Specsavers launches a student-designed glasses collection SPANISH influences can be found in a new student-designed collection now available in all Specsavers Opticas stores. The unique Design Collective range, of 16 glasses and sunglasses, is designed by four students, drawing on personal inspirations to create a range that celebrates individuality, encouraging everyone to wear their specs with pride. One of the designers is Emily Hill, who studied Footwear Design at London College of Fashion (UAL) and drew inspiration from her year-long placement as a footwear designer for Zara Woman in Spain. She says it was a combination of the beautiful and decorative architecture in London and Spain that inspired her designs. ‘I have come to appreciate the architectural detail of the incredible churches and buildings that are so well preserved in Spain,’ she says. ‘I spent a long time going around the building, taking my sketchbook and drawing. There was a church in Alicante that I loved to sketch. There was a restaurant opposite and I used to sketch while having something to eat or drink. My glasses designs are inspired by decorative architecture. I’ve taken baroque and rococo details and given them a modern twist with shape and colour.’ Emily says she had an amazing experience in Spain, working with a fantastic team at Zara, in a sunny climate and immersed in the Spanish culture.
Female Focus September 2019
This experience, together with her studies, has helped her to land her new role as an assistant designer at Kurt Geiger. On top of this, she now gets to see her glasses collection in Specsavers stores. ‘In my opinion, glasses can be a big part of someone’s identity,’ she says. ‘This design competition has been a fantastic opportunity. It’s given us a platform to step into the design world and it’s so exciting to see our products come to life.’ The Design Collective range is now in stores nationwide now and glasses lovers, looking to express their style through their specs, can choose two pairs for €129. The four designers – Emily Hill, Lydia Blackshaw, Tiffany Bachelet and Joshua Teodoro – entered Specsavers’ inaugural design competition last year, with their creations chosen from more than 140 entries.
New look for Jávea store The Specsavers Opticas Jávea store is being given a fresh, new look when it undergoes a refit. As well as improvements inside the store, customers can still expect the same great customer service, value and expertise. The store will be temporarily closed between 31 August and 10 September, for this work.

A week back in the UK in trousers and jumpers followed by a week of visitors meant we had a full on, but fantastic August.
It was the first time I had flown for many years and so I was not used to all the automated systems. I managed not to look too much of a novice but the eye scanner is not my friend and I had to be manually processed each time. I flew into Doncaster airport which is tiny - ours was the only plane there but they still managed to park it at the furthest point of the airport so we had to walk to the terminal. Not sure what the thinking is behind that but felt sorry for the families trying to juggle kids and cases. I had my 9.7 kilos of luggage (allowance of 10 kilos) with everything from jumpers to shorts as couldn't work out what an English summer would feel like. Let's just say I didn't need my summer gear! Came back overweight (the case - not me) by 5 kilos as could not resist a lovely set of brass weights I saw in a second hand shop - the irony.... Fortunately they didn't weigh my luggage. Hope you all had a great summer. y

We are happy to announce that the single parents´ charity Guardian Angels has everything in place for an incredibly diverse day out for all the family! Putting the FUN into FUNDRAISING! A special guided tour of the house including a piano recital from one of Europe's leading solo pianists Lola Smolokowski will be available for 5€. Mark Stacey will be joining us for the day for what we are calling (tongue in cheek of course) “Stacey's Real Steals.” No, Mr Stacey won't nick anything! But he will let you know if any of your quirky bits and bobs, heirlooms or antiquities are a bit of a “steal!” Mark will be bringing his legendary professional advice to Jávea - along with all his charms - as seen on BBC's 'Flog it' 'Bargain Hunt' and 'Antiques road trip' to help this important charity. For a mere 5€ Mark will give all visitors a valuation on their treasured possessions. "I did this same event six years ago and it was amazing the treasures we found from our visitors, I am excited to see what will turn up this time." says Mark. Other attractions include a variety of stalls. Christmas is coming and we know you will be very impressed by an assortment of artistic, practical and unique present ideas. We are also very excited this year to have an Art Gallery with artwork from some incredibly talented local artists with stunning works on sale at generous prices. Further entertainment will take place on the central stage, with Bay Radio and will include fashion shows from three different fashion houses. Also, the children's dance group from 'Footworks' will be performing together with a special guest appearance from one of our newest musician talents on the Costa Blanca - the extremely talented Gingerlele, on vocals and ukulele. Last but not least are boundless cuddles with the dogs and puppies from APROP - all looking for forever-homes. Tombola organised by Jacky from Tanamera Podenco Rescue. Guardian Angels supports single parents within our community on the Costa Blanca. Founded in 2010, we are a secular charity dedicated to helping ease the isolation of single-parent families with an on call network of support. Our aim is to offer help in many forms such as mentoring, counselling, legal information, medical help, translation and much more. We also try to get lone mums and dads into the right, positive mind-set through a series of workshops designed to improve the self-esteem of both parents and children, whilst helping to deal with the emotional and mental stress of raising a family single-handed. Do I need a Spanish will? It's a subject that no-one likes talking about – but it is a conversation that everyone needs to have. Have you got your affairs in order if anything should happen to you? Estimates vary, but it is generally agreed that around two thirds of British people do not have a will. And if a British national who owns assets in Spain dies without a will, matters can – and do - become rather complicated. The Spanish legal system is very different when it comes to the inheritance procedure compared to other countries like the UK. It is also worth noting that Spanish inheritance law also varies from region to region. Legal experts at Sun Lawyers, a Spanish law firm with more than 30 years of experience and several offices across the Costa Blanca, say that makes it vital to get the right advice. Its spokesman says: "You really must have a Spanish will if you have property or any other assets over here. We recently got a letter from a gentleman about the sad story of his wife passing away and she had not made a Spanish will involving her property in this country. That has sadly seen extra stress for him at a time when he does not need it, and it has also cost him thousands of euros to sort everything out". Having a Spanish will ensures that the inheritance procedure is straightforward and less costly. EU citizens living in Spain, as well as several non-EU countries, can now choose whether the law of their home country or their country of residence applies. If a foreign resident dies without leaving a will or making an official declaration on which law they wish to apply, the law of the country where they resided for the last five years will apply. If your estate is dealt with under Spanish inheritance law, forced heirship rules apply - known as the Law of Obligatory Heirs in Spain. This means there are restrictions on how you distribute your estate, as a specific percentage needs to be set aside for certain relatives. If you die without leaving a Spanish will, the laws of intestate succession apply. In Spanish succession law, this means that the estate will be inherited by the following - considering the Law of Obligatory Heirs: • children of the deceased • if there are no children, the parents • if no children or parents, the surviving spouse • if there are none of these, then the next closest blood relatives (up to a fourth-grade limit in the family tree) • if there are no legal beneficiaries from any of these groups, then the Spanish state inherits the estate! Making a Spanish will can also help sort out what levels of inheritance tax are likely to be paid. The rules and Spanish inheritance tax rates vary according to the relationship between the donor and beneficiary, although generally unmarried couples and stepchildren pay more tax than spouses and natural children. New British Ambassador Hugh Elliott arrives in Spain Hugh Elliott, a member of the UK’s Diplomatic Service since 1989, succeeds Simon Manley as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain and non-resident Ambassador to Andorra. The Ambassador takes up this new role having previously been Director of Communications in the Department for Exiting the European Union. On his arrival, Hugh Elliott said: “With a wealth of cultural, commercial, and people-topeople links, the relationship between the UK and Spain is like no other, and I am proud and honoured to represent my Queen and country here in Spain.” For the Ambassador, this strong connection with Spain has been an important part of his life for decades. “I met my wife Toñi while working as an English teacher at the University of Salamanca, Spain was my first diplomatic posting in the nineties and my two children were born in Madrid. I can understand why so many UK nationals have chosen to make Spain their home,” he said. He added that “We are approaching an important milestone as the UK prepares to leave the European Union on 31 October”. His message was one of reassurance to UK nationals currently living in Spain that “We’ve given EU citizens living in the UK the legal certainty of their right to live and remain in the United Kingdom. And I’m very pleased that the Spanish Government has put in place, through the Royal Decree, the same guarantees for British citizens in Spain.” Mr Elliott acknowledged that people have questions and concerns, and undertook that he and his team would be working hard to answer them. He also urged people to sign up to the Living in Guide (gov.uk/living-in-spain) where they will find the latest, accurate information on Brexit. Two key actions that UK nationals should do now is to ensure that they are correctly registered as a resident and registered for healthcare as a resident. Hugh Elliott will shortly present his credentials. A video message from Hugh Elliott to UK nationals can be found at https://www.facebook.com/BritsInSpain/videos/1100205536841750/ Mr Elliott can be followed on Twitter @HughElliottUK.

The Thing About Air Conditioning… On the Costa Blanca for about 3 months of the year it's just too hot and humid and I have noticed over the years, more and more of our neighbours heading back to Blighty for the cooler weather. 2019's UK weather was very extreme and variable and so friends found it even hotter there without air conditioning. The summer temperatures in Spain can reach over 40°C (104°F) and although properties are built to withstand the heat, you may wish to install air-conditioning. Be aware that there can be negative effects if you suffer from asthma or respiratory problems and it’s easy to catch an infection when your body undergoes extreme changes in temperature. Air-conditioning units cost from around 400€ (plus installation) for a 2,000 BTU (frigorías) unit, which is sufficient to cool an average size room. Some air-conditioners are noisy, so check the noise level before buying one. An air-conditioning system with a heat pump provides cooling in summer and economical heating in winter – a system with an outside compressor providing radiant heating and cooling costs around 950€ per room. Many people fit ceiling fans for extra cooling in the summer (costing from around 65€), which are standard fixtures in some new homes. Central heating and air-conditioning dry the air considerably and may cause your family to develop coughs and other ailments. Those who find dry air unpleasant can install humidifiers (humidificador) which add moisture to the air. These range from simple water containers hung from radiators to electrical or battery-operated devices. Humidifiers that don’t generate steam should be disinfected occasionally with a special liquid available from chemists. On the other hand, damp and high humidity are common problems in many holiday homes and it's worthwhile installing de-humidifiers (deshumidificador), especially in the bedrooms, to prevent clothes and linen going mouldy. De-humidifiers are very useful in homes near the coast where humidity levels in winter are very high. Many air conditioning units have a dehumidifying setting too so the machine can work three fold for you. With the added benefit of controlling your unit by WIFI, it means you can manage your home whilst being abroad. You needn't suffer in summer 2020 just get in touch and M3BT will advise and install for a more comfortable summer. Contact us on 618 084 156.

DO IT NOW
Here at Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea we have avoided any comment about Brexit. Until now. But with the UK looking more and more likely to crash out of the EU on October 31 with "No Deal", we are recommending everyone to heed the recent words of Simon Manley in his farewell speech. “Make sure you, your friends and family are properly registered as residents” the outgoing 51 year old British Ambassador said. “And check on your neighbours – make sure they are registered too.” Now, of course, absolutely no-one, including Mr Manley's replacement Hugh Elliott, knows what is actually going to happen. Maybe the UK's exit will be negotiated "With a Deal", maybe there will be another extension, maybe there actually will be 'No exit at all', maybe the exit will indeed be "No Deal", and in this event maybe the Spanish Government will immediately step in and ensure the protection of the 300,000 Brits registered in Spain. Lots of maybes, but absolutely nothing is for sure. Mr Manley finished his speech with the words “I wish you all continued health and happiness in your lives here in Spain.” Well, "happiness" is perhaps rather a difficult emotion for many Brits living here to feel at the moment, given all the uncertainty and worry about how Brexit will eventually conclude. But there are steps you can currently take to gain access to the Spanish Healthcare system. As written by Sun Lawyers in last month's issue of Female Focus: There is no free healthcare in Spain, all costs must be covered one way or another, though emergencies are universally covered. There are 2 main categories here: 1) Limited and temporary healthcare which is achieved through the EHIC card, but this does not include ongoing treatments. 2) Permanent all-inclusive healthcare in Spain, and one essential requirement to qualify is to have Spanish residency, in order to get a SIP card. Forewarned is forearmed, and we do encourage all the readers to listen to Mr Manley's warning, and also to Sun Lawyer's advice. And whilst you are getting your healthcare sorted, why not take another great step towards helping to protect your family in case of any medical emergency by signing up to join the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea. Membership costs just €50 each year per family. We are a private ambulance service provider covering most of the Marina Alta, including inland. Established in 2000, we are a non profitmaking organisation, with all income and donations being reinvested into improving resources even further, and towards purchasing new ambulances from time to time to give even wider coverage. We are not like Spanish State ambulances which do not carry anything like the lifesaving equipment that we do. Our ambulances are akin to Mobile Intensive Care Units and really can mean the difference between life and death. As a member we will come straight to you, either at your home, or wherever you may need us. The annual membership fee entitles members to be taken to a public or a private hospital in case of an emergency for free. Emergencies away from the house are included, and all the ambulances are staffed by two qualified paramedics. To join telephone and speak with Laure Bolufer the AAEdJ Registration Manager on 96 579 6099 (Laure works from 10am to 1pm every weekday). ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA. Beautification of your face in 30 minutes Changing very slight projections and parameters of a face can transform an average aging appearance into a beautiful healthy one in just 8 injection points. Hollows in the temples - As we age our temples hollow out and make us look skeletal. Just filling this in will give a smooth even outline of the forehead area. Tips of the eyebrows - A few drops of hyaluronic acid at the top of each brow will open up the eyes giving a more youthful look.
Cheek eminence - A spot of filler at the tip of each cheekbone will lift the face making it more V shaped. Middle of cheek - The middle of the cheek tends to sag from age 30 making the eyes look tired and producing folds around the nose. A few drops in each cheek will enhance the middle of the face. Borders of nose - A few drops of filler on each side of the nose will lift the top lip and narrow the nostrils giving a finer nose and a prettier lip. Corners of the mouth - Hyaluronic acid in the corners of the mouth will change a sad face into a happy face in a matter of seconds. Chin - Filler in the chin strategically placed can improve one's profile view or can balance a face beautifying a person. Angle of jaw - As we age we lose definition around the jaw, placing thicker filler around the angle of the jaw will remove jowls and make a jaw line refined. For more information on this and other treatments please contact Zen - Smile - Spa, Calle Jorge Luis Borges 8, Javea. Telephone: 96 579 38 10 - 665 506 009 - or visit their website: www.spajavea.es. What are hammer toes? Also called claw toes, it is one of the most common feet complaints and causes the most problems, specifically difficulty in walking, loss of balance, poor stance, developing a gait, and pain in the sole of the foot (due to poor support). However, the most painful are the appearance of calluses that can build up on the back and the tip of the toe. Wearing shoes exacerbates the condition so that in the end, you can’t actually wear shoes! At Clinica Podológica Portalet, we see a lot of patients in agony with this condition and in the end, surgery is the only option to correct the condition and relieve the pain. Before surgery, patients must be assessed by a professional clinician taking into account all the important factors including age, health status, lifestyle etc. Dr Lara Virginia Yañez is a fully qualified and experience Podoligist working out of her modern clinic in Calpe where she specialises in minimum incision surgery. Incisions are usually only 2-4mm and allow access to the soft tissues and bone, causing minimum harm to adjacent tissue. There are several key advantages and benefits of this approach: · No screws or staples · Local anaesthesia · No bleeding so no need to manage bleeding · Immediate recovery · You can start walking straight away without crutches through the use of a post-surgical shoe · Back to normal in just 48 hours · Less risk of infection plus the tiniest of scars Hammer Toes aren’t the only conditions treated at the clinic. We can also successfully treat a range of conditions including: · Treating corns, hardnesses and bunions · Ingrown toenails · Elimination of warts and other fungal growths · Treatment of ‘diabetic foot’ · Custom orthopaedic prosthetics etc · Computer controlled study of the way you walk with corrective treatment as required. We’re on our feet all through the day – and night! We take our feet for granted until we have a problem. We’re proud of the work we do at Clinic Podológica Portalet and of the thousands of patients we’ve helped lead a normal life with the minimum fuss and maximum ease of walking. We offer a no-obligation consultation, just call 96 583 5245 to make an appointment. Female Focus September 2019

Walk Your Way Well by Niamh O'Sheehan If you are Spain side you are probably breathing a massive sigh of relief as the baking temperatures return to some semblance of normality. If you are living in chillier climes, you are no doubt wondering where on Earth the summer went to? It’s autumn already! Either way, here’s hoping you all had a really lovely summer. In the unfortunate event that it didn’t go as planned and you are feeling frustrated then I’d like to offer a fantastic solution. In fact, even if you had the best summer ever, I’d still suggest it's time to plan an autumn or winter city break. And why not? There are so many beautiful cities to explore on our European doorstep that we are spoilt for choice. Have you eaten in Istanbul? Have you had the craic in Kraków? Romanced in Rome? I think the time has come. Step one: Visit skyscanner.com where you can easily search for flights from your nearest local airport to ANYWHERE. Imagine that. Select a month and see where the best value flights can take you. Step two: Get your walking shoes out of the cupboard and dust them off. Step three: Get going! I love to travel. The reality is, no matter how many tourist books we devour, or TV holiday shows we binge watch, we are usually left wanting. We can only truly learn about another place and culture by physically transporting ourselves there to expose all our senses to the unfamiliar sights and sounds. And what better way to fully immerse yourself in a city than to tackle it on foot. Tour buses can cover significant ground and introduce you briefly to the main tourist attractions. Unfortunately, it can all end up a bit of a blur as it’s just too fast and noisy to soak it all in. You might as well just YouTube “main tourist attractions in Prague” and avoid the traffic congestion and the silly price tag. Now, don’t get me wrong, if you are physically challenged or extremely unfit then this is a fantastic solution and sometimes the only possible way
to cover the main landmarks. You can hop-on-hop-off and “do Paris” in a single morning. Bicycles are an easy way to cover kilometres while exploring a bike friendly city. You get to see things more intimately and at a slower pace. However, if you’re anything like me, I’m absolutely guaranteed to cause an injury to myself or some unfortunate pedestrian in my path! And so we fall back on my old reliable favourite. My feet! To really get down and dirty you’ve got to pound the pavements and cover the cobbles of the capitals. At a walking pace you’ll catch snippets of local gossip shared between the Madrileño grannies. You can giggle at the heated discussions between bickering Veneziani waiters as you pass their restaurant terraces. You’ll inhale the waft of wonderful waffles in Brussels. You’ll hear waves of celtic music drifting from chattering Galway bars. Everything is enticing and within close proximity as you quite literally rub shoulders with the locals. Choose from a group guided walking tour, a self guided walking tour or just lose yourself alone in the backstreets of your chosen destination. I would strongly recommend you steer clear of the gimmicky Segway’s and e-scooters and give yourself the physical workout your body deserves to build up an appetite. You will inevitably and deservedly end up sampling the local cuisine you’ve been ogling through restaurant windows all day. This article was written as I ambled aimlessly through the streets of Dublin on a drizzly Tuesday morning. SIX hours to pencil down a few thoughts. The distractions were beautiful. As I write this final paragraph I’m resting my tired feet as I sit under a tree in the famed gardens of Trinity College. And I feel fulfilled. Lace up and come join me. TechnoTip: www.freewalkingtours.com is an incredible online resource where you will find FREE group walking tours. You donate what you can afford after a two or three hour informative introduction, on foot, to 100s of worldwide cities. Walking Word: add these to your spanish vocabulary list and you’ll really go places in life A LA DERECHA and A LA IZQUIERDA. Who can tell me which is which?

Aged 50, 60 or 70? You still need to "Prepare for School"... In September the kids go back to school after the long summer break. They ready their uniforms, books, satchels (and ipads?) and get organised for a new school year. We adults should adopt the same mentality, in order to prepare ourselves for what lies around the corner... Cleansing the excesses of the summer: For many of us our summer is marked by some amount of excess. Parties, vacations, concerts and family gatherings very often include some indulgence. Of course, moderation is key to a healthy life, so there’s no harm in a little bit of extra enjoyment for three months out of the year! But perhaps now is the time to returning to eating healthily, following the Mediterranean diet, reducing our levels of alcohol etc. Take a look at your body: It is pretty hard to avoid the sun in Spain, especially in the summer, and even if you haven't been laid out sunbathing, it is important to examine your skin regularly, looking for any new skin moles as well as changes in the moles you already have. Consult your doctor or a dermatologist about any suspicious, raised or itchy spot or mole, especially if it has a rough, scaly or ulcerated surface, or begins to bleed or weep. This could be an early sign of malignant melanoma. The good news is that most skin cancers are highly treatable when detected early. Refuelling the tank: Vitamins and minerals are nutrients your body needs in small amounts to work properly and stay healthy. Most people should get all the nutrients they need by having a varied and balanced diet, although some few people may need to take extra supplements. Vitamins help your body grow and work the way it should. There are 13 vitamins - vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, B6, B12, and folate). Vitamins have different jobs—helping you resist infections, keeping your nerves healthy, and helping your body get energy from food or your blood to clot properly. By following good Dietary Guidelines you will get enough of most of these vitamins from food. (You can google the UK Government's "Eatwell Guide" which gives recommendations and advice on eating healthily and achieving a balanced diet.)
Female Focus September 2019
Minerals also help your body function. Some minerals, like iodine and fluoride, are only needed in very small quantities. Others, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are needed in larger amounts. As with vitamins, if you eat a varied diet, you will probably get enough of most minerals. Winter is Coming: Part of the fun of the cooler months is being able to snuggle up and concentrate on a good book, or watch your favourite TV character using their power to seize the throne of Westeros. But sometimes we ourselves, need to ensure that our own first line of defence is properly in place. The risk of serious illness from flu and consequent hospitalisation is higher among those aged 65 years and older as they are more likely to have an underlying health problem. Also, as people get older, their immune systems tend to be less effective compared to when they were younger, and they are at greater risk of developing more serious illness if they succumb to a bout of the flu, which in turn could lead to pneumonia and other serious complications. Having the flu vaccination reduces the risk of developing the illness significantly. So if you fall into the category of having any immunological deficiency, being vulnerable to colds and flu, or are of an age that you want to avoid the flu and the potentially other more serious complications that it can bring with it, then go and ask your GP about the flu vaccine.

LOVE AT FIRST COAT
The GelBottle has arrived at Mimis Kru! Kina and Bee, our lovely beauticians at Mimis Kru are delighted to now be working with The GelBottle Inc™. This innovative product was born with high quality and innovation in mind, and offers an incredible array of unique colours to satisfy everyone’s taste. The system includes cutting edge products like Builder In A Bottle™ and GelPot, two revolutionary builder gel systems for both natural nails and extensions. With the Gel Bottle company’s different approach they have rapidly grown into an international brand recognised worldwide and are quickly making their way to the forefront of the industry by learning to set trends, not to follow them. The GelBottle Inc™ gel polishes are rich, highly pigmented, chip-resistant and offer extreme long lasting shine. The good news doesn’t end there because they are also VEGAN and CRUELTY FREE. The specialist builder gels are ideal for natural nail strengthening overlays, and/or creating extensions using tips. They can also be used as base coats, as they are an all-in-one primer and base. Kina and Bee have found the Builder In A Bottle™ opaque nude in this range very popular especially as a finished set without an additional colour. The main reason being that as the nail grows there is no obvious show of growth and there is no chipping or lifting, which helps grow natural nails. There is a large selection of colours and we’re are building our collection as we go so let us know your favourites and we can add them to our range. Naturals and neons are trending this year as well as the pastels and we all love a bit of glitter! Of particular note is NCODE biomagnetism, a treatment with magnets that can help improve or resolve acute and chronic pathologies, such as neuromuscular, organic and emotional diseases (anxiety, anger, depression etc) by acting on the pH of the brain. It is a treatment that regulates pH, diagnoses the etiology (cause) of the problem and does preventive work. There are a wide variety of payment options, per month, per class or class passes, finding a solution for each budget and need. About iLanga iLanga started 7 years ago in Mauritius, where Patricia Piper, the owner of the Centre, started organising Yoga Retreats and Life Coaching holidays, to help people improve their lives. A few years later, she opened the first iLanga Yoga Studio in Durban, South Africa. iLanga means the ‘Sun’ in Zulu, a perfect word for the main purpose of the Centre, which is to bring light into people’s lives, whether it is physically, mentally or spiritually. Patricia saw the need for a centre like this on the Costa Blanca, and decided to open in Calpe. She assembled all her professional alternative health colleagues together in order to offer the widest variety to suit everyone’s needs. Between all of them they can attend you in English, Spanish, Rumanian, French, Dutch, German. You can find iLanga at Edificio Gran Sol, Carrer Llevant, Playa de la Fossa, Calpe. For several years the Aborigen View team had been doing solidarity
trips to África, all they wanted was to share resources and bring visual health to those who need it most as well as clothing and medicines. It was at their first trip to the Sahara where they realised how necessary these glasses are for all those who have no access to visual health care and so they created Aborigen View to be able to reach more people in need. Aborigen View is more than just a nonprofit association, it is an NGO that acts directly on the area of the problem and has three clear goals bringing health care, humanitarian aid and volunteers to the most vulnerable places in the world.
- Visual health care program: The team travels to the most remote areas with professional equipment and professionals, they take eye tests and give glasses to all those who need an optical compensation to see again. Furthermore, they also work hard to raise awareness of the youngest population about the importance of protection and prevention to avoid future common pathologies. - Survival points: If people have what they need to subsist they won’t feel the need to leave their land and will stay to make it rich. Aborigen View studies the land to provide what is mostly needed to the communities. At the moment they are working in Gambia, Faraba Sutu, where they provide health care, education, building jobs and support to small entrepreneurs. - Volunteering: The volunteering program is special, different and efficient because it is carried out at their own survival points where studies are done and the operations are planned in an integrated way. They offer the volunteers a destiny where the humanitarian aid is really necessary achieving two essential things, improving the volunteers experience and making the best use of the labour that they perform. If you want to learn more about this NGO and join their team you can visit their website www.aborigenview.org for more information and discover how you can help, making a donation, sponsoring or being part of the volunteering program. Additionally, you can bring your used glasses or sunglasses to Interoptics, C/Princeps d’Espanya 17, Alfaz del Pi and follow their efforts on Facebook and Instagram @aborigenview and give your support at the next local events. Interview with Gerrit Jan Smitskamp, the new Dutch President of the Altea Golf Club
Question: You have been President of Altea Golf Club for 4 months now. What are the biggest challenges for the club? Answer: Like most Golf Clubs worldwide, our membership is falling by 10% per year. This means that we receive less income from memberships. Fortunately we see a steady growth in green fee players so that the income remains the same. Nevertheless, I believe that we can attract at least 100 new members over the next four years, once we have opened our new restaurant and our new fitness centre. This will allow us to appeal to a wider audience and offer more activities to people in our area. Question: What are your plans for the future? Answer: The vision of our 5-year plan is to become one of the best 9 golf clubs in Spain and I firmly believe that we will achieve this status in the coming years. We already have a spectacularly beautiful golf course, so when we open our new restaurant in September we are already well on our way to achieving our goal. With our new Gym / Fitness centre we are also turning the club into a country club, where everyone from the neighbourhood is welcome to participate in social or sports activities. Question: What kind of restaurant will there be? Answer: A few years ago we had a restaurant that was known as a beautiful place for lunches, dinners and events such as weddings. We will restore this again. The updated modern design creates a cosy atmosphere and will offer an attractive international menu and regular special lunches or events for members and also non-
members. The enlarged terrace offers a beautiful view of the golf course. I think there are few places in the area where you have such a beautiful view as on our new terrace. The restaurant is planned to be open to everyone at the beginning of October. Question: You mentioned a new gym and fitness centre? Answer: Yes, in September we intend opening a gym with two personal trainers, as well as two studios for Pilates, Yoga and other fitness classes that will be open to everyone. In addition, there will also be a chiropractor, a physiotherapist and a masseur. Question: Can people still become members? Answer: Of course. Experienced players can become members and immediately participate in tournaments and competitions, or join one of the Club's many golf societies. For the new or less experienced golfers, two experienced golf professionals are available to get you ready to play on the course after a few golf lessons. Question: What will success mean to you at the end of the 4 years that you will be President? Answer: I want everyone who is a member of our beautiful club to be proud to invite friends to play golf or eat in our new restaurant. I also hope that we can offer the many local residents a social centre where there is something for everyone, from Golf, Fitness, Pilates,Yoga or Bridge to just enjoying a special evening in our new restaurant. See below for more information on this hidden gem.

A CANINE CONVENTION by Malcolm Smith Picture this! It is mid afternoon on a balmy sunny day. The small but alluring sub tropical park at the heights of Altea’s San Chochim is bathed in a quiet hush only slightly broken by squawking terns. Beneath the tall stately swaying palms are other bright colourful trees and shrubs. A flapping family of sparrows is enjoying a dust bath in one of the shady spots between the greenery flanked pathways. Squirrels scamper their way up to peaks of umbrella capped palms and other leafy lofty hideaways. Wood pigeons are cooing themselves to sleep whilst seagulls are dipping and diving midst whispy drifting, scudding clouds.
A coven of well fed cats; a smooth black tom, a ginger and white skulking marmalade and a slim grey slinky Siamese have crept craftily under the assortment of ‘coches’ to bask and snooze in the nearby parking lot where their carousing and protecting of ‘auto’ charges is prominently their chosen kingdom. Within minutes the picture changes. As I slouch and sip my preferred linctus – Voll Damm beer – this sylvan park over which my terrace commands an entrancing vista springs to life with barks and yelps, as it transforms into a ‘Canine Capers’ paradise with puppy love and tail-wagging doggie pleasure. Then the bubble bursts and memories of the past creep in. When I came to Spain all those years ago domesticated animals were few and far between and for much of the time were considered to be pests…..not pets. There was the occasional odd surviving mangy dog and a few scrawny cats around but not for long. These were certainly not domestic pets. Rodent and reptilian creatures, varying from mice, sea rats, iguanas, geckos and even large grass snakes represented animal supremacy here on the Costa Blanca. What a volte-face emerges! As I relax and ruminate, people and dogs of all shapes and sizes begin to appear via a variety of routes to this verdant vista, instantly creating a much more welcoming and tranquil scenario. A teenager clad in an extension of a leotard comes into view holding a loosely leashed couple of French Poodles, immediately followed by an elegant lady being persuaded to join the fun by a pair of greyhounds. As the panorama widens an assortment of Skye terriers, a ‘Yorkie’ a Papillon and a Chiahua, some Chinese mixtures (I dare not say mongrels), Chin & Akita, a German Shepherd, a Boxer, a Whippet and a Great Dane make their appearance with a miniature, long eared ‘butterfly dog’ pup clinging like a wayward scarf around its blonde owner's neck. Now the tranquil path had suddenly become San Chochim’s own rather casual version of Crufts. At a drop of a leash, canines romp and cavort chasing anything that moves, whilst yapping and yelping to announce their presence. This epic four-legged canine carnival begins each day at around early afternoon and continues for a couple of hours, with the now free ranging dogs exhibiting their varied active talents. Not so entertaining are their proud protective owners. As disinterested as the ‘hoi-polloi’ at a political rant, these folk either perch on the conveniently placed concrete ‘sofas’ or pose like statues only displaying interest when overlooking their own pooches antics as the pantomime progresses. From my balcony I have no idea what this canine owners ‘club’ find to discuss but I must admit their enthusiasm is seriously PC-HIGHWAY are trying to "FILL UP" our shop in support infectious. of APASA who due to lack of funds are struggling to feed many However I reckon comparing dog foods, dog hygiene, plastic abandoned dogs. pooper-scoopers and ‘rubber’ gnawing bones figure, but I presume If you would like to help please buy a yellow 4, 18 or 20 kilo bag the ‘canine capers’ aficionados must surely have more to discuss of dry dog food (available from Mercadona) and deliver it to us than the convoluted antics of their animals. Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain to focus on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Light bulb moment needed over e-scooter plague SILENT and, sadly, sometimes deadly; e-scooters suddenly seem to be everywhere and are causing a bit of a headache for the authorities because of a legal vacuum. The numbers of these lean green machines on the streets are soaring - riders say they are fun to use, an economical form of transport and a clean air commute. However, someone somewhere needs to act fast and make some rules of the road - and enforce them - before more people are hurt as e-scooters swarm around the streets ...a bit of protection for pedestrians (remember them?) and riders alike. At the moment, users are zipping all over the place; some go at quite a lick. They like pavements (no cars); cycle lanes (no cars); but are happy to barrel along the tarmac, often without lights which means no braking warning or indicating to help other road users - riders also love pedestrian crossings and heading up one way streets against the flow of traffic. Why? Well, because they can. The UK went a tad heavy-handed by banning e-scooters on the streets, at the moment they can only be used on private property and the police are already ready with swinging fines. The legislation will probably be looked at again but at the moment the powers that be are too busy with Brexit. Town halls on the Costa Blanca are reviewing the situation. Benidorm has already introduced bylaws. E-scooters and devices like Segways are allowed on cycle lanes; riders must wear helmets and have public liability insurance. It’s time for some co-ordinated country wide measures. Spain’s DGT traffic authority believes the first death of a pedestrian was in August last year when a 90-year-old woman out for a stroll with a walker - struck from behind; she hit her head and later died of internal bleeding in hospital. The accident was in a pedestrian-only area in a Catalonia town. The facts are not in dispute: the e-scooter was travelling at under 10 kilometres per hour but the machine was carrying two people and the teenage driver was using his mobile at the time. An investigating judge has decided a fine will be appropriate when the matter comes to trial. A potential charge of involuntary manslaughter has been replaced with one of ‘minor recklessness’ and to be fair the 19-year-old rider has met relatives of the victim to apologise and ask their forgiveness. The need for proper regulation is immediately clear. If a similar accident was caused by a driver behind the wheel of a car using an electronic device ...well, a book would be flying across a Spanish courtroom. Female Focus September 2019

FEMALE bathers at Barcelona’s public swimming pools are now free to go topless in the name of gender equality. City hall has ordered any regulations banning topless bathing be binned at 14 sports centres across Spain’s second city. The move comes after Barcelona’s office against discrimination delivered a report to the local authority. It says: “Imposing rules of dress specifically for women means restricting their freedom of choice and is gender discrimination.” Sports centre workers said topless bathing was already popular at outdoor pools and solariums; they described the order as a “reinforcement” of policy and freedom. One centre already embraces topless bathing - it also has a dedicated timeslot for nudist bathing; another reported it was not aware of the new policy but said there was a ban at its indoor pools used for competitive sport. Migrant ship gets star billing H O L LY W O O D superstar Richard Gere has clashed with a top politician over the fate of 160 rescued migrants on board the Spanish charity ship Open Arms - which has been blocked from entering Italian waters. The actor, who visited the ship and its human cargo plucked from the Med, believes the Italian government needed to stop “demonising” people. And Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini responded by suggesting the “generous” multi-millionaire might want to fly the migrants to the US of A. Officer and a Gentleman star Gere called on the Italians to allow the ship to dock - he made comparisons between Mr Salvini who is also interior minister and has been extremely vocal over stopping migrant ships from entering Italy - to one Donald Trump, who has faced widespread criticism over his immigration policies. Speaking from an Italian island, the actor said: “We have problems with refugees coming from Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico...it’s very similar to what you are going through here. “This has to stop on this planet now. And it will stop if we say ‘stop’.” Salvini scratched back: “Given this generous millionaire is voicing concern for the fate of the Open Arms migrants, we thank him. He can take all the people aboard back to Hollywood on his private plane and support them in his villas. Thank you Richard!” Give the kids more screen time A PROUD mum has been forced to rethink how much time she allows her teenage son to play a cult online gaming hit after he shared a $2.25 million prize with his partner in the Fortnite World Cup. “Thank you Miss Val”
Students of The Valerie Jean School of Dance, came together for an evening of celebration at their new home ‘Star Studios’, recently. It was a bittersweet evening as the most important part of the evening was to wish Miss Val, principle and founder of The Valerie Jean School of Dance, a very happy retirement! With her dance school teaching spanning 4 decades, in recent years, Miss Val has even been teaching the daughters of her original dance students. However sadly all good things must come to an end and Miss Val decided it was time to hang up her ballet shoes and to pass the school onto her fellow associate and teacher, Lucy Glister. Miss Val thanked parents and students for the fabulous gift presented to her, made possible by generous contributions from the parents. A unique sculpture of a beautiful ballerina by local artist Toni Mari was secretly commissioned. Toni is now based at the Art al Camp Garden Centre on the Garden Centre Road leading out of Jávea - his work can been seen all around Jávea, Denia and Moraira. A wonderful evening was had by all, and glasses were raised to wish Miss Val a welldeserved, happy retirement and to the continued success of ‘Star Studios’ - the new purpose built studios, which are now the official Centre for The Valerie Jean School of Dance and The Stage School and are situated on the Jávea Arenal.

Help our Planet With everything that is happening with the world's environment and the fact that we are all starting to think a little bit more carefully about what choices we make, with Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth plastics and products in general and furthermore recycling, it is sometimes easy to overlook small changes we can all make. Reducing our carbon output is becoming an ever more important ambition for all countries and people at a personal level. Being a garden designer and landscaper allows me to fill our gardens with trees, shrubs, and plants to create homes for wildlife and start to give life to CO2 sucking plants that we all need. I heard something on the UK news not that long back about CO2 emissions and how everyone can make a difference and I think that every person, family, local government and country should make a pledge. Every house with a garden must plant at least two trees, even if they are small trees, preferably indigenous to the region they are from, but nevertheless, plant two trees. Could you imagine the positive environmental impact of such an act? These trees could be bought for 20â‚Ź, possibly less for the two. If every local authority planted more public spaces with trees, it makes the area look more appealing and cools the streets during the hot summer while reducing the carbon footprint of the town. It does not seem such a big ask to me for everyone to do this. The trees will grow and develop and will change the landscape and environment around us, instead of stripping it out, put it back in. I feel quite privileged knowing that I have had a positive input to the local environment moving into the future, where the gardens we have built will continue, long after I have gone. It's a nice legacy to have. As a garden designer and landscaper unfortunately, I do understand that not all trees are in the correct position and sometimes may have to be removed, but if other trees, or equivalent trees are planted, that is what matters the most. The trees and plants in our gardens add so much to a garden and local environment. Do not live in a baron garden, they are soulless and not nice, give back to the planet, the future, and your own wellbeing. If you need some help with choosing and planting your trees, shrubs and plants then do not hesitate in contacting Charlesworth Gardens and we will help you put a bit more back into the future.

Dear Doctor. I met this gorgeous Swede on the internet (www.IKEA.com). The style, the swagger, the sophistication. I want it and I want it now. But how can I connect with this vision of beauty. How do I make contact and make that connection. I don't speak the language and the whole process is so complicated. I really don't know how to make the first move. It's all too intimidating. Chair maker marks 150 years Not many businesses make it to be 150 years old. Some of Britain’s Oldest Brands are the likes of Cadbury, Rolls Royce, Typhoo Tea, Harrods, Thomas Cook and the Financial Times. To become household names like these, the businesses and their products have to be exceptionally good. Sitting amongst them (pun intended) is the chair business started in 1869 by Frederick Parker that was to become Parker Knoll. Over the years Frederick Parker built a solid reputation for the development of beautifully handcrafted furniture, launching styles and designs that redefined seating in form and function over the course of the 19th century. From its humble beginnings in a simple workshop in London, the Parker Knoll story is a thoroughly British tale, of exquisite craft and design, encompassing manufacturing periods in London, High Wycombe and the East Midlands. Their chairs furnished the homes of Victorian gentry, adorned the top hotels, were fitted into luxury ocean liners and when Edward VIII first addressed the nation he was sitting in a Parker Knoll chair. In 1929 the firm teamed up with Willi Knoll, who was a German inventor of a new form of sprung furniture, and to this day designers at the company continue to use its large archive as inspiration for their beautiful, hard-wearing sofas and chairs. In celebration of its 150th anniversary, Parker Knoll is delighted to announce the launch of exclusive furniture range, Collection 150. Inspired by the 1920s and 1930s, two defining decades for Parker Knoll, the new collection combines Art Deco influences with a contemporary aesthetic, resulting in finely designed sofas and chairs – all designed to offer refined style and comfort. Here in Spain we are lucky to have exclusive access to Parker Knoll through the family firm of Harris Furnishings. Located in Pedreguer, close to Jávea, Harris Furnishings has a very large, bright, welcoming show room, where you can take your time, browse without being hounded, and when you are ready Jayne and David Harris are able to help you carefully select the right chair or sofa style, and fabric choices, to add sophistication and comfort to your home. Find Harris Furnishings at Calle de la Marroquineria No 1, Pedreguer, 03750 (where the Sunday market is). Open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm. Saturday 10am to 1pm. Sunday closed. The Rugby World Cup starts 20 September The 2019 Rugby World Cup will be the ninth Rugby World Cup, and is to be held in Japan from 20 September to 2 November. This will be the first time the tournament is to be held in Asia, and outside the traditional heartland of rugby union. The opening stage of the competition kicks off on Friday, 20 September, as 20 nations from all across the globe compete for the William Webb Ellis Trophy by battling their way out of four Pools - A, B, C and D. Each Pool contains five teams and only two teams can advance into the knockout rounds. Eddie Jones' England side features in Pool C which is particularly tricky having been drawn with Argentina, France, USA and Tonga. It means one of rugby's 'big fish' will suffer the ignominy of going home early. Scotland are in Pool A with Ireland, Japan, Russia and Samoa. Wales, meanwhile, are in Pool D and will be taking on Australia, Georgia, Fiji and Uruguay. At Black Flame Bar, Grill & Carvery we will be offering really great offers on drinks during all of the Home Nation matches, and we serve food all day. We have widescreen TVs, a great family atmosphere, and plenty of easy parking. Oh Yes, and beer! You can check at www.rugbyworldcup.com/matches for all match dates and the complete tournament schedule, but here are the kickoff times for the first games for each of the four Home Nation sides: Ireland vs Scotland. Sunday, 22 September. 09:45 Spanish time. England vs Tonga. Sunday, 22 September. 12:15 Spanish time. Wales vs Georgia. Monday, 23 September. 12:15 Spanish time. Black Flame Bar, Grill & Carvery (Formerly Monroe's). Avda Garrofer, Monte Pedreguer, Pedreguer. For more details please see www.blackflame.es or call 96 576 1731.

A Traditional Country Pub – Right Here in Spain By Fred Silver
One of the things I miss about the UK, is the traditional country pub. The old building with character, good beer, great pub grub, community feel, darts, maybe a TV with sports, occasional live music, family days and just a really nice place to spend an evening. The Bull and Bear is just that place. Only it’s right here in the heart of our community in Benitachell. The Bull and Bear is actually a pub, restaurant and small hotel in a beautiful 17th century building. The pub is downstairs serving a range of beers and ciders, and of course snacks and pub food ranging from sandwiches to ploughman’s to steaks, pies and curries. Upstairs is the restaurant where along with the a la carte menu, are the specials. Wednesday is steak night. Choose your cut from rib-eye to rump, and the chef will cook it to your liking. Friday is Fish’n’chips night which actually takes place more in the bar. Saturdays is barbecue – a great evening out for all the family and Sunday your traditional roast carvery from 1pm4pm. There really is something for everyone and if you both want to have a drink, simply book a room in the hotel from 45€ per night. The Bull and Bear was recently taken over by Lewis Maclaver who recognised the potential that fresh ideas coupled with getting the basics right can bring. On the back of that, Thursdays has become theme night with alternatives such as Asian food nights. I often stop by for a quick lunchtime bite and something to quench my thirst. It’s great to know that the Bull and Bear is open 7 days a week from noon until 11pm (or often later!). The food is spot on and the staff extremely friendly. If you haven’t been, I can heartily recommend a visit. Head towards the Jávea side of Benitachell and take the turning opposite masymas. Dining reservations are recommended on 96 649 4143.
