Ask the Optician – Children’s Eye Health Mike Stone, Store Director, Specsavers Opticas Calpe
As everyone is back to school this month, I wanted to focus on the important issue of children’s eye health. If visual problems aren’t identified early it can affect the child’s development, how well they do at school and how they experience the world around them, so it’s an important issue. Q. When should I start taking my child to the opticians? A. We believe that children should have their first eye examination at around three years old but if you are concerned, don’t wait until then. The earlier any vision problems are discovered, the better the chance of correcting them. Q. How can the optometrist examine my toddler’s eyes when they can’t read? A. Opticians can assess which kind of lenses, if any, are needed without your child having to read by: • Measuring the focusing ability by looking into each eye using an instrument called a retinoscope • Using shapes, picture books and other materials to help children indicate what they can see and how clearly • Checking whether the eyes work properly together • Using special charts for young children who don’t know their alphabet • Checking the health of the eyes using an instrument called an ophthalmoscope Q. Are there any signs I can look for that indicate there is a problem with my child’s eyesight? A. There are a few signs which could indicate a vision problem in children including: sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes repeatedly, complaining of headaches, being clumsy or squinting. Q. What is the relation between eye sight and performing well at school? A. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books, so it’s vital to identify problems early. Specsavers Opticas is currently offering 2 for 1 on kids’ glasses from 59€. To make an appointment or find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es.

Although tiring, we all thoroughly enjoyed their stay and can't wait for them to come over again. They really were great company and the days flew by far too quickly. It makes me appreciate more that our daughter and family are here in Spain and not in a different country. I would hate not to see them often although..... I would prefer they lived in the next town rather than the same urbanisation. I am sure she is teaching the little one to ride her bike so she can send her round to ours on a regular basis.... PS. Note to self - don't leave keys with darling daughter when taking visitors back to the airport as she moves herself and family back in and sends me a picture of my lounge having been taken over by a 3 year old..... when will I learn.

The Coffee’s On Me! You’re living in Spain and ‘living the dream’ - I couldn’t be happier for you. The thing is, it could all come crashing down if your finances take a hit. I’ve seen it many times, and more often than not it could have been avoided!
by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain
Many people think that Independent Financial Advisers are about Pension Advice, but that’s just one aspect of what I cover in a FREE Financial Wealth Check! I proudly work for deVere, one of the largest financial institutions in Europe specialising in the expat market. During the wealth check, I cover all aspects of personal finance including tax in the UK, tax in Spain, inheritance tax, investments, income expectations and yes, pension planning! You may think (like many) that this doesn’t apply to you because you believe you’re not ‘tax resident’ in Spain. Sadly, most people get this wrong and only find out when the postman delivers a ‘nasty surprise’ from the Spanish Tax man. If you meet any of the following criteria, you are for sure on the Spanish taxman’s radar… 1. Living more than 183 days a year in Spain in the year Jan to Dec 2. Conducting a business in Spain (even if the business is UK registered) 3. Having children in Spain under 18 living with you It is important to know your status as there are benefits you may be missing out on. It’ll cost you nothing to meet with me and highlight areas of opportunity and concern. There’s no obligation to take out any services or solutions deVere provide. I believe that once impartially informed, you have the basis for making decisions and changes for your finances. If I can help further, I’d be delighted, but will be equally delighted if you go away with some good information to consider adds value to life in Spain. Nearly everyone finds out new information, additional information or facts that will either make money or save money (taxes). So, my question is, just like getting a health check before it’s too late, why wouldn’t you give up an hour for a FREE wealth check? It’s never too late to find out and it won’t cost you a penny. Call me, Steve Iball on 610 822 484 (or email steve.iball@devere-spain.es) and let’s answer those nagging questions “does this affect me?” The coffee is on me! This is my 40th year of giving advice on Financial services so I have seen most situations!

3 Essential steps when buying property in Spain (Step 1: Pre-purchase) Welcome to the first article of the series of three articles involving three essential steps when buying property. Here are the steps:
• Step 1: Pre-purchase – This is what we will cover today. • Step 2: On the day of the signing • Step 3: Post purchase Step 1: Pre-purchase Whether the property you would like to buy is off-plan, new build or resale, you should make sure that it is not in a secluded location. Instead, ask to yourself questions like: • How far is the hospital or the health centre? • Do I have to drive much to go to the supermarket? • Are there any leisure centres around? • Will I live in a safe area?
On the other hand, for off-plan property, your lawyers should:
• Go through a background check of the developer or promoter • Make sure the project is fully registered with the town hall • Check there is an up-to-date building licence • Review all the contracts to confirm everything is correct, including the bank guarantee
Estate agent
Have you got any questions? Please give us a ring at 96 647 1898 or send us an email at admin@sun-lawyers.com. We’ll be glad to hear from you!
You should look for a reputable estate agent to clarify the previous questions, as well as to find you the perfect home.
Next month we will cover Step 2: On the day of the signing – stay tuned.

After 15 years of working on the Costa Blanca M3BT have a long list of satisfied clients who they have helped realise their dream home in Spain. Don’t just take their word for it… Here’s what their satisfied clients have to say… “Our house renovation in Villalonga” by M3BT Clients - Richard Jackaman and Vicki Bladen Many people are dubious about buying a house to renovate in Spain, we too sat well within that category until we met Tony Morris of M3BT. Our house was uninhabitable and so needed a complete renovation including waterproofing, electrics, new kitchen, bathrooms, new terracing and the list goes on. To see it now you would not believe it. Tony was in essence our project manager but he was so much more than that; he dealt with all the licences, the local town hall, the planning, the budget, even the neighbours, so that all progressed smoothly. He was aware of our budget and listened to our ideas although he usually came up with better ones; when we needed to overspend on unforeseen issues; of which there will always be some when completing a major renovation, he came up with ideas and designs to reign in the budget in other areas; never compromising on the quality and overall look. Nicola was our design guru and without her I’m certain our house would not have looked so good. She has been doing this for some years and her expertise and foresight on the end product really shone through. She tirelessly drove us around looking for kitchens, tiles, bathrooms etc, giving us options within our price range. She emailed ideas and was always available for advice. Throughout the whole project Tony kept us up to date with progress and budget, sending photos and asking our opinion on things that cropped up. This communication is imperative if you are not there, and never once did we have any concerns about what was happening or choices that were being made. The quality of the finish exceeded our expectations and credit must go to the craftsmen that are part of the team. Their aftercare has also been second to none; it is obvious that they take pride in what they do and they do it well. The home we have now is something we could only have dreamed of, but with Tony, Nicola, Phil, Jose and all the craftsmen that make up their team, the dream is now reality. Would we recommend them .....well they will be coming back to do the next phase of our renovation so a whole hearted YES! Contact Nicola and Tony of M3BT on 96 281 5272 or visit www.m3bt.com.

Our house, our refuge, our castle ... In short, our home Not everyone knows that taking out a home policy is not mandatory except when the house is mortgaged. That is the only situation that requires a person to have a policy that protects their home in Spain. However, it is worth saying that, although it is not mandatory, it is advisable and necessary to be prepared for any eventuality. Our home is our most precious asset and if we want to avoid surprises and unforeseen events, it is important to get an insurance that gives us the peace of mind knowing that whatever happens in our home there will be someone who is responsible for solving it. The first thing you should know is that you do not have to contract your home insurance with the entity that is granting you the mortgage but you can compare prices in the market and hire the product that provides the coverage that best suits your needs.
Until a couple of years ago, banking entities could condition their mortgage lending with an "obligation" to contract some linked products, such as the home insurance. But now, with the approval by the European Parliament of the Mortgage Credit Directive, banks are prohibited by law from linking a mortgage to the purchase of insurance. Your insurance company might include a clause in your policy registering your lending bank as mortgage beneficiary, to cope with the request of the bank. Then, the key question is, what is the best insurance for my house? In this article we give you the keys so that you can make the best decision when taking out your home policy insurance. The value of the Building There are two criteria to assess a home insurance policy: the building and contents. The ‘Building’ section of your policy refers to the costs of rebuilding your home, not to the market value or the cadastral value. However, it is of key importance to declare the whole size of the property, according to the cadastral property details.
The value of the Contents The ‘Contents’ section of your policy refers to economic valuation of all the household goods: furniture, including kitchen furniture, electronic devices, musical instruments, jewellery or other objects of special value. Check that the imputed valued of the content can cover the value of all those things. Although in many cases the sentimental value is higher than the economic one, the best advice is to add all the important items in the content to secure them. Special features Besides worrying about the Building and the Contents, there are other very interesting and useful covers to consider that not all insurance companies offer. Liberty Seguros is offering among others the following great covers: • Up to 1000€ compensation for the additional water consumption costs due to water leakage when you take out their premium home policy. • An unrivalled DIY Service, to avoid the hassle of assembling packed furniture, fitting curtain poles, hanging pictures, etc. • Damage to your garden furniture, even it has been damaged by adverse weather conditions. • Your goods will be insured on a "value as new basis". • Legal defence, claims for damages and IT assistance service. • Home assistance, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with just a simple and FREE telephone call on 900 243 657, in English or German. • A return ticket to your home in Spain if you are abroad in your home country should an unforeseen claim happen. Apart from all these advantages, Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents that are dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly and expert advice, because every home is different and such an important decision deserves a face to face chat with a professional insurance advisor, in your own language, to discuss the most suitable cover for your home in the sun.
With insurance, not only for home, but also car, life, pet, business, commercial, leisure, public liability and personal injury, Liberty Seguros is considered by far, the expat’s number one choice in Spain today. Making a difference to someone’s life by Good Care Group carer Marie Woodward I started working as a live-in carer just over 4 years ago at the age of 49 after my personal circumstances changed. A friend of mine suggested it. I had never done any care work before other than bringing up my daughter and wasn’t sure if I was the type of person they would be looking for. My background was administration and I had also done bar/ restaurant work. In the beginning I worked for a different company for a year, but I was not happy there. I contacted The Good Care Group after seeing an advert in the local media and a friend of mine had just moved to them and said how good they were. I arranged to meet up with Anne. We got on so well from the moment we met and chatted for ages over coffee and cake! The training course was very comprehensive and although I had been doing the job for a year before, I learnt so much. They make the training interesting and are very knowledgeable which gives you confidence in the company from the start. It wasn’t long after I finished training that I was given my first placement. I was given a copy of the care plan and was fully informed of the client’s needs and wishes. I was fully supported as I settled into the placement. The company try to place their carers with like minded people and if you have a preferred area then they will also try to accommodate that. I go back to the same client every time and work for 2 weeks then have 2 weeks off. The same carer goes for 2 weeks whilst I’m at home and this is great for the client as she has continuity. To feel like you are making a difference to someone’s life is the best feeling in the world. The most normal things we do ourselves every day without thinking about it, like getting dressed, can be a huge achievement for someone else. To know that you have been instrumental in enabling them to achieve that is amazing. It is the most challenging and rewarding job I have ever done. For more information about becoming a carer with The Good Care Group, contact Anne Greatrex on 96 571 3746 or 628 343 240 or email anne.greatrex@thegoodcaregroup.com.

Hair Colour – Art and Science Changing hair colour is never as simple as pointing to a colour on the chart or reaching for a box in the supermarket. The perfect hair colour will not only complement your skin tone and make your best facial features shine; it can also help you look years younger. There are many considerations when creating great hair colour. A professional colourist combines science and art to achieve fabulous colour. The type of colour product selected for you will depend on the commitment and result you require: You may have heard terms like temporary, rinse, semi, demi, permanent, so we recommend you consider the commitment to colour you require and the result you are looking for; darker/ lighter, a temporary change, colour that gradually fades or to cover some grey. Colours are often referred to in numbers e.g. 9/1, this is to categorise the colour depth and tone and KRU can match any colour so don’t worry if you don’t know the name of your colour. There is an infinite combination of different tones that can be created to compliment or counteract natural tones in your hair and flatter your skin tone.

As a general rule those with warmer undertones in their skin will look great with a warmer hair colour, like golden blondes or honey browns. Equally, those with cooler undertones in their skin will look better with cooler hair colours, like ash blonde, black or auburn brown. Eye colour is often a good indicator of tones that may suit you. Many clients often wish to stick to colours that they relate to their youth, however your natural hair colour and skin tone today is likely to be different, therefore reverting to the colour of your younger years often has the effect of looking harsh and aging. If you are looking for a more natural look the general rule is to stay within two levels of lightness or darkness of your current natural colour. If you want a bold look, go for it and have fun with colour. Colour placement is as crucial as the colours chosen: balayage, ombre, baby lights, full highlights, base colour, low lights, pastel toning, double process and the list goes on; you may feel like you need a dictionary. Discuss the result you are looking for with your colourist and they can chose the most appropriate application technique for you. Lisa explained “Teaching students to colour hair is the most difficult theoretical subject they have to complete as the science is complex. Every colour is personalised, no two looks are identical as the natural hair colour plays a big part in the end result. I love the creativity of colouring and the transformations that can be created’. If you are looking for a colour change or some expert advice, book an appointment for a free colour consultation with Lisa our colour expert. Going, Going, Gone? ....or am I stuck with it? As a result of last month's article about new tattoos, Dr Poole has received a number of enquiries from people about tattoo removal. Whether it's an embarrassing inking from your teenage years or a tribute to a former lover, clearly some people have tattoos they would like to get rid of. From laser removal to skin grafts, these are some differing procedures for erasing the inks you regret, with some celebrities having led the way. Megan Fox had her Marilyn Monroe tattoo removed, Towie's Dan Osborne chose to lose his Michael Jackson tribute, Rita Ora didn't desire her rose tattoo any more, and Geordie Shore’s Holly Hagan had laser treatment to remove the tattoo of ex Kyle Christie's face! How does laser tattoo removal work? Nowadays, most tattoos are removed through a series of laser treatments. The energy from the laser breaks down the tattoo ink into tiny fragments, which are eventually absorbed into the bloodstream and safely passed out through the body. Some people may need 10 or more sessions to remove the ink completely, and some tattoos can't be entirely removed through laser procedures, meaning that sometimes people are left with patchy fragments on the skin. Tattoos with yellow, green and purple coloured ink are much harder to remove with lasers. And roughly 3% of patients will develop a permanent scar where their tattoo was. Other people choose to get their tattoos removed by going under the knife. With small tattoos, you can do this by cutting around the tattoo and stitching together the skin edges. With larger tattoos, this can be done in stages - by removing portions of the tattoo a few months at a time. A quicker alternative for big tattoos is skin grafting. A piece of your skin will be taken from another part of your body, and used to fill a gap where the tattoo was. However, there is a potential downside that the skin used may be of a different texture to the area where the tattoo was, meaning that it can look a bit dissimilar. But on the whole the operations are a quicker and less painful alternative to laser treatment. Yes, initially you could be left with some marks or scars, although these are likely to fade, just as a scar from a medical operation tends to become less obvious over time. If you are interested in making a clean slate of things, come and discus your situation with Dr Poole. The first consultation is always free, and you can investigate the best type of removal for you, how much it will cost, and what will it look like before, during and after. As well as being a GP, Dr Poole is also an International Master in Cosmetic Surgery. He will be very glad to assess any case and discuss every possible option in order to choose which one is best for you. Telephone 96 579 2418 or email on: clinicaarenal@gmail.com. Is it normal for my gums to bleed? In the 21st century more people lose their teeth due to gum disease than to decay. The good news is that gum disease can be treated if caught in its early stages and a simple routine check up with a thorough dentist will diagnose the disease immediately. If your gums bleed when you brush them, do not assume that it is normal because it is not. A common reaction to the sight of blood is to stop brushing or to think that you are brushing too hard. Whatever you do, DON'T STOP brushing. Make an appointment with your dentist so that he/ she can teach you exactly how to clean and floss your teeth and assess your gums and bone levels in the jaw. The longer you wait to solve this problem, the worse the gums become, the disease progresses silently, your teeth may start to move, and you may notice that your gums are receeding (again you may think that you are brushing too hard but this is one of the symptoms of gum disease). Later on, infections which are surprisingly painless arise (especially if you are on anti-inflammatories for arthritis, back pain or are diabetic... etc., as these mask the pain) and at this point the only solution may be to extract the affected teeth. In the early stages of gum disease the treatment involves scaling and root planing which means removing plaque and tartar around the teeth and root surfaces under local anaesthetic in conjunction with appropriate antibiotics. Three monthly maintenance cleans are required as well as meticulous home hygiene care with interdental brushes (of the right size), a good electric toothbrush and daily flossing (even if you don't like it!). Smokers are the most affected by gum disease as smoking reduces the blood supply to the jawbone and gums, and so smokers' gums do not bleed. When a problem occurs, the disease has progressed too far, 50% or more of the bone has been lost and teeth then have a poor long term prognosis. When you finally pluck up the courage to visit the dentist, even if some teeth cannot be saved, nowadays there is always a solution. Sometimes mobile teeth can be splinted to teeth either side to stop them from moving. Other times if you have waited too long, several teeth may need to be removed and either replaced by dentures or hopefully by a more fixed option i.e. implants and bridges. So, don't wait until it is too late and book that appointment to have your gums and teeth checked. At Zen Smile Spa we offer specialised treatments for gum disease and implants with our in house periodontist.

Bunions
Bunions or HAV?
The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise. What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet? We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues. Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring. (or other feet problems) CLÍNICA PODOLÓGICA PORTALET

Pain Free Dental Work It is probably a universal fact that we hate going to the dentist. There are 2 main reasons for this. Firstly, we think it is going to hurt and secondly, as humans we have a built in fear of the unknown. When you lie back in that chair and the drilling starts, you cannot see or even hear what’s going on – and that naturally makes us nervous. It doesn’t have to be this way. At Bludent, we have installed a modern, state-of-the-art dental clinic (to very high Scandinavian standards) with you, the patient, in mind. Our training and philosophy are rooted not only in dental practice, but that of pedagogy. Having a Scandinavia philosophy has taught us it is so important not to start unless you have gained the trust and confidence of the patient. We take as much time as necessary to explain upfront what’s going to happen – and then we go one stage further. We have installed live digital video monitoring so you can actually see what’s going on. Your first reaction might be that this is a scary proposition, but research and experience has shown us that when a patient can see what we’re doing, the fear of the unknown disappears. In fact, many patients comment how much they enjoyed the openness and ‘honesty’ of the experience. Our digital equipment extends to other areas such as x-rays and the like. We specialise in aesthetic, painless treatment as well as implants and other complex surgery. In fact, implants were invented in Sweden some 40 years ago, so living and training in Scandinavia gave us first hand knowledge how to do these properly. What may surprise you is that we often try to avoid implants if possible. They may be a ‘fix’ but sometimes there is a less invasive, quicker solution. We see many patients with expensive implants that simply weren’t required! Our dentists – Dr Kardo Hedati from Sweden and his experienced dental team, have many, many years of experience between them and are natural English speakers. You can discuss any issues and concerns you may have with a free consultation. Unusually for dentists, we offer a 24hour emergency service – we don’t believe treating pain should wait for normal office hours! You might think the level of service would be a bit on the pricey side – not so. You’ll find our prices extremely competitive. In any case all work is quoted in advance, so you can avoid any surprises.
FREE FIRST CONSULATATION WHEN YOU MENTION FEMALE FOCUS Bludent is located in Cala de Finestrat, right on the beach. It’s easy to find with easy parking. Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad.
Travel broadens the mind Catalonia’s deposed president Carlos Puigdemont has thanked German hosts for an “enriching” experience while enjoying an enforced break within its borders – and at one time within a prison cell. He was on a return journey from Finland to his home-in-exile in Belgium when he had his collar felt, the ‘feds’ acting on an international arrest warrant issued by Madrid - the Catalonia leader was forced to flee Spain after declaring independence - and was behind bars in Germany for 10 days before being granted bail. And he was quick to praise the German legal system after an extradition request from Spain was rejected; a judge ruled he could not be sent back to Spain as a charge of ‘rebellion’ was not recognised in Deutschland. Following a change at the helm in Madrid, the warrant has now been withdrawn against Carlos and some of his chums now living abroad. Retreating back to his base at Waterloo, Mr Puigdemont has resumed the battle for independence and is now free to wander most parts of Europe ...although he is still a wanted man in Spain where the charges of rebellion and misuse of public funds are outstanding. Back in Catalonia itself, his successor as leader, Quim Torra, has underlined that he considers Mr Puigdemont to be the “legitimate president” of the region that would be independent. And the separatists are currently basking in warmer relations with Madrid and the new socialist government headed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. However, the two sides remain poles apart over the demand for another poll on independence; “unconstitutional” the country’s leaders continue to repeat. Back in Belgium, President Puigdemont has called for the PM to do his homework, warning that once the summer holidays and the honeymoon is over, things will again get serious. Meanwhile on the beaches of Catalonia, separatists are reminded there are two sides to every story. It has become fashionable to lie on a beach towel in the yellow and red of Spain and emblazoned with the country’s coat of arms under an umbrella in the same colours. The silly season (part 1) Feeding frenzy amongst Fleet Street’s finest as a pensioner reveals her Benidorm break was ruined by “too many Spaniards” at the Poseidon Playa and has complained to Thomas Cook – with a demand for a full refund of the £1,133 she and her friend paid for the (May) trip. Retired care assistant Freda Jackson, 81, complained the hotel was full of “rude” Spanish holidaymakers who “really got on our nerves” and wondered why the natives did not head somewhere else for a break. Seizing on the comments about the “disaster”, British newspapers played down more genuine complaints that the two friends had asked for a hotel on the flat rather than in the hills because of mobility issues and had be moved to the second floor from the 14th for the same reason – to cap it all, apparently there were no reps to help sort out the mess. Thomas Cook has offered the pair a gesture of goodwill – a payment of £566 to share – and is investigating the inconvenience caused by the booking. The silly season (part 2) British redtop tabloids again broke sweat with stories about Spanish ‘sickos’ encouraging Brits to test their sporting skills and indulge in the deadly craze of ‘balconing’. Female Focus September 2018
Leaping off balconies in an attempt to plunge into the waters of a swimming pool or to reach another balcony is an unusual test of Newton physics and, sadly, it has cost lives. However, posters and graffiti in Barcelona, Magaluf and Ibiza are appearing, as part of the growing campaign to control tourist numbers because locals are priced out of the property market, and the drunken antics of visitors. Anyone appreciating the darker side of Spanish humour might actually consider it all very tongue in cheek. One poster read: “Dear tourist, did you know balconing prevents gentrification, improves neighbours’ quality of life, reduces the risk of heart disease and is lots of fun?” In reality balconing is illegal, and many resorts have outlawed the practice with people facing fines over the deadly practice ...presumably those caught about to jump and those who survive a leap of faith. The silly season (part 3) August has come and gone. The coast is clear and there is room to stretch out, breathe and relax. It’s been another bumper summer for the tourism industry and all the businesses that rely on visitors have hopefully enjoyed another successful high season – and it has been fun too, just ‘people watching’ as the annual invasion takes place. However, it is nice to actually have room to put an elbow on the bar, be able to find a table at the local restaurant, and park the car somewhere actually in the vicinity of a place called home.

What to do if someone is stung by a Wasp, Bee or Hornet
Our last two articles have been about jellyfish stings and snake bites. Fortunately both of these are very rare, but nearly everyone has stung by a wasp or bee at one time or another. Coroners’ data suggests that an average of four deaths from wasp or bee stings occur each year in the UK, but this is almost certainly an underestimate because venom anaphylaxis is not always recognised as the cause of death.
Figures are not readily attainable for Spain, but are thought to be about twice the UK average because of the prevalence of wasps, bees and hornets (hornets are the largest of the eusocial wasp family). So it is important to know what to do in the event of an insect sting, especially so if you, or someone you know begins to experience the severe symptoms listed below shortly after being stung. Usual symptoms Most stings usually cause a mild reaction as your body reacts to the venom which is injected into you. This can result in symptoms at the site of the sting, such as: • redness • swelling • pain • itching
Severe symptoms
The severity of the symptoms can vary, and some people also develop a severe allergic reaction which can cause: • hives • abdominal cramps • nausea and vomiting • swelling of your face, lips, or throat • breathing problems • shock If you or someone you know begins to experience the above symptoms shortly after being stung by an insect, call 112 for an ambulance, or if you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea then call our 24hr emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-of-the-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and on its way to you. A severe allergic reaction that affects multiple parts of your body is called anaphylaxis. It can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. First aid treatment for someone showing NO signs of a severe reaction: Treat the site of the sting for minor symptoms: • If the insect’s stinger is still embedded in their skin, remove it by gently scraping a flat-edged object, such as a credit card, across their skin. • Avoid using tweezers to remove the stinger, since squeezing it may release more venom. • Wash the area of the sting with soap and water. • Place a cold compress or ice pack on the area for about 10 minutes at a time to help reduce pain and swelling. • Wrap any ice or ice packs in a clean cloth to protect the skin. • Apply calamine lotion or other antihistamine cream to the area several times a day to help relieve itching and pain. Emergency treatment for someone who IS showing the signs of a severe allergic reaction: • Help them get emergency medical attention as we have described above. • Ask the person whether they carry an epinephrine auto-injector. If they do, retrieve it for them and help them use it according to the label directions. • Encourage them to remain calm, lie down quietly with their legs elevated, and stay still. • If they start to vomit, turn them onto their side to allow the vomit to drain and prevent choking. • If they become unconscious and stop breathing, begin CPR. Continue it until medical help arrives. • Do not apply a tourniquet, and you should also avoid giving them anything to eat or drink.

A View From The South
Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. It ain't half hot Mum. The title of this piece is of course pinched from the wonderful TV series of the same name ...Windsor Davies et al kept me enthralled with their portrayal of a Wartime concert party in India during World War II. This narrative however is bang up to date and is concerned with the roastingly hot summer us natives of South Western Spain experienced. I don’t know about you Dear Reader, but I have been living here in and around the Quesada/ Benijofar area for many years and to date this was the most sweaty, uncomfortable and downright tiring Summer I can remember. My appetite all but went ...the thought of food centred around ...another slice of toast (ironic I know) or maybe a cold drink and a biscuit and God forbid even my appetite for a cold glass of beer took a downturn ...although I still made an extra effort as far as a beer was concerned. The good thing is that my attempt to eat better after my health problems of late last year

Driving around the urbanisations, one thing that stands out are the number of new and refurbished houses that are being worked on. I remember a time here when in August nothing was worked upon or a least almost nothing. A Pet Is For Life Adopting a pet is something that has to be well thought about. Many people rush in only to find that they made the wrong decision afterwards. The choice you make does not only have consequences for your own life but it is also a choice you make for another living being. An unwanted animal is a very unhappy animal, even if its physical needs are being met. Every year thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits, tortoises, hamsters are being abandoned or returned by their owners because reaching the wrong decision was so easy. Being the considerate and responsible person you are, you will want to make sure that you only get a pet if you can give him or her a good life with you. So let's start with the advantages of having a pet before we get to the facts which speak against pet keeping. Pro - A pet brings happiness and joy into your life. - A pet gives you the opportunity to share your love and caring. - If you are living on your own a pet keeps you company. - Animals give unconditional love - they don't care who you are, what you are or how much you earn. - Pets make great companions for kids, helping them in times of emotional turmoil or trouble as well as educating them about nature and non human beings. - Kids learn how to be more understanding, patient and responsible in their actions when they grow up with a pet.
&
Con - Owning a pet means being responsible for another being who depends fully on his caretaker. This responsibility may be experienced as a burden at times. Page 27 - If you lead a very busy life, being responsible for the physical as well as the emotional needs of a pet may be too much. - Who is going to look after your pet when you go on holidays or, heaven forbid, if you have to go to hospital? - Animals have physical needs just as we do. They need to eat and get rid of waste material. This means that you will have to put up with certain smells in your house, no matter how clean you keep your pet. If you are very house proud or maybe even a bit compulsive when it comes to bacteria, if you like a spotless place to live in, animal hair and dander might not be for you. - Keeping a pet may be quite expensive. You need money to feed the animal and to provide healthcare. Depending on the species this may amount to a considerable sum each month. - I know of many good hearted people who underestimated this important factor only to find themselves in serious debt after the illness of their beloved animal. Just imagine the heartbreak of having a pet put to sleep just because you could not find the money to pay for necessary surgery or treatment! www.femalefocusonline.com
Even though there are many animals which are suitable for all different life styles we must never forget that animals are sentient beings who fully depend on their people. Remember: A pet is for life!

Keeping the sun at bay At this time of the year many a room can turn into a greenhouse with the sun beating down through the glass of your windows. This can make even being in the room unbearable let alone the damaging effect on furnishings and furniture. Voiles and sheers can bring some shade but provide limited protection from the heat and the UV, and having to shut persianas or lined curtains leaves you in a room without a view and shut off from the world. Help is at hand It’s for rooms like these, that receive the direct impact of the sun, that our Screen Blinds are the perfect solution for. By far our most popular type of roller blind, they are made from polyscreen fabrics which are ultra-resistant to fading or degradation from UV and can be easily cleaned using mild detergents. Speciality Fabrics The mesh effect of the weave allows a great deal of outward visibility during the day without the room losing privacy. The material filters the sun's rays whilst letting in the maximum amount of light, thus protecting furniture from damage by sunlight, and by filtering the sun’s rays it helps to lower the temperature of a sun drenched room. In fact many of our clients are sceptical about just how good the heat protection will be, but once installed no one is disappointed and suddenly an unbearably hot room is liveable in again. Aesthetically pleasing Available from small to extra-large dimensions and able to be fully motorised and automated, screen blinds can be used to give year round protection as a substitute for shutters, and are often seen as a standard fit in the large glassed areas of Ibizan style villas. This speciality fabric is also available as vertical blinds and Japanese panels which look particularly good at larger windows. The fabrics themselves come in a good range or colours, from simple whites, beiges and greys to subtle mixes of colours in the threads that give the effect of linen. So whatever your colour scheme or style of villa, from modern to traditional, there will be a finish that suits you. Give us a call So suffer no more from the heat of the sun, and protect your precious furniture by installing screen blinds. We can even fit them behind your current curtains. Simply give us a call at the studio to arrange your no obligation home visit and we'll bring the samples, measure up and give you a quotation.

Homemade eco-friendly cleaning solutions
Many of today's over-the-counter, store-bought cleaning agents contain high amounts of harmful chemicals and toxic solutions. Not only can these be dangerous to humans, pets, and wildlife, they can also damage your home's plumbing systems, septic tanks, appliances, and more. Various products on the market today fail to specify their dangerous chemicals on the ingredients label. So, the best way to avoid contact with these types of dangerous products is to simply replace them with safer alternatives. There are several environmentally friendly cleaning products on the market that can be purchased at your local department store; however, many homeowners suggest creating your very own cleaning solutions! Making your own chemical-free household cleaning products is extremely rewarding. Best of all, it is a lot less expensive and easy to do! How to Make Homemade Cleaners: Purchase quality spray bottles. Choose bottles measured on the outside as this will help you measure and mix solutions quicker and easier. Also, always label each bottle with the type of cleaning agents inside. For example, if the solution is for your kitchen, label it, "Kitchen Cleaner", or something similar. Here is a list of possible ingredients that can be used to create your own homemade cleaning solution: Distilled White Vinegar - Baking Soda - Borax or Washing Soda (Stronger than Standard Baking Soda-Optional) - Olive Oil-Based Soap - Coconut Oil-Based Soap - Castile Soap - Water Safety Note: Although you are making eco-friendly and safe cleaning products, keep these solutions locked up and out-of-reach from children, pets, and wildlife. No one wants to be responsible for a sick animal or child. If these solutions are ever ingested in large quantities, immediately seek medical attention. Cleaning Your Home: When cleaning your kitchen with ecofriendly solutions, use a mixture of baking soda, Borax, or washing soda with a little bit of vegetable soap and warm water. This solution can be applied on counters, floors, appliances, and other surfaces. For ovens and appliances, mix baking soda and washing soda with a little bit of water to make a paste. Generously apply the paste and allow it to sit overnight. Then wash away in the morning for best results. For countertop cleaning, gently scrub an even mixture of these same ingredients, and then rinse with clean water. For cutting boards, use a mixture of vinegar and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Bottle each solution separately, spraying first with the vinegar and second with the hydrogen peroxide. Repeat these steps until you achieve a clean surface. Drains, Sinks, Tubs, and More: Use the same solutions and recipes for bathroom tiles, bathtubs, bathroom countertops, toilets, and sinks. For drains, use a combination of baking soda and vinegar. First poor half cup of baking soda down the drain, and then pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain. Allow the drain to rest for a few minutes and then run hot water through the drain until it is unclogged. Female Focus September 2018

Gardens Make the Wow Factor I have designed and built many gardens, small, large and the massively impressive. I have built gardens here in Spain and the UK, be them very small projects to some for the wealthiest people in the UK, and at Chelsea Flower Show, but there is always one simple thing that strings them all together and that is that gardens make the Wow Factor in your home. Let me put it this way, imagine a big house, you may think, that’s an impressive home, but if you add an amazing garden space to all of this, suddenly your perspective changes to ‘Oh Wow what an amazing place’. The addition of the garden gives a feel of grandeur, luxury and a lifestyle that sometimes seems unaffordable. But this has been created simply by good design and starting. With gardens you must start somewhere and the sooner you start the sooner your garden will become an amazing space as well. Gardens give so much from not just an aesthetic point of view, but a more holistic aspect as they seem to enrich our souls, which is why apart from the odd few people, in general everyone loves an impressive garden. The same goes for small gardens, I have visited many a small plot where the owners have done nothing and it just feels empty, not private or personal, yet if you visit a small garden where the garden has been completed, immediately you feel embraced, you have privacy and they often look amazing, as in small gardens you can really get a lot of bang for your buck.

Page 33 www.femalefocusonline.com All of this, be it large garden or small garden is done firstly by employing a proper garden designer, such as myself. The point of the designer is to give the ideas and break up the space and levels in ways that you may not have imagined, to immediately start to put some feeling of movement and intrigue into the space. The core of the garden is the hard landscaping, so having this backbone of the design organised and correct is crucial. The hard landscaping is crucial in so many ways not just from the layout of the garden design, but in making sure that all services, electricity, water, drainage and other vital services for the garden are taken care of. Then comes the soft landscaping, the plants and the finishing elements. Both parts are equally as important to the project as an imbalance of either will spoil the overall affect, therefore knowing your plants and their beginning and end sizes is all part of the understanding of how the garden works.

Plants of the month. As we are have just come through summer and most plants take a heat bashing and therefore tend to not flower massively, I have decided to pick two plants that don’t flower or don’t have showy flowers but are big on structure, they are also two of my favourite plants. The first is Phormium Tenax Vaiegata. This is a great staple plant as its foliage is striking and, coupled with its form it really makes a statement, it is a great plant to hide things and to give a tropical feel to the garden. The second is Cupressus Sempivirens Stricta, or Pencil Pine to many. This is a favourite plant of mine as once they become established they require zero attention, yet when positioned correctly are stunning. They are one of the most iconic Mediterranean plants. They are also great from the point that they are a vertical plant, so they can be used even in small gardens as they do not occupy as much space as a standard shrub or tree. We are specialists in Garden Design, Landscape/ Garden Construction and the management of garden design projects from start to finish, dealing with the customer at our core, using standard to unique materials to give the ultimate gardens - small or large. Before you do anything with your garden, make sure you monopolise on what you really have by calling the specialists, Charlesworth Gardens.

Safely slip into your pool! The heat continues here into September with holiday makers continuing to enjoy this glorious weather and spending plenty of time in and around the pool. Do you rent out your villa? Do you have slippy tiles surrounding the pool and other areas? We have heard of many accidents that have happened around pool areas; broken arms, chipped elbows and smashed knee caps to name but a few! We all love our pools and want to enjoy them to their fullest without the worry of injury. It’s terrible news if you or a family member hurt themselves but if you are renting out your villa, then you could be in line for costly personal injury claims too. SinSlip can take all that worry away with their anti-slip treatment. SinSlip provide a permanent fix for your slippy tiles. When applied, the solution will microscopically change the surface structure of the tile making it anti-slip. Best of all the treatment is not a coating, so it will not wear off. The nature of our product enables the work to be completed in a short period of time, creating the minimal amount of disruption, and the treated area will be ready for use immediately. Once treated your tiles will be safe when wet, for many years to come. Visit www.sinslip.com for more info or to arrange a free onsite evaluation and demonstration.

Book Review by Ivor Kindle
Book Titles: 1. Conquest 2. Crusade 3. Anarchy Author: Stewart Binns Publisher: Penguin Books. The year is 1066...Harold, having just beaten the Danes at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, marches his army down to Senlac Ridge to do battle with the Norman invader William. The battle becomes a centerpoint date in English history. Within Harold's army is one Hereward of Bourne..(the Wake) ...he survives the battle and escapes the battlefield. This is just the start of a fabulous trilogy of inter linked books ...through all three books the characters change as the years advance giving the reader a great view of early English/ Norman history. As the titles suggest the plot moves to the first Crusades and onward to a wonderful generational leap in the make up of the family of both Hereward the Wake and the family of William the Conqueror. These books are both a brilliant story and a wonderful insight into the history of Early England ...the Norman conquest and the history of both near and far Europe and the Middle East. I have read these three books in a matter of a week or so ...they are that good to read.

Things holiday rental owners need to be aware of when renting their property for next season…. Another Summer season is almost over, and now is the time when property owners are already starting to consider and make plans for next year. With the ever increasing legal requirements in force within the Valencian Community, more and more owners are now turning to property management companies and rental agencies to manage their properties. Most holiday rental owners know by now they must have a tourist licence number, which must be stated in all property advertisements. However, very few owners are aware that they must also have a plaque displayed at their property. Did you know, that owners must also have signage informing guests of an available complaints book, which must be obtained from the Territorial Services of Commerce and Consumption. The owner is also required to register all guests over 16 years of age with the National Police or Guardia Civil (depending on the town) within 24 hours of the guest’s arrival, the personal data of which must be processed and collected by the owner in accordance with GDPR compliance – General Data Protection Regulation of 26 May 2018. Rentals of more than four months, including winter rental contracts, require additional certification available to the guest. These are just a few examples of what holiday rental owners are now required to deliver. Failure to meet the requirements of the new legislation, could result in the owner incurring a fine. If you are a property owner in search of a property management company / rental agency to assist you in meeting the legislative requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us! The Lions Club of Calpe & Benissa raises money to support a variety of local causes such as the Foodbank, Caritas in Calpe and Benissa, and the Gargasindi Special Educational Needs School. Recently Fiona Hulme and Margaret Ferguson, representing the Lions, visited The Franciscan Hospice in Palma de Gandia. This is a home for around 67 homeless men, some with mental or physical illness, and some who are terminally ill. The hospice is run by three Franciscan Brothers, and is funded entirely through charitable donations. The Lions donated 250€ worth of foodstuffs and cleaning materials, along with a wheelchair, medicines and hygiene products. The volunteer staff at this wonderfully tranquil refuge were most grateful for these essential basic items, which are always needed to keep the centre functioning. It's thanks to supporters and volunteers that The Lions are able to continue to support people in need.
Thank you Phyll from The Lions The Calpe & Benissa Lions have a charity shop in Calle Pintor Sorolla 15, Calpe, and over the last several years they have raised money to help and support local people in need. The shop could not operate without their loyal and reliable band of volunteers, all of whom give at least one morning a week to sort through donations, keep the shop looking neat and welcoming, and of course help our customers. Phyllis Cridland has been volunteering from the very first day the shop opened in 2014, and she has now decided to ‘retire’. It’s people like Phyll who make the shop a happy place to work, and she will be missed by all. The Lions wish her a relaxing future and thank her for all her efforts over the years. our ARIES Things are becoming less frantic and at last you may have some time for yourself. Use it wisely or it will just pass by with nothing being achieved. That doesn't mean to say you can't just read a book or watch that film you have been wanting to see. Just don't waste it away! TAURUS If you are thinking of making some changes in the home, now may not be the best time to do it. Are you really that unhappy with the way it is or is it just a reaction to an extreme set of circumstances you may never have again. GEMINI After a stressful time things seem to be settling down and you can start to think to the future instead of just surviving the moment. Plan carefully and you really could see some amazing times ahead. CANCER A monetary misunderstanding has left you in a awkward position. Being firm but fair will not solve it completely, but will put things back on some kind of road to resolution. LEO After all the fun and excitement of recent months it seems a bit too quiet in your world at the moment. There is still plenty going on if you go and look for it, and it could bring you new interests and friends. VIRGO Look around and get those jobs done that you have been putting off over the summer. Apart from things looking and working much better the sense of achievement will give you the boost to tackle some others.

oroscope LIBRA Don't let someone close to you manipulate you into doing something you are not sure about. Take more time to think it through before you make your final decision. In the end you may do exactly what they wanted, just make sure it's what you want. SCORPIO Your social scene will take off over the next month and you will be the life and soul of the party. You deserve it as it has been all work and no play recently. The summer has made you rethink your work, play balance once and for all. SAGITTARIUS Putting all your energy into one thing could mean you are neglecting too much. Take care otherwise you will be playing catch up for a long time. Check your finances, you may have to tighten your belt a little after splashing out over summer. CAPRICORN New ideas and opportunities make you rethink the direction you are going. A little tweak or a radical change may make all the difference to your future. Not doing anything will mean more of the same. AQUARIUS Emotions are running high so you need to keep calm and clear headed or you will not be able to stop yourself saying exactly what you think. This may seem like a good idea, but it's not. PISCES Team work always seems like hard work but with a change of just a few players things are now running much more smoothly. It's now up to everyone to keep it that way and not let things start to slip again.

U3A Vall Del Pop Go to Cirque du Soleil On Friday 10 August 50 members of the U3A set off from Jalon to go to the circus Cirque du Soleil who are performing in Alicante. A circus with no animals. The performance was breath-taking, with fantastic interactive projection technology scenery, a myriad of costumes as the performers told the story of the evolution of humanity, the Totem's theme, and a fully articulated scorpion bridge that formed shapes that seemed impossible for a structure – was well worth seeing in its own right. The 52 performers gave breath-taking performances full of skill, coordination, strength and perfect timing. It is impossible to put into words the quality of each and every performance as they told the story of the Professor discovering the evolution of humanity. There were gymnasts, hoop dancers with both large and small hoops, high trapeze, diabolos, contortionist and fortunately there were clowns, as no circus would ever be complete without clowns, although these clowns were technically much more proficient than those slap-stick clowns I remember as a child. For me the best three acts were – Manipulation of LED lit balls in a giant glass cone; Unicycles, where the performers were on 7 foot high unicycles flicking dishes, up to five at one time, from their foot to be caught on the head of their colleague, both forward and backwards, and the highlight was the Russian Bars where acrobats performed jumps and somersaults off and back to the bars held at shoulder height by their support team. The two hours of performance passed in a flash with each act a presentation of the highest skill so that I did not realise – there were no animals, other than a few performers dressed as monkeys. It is very much a must be seen experience. Every one of the U3A group had been fascinated by the experience and each had their own best act. On the way back to Jalon the group gave Sonia Higginbottom their very grateful thanks for a wonderful opportunity, and congratulations on securing such excellent seats. For further information on U3A Vall del Pop check our website [http://u3avalldelpop.com]. Teulada – Moraira Lions Final Summer Concert and First Autumn Show Sunday 19 August saw the final TM Lions Summer concert this year. An excellent concert, on a lovely evening, in a glorius setting was opened up by local performer Adam Daniels, who entertained the crowd with great style and flair with his semi acoustic set of popular and classic songs – a real crowd pleaser. Adam was immediately followed by the inimitable SWAG who once again had the audience up and dancing with their high energy show featuring popular songs from the charts. This was a great finale to the Lions series of Summer concerts this year and Lion President Laura Hillstead thanked all involved in presenting such magnificent events in the town free of charge, especially the Ayuntamiento, the bands, Magnum PA, Lighting & Logistics and of course our generous supporters. Our first show this Autumn in Espai La Senieta, Moraira features the inimitable “Manhatton Jazz” with Jef Hatton, who has kindly agreed to perform for us on his visit to Spain. This will be a great show of popular jazz tunes by very accomplished musicians. Manhatton Jazz have enjoyed a great following here on the Costa Blanca and we are very pleased to be able to present this one off performance. The tickets are only 12.50€ and we will have a complimentary bar and raffle. For tickets and information on our shows please call 96 649 9954 or email: tmlions.concerts@gmail.com. Jávea U3A all aboard for a taste of culture and cuisine Report and pictures by Jávea U3A Communications Officer Ian Rogerson.
Fifty members of Jávea U3A’s Spanish Culture & Cuisine group enjoyed a 10-day river cruise experiencing the tradition, gastronomy and Flamenco in the Andalusian region of southern Spain. The trip included a cruise along the River Guadalquivir into the Atlantic Ocean to the vibrant city of Cadiz and excursions to Cordoba, Jerez and Granada as well as tours of Seville, their ship’s “home port”. Highlights of the holiday included a performance by our very own singer/guitarist Bobby (“Valentine”) Johnson, a Spanish-themed evening at which guests were able to dress up in traditional red and yellow attire, and an excellent show put on by the ship’s crew. The party, led by group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie, travelled by coach from Jávea, spending the first night in a hotel in the heart of Almeria’s old quarter. Members were free to explore the town and visit the sights including the beautiful Almeria Cathedral, before enjoying dinner together in the hotel. The following day, they continued their coach journey towards Malaga, visiting the historic Concepcion botanical gardens, before boarding the ship, MS La Belle de Cadix, moored on the river in Seville. The next day they travelled to Cordoba for a guided tour of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a visit to the unique Mezquita cathedral, which was erected in the 13th century on the site of the Great Mosque of Cordoba. Its spectacular interior includes pillars and arches from its 8th century Arab birth as well as beautifully preserved Roman features. Next port of call was Cadiz and an evening stroll around the city centre, bustling with Saturday night revellers. The following day, the group visited a “ganaderia” (where bulls are bred and raised) and enjoyed a demonstration of horsemanship and bull-herding. Back on board the ship, after-dinner entertainment was provided by traditional Flamenco dancing – and one of our party, former president Peter Allin, couldn’t resist the chance to demonstrate his skills by joining (after much persuasion) the dancers on stage! Members got a taste of the best sherries in Spain on a visit to the Osbourne cellar at El Puerto de Santa Maria – then later that afternoon were treated to an equestrian Flamenco show at a genuine Andalusian hacienda at Isla Minima. There was a chance the following day for members to visit the Alhambra pleasure palace and Generalife gardens in Granada, but unfortunately only four of the group decided to take up the challenge of a very early start and a long coach journey … although the formidable four who did make it thoroughly enjoyed the experience! When the ship returned guests to its base, there were further outings to savour, including a visit to the Chocomundo Museo de Chocolate, the largest chocolate museum in Spain, and the Wharf of the Caravels, where guests were able to board full-size replicas of three wooden ships used in Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the Americas in the 15th century. There was also a visit to the Dolmens of Antequera, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered one of the most important engineering and architectural works of European pre-history, where one of the upright stones weighs 180 tonnes, more than four times the weight of the heaviest stone at Stonehenge. After a last-night stay in the Finca Eslava hotel-spa, the group boarded the coach for the homeward journey, stopping off to visit a sheepcheese farm, before enjoying an excellent lunch en route back to Jávea. Congratulations and thanks to organisers Angela and Tony for a brilliantly-run trip; and members showed their appreciation by clubbing together to present them with a token of their gratitude. Now many of them are looking forward to the next Spanish Culture and Cuisine river cruise …. on the Duoro from Portugal to Spain next April. The Original Charity Shop celebrates the first anniversary in the new shop On Friday, 17 August, Jávea’s Original Charity Shop celebrated the first anniversary of the move to new premises. A brilliant team of volunteers spent several exhausting weeks painting, cleaning, sorting, packing, installing shelving etc. and then actually moving a massive amount of goods to the new shop. Again big thanks to everyone involved – it was well worth the effort. Since we opened at our more spacious and professional premises, we are delighted to report that the relocation has proved to be way beyond our expectations – and it can only get better! The shop is really beautiful, with a very pleasant atmosphere, so that volunteers, customers and clients are all very impressed by the result of this venture. Although the move was challenging, we now have many more clients and customers, and we are busier than ever. It is also very gratifying to see so many more Spanish locals and holidaymakers taking advantage of our amazing bargains. We have definitely reached a higher level of satisfaction and confidence as far as our customers and clients are concerned, all due to the hard work put in on a daily basis by our many volunteers. Thank you everyone! The Original Charity Shop is situated on Carrer de Nancy 1, in Jávea’s Arenal area. We are open from Mon. to Sat. from 10 am to 1 pm. The Original Charity Library is situated in Jávea Park and is presently involved in the Books2africa project. To find out more about the shop or library please visit www.charityshoplibrary.com or email: info@charityshoplibrary.com.

Living in Denia? Trying to Sell? We Hear You! The Hamiltons formula has proven to be very successful. Between our 3 current offices, we’re selling dozens of properties every month. Of course, we’re proud of this, but more importantly, we’re delighted to have helped so many property owners sell their properties and move on to the next stage of their life. We’re delighted to announce that we’re bringing our success story to Denia and surrounding villages, including La Xara, La Sella, Pedreguer, Gata de Gorgos, Gata Residencial, Pego and Monte Pego. You’ve probably seen our CALL, LIST, SELL campaign (see previous page), and when we think of what makes our formula so successful it’s really that simple. Of course, the devil is in the detail and we take enormous care to get things right, including employing and training enough staff to give the highest levels of personal, yet professional service. We’ve had our eye on Denia for quite some time, waiting for the right moment to make a move. We’re now taking listings, building our website and in the process of finding the right location for our office. We’re often asked about the secret to our success in selling homes, and it comes down to a well executed simple strategy. 1 - Call Hamiltons It’s that simple, just pick up your phone and dial 96 649 1883. We’ll ask a few questions, get a feel for what you’re wanting to achieve and then arrange a visit to list your property. 2 - List with Hamiltons When we visit, we’ll get to know each other a bit better, take a look around and give you an honest appraisal of the value of your property. If you like what you hear, we’ll take lots of photos, take some measurements and note down the important details. We then head back to the office and upload to our various websites.
Female Focus September 2018
We then print out a window card and submit your property to international portals. 3 - Selling From the listing, we generate viewings of prospective buyers. We do our best to match your property to buyers’ needs so as to not waste anyone’s time. In time, you’ll receive an offer and if that’s accepted, we then hand-hold all parties through the sale ending up at the Notary for completion.
Living in or around Denia? Call to list your property today. So, if you’re living in Denia or the surrounding areas and you want to sell your property, call us on 96 649 1883 and we’ll get the ball rolling. It really is as simple as 1-2-3!
