Eye Care Advice for World Sight Day This month World Sight Day (WSD) is being celebrated on the 11th of October. World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and visual impairment. To support this important initiative Specsavers Opticas is offering this important information about impaired vision and how to protect your sight. Visual Impairment Facts There are approximately 285 million people worldwide who live with impaired vision and blindness. Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable through treatment and protective measures. The leading causes of avoidable blindness are: • Cataracts • Glaucoma • Age Related Macular Degeneration • Diabetic Retinopathy All of these conditions and many others can be easily identified with a complete eye test and early diagnosis is crucial to effective treatment and avoiding permanent vision loss. If necessary, the optometrist will refer you directly for further medical examination to an Ophthalmologist or doctor. How to Protect Your Sight • Get your eyes tested regularly – every year for children, over 70s and people with family history of eye complaints and every two years for those with no issues. • Eat a healthy diet – A diet full of the following foods has been shown to help reduce the occurrence of Age-related Macular Degeneration; chicken, saffron, dark green leafy vegetables, peppers, broccoli, pumpkin, yams, squash and sweet potatoes, apricots and citrus fruits, sardines and nuts. • Know the signs – Being aware of the symptoms of these common conditions will help you identify them quickly. • Take action - Don’t delay in seeking professional help if you do notice any changes, the quicker any condition is identified the easier it is to treat. To book an eye test, or find out more about eye health visit www.specsavers.es.

Amata craft fair continues in Jávea Port The long Summer craft fair organised by Amata in Jávea Port finished last month, but that doesn't mean that from now on you can't get any real craft work any more: several participants have decided that they want to continue with the weekly market held on Sunday mornings. So you can find them again every Sunday, at the Paseo Marítimo look for "Feria de Artesanía, Jávea" in Google Maps or go directly to https://goo.gl/maps/pHb3PsmSDjm. The stalls that you will find there really are special. Amata, the regional craft association that organises both the Summer and the Sunday fair, has chosen them carefully - nothing imported, nothing made in small factories, everything carefully and lovingly made by people who have chosen this way of life. It shows; these are not the "designer T-shirts" or "exclusive designs" you will see in the galleries, these are items that have been made because people prefer to make something special rather than just sit in an office or a factory. And every Sunday at 12 noon, one of them will run a workshop for children (free of charge). Every Sunday morning, starting at 11am and finishing at 2pm or even later, there will be people with soft and wooden toys, water colours, ceramics, some very original jewellery made from recycled beer tins or even a stall specialising in hand made dog collars! You won't know exactly what is there on any given Sunday morning, since every week there may be different stalls, but there are always the odd dozen stalls (as long as the weather is OK, because craft people can't risk that wind or rain damages their work) with interesting and unusual designs. For more information, ring Elvira on 639 979 678 (she speaks English). Or have a look at photographs on the Amata web site (it's in Spanish and English) on www.amata.es.

www.femalefocusonline.com The flags are flying as darling daughter made me a 'gwandma' again and they have signed for the house. As a bank repossession it was a bit hit and miss as there was no water, or boiler, or electric connected so until they were reconnected they were unsure as to whether any of the air con units, fridge, oven, toilets etc even worked. They have worked their little socks off, cleaning, clearing, painting, moving etc with help from family of course, and it is now looking more like home. Proud mummy (and daddy) moment considering they have a newborn baby waking them up during the night, a 3 year old who is unsettled by the whole experience, and their business to run. They are not quite out of ours yet, but we can see the light and at last we are getting our house back and they will soon be settled in theirs. Saying that, with their house only being only three streets away I expect they will be popping in regularly for dinner and granny time - I wouldn't want it any other way - honest! Another reason to celebrate this month - Female Focus is 25 years old and still going strong, in fact getting stronger each year! y

Private health insurance Affordable and accessible By Claire Johnstone – C J Insurance Costa Blanca
I last wrote about private health insurance in the Summer and I have to say, that choosing the right policy can be confusing. Everyone is different, it’s not a "1 size fits all" product. That's where I come in. I enjoy taking customers through the various options and listening to their needs, knowing that I've given the best advice I can and that the customer can feel confident that they're properly covered. When choosing a company cheapest is not always best, you want to be safe in the knowledge that when you need it you have full cover and no expense of your own to lay out. I chose DKV, not only as a representative but it’s the insurance I use for my family. DKV simply offer excellent medical cover. It’s not always the cheapest but it’s been invaluable to my clients over the years when treatment, sometimes long lasting, has been needed. They are extremely fair and have won awards for their clear language programme. I won’t list everything that’s covered here (it’s all on the advert!), but there are a few things I really do want to highlight. Firstly, DKV are very clear that many pre-existing conditions are in fact included in the cover, for both doctors and specialists! Secondly, there’s 20,000€ of emergency worldwide travel cover – no more worries about getting treatment should something happen to you outside of Spain, no limits on physiotherapy no limits on Prosthesis (except for cardio prosthesis which has a limit of 12,000€). Also covered are road traffic accidents, sports injuries and accidents at work. I’ve worked in the private health insurance industry providing peace of mind for hundreds of people for 15 years. There are a lot of options out there but for me and my family, only 1 choice! So, if you’re thinking about getting private health cover for your family, or maybe you need it as part of your Residencia application, I’d be delighted to advise and help you. Above all, I'll listen to you first and then discuss products after - the way it should be! I cover the whole of the North Costa Blanca and am happy to travel to you if you are unable to come into the office. Just call me to make an appointment and take that first step to healthcare peace of mind! CJ Insurance is located at the Villaset estate agents office on the Moraira to Calpe road, next door to David’s Fish and Chips, there are plenty of car parking spaces available. Must do checks for your finances and lifestyle this Autumn!

Your Pension: It Took a Lifetime to Earn It, Why Not Spend Just 1 Hour to Check All’s Well! Creating wealth is hard and building your retirement pot from company or private pensions has been tough for most people. Today the value of such pensions can be removed or rapidly diminished by events out of your control, eg companies not being able to meet their liabilities of the schemes they run - they are failing. We’ve seen the big companies such as (Littlewoods, Carillion, British Steel) whose demise sent shock waves around the economy. Those shock waves included thousands of people who suddenly have less – much less. It is likely more companies will follow, in many different sectors. The impact on the amount being paid to members is high, in that they will receive less pension for life than expected! Brexit discussions and deals are a daily item in newspapers and TV, so how will the fall out affect me as an Expat in Spain? Many issues need to be decided including health care, pensions, investments and currency exchange! Most clients ask me how will these impact on them and their family? Well, many ways is always my first answer but dependant on your current situation, so as it is “individual” we have a discussion to see what they have in place, what are their objectives, and plan to direct them through the maze of Brexit. So, what can you do? Well there are many possible avenues but as far as I am concerned only one real answer – and that is it’s best to find out. Debating with friend and family is good for you, but seeking professional advice from organisations whose daily business is to know what is correct, is the best way. After all, if you had serious health issues you would not expect your mate in the pub to diagnose it and treat it unless he / she is a Doctor. That’s where I come in, you can call on my 40 years’ knowledge in the financial world and I work as Area Manager for DeVere, by far one of the largest and most experienced wealth adviser operations throughout the world. Our job is simple and it starts by helping you find out your current and future issues. We don’t charge for this and if at the end of this free exercise you’re happy about your finances, then we’re happy to have helped. If you feel you need to do something, we can offer a range of options to suit you, depending on your current assets, objectives and attitude to risk. We present them and then it’s up to you if you wish to take our advice, after all it’s your money and lifestyle. In November, I’ll be making it easier to make that all important ‘first contact’. I’m setting up a series of presentations in hotels etc, where you can come along and simply listen. We just ask for an hour or so of your time and you can decide if you like what you hear. No obligation, no hard sell, no wild promises, just plain facts. So, read next month’s article for details of events which will be supported by other professionals such as lawyers and accountants. If you want to just find out and have a no-obligation conversation, call me and I’ll meet you - peace of mind will be the result. Again, it’ll just be an hour, but it might just be the most important hour you spend this Autumn! Call me, Steve Iball on 610 822 484 or email steve-iball@devere-spain.es.

3 Essential steps when buying property in Spain (Step 2: On the day of purchase) Welcome to the second article of the series of three articles involving three essential steps when buying property. Here are the steps: • Step 1: Pre-purchase • Step 2: On the day purchase • Step 3: Post purchase Ready? Read on. Step 2: The day of purchase Before completion you will receive three items: 1. A schedule of payments with a forecast of all the required amounts to cover each stage of payment 2. A final balance 3. A list of all the purchase costs The list from the previous point is to be sent to your own Spanish bank account once both parties have confirmed the completion date and their required funds have been made available. On the day of the signing your lawyers should prepare the cheques and bankers drafts required to proceed. The purchase process ends when the public deed of purchase is signed by both the buyer and the seller before the Public Notary. At the moment of signing, the seller grants the buyer the title deed of ownership and keys to the property in exchange for the rest of the agreed price, less any retention to be made. Throughout the signing process at the notary’s office, our clients are always accompanied by their lawyer, who prepares the deeds, oversees the documentation, checks that everything is in order and acts as an interpreter. If there are professional or personal reasons that prevent the clients from going to the notary’s office on the indicated date, their lawyer could attend on their behalf to sign the deed (Power of Attorney). Note: If the seller is a non-resident, the buyer has also the obligation to withhold 3% of the agreed price and pay it directly to the Tax Office on account of the potential Capital Gain Tax of the seller. At Sun Lawyers we guarantee to do this important step properly and efficiently. If a claim against the Capital Gains Tax can be made by the seller, then we can apply for a refund, provided that the seller is up-todate in their annual non-resident taxes over the last four years. Public Notaries in Spain are public officials and, consequently, they are independent from the parties. They publicly attest that the parties have agreed the transaction and that they have done so in keeping with the law. If you have any questions please give us a ring on 96 647 1898 or email admin@sun-lawyers.com. We’ll be happy to hear from you!

Make sure you’ve got a funeral plan If you’re thinking of relocating to Spain, Portugal or Cyprus, an Avalon funeral plan lets you make funeral arrangements in advance. Starting a new life abroad is exciting, but there’s plenty of practical considerations before you can don your sunglasses and put your feet up. While many expat checklists include things like health insurance and how to import a car, most of them forget to mention one very important thing: funeral arrangements. It’s probably the last thing on your mind when you’re planning your new dream lifestyle in the sun. But it’s something that you need to think about, sooner rather than later. Here are five reasons why buying a funeral plan should be on your to-do list when you move abroad. 1. Make it easier for your loved ones when the time comes Arranging a funeral for a loved one is a distressing experience at the best of times, but when you’re in a foreign country and may not be fluent in the language, it can become stressful and confusing. There are also cultural differences to consider. For example, in Spain most funerals take place within 48 hours. In Cyprus, you won’t be able to have a cremation, as there is no crematorium on the island. By buying an Avalon funeral plan in advance, your loved ones won’t have to shop around for a funeral director or worry about how the process works in your new country. All they’ll have to do is contact your nominated funeral director and they’ll take care of the arrangements specified in your plan. 2. Secure the cost of funeral director fees When you die abroad your assets may be frozen and become harder to access for your family to pay for the funeral. In addition, if your family have recently made the move to a sunnier life abroad, you might not have the cash savings you could once rely on. When you buy a funeral plan for Spain, Portugal or Cyprus, the funeral director fees are pre-paid in advance. This makes the process easier when the time comes, as well as easing some of the financial pressure for your loved ones. 3. Enact the plan abroad or in the UK If you split your time between Britain and your home in the sun, Avalon has you covered. Your pre-paid funeral plan can be enacted in the UK or in Spain, for example, so that you’ll still be covered wherever you are. It even covers the other countries we operate in, so if you swap Spain for Cyprus, or Portugal for Spain, your funeral plan will still be valid. It’s also perfect if you decide to return to the UK later in life. You won’t need to worry about buying a new funeral plan – simply let our friendly customer service team know that you’ve relocated and Avalon will assign you a new nominated funeral director in the UK. 4. Make the most of flexible payment plans in Pound Sterling or Euros When you buy an Avalon funeral plan for Spain, Portugal or Cyprus, you can choose a payment plan that suits you. You can pay upfront in one lump sum, or over several years. Your Avalon representative can tell you more about the options available. In addition, whereas with life insurance you can lose all your money if you miss a payment, you will not lose all of the money paid in with an Avalon funeral plan. If you need to adjust your payment plan, our friendly, professional advisors are there to help you. 5. Get support from a 24-hour bereavement line When the time comes, your loved ones can use our 24-hour bereavement line to find out what to do next. With British operators based in Europe, you won’t have to worry about language barriers. All the information you need about who to call and how to enact your funeral plan will be included in your documentation. Make sure you keep it in a safe place and let our advisors know where to find it when they need to. Find out more about Avalon’s range of European funeral plans by calling 671 935 072 or visit https://www.avalonfuneralplans.com/ contact-us-europe-venue.

We are excited to announce that the CBD Dispensary is moving to a new location! We have spent the last year in an office building about 400 metres away from our new location, but we are growing as more and more people discover the healing benefits of Cannabis Oil. So, we couldn't be more enthusiastic about the new space which will give everyone even more opportunity to join our growing band of loyal customers. The same personal service and private individual consultations are available either by appointment, to ensure complete and full attention from Mirjam, the registered nurse, or as a “walk in”. Although we have new premises at street level, our aspirations and goals remain the same; to bring natural healthy remedies to people who don’t want to take a lot of prescribed medication, that once prescribed has many unwanted side effects and can ultimately lead to other conditions requiring even more medication, with patients in a continuing battle with pain, discomfort and even depression. The good news is CBD is fast becoming a great alternative, alongside conventional medicine. It’s success in treating pain, inflammation, depression, and a host of other conditions makes it the fastest growing, well tolerated, natural remedy that is on everyone’s lips. We look forward to meeting old and new customers alike, at Calle Pare Pere 6, 03700 Denia (50m from Plaza Glorieta at the top end of Marques de Campo). Opening hours: Monday to Friday – 10am to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm. Saturday 10am to 2pm. Afternoon appointments available on request. Telephone Mirjam 692 320 121. If you don’t already know about CBD why not pop in and talk to us, we’ll be delighted to see you and explain how you can improve your health, lessen your pain and become the “New You”.

The Nefertiti Lift The neck and jawline area are a give-away of age yet are often neglected in favour of facial work. However, if the neck or jawline are saggy and loose, then this can give an unbalanced appearance and be a sure sign that treatment has been had elsewhere. The neck area can be particularly tricky to treat effectively as the skin is quite delicate and thin. However, this treatment can deliver remarkable results. As a specialist medical aesthetics doctor with many years of experience in antiageing medicine, Dr Carolyn Carbasse has created her own unique Neck and Jaw-Line Programme, combining a selection of carefully chosen techniques and treatments to tackle this difficult area to give a visibly younger and more defined neck and jawline. Dr Carbasse combines 3 treatments to achieve the best results, these include: BOTOX The Nefertiti Lift is designed to redefine the jaw and also soften neck lines for a rejuvenating effect that presents smoother skin without the need for surgery. Before After 90 Days The Nefertiti Lift technique consists of a series of botox injections carefully and precisely administered along the lower jaw line and into the neck muscles. Because the neck muscles are relaxed, there is an upward pull of the facial muscles on the neck which reduces saggy skin making the neck tighter and tauter. HIFU HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) otherwise known as Ultherapy, is a non-surgical medical skin tightening treatment that uses ultrasound to produce new collagen and so naturally increases the elasticity of the skin and, as a consequence, miraculously lifts and tightens then skin of the neck and jowl area. HIFU is the only non surgical treatment that specifically targets the deep foundational layer of tissue of the face and neck that would usually be addressed in surgery, but without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. RADIESSE For those deeper horizontal neck lines, Dr Carbasse uses Radiesse. This not only fills in the lines but also aids the tightening of the skin and collagen production, revealing a smoother younger looking neck. The combination of these 3 techniques treats every aspect of the aging neck. Using Botox to relax the muscles, HIFU to tighten the skin and Radiesse to fill in any remaining wrinkles incredible and guaranteed results are achieved. Is Cosmetic Surgery for You? Countless people have wondered what it would be like to have cosmetic surgery. It does not matter who you are or where you live, the chances are that at one point or other there has been something that you wish that you could change about your appearance. Of course some people are simply content to live with their appearance. But more and more of us are opting to have major or minor cosmetic surgery in order to alter what we deem our physical imperfections. It has long been known that appearance is linked to self-esteem. In the vast majority of cases changing your physical attributes can change your outlook on life. For women who have had children this can be especially true as the body might have changed in numerous ways. In short there is no avoiding the effects of a life well lived….time takes its toll on one’s appearance, whomever we are. Thankfully there are now numerous procedures that one might consider when getting plastic surgery. From the smaller procedures such as a tummy tuck, neck lift or breast reduction, through to a full body lift, the possibilities are there to create an amazing difference in one’s appearance, bringing increased self-esteem and helping you feel more attractive and confident. Studies of patients who have undergone cosmetic surgery found significant improvements in their quality of life within six months of surgery. They experienced positive changes in their social life, leisure activities and friendships. They also noticed improvements in depression, and generally patients experience an overall improvement of health and well-being. In Jávea we are lucky to have Dr Ignacio Poole who holds a Master's Degree in Aesthetic Surgery. Within the field of cosmetic surgery the use of newer technologies such as lasers, now makes procedures such as face and eye lifts much more accessible, mainstream and affordable. Of course, every 'body' is different and Dr Poole and his medical team assess every case individually. So if you have anything about your appearance that bothers you, however small, then there is an invitation waiting for you. Feel free to call into the clinic and find out about all the different services and procedures - and don't forget that your first consultative visit is completely free. WE WANT YOUR BRAS!
The Original Charity Shop are collecting new or ‘gently worn’ bras. Underwear is a luxury some people can’t afford. We’re collecting for Smalls for All – a UK based charity that sends unwanted bras to African villages to improve hygiene and prevent rape of young girls as wearing a bra in some villages is a sign of wealth, status and power. So, if you’re throwing out your old bras, please leave them at the charity shop instead. We have a regular collection for this charity. BRING THEM IN AND PUT THEM IN OUR BIN. Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Stags and hens in the doghouse
THE riot act is being read to stag and hen parties over their drunken behaviour by Spanish politicians who believe they lower the tone and drive away culture vultures. Despite the seemingly endless deep pockets of the visitors, city chiefs are getting sniffy with those who arrive just to get squiffy during the pre-marriage celebrations with gangs of pals. Everyone is familiar with the stag and hen parties that start early at a UK airport bar, can be a tad rowdy on the flight as they make their own entertainment and head straight for the beers on touching down; just to top up before a long night out. However, this is not a tale about the streets of Benidorm and a dig at Brits behaving badly; this is a story of how Andalusia has been left reaching for the aspirin and questioning how to cope with growing numbers of stags and hens. Rather charmingly described as ‘bachelor’ and ‘bachelorette’ parties, city halls blame high-speed rail links, cheap apartment rentals and a series of online entertainment packages for the rise and rise of the attraction of key cities for those who just want to have fun. Destinations favoured to celebrate a fond farewell to the single life are Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Malaga; the AVE high speed rail link means the parties are whisked in and away. Seville, the party city Back in May, your dedicated correspondent and a group of friends travelled on said railway from Valencia to Seville, helping fill up the carriages at an early hour were a flock of three hen parties and a single stag; they were in good spirits and other than bothering the cafeteria to start drinking while most were still sipping coffee, well-behaved. One party of hens clambered off at Cordoba, dressed in a bull-fighting theme, the bride-to-be in a rather fetching matador costume – it was only when queuing for a cab in Seville it was apparent just how many such groups were drawn to the historic city. And later exploring the medieval narrow streets, it became more and more apparent that Seville was a popular destination for the bachelors and bachelorettes. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves, taking selfies and having a good time. Perhaps the serious partying starts later when most people are tucked up in bed. Cordoba’s Councillor for Tourism Pedro Garcia has obviously had enough of the city being a magnet for stags and hens. “Cordoba has four world heritage sites and we aspire to high-end tourism that appreciates and enjoys our culture. These send-offs, which disturb people’s sleep at night, are not what we want.” Back in Seville, one specialist company hit out at competition undercutting market prices; alleging some allowed a party of 20 to bed down in an apartment – there are growing numbers of illegal (or other feet problems) rentals - that should sleep five. It was lowering the tone said a spokesman, who said there was a danger the city could become a “low cost destination”. (Maybe it was a simple game of sardines?) It was not a matter of filling coffers but damaging the image and cultural tourism model say the powers that be. According to a critic: “A euro earned from quality tourism is worth €100 from a bachelor bash.” Councils are looking to increase fines for loud anti-social behaviour; meanwhile it was very quiet on the return journey to Before After Before After Valencia except for the gentle sound of plink plink fizz!

Secrets of the beehive
PLANS to ease the housing crisis in Barcelona with Japaneseinspired ‘pods’ have been given the thumbs down by the authorities despite the space age design for modern life. Spain’s second city is in urgent need of affordable accommodation and company Haibu 4.0 aims to answer the call with a temporary solution with its capsules; the name is said to mean ‘beehive’ in Japanese. It has aimed its publicity at people who cannot afford soaring rents or those with a long commute and drew its inspiration from Japanese hotels where guests enjoy a bed, TV on the ceiling and clever storage space – kitchen and bathroom are shared. Haibu advertised its rooms – possibly via a podcast – at 200€ a month and has already received over 500 replies for the 15 available capsules, all housed in 100 square metres. It believes it is a real solution; each pod is 120cm wide, 200cm long and 120cm high and offers more privacy than a share hostel dormitory. Planners’ computers say ‘no’ – the rules say a housing space must have a minimum of 40 square metres. Perhaps a compromise will be reached, pod housing is taking off in many cities; some offering designs that can be linked together.

Create your winning smile with BluDent There’s nothing quite like the eternal joy of a winning smile. Tooth whitening has become one of the most frequently requested dental procedures by the public. However if your teeth are off colour, maybe going grey or even yellow, then you might consider getting your teeth whitened. We see this a lot at BluDent and totally understand that dental aesthetics are just as important as dental health. It all adds to our general well-being and self-confidence. However, it’s important to understand that this needs to be done professionally by properly trained clinicians. Teeth whitening is achieved by using hydrogen peroxide (the same peroxide as used to bleach hair). It’s the concentration that’s important. There are so called home kits, which contain 6% to 16% of H2O2 concentration. Even at this low-level concentration, this can be potentially dangerous. We see many cases where people have “tried at home” but failed to get results, or worse get some teeth white and others not! Moreover patients have come in complaining of discomfort and most common on all, getting painful sensitivity. Let’s be clear, Hydrogen Peroxide is an aggressive oxidizer and will corrode many materials, including human skin. It penetrates the structure of the minerals in your teeth, and every person reacts differently. Time is a factor here. One patient may need only 10 minutes while another needs almost 1 hour of application. This is probably the most important reason why we believe this should only be done at your dentist! In addition, we can use up to 37,5% concentration because we have the tools and training to do it properly! There’s one more important thing to know, the solution must be kept away from the soft tissue of the gum at all costs. We use a liquid barrier to protect the gums – and specifically the ‘gingiva’ between the teeth - before applying the treatment in order to protect this important area. So you can see that whilst teeth whitening is very much achievable, it is so important to have it done at your Dentist. At BluDent we use the very latest techniques in our state-of-the-art clinic so you can be sure that the utmost care and professionalism, along with top quality materials have been used to give you back your winning smile. We welcome you to make an appointment to come and discuss your needs. We have a special promotion of 'Blanc Technology Laser Whitening' for only 298€ until the end of 2018. Bludent is located in Cala de Finestrat, right on the beach. It’s easy to find with easy parking. Patients come from miles around simply because they know they don’t have to worry and no longer hate ‘going to the dentist’. To find out more, come and visit us in Edificio Front Mar (opposite SuperCor supermarket) or call 966 8000 60 for an appointment.

Fitness that’s Strictly fun FitSteps is a dance exercise class created by Strictly Come Dancing stars, Ian Waite and Natalie Lowe and the Olympic Swimmer Mark Foster. The fitness routines contain steps from Latin and Ballroom dances, using fast paced cardio dances such as the Jive and Quickstep, and slow toning dancing like the Tango and Waltz. Dancing uses every part of your body, similar to how swimming can. You use muscles you may not normally use, and because FitSteps class is so much fun, it may not even feel like a work out. Certain elements we use in the Paso Doble and Tango can greatly improve your posture. After a day at work leaning over a desk, it feels so good to dance and let yourself go, release some tension and have fun. There is no other class I have been to where you can be so graceful in dances such as the Waltz, or as sassy as with the Rumba. As Strictly Come Dancing is back on our screens, now is your chance to come and try out some ballroom or Latin routines, embrace the music and improve your knowledge of this type of dance. Believe me once the Strictly bug takes hold you will be addicted. FitSteps is for everyone. There is no age limit, as there are lower and higher options. FitSteps FAB (For All Bodies) is a low intensity beginner’s class, while FitSteps Extreme is for true fitness lovers who prefer a high impact, fast paced exercise. You can find FitSteps classes in Jávea, Moraira and Benitachell. Come along to dance, meet people, de-stress and enjoy the music, and you don’t need a partner. So as they say…… ‘Keep Dancing!” For class details call Marina on 615 472 127 or visit www.fitstepscostablanca.es.

Relaxing atmosphere. First class facilities. Personalised service. These are aspects that make Akinon Resort the ideal venue for any retreat, fitness camp or conference. The resort, based in La Nucia, close to Albir and Altea, has specialised in group travel and offer its guests a peaceful and tranquil setting with a wide range of modern facilities. The little oasis is hidden in a residential area in Urb. San Rafael and standing at the gates you would never think to find a 5,000m2 resort on a 23,000m2 property as you walk through.
“One of our advantages is that the resort is built horizontally with plenty of outdoor space for boot camps, morning yoga or other activities. Even when we are at full capacity our guests don’t notice due to the layout.” explains Resort Manager, Rebecca Bratlund, as we walk around. In addition to the beautiful outdoor areas Akinon Resort features 27 apartments for 86 guests, a fabulous spa department, a newly built teaching kitchen for cooking classes, conference rooms and yoga studio as well as a restaurant, Fusion 8. “For group leaders and organisers we offer the full package, a one-stop shop if you wish. And what we cannot offer onsite; we deliver through our wide local network of suppliers and partners. We take care of all their needs so that they can focus on their retreat or conference.” Rebecca continues. In their restaurant they offer groups the option of both half and full board, where they can create the menu based on the dietary needs of the group. Whether that is more restrictive diets like vegetarian, vegan, low carb or raw food or allergies and/or intolerance within a group. All the food is made from scratch, with no added preservatives and taste and presentation is the centre of each dish served. “Excellent customer service is crucial to our business model. Our goal is for our guests to know that we are here to take care of them and for them to leave with that WOW feeling. Flexibility, attentiveness and a positive attitude with a big smile are all crucial factors.” Rebecca says while illustrating the smiling one. There is no doubt that the staff at Akinon Resort have extensive experience in catering to groups and a visit would definitively be a memorable one. Role Reversal. Usually it is us who are helping you. This time we are asking for your help please. Regular Female Focus readers will know that Associacion Amigos Europeos de Javea deliver rapid emergency Ambulance Services throughout most of Costa Blanca North. (Although we are called the Associacion Amigos Europeos de Javea, this is only because we originated in Jávea and this is where our Head Office still is). We have a fleet of modern fully equipped ambulances, and armed with GPS, SatNav and pre-planned routes to your residence, in the event of a medical emergency we can reach you wherever you are based, even the inland areas, as soon as possible. Prompt medical help is often very important in a medical emergency, as is having the latest lifesaving equipment available. Our ambulances are akin to mobile Intensive Care Units, and our staff are fully trained. This is very different from the Spanish State ambulances some of which are minimally equipped, which often only have a driver, and are in such demand that you might have to wait a long time before one of their ambulances becomes free and can get to you. This is certainly not good in the event of a medical emergency. How we need your help... We are planning to add another new ambulance to our fleet. This is obviously good for all of our members, and also extremely good for the Community because we regularly provide ambulance cover at fiestas, festivals, races, concerts, and many other public events. However, every Ambulance with its equipment costs around 90,000€ and we simply cannot raise this amount for the new ambulance ourselves. And unfortunately we receive no central or local authority funding. So, we are asking you for your help if you are connected to any Charity Shop, the Rotary Club, the Lions, the Masons or any other Charity organisation. Please can you bring our appeal to the notice of your Treasurer or whomever is responsible for fundraising and ask if your organisation could raise funds to purchase a piece of vital lifesaving equipment for the new ambulance? We do not ask for money, but we would ask if your organisation could choose to fund a defibrillator, or a stretcher, or a portable oxygen system, or a blood pressure monitor, or some head/back/leg braces or... well, gosh, we could keep writing this list of items for ages and ages. There are so many things that will be needed to equip the new ambulance. We are hoping to have the new ambulance on the road by about February of next year. Could your organisation help us to equip it? If you, or your organisation may be able to help, please contact Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099. Laure speaks perfect English. Thank you so much! Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is just 50€ for a whole year for the whole family. To become a member please contact Laure Bolufer on the above number (10m to 1pm every weekday). She is our Registration Manager, and she will work with you to preplan your address and a map / route into our systems to ensure swift arrival to your residence, even if it is inland. Email: amigos_europeos@yahoo.es.

Easy Peasy Plum Jam Summer produces a glut of glorious vegetables and fruit and this year is no exception! My mum’s plum tree has supplied family, friends and neighbours with an abundance of fruit. When there is so much to go round, there is only one thing do; bottle summer into a jar to enjoy later when the days are dark dismal and summer is but a dim distant memory. This is one of the simplest recipes to make plum jam. It is lovely laced with cinnamon or a drop of port! Plums are high in pectin and should have no trouble setting as a jam. Sterilising is a crucial part of jam and preserve making as it keeps bacteria, yeasts and fungi at bay. If the jars are sterile and sealed correctly, un-opened the jam will keep for a year. Ingredients 2lb plums 4 tbsp water 2lb sugar 2 tbsp/ half a lemon juice 1 knob butter, approx 3-4 jam jars To sterilise jars Oven Method : Wash the jars in hot soapy jars. Place the wet jars upside down on a baking tray. Place in the oven and turn the heat to 160º-180ºC leave for about 20 minutes, remove just before filling. Microwave Method: Wash the jars in hot soapy jars; leave the jars a little wet. Microwave for 30 - 45 seconds depending on the size of the jar.
Recipe · Wash the plums, halve and remove the stones. · Into a large heavy bottomed pan/ preserving pan place the plums with the water. Cook gently for about 10 minutes or until the plums are soft. · Add the sugar and lemon juice – stir until the sugar has dissolved. · Bring to the boil and boil rapidly, constantly stir the mixture until thickened slightly and syrupy. To check if the setting point is reached, either use a sugar thermometer which is 105ºC degrees or place a small saucer in the freezer for 5 minutes. Take the pan off the heat, spoon a little of the hot jam onto the cold plate, return to the freezer for 2 minutes. Push finger through the jam on the plate - If it wrinkles and feels gel-like, it's ready. If it's not ready, turn the pan back on, simmer for five minutes and test again. · When setting point has been reached, skim off the froth and add the knob of butter which will disperse the remaining scum. Stir. · Ladle the hot jam into the sterilised jars, leaving a 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) gap at the top between the preserve and the lid. While everything is still hot, cover the jars with their lids or top with wax paper and cellophane secured with an elastic band.

Page 24 www.femalefocusonline.com agent in the environs of a populated British city"? What can be the rational for leaving a deadly nerve agent in a public place ...the evidence suggests that the effect of the nerve agent is not selective to a particular individual ...it (the agent) will kill or incapacitate all who come into contact with it. Why do the Russian authorities show so little regard for the ordinary people of Britain ...are our lives so worthless to them. As an individual I would never advocate poisoning of innocent people as a price to pay for the head of an enemy. Where is the civilisation in this way of thinking ...where is the common humanity ...I would guess that to Putin we are potential enemies and therefore not entitled to the norms of civilised behaviour.
A View From The South
Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. Vacillation and Inertia Summer is over ...holidays are over and the kids are back at school. In London the House of Commons is back after a holiday break that most ordinary people could not dream about. Politicians are back and the television channels are busy reporting the who, what and when of British political life. As an ardent student of politics, I do endeavour to watch the broadcasts from the House of Shame ...Oh the cut and thrust of political debate ...the razor like sharpness of the argument as our elected representatives fashion the society in which the people of Britain live. The only thing wrong with my opening paragraph is that after watching the first week or so of the machinations of the political class, absolutely nothing of substance is being debated and discussed in the chamber of the House of Shame. Having said that I do recognise that Brexit is ongoing ...but Brexit has been ongoing for a couple of years and up to date absolutely naff all has been agreed or even looks like it will be agreed. The Labour opposition are again in a mire about antisemitism, and in truth to call them an opposition is to stretch the meaning of the word to beyond its meaning. The government ...again another stretch of a word, do not govern at all ...they respond, and not very quickly, to events that surround them. Leadership at the top end of the political spectrum is non existent ...May and Corbyn must be the two most inept leaders of modern times. She, May is terrified of doing anything in case it backfires and comes back to bite her on the rump and He, Corbyn is just no use in a modern environment. Mired in historical socialism he would govern by consensus ...nothing wrong with government by consensus, the problem is that Corbyn would always be the arbiter of what that consensus is ..ie, If what the people want is not what I want then it will not be acted upon. Leadership by committee is not leadership it is vacillation ...leadership by inactivity leads to Inertia. I have said it before and will say it again ...Democracy in Britain is ascribed, it is not representative ...first past the post voting denies the people their democratic right, it does not enhance it. The Putin Factor Evidence has emerged that places the nerve agent attack in Salisbury at the front door of the Kremlin ...not on the door knocker but certainly on the front mat. Pictures of Russian agents walking through the byways of England along with documented proof of official Russian passports, (not forgeries) albeit with false names, point to the active involvement of the Russian military GRU spy agency. My question to the Russian authorities would be along the lines of "just how reckless can you be in placing a nerve Female Focus October 2018
A ripe old age Chatting to my mates around the "Table of wisdom" the conversation turned to the issue of how we felt as individuals now that we as a collective are all over the plateau of retirement. The focus became one of how our bodies were coping with our dotage. As a collective I doubt that there are enough working body bits between us to build one whole fit person ...that said however, the collective intellect still seems to be working and we do, on a regular basis, discuss the things that really matter in today’s world. I can assure you that not one contentious offside decision in Football gets past us ...the subject of food is a matter of the greatest concern and of course the jokes of both the Carry On team and Tommy Cooper are never far from the scene. Politics and economics get the occasional mention but as time is limited we tend to concentrate on the really important stuff. In conclusion I thought I would share with you Dear Reader a few notable quotes with regard to old age. 1. "Just remember, once you are over the hill you begin to pick up speed". 2. Bob Hope said "I don't feel old. I don't feel anything ‘til noon. That's when it's time for my nap". My favourite is from Stephen Fry who said " I don't need you to remind me of my age. I have a bladder to do that for me".

Never give out personal data Scam alert on the Costa Blanca: fraudulent callers clear accounts of the victims Heidi Eckert from PC-HIGHWAY computer shop in Jávea warns: many of my customers, up to 30 one week, have become victims of a phone scam. Alleged employees of the company Microsoft had phoned them and cleverly convinced them that there was a security problem with the computer or laptop. For example, if you are asked whether the PC or laptop is slow, 80% of respondents say "yes." The fraudsters then claim that they have to log into the computer to remove the problem virus. If you give them the login data, they can access your bank accounts and empty them. Heidi says many give away their personal data, because the fraudsters are well trained and clever, making you think you are being helped, but the truth is you will be robbed. In addition, they work with tricks: They ask the victim the first part of the security code, but then pretend that they did not understand the numbers and require the second part of the security code. ‘We always send warnings to our customers with our weekly newsletter "Wednesday Madness",’ says Heidi, ‘but people keep coming in having been victims. We have a lot of devices that were blocked due to these calls and the only option to be safe again is to completely re-install the PC or laptop. Then you have to change all security codes and passwords, sometimes the email address and often bank accounts and credit cards. The fraudsters even get the NIE number of the victim. Microsoft, or other companies - even banks - would never ask for a security code on the phone. Never give out personal data’. If you suspect that you have been victim of a fraud, put down the phone. In the case of one of her customers, fortunately the money could be retrieved, but that depends on the bank. If you are unsure, please call or visit the shop for advice. See below for details.

Liberty Seguros Insurance - The More You Take The Higher Your Refund
Liberty Seguros, the expats number 1 choice for insurance, is offering more discounts to both existing and new customers through a new Cashback promotion, from now until 20 December 2018. To continue their loyalty to existing customers, for every new car or home policy taken out, they will receive 60€ Cashback, so as much as 120€ for just two new policies. There is also no limit on the number of policies taken out, so if you own say two or three cars and more than one home, customers can get 60€ Cashback for every new policy contracted. Moreover, existing customers will benefit from an additional customers’ discount. New clients are not forgotten either. They will get 30€ Cashback on the first policy they take out for either car or home insurance and for all subsequent new policies 60€ each. This could mount up to 90€ Cashback for just two policies and even more if they have more cars or homes. Incredibly, there is no limit on Cashback whether you’re an existing or new customer, so it’s the perfect time to switch your insurances to Liberty Seguros and save money and put more towards your Christmas presents! The main condition that is applicable is that premiums are paid by direct debit and your refund is credited to that same bank account. For convenience, payments can be set up both in Spain or in your home country bank account, as long as it is within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) zone. Customers must be aware that these offers are not for renewals or replacements and apply to new comprehensive car and home.
In some cases, minimum premiums will apply to be eligible for the Cashback. Some other conditions may apply. Liberty Seguros continues its commitment to reward loyalty to their valued existing customers doing its utmost to offer the best service and price possible. Over 175,000 expat clients already chose Liberty as their insurance provider and this figure grows almost every day because of the excellent service and quality of cover clients get. MALCOLM'S MUSINGS Malcolm Smith has made his home in Spain and would like to share some of his experiences with us. I am sure that many of you can relate!
Reptiles, Rats and squatters
Looking back over the years, some recollections become a pleasure whilst others can be a pain in the backside. Having an active memory cuts both ways. I know now why the mind occasionally takes a day off and turns a blind eye to the stressful bits that leave a nasty taste in the mouth. Nobody in their right mind wants to glorify a broken leg, a fall or a dose of chicken pox but it still happens. We don’t like being landed in sticky situations either but they have to be tackled. When I retired in the late 1970s I had already explored some parts of Spain as well as most of the Ballearic islands. I’d seen a bit of Majorca and Minorca but I particularly liked Formentera where I spent several Summers in Es Pujols. It gave me the taste for Spain despite the environment being somewhat primitive. I rented a large villa only to discover it was more than lacking in amenities. Like there was no electricity, running water or even an indoor shower. We had to bathe beneath an upturned wine barrel on the rocks. There were a couple of bikes provided – with flat tyres, an aged Citroen CV which sounded like a farm tractor and a leaky canoe with a broken paddle. The island had no telephone links either. Mobile phones were a thing of the future. Staying there was a mixture of pathos and humour. We made the best of it and after a month we were living like squatters and enjoying it. Despite this I was not deterred from the idea of retiring to Spain. Eventually, after a lot of house hunting in Calpe, La Nucia and Villajoyosa I found a rundown rambling ‘casa’ in Altea La Olla. On the positive side the place had an orchard blessed with oranges, lemons, grapes, almonds and pears plus a sizable tiled pool. It seemed a decent deal so I bought it. What I did not know was that I had saddled myself with an overgrown, wild life inhabited plot of land, a habitat which included rats and rabbits, snakes, salamanders, iguanas, geckos and more. Being bitten by a sand snake was one of my early encounters. That I salved the snake bite with Mahou straight from the bottle was one hell of a fluke and pure luck! La Olla reptilian encounters were not unusual. I even wrote a poem about it. There were rats & mice and geckos too Twas just like living in a zoo At my house ………

Have You Heard of the CBBA? Costa Blanca Business Association
As an expat living here in Spain, it’s sometimes hard to find a business when looking for work at home, financial services, emergency repairs etc. Above all you need a business you can trust to do the work correctly and at the right price.
FF - Your summer magazine
Costa Blanca CBBA Business Association Businesses You Can Trust
The Costa Blanca Business Association (CBBA) put simply is a business networking and referrrals organisation. The CBBA currently comprises 22 members covering a wide range of goods and services, supplying businesses and people living here in the Costa Blanca. It was set up approximately 10 years ago and has become a trusted and established source of businesses you can turn to and trust. Our membership is diverse (see below). So what is it that makes them trustworthy?
Need A Job Doing? Choose a Business You Can Trust All our members have to prove they are operating legally here in Spain, registered, insured where appropriate, and paying taxes before they can join. Upon application to the Association they need to supply references to show that their standard of workmanship is up to scratch. When they become a member, they must abide by a strict set of rules concerning workmanship. As we say, our members must be able “to refer customers to each other with confidence”. By that we mean confidence that the customer will receive the best levels of service, and confidence that they won’t be harming their own business when referring. Although it’s rare, things do go wrong and if a customer is unhappy, they can ask the CBBA to intervene and help resolve the situation. This doesn’t happen often but when it has, in all of the cases, the situation has been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. In fact many of the members consider being in the CBBA a ‘secondary guarantee’ for their customers.
Need a job doing well? Call one of our members
Your 1-stop shop for goods and services on the Costa Blanca... Comprised of local businesses (100% legal & accountable) supplying a wide variety of trades and services, from building to web design, all our members work hard to achieve our aim of providing high quality goods and services at competitive prices.
visit www.cbba.es for member’s details also see full listing in Focus on Professional Services
In Business Yourself and Want to Grow? The CBBA is currently looking for new members to continue its success. The CBBA allows only 1 member per type of business and all members are encouraged to refer business to each other. The CBBA reckons it has shared up to 500,000€ per year of business between its members. Breakfast meetings are held every 2 weeks and are supported by various CBBA events. If you’re in a business category not currently covered, then you are encouraged to come along for a visit. You can see for yourself how it works and judge if it could be good for your business. If you like what you see, you can make an application to join! To find out more, visit www.cbba.es or email info@cbba.es. Or if you know one of our members, just ask them to bring you along to a meeting. We’re a friendly bunch who enjoy networking, socialising and growing our business through effective networking and referrals. Why not join us!

The Bedroom of your Dreams! October is Bedroom Makeover month at Lotus Interiors and all month we will be running special promotions on made to measure soft furnishings to help you turn your room into the bedroom of your dreams. Our personal sanctuary Our bedrooms are very special rooms, our own personal space and sanctuary where we can retreat from the world, relax and unwind, and restore our bodies with rest and sleep. They should be a calming space, free from clutter and distraction, decorated with colours that are restful and furnished with items that are comforting. The fundamentals of your bedroom décor may already be in place; your bed, bedside cabinets, chest of drawers and wardrobe space, so you may feel like you can have little impact. But you can completely change the look and feel of the room by changing or adding curtains and soft furnishings to introduce colour, texture and style. Natural rhythms One of the most important aspects of our bedrooms is the quality of sleep that we get. Much of this can be down to the mattress and bed that we are sleeping on, but another important factor is the light entering the room. Many of us simply drop the persiana to shut out the light but this can have an adverse effect by not allowing the morning sunlight to filter through and wake our body up naturally. Lined curtains are a far more natural way to block out the light, and for rooms that experience the early morning sun, we use black out lining or black out fabric to create a block against the light. A touch of luxury So curtains form an essential part of the bedrooms soft furnishings, but adding a bit of luxury is what creates the personal space that we all dream of; a sumptuous bedspread keeps the bed looking pristine at all times and can give a little extra warmth during the waning summer nights, or form another layer during the cold winter nights. A coordinated upholstered headboard gives that hotel chic look, along with a set of coordinating cushions in various colours and sizes; something to drive your partner mad but always the finishing touch to a well-dressed bed!
100€ DISCOUNT FOR FEMALE FOCUS READERS 100€ discount! So if you want to create the bedroom you’ve always dreamt of then October is the month to get the ball rolling. “The best shower we have ever had” Maggie and Norman retired to Spain 13 years ago and started off in a detached villa which they bought mid construction and finished off themselves. Now as their needs have changed they have recently moved to a modern apartment in the Old Town of Jávea. Maggie and Norman had used Showerman before at their first home to fit all their shower screens and contacted Alexandra again as they wanted to make changes to the bathroom in the new apartment. It was the usual layout, bidet opposite the lavatory and you had to squeeze between the two to get to the bath. This simply wasn’t suitable as Maggie had had a hip replaced some years ago and needed to be able to easily get in and out of the shower. This type of project is perfectly up the Showerman’s street. With over 24 years’ experience on the Costa Blanca, well known for their expertise in all things shower and bath screen related, for the past few years they have also been undertaking complete bathroom renovations. Alexandra explained the process to Maggie and Norman and accompanied them to the ceramic and bathroom suppliers to help choose the tiles and sanitary ware. Once the job was underway, Maggie and Norma were delighted with the way the work was being carried out. “Nothing was too much trouble” says Maggie, “The workmen were pleasant, hardworking and always arrived on time.” Norman was pleased that the job was done properly, all old tiles and pipework were removed and replaced, and even the electrics were completed changed. He remarked “It’s a totally new room, they were so conscientious, and the attention to detail was superb, we were really pleased with everyone that came into our home, especially as we were still living there while the work was being done.” Maggie was also delighted that Alexandra took a keen interest in the proceedings and was often there checking everything and when the job was completed, cleaned up thoroughly afterwards, including the hallway. “It was a good experience” remarked Maggie, “And it’s the best shower we have ever had. Lots of people have asked to come and see it, and we are very pleased to show it off to them.” So to get your own ‘show home’ quality bathroom that you can be proud of, contact Alexandra at the Showerman on 96 579 2285 or visit the new showroom in the Old Town of Jávea between 10am and 1pm Monday to Friday or visit www.showermanspain.com.

Preparing your garden for Autumn As we enter into October we often get high winds and sometimes rain and the two combined can make for big problems in the garden. The combination of the two elements with the rain softening the ground and then persistent strong winds can often dislodge and move even the oldest of trees, so we always prepare for the worst before it potentially hits. Storm protecting your garden hints and tips. The first and most important thing in the garden are your trees. I have seen too many beautiful and old trees lost because of the lack of some basic pruning that reduces the risk of them either becoming damaged or destroyed. Prune any excess growth from the tree that is new from this year, also cut out the middle of the tree to make sure there are no old branches and things that create greater wind resistance. If you take hold of a branch and move it you will see if it is passing through to the canopy, based on this assessment, if the branch doesn’t reach the canopy and isn’t a major structural element of the tree then this can be removed. Even if a branch does reach the canopy unless it is supporting a large amount of canopy growth again this can be removed. Basically, dead, dying, crossed, and pointless growth can be removed.

FF - House & Home
This is very important in trees like Ficus Nitida and Ficus Australis as these have large open canopies and if they have already been pruned correctly, they will be open from the inside and therefore be less at risk. The main thing you are trying to reduce is wind resistance, you need air to flow through the tree. Plants such as thinner taller palm trees such as Arecastrum may need staking, this goes as well for the taller plants such as last months plant of the month the Cupressus Sempervirens Stricta, but this may only need to be done in severe circumstances if the plant has been in the ground for more than three years. Even if you have large plants like bougainvillea or climbers clambering up pergolas etc you may wish to check their anchor points and wires, as again I have seen climbers take a bashing after bad weather and when these plants fall they can be very difficult to lift back up and put into place without cutting all of the foliage off, leaving them more susceptible to winter weather. This is another issue which we will talk about next month.
Plant of the month This month I am going for a tree, the humble Olive tree, Olea Europaea. It is probably one of the most loved and symbolic trees in Spain, I don’t think I know of a garden that doesn’t have an olive tree and why not. They are amazing specimens that are easy to grow and because of their foliage, the way in which you want to look after them can very much suit you. They are incredibly hardy and attractive trees. As we supply plants directly to our customers we offer and amazing range of olive trees at great prices, with selected growers from the region. We offer everything from baby olives starting out in life, to 1000 year old specimens that will knock your socks off. Again, because the olives can be clipped in topiary forms we have supplied them as small standards (lolly pops) for ornamental use, to vertical columns, square or round and stunning bonsai or natural shaped trees. We have even trained many a customer’s trees to take them from a standard natural shape to a custom cut bonsai style. So, all in all they are incredibly, versatile, hardy and attractive. If you want the best plants at great prices you can contact us directly with a list of what you want, or we can create a planting plan for you and your garden with a custom made list for your budget.

Tips and Tricks to Keep Your Hot & Cold Aircon Working Through the Cooler Months By K&M Aircon Well, Summer is officially over but it’s still warm and you still need to be able to rely on your air-conditioning to keep you cool. But as the cooler evenings of Winter arrive, relying on your unit for heating is just as important. At K&M we are always on hand should you need new aircon, or a repair. However, when it comes to repairs, we have seen so many cases where a little self-help can avoid an emergency call out and save money. Here are our 5 top tips… 1. Most people set the aircon to the highest or lowest thinking it will work quicker. It simply isn’t true and what’s more, you're doing damage to the system. The correct way is to set the temperature to where you want and let the system get there. If 24º is good for you, then set the system to 24º and be patient. 2. We live in Spain where water is scarce, so think about the waste water. Why not collect it and water the plants. In fact, the water is perfect for your iron because when it comes through the system, it is in fact distilled. 3. If you want to keep your air conditioner working at optimum, then clean the filters regularly. It's easy to do, takes 5 minutes and can make a world of difference. Check your manual, unlatch the cover, take out the filter and vacuum it! Simple, quick and easy! 4. Getting your system serviced by K&M once in a while is always good advice. We offer a maintenance service to take care of this. By doing regular maintenance, just once a year is enough, you’ll extend the working life of your system significantly. The Autumn is a perfect time for this as it’s the time of year you least likely to be using the system. 5. If you think your old system is getting past it, think again! Along with a maintenance call, Aircon K&M can re-gas your system and have it performing like it was installed yesterday. We often see units which are 10 or 15 years old and a simple re-gas has kept the customer cool, and saved the bank account. If at the end of the day you want a new system, we offer all leading makes and models, at competitive prices with fast installation. We’re based in Calpe and serve the whole Costa Blanca. You can contact us by calling 96 587 4838.

World Clean Up Day The Biggest Ever Single Day Of Volunteer Based Waste Collection Efforts On Saturday 15th September, 2018 150 countries took part and an estimated 13 million people participated to stand up against global trash problem.
Antiques Fair
The Autumn Antiques Fair is as usual in the lovely Salon By Helen Davis ( Spread some Sunshine ) Canor, Calle Assagador, Teulada, on the 12th of October In Jávea the SPREAD SOME SUNSHINE WORLD CLEAN UP from 9am until 3pm. DAY, if much smaller than planned due to the weather, went ahead. Huge heartfelt thanks to those who dodged the showers and waited for the skies to clear - Team Telitec, parents, teachers and pupils from XIC, Paul and Team from Terapeutico, Michaela from Golf Hot Spots, Siobhan Rollinson and the lovely Flora, Sadie and Marie from LES, Denise Fallon and anyone else who joined in at the last minute! We had a fantastic and fruitful few hours .... fund raising figures will obviously be lower than expected and not yet finalised. ALL monies to go to Spread some Sunshine project supporting a charity in Sri Lanka providing food, clothes, shoes, tuition costs, plus repairs and renovation to several children’s care homes near Hikkaduwa. These children have NOTHING and this money we send to Sri Lanka will buy at least one months food and hopefully pay towards one months teaching cost for craft classes. As I am often told .....Charity should begin at home, but for these children without parents or possessions, it IS THEIR home! Do you feel frustrated by the inconsiderates who selfishly drop litter everywhere, ruining our beautiful planet, harming animals and marine life and want to do something about it? Then check out Plastic Patrol and Xabia Neta Entre Tots on Facebook..... who regularly organise local clean ups in and around Jávea.
We are supporting AKIRA who will be selling items generously donated by their patrons. Entry and parking are free and bar food and drinks are available all day. Any queries contact Paul or Sue on 626 795 587 or 96 573 2741.

Reviled to Revered:
Monet in Paris and London with Lizzie Derbyshire The first meeting of the Autumn season of the Arts Society Marina Alta will be held at Salones Canor Teulada on the 4th October at 11am. The venue (directions on our website www.marinaaltaarts.com) will open at 10am for registration and coffee will be available to members and guests. The lecturer for our first presentation of the Autumn season will be Ms. Lizzie Derbyshire, she is a regular contributor to the Arts Society and is a past chairperson and now President of the Hambleton Arts Society. Lizzie studied for her Master of Arts at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London and has also lived in Paris for many years, so has first hand knowledge of the places and environment depicted by her subject Monet. The title of the lecture is ‘Reviled to Revered: Monet in Paris & London’ and we expect this presentation to be most illuminating as Lizzie has a particular interest in placing works of art in their wider social and economic context. We will be getting down to the real driver behind the impressionists’ brush and imagination. As has become standard fare, wine and soft drinks will be available to members and guests to allow socialising with the Committee and Speaker after the lecture. For further details of the Society and programme for 2018 see our website www.marinaaltaarts.com or for membership membership@marinaaltaarts.com.

oroscope LIBRA The tense atmosphere at home is relaxing more and you are all finding solutions to what really were petty niggles which got out of hand. Finding you have a bit extra money doesn't mean you have to go out and blow it all, save some for a rainy day. SCORPIO At last you are catching up with all the things you have been adding to your to do list. This feeling of achievement after the frustration is great. Keep up the momentum in all aspects and you may even find it starts to rub off on others. SAGITTARIUS Work hard and reap the benefits - sounds obvious but you have to make sure those around you realise that this is the only way you all win. Be clear about what you want to achieve and what you expect from them. CAPRICORN At last all the ups and downs seem to be coming to an end and progress is being made. Hopefully this will give you the opportunity to relax and have a bit of 'you' time. AQUARIUS The air needed clearing and in some cases still does. Do it, resolve these issues once and for all. It won't be easy, but once done things will be so much better for everyone. PISCES By doing some simple changes you could save a fortune on your monthly outgoings. Moraira-Teulada U3A presents cheque to the ‘Make a Smile’ Children’s charity. At the General Meeting held on Monday 3 September the members of Moraira-Teulada U3A were pleased to welcome, for their second visit, Tony Grande and his wife Lucy. Tony, a representative for the ‘Make a Smile’ charity (this year’s nominated charity of the Moraira-Teulada U3A) had visited earlier in the year and everyone was impressed with the work and dedication of the charity to help disadvantaged children.
COMMUNIT Y NEWS & EVENTS
Unfortunately, on the previous visit, Tony was unable to use the projector due to its malfunction, but now with the new projector the full programme was able to be presented. Tony spoke about the wonderful work done by those supporting ‘Make a Smile’ in helping to provide a balanced diet and daily needs for more than 50 children in the care homes, as well as a home with 24 mentally handicapped children. Tony emphasised that ‘Make A Smile’ is determined at all times to make a positive impact on society. At the end of the talk, Tony was presented with a cheque for 700€ from the Moraira-Teulada U3A President David Haxon. This was the proceeds from a quiz held in aid of ‘Make A Smile’ in June.
Jaguars go Portside Written by Sandra Brook.
Members from the South of the Costa Blanca once more took a leisurely drive North, meeting up with members there before arriving together at the Club Náutico Altea for their August meeting of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club (JEC-Costa Blanca).
Once all of the members safely lined up their big cats, they started causing quite a stir as nautical boat people, along with interested passers by were all drawn towards them. This meeting turned out to have two birthdays on that day, so both were sang their own version of happy birthday. One of these ladies deserves a special mention as Molly Cook, along with her partner Brian Paterson, were both given a gift each as a thank you for all their hard work they have put in for the club. These were presented by the JEC club president Mr Michael Brook on behalf of all of the club members. After enjoying our first visit to the Club Náutico Altea it will certainly be repeated, as a good time was enjoyed and an enjoyable meal was served by pleasant staff, who went out of their way to make it a purr-fect day for the Big Cats and their owners.

Amata Craft Fairs in Onil and Jávea In October the regional craft association Amata will be holding two Arts and Crafts markets in the province of Alicante. The first one in Onil, on 5, 6 and 7 October, and on the next weekend, 12, 13 and 14 October, in Jávea. The fair in Onil will be combined with so many other activities that a visit to this picturesque mountain village during that particular weekend is sure to be of interest. Besides an Arts and Crafts Fair, local products will be on sale, there will be a children's Fun Fair, workshops and a pleasant walk through the old town - something for everybody. The Onil Arts and Crafts Fair will be set up in the Plaza Mayor, around the Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas, an impressive 16th century fortress palace right in the heart of the old town. Besides 25 stalls with all sorts of goods made by the stallholders, there will also be workshops for children. All is part of "Onil es Mostra", a project full of activities to promote the village: inside the palace there will be two interesting exhibitions and local stalls set up in the court yard. In the main street they hold a Carrera Popular (general running competition) and on Saturday evening there will be a concert in the square in front of the palace. And on a nearby square there will be lots of games and entertainment for children. The following weekend Amata will move to the Northern part of the province to set up in the Port of Jávea, on 12, 13 and 14 October. The fair is held on the seaside boulevard near the Port (look for Feria de Artesanía Jávea in Google Maps or https://goo.gl/maps/rx5uWDjHiYs). Some twenty craftsmen and women set up to show what they have made - ceramics and decorated stones (mandalas), traditional wooden toys, made-tomeasure leather dog collars, and jewellery using macramé, aluminium from recycled soft drink cans, silver and copper. On the same weekend the bars and restaurants of Jávea Port hold a "Mar de Tapas" weekend. You buy a set of tickets at the stall next to the Craft Fair, and then spend a convivial hour or more sampling various tapas (each one made with sea food) taken with a drink or two here and there. In both fairs, everything is made by the people on the stalls, people who have decided to spend their lives making objects that please themselves and which they hope will please others. They use natural or recycled materials, a few hand tools or perhaps a simple machine, and they often can make something to suit you - a special colour, a name or a particular size. Perhaps a little early for your Christmas shopping but on the other hand, where are you going to find such nice and original presents for all your loved ones? Opening times in Onil on Friday 5 October from 6pm until late at night; on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October the fair opens from 11am until 2pm and from 5pm until late again. In Jávea, as 12 October is a bank holiday, the fair opens all three days from 11am until 11pm, although the Mar de Tapas festival doesn't start until Friday afternoon and lasts until Sunday lunchtime. More information about both fairs (also in English) on 639 979 678.

COMMUNIT Y NEWS & EVENTS
Question: What do you get when 50 Jávea U3A members turn up for a challenge at the local golf club? Answer: A highly enjoyable evening on the return of the U3A’s popular Quiz Night. Back after the Summer break, the quiz once again proved a real tester thanks to the questions compiled and presented by group leader David Grove, ably supported by his wife and co-conspirator Hilary. After a close contest, the competition was won by the Newbies team, made up of Dave O’Connor, Diane Poirier, Lorely and Glyn Griffiths, Angela Black and Geoff Kane. They walked away with a prize haul of bottles of wine. The losers didn’t go away empty-handed either. The lowest-scoring team (whose names shall remain anonymous to avoid any embarrassment!) received helpings of Toblerone chocolate bars. The next U3A quiz will be a Christmas cracker on 6 December when all the questions will be related to the festive period. Sister Aircrew Associations Celebrate The Battle Of Britain Together The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca was joined by its sister Aircrew Association from the island of Cyprus to celebrate the Battle of Britain at a formal lunch held on the 19 September at the Cumbre Restaurant, Benitachell. Seven members of the Cyprus Association had travelled from Cyprus to be guests of the Costa Blanca Association and spend a week on the Costa Blanca. This was a unique occasion for both Associations and there is an aspiration from both Associations to repeat the combined celebration, possibly in a location mutually acceptable to both. Moraira-Teulada U3A Members celebrate 10th Anniversary in style – with a grand Hog Roast! More than 200 members of our Moraira-Teulada U3A attended the Great Hog Roast on Tuesday 18 September at the Font Santa park in Moraira which was organised to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. Many U3A members were on site early in the morning under the direction of the organisers, Peter and Pauline Griffiths, helping to set up the numerous tables and chairs necessary to accommodate everyone as well as the large pergola erected to protect the very busy musicians from the sun. A wonderful sunny September afternoon was spent drinking the complimentary bottles of Cava and eating a very tasty selection of roast hog served with stuffing and the most delicious crackling. Throughout the afternoon, members had a great time listening and dancing to two wonderful entertainment groups, Take 2 with Marnie and Frank and their selection of ‘easy listening’ songs followed by the very energetic Moonshine with Cloe and Vic who entertained with some great rock & roll tunes. At the end of the day a very happy and tired crowd of Moraira U3A members assisted the organisers by clearing away all the tables etc. and then departed – no doubt many to have an early evening nap!
