer, life changes in a moment, but I can honestly say with Miriam’s help and advice I have gone from strength to strength.” by Paul R. “I have suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 15 years which had progressed to an extent that my life was just totally miserable. Nothing seemed to help. I had constant pain, and had exhausted conventional medicine, but was still dealing with the numerous side effects. Then 3 years ago I developed breast cancer. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed and my life seemed over. 4 months ago a friend recommended I try CBD oil from Miriam at the CBD Dispensary and within 3 weeks I no longer needed the large amount of pain killers, my depression is lifting and most importantly I have got my mojo back and look forward to every new challenge!” by Maria C. There are many CBD products now coming onto the market, but for your health and well-being it is surely better to have the help and advice of someone qualified to advise and support you with no obligation, and who will treat you with pure, organic, oil that can help with over 100 different conditions, too numerous to mention here. Come and see me for a free, no strings attached, consultation at my dispensary in Dénia. Miriam can be contacted at the CBD Dispensary, Calle Marques de Campo No 46, 3rd Floor, Door 4 in Dénia. Fabulous Lips Nothing adds to a women’s beauty quite like full, luscious, youthful looking lips. That’s why so many women seek to achieve the perfect "lip look" they desire. Whether it is just a subtle accent along the lip edges or a complete lip make-over, Dr Karen Gardner, with 15 years' experience, knows just what it takes to enhance lips. Lip augmentation, in combination with permanent make-up to colour and define the lip border, creates the best results and avoid the need for lipstick and looks fresher than without make-up, you can still use lipsil or sun-screen. The most common filler used is hyaluronic acid, (e.g Restylane and Juvederm) which is also naturally found under the skin and lasts 6 to 12 months. Regular treatments make the effects last longer. It is very safe, and gives a smooth and natural effect when used correctly. These products are biocompatible and naturally reabsorb. Permanent products are not indicated as they are not so safe and are problematic. Ageing comes to us all, and its undesirable effects are to slacken the muscles of your face and loss of volume. This is what causes smokers lines and result in slack skin that appears to hang on your face. You can Before & after take years off your permanent makeup & filler. apparent age just by using lip fillers for the lips and to greatly reduce smokers lines. Recreating the cupids bow can be very beneficial to improve the shape of the upper lip. This gives you a fuller smile that shows the teeth and more pink lip skin. Visit Dr. Karen Gardner to find out about lips and smile enhancement.

Getting Cheeky at Clinica El Arenal Over the past 2 months we have been looking at some of the top cosmetic procedures currently sweeping the globe following the rise of fitness bloggers, fitstagram, and athleisure as more and more patients opt for procedures which will enhance the work they do in the gym. In March we looked at Tight Abs and Undetectable implants, in April we investigated Tweakments and Eye-brow elevation. This month we will look at Cheek implants and Bat wings.
Cheek implants Cheek implants date back as far as the 1950s and have a proven record for safe and effective cosmetic enhancement. Cheek implants add body and contour to cheeks that lack definition. Individuals with weak cheek structure, a narrow or flat face, or who have lost cheek contour due to the effects of age, can benefit from the aesthetic enhancement that cheek augmentation can provide. Depending on the patient, there is a choice to use dermal fillers or cheek implants. They are constructed from a variety of synthetic materials that range from fairly rigid to flexible. Cheek bone implants come in various shapes and sizes, and most can be custom shaped to a particular facial structure. When cheek implants are placed in conjunction with another facial plastic surgery procedure such as a face lift, brow lift, rhinoplasty, or eyelid lift, the implants can be inserted through the incisions made for those procedures. When not used in conjunction with other plastic surgery treatments, the cheek implants are placed on their own through small incisions made in the mouth or lower eyelids. The implants are placed into small pockets formed by the surgeon in the cheek tissue. The simplicity of cheek surgery and the relatively low cost of cheek implants make them an especially attractive cosmetic solution, with results ranging from slight changes to very dramatic changes, as per what the patient is requiring. Bat wings The term "bat wings" suggests that the patient has significant loose skin in her or his under arms. If this is the case the best treatment would be a brachioplasty or "arm lift" The demand for this procedure has increased more than 800% since 1997. This is the greatest percent change of any of the commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures. Much of the increase in popularity is due to the growing number of patients who undergo massive weight loss, leaving sagging skin. This procedure involves reducing the excess skin between the arm pit and elbow and returning the area to a more firm appearance, and a well-placed incision should result in a scar that is only visible when the arms are raised, and through the process of `Maturation` the scar will become less and less apparent. The above cosmetic adjustments and many more are undertaken at Dr Poole's clinic in Jรกvea. Come and tell us about whatever aspect of your body you would like to improve, and we will be very glad to individually assess any case and discuss every possible option in order to choose which one is best for you. First consultative visit is completely free. Dr Ignacio Poole: a certified Family Doctor / GP and a Specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery.

The Parkinson's Group At our last meeting we had a great time as The Rock Choir performed for us again. To begin they have exercises which help with their singing. This is also beneficial to our members with Parkinson's. Some of these are quite amusing. We all had our song sheets as well so the concert began. What a fun time we had and a great selection of songs. The audience participation was wonderful and a good time was had by all. With a few nibbles and drinks it was nice touch at the end. (The Rock Choir meets every Thursday in the Hostel Loreto Denia from 6pm and 7.30pm. Everybody welcome.) There are several other things The Parkinson's Group offer once you become a member including Reflexology, Chair yoga, line dancing and a cycling machine which helps you with your symptoms. We have many leaflets for your perusal which make interesting reading. We have a variety of presentations, all of which are very informative, and hope to have a dietician to visit us in the near future. We enjoy our day trips and have been to some interesting places. Our group is very friendly as are the helpers who take care of the refreshments. We are off to Ciudad Patricia in Benidorm soon to have a look round, so watch this space to hear about it. We meet on the last Monday of the month at The Help Activity Centre in La Xara at 1.30pm. Pat (our leader) always contacts you a week before to remind you of the meeting. Telephone her on 634 301 677 or contact the Help Office from 10am to 1-30pm on 96 642 7044 or just come along on the day.

"CLUB F!T has zapped me back 20 years..." Mariana Chambers from Jávea has only been a member of CLUB F!T for 6 weeks, but to say that it has completely changed her life would be an understatement. "Every morning I jump out of bed, looking forward to going to CLUB F!T, and wanting to be there already." says Mariana who continues "Before joining I was missing a spark, missing motivation, but now I have more energy, a purpose and feel really excited about exercising again." Mariana is an ex dancer and teacher and has experienced other gyms. "They can be a bit masculine orientated, with an emphasis of lifting weights but CLUB F!T is totally different, with a much nicer feel about it." So how did Mariana come to discover CLUB F!T? "Actually, my daughter's boyfriend was already a member and he recommended me to take a look." says Mariana. "Straightaway I was given a tour of the premises, and I could immediately see equipment that I had never come across before. Self-powered treadmills, Core Stix, and DrumBeat classes, all filled with people with smiles on their faces and who were clearly enjoying being there. And the facilities were amazingly clean, pleasant to look at, and even smelt nice. I could tell straightaway that this was not a sweaty muscle gym, but somewhere light, pleasant, and professional. And even more, everyone was talking with everybody else, being friendly and saying hello." "Having now been there six weeks, I am also very impressed by the classes themselves, and the way everything is done. Due to many years of exercising I have wear and tear on my knee and a delicate back and so I am very careful about jerky, rapid movements. I have been most impressed by how safe, how controlled, how expert the CLUB F!T equipment is, and how the instructors lead their classes. I am full of praise for CLUB F!T, the equipment, the teaching and the variety of classes which is extensive" "The truth is that I feel like I have been zapped back in time 20 years, and I have to say that this seems to be the case for everyone I meet at CLUB F!T. The club encourages you in a safe way, I frequently see ladies in their 70s going from one class to the next, strong and full of stamina, and with broad smiles on their faces. I can strongly recommend CLUB F!T to everyone". CLUB F!T is very easy to find, located 5 minutes away from the LIDL store in Jávea, at Centro Comercial Monver, Calle Roma No 3. What to do if someone has an Asthma Attack... Some British Expats say their hay-fever and asthma problems considerably reduce when they move to Spain. Perhaps this is because of less grass, less tree pollen or less air pollution than in the UK. But other Expats report that their breathing problems increase, perhaps because of the drier atmosphere, the dusty winds, or the yellow pine tree pollen. Most breathing problems can be helped by taking a Doctor's advice or that of a Pharmacist in a Farmacia, and usually taking an over the counter product such as an antihistamine. But increasingly more people have been developing asthma over the past few decades. It is thought that many of the lifestyle choices we make today - our housing, diet, and a more hygienic environment, coupled with a reduced number of childhood infections mean that our immune system doesn't develop as well, with this lowered immunity increasing the risk of asthma. Asthma can appear at any age. Symptoms usually start during childhood, but it's not uncommon for adults to get it. Certain things found in the workplace, such as chemicals or dust from flour or wood, can also lead to asthma symptoms, and some adults develop it after a viral infection. If you get asthma in adulthood, it's known as 'adult-onset' or 'late-onset' asthma. The statistics are quite worrying though, because asthma attacks kill three people in the UK each day. What is even more concerning is that many of these deaths could be avoided, so here is a quick guide as to the signs of an asthma attack, and what to do: Signs that you may be having an asthma attack include: · your symptoms are getting worse (cough, breathlessness, wheezing or tight chest) · your reliever inhaler (usually blue) isn't helping · you're too breathless to speak, eat or sleep · your breathing is getting faster and it feels like you can't catch your breath · your peak flow score is lower than normal · children may also complain of a tummy ache These symptoms won't necessarily occur suddenly. In fact, they often come on slowly over a few hours or days. What to do if you think you or someone you are with is having an asthma attack: · Sit down and try to take slow, steady breaths. Try to remain calm, as panicking will make things worse. · If you have one, take one puff of your reliever inhaler (usually blue) every 30-60 seconds, up to a maximum of 10 puffs. It's best to use your spacer if you have one. · Call 112 for an ambulance if you don't have your inhaler with you, or if you feel worse despite using your inhaler. If you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea then call our 24hr Emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-of-the-art ambulances (think intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and on its way to you. Never be frightened of calling for help. After an asthma attack You should see your Doctor or asthma nurse within 48 hours of leaving hospital, or within 24 hours if you didn't need hospital treatment. One in six people treated in hospital for an asthma attack need hospital care again within two weeks, so it's important to discuss how you can reduce your risk of future attacks, and for you to develop an Asthma Plan. Talk to your Doctor or Nurse about any changes that may need to be made to manage your condition safely. For example, the dose of your treatment may need to be adjusted or you may need to be shown how to use your inhaler correctly. Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. Call their Registration Manager Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (10am to 1pm every weekday). Home made Almond Nut Butter Peanut butter has until recently been seen very much as an all American food, but nut butters have become trendier and are no longer considered the domain of the middle classes or the Americans! Walk into to any large British supermarket; you’ll be greeted by an array of nut and seed butters from the obvious peanut to the more obscure pumpkin or sunflower butter. To make homemade nut butter is so easy and much healthier than the commercially produced products with added trans fats and sugar. Nut butters are great for a quick snack or a pick me up. We love it on toast with banana or a dollop on our morning porridge. To make basic nut /seed butter only one ingredient is really needed; the nut or seed! The rest are add on ingredients, such as salt, honey, dates etc; all down to personal preference. The trick is to roast the nuts beforehand, this ensures a nuttier and creamier butter. Roasting the nuts also aids digestion and absorption. Resist the urge to add water or oil as the nuts will eventually release their own natural oils. Ingredients 500g unsalted almonds with the skin on or nuts /seeds of your choice. 1 teaspoon salt, optional. 1 teaspoon cinnamon, optional. Honey to taste, optional. Method - Heat oven to 190ºC/170ºC fan/gas 5.
- Spread the almonds on a baking tray. Roast the nuts for 10-12 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. - Once cool – roughly chop the nuts. - Tip the nuts into a food processer / blender. - Add the optional ingredients and blend for 12-15 minutes or until the mixture begins to look completely smooth and creamy. Some food processors /blenders might take longer. - Mix well, taste adjust /add salt /dates etc. - Store in a glass jar, it will keep up to three weeks in a fridge. Spring is in the air! At Lotus Interiors we like to stay up to date with all the latest trends and we are absolutely loving the ombre technique and how it is being interpreted into some beautiful fabrics for your home. Ombre Less hippie than tie-dye, but more graduated than dip-dye, ombre is a graduated-colour technique that has swept home decor, fashion, hair, nails and even baking over the past few years. While one would think that baked goods and nails would signal a tipping point, designers are transcending trendiness by finding new ways to interpret ombre around the house. Fabric Interpretation One of our core suppliers ALHAMBRA captured the essence of ombre in their spring season ‘Sapori’ collection. Sapori, meaning ‘flavours’ in Italian, is Alhambra’s latest ode to colour innovation and we love the six eye-catching colour palettes already used to great effect in some of our clients homes: Night blue, pistachio, aqua green, raspberry pink, lemon zest and warm grey. The ombre technique is also filtering through in our latest sheers and voiles where the gradual shade change is beautiful by day but absolutely stunning by night where the colour variation really comes into its own. Most voiles come in natural shades but some suppliers are using blues and greys to generate the effect making them perfect for a more modern home. If you feel like a change at your windows and want to bring this beautiful style of design into your home then simply call us to arrange a no obligation home consultation, or pop to the studio to see the latest fabrics, we look forward to welcoming you soon!

Scale
I am a visitor of numerous design websites and I often pick up the odd design magazine because I am principally a garden designer and it is all part of keeping in touch with what is looking good, fashionable and interesting. But one thing often hits hard in my mind and it is all to do with size and scale.
www.charlesworthgardens.com
Some of the pictures I see are from the UK, or from small Spanish gardens in towns etc. But these gardens are very different to most of our gardens, or certainly those in my immediate working area. A small garden can be like an espresso and with some clever design you can get a garden space that is original, interesting and functional, creating a hard-hitting design overall and in many ways, I would like to be able to design more of these types of spaces. The reason being is scale and its affect on budget. I will explain. If a small garden requires a terrace area, you can build a terrace that is sufficiently sized for the space, with clever planting and shape. But because it is small you could buy a very expensive flooring material that could cost 60 to 100€ per metre squared and the total cost wouldn’t be that big. So, when you apply that to the whole garden you could have a brilliant highly finished garden space for 15,000.00€, all singing all dancing, planted everything.

So, when the size of the garden is 80m², that means your cost per metre squared of garden is 187.50€. But if you now wanted to apply that to a garden space of more like we have in our area of say 500m² (after excluding the house footprint) to do a garden of similar type finish at the same cost
www.femalefocusonline.com
FF - House & Home Page 31 per metre squared, you would now need a budget of 93,750.00â‚Ź, and this is my point. Scale changes everything. If you have a large space even to finish it to a basic standard, because of the shear quantities of material you have to use, the price naturally increases by large amounts.
This then carries throughout the whole garden, more irrigation, and larger plants. A small plant in a small garden looks fine, drop it onto a 3,000m² plot and you wouldn’t even see it. We are specialists in creating designs and gardens for our customers both small and large, but it is only with my help, knowledge and guidance that we can really get as much as possible for our customers to create the most interesting spaces. It is sometimes why we create smaller unique spaces within a larger garden, as it allows us to compartmentalise the design and create separate budgets for each area. It also allows the customer to deal with the garden in more bite size pieces and, doing this in the correct order means we deal with the right section of work first, so we don't box ourselves in and create more cost for the customer in the future. Big gardens are great to do, and they look amazing when they are finished, and I know a lot of people who rely on Charlesworth Gardens to do this, but I still love the little jobs, they can be fun and punchy and look amazing, while not costing the earth.
Plants of the month They are beautiful and stunning with their drooping flower clusters, Wisteria Sinensis the climber, and Robinia Pseudoacacia the tree. I have photographed the white flowering version as opposed to the purple. Both are very showy plants due to their spring time flowers and are popular and easy to grow here. They will both shed their foliage during the winter though, so they may not be the plants for people who want all year green. We can order plants to your requirements and budgets, just send an email letting us know what you want. Charlesworth Gardens are the Costa Blanca's leading Garden Design and Landscaping Specialists creating and supplying everything you desire for your garden.

FLATPAXABIA going from strength to strength and looking to expand..... interested? The FLATPAXABIA story started with an idea back in the Spring of 2007 - we watched my sister Kate furnish her apartment in Jávea with IKEA furniture. Although she was very pleased with the end result, she seriously questioned whether she would have shopped at IKEA if she had known the time it would take from beginning to end! The driving, the shopping, the queues, the tills, the loading, the driving back, the unloading, the unpacking, the assembling, the clearing away of packaging, not to mention having to take back or change something! Our first shopping trip was in May 2007 and 11 years later we are a busy business - still passionate about what we do - meeting delightful clients every year. Our family business has been a wonderful journey of hard work and enthusiasm - exclusively shopping at IKEA - we have learnt so much over the years to enhance our service. We thank everyone we have worked with - all the local support - all the clients - without a combination of all of this our business would not be as successful as it is today and the journey would not have been so much fun!

ARIES Someone keeps telling you what to do and you are struggling with taking 'orders' from them. If they won't take advice on how things might work better a different way, then see it as a bonus as if things don't go well, it's not your doing. TAURUS Stop looking for shortcuts, there are none if you are going to do this job properly. Don't give up either, you are not a quitter and will feel such a sense of achievement when it's done. GEMINI The more you try to sort things out this month the more difficult they seem to become. Just go with the flow, if it was meant to be it will happen. Those close to you are really trying to help you even if it doesn't feel like they are. CANCER It just seems to be one step forward and two steps back with everything at the moment. Whatever you try to do seems to take twice as long and double the energy. Fortunately someone will come and give you the support you need. LEO A project which was put on you is now actually growing on you. Whereas you saw it as a chore, you can now see the benefits of it all and are actually looking forward to the outcome. VIRGO You are pushing yourself too hard and making unrealistic deadlines. Don't feel guilty taking some time out, without the rush the job will turn out better than you could imagine.

LIBRA You need to start organising and delegating more efficiently and not leaving everything to the last minute and then passing it over in a rush. A friend and partner clash over your time. Sort it out before it becomes a much bigger problem. SCORPIO Plans have hit a hitch and you think you might need to start all over again. Get a second opinion and see if you can keep going with a few tweaks. Alternatively it's back to the drawing board. SAGITTARIUS Money is an issue and you need to think long and hard before committing yourself to anything else. Saying no to a few things is not the end of the world. Saying yes to everything is much more dangerous, leaving long term problems. CAPRICORN Too much pressure on someone could lead them to give up on your plan altogether and that is not good for anyone. Working as a team and sharing responsibility is the only way this will work. AQUARIUS A memory from the past keeps coming back and you have been wondering what to do about it. A chance conversation will give you a different perspective and possibly the answer. PISCES Giving more than you are getting back can be very tiring. You need to make sure the balance is correct or you will start to feel negative about the relationship. It doesn't mean you have to stop helping, just make sure they know when you need their support.

The Arts Society Marina Alta: 100 years of modern Art MS LINDA COLLINS: Linda was employed by the Historic Royal Palaces for more than twenty years before becoming an independent lecturer and lecture organiser. Ms Collins holds a BA(hons) in Early Italian art, and an MA in the works of Georges de la Tour. She is a curator of the paintings in the Royal Collection particularly in the New Cumberland Art Gallery at Hampton Court Palace. She works as a freelance lecturer at the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Modern she also has a special interest in Paris and French Art in all its highs and lows of Society. 100 years of Modern Art – with scepticism and lots of humour! The opening of Tate Modern in 2000 took London by storm. Thousand more visitors than expected piled into the building. Modern Art in the capital became more fashionable overnight. But for many visitors, looking at Rodin’s ‘Kiss’ for example, they found it difficult to see today why it was modern. Ditto for Monet’s ‘Waterlilies’. But we are looking at these pieces with a hundred years separating us and them. In that time, both these works have been accepted into the mainstream and cease to shock us any more. We see them on mugs, umbrellas and fridge magnets – they have lost their ability to shock us. We can see perhaps why the Fauves created such a stir by their use of completely unnatural colours instead of shading, but the ‘Kiss’ just looks tame these days – beautiful, but tame. In its day, however, to see a natural and unidealised body portrayed – a real person in other words – was quite shocking. Marble was more generally associated then with tombs or classical statues than with real, live bodies. Rodin has taken the Dante story of Lancelot and Guinevere and turned it into a sculpture. The fact that these two were brother and sister-in-law would probably have added to the scandal. Notice, too, that it is Guinevere who has Lancelot in an embrace rather than vice versa and it doesn’t look like she wants to let him go anytime soon. But we are made of sterner stuff these days and it takes a lot more to shock us. A dead cow perhaps – or an unmade bed? It is fascinating to look at works of 20th century art and set them within their own time. For example, Bridget Riley’s Op art stripes were just perfect for their time in the 1960s. No need for experimenting with drugs – just stand in front of a Riley painting for a while, stare at the centre until it moves and voilà. Or perhaps many people did both at once…. Coffee is available prior to the presentation, and a glass of wine or soft drink afterwards for a socialising period. Sponsors: Blevins Franks. Venue: Salones Canor, Teulada Doors open: 10am. You must be seated by 10.55am. for a prompt start at: 11am. Visitors are welcome for a payment of €12 per presentation. Ánimo, the charity's drop in centre has gone from strength to strength this year, with more and more people coming for both advice and the social contact. The use of Hospital Ferris at Fontilles is also increasing and Elaine was pleased to advise that the charity will be increasing its level of accommodation there in the near future. She then praised the members and volunteers for the part they had played in the charity’s success, emphasising that everyone is an important member of the team, irrespective of their role. Grupo Garcia – Where Experience and Innovation Count
Grupo Garcia is a group of real estate companies with more than 25 years' experience in the real estate sector, helping their clients – buyers, sellers and collaborators – in everything related to buying and selling property. Under the Grupo Garcia umbrella, there are 3 distinct companies, each specialising in one particular area in order to be the most efficient in selling your property. GARCIA VILLAS has offices in Jalón (pictured) and Jávea and specialises in selling property old and new, including plots, to both inland and coastal buyers. BRASSA is the most recent addition to the Garcia team, and is based in the heart of Moraira. By keeping the name and adding the Garcia Villas values, it has been quick to build on its existing foothold in the area. GARCIA COSTA specialises in new developments along the Costa Blanca from Finestrat to Oliva. The local office is in Jávea but interestingly, they also have just opened an office in the heart of Madrid, bringing a whole new set of buyers to the Northern Costa Blanca. What this means for owners wishing to sell is that you automatically get 4x the exposure than a stand-alone agency, you get a wealth of locally focussed experience (e.g if you’re going to sell in Moraira, you need an agency that knows the area intimately), and you get a depth of marketing from your property internationally that few can even hope to match. When selling your property, it can be hard to choose the right agent. With 3 companies, 4 offices plus intensive online marketing, a call to one of Grupo Garcia’s companies is a must. Call their central number 96 648 2480, or visit www.grupo-garcia.es to find your nearest office.
