The meticulously designed collection consists of 26 beautiful specs and six chic prescription sunglasses. The contemporary eyewear boldly expresses the creativity of the fashion house, featuring premium acetate, daisy motifs and ultra-slim silver metal frames. Our favourite colour combinations include white sides and neon, and ’80s-esque flecks that glint in the light. Standout pieces in the collection include a pair of jet-black, cat-eye sunglasses, confetti-like pops of colour and oversized square statement sunglasses completed with the iconic daisy detailing synonymous with the MARC JACOBS brand. The collection is priced from 199€ for two pairs. Over the last three decades, MARC JACOBS has found a home in 80 different countries, making its brand appreciation truly global. The man behind it all is Marc Jacobs, who moved to the Upper West Side of New York in his teens to make it big as a fashion designer. His roots began in couture: Marc was a creative director for Louis Vuitton for 17 years before striking out on his own with his namesake label MARC JACOBS. Now something of a cultural touchstone, you can see his quilted bags on the arms of fashion lovers across the globe and his name on the designer high streets of every major city in the world. The MARC JACOBS collection is the latest big name to join the Specsavers Ópticas designer range at the Jávea and Calpe stores. The range includes the latest styles from some of the most fashionable names around such as HUGO, Converse, Karl Lagerfeld, Hackett, Pierre Cardin, Red or Dead and Superdry. Easter was not good at all and it was such a shame, not only for the holidays makers, but for the residents and the businesses. So many rely on this time to boost their sales after winter and for the extra work with the start of the season. It was good to see the community rally round to help those who were so badly affected and hopefully by the time you are reading this some

'normality' has returned. Also by the time you read this Spain will have voted and know who we have in charge. I am not going to make any predictions as so many curve balls have happened in voting recently across the globe. Let's just hope that whoever gets in has Spain's future and not theirs as the main focus. A Mini Guide to Power of Attorney in Spain

• Are you purchasing/ selling property in Spain? • Are you unable to attend at the notary to sign the purchase/sale of your property? • Wouldn’t it be ideal if your lawyer took care of the purchasing or selling procedure? With power of attorney your lawyer will be able to go through all the above and more. Let us explain. Definition The power of attorney (POA) is a document in which you will appoint someone legally to act on your behalf; in this case, a lawyer. Trying to understand legal procedures such as purchasing or selling a property on your own can end up with expensive fines, stress, wasting time, and going around in circles, not getting anywhere. So, when it comes to important aspects such as purchasing, selling property, and tax, we always recommend our clients to do a power of attorney to allow your lawyer to act on your behalf. It's the best way to make sure that all the legal aspects are taken care of correctly and efficiently. How can it be used? When you purchase or sell property in Spain there will be several steps necessary. Here are some of them: • NIE number (fiscal number to legally buy or sell anything in Spain) • Check to see if the property is fully legal • Opening a Spanish bank account in case you don’t have one yet • Utilities and community name change – direct debits set up • Suma Tax details changed – direct debit set up • Signing of the title deeds on the official day

where the ownership of the property will be changed at the notary, to the new owner’s name. Without power of attorney your lawyer could not carry out any of the previous steps on your behalf. Hence power of attorney is the essential document to begin with and to provide peace of mind. In other words • If you have not got an NIE number, you will have to go to the police and apply in person. • If you don’t have a Spanish bank account, you will have to go to the bank to open it yourself • You will have to be present on the day of the signing of the property purchase or sale In short, in many cases, power of attorney is the best way to make your life easier in Spain. You will therefore not have to deal with the complexity of the Spanish system; your lawyer will do it all on your behalf. We would love to speak with you It is extremely important that our clients have the correct information all the time, so we will be delighted to talk with you. Have you got any questions? Please give us a ring at 96 532 1193 or send us an email to admin@sun-lawyers.com. We’ll be happy to hear from you!

House Insurance With many Expats returning to Spain to enjoy the summer, and property being rented out, it is essential to make sure you have the correct house insurance. I appreciate there are very cheap policies around and they claim that they insure everything. This of course, is wrong. You cannot expect to pay a small premium and be insured for everything, including total loss and new for old. On our Expat policies, there is the option for Accidental Damage. According to my Claims Department, most claims in the home are due to accidents and not to be covered in these situations, could be costly. Liberty Seguros provide a bona fide accidental damage cover on both contents and house. With regards to contents cover, you must remember that unlike the UK, your kitchen is included in the contents, not the buildings cover. Therefore please be realistic when calculating the amount you will require for your contents. Another grey area is the water damage and excess water consumption. Liberty Seguros provide cover in the event of an unexpected large water bill due to leaks and there is cover available up to â‚Ź1000 towards your bill, providing all requirements are met, part of which are the previous 12 months of water bills. The Liberty home policy automatically provides public liability for your dogs and we can also include optional cover for dangerous dogs. A further unique option is cover for your specific jewellery items away from the home. If there are any changes to your property, please remember to inform your agent, so your policy is always totally up to date and all the correct covers are in place, as in the event of a claim, incorrect details on your policy will affect your claim and could result in refusal. If your contents or building are under insured, this will affect any claims. Please reflect on these issues when accepting a cheap policy. It can be a false economy with regard to your biggest assets, your home. If you would like more information, please contact one of our offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit our website www.jennifercunningham.net.

Exhibition of Impressionistic Watercolours by Lanie Widmar 3 May to 31 July - DeliCafé, Altea La Vella, Alicante

Lanie Widmar is a former architect, with nearly 30 years in the corporate design world, who decided to move on to focus on painting watercolours in the impressionistic style. Originally, from Laguna Beach, California, she moved to Altea, Spain in 2016. Lanie’s paintings are a result of experiences in the field that inspired her sense of awe in the beauty of the European landscape. She is particularly drawn to villages, and monuments that mark a historic place in mankind’s journey on earth. Lanie spends her time traveling in Europe to sketch and paint historic monuments and villages in the Plein Air method of painting. Her transparent watercolours are described as vibrant in colour, interpretive in style with bold compositions. She is represented by UGallery, San Francisco, USA. Lanie will exhibit her watercolour paintings at DeliCafé, Carretera Callosa, No:15, Local 11, Altea La Vella, Tel: 722 319 648. The exhibition of paintings will be on show from 3 May to 31 July, Wednesday through Saturday from 8am to 4pm, and Sundays from 8am to 3pm. WE MAKE YOUR NEW SPANISH VILLA COME TOGETHER. Literally. Many people dream of building their own house in sunny Spain. And why not? Over the last few decades lots of people have bought a property in Spain “off plan” and have since enjoyed their time holidaying or living in their property. Unfortunately though, many stories you hear are tales of woe with a new build project taking years, costing much more than ever envisaged, or even never being finished at all. With us at M3BT your dream of owning your own home in Spain will be done safely within 10 months, cost effectively and you WILL receive the keys! As a promoter we have exclusive access to plots in the region with spectacular views of orange groves and the sea, and within 20 minutes of the beach. At M3BT we use a build method that accelerates the build schedule by having specific building phases in progress simultaneously. Such building methods are a “new normal” around the globe, as viewers of TV programs like Grand Designs will be used to. In short, at the very same time that the ground works and foundations are being laid, the structure of the house (whether wood or steel frame) will be being manufactured off site, and then transported to the site when ready. The buyer can choose all their interior styling early in the process so that all products can be ordered and be included for installation. Once the build process is underway our client receives regular photos and progress reports. Each month the appointed architect certifies the work achieved in the preceding month; reflecting the percentage of each component of the build which is then charged in the monthly invoice. M3BT always deduct a retention from each invoice which is retained until all agreed snagging is finished. This process is notarised in a contract, and is fully binding. We appreciate that the cost of a new home is for most people the biggest financial investment they are ever going to make and so we take our role very seriously in this investment. We welcome the challenge; we take care of your new home from conception and commit to deliver your dream home in sunny Spain! Do you have a dream project in mind? Give us a call to discuss how best we can make it come true! Call 618 084 156 or visit www.m3bt.com.

Walk Your Way Well by Niamh O’Sheehan Have you seen how your doggie gets all giddy when you holler “walkies”? Could it be that they have a deeper appreciation for the value of a good leg stretching? A change of scenery, the exercise, the fresh air! What’s not to love? In 2017 I temporarily lost my marbles and took off on foot to undertake the 800km route of the Camino Santiago named the Camino Frances. Unfit, untrained and unprepared, little did I know what was in store! Amongst other things, this beautiful adventure was a game changer in my approach and appreciation of what walking can do for our physical and emotional health. And quite simply, I’ve not stopped walking since. And why would I? I’m blessed to live in a beautiful Spanish village a stones throw from the coast and nestled in the foothills of the imposing and majestic Montgo natural reserve. If you love to walk, or are concerned about your health and wondering what activity to undertake, there are endless routes in this area to enjoy for every fitness level and every taste. Is it a magical forest trail you fancy? Or is it the season for a winding flat circular path through orange orchards heavy with fruit or cherry blossoms in all their glorious bloom? Maybe you’d like to undertake a challenging ascent with rewarding 360 degree views? Whatever your age, fitness level or scenic preference you can find it all on our beautiful doorstep. In the coming months I’d love to share some of my walking experiences with you all. And if just one of you boots up and hits a local trail then my job here is done. Each month I’d also like to use my favourite publication (that’s you Female Focus!) to offer everyone a new “WalkingWord” and “TechnoTip”. Please don’t hesitate to drop me a line (niamhosheehan@hotmail.com) if you have any questions or suggestions. In the meantime; Go for a walk! WalkingWord: CAMINO is a widely used Spanish word that you’ve probably already heard but may not understand fully. It’s a beautiful word with many meanings. It translates to PATH or WAY and, like in English, it can refer to a path or trail along which we walk through a section of terrain or a passage through life. You will stumble upon many Spanish feel-good quotes using the word camino. Here is one to google and always worth remembering; “Por muy alta que sea una montaña, siempre hay un camino hacia la cima”. TechnoTip: This month's top tip is to download and play around with an app called WIKILOC. In short, this is an online community where people share GPS walking routes. It is a user-friendly way of finding trails and way points near you or in an area you intend to visit. Don’t let new technology intimidate you. This app is contributed to and used by walking nerds just like me! It’s super easy to follow and an incredible resource.

Introducing our new super skin booster – PROFHILO® Everything You Need To Know About Profhilo If you’re looking to restore that natural glow from your younger years and tighten up skin that shows the signs of aging, Profhilo injections will be a great option for you. How Does Profhilo Work? Profhilo is a breakthrough in the field of anti aging. It is used to jumpstart your skin’s ability to produce collagen, which diminishes as we age. Collagen is responsible for the firmness of your skin and is one of the key facets to a youthful appearance. Over time, aging, exposure to the sun, pollution and other elements break down natural collagen in the skin, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. Profhilo not only acts as a moisturiser when it is injected under the skin, but its properties will help your skin produce the collagen it so desperately needs to thrive and look supple. This hyaluronic acid formula, Profhilo, is not a filler, so it will not plump up your face or make you look puffy. Instead, it will enhance your skin’s elasticity, tighten it and help reverse common complaints such as fine lines and wrinkles.

How Invasive is it? Profhilo is a quick procedure. From start to finish, the administration of Profhilo takes less than 30 minutes. The downtime is minimal, and you can even return to work the same day. The beauty of Profhilo is that it is long-lasting and requires minimal maintenance each year. After receiving your first treatment, you will return a month later for a second treatment. You will continue to see results improving through weeks 8 – 12, you will only need touch up or maintenance every six to nine months. ZEN - SMILE - SPA, Calle Jorge Luis Borges 8, Jávea. “The bitter sweet truth about grapefruits and pomegranates” Living in a country which is renowned for producing wonderful fruits, I have become concerned that many of us are not aware of the effects that grapefruit and pomegranates can have when eaten or drank, by someone taking regular medications. These fruits have a chemical reaction to ingredients within medications taken for many of our daily health problems. For example:- some tablets taken for high blood pressure, some antibiotics, some tablets taken for high cholesterol (statins), immunosuppressants for transplant patients, along with others. I met a lady in 2008 whose body had rejected her transplanted kidney, as unknowingly she had eaten grapefruit for breakfast every day. It has been clinically proven that grapefruit and pomegranates can certainly interfere with the effectiveness of drugs on a major, moderate and mild basis. I am not a doctor and speak from personal experience but recommend that you “always read the leaflet thoroughly”. You will receive this leaflet with your medications, and it may be helpful to know that the Spanish word for grapefruit is ‘pomelo’, and for pomegranates it is ‘granada’. You can google the name of your medication for further information, or of course ask your doctor for further information on these fruits as well as other fruits and vegetables which can reduce the effectiveness of certain medications. Better to be safe than sorry. Belinda Crick.

Struggling With Menopause? Suffering needlessly due to hormonal imbalance? By Clinica Alegria, Calpe Menopause is currently a hot-item and it’s great to see that people are finally talking and writing about this very important topic. Despite the fact that millions of women across the world are currently going through menopause, it’s still very much a taboo! In her clinical practice, Dr. Nora Hendriks experienced the lack of information available about the medical side of menopause. What are hormones and do you need them? Is using hormones good or bad? It’s quite a medical maze for everyone; even for doctors. Dr. Nora Hendriks: "My mission is to put a stop to the taboo surrounding hormone therapy by explaining how it came about and why women should be safely treated with body identical hormones, and also how to go about it. Women do not have to lose the colour they enjoy in their lives just because they have reached the menopause. You are entitled to proper treatment of those unpleasant menopause symptoms. I have had the privilege of guiding many women in this complex phase of their lives. I cannot count how many times I have heard: ´Doctor, I finally have my life back´."

Frequently Asked Questions About Cosmetic Surgery: Part 2 If you are considering cosmetic surgery, then the first step is to schedule a consultation. Most probably you will be wondering what cosmetic surgery questions you should ask your potential surgeon. To help, we have compiled a list of the 10 most frequently asked questions about cosmetic surgery. We discussed the first 5 questions last month, and the second 5 questions are here below. 6 Q: So what are the steps that I should take? A: The process begins with a consultation, during which our staff will have an in-person meeting with you to discuss thoroughly every aspect of the procedure, the recovery time and your ideal results. During this time, you should ask to see before-and-after photos of patients with similar facial and/ or body features to yours who have had the same procedure you are planning to have, so you have a clearer idea of what results you can expect. 7 Q: Does it really matter where I have my surgical procedure? A: As the risks are minimised by using sedation instead of general anaesthetic, as explained before, we perform most of our cosmetic procedures here at Clinica El Arenal. If the procedure is more complicated, will take longer, or your health conditions require specific care, then we would recommend that the procedure is performed at a hospital. 8 Q: Will my medical insurance cover my cosmetic procedure? A: In cases where people need surgery for reconstructive purposes – for example, if they have been injured in an accident – insurance may cover part or all of the procedure. However, purely cosmetic surgeries are elective procedures, so insurance is usually not involved. Our friendly staff can help you determine if, and to what extent, you may be eligible for insurance coverage.

Female Focus May 2019

9 Q: Is plastic surgery considered an outpatient procedure, or should I prepare for an overnight stay? A: Most plastic surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, with some exceptions. Cases where we may suggest a patient stay overnight include the following: • If you live alone – after surgery, you may need someone to help you with basic daily tasks. • If you have elected to combine multiple procedures and it is necessary for us to monitor your overall condition and pain management. • On the rare occasion when complications arise during the surgery. 10 Q: I’m not ready to commit to surgery. Are there less invasive options to improve my appearance? A: Yes! There are several injectable dermal fillers on the market that can plump lips and cheeks, smooth out wrinkles and fine lines and restore a more youthful overall appearance. While the results from these products are not permanent, they are long-lasting, and unlike surgery, they require no recovery time. Obviously one has to be aware that these type of treatments are not always the right solution for a particular case and anyway, fillers are only advisable for small corrections. Lots of times we see patients who come to the clinic for help because they have had fillers done, and the wrinkle or the lip has been actually wrongly overcorrected and they are very concerned about their unnatural appearance. Dr Ignacio Poole is a specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery. He is also a certified family doctor / GP. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, however small, then there is an invitation waiting for you. Feel free to call into the clinic and find out about all the different services and procedures. The first consultative visit is completely free. Clinica El Arenal, Av Arenal 2, Javea. Toes on show! Here comes the sun … Are your feet ready to come out of hiding? The average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day, which adds up to about 115,000 miles over a lifetime! All this wear and tear on your feet can be harmful if they are not maintained properly. A pedicure is a cosmetic treatment for the feet and toenails that provides nail care and foot massages for men and women. Key benefits: • Receiving a regular pedicure can help the pedicurist detect early signs of corns, bunions and fungal infections. • Clipping, cutting and cleaning of the toe nails prevents them from growing inward and causing infection • A pedicure includes soaks in warm water and massages with oils and lotions that help preserve the moisture and integrity of your feet. Moisturised feet are less likely to get blisters, cracks or other foot problems. • Exfoliation of dead skin cells is important especially on the heels to encourage new cell growth and a build-up of hard skin can be painful and lead to other foot conditions. • Massaging promotes circulation and helps relieve tension in the calves and feet. • A good pedicure can be very relaxing. It helps to relieve stress and can be therapeutic. According to the British NHS information, massage therapy “eases tension, stiffness and enhances wellbeing”. Feet get little care compared to other parts of your body such as your hands and face. Healthy feet are vital to our overall health so don’t neglect them! The Darkness Into Light charity walk was formed 11 years ago in Ireland with the charity Pieta House. From its first walk with 400 participants, this has now escalated into a global movement. Following a good attendance in 2018, the Costa Blanca Darkness into Light team will be hosting the second annual walk, which takes place on Saturday 11 May. The walk will depart from Gogarty's Bar at La Zenia at 5.30am and the 5km silent walk will commence towards Cabo Roig, with a beautiful reflective pause at La Zenia beach, where walkers see the darkness turn into light as the sun rises. As you might know CBD is one of the most important compounds of the marijuana plant and offers a wide variety of health benefits, without any of the psychoactive effects (the feeling of getting 'stoned' or 'high'). The CBD molecules have a direct effect on a person's immune system and could therefore help with stress related problems, lack of sleep, high blood pressure, arthritis, ADHD, MS, epilepsy and the list goes on. CBD is a very promising, legal and natural product that can be used against an incredible amount of physical and mental complaints.

At the CBD Store Spain only their own high quality product line is being provided from Azoth, which has been produced in a 100% biological and natural way and this is proven in the lab reports that they provide with all the products available. The CBD Store highly recommends people to always ask for lab reports when buying CBD products, as they take the health of their clients very seriously. A lot of suppliers promise a certain content of the product which they cannot prove and because of this the chance of taking in harmful substances increases. Azoth is one of the biggest suppliers of CBD oil in the world and only offers CBD without any trace of the psychoactive compound THC, no added chemicals, pesticides or other harmful substances. Biological and natural is what they stand for. Their production process is under strict control and every supply is tested by a third part laboratory. In the near future their product range will be extended to CBD Raw Oils, which are extracted from the whole plant and offer an even wider variety of beneficial compounds. Keep an eye out for more news. Do not hesitate to come in for a drink and personal advice, our professionals will be at your service. Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Lambs to the slaughter CONFUSING being a grown-up these days; with all those nursery rhymes and kiddie stories being kicked into touch for one reason or another after falling victim to the politically correct brigade. Must be more than a tad bewildering for those who just want to tell a tale or enjoy a sing-a-long with the youngest family members – after all, they are the tunes and stories we all remember from being bounced on the knees of the silver-haired oldies of our own tribes. A school in Barcelona has just shrunk its library shelves by some 200 titles because of their “toxic” content in reinforcing gender stereotypes – the titles were apparently reviewed by thought police of the Catalan government in a library aimed at kids aged six... other state schools will be following the diktat, ‘by order of’. Farewell then to ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ – apparently the catalogue only included 10% of titles “approved” for being written from a “gender perspective”. It was stated that 30% were toxic – that’s spreading poison – and 60% were ruled offside (yellow carded?) for less serious infringements. Gender bias (er...grown up language there) is also accused of spreading its evil through books designed to teach the alphabet, numbers, and good behaviour. St George – patron saint of England and also a much-loved saintytype in Catalonia – famously rescued fair maid by slaying a dragon; but too much machismo here folks! Instead, meet Saint Georgia who does the same to over-sized green reptiles and is promoted to being a hero...well, it’s inclusive. The kids might have to wait a while to appreciate Game of Thrones but there are loads of strong females to focus on (geddit?). Catch ‘em young say the authorities, at the age of five children have already established gender rules ...just tell that to the sisters who are the pirates in ‘Swallows and Amazons’ or (if you dare) to Minnie the Minx and Beryl the Peril. All animals are equal; some are more equal than others – one of three pigs has a mortgage on a home that can’t be blown down. The best stories rise above stereotypes and take us all into a magical world above and beyond being PC; especially during that so short age of innocence. Stamp out gender violence! Now that’s a real rallying cry and probably approved by both St George and St Georgia to boot.

Download the app, spend €1 to unlock the scooter and (after the limited offer of 10 minutes for nothing) it is €0.12 per minute. Other companies are already offering electric scooters in Madrid – technology also allows the hiring of bicycles and Smart electric cars. It is a concept that will probably blossom across the country – a Dutch company is now offering cycle hire (the pedal type) in Jávea. Jump users are being advised to wear helmets, indicate direction changes, to leave the scooter legally parked – GPS tracking means big brother is watching – and, please, do stay off pavements. In fact scooters are banned from pavements (more police with ‘stingers’ needed), from bus lanes, on streets with more than one lane in each direction, and the M-30 motorway around central Madrid. They are allowed in bicycle lanes and paths (there are fleets of them circumnavigating green parks); on inner city roads where the maximum speed is 30km per hour – but AT ALL TIMES respect the humble pedestrian has right of way... that’s not grumpy journalist, it’s the law.

It can cost to talk! SPANISH police are to be given the power to check mobile ‘phone records of drivers involved in crashes in a new road safety measure. It is the latest move in a bid to cut the numbers of drivers distracted by using a mobile at the wheel – the illicit practice is said to increase the number of accidents by 20%. And so if lawmen suspect a mobile phone could have caused a serious accident they can apply to the courts in the hope a beak will grant access to records – use of a vehicle’s Bluetooth technology is permitted. Currently, using a mobile at the wheel attracts a €200 fine and three points docked from a licence – in serious accidents resulting in injury or death; it can lead to criminal proceedings and a possible prison sentence.

Scoot around town TECHNOLOGY these days means an app for everything and accelerating across the country are ways to get mobile by using your mobile (as in a device). Uber, the sometimes controversial taxi service, has placed 500odd electric scooters across Madrid – the company has also had the capital idea of giving a 10 minute ride on its ‘Jump’ service ‘gratis’ – absolutely free. The city is the first to test drive the new Uber ride in Europe. Female Focus May 2019

New animal rescue web-portal launched for Costa Blanca. With an estimated 1,000 animals* in rescue centres across the region, the Adoptapet portal has been launched to support over 20 charities with marketing and ultimately reduce the average time a cat or dog need to wait to find a new home. Currently the average time spent in rescue centres is over 6 months** and for many over a year. On the user side, Adoptapet will make it easier for families to find a local animal to adopt, and events to help sponsor the charities. Caroline & Mats Rennstam who are behind the non-for-profit portal comment: "There are an impressive number of engaged volunteers in the region looking after rescued animals and doing a great job of it. What we’ve identified however, is a need for people who would consider adopting a pet to easier find what they are looking for. The Costa Blanca charities have hearts of gold but often lack the time to do the marketing needed once they’ve made sure the animals in their care are looked after properly". Food in the Garden Well I think it's fair to say that my crystal ball needs to go in the bin. In the middle of March, when I wrote April's edition, the weather was more than hot for the time of year. But the weather patterns changed, and it cooled off again and gave us an unprecedented amount of rain over Easter. Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth

It's all good for the garden in the long run, but it means we will definitely have a later spring. Another good thing about temperatures being cooler for longer is your garden blooms into summer which often wouldn’t be the case on a hot year. No matter what the temperatures are doing though, there is nothing better than enjoying food in my garden, especially when it is cooked in the garden and using raw ingredients from within it. BBQs, Summer kitchens or just sitting out having the opportunity to take your own fresh produce or herbs and turning it into great tasty food is always amazing. There is a staple of plants that can be used for day to day cooking - a lemon tree and rosemary are absolute must haves, and both are great and grow easily. Delving further into the category of easy plants to grow are oregano, thyme and orange trees. All are simple and easy additions to your garden and when you make a pizza on your pizza oven or BBQ with your fresh oregano life is pretty tasty. Further down the scale there are an abundance of fruit trees including avocado and lime, soft herbs like basil, parsley, chilli plants and then vegetables, beans, peas, peppers, potatoes, some of which are far easier to grow than you may think but still require a little more effort than the earlier plants on the list. There are so many to choose from. I know that setting up to grow veg can be more difficult and time consuming but if you can create a simple (preferably raised) planter so you can condition the soil and a timed irrigation system will take a lot of effort out.

It's a wonderful and very peaceful thing to collect something from your garden and then use it in a positive way in the food you enjoy.

Plant of The Month. The Lemon Tree. Citrus Limon What a great tree, it's very easy to disregard these great trees yet they give us so much and not just in fruit but colour as well. Once they have settled in, they just keep going. My family and I use them all the time in cooking, luckily we have several really well established trees and when we hit the time of year (autumn) when most have the fruit has either been taken or dropped we suddenly realise we have to buy them‌.. Then you remember, when we lived in England, we always had to buy them, little yellow bullets in a little yellow bag all uniform in size. It's such a simple and satisfying task to collect them and use them within the home and it connects us just that bit more to the world we live in. So, go out, enjoy your garden and the benefits we truly have here, where we live.

Five Reasons why you need an interior designer in your project

The role of an interior designer can take on many forms depending on the scope and scale of a project; from simply providing curtains and soft furnishings, to getting involved in decision making at the planning stage of a reform or new build. For an interior designer knowledge, understanding and flexibility are definitely the name of the game.

So if you've not thought of using one before, here are our 5 reasons why it's essential you should involve an interior designer in your project. 1. Call in the experts Whatever the size of your project there are always numerous decisions that need to be taken to help realise the maximum potential in a new or existing property. Often an early wrong choice can result in a costly mistake. But by having a team of experts by your side you can be assured of nonbiased advice and get the best result from your project. An interior designer will work closely with you analysing your requirements and producing functional and creative solutions to meet them. You should benefit from their experience and creativity, opening your eyes to ideas and possibilities that you may never have thought of. Your design process should be inspirational, educational and rewarding and most of all, fun! 2. Making your space work Interior designers always strive to improve the environment where people live, work, relax and socialise, creating spaces that function effortlessly and enhance the well-being of the user. By using spatial planning, analysis of traffic flow and a good understanding of the functionality of a space, they are able to create the most beneficial layout and organisation of your furniture to ensure your home works perfectly for you. 3. Personalised interior schemes Obviously a key part of the role of the interior designer is to ensure that the end result is visually appealing and achieving this requires an open relationship between yourselves and your chosen designer. By recognising and understanding your personal preferences, and without imposing their own taste, your designer will pull together decorative schemes that include colours, fabrics, furniture, lighting and accessories and combine everything to create your dream space. And by having access to a myriad of suppliers, bringing in a designer to help furnish your home makes the whole process so much easier than sourcing everything by yourself. 4. A third party decision maker! Another role of an interior designer, which is often overlooked and undervalued, is the role counsellor! Projects that involve the home often have to please all family members, each with their own opinion on how the finished result should look and feel. It's at times like this where an interior designer can be invaluable by collecting all these opinions and using their skills and knowledge to deliver a neutral third party decision. Let the interior designer make important decisions to get a good end result! 5. It's never too early We can't tell you how many times we are brought in at the tail end of a project only to find if a builder had just done this or changed the size of that it would have made creating a beautiful interior a whole lot easier! Even down to simply allowing enough space for a curtain to be hung between a window and furniture, or creating a ceiling recess that’s large enough to hide the mechanism of a blind, you’d be surprised by the problems we encounter. Interior designers are there to add another dimension to the decision making process and even if the interior decorating seems a lifetime away, it's never too early to get us involved. So whatever project you are embarking on, if you would like our advice simply call us to book an initial consultation to chat about your specific needs and find out how we can help make your project a stunning success. What on Earth is R-32? By K&M Aircon Calpe

Depending on how much you know about how airconditioning works, you may or may not have heard about R-32. All air-con systems, particularly the split type, use a refrigerant (just like your fridge/freezer) to deliver you cool or hot air. The thing is, the way these things work isn’t so good for Global Warming. The EU has joined a worldwide effort to reduce the causes of Global Warming and is thus phasing-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Better for The Planet Currently, air-con systems use R410A which has a Global Warming Potential of 2099. R-32 Gas reduces that to 675 – nearly 80% less! And therefore, it’s so much better for the planet and reduces global warming! So that’s why new aircon systems must use R-32 Gas. Safer for You And it’s safer! Whilst R-32 is designated as mildly flammable, due to its low concentration the risk of fire is virtually zero. Even if the entire charge of R32 from your air-con were to leak, which is in itself, highly unlikely. The risk of fire is extremely low! Nonetheless, anyone installing, repairing, re-gassing or maintaining air-con must be fully trained and certified to ensure any risk is reduced and managed! All the main manufacturers are now supplying R-32 units, with many taking the opportunity to bring their styles up to date. K&M Aircon has been supplying, installing, maintaining and repairing air-con systems for over 30 years in our businesses in the UK and Spain. All our staff are not only fully trained, we are legally certified meaning you’re safe and sound. We work on all makes and models including Daikon, Gree, Mitsubishi and Panasonic giving you the widest choice in styles and budgets. We cover the whole the area under our AIRCON sub-brand. Our shop is in the heart of Calpe (Calle Pintor Sorolla), and we can be contacted on 96 587 4838 or visit www.km-aircon.com.

Benitachell Bowls Club News North/South Playoff – Benitachell Bowls Club Lions V Vista Bella Lanzadores

For the 10th year running BBC Lions secured the Northern League Championship. Seven months of league bowling ended at Montemar on the 1st April. It was a fantastic final game of bowls which went right down to the wire, the very last bowl could have gone either way, but, in a nerve racking last end our BBC LIONS team made it with a result of 3 winning rinks against 2 winning rinks from VISTA BELLA LANZADORES. All 5 teams played well with all players contributing but when it came to the tough finish praise must go to the very experienced lady skips of Maggie Lawley & Jacquie Roberts for pulling off fantastic shots with their final 3 bowls. The cup for the Winners was presented to the Lions Captain Dave Roberts – a job well done.

2019 Test Series

2019 Test Series in Cyprus saw Bowlers from Spain, Israel, Jersey and the Isle of Man competing against each other. After a great week of bowls in glorious sunshine saw Spain finish in first place for the Men with the ladies missing by one shot. The combined results giving the overall win to Spain. Cyprus came second. Congratulations must go to Greg Sperring of the Benitachell Bowls Club who won two gold medals.

Welcome to Summer 2019. Welcome to MINTT’s 10th season. How long ago that first 2010 season seems! The MINTT team remembers the trepidation they felt facing the project back then, but they had the imagination and drive to overcome the complications and luckily for us, the stars aligned so that MINTT was born. That first summer gave us many happy memories and made the team sure that they wanted to share all the summers with you. Since then there have already been 9 excellent seasons. The last one, well, perhaps we can say it was rather improvised, because it was the one that took the longest to get the licence so that Mintt could open for another 4 years with our friends in front of the sea. In the past we have always been able to open between the 1 and 15 May, thus giving lots of time to be able to infect our staff with the enthusiasm and desire to give the best service. But in 2018 we opened on 28 June, almost two months later than usual, and that took away the opportunity to be the same as before. This year we know that if everything goes well we will be with you from 1 May, giving us more opportunity to be fully prepared to again share in the best way the sun and the heat of our seasons. We look forward to a full 5 and a half months of good times together and we will put all our effort into making it so. In this, our TENTH season together, instead of printing vouchers in the local press we will be sharing our offers and promotions via our website: www.minttjavea.com and through our social networks. So become one of our network of followers, share all our communications and participate in draws to win gift vouchers of €25, €50 and €100. All you have to do is spread the word by sharing! We will also use WhatsApp for more direct communication with our customers, to be able to send you vouchers and offers so no more need to remember to bring any printed vouchers – this time they will all be on your phone. All participants on our private WhatsApp list will get gifts so you can consume for Free at Mintt. Thank you very much for being with us for so many years and from this moment we reiterate our commitment to find ways to share more time together, to always improve and to return to be the best place to spend your quality moments.

Charity shop of Calpe The cake stall at the Easter event at the Charity shop of Calpe had a bumper morning the other Saturday. Flapjacks, brownies and other homemade goodies were flying off the stall. Overall, the event raised just over €600 and along with a further €375 was used to buy food and personal hygiene products for the Municipal Food Bank – Calpe Ayuda. They also recently presented a chest freezer costing €350 to Calpe Ayuda – the Municipal Food Bank. The freezer will allow the Food Bank to provide a greater range of food to families in the town. Calpe Ayuda aims to ease the economic hardship suffered by the most deprived families, ensuring that they have access to basic foodstuffs. President of the charity shop, John Bridge, said that he was “delighted to be able to support Calpe Ayuda, as it helps families living in economic deprivation, particularly those with young children”. The photo shows John presenting the freezer to Jaime from Calpe Ayuda.

Arts Fair 2019 After the great success of our second Arts Fair in 2018, we are very pleased that the committee has decided to hold it’s third event on Wednesday 25 September 2019. This year’s Art Fair will again be at the well known and beautiful setting of Salones Canor, Teulada (details can be found on the website: www.marinaaltaarts.com). The cost of exhibition space this year will be dependent on the size of stand chosen, but should be in the range between €20 – €30 for the day. Access for display installations will be a available the afternoon prior to the exhibition. This is a great opportunity for local artists to show their art work to a much larger audience. Last year we had over 500 visitors on the day, who made some significant purchases, and hope to have many more this year. We do need to know how many artists would be interested in this year's Arts Fair. With an idea from you of how many artists would like to take part, we can begin the detailed floor planning and detailed costings. Salones Canor will provide bar service during the day for hot & cold beverages, and a selection of their notable tapas. If you or anyone you know would be interested in this year's Arts Fair, please email your name and contact details to artsfair@marinaaltaarts.com.

Cakes & Flowers Galore!

A fabulous afternoon was spent by over 80 people at Pepe's Restaurant in Alcalali on 1 April for an Easter-themed flower arranging demonstration by Lillian Coleman and her daughter Fiona. The expertise clearly runs in the family. The event, organised by Jalon Valley Help, included a sumptuous afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones and cakes made by some of the talented bakers amongst the charity's volunteers. As usual the ambience was great and this ever-popular event raised over 1100€. Jalon Valley Help wish to express their gratitude to Pepe's for use of the restaurant as well as to Lillian and Fiona for supplying the flowers as well as producing a selection of stunning flower arrangements.

The Moftag Bunnies

were busy at Pub Delfin on Saturday 13th April raising money for local charities. Sunshine and laughter brought about a lovely atmosphere as people shopped for homemade cakes & marmalades, looked for bargains at the Bric a Brac and enjoyed playing games.

Everybody was thrilled with the result of their efforts as a total of 1718€ was made and will all be distributed amongst local charities in Calpe, namely The Red Cross, Gargasindi School, Maite Boronat and Calpe Food Bank. Moftag would like to thank all their friends and members of the community who came along and supported them so well. Female Focus May 2019

Experience The Difference at Casas Ambiente When listing your property, there seems to be an endless choice of estate agents to choose from. It can be a daunting experience, so it begs the question how to make it a more enjoyable experience. Well it all comes down to the different ways your estate agent approaches you as a vendor. And choosing Casas Ambiente in Moraira will show you a different experience, one that’ll leave you confident and smiling knowing you made a great choice. Casas Ambiente is a family run business and has been established in Moraria since 1995. Currently run by mother and son Myriam and Rouben Brösen, they are joined by Judith and as from 8 May, Kristel. Between them they have simply years of experience. Their Dutch heritage means they have an eye for detail, an easy touch when dealing with people, of course a head for negotiations. Their international team is able to deal in English, German, Dutch, French and Spanish fluently… the best of all worlds. It’s the familiar touch combined with an over-riding professionalism that leads to long lasting relationships, and a wonderful after sales service. When you list your property with Casas-Ambiente, you’re left with the feeling that not only will they do their very best to sell your property, but they’ll stay in touch, keep you informed with updates and offer friendly yet incisive advice. It all adds up to a different experience which you’ll be glad to have experienced. For ourselves, we don’t rest on our laurels. Professionalism is about staying up to date. We undertake training regularly, and we are one of only a few agents who are CRS (Certified Residential Specialist) certified by the Real Estate Council and working and being affiliates of the International Association of Realtors. If you’d like to ‘experience the difference’, you’re welcome to pop in for a chat and find out for yourself. Their office is in the heart of Moriaira on Avenida La Paz (the street with the Palm Trees leading down to the castle). The team can be contacted on 96 649 8595 or contact@casas-ambiente.com.
