Keeping an eye on diabetes Diabetes is the leading cause of vision impairment and blindness among working age adults. There are currently 415 million sufferers worldwide and it is predicted to increase to 640 million by 2040. This is a major problem for eye health now and in the future. To mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November, Louise Stone from Specsavers Opticas in Jรกvea and Calpe has put together the following useful information about eye disease Diabetic retinopathy to help you to protect your eyes. What is Diabetic retinopathy? Diabetic retinopathy, a condition which affects vision, occurs when the blood vessels in the retina are damaged by the changes in blood sugar levels. This leads to blurry vision which can often come and go throughout the day. How does it cause sight loss? If untreated, the condition can become more serious, resulting in the network of blood vessels which supply the retina suffering permanent damage. This can result in irreversible vision loss. How can you avoid sight loss? It is important that blood sugar level, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled. In many cases this can be achieved through good nutrition and healthy eating rather than medication, so with the right information you can take back control of diabetes and lead a full life. How can I check if my sight has been affected? Not all diabetes causes sight loss, but it is important to have regular screenings and eye tests so that any problems or changes can be monitored. Most complications can be treated; however it is vital that they are detected early. Once vision is lost, it cannot be restored. To see if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, take advantage of one of the free testing events taking place for World Diabetes Day. The sooner you know, the better you can take care of your health and protect your sight. There are five Specsavers Opticas stores on the Costa Blanca, in Jรกvea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura. They offer advanced eye tests using a digital retinal camera, allowing the optician to take a detailed picture of the back of the eye. These comprehensive eye tests are able to detect the signs of Diabetic retinopathy. If these signs are identified during an eye test, patients are referred to a doctor for further tests and treatment. To book your eye test and find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es.

I remember my first Christmas dinner in a house we rented in Fuengirola 27 years ago. We had just moved from Altea and it was my first attempt in the old gas oven. Everything came out charcoal black half way up and raw at the top! That time I could blame the oven rather than my cooking skills or lack of..... Denia Rock Choir Rocks Calpe U3A! On Thursday 18th October Denia Rock Choir went to Calpe to perform for the Calpe U3A at the Hotel Ifach. Despite the dreadful weather there was a packed audience to listen to the choir sing songs from as far back as 1966 up to the present day. As always Denia Rock Choir sang from the heart and this was reflected in the audience’s reaction. The final encore “Delilah” was wonderful with the audience singing along with gusto! "What an uplifting performance", "We hope you return next year" and "Best choir I have seen since moving to Spain", were just some of the comments received from the audience. Dates for your diary Denia Rock Choir are performing for Denia U3A at the Casa de Cultura on 15 November and again as part of the Javea U3A "Extravaganza" at the Parador Hotel on 28 November. We will be hosting our own Charity Christmas Concert on 7 December at Denia Casa de Cultura in collaboration with the International Relations Department of the Ayuntamiento, Denia. £20,000,000,000 Pensions Unclaimed in UK Is yours one of them?

by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain

20 billion pounds is a huge amount of money. According to reports in the UK Press (Financial Times included), that’s the amount of unclaimed pensions in the UK. It’s around £13,000 per person on average and there’s almost definitely people living here in Spain who are losing out! How do you find out, well that’s a FREE service we at deVere Spain provide during our complimentary wealth check. But before that, I just want to re-iterate 3 reasons why it’s now vital to check your financial position… 1. Interest rates are on the rise which means there is a negative knock-on effect to transfer values from UK Corporate Pension Pots. If you wait much longer to transfer your pension, you’ll almost definitely lose some of the value it stands at right now! 2. According to a report on the BBC website, Pension trustees in the UK are being urged by the government to be more conservative on transfer values. So again you run the risk of losing money if you wait. 3. And of course there’s Brexit. Whilst no-one knows what the outcome will be, the government has already signalled that tax free transfers will end. So straight away there’s a probable 25% reduction in your pension transfer amount. Yet again you run the risk of losing money if you wait. I don’t want to panic anyone into acting in haste, as a qualified financial adviser I am trained to be prudent in these matters. But the message is clear to me that if you haven’t done so, then NOW is the time to find out where you stand. And that’s exactly what we at deVere Spain offer, the opportunity to find out with a Complimentary Wealth Check. The cost: an hour or so of your time over a coffee. Why wouldn’t you! There’s NO OBLIGATION to do any further business whatsoever, but, there’s a good chance you’ll join others in enjoying a very pleasant surprise. If you’re even just a little curious, then call me or WhatsApp me, Steve Iball on 610 822 484 and have a quick chat and then you can decide whether to discuss further.

Congratulations to Sun Lawyers on the opening of their Calpe office. A truly native English speaking law firm. Sometimes when you go to a lawyer in Spain you wish that they really could understand you completely, deal with your every little concern, and that you can totally understand the answers. Because all too often the small nuances of the differing languages may cause things to be confused, misunderstood, or even lost. Sun Lawyers are different. They truly are an independent family law firm, and they truly do speak native English, benefitting from having a Spanish father who started the legal practice over 30 years ago, and from having an English mother. Pictured here with all the Sun Lawyers staff are the son, JosĂŠ MarĂa Lomax, and the daughter, Victoria Garcia Lomax, who both followed in their father's footsteps as lawyers and now run the practice. Their mother is also in the picture, along with Aunt Pippa who also works for the firm, as do other family members. The new office in Calpe is the 7th branch of this highly successful law firm, whose goal is to reduce the stress associated with your legal situation by explaining every step of the process and taking the time to answer your questions. They will listen to you, answer your questions and give you clear explanations of what your options are step by step. Every month Sun Lawyers write their legal article for Female Focus, and you can read for yourself (on the facing page) how clear and precise their advice is. The newly opened Calpe office of Sun Lawyers is located at Carrer La Santamaria, Bajo, Local 6, Calpe 03170. The office is easy to find and there is ample parking all around. 3 Essential steps when buying property in Spain (Step 3: Post purchase)

Welcome to the third article of the series of three articles involving three essential steps when buying property. Here are the steps: • Step 1: Pre-purchase • Step 2: On the day purchase • Step 3: Post purchase Step 3: Post purchase Once ready, the original public deed must be collected from the Public Notary and then be submitted along with the duly paid tax models to its corresponding Land Registry. We will change into your names all the utilities (water and electricity), community and council tax, as well as setting up direct debits from your Spanish bank accounts. You must be registered as a tax payer with the Spanish Inland Revenue for payment of the taxes arising from the purchase and for payment of your annual tax. No problem, will take care of it on your behalf. Other important recommendations Reserving your property To ensure your Spanish property is taken off the market you will need to sign a reservation contract and pay a reservation fee (deposit). We advise you not to sign a reservation contract or pay any money before first consulting a lawyer. Legal checks When buying property in Spain it is advisable to carry out a complete set of legal checks to ensure that the property does not have any problems or hidden defects that might affect you later. At Sun Lawyers, we will check many aspects including: • The appropriate planning permission has been obtained. • There are no outstanding debts attached to the property. • There is a mortgage. In addition, we will send an architect to inspect your property to confirm that it is structurally sound.

Private purchase contract At the private purchase contract stage of your purchase, we will negotiate with the selling party the most favourable conditions for you. It is essential to have a proper contract covering all possible scenarios. A "contrato de compraventa" agreement suits buyers as it brings penalties to sellers who try to change the agreed price of the property. Finally, a bilingual contract is normally drawn up between the parties but in case of a Spanish one, a full translation is offered to our clients. Have you got any questions? Please give us a ring at 96 647 1898 or send us an email at admin@sun-lawyers.com. We’ll be happy to hear from you!

M3BT found a plot in a million… Gandia is the second largest city in the province of Valencia situated on the Costa del Azahar and is becoming more popular with foreign visitors as its charms become better known. Situated about two kilometres from the beach, Gandia has a dual life as a bustling centre of commerce and relaxing beach resort. Being one of Spain’s principle orange growing regions the scenery is much greener than in the south of Spain. Gandia is steeped in history and its architecture hails from the 15th and 16th centuries; best known for the Borgia family during the Renaissance. The Passeig de les Germanies, is the tree lined promenade with fountains and benches nestled in the centre with plenty of modern shops, bars and restaurants, boulevards and parks set amongst the historical treasures including the Ducal Palace and Gandia Cathedral. Although rice is the popular dish in Valencia, Gandia prides itself on its own variation namely fideuà where noodles substitute rice and are cooked with fish and shellfish. But there is still ample choice for meat lovers. Equidistant to Valencia and Alicante airports Gandia is also linked to the national and European rail networks. M3BT have been building dream homes for 15 years on the Costa Blanca. They now have a unique plot situated 20 minutes from Gandia with magnificient views of the Safor Valley and sea. This flat plot is 1009m2 with plans to build a 284m2, 3 bed, 3 bath villa with a 10 x 5m pool. Our design team can create your choice of style from traditional to modern for your interior and exterior living space. We guide you through the build process with regular updates providing you with a quality product. A modern design has been suggested by our architects, but if you are tempted… the choice is yours. Wake Up Beautiful By Lynn Whitby of Looks Javea

Celebrity Helen Mirren was quoted recently as saying that having her eyebrows enhanced by semi permanent make up was one of the best things she’s ever done as it’s taken years off her appearance. Well, she’s not wrong. It’s certainly true that as we grow older, our eyebrows, in particular, become a little ‘sparse’ which ages us. Well, you’ll be glad to know that you don’t have to be an A-lister to achieve a younger and fresher look. Semi permanent make up is natural pigment deposited just under the very top surface of the skin by a qualified beautician. It is not a permanent procedure (such as we consider tattoos to be) and the natural pigment will simply fade over time. Clients often say they are frustrated because, without their glasses on, they have difficulty in applying their make up like they used to and of course, pencilled eyebrows simply disappear. Eyeliner is very popular as it’s very flattering and doesn’t run like regular make up can by the end of the day. Now you can wake up with eyebrows, eyeliner or lips 7 days a week. Semi permanent make up is suitable for all ages and skin types and is very popular with those who like to wear make up but don’t want the daily fuss. This low maintenance lifestyle also suits swimmers and fitness fans as well as those who don’t feel that they can apply make up very well. You can even apply different colour eye pencils or lipstick over the top, for a different look when you wish, so it’s flexible too. I believe that people should see you before they see your make up….. and not the other way around. Looks Javea specialises in ‘natural’ semi permanent make up and is available to you in salons in Jávea, Moraira and the surrounding areas. So if you would like the eyeliner you always wanted or to restore your eyebrows to their former glory, or have better defined lips then take a look at Looks Javea. You will find more information on their website www.looksjavea.com or, alternatively, why not call Lynn on 692 117 050 for an informal chat and she will be happy to answer any questions you have. Semi Permanent make up – not just for celebrities – for everyone. Why not? Wake up beautiful…..

Banish those lip lines forever While lip lines (otherwise known as smoker’s lines) never appear overnight, you may notice them very suddenly. It might even feel like you just woke up one morning with several new wrinkles above your mouth. Where did these little lines come from? Aging is a major cause of lip lines. This is because two of your skins most crucial proteins - collagen and elastin - begin to break down as you age. This makes it easier for wrinkles to form on your skin. To make matters worse, in women during the pre and post menopause, oestrogen levels decrease causing skin to be less hydrated and less plump in appearance. Muscle over activity of the mouth, such as smoking, pursing of your lips in frustration or sipping drinks through a straw contribute to the development of the lines but sun damage, alcohol and poor lifestyle are other leading causes. The good news is lip lines are completely treatable without any risk of a trout pout. What are the best ways to treat lip lines? BOTOX relaxes the muscles around the mouth to reduce vertical lines around the mouth and helps retrain strong lip muscles to produce more youthful plumper lips. Botox used in combination with filler give long lasting results. FILLER can be used to replace volume lost in the top lip and to decrease its length which tends to increase as we lose the support of the collagen. FINE FILLER AND MESOTHERAPY. Very fine filler deposited into the small top and bottom lip wrinkles will erase these completely giving a completely natural and rejuvenated lip free of lines.

HIFU/ULTERA can be used to help produce collagen naturally around the lips so thickening the skin and reducing wrinkles. PEELS AND LASERS. Medium to deep peels and lasers act like mechanical rubbers to leave a smoother fresher skin around the mouth. Each case is different and at Zen Smile Spa every person is assessed, and the ideal combination treatment provided to give a subtle, hydrated, youthful appearance. For more information visit www.spajavea.es or call 96 579 38 10. The photos show actual work carried out at Zen Smile Spa.

The Opn Rechargeable Solution Consumers seeking hearing solutions rely on professional expertise for guidance in choosing the device that will work best for them and for the support they need to succeed. Chris Elcocks is your local hearing professional and is delighted to share the news that one of his more popular hearing aids, Oticon Opn™ is now rechargeable! Easy, convenient and reassuring The short lifespan of traditional disposable batteries is often an unwelcome surprise to new users. Even to experienced users, disposable batteries are often perceived as expensive to purchase and a hassle to manipulate. Rather than changing batteries every few days (depending on use time, streaming time, and more), the user places the hearing aids in the charger overnight. The hassle and expense of changing batteries and purchasing batteries is a thing of the past. As there is no need to open the battery drawer, the challenge of manipulating tiny batteries is no longer an issue. Fortunately, if the consumer forgets to recharge the battery, a disposable zinc-air battery can be used! Convenience without compromises Convenience should not mean compromises. Rechargeable Opn users will get the ground breaking open sound experience with full 2.4 GHz audio streaming capability. They get a full-day's charge overnight and can still use ordinary backup batteries in emergencies. What are the benefits of rechargeable Oticon Opn hearing aids? Reassuring - Simply sit the hearing aids in a charger at night and wake up to full-power hearing aids each morning. Convenient - No need to replace batteries every few days, no need to open the battery drawer. Easier for people with vision and dexterity difficulties. Efficient - Save the time, money and environmental impact of buying hundreds of batteries per year. Disposable batteries are difficult to repurpose and a growing concern for future generations. Hybrid power - Enjoy the flexibility of using ordinary batteries anytime - forgetting to charge is no problem. Upgradeable - All new and existing Opn miniRITE instruments can be upgraded with the rechargeable solution.

Autumn Hues As Autumn arrives and Winter is on the horizon the wardrobes are emptied of shorts and the leggings, boots and long sleeves make an appearance again. With the change of season often comes a change of mood and the temptation of new looks. Caramel, pumpkin, cinnamon spice and warm molasses all sound like flavours added to those tasty milky drinks or scrummy cakes however these are some of the colour inspirations that are on the catwalks and in celebrity magazines this season. Raven black is another trend that is making a big impression, a rich shiny look that compliments darker skin tones. Copper tones are always a fabulous choice in Autumn as it works so well with dark and light skin tones. In the photo (top left) diagonal slices of bright copper were placed through the mid-lengths and ends to fall around the face with a hazelnut praline colour in between, yum! Warm dark roots and lighter ends blended softly to create a natural look with warmer blonde tones for winter, creamy or milky blonde taking the place of the platinum colours of the summer. Colour placement is as important as the colours chosen, colour should complement the skin tone and the haircut, all critical factors to get the most flattering look, not all of us follow fashions but can gain inspiration and have it personalised for you by the team at KRU. Soft curls and waves including the done, undone look are still popular. We create this look using heated styling tools curling away from the face, and then shake it out to leave beautiful soft waves. Alternatively, be in the groove with the Liverpool lasses and leave the salon with a pin curl set creating two looks in one; a barrel curl set up do and later take out the pins to create the Cheryl Cole big and bouncy blow‌. just before you hit the town‌ To book an appointment please call KRU on 96 646 3970 or call in to the salon on Avenida del Pla in Jåvea.

Turn Your Frown Upside Down! Resting Bitch Face (sometimes known as RBF or Bitchy Resting Face) syndrome is a very real condition which affects the facial muscles of millions of women, and men, giving them the appearance of irritation, unhappiness, or even anger when their face muscles are at rest. One of the most frustrating characteristics of RBF is that the expression rarely reflects the true feelings of the individual. Unfortunately this can have a negative impact on both personal and work relationships. Wrinkled foreheads, frown lines and the classic furrows which develop between the eyebrows, are all responsible for affecting women diagnosed with RBF. Sunken cheeks in particular are renowned for leaving women with a severe or annoyed appearance, while pursed thin lips are often accused of being judgmental. Drooping Mouth Corners is another one of the main symptoms of RBF, whereby the corners of the mouth droop downwards, thus giving the appearance of being constantly sad or annoyed. Throughout our lives our facial muscles are essentially trained to portray a single expression the more often they are used. For example when we scrunch our eyes, scowl or frown when we are concentrating, or when our face is in a neutral resting position with the corners of our mouths turned downward, the more likely it is that we will develop a deeply etched smile and frown lines. Treating RBF usually doesn’t require surgery! If you suffer from RBF, you are certainly not alone. And the good news is that for many cases of RBF there is a non-surgical treatment which is extremely effective. Applying a small amount of Botox or dermal fillers into the furrows, chin and anguli oris (the muscles which turn the corner of the mouth down) can not only change a person’s resting expression, it can also give them a better emotional outlook. Botox not only weakens the depressor muscle which softens furrows and lifts the area, but it also re-trains the muscles for a more relaxed and approachable appearance. Depending on the individual, the results last for approximately 3 to 4 months which is partly due to the muscles beginning to atrophy as they are used less. The results often look completely natural and in addition to using Botox, dermal fillers may also be used to plump the skin and diminish the appearance of frown lines, furrows, smoker’s lines and crow’s feet. Dr Ignacio Poole holds a Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Surgery and works with Botox, Dermal Fillers, and when necessary undertakes cosmetic surgery. He is also a certified Family Doctor / GP. Within the field of cosmetic surgery the use of newer technologies such as lasers now makes procedures such as face and eye lifts much more accessible and affordable. So if you wish to discuss getting rid of your Resting Bitch Face, to achieve a fresher, more cheerful looking appearance then why not call into our clinic and find out about all the different services and procedures. Of course every ‘body’ is different so Dr Poole and his medical team need to assess every case individually. Your first consultative visit is completely free. Clinica El Arenal. Av. Arenal 2, Jávea. I love every moment being a Good Care Group carer. By Heather Myers. I stood there a frightened little person going on my “Live in Carer” training course, I was soon put at my ease by the lovely people I met. I passed my training course, then I had my first placement. It was not an easy one! I met a pair of challenging sisters and it was hard work as one had Parkinson’s Disease and her healthy younger sister was very “Bossy”, I was up most of the night and was not sure I could carry on. Eventually I got on well with both sisters and the younger one asked me to come back to their placement. My next placement was a lovely lady well into her 90s, I only shared a week of her life before my break as it was a holiday cover, she was wonderful. She needed help to the toilet every 2 hours but apologised every time. It was my pleasure to be of service to this lady. A new placement was then found for me... then it was a gentleman. It was quite a demanding placement and we had many conversations mainly of his past and experiences, he played the piano and we had our song “Night and Day” he used to play it and I used to sing (problem is I can’t sing, but he enjoyed it anyway). I then moved on to a permanent placement, a wonderful man and his family were brilliant and supportive, he spoke English in the day and Spanish at night (he had dementia). I changed my placement to allow me to study “Health and Social care NVQ 2” which the company provided and I’m pleased to say I have passed. At this moment in time my placement is a fabulous lady who is 94 years young with mild dementia. Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Ooh La La! A new French revolution POLITICS can be a funny old game and Barcelona is currently in a bit of a stew – make that a pot-au-feu – after former French PM Manuel Valls announced he is in the running to become mayor of the city. The 56-year-old was Prime Minister in France between 2014 and 2016 under President Francois Hollande but failed to become the socialist candidate in the 2017 presidential elections for the top job – and failed in his bid to switch sides and snuggle up to Emmanuel Macron’s En Marche movement and again become PM under his new regime. Mr Valls has links to Barcelona; he was born in Spain’s second city – the leading candidate to be capital of an independent Catalonia. His folks were on holiday at the time and while he grew up in France, he is a citizen of both countries.

Suffering with Bunions? (or other feet problems)

www.femalefocusonline.com

He will stand as a candidate against independence – as yet on an undefined antinationalist ticket – and take on current mayor, Ada Colan. And Mr Valls was in the city to announce the move. Speaking in Catalan, he said: “After a period of serious reflection, I have taken the following decision; I want to be the next mayor of Barcelona.” Reaction was split both in the corridors of power and on the street; just like the ongoing independence debate. Anti-nationalists said there was “nobody better” to restore the prestige of the city and defeat separatism; former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont – who was removed from his position after a short-lived reign and currently resides in Brussels – said the Frenchman was a candidate who didn’t know Barcelona and was not known in the city. Spend, spend, spend SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has signed a deal with the populist party Podemos and its leader Pablo Iglesias to help bolster his minority government and avoid the country going to elections. Someone has to do the maths, but the agreement is an apparent Timewarp-style step to the left with next year’s budget. There is a pledge to increase the minimum wage by 22% to €900 a month – the biggest rise in 40 years; raise pensions (an extra €1 billion); invest more in education and science at a cost of €1.3 billion; increase benefits with an extra €850 million; and to increase paternity leave, costing some €300 million. In total, that’s going to be around €5 billion, give or take. However, such spending would have to get through Congress and needs support from Catalonia’s separatists - and also the Senate (Spain’s upper house) where the conservatives hold power. The plans would also need to gain approval from Europe which is worried about how to pay for such social measures. It believes Spain does not have the necessary finance – despite promises the cash will come from tax hikes (ouch) and the country’s economic growth; another risk with proposed new laws seen as reining in business. SPAIN’S leader Pedro Sanchez was met with a hostile reception from the crowds in Madrid on October 12 – the annual National Day holiday with its traditional military parades. Mr Sanchez was booed, jeered and whistled as he was driven through the streets in an official convoy to shouts of “Out, out!” and “Elections, elections!” The socialist PSOE leader came to power after a vote of no confidence ended the conservative Mariano Rajoy’s turn at the helm earlier this year. As Mr Sanchez took power he promised he would call a ballot; he has since said he will see out the current legislature which is scheduled to end in 2020. Meanwhile, in stark contrast, King Felipe and Queen Letizia – together with their daughters – were rewarded with a warm welcome and no doubt pages of photographs in Hola! magazine when they arrived at the parades. Madrid action beggar’s belief BUSKERS, beggars and those attempting to legally live on their wits in the Spanish capital are being asked to declare their income if they want a state handout. People applying for guaranteed minimum income benefits will need to supply a sworn statement detailing their street earnings – rather than the usual ‘random’ figure which would later be deducted from their assistance cheque. The authorities say it is to regulate the aid programme – apparently there are 30,000 families receiving help – but critics believe the bureaucracy is aimed at delaying payments to the needy and disrupting “survival income”.

It’s Time To Smile Again! Cosmetic Dentistry Gives you back your Confidence Most think of tooth whitening or veneers at the mention of cosmetic dentistry, but cosmetic dentistry is much more. Previously we talked about general dentistry and teeth whitening, but as we get older, our teeth suffer more and more. Teeth break, become discoloured, old fillings give way and all in all you can soon be afraid to smile. Our skilled, experienced dentists at BluDent can help improve your appearance, your smile and even your self-esteem and confidence. Smile enhancement can have dramatic effects on your overall appearance; even the smallest step can make you want to smile more. At BluDent with modern advances in dentistry, cosmetic procedures can range from basic colour correction to gum procedures, replacing missing teeth, and everything in between. It all starts with your first consultation where we sit and talk to understand your aims. We discuss your dental history and then examine your teeth one by one. We use high resolution cameras during the examination, so you can see what we see. Once the examination is finished, we discuss further your options and together make a plan. Options range from simple composite fillings, through veneers and if required dental crowns. We understand that the economics are of course a factor and we always balance treatment and cost to suit you. We offer the option to ‘pay as you go’ and go through the plan with (to suit) you – both time-wise and money-wise. But one thing is for sure, by the end of the course of treatment, you’ll see a new (you) smiling back at you in the mirror. One thing we want to point out is that our initial consultation is totally free and with no obligation whatsoever. We offer a level of skill and proficiency that only comes from years of broad experience and advanced training in the practice of dentistry, and we are dedicated to accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. We have specifically chosen to equip our office with some of the most advanced dental technology to ensure your optimal comfort, the precision and accuracy of your treatment, and safety of your care. With more than 26 years of combined experience, you can trust that you are in the most capable hands. You leave having had a totally professional examination and range of options. If you decide to continue, we’ll be delighted, but if you decide it’s not for you, then we’ll be glad to have helped. Our modern clinic is in Finestrat overlooking the beach just 5 minutes from CC La Marina in Finestrat / Benidorm. It may be a little out of the way but you can be assured it’s well worth making the effort to come for your first free consultation, we look forward to meeting you. See our advert for more information. Bludent is easy to find with easy parking. Patients come from miles around simply because they know they don’t have to worry and no longer hate ‘going to the dentist’. New opportunities to ask questions about Brexit in Alicante and Murcia In November and December, the British Consulate in Alicante is running a series of 17 events for UK nationals on Living in Spain and Brexit where British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris and her team will update residents with the latest information on Brexit and what this means for UK nationals living in Spain. Please see the table below for a full list of dates and venues. You will be able to speak to an expert from the town hall about your padrón and clarify how to register as resident in Spain under current rules. You will also be able to speak to local voluntary groups about the support networks that are available for UK nationals living in the area. If you have specific questions on residency paperwork or anything else about living in Spain and Brexit, please do bring them along to discuss with one of the members of the Consular team. BREXPATS IN SPAIN, affiliated with the British in Europe group, will also be attending to assist people with legal and financial advice and to update on their current position with striving to defend the rights of British in Spain. You do not have to be resident in each town to attend the events, since they are open for anyone who is interested in finding out more. For specific questions about the padrón it would be helpful to attend an event where you live. British Consul SarahJane Morris said: "As the negotiations continue, the consulate will continue with the outreach events that we have planned across the Alicante area to update citizens. "I continue to urge all UK nationals living in Spain to ensure you are correctly registered and stay up to date with the latest news, by signing up for email alerts, visiting the Living in Spain guide on www.gov.uk and following our Brits in Spain social media channels, including on Facebook.” Advice for UK citizens living in the EU can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/ advice-for-british-nationalstravelling-and-living-ineurope. We recommend following our Brits in Spain Facebook page, and to sign up for alerts from www.gov.uk to ensure you are getting accurate information. Female Focus November 2018

Don’t Be Afraid to Perform CPR If, while you are out with your family this weekend, one of them suddenly collapses in front of you, would you know what to do? Would your First Aid CPR lessons come rushing back immediately — or would you call 112 and stand back in fear of doing something wrong? Your answer could be the difference between life and death. CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and can double or triple a person’s chance of survival, especially if performed within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest. There is less brain damage, a great likelihood of survival, and less heart tissue damage. Far more damage comes from doing nothing. Hands only CPR: Never do nothing In 2012 The British Heart Foundation worked with Vinnie Jones to help teach the nation how to do Hands-only CPR. Watch the video on You Tube “Vinnie Jones - BHF hands only CPR” Giving rescue breaths helps survival, but if you don’t want to give rescue breaths, Hands-only CPR is still likely to increase a person’s chance of survival. Never do nothing. How to do Hands-only CPR When somebody collapses in front of you, what do you do? Check the person over. If they are not responsive and not breathing, then their heart has stopped working and they are having a cardiac arrest. Now, call 112 or if you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea (AAEdJ) then call our 24hr emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-of-the-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and on its way to you. Then you do Hands-only CPR. Lock your fingers together, knuckles up. Then push down, right on the top of the breastbone. Push down five or six centimetres. That’s about two inches. Push hard and fast about two times a second, like to the beat of Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees. Don’t worry about hurting someone. A cracked rib can be mended – just concentrate on saving a life. Keep this up until the ambulance arrives. So don’t forget. Check him or her over. Call 112 or the AAEdJ. Push hard and fast to Stayin’ Alive. It works. Hands-only CPR. It’s not as hard as it looks. Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. We cover the vast majority of the Marina Alta area. To become a member please contact Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (10am to 1pm every weekday). She is our Registration Manager, and she will work with you to pre-plan your address and a map / route into our systems to ensure swift arrival to your residence, even if it is inland. Cardamom and Lemon Curd

Sunshine in a jar, bright fresh and tangy this is a British classic using just four simple store cupboard ingredients sugar, eggs, lemons and butter. With an added Spice Sister twist of cardamom! It’s so quick and easy to make. Fresh homemade lemon curd tastes so much better than shop bought; it has a great lemony tang and the addition of cardamom takes it to another level! Ingredients 100g butter 3 unwaxed Lemons 2 Eggs 1 Egg yolk 175g Sugar 1 tsp Ground Cardamom 1 Sterilised jar Time: Prep; 10 minutes. Cook 20 minutes Recipe Using a grater – zest the lemons. Juice the lemons. A simple kitchen hack to yield more lemons juice is to warm the lemons before using. Microwave 20-30 seconds on a high heat; leave for a minute. Cut in half and squeeze out the juice. In a heat proof glass bowl stir together the lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, eggs, butter and cardamom,

Leave to cool and set before using. Keep in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before using. Serve on toast, great stirred through Greek yoghurt or use as a filling for a Victoria sandwich or topping on a cheesecake. The Spice Sisters are running Indian cookery classes in Spain and UK. A View From The South

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. 'Strickly' Not Dancing. My normal routine on a Saturday night is to have a nice weekend dinner ...curry, or as a treat fish and chips, a glass of wine or two then it’s off to bed to read a book. Why to bed so early I hear you cry!... Well it’s simply because I cannot stand the TV menu as offered by both the BBC and ITV. For me the thought of watching ‘Strickly’ Come Dancing or perhaps even worse The X factor was just too much to contemplate. On a couple of occasions I have tried to watch The X Factor ...I have sat quietly with ‘er indoors and attempted to enjoy the unenjoyable ...I have tried to hold my tongue as the four posers masquerading as judges enter the arena to pontificate on the weird and the not so wonderful that are paraded before them. As much as I tried, once the show actually started, I found it practically impossible to keep quiet and not comment on what was appearing before me on National TV. At this point a good book and the quite solitude of the bedroom seemed too good to be ignored ...so Saturday nights became an early to bed night whilst the X factor was on TV. However, a change has manifested itself in my Saturday night viewing ...I have found ‘Strickly’ come Dancing. Watched the show a few weeks ago whilst eating my dinner and found that apart from some aspects the show was very enjoyable. Don't get me wrong it’s the actual Dancing that I find watchable not the showboating of the judges (the men) or the parading of the two women hosts. Strangely, watching the show took me back many, many years to when as a young boy I used to on occasion watch the original "Come Dancing" show on TV. As I recall it was a contest between North and South etc etc and was less glamourous than the its modern counterpart. All in all, I find the show good early evening entertainment ...it’s the involvement of the celebrity amateurs that I find interesting, in that they are brought to a level of dance excellence that would be almost impossible for me to reach. As a young man I was a half decent footballer who had a good run at making the grade ...then I turned to rugby and athletics again with a modicum of success ...always sporty I could never have attempted the Cha, Cha, Cha or the Samba ...and the thought of the Waltz brings me out in a cold sweat. My ballroom as a young man was either the Cats Whiskers in Streatham or the Lyceum in the Strand. Suited and booted on a Saturday night myself and a few mates would attempt to gain entry to the aforementioned dancehalls ...attempt because you could never be sure if the Female Focus November 2018

In that event we used the Musketeers slogan of ‘All for one and One for all’ and simply went off to the nearest pub for several pints of foaming ale. On the occasions that we did get into the dancehalls we invariably had several drinks to build up our Dutch courage before we entered the dance floor ...even then we usually waited until some undanceable record was played by the DJ ...not for us the very danceable music of the Four Tops or indeed any Tamla Motown track ...No, our dance steps were driven by two things ...namely beer and loud thumping music so as soon as Black Sabbath or Deep Purple were played we were onto the dancefloor in an attempt to shake our collective heads from our shoulders. Was that dancing I don't think so, however at the time an hour or so attempting to damage one's own grey matter by rattling our brain's around seemed like the height of male dance skill. Smoke on the Water ...what a head banging song ...so much so that at throwing out time at the Strand Lyceum our happy group of cerebrally impaired youths made our way home via the beauty that is St James Park in London. If you lived in Pimlico, London then the easiest route home from the Strand is down the Strand itself across Trafalgar Square and into the Mall ...then across the park. St James Park in the warmth of a London summer is a walkers delight ...flowers, trees and ornamental bridges and a magnificent lake full of wild foul. That however is in the warmth of a Summer’s day ...late at night in a Tonic mohair suit and full of beer with the beginnings of a monster headache, the park is a totally different place and the desire to get home becomes all embracing. So instead of walking through the park and traversing the lake via the bridges we simply used to walk diagonally across the lake cutting the time to traverse the park in half (or so we thought). The lake is not deep, just up to below the knee in places, so onward we went eventually arriving home with soggy shoes and trouser bottoms. Mum and dad asleep meant that I could hang my trousers up on the basement line without detection. The dry-cleaning service in Lupus Street prepared my trousers for the next late night adventure. Not quite 'Strickly' I understand ...But 'Strickly' fun I think so. NB No ducks were injured in the enactment of my tale. When The Fun Stops. In a recent Focus I wrote a piece about the amount of adverts that were appearing on British TV in respect of "Funeral planning"... you know the ones "It's June Dad" is the one that really winds me up ...what has now got my goat are the adverts that attempt to encourage the viewer to part with their hard earned cash via gambling. Just as the football or indeed any sporting event is about to start on come the adverts ...Boost is the cry ...when the fun stops ...stop is the mantra ...six of the best and you can be a millionaire cries Jeff Stelling as Sky's football show gets under way. I wondered just how many bookmakers there were as the adverts are so numerous and differing. If you google British bookmakers you are presented with a very long list of bookies (73 in total) all of whom are after your cash. The range of actual bets that can be placed is staggering ...from the Acca to the number of corners per game ...will player X score a goal and be sent off etc etc. For my sins I have never engaged in the gambling game ...the thought of handing my money over to someone else with the odds stacked against me frightens the life out of me. So, for me I suppose the fun never really starts.

News about the AMATA fair in Jávea Port Did you know that there is a nice little craft fair to be found on the sea side boulevard in the harbour quarter of Jávea, every Sunday morning from 11am until 2pm. Regular visitors know that here people who are looking for original hand crafted items can meet the men and women who make them. The regional craft association AMATA, who organizes the fair, is very strict in admitting only “Artesanía de Autor®”, that is to say: the authors of EVERYTHING that is on sale, have to be present on the stalls. Now also opening on Saturday mornings Up until now, participants in the fair were mainly craft people from Jávea and the neighbouring villages. To offer those who live further away a better chance to sell and to guarantee the public more variety from one week to the next, it was decided to add an extra day to the fair. From now on you can find the dozen or so stalls also on Saturdays, with the same time table: from 11am until 2 or 3pm. Some artesans will be there the whole weekend, others will come only on Saturday or Sunday. Find the fair in Google Maps Now you have no excuse for not knowing where the market is, because it is now shown in Google Maps. The direct link is https://goo.gl/maps/ rx5uWDjHiYs or you can look for “Feria de Artesanía Jávea”. Here you can also check opening hours and look at photographs and news about the fair. Of course the weather is very important for the craft people, because they have to be sure that the rain or the wind doesn’t damage what they have made with so much care and love. So maybe one Saturday and/or Sunday, they can't risk it and that is why they have created a page on Facebook, specially for this fair. Up to date on Facebook At https://www.facebook.com/feriaartesaniajavea/ they will publish every week (normally on Thursday or Friday) a list of which crafts will be present on the next Saturday and/or Sunday. And when there is any doubt about the weather, you can see here, on the day itself, whether the market is on or not. To find this page on Facebook you can also look for “Jávea/Xàbia Feria de Artesanía Puerto”.

Barkinside Dogs are Winners! Fun and delightful chaos at the park in La Romana where 57 dogs entered the Barkinside Annual Dog Show recently. There were stalls selling goodies and food and of course the inevitable raffle and an auction.

Over 100 dog owners and dog lovers from all over the area came to show off their dogs, many of which had originally been adopted from Barkinside. Children from Kings College in Alicante came to look after and show several of the dogs that are

Danny Castillo not only judged the classes but also gave a demonstration of his wonderful assistance dog Voltio. This included Voltio opening drawers to fetch items for his owner and also opening the fridge to take out fruit and water. Danny had a difficult job with so many dogs, all of whom are the best in their owners' eyes. He made his decisions and chose winners in each of the categories. However the big winner of the day was the podenco Dakota, affectionately called Ducky. Not only did she win Prettiest Bitch, she then went on to win Best in Show. However more importantly than this she also found her forever home with Keeley Poole and Sharon Healey. There were tears all round! The day raised 1,015€ for Barkinside, the animal rescue and sanctuary based between La Romana and Novelda. If you would like to give a dog a home, or foster or sponsor an abandoned dog, please see www.Barkinside.es or if you feel you could host a fund raising event please call Jacquie on 697 122 883. Late Turner by Nicola Moorby

The Arts Society Marina Alta. 6 December at Salones Canor Teulada. Doors open 10am for registration. British artist J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851) is one of the greatest artists Britain has ever produced. He painted unforgettable watercolours and was revered for his masterly use of shifting light and dramatic cloudscapes. These are especially highly regarded. This presentation takes a fresh look at Turner’s late works. It sheds new light on his life and art, challenging the myths, assumptions and interpretations that have grown around his later work. It reveals a painter as distinguished by the broad scope of his knowledge and imagination as he was by his radical and exploratory techniques, processes and use of materials. Ms Nicola Moorby: A curator at Tate Britain, with extensive experience of lecturing to a wide variety of audiences. Nicola Moorby is a freelance art historian specialising in British art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She studied at the University of York and Birkbeck College, London, and formerly worked at Tate Britain as a curator and researcher. She has curated a number of exhibitions and published widely on J.M.W. Turner, including for the current on-line updated catalogue of the Turner Bequest, and is co-editor and author of How to Paint Like Turner (Tate Publishing 2010). In addition to Turner she has published on Walter Richard Sickert and is co-author of the Tate’s catalogue of works by the Camden Town Group. This presentation is sponsored by Blevins Franks, and as usual wine and soft drinks will be offered after the presentation to allow socialising with the speakers and the committee. Directions to the venue are on our website www.marinaaltaarts.com and for membership details membership@marinaaltaarts.com.

Warning! Contrary to popular belief, not all artificial grass is the same. Thinking of having an artificial grass lawn and doing it yourself? Trying to calculate the area, shoving it into the back of your car and having to do several trips? Then you have the problem of laying it. What direction do I lay it? Do I pin it? Glue it? How do I join it? The added pressure of not wanting to muck it up because it’s quite expensive, and despite what the salesman says, do I even have a good product? What is the main incentive for this? You probably think you can do it cheaper than employing a professional company. If I told you that you could have a professional team come in, show you a wide variety of quality artificial grass that looks amazing, calculate what you require, deliver, prepare and lay the grass as you imagined and for only a few Euros a metre squared more than you can do it yourself with a better quality grass, you may think I was pulling your leg. Well, I am not. It’s the sad truth that on too many occasions we are called to help people who have had either a builder, someone they know or themselves lay artificial grass and unfortunately it has all gone a bit wrong for lots of reasons. As with any trade, there are tricks to them and we know our trade. Any professional company makes a hard job look easy, and that is the case with Charlesworth Gardens and its sister company Artificial Grass Spain. We have laid countless artificial grass jobs throughout the Costa Blanca for over 12 years, we were there in the beginning and have seen and even helped develop artificial grass.

&

Because of our garden design and landscaping background we have created innovative solutions to lay our grass in ways many other companies still do not. continued on next page Female Focus November 2018

Page 35

FF - House & Home

The fact is that laying artificial grass is difficult and to do it properly can be very difficult, and it is only our experience and knowledge that helps us make it look easy, and this is why so many other contractors struggle to provide a product and finish the way it should be. All our Spanish made grass is made to ISO and EU regulations not just for the product, but for the work place that manufactures the grass as well. Even though the differences are subtle between our grass and other more economical grasses available, there is a difference and these small differences are the things that make our product strong and effective and therefore has a lot more resistance to use and will look good for years. We have had to give professional statements for customers against other large suppliers for sub-par product, and have had to rescue many customers, which costs them even more money. So, get it right the first time around and contact a professional company that cares as much about your garden and the way it looks as you do. Charlesworth Gardens, Artificial Grass Spain

Success in spite of the rain for Dénia U3A allotment open day Over 100 people turned out, brollies at the ready, for the U3A Dénia allotment open day. There were plenty of activities with a free raffle, bottle stall, book stall, plant sales, Petanque and a quiz. Plenty of lovely burgers, paella and salad to eat, along with drinks were available. The quiz was won by Duncan who knew that there are 2500 varieties of potato. Douglas won the lovely hamper of vegetables which was the raffle prize The thinking 100 who shared the eventful afternoon, brought umbrellas and anoraks. Our Spanish neighbour José Antonio, brought over three huge umbrellas, how very lovely and thoughtful was that. As we are now planting for the Christmas and early January veg, please wish us luck with our Brussels sprouts, we need a little frost! Next year we plan to hold the event early September when we can show off the size of our onions. A sincere thank you to all those in a wide circle of Dénia who braved the elements to share our food and drinks. We love showing off our allotments so please drop in when you can, Saturdays are usually good for tea and cake. We have a vacant allotment should you wish to join us. Lesley lives in an apartment truly appreciating the opportunity to garden, while John has a large garden but loves his veggies, therefore our small plots are useful and enjoyable, fitting a variety of personal pleasures and personalities. Thankyou to Dénia U3A for providing a flourishing platform of so many differing activities. Allotment group leader Pauline Wheeler - paulinewheeler@hotmail.com. Xàbia Book Circle Xàbia Book Circle is that comparatively rare thing, an organisation founded over 25 years ago with many active original members together with a vibrant intake of new faces. And these new faces bring new ideas and whole new areas of experience and interest. Xàbia Book Circle differs from the many book groups along the Costa Blanca, in that each month there is a different topic which involves books. And I believe that it is the enormous variety of topics which accounts for its continuing popularity. This Autumn season, for example, opened in September with Fabulous Fictional Females: favourite female characters in literature presented by Alma Dorndorf, one of our founding members, and friends.

In October Terry Gifford, a well-known author and lecturer at Bath With over 60 wonderful gift stalls inside the atmospheric ballroom, Spa University and who works locally with Alicante University and outside in the gardens, presented “Trees, the secret life of, and their use by writers” which there will be something on provoked a most animated discussion. offer for everyone. Jávea U3A events Jávea U3A Dining Out enjoyed a lovely evening with 64 diners agreeing that it was a highlysuccessful debut for new group leaders Mallory and Christine Glover. Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie are group leaders of three Jávea U3A groups: Spanish Culture & Cuisine, Travellers’ Tales and History. The success of all three groups is testament to their unflagging diligence and attention to detail. Most recently they organised a Spanish Culture & Cuisine day trip to Les Coves de Sant Josep, La Vall d’Uixo! The caves coach trip, enjoyed by 60 members, included a boat ride on Europe’s longest underground navigable river and a typical Spanish lunch in a cave restaurant. For details of these groups as well as a host of other U3A activities and how to join, visit the website www.u3ajavea.org. Female Focus November 2018

Underprivileged children from Calpe enjoyed summer camps thanks to Calpe Beacon During the month of August several children without families or economic resources have enjoyed the summer camps in Granada coordinated by the Tartaruga Association, thanks to the support of the non-profit organisation Calpe Beacon. The camps were attended by three children between 13 and 17 years old, two of them with cognitive disabilities, and they have integrated perfectly with the rest of the 90 children at the camp. According to Rosa Prados de Federico, Director of the Tartaruga summer camps, “The children have fitted into the group quite normally, showing initiative and interest in the activities proposed. No doubt spending time with other children of their own age has been very positive for them, and for us it will be a pleasure to welcome them again. " The children, from a care home in Calpe previously run by EMAĂšS that is currently looking after a total of 13, have enjoyed the camp and have asked to be included in the program in the future; during the summer of 2019 it will be repeated and offered to all the other children in the home who wish to participate. This is the second year when a program of this kind has been organised, as in 2017 a number of children visited the Granja Escuela in Agost in the province of Alicante. Calpe Beacon is based in Calpe (Alicante) and aims to help the underprivileged children of Calpe, facilitating access to different activities and courses, and encourage their professional development to increase their opportunities in the labour market. For more information and to find out how you can help with the summer 2019 campaign contact Rodney Payler on 600 096 788 and visit the Facebook page @calpebeacon. Female Focus November 2018

Jávea Bridge Club welcomes visitors from Barrow Bridge Club

Another successful Tusker meeting

A special tournament was arranged to celebrate a visit by members of Barrow Bridge Club from Cumbria, England during October. Making their third visit to Jávea, the group enjoyed a lots of bridge throughout the week of their stay. Jávea Bridge Club holds duplicate pairs sessions every week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with play starting at 3 pm. The club in Avenida de Paris, Jávea has an international membership with players of many nationalities. Visitors are always welcome. Bridge lessons are run regularly. For more information please contact Pat Ford on 96 647 2158 or email pat@javeabridgeclub.com.

The 26th Tusker Lunch was recently again held in the Nau Nau restaurant of the Jávea yachtclub with about 50 'Good Old Africa Hands' attending this time. Attendees have in the past been living all over Africa and now like to meet each year to share stories of their past, discuss some of the recent developments in that beautiful continent or just to make new friends. Brenda Bates initiated and organised the meetings -with a raffle for the SAIDA Children’s Charity in Kenya- for the last 16 years. Now she has found in Peter Allin and his wife Lorraine successful replacements for this position. Have you lived in Africa and want to meet some 'rafikis' to share your experiences? Then you are more than welcome at the next Tusker meeting in March 2019, possibly in La Nucia. If you want more information, just contact Peter at: peterallin1@gmail.com. Female Focus November 2018

HomeEspaña continues to expand HomeEspaña has been operating for over 16 years with more than 80 members of staff and 8 branches open across Valencia, Costa Blanca and Murcia regions. We celebrated the official opening of our new Calpe office on 5 October and would like to say thanks to all those who came and celebrated with us including property and legal professionals along with HomeEspaña employees. New business director of HomeEspaña Clare Johnston explained why HomeEspaña chose Calpe: “So why Calpe? Well, many of you may know us previously as a predominantly British run Real Estate Company but in fact in the North Costa Blanca we are becoming much more international. Our ratio of British to International clients is 60/40 at the moment and we know in this area there is a huge potential to increase the international market. Being in Calpe also allows us to dip our toes in the areas of Altea and Finestrat where there are lots of International buyers and New Build opportunities.” Followed by a few words from Managing Director of the North Costa Blanca Chris Solomon: “Clare has been instrumental in getting Calpe off the ground alongside Tine and Clive. What you need when you have what is effectively a start-up, is the desire, energy and passion to treat it as if it were your own business. That is exactly what the three of them have been doing and that is why we have had instant success. I couldn’t be happier with the progress made and we now have another string to our bow alongside our other two offices in NCB, Denia & Benidoleig. It has been our best ever year in this part of the Costa Blanca and now Calpe is up and running, I expect 2019 to be an absolute belter. On a personal front, this office has a very emotional attachment to me. Although I live in Valencia, Calpe is my 2nd home away from the UK and always will be.”

If you are looking to buy or sell a property in Calpe, contact one of our property experts now or contact us directly by email, phone or pop into the office – we would love to hear from you. Telephone: (+34) 96 682 1170. Email: info@homeespana.co.uk. Address: Calle Pintor Sorolla 10, 03710, Calpe, Spain. Female Focus November 2018
